Abstract
The dimer of the tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) radical anions represents the simplest and the best studied case of two-electron multicenter covalent bonding (2e/mc or pancake bonding). The model compound, N-methylpyridinium salt of TCNE•-, is diamagnetic, meaning that the electrons in two contiguous radicals are paired and occupy a HOMO orbital which spans two TCNE•- radicals. Charge density in this system is studied as a benchmark for comparison of charge densities in other pancake-bonded radical systems. Two electrons from two contiguous radicals indeed form a bonding electron pair, which is distributed between two central ethylene groups in the dimer, i.e., between four carbon atoms. The topology of electron density reveals two bond critical points between the central ethylene groups in the dimer, with maximum electron density of 0.185 e Å-3; the corresponding theoretical value is 0.118 e Å-3.

Abstract
We report on the synthesis of the new bis(alkenylruthenium) complex DBTTF-(ViRu)2 with a longitudinally extended, π-conjugated dibenzotetrathiafulvalene (DBTTF) bridge, characterized by multinuclear NMR, IR, and UV/vis spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Cyclic and square-wave voltammetry revealed that DBTTF-(ViRu)2 undergoes four consecutive oxidations. IR, UV/vis/near-IR, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy indicate that the first oxidation involves the redox-noninnocent DBTTF bridge, while the second oxidation is biased toward one of the peripheral styrylruthenium entities, thereby generating an electronically coupled mixed-valent state ({Ru}-CH═CH)•+-DBTTF•+-(CH═CH-{Ru}) [{Ru} = Ru(CO)Cl(PiPr3)2]. The latter is apparently in resonance with the ({Ru}-CH═CH)•+-DBTTF-(CH═CH-{Ru})•+ and ({Ru}-CH═CH)-DBTTF2+-(CH═CH-{Ru}) forms, which are calculated to lie within 19 kJ/mol. Higher oxidized forms proved too unstable for further characterization. The reaction of DBTTF-(ViRu)2 with the strong organic acceptors 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone, tetracyano-p-benzoquinodimethane (TCNQ), and F4TCNQ resulted in formation of the DBTTF-(ViRu)2•+ radical cation, as shown by various spectroscopic techniques. Solid samples of these compounds were found to be highly amorphous and electrically insulating.

Abstract
To investigate potential applications of the 3,3'-dihydroxy-2,2'-biindan-1,1'-dione (BIT) structure as an organic semiconductor with intramolecular hydrogen bonds, a new synthetic route under mild conditions is developed based on the addition reaction of 1,3-dione to ninhydrin and the subsequent hydrogenation of the hydroxyl group. This route affords several new BIT derivatives, including asymmetrically substituted structures that are difficult to access by conventional high-temperature synthesis. The BIT derivatives exhibit rapid tautomerization by intramolecular double proton transfer in solution. The tautomerizations are also observed in the solid state by variable temperature measurements of X-ray diffractometry and magic angle spinning 13C solid-state NMR. Possible interplay between the double proton transfer and the charge transport is suggested by quantum chemical calculations. The monoalkylated BIT derivative with a lamellar packing structure suitable for lateral charge transport in films shows a hole mobility of up to 0.012 cm2 V-1 s-1 with a weak temperature dependence in an organic field effect transistor.

Abstract
A bis(aza-18-crown-6)-containing 2,5-di(benzylidene)cyclopentanone and a bis(ammoniopropyl) derivative of 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene in MeCN were found to form a supramolecular charge-transfer complex, which can act as an "off-on" fluorescent sensor for the Ca2+ and 1,12-dodecanediammonium ions. The molecular structure of this complex in solution was studied by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract
The use of purely organic materials is a promising approach for the miniaturization of devices due to their interesting optical, electronic and magnetic properties. Bisdithiazolyl-based bisDTA compounds have emerged as promising candidates for radical-based single component conductors exhibiting simultaneously magnetic properties. Our computational work focuses on the intriguing magnetism of 4 isostructural pyridine-bridged bisDTA-multifunctional materials triggered by their magnetic and conducting properties being strongly dependent on the different S/Se ratios in the neutral radical skeleton: specifically, bisdithiazolyl (S,S) displays no magnetic order at low temperatures, thiaselenazolyl (Se,S) exhibits spin-canted antiferromagnetism (AFM), and both (S,Se) and bisdiselenazolyl (Se,Se) behave as bulk ferromagnets (FM). Our results reveal that (1) the magnetic response depends on the existence of an intricate network of both AFM and FM spin exchange JAB couplings between neighbouring radicals; and (2) the structural arrangement of π-stacked pairs of radicals sits on a point in the configurational space that is very close to a crossover region where JAB switches from AFM to FM. Indeed, for bulk FM, the experimental response is only accounted for when considering an ab initio optimised crystal structure able to portray adequately the electronic structure of bisDTAs in the region close to the temperature at which magnetic ordering emerges. Magneto-structural correlation maps show the large sensitivity of JAB to very small structural changes with temperature along the π-stacks that lead to drastic changes in the magnetic properties. Clearly, the understanding of magnetism in the title bisDTA compounds is decisive to rationally tailor the properties of multifunctional materials by subtle structural modifications of their crystal packing.

Abstract
Multicentre two-electron (mc/2e or 'pancake bonding') bonding between 7,7,8,8-tetra-cyano-quinodi-methane (TCNQ) radical anions was studied on its 14 novel salts with planar organic cations. The formal charges of the TCNQδ- moieties are -1/2 and -2/3, and they form mc/2e bonded dimers, trimers and tetramers which are further stacked into extended arrays. Multicentre bonding within these oligomers is characterized by short interplanar separations of 2.9-3.2 Å; distances between the oligomers are larger, typically >3.3 Å. The stacks are laterally connected by C-H⋯N hydrogen bonding, forming 2D arrays. The nature of mc/2e bonding is characterized by structural, magnetic and electrical data. The compounds are found to be semiconductors, and high conductivity [10-2 (Ω cm)-1] correlates with short interplanar distances between pancake-bonded oligomers.

Abstract
New 4,8,12-trioxotriangulene (TOT) neutral radical derivatives having three methoxy and hydroxy groups at the α-positions were synthesized, and the substituent effects on the electronic spin and redox properties were elucidated in the theoretical and experimental methods. Due to the small SOMO coefficients at the α-positions of TOT, the methoxy groups in the TOT neutral radical had negligible effects on the electronic spin structure and redox ability. On the other hand, methoxy groups greatly increased the LUMO energy having large coefficients at α-positions and, thus, caused a remarkable negative-potential shift of the redox wave of anion species involving the dianion and trianion species. Converting the methoxy groups to hydroxy groups caused a dramatic change in the electronic structure of TOT, where the intramolecular hydrogen bonds between hydroxy groups and oxo groups strongly attracted a minus charge on the TOT skeleton. The HOMO energy of the monoanion species was significantly reduced, causing a blue shift of the HOMO-LUMO transition and an anodic shift of the redox potential. In addition, due to the steric repulsion smaller than that of the methoxy group, the hydroxy derivative showed a more planar molecular structure and a strong π-stacking ability.

Abstract
In this study, crystals of the hybrid layered structure, combined with Fe(III) Spin-Crossover (SCO) complexes with metal-dithiolate anionic radicals, and the precursors with nitrate and iodine counterions, are obtained and characterized. [Fe(III)(3-OMe-Sal2trien)][Ni(dmit)2] (1), [Fe(III)(3-OMe-Sal2trien)]NO3·H2O (2), [Fe(III)(3-OMe-Sal2trien)]I (3) (3-OMe-Sal2trien = hexadentate N4O2 Schiff base is the product of the condensation of triethylenetetramine with 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde; H2dmit = 2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiol). Bulk SCO transition was not achieved in the range 2.0–350 K for all three compounds. Alternatively, the hybrid system (1) exhibited irreversible segregation into the spatial fractions of Low-Spin (LS) and High-Spin (HS) phases of the ferric moiety, induced by thermal cycling. Fractioning was studied using both SQUID and EPR methods. Magnetic properties of the LS and HS phases were analyzed in the framework of cooperative interactions with anionic sublattice: Anion radical layers Ni(dmit)2 (1), and H-bonded chains with NO3 and I (2,3). LS phase of (1) exhibited unusual quasi-two-dimensional conductivity related to the Arrhenius mechanism in the anion radical layers, ρ||c = 2 × 105 Ohm·cm and ρ⊥c = 7 × 102 Ohm·cm at 293 K. Ground spin state of the insulating HS phase was distinctive by ferromagnetically coupled spin pairs of HS Fe3+, S = 5/2, and metal-dithiolate radicals, S = 1/2.

Abstract
The first systematic study of π interactions between non-aromatic rings, based on the authors' own results from an experimental X-ray charge-density analysis assisted by quantum chemical calculations, is presented. The landmark (non-aromatic) examples include quinoid rings, planar radicals and metal-chelate rings. The results can be summarized as: (i) non-aromatic planar polyenic rings can be stacked, (ii) interactions are more pronounced between systems or rings with little or no π-electron delocalization (e.g. quinones) than those involving delocalized systems (e.g. aromatics), and (iii) the main component of the interaction is electrostatic/multipolar between closed-shell rings, whereas (iv) interactions between radicals involve a significant covalent contribution (multicentric bonding). Thus, stacking covers a wide range of interactions and energies, ranging from weak dispersion to unlocalized two-electron multicentric covalent bonding ('pancake bonding'), allowing a face-to-face stacking arrangement in some chemical species (quinone anions). The predominant interaction in a particular stacked system modulates the physical properties and defines a strategy for crystal engineering of functional materials.

Abstract
To understand the effect of chemical modification on the stability and proton-electron coupling in neutral radical molecules with a proton-electron-transfer (PET) state, we investigate a nickel dithiolene complex with cyano-substituted pyrazine skeletons using experimental and theoretical methods. A Pourbaix diagram constructed from absorption spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetric measurements strongly suggests that the PET state of the complex is significantly more stable compared with that of the nonsubstituted complex. Theoretical calculations predicted that the introduction of electron-withdrawing groups leads to stabilization of the PET state mainly because of a greater delocalized electron distribution in the molecule. Crystallographic studies, with the support of theoretical calculations, revealed that the degree of coupling between protons and electrons varies depending on the Hammett σ value of the substituents; the electronic state of the nonsubstituted complex appears to be most sensitive to the protonated state mainly owing to the spatially confined π-electron system.

Abstract
The development of molecular materials whose physical properties can be controlled by external stimuli - such as light, electric field, temperature, and pressure - has recently attracted much attention owing to their potential applications in molecular devices. There are a number of ways to alter the physical properties of crystalline materials. These include the modulation of the spin and redox states of the crystal's components, or the incorporation within the crystalline lattice of tunable molecules that exhibit stimuli-induced changes in their molecular structure. A switching behaviour can also be induced by changing the molecular orientation of the crystal's components, even in cases where the overall molecular structure is not affected. Controlling intermolecular interactions within a molecular material is also an effective tool to modulate its physical properties. This Review discusses recent advances in the development of such stimuli-responsive, switchable crystalline compounds - referred to here as dynamic molecular crystals - and suggests how different approaches can serve to prepare functional materials.

Abstract
A dihydroxy-substituted benzothienobenzothiophene, BTBT(OH)2, was synthesized, and its charge-transfer (CT) salt, β-[BTBT(OH)2]2ClO4, was successfully obtained. Thanks to the introduced hydroxy groups, a hydrogen-bonded chain structure connecting the BTBT molecules and counter anions was formed in the CT salt, which effectively increases the dimensionality of the electronic structure and consequently leads to a stable metallic state.

Abstract
A newly synthesized one-dimensional (1D) hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) rhodium(II)-η(5)-semiquinone complex, [Cp*Rh(η(5)-p-HSQ-Me4)]PF6 ([1]PF6; Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; HSQ = semiquinone) exhibits a paraelectric-antiferroelectric second-order phase transition at 237.1 K. Neutron and X-ray crystal structure analyses reveal that the H-bonded proton is disordered over two sites in the room-temperature (RT) phase. The phase transition would arise from this proton disorder together with rotation or libration of the Cp* ring and PF6(-) ion. The relative permittivity εb' along the H-bonded chains reaches relatively high values (ca., 130) in the RT phase. The temperature dependence of (13)C CP/MAS NMR spectra demonstrates that the proton is dynamically disordered in the RT phase and that the proton exchange has already occurred in the low-temperature (LT) phase. Rate constants for the proton exchange are estimated to be 10(-4)-10(-6) s in the temperature range of 240-270 K. DFT calculations predict that the protonation/deprotonation of [1](+) leads to interesting hapticity changes of the semiquinone ligand accompanied by reduction/oxidation by the π-bonded rhodium fragment, producing the stable η(6)-hydroquinone complex, [Cp*Rh(3+)(η(6)-p-H2Q-Me4)](2+) ([2](2+)), and η(4)-benzoquinone complex, [Cp*Rh(+)(η(4)-p-BQ-Me4)] ([3]), respectively. Possible mechanisms leading to the dielectric response are discussed on the basis of the migration of the protonic solitons comprising of [2](2+) and [3], which would be generated in the H-bonded chain.

Abstract
The syntheses of several 3,6-dihalopyromellitic diimides have been achieved. Two-point intermolecular halogen–oxygen interactions—reminiscent of carboxylic acid dimers—are observed in the solid-state superstructures of (i) these molecules and (ii) their charge-transfer complexes with electron-rich naphthalenes.
