Abstract
The goal of this study was to determine the plasma concentrations of the acute phase proteins fibrinogen and ceruloplasmin during the pregnancy and postpartum period in goats. The experiment was carried out with six clinically healthy Bulgarian native goats, aged 4-6 years, weighing 49-56 kg, reared at the Biobase of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine – Stara Zagora. Blood samples for assay of plasma concentrations of the studied acute-phase proteins during pregnancy were collected over 7-day intervals, from the 14th to the 147th day of pregnancy. During the postpartum period, samples were obtained at 3-day intervals between the 1st and 15th postpartum day, as well as once on the 20th and 30th day after the parturition. The results indicated that throughout the first trimester of the pregnancy, the highest average plasma fibrinogen values were established on the 14th day, while significantly lower values (P<0.05) were measured on the 21st day. At this period, the values of plasma ceruloplasmin were the lowest on the 28th day and significantly higher (P<0.01) at the end of the first pregnancy trimester. During the second trimester of the pregnancy there was a clear tendency towards a decrease in the levels of the examined acute phase proteins. At the last pregnancy trimester, an increase in the levels of both acute phase proteins was observed. During the postpartum period there was a significant decrease (P<0.05) in the levels of ceruloplasmin and fibrinogen on the 20th day, compared to the first postpartum day. The established average values of the examined acute phase proteins could be used for comparison purposes in cases of pathological conditions during the pregnancy and post partum period of goats.

Abstract
Dairy cows are exposed to increased inflammatory processes in the transition period from late pregnancy to early lactation. Essential fatty acids (EFA) and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) are thought to modulate the inflammatory response in dairy cows. The present study investigated the effects of a combined EFA and CLA infusion on the fatty acid (FA) status in plasma lipids, and whether changes in the FA pattern were associated with the acute phase and inflammatory response during late pregnancy and early lactation. Rumen-cannulated Holstein cows (n = 40) were assigned from wk 9 antepartum to wk 9 postpartum to 1 of 4 treatment groups. Cows were abomasally supplemented with coconut oil (CTRL, 76 g/d), linseed and safflower oil (EFA, 78 g/d of linseed oil and 4 g/d of safflower oil; ratio of oils = 19.5:1; n-6:n-3 FA ratio = 1:3), Lutalin (CLA, 38 g/d; isomers cis-9,trans-11 and trans-10,cis-12; each 10 g/d), or both (EFA+CLA). Blood samples were taken to measure changes in FA in blood plasma on d -63, -42, 1, 28, and 56, and in plasma lipid fractions (cholesterol esters, free fatty acids, phospholipids, and triglycerides) on d -42, 1, and 56 relative to calving, and in erythrocyte membrane (EM) on d 56 after calving. Traits related to the acute phase response and inflammation were measured in blood throughout the study. Liver samples were obtained for biopsy on d -63, -21, 1, 28, and 63 relative to calving to measure the mRNA abundance of genes related to the inflammatory response. The concentrations of α-linolenic acid and n-3 FA metabolites increased in lipid fractions (especially phospholipids) and EM due to EFA supplementation with higher α-linolenic acid but lower n-3 metabolite concentrations in EFA+CLA than in EFA treatment only. Concentration of linoleic acid decreased in plasma fat toward calving and increased during early lactation in all groups. Concentration of plasma arachidonic acid was lower in EFA- than in non-EFA-treated groups in lipid fractions and EM. The cis-9,trans-11 CLA increased in all lipid fractions and EM after both CLA treatments. Plasma haptoglobin was lowered by EFA treatment before calving. Plasma bilirubin was lower in EFA and CLA than in CTRL at calving. Plasma concentration of IL-1β was higher in EFA than in CTRL and EFA+CLA at certain time points before and after calving. Plasma fibrinogen dropped faster in CLA than in EFA and EFA+CLA on d 14 postpartum. Plasma paraoxonase tended to be elevated by EFA treatment, and was higher in EFA+CLA than in CTRL on d 49. Hepatic mRNA abundance revealed time changes but no treatment effects with respect to the inflammatory response. Our data confirmed the enrichment of n-3 FA in EM by EFA treatment and the inhibition of n-3 FA desaturation by CLA treatment. The elevated n-3 FA status and reduced n-6:n-3 ratio by EFA treatment indicated a more distinct effect on the inflammatory response during the transition period than the single CLA treatment, and the combined EFA+CLA treatment caused minor additional changes on the anti-inflammatory response.

Abstract
Autologous biologics, defined as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMC), are cell-based therapy treatment options in regenerative medicine practices, and have been increasingly used in orthopedics, sports medicine, and spinal disorders. These biological products are produced at point-of-care; thereby, avoiding expensive and cumbersome culturing and expansion techniques. Numerous commercial PRP and BMC systems are available but reports and knowledge of bio-cellular formulations produced by these systems are limited. This limited information hinders evaluating clinical and research outcomes and thus making conclusions about their biological effectiveness. Some of their important cellular and protein properties have not been characterized, which is critical for understanding the mechanisms of actions involved in tissue regenerative processes. The presence and role of red blood cells (RBCs) in any biologic has not been addressed extensively. Furthermore, some of the pathophysiological effects and phenomena related to RBCs have not been studied. A lack of a complete understanding of all of the biological components and their functional consequences hampers the development of clinical standards for any biological preparation. This paper aims to review the clinical implications and pathophysiological effects of RBCs in PRP and BMC; emphasizes hemolysis, eryptosis, and the release of macrophage inhibitory factor; and explains several effects on the microenvironment, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, vasoconstriction, and impaired cell metabolism. Different biological formulations optimize disease specific regenerative treatment protocols. Disintegrated RBC's release harmful components to regenerative therapy treatment vials. The effectiveness of MSC injection depends on the quality of the bone marrow aspiration procedure. PRP and BMC should contain minimal to no erythrocytes.

Abstract
Over the past decade significant advancement has occurred in the biological and pathological role that Hp has in cardiovascular disease. Hp is an acute-phase protein with a role in the neutralization and clearance of free heme. Iron has tremendous potential for initiating vascular oxidation, inflammation and exacerbating coronary atherosclerosis. Hp genotype has been linked as a prognostic biomarker of acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, restenosis and cardiac transplant rejection. The increased understanding of Hp as a biomarker has provided new insights into the mechanisms of inflammation after cardiac injury and support the concept that Hp is not only an important antioxidant in vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis, but also an enhancer of inflammation in cardiac transplant.

TNFα altered inflammatory responses, impaired health and productivity, but did not affect glucose or lipid metabolism in early-lactation dairy cows. PLoS One 2013; 8:e80316. Abstract
Inflammation may be a major contributing factor to peripartum metabolic disorders in dairy cattle. We tested whether administering an inflammatory cytokine, recombinant bovine tumor necrosis factor-α (rbTNFα), affects milk production, metabolism, and health during this period. Thirty-three Holstein cows (9 primiparous and 24 multiparous) were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments at parturition. Treatments were 0 (Control), 1.5, or 3.0 µg/kg body weight rbTNFα, which were administered once daily by subcutaneous injection for the first 7 days of lactation. Statistical contrasts were used to evaluate the treatment and dose effects of rbTNFα administration. Plasma TNFα concentrations at 16 h post-administration tended to be increased (P<0.10) by rbTNFα administration, but no dose effect (P>0.10) was detected; rbTNFα treatments increased (P<0.01) concentrations of plasma haptoglobin. Most plasma eicosanoids were not affected (P>0.10) by rbTNFα administration, but 6 out of 16 measured eicosanoids changed (P<0.05) over the first week of lactation, reflecting elevated inflammatory mediators in the days immediately following parturition. Dry matter and water intake, milk yield, and milk fat and protein yields were all decreased (P<0.05) by rbTNFα treatments by 15 to 18%. Concentrations of plasma glucose, insulin, β-hydroxybutyrate, non-esterified fatty acids, triglyceride, 3-methylhistidine, and liver triglyceride were unaffected (P>0.10) by rbTNFα treatment. Glucose turnover rate was unaffected (P = 0.18) by rbTNFα administration. The higher dose of rbTNFα tended to increase the risk of cows developing one or more health disorders (P = 0.08). Taken together, these results indicate that administration of rbTNFα daily for the first 7 days of lactation altered inflammatory responses, impaired milk production and health, but did not significantly affect liver triglyceride accumulation or nutrient metabolism in dairy cows.

Abstract
The present study was carried out to describe the clinical picture of traumatic reticuloperitonitis (TRP) in water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) and to evaluate the inflammatory and immunologic responses for this clinical condition. Twenty-two buffalo with acute local TRP were monitored in our study. Additionally, 10 clinically healthy buffalo were randomly selected and served as controls. Acute local TRP was initially diagnosed by clinical examination and confirmed by ultrasonographic (USG) examination and/or necropsy findings. Blood samples were collected from all examined buffalo to measure the respective levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-10 and interferon gamma (INF)-γ, serum amyloid A (SAA), C-reactive protein (CRP), haptoglobin (Hp), fibrinogen (Fb), and serum sialic acid (SSA). It was found that TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, SAA, CRP, Hp, Fb, and SSA were significantly higher in buffalo with TRP than the controls. Our findings suggest that the examined immunologic variables were helpful in documenting the inflammatory response in buffalo with TRP. However, their diagnostic usefulness only becomes apparent when considered in tandem with the clinical findings for any given animal, its anamnesis, and a subsequent USG assessment. Due to the frequent complications of TRP, more accurate indicators of its occurrence and severity would be useful.

Abstract
Haptoglobin (Hp) is a plasma protein with haemoglobin binding capacity important in maintaining the iron homeostasis and in disease processes influenced by iron metabolism. In cattle Hp is one of the major acute phase proteins, and increases rapidly during infectious disease. At acute clinical mastitis in dairy cows the Hp concentration increases markedly both in blood and milk. Hepatocytes are considered to be the main origin of Hp, but expression of Hp mRNA has also been found in the mammary gland and leukocytes in healthy cattle. In the present study we show that bovine granulocytes, isolated from peripheral blood of healthy cattle, contain abundant amounts of Hp within the granules. As shown by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) in combination with matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF-MS) bovine granulocyte Hp consists of two sets of peptides ca. 20 kDa (alpha-chains) and ca. 40 kDa (beta-chains) with multiple iso-forms.

Abstract
Acute phase proteins (APP) are regarded as a useful diagnostic tool in humans with lymphomas, leukaemias and multiple myeloma. C-reactive protein (CRP) and haptoglobin concentrations were measured in dogs with malignant multicentric (high grade) lymphoma (n=16), acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) (n=11), chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) (n=7) and multiple myeloma (n=8). Twenty-five healthy dogs served as controls. Measurements of the CRP plasma concentration were performed using a commercial ELISA and haptoglobin was measured with an assay based on its haemoglobin binding capacity. Global group comparisons using Kruskal-Wallis-test revealed significant group differences for both APPs (P<0.0001). Median CRP concentrations were increased in all groups with neoplastic lymphatic disorders (lymphoma: 37.2mg/L, ALL: 47.8mg/L, CLL: 35.5mg/L, myeloma: 17.6mg/L) compared to controls (1.67mg/L; P<0.001). Compared to the healthy controls (median=0.59g/L), haptoglobin was especially increased in dogs with ALL (6.8g/L, P<0.0001) followed by dogs with malignant lymphoma (3.8g/L, P<0.0001), CLL (3.2g/L, P=0.0008), and multiple myeloma (3.0g/L, P=0.0163). For both APPs, a wide range of values was found in all patient groups. The results indicate that particularly severe and acute lymphatic neoplasia, such as high grade lymphoma and ALL, cause significant acute phase reactions in dogs and must be included in the differential diagnoses of increased blood levels of these APPs.

Abstract
We have isolated from calf serum a protein with an apparent M(r) of 120,000. The protein was detected by using antibodies against major acute-phase protein in pigs with acute inflammation. The amino acid sequence of an internal fragment revealed that this protein is the bovine counterpart of ITIH4, the heavy chain 4 of the inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor family. The response of this protein in the sera was determined for animals during experimental bacterial and viral infections. In the bacterial model, animals were inoculated with a mixture of Actinomyces pyogenes, Fusobacterium necrophorum, and Peptostreptococcus indolicus to induce an acute-phase reaction. All animals developed moderate to severe clinical mastitis and exhibited remarkable increases in ITIH4 concentration in serum (from 3 to 12 times the initial values, peaking at 48 to 72 h after infection) that correlated with the severity of the disease. Animals with experimental infections with bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) also showed increases in ITIH4 concentration (from two- to fivefold), which peaked at around 7 to 8 days after inoculation. Generally, no response was seen after a second infection of the same animals with the virus. Because of the significant induction of the protein in the animals in the mastitis and BRSV infection models, we can conclude that ITIH4 is a new positive acute-phase protein in cattle.

Abstract
The acute phase proteins (APP) are a group of blood proteins that contribute to restoring homeostasis and limiting microbial growth in an antibody-independent manner in animals subjected to infection, inflammation, surgical trauma or stress. In the last two decades, many advances have been made in monitoring APP in both farm and companion animals for clinical and experimental purposes. Also, the mechanism of the APP response is receiving attention in veterinary science in connection with the innate immune systems of animals. This review describes the results of recent research on animal APP, with special reference to their induction and regulatory mechanisms, their biological functions, and their current and future applications to veterinary diagnosis and animal production.

Abstract
Acute phase proteins (APP) are synthesised in the liver in response to the systemic presence of high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Bacteria are considered to be strong inducers of APP whereas viruses are weak or non-inducers of APP. Very few reports have been published on APP induction by parasites. Here, we report that the tick-borne protozoan parasite of cattle, Theileria annulata, induced an atypical acute phase response in cattle. Following experimental infection, serum amyloid A (SAA) appeared first, followed by a rise in alpha(1) acid glycoprotein (alpha(1)AGP) in all animals, whereas haptoglobin, which is a major APP in cattle, only appeared in some of the animals, and generally at a low level. All three APP only became elevated around or after the appearance of schizonts in draining lymph nodes and after the first observed temperature rise. Increased alpha(1)AGP levels coincided with the appearance of piroplasms. The production of SAA and alpha(1)AGP correlated strongly with each other, and also with some clinical measures of disease severity including the time to fever, development of leucopaenia, parasitaemia and mortality. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that T. annulata causes severe pathology in susceptible cattle by inducing high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Abstract
We examined the regulation of haptoglobin (Hp) secretion in primary cultured bovine hepatocytes using recombinant bovine (rb) proinflammatory cytokines. The concentrations of Hp in the supernatant of cultured hepatocytes after incubation with rb interleukin (IL)-6, rb tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, rbIL-1 beta or rbIFN-gamma alone or with combinations of two of these cytokines were measured by ELISA. The rbIL-6, rbTNF-alpha and rbIL-1 beta increased Hp synthesis, but rbIFN-gamma did not, and rbIL-6 was the most effective Hp inducer among these cytokines. The Hp secretion was accelerated synergistically by combined treatment with rbIL-6 and rbTNF-alpha, whereas it remained unchanged with a combination of rbIL-6 and rbIL-1 beta. In contrast, the combination of rbIL-6 and rbIFN-gamma downregulated Hp secretion. In conclusion, IL-6 is the principal cytokine in Hp secretion in bovine hepatocytes in vitro, and its activity may be regulated by other cytokines.

Abstract
Repeated ultrasonographic examinations and collections of blood samples and uterine lumenal swabs between seven and 28 days after calving were used to examine the relative effects of bacterial contamination and involution of the uterus on the concentrations of acute phase proteins in the blood of 26 dairy cows. The severity of bacterial contamination, as determined by the total bacterial growth score, was a significant variable for the concentrations of the acute phase proteins alpha1-acid glycoprotein (P < 0.0001), haptoglobin (P < 0.05) and ceruloplasmin (P < 0.0001). In addition, the concentrations of alpha1-acid glycoprotein and ceruloplasmin were increased in the cows from which Escherichia coli (P < 0.0001) and Arcanobacterium pyogenes (P < 0.05), respectively, were isolated from the uterine lumen. Uterine involution, as determined by the decreasing diameter of the previously gravid uterine horn, was associated with a decrease in the concentrations of alpha1-acid glycoprotein (P < 0.005), haptoglobin (P < 0.05) and ceruloplasmin (P < 0.01). However, the response of the acute phase proteins to bacterial contamination was independent of the day on which the samples were collected, indicating that their concentrations were increased by bacterial contamination in addition to the changes associated with uterine involution.

Abstract
The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) on lactating bovine mammary functions such as milk protein secretion and the integrity of the milk-blood barrier. The effect on the induction of the systemic inflammatory response was also examined using concentrations of serum haptoglobin (Hp), a major inflammatory acute-phase protein, as an index. One hundred micrograms per mammary gland of recombinant bovine (rBo) TNF-alpha or placebo saline was individually infused into a rear mammary gland of each of four lactating cows, and milk and blood samples were collected before and 4, 8, 24, 32, 48, 96 and 168 h after infusion. In the rBoTNF-alpha-infused gland, increases of somatic cell counts were observed at 4-48 h. Although concentrations of total milk protein were not changed, compositions of milk proteins varied following rBoTNF-alpha infusion. Concentrations of caseins, alpha-lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin were significantly decreased at 4 and 8 h. Lactoferrin concentrations were significantly increased at 4 h. Significant infiltrations of serum albumin, immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) and IgG2 were observed at 4 and 8 h. Elevations of the serum concentration of Hp were detected at 8-32 h, but were very small in comparison with those reported in inflammatory diseases. Changes in rectal temperature and white blood cell counts were not significant. These results show that single rBoTNF-alpha infusion into the lactating mammary gland suppresses the lactogenic function of the gland and influences the function of the milk-blood barrier, with little effect on the generalized inflammatory response.

Abstract
Experimental models of Salmonella -induced gastroenteritis have previously relied on crude subjective clinical markers of infection to assess disease severity. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility that changes in serum levels of the acute phase protein, haptoglobin, may be used as an objective, quantitative measurement of infection. Eight 3- to 4-week-old animals were challenged with a mixture of three Salmonella serotypes containing 6 x 10(10)bacteria and compared with five animals given a placebo preparation. Animals were monitored and characteristic clinical symptoms of infection; diarrhoeal scores, morbidity scores and rectal temperature, were recorded. Serum samples, from both animal groups, taken prior to challenge and again on days 1, 3, and 5 post-challenge, were analysed for haptoglobin levels using a direct serum binding assay. Prior to challenge, all 13 animals had normal levels of haptoglobin in their serum. By day 3 post-challenge six of eight animals challenged with Salmonella had abnormal serum haptoglobin levels (median level = 212 microg ml(-1)), while haptoglobin levels remained normal in placebo-challenged animals (median level = 0 microg ml(-1)). The change in haptoglobin levels during the 5-day observation period was statistically significant in the Salmonella -challenged animals (P = 0.0003, H = 16.477). Serum haptoglobin levels showed a statistical correlation with clinical measures of disease severity; diarrhoeal scores (P = 0.0015, H =8. 988), morbidity scores (P = 0.0004, H = 15.711) and rectal temperature (P = 0.0001, Z = 4.304). Thus, serum haptoglobin levels closely reflect the clinical symptoms of infection and are therefore a useful marker of infection severity in salmonellosis in calves.

Abstract
The acute-phase expression of pig MAP (major acute-phase protein)/ITIH4 (inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 4) and haptoglobin were analysed in primary cultures of isolated pig hepatocytes in response to recombinant human (rh) cytokines: tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), as well as to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Analysis of pig MAP/ITIH4 and haptoglobin mRNAs was carried out by RT-PCR amplification. Secreted proteins from the cytokine-treated hepatocytes were quantified by immunochemical techniques. Time-course and dose-response experiments show that pig MAP/ITIH4 and haptoglobin belong to the type II acute-phase proteins, as they are specifically induced by rhIL-6 and not by rhTNF-alpha or rhIL-1. Stimulation of cultured pig hepatocytes with rhIL-6 for 48 h at doses of 1000 U.mL-1 showed a fourfold to fivefold increase in pig MAP/ITIH4 concentration in the medium, while the concentration of haptoglobin only increased twofold. A similar increase in the concentration of pig MAP/ITIH4 was also observed in media of LPS-treated hepatocytes with the simultaneous generation of IL-6 by the Kupffer cells present in the cultures. Albumin secretion decreased after stimulation with doses of 100 or 1000 U.mL-1 rhTNF-alpha, rhIL-1 or rhIL-6. Therefore, it can be concluded that pig MAP/ITIH4 behaves as a major acute-phase protein produced by porcine hepatocytes under the effect of inflammatory cytokines.

Abstract
The rate of uterine involution postpartum was monitored in 13 suckling mule ewes by using radio-opaque markers and radiography, and each ewe was also monitored for intrauterine bacterial contamination during the first week, using a sterile guarded swab. Peripheral plasma or serum concentrations of haptoglobin, seromucoid, ceruloplasmin and 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM) were measured up to six weeks postpartum. The maximum reduction in the length of the uterine body and in the diameters of the horns occurred by 28 days postpartum, except in one ewe in which the size of the uterus continued to decrease for 42 days. Four ewes were positive for intrauterine bacterial contamination; Escherichia coli, clostridial species, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus uberis and Enterococcus species were isolated in pure or mixed culture. The presence of intrauterine bacteria did not affect the time for the completion of uterine involution. No bacteria were isolated from the ewe in which involution was delayed, but it had a different acute phase protein response and was therefore excluded from further analyses. In the remaining 12 ewes the mean postpartum haptoglobin response increased, with peak concentrations occurring on day 1, and decreased slowly as uterine involution progressed, but the four contaminated ewes had a significantly greater response. There was no difference between the prepartum and postpartum concentrations of seromucoid in the eight sterile ewes, but significant increases were observed in the contaminated group; the concentrations of ceruloplasmin did not vary in either group. The concentrations of PGFM were higher during the early postpartum period in the ewes with contaminated uteri.

Abstract
In addition to the lipoprotein-deficient d > 1.25 fraction, haptoglobin was detected in the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and the very high-density lipoprotein (VHDL) fractions from sera of calves with experimental pneumonia and cows with naturally occurring fatty liver. It was not found in the chylomicrons, very low-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein fractions. Washing of the HDL fraction did not decrease the haptoglobin concentration. Transferrin and immunoglobulin G were immunoblotted to examine the possibility of contamination of the lipoprotein fractions by the d > 1.25 fraction. The two serum proteins were detected only in the d > 1.25 fraction, not in any lipoprotein fractions. The distribution pattern of haptoglobin in the lipoprotein fractions was distinct from that of serum albumin. Concentrations of haptoglobin in the HDL fractions from pneumonic sera were largely proportional to those in whole sera. Cholesteryl ester concentrations were decreased in sera from calves with pneumonia, as in cows with fatty liver. A protein immunologically related to hemoglobin was also detected in particular in the VHDL fractions from sera of both groups. These results suggest that haptoglobin or a complex with the hemoglobin-like protein may have a role or roles related to the lipid metabolism.

Abstract
Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) is a major pro-inflammatory cytokine inducing the synthesis and release of many inflammatory mediators. It is involved in immune regulation, autoimmune diseases, and inflammation. Our previous study demonstrated that acanthoic acid, (-)-pimara-9(11), 15-dien-19-oic acid, a pimaradiene diterpene isolated from Acanthopanax koreanum, inhibited TNF-alpha production. To extend our understanding of inhibitory effects of acanthoic acid on TNF-alpha production, its effects on TNF-alpha gene expression was tested. Based on the results from RT-PCR and promoter analysis of TNF-alpha, it was found that acanthoic acid suppressed TNF-alpha gene expression. But the same concentration of acanthoic acid had no effect on IL-6 gene expression. Haptoglobin is an acute phase protein which is induced by TNF-alpha. When liver cells were treated with acanthoic acid, haptoglobin synthesis was blocked by acanthoic acid. These data confirmed that acanthoic acid inhibited gene expression and biological function of TNF-alpha.
