Abstract
This study aimed to elucidate the causal genetic relationships between iron, copper, zinc, magnesium, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted using the "TwoSampleMR" and "MendelianRandomization" packages in R. The random-effects inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method was used as the primary approach. We performed sensitivity analyses to test the reliability of the results. The random-effects IVW analysis revealed that there was no genetic causal relationship between iron (P = 0.429, odds ratio [OR] 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.919 [0.746-1.133]), copper (P = 0.313, OR 95% CI = 0.973 [0.921-1.027]), zinc (P = 0.633, OR 95% CI = 0.978 [0.891-1.073]), or magnesium (P = 0.218, OR 95% CI = 0.792 [0.546-1.148]) and RA. Sensitivity analysis verified the reliability of the results. Therefore, there is no evidence to support a causal relationship between iron, copper, zinc, and magnesium intake at the genetic level and the development of RA.

Abstract
The antioxidant effects of selenium as a component of selenoproteins has been thought to modulate host immunity and viral pathogenesis. Accordingly, the association of low dietary selenium status with inflammatory and immunodeficiency has been reported in the literature; however, the causal role of selenium deficiency in chronic inflammatory diseases and viral infection is still undefined. The COVID-19, characterized by acute respiratory syndrome and caused by the novel coronavirus 2, SARS-CoV-2, has infected millions of individuals worldwide since late 2019. The severity and mortality from COVID-19 have been associated with several factor, including age, sex and selenium deficiency. However, available data on selenium status and COVID-19 are limited, and a possible causative role for selenium deficiency in COVID-19 severity has yet to be fully addressed. In this context, we review the relationship between selenium, selenoproteins, COVID-19, immune and inflammatory responses, viral infection, and aging. Regardless of the role of selenium in immune and inflammatory responses, we emphasize that selenium supplementation should be indicated after a selenium deficiency be detected, particularly, in view of the critical role played by selenoproteins in human health. In addition, the levels of selenium should be monitored after the start of supplementation and discontinued as soon as normal levels are reached. Periodic assessment of selenium levels after supplementation is a critical issue to avoid over production of toxic metabolites of selenide because under normal conditions, selenoproteins attain saturated expression levels that limits their potential deleterious metabolic effects.

Abstract
This study aims to compare the concentrations of circulating levels of iron, zinc, and copper in blood samples of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients which determine the correlations with inflammation and disease activity. A total of 102 RA patients and 66 healthy controls were enrolled. Circulation of iron, zinc, and copper levels in whole blood were assessed. Hemoglobin, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), anticyclic citrullinated peptide antibody (anti-CCP) levels were collected. A meta-analysis was performed to validate our findings. Single and multiple variate generalized linear regression were applied to identify the correlation between trace elements and clinical characteristics. Blood copper level was significantly higher in RA patients (P < 0.001), while iron and zinc levels were decreased (P < 0.001 and P = 0.02, respectively). Meta-analysis confirmed our findings for zinc (SMD = - 1.17, P < 0.001) and copper (SMD = 1.24, P < 0.001). Copper level was positively correlated with DAS28-CRP (r = 0.35, P < 0.01), CRP (r = 0.45, P < 0.01) and ESR (r = 0.58, P < 0.01). Iron level was negatively correlated with DAS28-CRP (r = - 0.37, P < 0.01), CRP (r = - 0.46, P < 0.01) and ESR (r = - 0.55, P < 0.01). Circulating blood copper was significantly higher and positively correlated with DAS28-CRP and inflammatory markers, while circulating blood iron was decreased and negatively correlated with DAS28-CRP and inflammatory markers in RA patients.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common chronic inflammation-mediated disorder having systematic complications. RA triggers a self-directed inflammatory and immunological cascade that culminates in joint destruction. Though a range of treatment options are available, none of them are without adverse effects and this has led researchers to search for alternative solutions. Nanomedicine has emerged as a powerful therapeutic alternative, and selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient trace element that has a crucial role in human health and disease. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) derived from biological sources, such as plants, bacteria, fungi, and proteins, have exhibited remarkable candidate properties and toxicological profiles, and hence have shown potential to be used as antirheumatic agents. The potential of SeNPs can be attributed to the effect of functional groups bound to them, concentration, and most importantly to their nano range size. The antirheumatic effect of SeNPs is considerable due to its potential in amelioration of oxidative stress-mediated inflammation via downregulation of radical and nonradical species, markers of inflammation, and upregulation of inherent antioxidant defenses. The size and concentration impact of SeNPs has been shown in the subsequent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Moreover, the article emphasizes the role of these biogenic SeNPs as a notable option in the nanomedicine arena that needs to be further studied as a prospective remedial alternative to cure RA and medication-related adverse events.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease that can cause joint damage. Among the environmental risk factors, diet plays an important role because it can aggravate or attenuate inflammation. Selenium (Se) is considered an essential trace element since it is a structural component of antioxidant enzymes; however, its concentration can be affected by diet, drugs and genetic polymorphisms. Studies have reported that RA patients have a deficient diet in some food groups that is associated with parameters of disease activity. Furthermore, it has been shown that there is an alteration in serum Se levels in this population. Although some clinical trials have been conducted in the past to analyze the effect of Se supplementation in RA, no significant results were obtained. Contrastingly, experimental studies that have evaluated the effect of novel Se nanoparticles in RA-induced models have shown promising results on the restoration of antioxidant enzyme levels. In particular, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is an important selenoprotein that could have a modulating effect on inflammation in RA. Considering that RA patients present an inflammatory and oxidative state, the aim of this review is to give an overview of the current knowledge about the relevance of Se status in RA.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Environmental risk factors regrading rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have not been explored extensively. Selenium (Se), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) nutrients were reported to associate with RA, but the results were inconsistent. Therefore, we conduct present study to meta-analyze the relationship between serum Se, Zn and Cu and RA and review the potential mechanisms. METHODS PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were comprehensively searched till October 1, 2018 for pertinent studies. Standard mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confident intervals (CIs) were calculated according to random effects model. RESULTS Finally 41 literatures were included. Meta-analysis of 16 studies involving 806 RA patients and 959 health controls showed that serum Se (SMD = -1.04, 95% CI = -1.58 to -0.50) was decreased in RA patients, and 23 literatures with 1398 patients and 1299 controls reported serum Zn (SMD = -1.20, 95% CI = -1.74 to -0.67) was decreased. But serum Cu (SMD = 1.26, 95% CI = 0.63 to -1.89) was increased with 26 studies including 1723 patients and 1451 controls. Meta-regression reported that steroid use was positively related to serum level of Se in RA (β = 0.041, 95% CI = 0.002 to 0.079). Differences in serum Se, Zn and Cu between rheumatoid arthritis patients and controls were all related with the geographical distribution. CONCLUSIONS Patients with RA have significant decreased serum Se and Zn and increased serum Cu than health controls, suggesting potential roles of Se, Zn and Cu in the pathogenesis of RA. Patients and rheumatologist should give enough attention to the monitor of these elements during follow up.

Abstract
A functional immune system is essential for healthy life. This is achieved by the coordinate activation and interaction of different immune cells. One should be aware that activation of the immune response is as important as its deactivation when the pathogens are cleared, as otherwise host tissue can be damaged up to life-threatening levels. Autoimmune diseases (AID) represent a phenomenon of immune cells attacking host cells and tissue. Five to eight percent of the world's population are currently affected by 80-100 AID. In recent years, the incidence has been constantly increasing, reaching alarmingly high numbers particularly for type 1 diabetes mellitus, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome and multiple sclerosis. This indicates a higher societal burden of AID for the future. This article provides an overview of general concepts of triggers and underlying mechanisms leading to self-destruction. Lately, several original concepts of disease etiology were revised, and there is a variety of hypotheses on triggers, underlying mechanisms and preventive actions. This article concentrates on the importance of nutrition, especially zinc and vitamin D, for balancing the immune function. Homespun nutritional remedies seem to reenter today's therapeutic strategies. Current treatment approaches are largely symptomatic or suppress the immune system. However, recent studies reveal significant benefits of nutrition-related therapeutic approaches including prevention and treatment of established disease, which offer a cost-efficient and trigger-unspecific alternative addressing balancing rather than suppression of the immune system. Zinc and vitamin D are currently the best studied and most promising candidates for therapeutic intervention.

Abstract
A considerable attention has been focused on the possible association between ultra-trace elements (UTEs) status and pathogenesis of many diseases including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). UTEs have important roles in numerous metabolic processes. Serum Cs, Rb, and Re levels in RA are not studied previously. The correlation of serum Cs, Rb, and Re levels with the well-known serological parameters, anticyclic citrullinated protein antibody (ACPA), C-reactive protein (CRP), ESR, and rheumatoid factor (RF) is also not studied previously. The present study aimed to measure the level and the correlation between serum UTEs with various blood tests results in RA patients. Serum Cs, Rb, Re, ACPA, CRP, RF, and ESR were measured in Iraqi RA patients who have a positive ACPA (ACPA > 25 U/ml) and compared with healthy individuals. There were significant elevations (p < 0.05) in serum levels of all the measured parameters as compared with those of the healthy control group except Rb and uric acid which have not been changed. Subgrouping of patients according to the results of CRP and RF leads to different results. In the low-CRP group, the high-RF subgroup showed an elevation of ACPA, Cs, and ESR in comparison with the low-RF patients. In the high-CRP group, the patients with high RF showed an increase in the levels of Cs, Rb, ESR, and ACPA. The patient group with high RF and high CRP showed more significant correlations between serum UTEs and serological tests. Serum levels of UTEs were significantly altered in RA patients. The variations in the serum levels of the measured parameters in RA need more investigation to explore the possible association between these UTEs and RA. RA subgroups, according to the results of CRP and CPA, produce more and various information than taking RA as a whole group in the estimation of UTEs.

Abstract
Both selenium, as an effector and regulator of antioxidative enzymes activity, and thyroid hormones are potent immunomodulators. Besides, selenium incorporated into iodothyronine deiodinases is involved in the thyroid function and thus indirectly regulates the immune response. Studies of the mutual influence of selenium and thyroid hormones on the immune response are scarce, hence we analyzed the effects of an iodothyronine deiodinases blocker, propylthiouracil (PTU), and selenium deficiency on the function of peritoneal macrophages, and titer of naturally occurring anti-sheep red blood cells (SRBC) IgM antibodies in juvenile rats. The experiment was carried out on 64 Wistar male rats allotted to 4 groups: controlselenium adequate PTU- group; selenium adequate, PTU+ group; selenium defi cient, PTU- group; and selenium defi cient, PTU+. The selenium adequate and selenium defi cient groups were fed a diet containing 0.334 and 0.031 mg Se/kg, respectively. PTU+ groups received PTU (150 mg/L) in drinking water. After 3 weeks, thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were determined. The animals having “intermediate” concentrations of T3 (1.56-1.69 nmol/L) and T4 (41-50 nmol/L) were excluded from further analysis. Thus, PTU+ groups included hypothyroid animals (T3≤1.55 nmol/L; T4≤40 nmol/L), while PTU- groups included euthyroid rats (T3≥1.70 nmol/L; T4≥50 nmol/L). Both groups of selenium deficient rats had, when compared to the control group, a significantly lower activity of glutathione peroxidase GPx1 and GPx3. Neither selenium deficiency nor PTU influenced the adherence of peritoneal macrophages. Selenium deficiency significantly decreased the peroxide synthesis in macrophages and significantly increased the titer of anti-SRBC IgM. Hypotyroidism alone or in combination with selenium deficiency had no influence on these parameters.
