Abstract
The fluorinated building block strategy and the direct fluorination strategy are of great importance for the synthesis of new fluorinated molecules. These strategies complement each other and can be combined to develop a new methodology for the construction of a wide variety of fascinating organofluorine compounds. In our opinion, the versatile building blocks used in this method should satisfy the following conditions: 1) readily prepared from commercially available reagents; 2) easy to handle; 3) storage under ordinary conditions without noticeable decomposition; 4) wide applicability. Based on the aforementioned requirements, we focused on the use of vinyl sulfonium salts. This brief review describes the synthesis of five types of fluorinated vinyl sulfonium salts and their reactions. Especially, we featured typical fluorinated groups containing trifluoromethyl (CF3 ), difluoromethyl (CF2 H), monofluoromethyl (CFH2 ), monofluoro (F) or β-bromotetrafluoroethyl (BrCF2 CF2 ) moieties in combination with vinyl sulfonium salts.

Abstract
The development of mild methodology for converting inert C-H bonds to value-added molecules has been an attractive research topic during the last few decades as it offers efficient preparation. Meanwhile, diaryl ketones hold potent applications in antitumor drugs, the agrochemical industry, and synthetic chemistry. Herein, we report versatile palladium-catalyzed carbonylative cross-coupling reactions of aryl thianthrenium salts with arylboronic acids. Arenes were transformed site selectively via C(sp2)-H thianthrenation, and various desired diaryl ketones were produced in good to excellent yields.

Abstract
A widely applicable, practical, and scalable synthetic method for efficient ene-type double oxidation of alkenes is reported via a two-step alkenyl thianthrenium umpolung/Kornblum-Ganem oxidation strategy. This chemo- and stereoselective procedure allows easy access to various α,β-unsaturated carbonyls that may be otherwise difficult or cumbersome to synthesize by conventional methods. For α-olefins, this metal-free transformation can be tuned according to synthetic needs to produce either the elusive (Z)-unsaturated aldehydes or their (E) counterparts. Moreover, this strategy has enabled streamlined synthesis of distinct butadienyl pheromones and kairomones.

Abstract
The photoredox-catalysed Giese-type reaction has emerged as a useful and powerful platform for radical-based transformations. Herein, a novel protocol for the preparation of N-alkylphthalimides has been successfully developed via the reactions of N-vinylphthalimides with radicals using alkyl silicates or Hantzsch esters as the radical precursors. According to the result of deuteration experiments, a mechanism involving a radical addition/SET reduction/protonation process has been proposed. The synthetic application of N-alkylphthalimide has also been demonstrated by deprotecting the phthalimido group using the Ing-Manske procedure.

Abstract
An efficient chemo- and regioselective N-vinylation of N-heteroarenes has been developed using vinylsulfonium salts. The reaction proceeded under mild and transition-metal-free conditions and consistently provided moderate to high yields of vinylation products with 100% E-stereoselectivity. This reaction is also highly chemoselective, and compatible with a variety of functional groups, such as -NHR, -NH2, -OH, -COOH, ester, etc.

Abstract
Aliphatic C-H functionalization at indole 2α-position mediated by acyloxythionium species 1 generated from sulfoxide and acid anhydride has been developed. The combination of sulfoxide and TFAA with O-, N- and C-nucleophiles enabled introduction of various substituents in a one-pot procedure. Especially on utilizing DMSO, the combination provided a practical and efficient method for the synthesis of a wide range of 2α-substituted indoles.

Abstract
(Beta-trifluoromethyl)vinyl sulfonium salt as a novel three-carbon fluorinated building block was conveniently prepared from easily available (beta-trifluoromethyl)vinyl sulfide and diphenyl iodonium salt in excellent yield. This easily handled crystalline reagent displayed two types of useful transformation involving aziridination and vinylation to afford the corresponding trifluoromethylated compounds in excellent yields.

Abstract
The synthesis of d- and l-glycero-alpha-manno-thioheptopyranosides, protected with 4,6-O-alkylidene-type acetals is described. In glycosylations carried out with preactivation with the 1-benzenesulfinylpiperidine/trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride couple, both the D- and L-glycero series exhibit excellent beta-selectivity with a range of glycosyl acceptors. In contrast, a 4,7-O-alkylidene acetal was found not to afford beta-selectivity. With a 4,6-O-[1-cyano-2-(2-iodophenyl)ethylidene] acetal protected thioglycoside, excellent beta-selectivity was obtained in glycosylation reactions, and subsequent treatment with tributyltin hydride and azoisobutyronitrile brought about clean fragmentation to the 6-deoxy-glycero-beta-D-manno-heptopyranosides. This chemistry was applied to the stereocontrolled synthesis of methyl alpha-L-rhamno-pyranosyl-(1-->3)-D-glycero-beta-D-manno-heptopyranosyl-(1-->3)-6-deoxy-glycero-beta-D-manno-heptopyranosyl-(1-->4)-alpha-L-rhamno-pyranoside, a component of the lipopolysaccharide from Plesimonas shigelloides.
