Factors Affecting the Global Health and Cultural Competencies of Nursing Students

Recently, various global health issues, including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), have been observed in relation to rapid changes in world health conditions; consequently, nurses’ global health and cultural knowledge have become increasingly important. Therefore, this study aimed to identify factors affecting the global health and cultural competencies of nursing students. The study design was a cross-sectional study with 108 participants; all participants were fourth-year nursing college students in S and C cities. Global health competency, cultural competency, global health confidence, cultural nursing confidence, and metacognition were surveyed online, and the data were collected from October 30 to November 7, 2018. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Pearson’s correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression. The total mean scores for global health competency and the cultural nursing competency were 63.01 ± 8.78 and 134.94 ± 17.78, respectively. Global health competency had a positive correlation with cultural competency (r = 0.49, p < 0.001), cultural nursing confidence (r = 0.26, p = 0.006), and metacognition (r = 0.22, p = 0.023). Cultural competency showed a positive correlation with global health confidence (r = 0.31, p = 0.001), cultural nursing confidence (r = 0.51, p < 0.001), and metacognition (r = 0.40, p < 0.001). Cultural competency was found to be a significant factor affecting global health competency, with an explanatory power of 23.1% (F = 17.10, p < 0.001). Cultural nursing confidence and metacognition had significant effects on cultural competency, with an explanatory power of 34.3% (F = 14.97, p < 0.001). Cultural confidence and metacognition were important factors influencing cultural competency, and cultural competency was shown to be an important factor influencing global health competency.

Development and Evaluation of the Course on Global Health Nursing for Indian Nursing Students

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of the course on Global Health Nursing for Indian nursing students, intended to introduce the course as a selective course in the nursing curriculum. Methods: A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group pre- and post-test design was carried out. The study participants were fifty final grade nursing students, considered as an experimental (n = 25) and control group (n = 25). The participants recruited by purposive sampling were fifty 4th grade nursing students (experimental 25, control 25) at St. X College of Nursing, India. The course on Global Health Nursing was developed by using the ADDIE model, and the duration of the course was about 16 h over three weeks. The course was implemented based on Gagné’s instructional method. Data were collected by self-perceived scales of Global Health Nursing before and after the course, the participants’ opinions, and feedback providing comments about the course. Results: The study results showed improvement in knowledge (F = 8.48; p < 0.001), skills (F = 96.14; p < 0.001), and performance on Global Health Nursing (F = 5.50; p < 0.001) and was statistically significant. Moreover, the participants described that they were satisfied with the quality of teaching–learning and achieved the learning goals. Conclusion: The outcome of this study could be extended to the existing nursing curriculum and would be modified to formulate a standard module in the curriculum of the Indian nursing system. The study offers implications for different fields of nursing, including nursing education, research, and practice in India.

An Online International Collaborative Learning Program During the COVID-19 Pandemic for Nursing Students: Mixed Methods Study

BACKGROUND

Given the limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, a better understanding of how nursing programs around the globe have implemented distance education methods and related initiatives to provide international collaborative learning opportunities as well as complementary aspects of practical education would be constructive for nursing students. It is expected that international collaboratives through web-based communication will continue to be increasingly utilized after the pandemic; therefore, it is time to discuss the effects and direction of these developments.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to examine the impact of an online international collaborative learning program on prelicensure nursing students' international and global competencies in South Korea.

METHODS

We conducted a mixed methods study (web-based surveys and focus group interviews). A total of 15 students participated in the study. The surveys were used to examine changes in participants' global leadership competencies, and the focus group interviews were used to evaluate the program's effectiveness and to identify opportunities for improvement. The online international collaborative program consisted of 7 synchronous web-based classroom sessions. Each session ran for 60 to 90 minutes. Faculty experts and nurses working in the United States discussed various topics with students, such as nursing education in the United States and evidence-based teaching and learning. The students gave presentations on the South Korean nursing education system. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, the Mann-Whitney U test, and content analysis methods.

RESULTS

Participants reported improvement in their global leadership competencies. Four main categories emerged from analysis of the focus interviews: (1) realistic applicability, (2) clarification, (3) expansion of perspectives, and (4) initiative.

CONCLUSIONS

The online international collaborative learning program had a positive impact on the development of students' international competencies. The findings support the further development of international exchange programs through web-based meetings in the postpandemic era.

Development and effectiveness of a global health competency promotion program for Korean undergraduate nursing students

Aim

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a programme designed to promote global health competency among nursing students.

Design

It used a randomized pre–post‐test comparison group design to compare the effects of a global health competency programme among nursing students.

Methods

Data collection for the pre‐test was carried out for 2 days (25–26 October 2018) and that of post‐test was conducted for 2 days (23–24 December 2018). A total of 38 fourth‐year nursing students participated in this study (14 in the international nursing group, 11 in the transcultural nursing group and 13 in the complementary and alternative medicine group). The participants were from the nursing department of a university in Cheongju.

Results

There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in the pre‐test homogeneity test. The international nursing group showed statistically significant improvements between the pre‐ and post‐tests in global health competency, cultural competency, global health confidence and cultural nursing confidence.

Nursing students' experiences of a global outreach program: A mixed-method study

Global health competency is an essential capacity for nursing students. This study evaluated the effect of a global outreach program on global health competency and cultural self-efficacy in nursing students and examined the students' experiences with the program. Participants included thirty-one undergraduate nursing students at a university in Seoul, Republic of Korea, who participated in a global outreach program in 2015 and 2016. Quantitative data were collected before and after program participation using questionnaires evaluating global health competency and cultural self-efficacy, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests. Both global health competency and cultural self-efficacy increased significantly after the global outreach program. Qualitative data were collected via focus group interviews and reflective journals, and were analyzed using conventional content analysis and thematic analysis, respectively. The results of the content and thematic analyses were compared, and two themes and eight-sub-themes were finally extracted through the data analysis. The program was effective in improving nursing students' global health competency and cultural self-efficacy.

Development and Application of a Program for Reinforcing Global Health Competencies in University Nursing Students

Purpose: With globalization, the importance of global health is being stressed. Although nurses are indispensable healthcare professionals, programs to develop nurses with global health competencies and relevant studies are rare. Accordingly, this study was designed to develop a program to increase global health competencies and global leadership in nursing students and test its effect.

Methods: A single group pre- and post-test study design was used. A 13-weeks program was developed and implemented with 204 students. Data were analyzed using paired t-test. The program to promote global health competencies was designed to improve nursing students' knowledge of global health, global leadership, global health competencies, critical thinking ability, and student-student partnership.

Results: Global health competencies (t = −19.96, p < 0.001), self-assessed global leadership (t = −7.67, p < 0.001), and critical thinking ability (t = −7.67, p < 0.001) all significantly increased.

Discussion: The study findings of increased global health competencies and global leadership in nursing students after participation in the program indicated ways in which global health competencies of nurses need to be developed. Therefore, the following aspects should be considered. First, nursing educators should understand the need and importance of global health education and accordingly, current nursing curriculums should be revised to include courses about global health. A systematic course of studies about global health should be developed and implemented based on discussions among experts and researchers. Second, as future health care professionals, nursing students should take an interest in global health problems and recognize various issues that need to be solved beyond borders between countries. To develop global health competencies, various efforts and systematic curriculum revisions are necessary.

Análise da efetividade do estágio prático internacional de enfermagem em relação ao estágio prático nacional de enfermagem

Resumo Objetivo: Este estudo foi conduzido para avaliar a efetividade do estágio prático internacional de enfermagem quanto à autoeficácia, competência cultural e competência global. Foi utilizada a análise fatorial para avaliar a confiabilidade das medidas do estudo. Métodos: Um método de amostragem intencional foi usado para coletar os dados: os participantes eram estudantes de enfermagem (n=66) do segundo semestre do terceiro ano do curso de graduação. Para a análise fatorial, foram agrupados os resultados obtidos dos grupos controle e experimental (n=132) por meio de um questionário. A pesquisa foi realizada antes e após o estágio prático nacional e internacional de enfermagem para os grupos controle e experimental, respectivamente. O teste t foi utilizado para comparar os dois grupos, e Diferença em Diferenças (DD) foi utilizado para determinar a verdadeira alteração entre antes e depois do estágio. A análise do DD também mostrou que o nível de mudança antes e depois de cada estágio de enfermagem foi significativa entre os grupos controle e experimental. Resultados: A análise fatorial demonstrou que o questionário da pesquisa mensurou com confiabilidade os subconceitos. As diferenças na autoeficácia e na competência cultural entre os dois grupos foram estatisticamente significativas antes e depois do tratamento, mas os resultados de DD não foram significativos. Para a competência global, no entanto, tanto o DD quanto a diferença antes e depois do tratamento entre os dois grupos foram estatisticamente significativos. Conclusão: Apesar de algumas limitações do estudo, o desenho inovador gerou resultados que ajudam a preencher uma grande lacuna no conhecimento de enfermagem. Estudos futuros devem incluir um ensaio clínico randomizado para superar as limitações de viés de amostragem e generalização dos resultados do estudo.

Capacity Development in an Undergraduate Nursing Program in Vietnam

Background: Nurses are an essential human resource to ensure a healthy population and support the socio-economic development. However, little research has focused on the capacity development of nurses.

Objective: The performance of a capacity development project for an undergraduate nursing program in Vietnam was reviewed to share lessons.

Design: A descriptive case report.

Setting: A baccalaureate nursing program in Vietnam from June 2014 to June 2016.

Methods: A case report was analyzed in terms of the project's process, and the outcomes of 2 years' activities were evaluated.

Results: Practice-based curriculum redesign and two basic nursing subjects were developed after five rounds of curriculum workshops. To improve application efficiency, two nursing experts were dispatched to provide instructions regarding the application of the new subjects. Three candidates were invited to complete their master's and doctoral studies in Korea. An advanced nursing education environment was supported with simulation labs equipped within a ubiquitous network. The result of experts' evaluation was excellent by every criterion of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development—Development Assistance Committee.

Conclusions: The capacity development of a nursing program was possible through ownership, accountability, and results-based management. Gradual improvement in nursing academic and clinical capacity building based on research evidence can empower partner countries' nursing leadership. Introduction.

An Effective Model for Improving Global Health Nursing Competence

This paper proposed an effective model for improving global health nursing competence among undergraduate students. A descriptive case study was conducted by evaluation of four implemented programs by the author. All programs were conducted with students majoring in nursing and healthcare, where the researcher was a program director, professor, or facilitator. These programs were analyzed in terms of students' needs assessment, program design, and implementation and evaluation factors. The concept and composition of global nursing competence, identified within previous studies, were deemed appropriate in all of our programs. Program composition varied from curricular to extracurricular domains. During the implementation phase, some of the programs included non-Korean students to improve cultural diversity and overcome language barriers. Qualitative and quantitative surveys were conducted to assess program efficacy. Data triangulation from students' reflective journals was examined. Additionally, students' awareness regarding changes within global health nursing, improved critical thinking, cultural understanding, and global leadership skills were investigated pre- and post-program implementation. The importance of identifying students' needs regarding global nursing competence when developing appropriate curricula is discussed.
