Abstract
BACKGROUND Marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) is an indolent non-Hodgkin B cell lymphoma with various architectural pattern including perifollicular, follicular colonization, nodular, micronodular, and diffuse patterns. A sclerotic variant has not been previously reported and represents a diagnostic pitfall. CASE SUMMARY A 66-year-old male developed left upper extremity swelling. Chest computed tomography (CT) in September 2020 showed 14 cm mass in left axilla. Needle core biopsy of axillary lymph node showed sclerotic tissue with atypical B lymphoid infiltrate but was non-diagnostic. Excisional biopsy was performed for diagnosis and showed extensive fibrosis and minor component of infiltrating B cells. Flow cytometry showed a small population of CD5-, CD10-, kappa restricted B cells. Monoclonal immunoglobulin heavy chain and light chain gene rearrangement were identified. Upon being diagnosed with MZL, patient was treated with rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone and achieved complete remission by positron emission tomography/CT. CONCLUSION This is an important case report because by morphology this case could have easily been overlooked as non-specific fibrosis with chronic inflammation representing a significant diagnostic pitfall. Moreover, this constitutes a new architectural pattern. While sclerotic lymphomas have rarely been described (often misdiagnosed as retroperitoneal fibrosis), we do not know of any cases describing this architectural presentation of MZL.

Abstract
Objectives:
The diagnosis of lymphoma on cytologic preparations and core needle biopsies (CNBs) is often challenging due to limited material that precludes additional ancillary testing for accurate classification. We describe our institutional experience with patients who ultimately received a diagnosis of lymphoma using cytologic preparations and CNB material along with additional ancillary testing.
Material and Methods:
All patients whose cytology material (fluids, cytologic smears, and cell block) and CNB resulted in a diagnosis of lymphoma, atypical lymphoid population, or suspicious for lymphoma were retrieved. Diagnoses of lymphoma followed the established nomenclatures of the World Health Organization (WHO). For all cases, the ancillary test profiles were captured and summarized.
Results:
Of 389 cases identified, 17 (4.4%) were diagnosed as atypical lymphoid cells and 31 (7.9%) were suspicious for lymphoma resulting in an indeterminate rate of 12.3%. The rest of the malignant cases (341; 87.7%) were classified using 2017 WHO lymphoid classification system. Six low-grade and 26 high-grade B-cell lymphomas were not further classified because of limited tissue. B-cell lymphomas were the largest category (73.0%): Primarily diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (21.4%), followed by follicular lymphoma (17.5%) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (10.9%). A total of 140 cases (36.0%) had flow cytometry results, but 30 specimens (21.4%) were insufficient. Cytogenetic and molecular studies were performed for 78 cases (20.0%).
Conclusion:
Full classification of lymphomas is possible with combined cytologic preparations and CNB material and it is an attractive first sampling modality in the diagnostic process for this disease group.

Abstract
Background T-cell/NK-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (T/NK-NHL) is an uncommon heterogeneous group of diseases. The current classification of T/NK-NHL is mainly based on histopathology and immunohistochemistry. In practice, however, the lack of unique histopathological patterns, overlapping cytomorphology, immunophenotypic complexity, inadequate panels, and diverse clinical presentations pose a great challenge. Flow cytometric immunophenotyping (FCI) is a gold standard for the diagnosis, subtyping, and monitoring of many hematological neoplasms. However, studies emphasizing the role of FCI in the diagnosis and staging of T/NK-NHL in real-world practice are scarce. Methods We included T-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (T-NHL) patients evaluated for the diagnosis and/or staging of T/NK-NHL using FCI between 2014 and 2020. We studied the utility of FCI in the diagnosis and subtyping of T/NK-NHL and correlated the FCI findings with the results of histopathology/immunohistochemistry. For correlation purposes, patients were categorized under definitive diagnosis and subtyping, inadequate subtyping, inadequate diagnosis, and misdiagnosis based on the findings of each technique. Results A total of 232 patients were diagnosed with T/NK-NHL. FCI findings provided definitive diagnoses in 198 patients and subtyping in 187/198 (95.45%) patients. The correlation between FCI and histopathological/immunohistochemistry results (n = 150) demonstrated an agreement on the diagnosis and subtyping in 69/150 (46%) patients. Of the remaining cases, the diagnosis and subtyping were inadequate in 64/150 (42.7%), and 14/150 (9.33%) were misdiagnosed on histopathology/immunohistochemistry results. FCI provided definitive diagnosis and subtyping in 51/64 (79.7%) patients. Among these, 13 patients diagnosed with peripheral T-cell lymphoma not-otherwise-specified were reclassified (angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL)-11 and prolymphocytic leukemia-2) on FCI. It corrected the diagnosis in 14 patients that were misdiagnosed (6 B-cell NHL (B-NHL), 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma, 1 acute leukemia, and 1 subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma) and misclassified (3 T-NHL) on histopathological results. AITL was the commonest T-NHL misclassified on histopathological results. FCI also confirmed the definite involvement in 7/83 (8.4%) and 27/83 (32.5%) bone marrow (BM) samples reported as suspicious and uninvolved, respectively, on histopathological evaluation. Conclusion AITL was the most frequently diagnosed T/NK-NHL in this study. FCI provided a distinct advantage in detecting BM involvement by T/NK-NHL, especially in patients with low-level involvement. Overall, our study concluded that FCI plays a critical role in the diagnosis, subtyping, and staging of T/NK-NHL in real-world practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a reliable technique that has been used for many years in lymphadenopathy diagnosis. Although conventional smear is the standard approach in FNAC, liquid-based cytology (LBC) is accepted as an alternative method. Reporting standardization is a significant gap in fine-needle aspiration cytology, leading to failure in pathologist-clinician dialog and interobserver variability. In 2020, an expert panel proposed the Sydney system for classifying and reporting lymph node aspiration cytology. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of LBC in lymph node aspiration cytology under the guidance of the Sydney system. METHODS Five hundred-four LBC samples were reevaluated and classified according to the Sydney system. Of these, n = 24 were categorized as L1-inadequate/non-diagnostic, n = 283 as L2-benign, n = 36 as L3- atypical cells of undetermined significance/atypical lymphoid cells of uncertain significance (AUS/ALUS), n = 48 as L4-suspicious, and n = 113 as L5-malignant. Four hundred-one samples were histopathologically confirmed. The diagnostic accuracy of LBC and the risk of malignancy for each Sydney category were calculated. RESULTS The results were as follows: sensitivity 98.97%; specificity 98.60%; positive predictive value 94.80%; negative predictive value 99.29%; and overall diagnostic accuracy 98.75%. The ROM was 16.6% for L1, 0.7% for L2, 88.8% for L3, and 100% for L4 and L5. CONCLUSION LBC is suitable for use in lymph node aspiration under the guidance of the Sydney system and has high diagnostic accuracy. Future comprehensive studies will increase the applicability of the Sydney system and minimize interobserver variability.

Yield of flow cytometry in addition to cytology for lymph node sampling in patients with incidental axillary adenopathy without a concurrent diagnosis of primary breast malignancy. Abstract
PURPOSE Non-specific lymphadenopathy is increasingly being reported especially given the COVID-19 vaccination campaign and is a diagnostic dilemma especially in oncology patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and discordance rate between fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology and flow cytometry (FC) immunophenotyping in axillary FNA in patients with morphologically abnormal axillary lymph nodes on imaging and no concurrent diagnosis of primary breast malignancy. METHODS This retrospective study included 222 patients who underwent screening or diagnostic axillary ultrasound that yielded suspicious lymphadenopathy without concurrent or recent prior diagnosis of breast cancer and who had subsequent image-guided axillary FNA and FC. Diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive value (PPV and NPV) were reported for FNA with cytology alone, and FC alone, and in combination. Discordance rate between FNA cytology and FC was assessed. Discordant cases were evaluated with histology or clinical and imaging follow-up. RESULTS Diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and diagnostic accuracy were 88%, 92%, 77%, 96%, and 91%, for FNA alone, 98%, 98%, 92%, 99%, and 98% for FC alone, and 100%, 92%, 79%, 100%, and 94% when combined. The overall discordance rate between FNA and FC was 7% (16/222). 7/16 (44%) patients with discordant results were diagnosed with lymphoma, while 9/16 (56%) patients with discordant results had benign findings. CONCLUSION With a diagnostic accuracy of 91%, FNA with cytology is sufficient to screen patients with indeterminate and incidental lymphadenopathy. Flow cytometry could be initially deferred in patients with low pretest probability of lymphoma.

Abstract
CONTEXT.— Nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL) is characterized by neoplastic lymphocyte-predominant cells frequently rimmed by CD3+/CD57+/programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1)+ T cells. Because of the rarity of lymphocyte-predominant cells in most cases, flow cytometric studies on NLPHL often fail to show evidence of malignancy. OBJECTIVE.— To evaluate the diagnostic utility of PD-1 in detecting NLPHL by flow cytometry, in conjunction with the CD4:CD8 ratio and the percentage of T cells doubly positive for CD4 and CD8. DESIGN.— Flow cytometric data obtained from cases of NLPHL (n = 10), classical Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 20), B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 22), T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 5), benign lymphoid lesions (n = 20), angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphomas (n = 6) and T-cell/histiocyte-rich large B-cell lymphomas (n = 2) were analyzed and compared. RESULTS.— Compared with the other groups, NLPHL showed significantly higher values in the following parameters: CD4:CD8 ratio, percentage of T cells doubly positive for CD4 and CD8, percentage of PD-1-positive T cells, and median fluorescence intensity of PD-1 expression in the doubly positive for CD4 and CD8 subset. Using a scoring system (0-4) based on arbitrary cutoffs for these 4 parameters, all 10 NLPHL cases scored 3 or higher, as compared with only 3 cases from the other groups, producing an overall sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 96% (72 of 75). Two of the 3 outliers were non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and both showed definitive immunophenotypic abnormalities leading to the correct diagnosis. The remaining outlier was a case of T-cell/histiocyte-rich large B-cell lymphoma. CONCLUSIONS.— The inclusion of anti-PD-1 in flow cytometry is useful for detecting NLPHL in fresh tissue samples, most of which would have otherwise been labeled as nondiagnostic or reactive lymphoid processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is a safe and effective technique in the diagnosis of mediastinal and abdominal masses. However, the usefulness of EUS-FNA in the diagnosis and classification of lymphomas is controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the yield of EUS-FNA in the diagnosis and classification of lymphomas. METHODS a retrospective case series was performed in a tertiary referral center. All consecutive patients referred for EUS-FNA with a suspected diagnosis of lymphoma from March 2013 to June 2019 were included. RESULTS thirty-five patients (54.3 % women, median age 72 years) were included. The most frequent location of the node was the abdomen (67.9 %). Nodes were punctured using a 22-gauge (85.7 %) and 19-gauge needle (14.3 %) with a slow-pull technique. The number of passes performed were three or more in 82.9 % of patients. The samples were processed by the cellblock method. Adequate samples for immunohistochemical and molecular biological study were obtained in 33 (94.3 %) patients. EUS-FNA correctly diagnosed lymphoma in 30 out of 35 patients (85.7 %), and subclassification was determined in 23 patients (65.7 %). The most frequent diagnosis was non-Hodgkin lymphoma (85.7 %). There was one moderate adverse event (bleeding), which was resolved during the procedure. CONCLUSIONS EUS-FNA may be a valuable technique in the evaluation of suspected lymphomas with an adequate diagnostic yield and a very low rate of adverse events.

Abstract
At the time of intraoperative consultation, cytologic preparations including smears and imprints can be used in combination with frozen sections to increase diagnostic yield; however, these simple and rapid techniques are not adopted by all pathologists and their use varies considerably between institutions. In patients under investigation for suspected lymphoma, optimal triaging of tissue received fresh in pathology for lymphoma workup is paramount to maximize the odds of obtaining an accurate and clinically meaningful diagnosis and to avoid the need for additional procedures and delays in management, particularly in the current context in which core biopsies have become common practice as a first attempt to attain this goal. Imprint cytology is invaluable in this regard, also as these patients may not have a lymphoma but rather one of its clinical mimics. Herein, imprint cytology is used to approach fresh specimens received intraoperatively for lymphoma workup. More specifically, how these specimens are triaged for ancillary studies, such as flow cytometry, florescence in situ hybridization, or molecular analyses based on an interpretation of the touch imprints, is described. Detailed imprint cytological findings of typical benign and malignant lymphoid and nonlymphoid lesions are discussed and illustrated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has become one of the most useful modalities for diagnosis and staging of lymphoma. However, diagnostic accuracy of this technique has been reported with varying results across several studies around the world. Hence, this meta-analysis was done to assess the accuracy of FNAC for lymphoma diagnosis. METHODS We conducted a systematic search for all studies reporting the diagnostic accuracy of FNAC for lymphoma in the databases of PubMed Central, MEDLINE, EMBASE, MEDLINE, SCOPUS and Cochrane library from inception till January 2021. Meta-analysis was performed using STATA software "midas" package. RESULTS Forty-seven studies with 7268 patients were included. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of FNAC for diagnosing lymphoma were 93% (95% CI, 90%-95%) and 97% (95% CI, 95%-98%), respectively. Likelihood ratio positive was 33.5 (95% CI, 18.5-60.7) and likelihood ratio negative was 0.07 (0.05-0.11) making the technique to occupy the left upper quadrant in LR scattergram indicating that FNAC can be used for confirmation and exclusion. There was significant heterogeneity with significant chi-square test and I2 statistic >75%. There was significant publication bias as per Deek's test and funnel plot. CONCLUSION To summarize, our study found that FNAC has a vital role as a diagnostic tool for lymphoma with higher sensitivity and specificity. Further studies assessing the accuracy of FNAC on specific types of lymphoma is required.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although the diagnostic utility of lymph node fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is well established in the evaluation of metastatic malignancy, its value in the diagnosis of lymphoma is more controversial; yet, there is a growing trend among practitioners towards less-invasive procedures such as FNA and core needle biopsy (CNB). The guidelines recently published by the American Society for Clinical Pathology/College of American Pathology (CAP) regarding the workup of lymphoma include recommendations on the value and limitations of FNA. MATERIALS AND METHODS We reviewed 1237 image-guided lymph node aspirates from 695 procedures (410 nodes from 360 ultrasound [US]-guided cases, 799 from 309 endobronchial ultrasound [EBUS], 25 from 23 endoscopic ultrasound [EUS], and 3 from 3 computed tomography [CT]). RESULTS The majority (40 of 46, 87%) of lymph nodes suspected of lymphomatous involvement were aspirated under ultrasound. Core needle biopsy [CNB] was obtained for 41 (89%) lymph nodes, including all 40 US specimens. Flow cytometry (FC) was performed on 37 (80%) aspirates; aspirates without FC were from patients who had a history of Hodgkin lymphoma, or showed granulomata or non-hematologic malignancy onsite. Thirty-one (67%) lymph nodes were sent for review by hematopathology. Forty-two (91%) lymph node FNA/CNB yielded actionable diagnoses. Seventeen of 241(7%) cases aspirated for other indications (14 US, 3 EBUS) were involved by a lymphoproliferative process. All were reviewed by hematopathology. All 14 US cases had FC and CNB. CONCLUSION Our institutional approach towards lymph node cytopathology for lymphoma workup appears to be in accordance with the new CAP guidelines, and demonstrates a potential triage and workflow model for lymph node FNA specimens that allows for accurate diagnosis in cases where lymphoma is a consideration.

Abstract
Lymphocyte-rich effusions of the body cavities may represent a reactive/benign condition, primary effusion lymphoma, or systemic lymphoma with secondary malignant effusion, either as initial presentation or as a late complication. Cytomorphologic examination is essential and fundamental for diagnosis and may provide important clues to the nature of diseases. However, based on morphology alone, cytologic diagnosis of lymphocyte-rich effusions could be very challenging, particularly when the lymphocytes are small. Cytologists/cytopathologists might be uncertain when a lymphocyte-rich effusion specimen warrants a comprehensive hematopathologic workup. Herein we present a simple and practical algorithmic approach. On the basis of the cytomorphology of lymphocytes (small vs. large cells), presence or absence of cellular atypia, and clinical information (an earlier history or current lymphoma), the lymphocyte-rich effusion samples could be triaged for ancillary studies including immunophenotyping and molecular assays if indicated. Incorporation of cytomorphology, correlation with clinical information, and appropriate application of various ancillary techniques is mandatory for a correct diagnosis of lymphocyte-rich effusion specimens.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to establish the liability of cytological diagnostic and, along with ancillary techniques, to sub-classify hematopoietic malignancies in serous effusions. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the serous effusions of hematopoietic malignancies over an 11-year period, along with ancillary studies, clinical and histological data. We compared cytological along with histological diagnosis to evaluate the value of cytology itself. Furthermore, the discrepant cases were reviewed. Results: In this study, a total of 242 cases were identified as hematopoietic malignancies. Ancillary technologies were performed: in 24 cases FCM, 242 cases ICC, 35 cases ISH, 81 cases PCR and 10 cases FISH. Cyto-histological correlation was available for 122 cases. The subtyping of hematopoietic malignancies was achieved using cytological material in 65/122 cases (53.3%). Of the 65 cases, T-Acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (22.1%) was the leading subtype, followed by Burkitt lymphoma (5.7%), plasmacytoma (5.7%). Cyto-histological correlation showed a 100% concordant rate of diagnosis for hematopoietic malignancies and a high degree of agreement on sub-classification (51.6%). In this regard, T-acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma, plasmacytoma, extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type, anaplastic large cell lymphoma, myeloid sarcoma, and follicular lymphoma showed the highest degree of agreement (100%). The sub-classification on cytology was achieved in 53 out of the remaining 120 cases without histological diagnosis (44.2%). T-acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (20.8%) was again the most frequently encountered subtype, followed by plasmacytoma (5.8%) and Burkitt lymphoma (4.2%). Conclusions: This large series study provided evidence that combining cytology and ancillary studies enabled the accurate serous effusions cytological diagnoses and subsequent sub-classification for the described malignancies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The evaluation of lymph nodes (LN) by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is routinely used in many institutions but it is not uniformly accepted mainly because of the lack of guidelines and a cytopathological diagnostic classification. A committee of cytopathologists has developed a system of performance, classification, and reporting for LN-FNAC. METHODS The committee members prepared a document that has circulated among them five times; the final text has been approved by all the participants. It is based on a review of the international literature and on the expertise of the members. The system integrates clinical and imaging data with cytopathological features and ancillary techniques. The project has received the endorsement and patronage of the International Academy of Cytology and the European Federation of the Cytology Societies. RESULTS Clinical, imaging, and serological data of lymphadenopathies, indications for LN-FNAC, technical procedures, and ancillary techniques are evaluated with specific recommendations. The reporting system includes two diagnostic levels. The first should provide basic diagnostic information and includes five categories: inadequate/insufficient, benign, atypical lymphoid cells of undetermined/uncertain significance, suspicious, and malignant. For each category, specific recommendations are provided. The second diagnostic level, when achievable, should produce the identification of specific benign or malignant entities and additional information by utilizing ancillary testing. CONCLUSION The authors believe that the introduction of this system for performing and reporting LN-FNAC may improve the quality of the procedure, the report, and the communication between cytopathologists and the clinicians. This system may lead to a greater acceptance and utilization of LN-FNAC and to a better interdisciplinary understanding of the results of this procedure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Use of fine-needle aspiration/needle core biopsy (FNA/CNB) in evaluating hematolymphoid processes has been debated. We investigate its applicability in various clinicopathologic settings. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 152 cases of FNA/CNB. RESULTS Of 152 FNA/CNBs, 124 (81.6%) resulted in diagnoses without excisional biopsies, while 28 required subsequent excisional biopsies. Of these, 43 FNA/CNBs performed for suspected lymphoma relapse demonstrated 95.4% diagnostic rate (41/43), which was significantly better than those without history of lymphoma (77/109, 71%; odds ratio [OR], 8.5; confidence interval, 1.9-37.4). Patients with immunodeficiency also showed a high rate of diagnosis by FNA/CNB (100%). When stratified by types of disease, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma/high-grade B-cell lymphoma demonstrated a higher success rate (92.7%) than small B-cell lymphoma (79.2%), though the difference was not statistically significant (OR, 3.3; P value = .07). A subsequent excisional biopsy was required in 28 cases, 23 of which resulted in diagnoses concordant with the FNA/CNB. Five cases showed diagnostic discordance, reflecting pitfalls of FNA/CNB in unusual cases with complex pathology. CONCLUSIONS FNA/CNB is practical in evaluating most hematolymphoid lesions, with high efficacy in recurrent disease and some primary neoplasms with homogeneous/ aggressive histology, or characteristic immunophenotype.

Abstract
The 2016 World Health Organisation revised classification of lymphoma has sub-classified well-defined entities and added a number of provisional entities on the basis of new knowledge on genetic, epigenetics and phenotypical data; prognostic and predictive features are also part of this classification. New knowledge on well-defined entities further enlightens the mechanisms of lymphomagenesis, which are more complex and multifactorial than once believed. Therapies are also more complex because traditional clinical trials have been integrated with new drugs and compounds with unique mechanisms of actions against distinct molecular targets. As lymphoma acquires additional genetic and phenotypic features over the time, pathological assessment is also necessary. Histological evaluation and tissue collection by surgical biopsies are necessary for phenotypical and molecular purposes; however, these are demanding procedures for both the patient and the health care system. At the same time, the choice of the best treatment for a specific entity, in different phases and different patients requires information that may not be available when the biopsy is performed. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is successfully used in lymph nodes (LNs) in combination with different ancillary techniques and might be used to assess the phenotypic and genetic profile of specific targets and to get key information for therapy, in different phases and stages of the disease, with the option to re-check the same target over time, without surgical excision. This brief review describes LN-FNAC diagnostic criteria, current therapies for lymphomas and the potential role of LN-FNAC in selecting non-Hodgkin lymphomas patients for specific targeted treatments.

Abstract
The cytologic evaluation of serous effusions may be challenging for a number of reasons. Distinction of benign, reactive conditions from malignancy represents the main focus when examining these specimens. The morphologic diagnosis of malignancy may be difficult due to the relative paucity of abnormal cells. In other situations, cellularity is not an issue, but the ability to confidently identify a second, foreign (i.e., tumor) population within a background mesothelial cells on the basis of cytomorphologic features alone may pose problems. Cases with definitive morphologic evidence of malignancy may require additional studies in order to determine the tumor subtype and, in the case of carcinoma, the primary site of origin. Cases in which a definitive and precise diagnosis of malignancy is made may be optimal candidates for further molecular testing in order to gain prognostic information and guide personal therapeutic decisions. Finally, while an inflammatory or infectious condition can be suggested on the basis of cellular components and associated background elements, the identification of causative agent(s) may be difficult without additional studies. In all of these situations, the use of ancillary studies and techniques is critical; their utility and appropriate application are the subject of this review.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is frequently utilized in the diagnostic workup of lymphadenopathy. We evaluated the correlation of cytopathology with flow cytometry and tissue biopsy results and assessed the prevalence of specific malignancies in young adults presenting with cervical lymphadenopathy. METHODS Database was searched for cervical lymph node FNA performed by a cytopathologist in patients aged 18-30 years from 2005 to 2017. RESULTS Cervical lymph node FNA was performed on 48 patients without prior history of malignancy. Nineteen patients had cytology results only, of which all were interpreted as benign reactive lymph node. None developed subsequent malignancies. The remaining 29 patients had cytology with flow cytometry and/or tissue biopsy results. A benign reactive cytology diagnosis was rendered in 18 (62%) cases, of which 11 had concordant diagnosis on flow cytometry, 2 had tissue biopsy, and 3 had both. Eleven (38%) patients had cytology results concerning for a hematologic malignancy, of which 7 were confirmed by flow cytometry and 3 by both flow cytometry and tissue biopsy. Cervical lymph node FNA has 94.1% sensitivity, 83.3% specificity, 88.9% positive predictive value, and 90.9% negative predictive value. The most common hematologic malignancy in our young adult population presenting with cervical lymphadenopathy was Hodgkin lymphoma. CONCLUSION FNA is a useful first-line diagnostic procedure for assessing cervical lymphadenopathy in young adults to allow for better triage of specimens for flow cytometry and/or tissue biopsy concerning for a hematologic malignancy and potentially avoid invasive excisional biopsy in a proportion of cases.

Abstract
Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) has a unique immunophenotype derived from immunohistochemistry (positive for CD15, CD30, and Pax-5; negative for CD3, CD20 in most cases, and CD45). The knowledge gained over recent years enables better diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of HL. Flow cytometry as a tool for the diagnosis of classic HL has not been useful in the past due to the difficulty in isolating Reed-Sternberg cells as they are admixed in a rich inflammatory background which consists mainly of T cells, B cells, eosinophils, histiocytes, and plasma cells. However, in the recent past, several studies have tried to identify Reed-Sternberg cells using flow cytometry on fine needle aspiration or tissue biopsy of lymph nodes to confirm or supplement immunohistochemistry staining in diagnosis. Newer and more sensitive tools such as flow cytometry can be used for diagnosis, technology that may have been difficult in the past for diagnosis of this lymphoma subtype. Using flow cytometry, diagnosis is faster and could lead to point-of-care technology especially where we have typical immunophenotype signatures. © 2018 International Clinical Cytometry Society.

Abstract
Background To assess the sensitivity, specificity and turnaround time of flow cytometric analysis on brain biopsies compared to histology plus immunohistochemistry analysis in tumors with clinical suspicion of lymphoma. Methods All brain biopsies performed between 2010 and 2015 at our institution and analyzed by both immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry were included in this retrospective study. Immunohistochemistry was considered the gold standard. Results In a total of 77 biopsies from 71 patients, 49 lymphomas were diagnosed by immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry results were concordant in 71 biopsies (92.2%). We found a specificity and sensitivity of flow cytometry of 100% and 87.8%, respectively. The time between the biopsy and reporting the result (turnaround time) was significantly shorter for flow cytometry, compared to immunohistochemistry (median: 1 vs. 5 days). Conclusions Flow cytometry has a high specificity and can confirm the diagnosis of a lymphoma significantly faster than immunohistochemistry. This allows for rapid initiation of treatment in this highly aggressive tumor. However, since its sensitivity is less than 100%, we recommend to perform histology plus immunohistochemistry in parallel to flow cytometry. © 2018 The Authors. Abstract
The identification of patients with aggressive cancer who require immediate therapy is a health challenge in low-income and middle-income countries. Limited pathology resources, high healthcare costs and large-case loads call for the development of advanced standalone diagnostics. Here, we report and validate an automated, low-cost point-of-care device for the molecular diagnosis of aggressive lymphomas. The device uses contrast-enhanced microholography and a deep-learning algorithm to directly analyse percutaneously obtained fine-needle aspirates. We show the feasibility and high accuracy of the device in cells, as well as the prospective validation of the results in 40 patients clinically referred for image-guided aspiration of nodal mass lesions suspicious for lymphoma. Automated analysis of human samples with the portable device should allow for the accurate classification of patients with benign and malignant adenopathy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We developed a simple and effective rinsing technique (RT) of needle biopsies to produce cell suspensions for flow cytometry (FCM) and evaluated whether the RT is comparable to the conventional tissue cell suspension (TCS) technique. METHODS We retrieved 93 needle core biopsy cases employing the RT for FCM and 25 needle biopsy cases using TCS for FCM. RESULTS The diagnostic concordance between the FCM results and the morphologic diagnoses of both groups was compared. The diagnostic concordance was comparable in the RT group (92.6%) to the TCS group (71.4%). Furthermore, the diagnostic concordance in the RT group was associated with number of isolated cells. The diagnostic accuracy increased significantly when the cell number was above 30,000 in the RT group. CONCLUSIONS The RT for FCM not only maximizes the tissue utilization, but also is a simple and effective method to obtain cell suspension as compared to traditional cell suspension technique. © 2018 International Clinical Cytometry Society.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) in diagnosing mediastinal and intra-abdominal lymphadenopathies. A total of 154 patients with mediastinal and intra-abdominal lymphadenopathies were included in this retrospective study between February 2010 and March 2015. Malignancy was suspected in the patients as a result of imaging findings and EUS-FNAs were performed to confirm the diagnoses. EUS and EUS-FNA data, as well as hospital medical records, were reviewed. The accuracy of EUS-FNA was 90.8% for diagnosing malignancy and 85.6% for diagnosing benign lymphadenopathy. In combination with flow cytometry (FCM), the accuracy of EUS-FNA to determine lymphoma was 94.2%. Among the malignant lymphadenopathy cases, 80 were caused by metastasis, 19 by lymphoma and 1 by myeloid leukemia. In the 53 benign cases, EUS-FNA revealed a nonspecific inflammatory condition in 27 patients, tuberculosis in 21 patients and Castleman's disease in 5 patients. The factors revealed to be associated with malignant lymphadenopathy included the sex and age of patients, as well as the location and size of the enlarged lymph node. In particular, celiac axis lymphadenopathy was associated with malignancy (23.0% of cases of malignancy, vs. 3.8% of benign lymphadenopathy). EUS-FNA results additionally suggested that the malignant lymph nodes observed in celiac axis were more likely to result from lymphoma (42.1%; 8/19 cases) than metastasis (18.8%; 15/80 cases; P=0.039). By contrast, malignant lymph nodes observed in the mediastinum were more likely to be caused by metastasis (47.5%; 38/80 cases) than lymphoma (10.5%; 2/19 cases; P=0.004). The results of the present study suggested that EUS-FNA is accurate for differentiating between malignancy and benign lymphadenopathy. Therefore, EUS-FNA in combination with FCM analysis, as a minimally invasive and highly sensitive tool, should be routinely performed for the identification of lymphoma. Additionally, examining the enlarged celiac axis lymph nodes of elderly males, who exhibit an increased risk of malignancy, may be beneficial.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Magnesium sulfate is used for preventing seizures in patients with severe preeclampsia. Previous studies have demonstrated that magnesium plays a significant role in the endothelial function and might have clinically beneficial vasodilating properties. OBJECTIVES This study is aimed at evaluating the effect of magnesium sulfate on the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) during the first 24 h after delivery and during the duration of recovery from hypertension in preeclampsia. METHODS Severe preeclamptic patients who had normal serum creatinine levels (0.4-0.8 mg/dL) were included in the study. Twenty-three women with severe preeclampsia were divided into groups of 9, 8, and 6, and given 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 g/h of magnesium sulfate, respectively. Magnesium sulfate infusion was used as seizure prophylaxis for 24 h after delivery. The cystatin C-based GFR was monitored for 24 h, and the blood pressure was recorded for 12 weeks postpartum. RESULTS Despite the minimal improvement of GFR 24-h after treatment initiation, survival analysis demonstrated a statistically significant relationship (log rank, p = 0.04) between magnesium dosage and recovery period from hypertension. The group receiving 2.0 g/h of magnesium experienced the shortest recovery period from hypertension (6.5 ± 1.8 days). Meanwhile, the other groups required 66.0 ± 26.9 and 48.3 ± 15.6 days to recover after 1.0 and 1.5 g/h of magnesium infusion, respectively. CONCLUSION Magnesium sulfate has no impact on GFR improvement during the first 24 h after delivery. However, magnesium maintenance infusion at 2.0 g/h is capable of preventing seizure by optimizing the therapeutic magnesium level (4.8-8.4 mg/dL) and shortening the hypertensive episode in preeclampsia.

Abstract
We present a multifunctional nanobiointerface for blood cell capture and phenotyping applications that features both excellent antifouling properties and high antibody activity. Multifunctionality is accomplished by modifying polymeric materials using self-assembled S-layer fusion-protein rSbpA/ZZ to immobilize high density antibodies at the two protein A binding sites of the rSbpA/ZZ nanolattice structure. Controlled orientation and alignment of the antibodies reduced antibody consumption 100-fold and increased cell capture efficiency 4-fold over standard methodologies. Cell analysis in complex samples was made possible by the remarkable antifouling properties of the rSbpA domain, while at the same time reducing unspecific binding and forgoing tedious blocking procedures. An automated microfluidic in situ cell analysis platform for isolation and phenotyping of primary peripheral blood mononuclear cells was developed as practical application. Results obtained using our automated microfluidic cell analysis platform showed that the multifunctional nanobiointerface can discriminate among T helper and cytotoxic T cells, and thymocytes. Additionally, on-chip cell capture under flow conditions using a high affinity CD 3 selective nanobiointerface preferentially isolated cells with strong surface marker expression. This means that our dynamic microfluidic cell purification method allows the enrichment of 773 CD 8 positive cytotoxic T cells out of a total blood cell population of 7728 PBMCs, which is an increase in cell enrichment of 8-fold with a purity of 85%.

Abstract
Significant advances have been made in the last few years in the technologies for sampling pancreatic masses, and in the understanding of the biology of pancreatic cancer. Better and more targeted treatments are likely to become available. Because most pancreatic cancers are likely to remain unresectable at diagnosis, high-quality, high-cellularity specimens are essential. A tailored approach that considers indication, location, and treatment possibilities needs to be taken before embarking on a pancreatic biopsy. Because the demand from oncologists and patients for increasingly personalized therapy is likely to grow, optimal sampling beyond diagnostic accuracy is likely to become increasingly critical.

Abstract
Ultrasonography (US) is a readily available non-invasive tool useful for the detection of musculoskeletal and soft tissue masses. Although X-Ray is often the first imaging study for evaluating both bone and soft tissue lesions, and magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography are mandatory in lesions staging, US is increasingly used for the early assessment of musculoskeletal and soft-tissue masses and for guiding procedures and biopsies. Surgical biopsy or fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is needed to ascertain the nature of any lesion. FNAB is a low cost technique, safer and less traumatic than an open surgical biopsy. Significant complications are rare, mostly related to the site of biopsy. Knowledge of indications, limitations, anatomical and pathological access, adequate technical expertise in US imaging and in intervention skills are the critical factors of the appropriate and safe use of FNAB. By now, the role of FNAB in musculoskeletal diseases is controversial and there is still a heated debate in the scientific community.

Abstract
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the new classification of lymphomas is mainly based on morphological, immunophenotypical, and molecular criteria. Consequently, this new approach has led from the substantial role that architecture played in the past to a secondary panel highlighting the role of fine-needle biopsy (FNB). Applied together with other ancillary techniques, such as flow cytometry (FC), FNB is a potential tool for the diagnosis of lymphomas, and enlarged lymph nodes represent an excellent target for the implementation of this technique. Despite the difficulties inherent in this technology, which might pose problems in differential diagnosis, in the majority of cases this joint work allows an accurate diagnosis of malignancy and even correct subcharacterization in routine lymphomas. Additionally, in selected cases, other molecular techniques like FISH and PCR can also be performed on FNB specimens, helping in the characterization and diagnosis of lymphomas. In this review, we discuss the basic aspects of the combination of FNB cytology and FC in the diagnosis and subclassification of lymphomas. The preanalytical phase is extensively discussed. The advantages, disadvantages, and technical limitations of this joint work are addressed in general and in terms of the accurate subclassification of lymphomas.

Abstract
In the last decades, lymph node fine-needle cytology (FNC), coupled with flow cytometry (FC), has gained a role in the diagnosis and classification of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The combination of FNC/FC allows the diagnosis and classification of NHL in lymph node samples with a high sensitivity and specificity by combining cytological features and specific phenotypic profiles. The present review provides a brief technical description of FC and a detailed analysis of the current markers and their combinations (diagnostic algorithm) for the diagnosis and classification of NHL. The basic principles of clonality assessment, as well as the diagnostic strengths and weaknesses of the procedure, are reported. The current diagnostic algorithms for NHL classification are critically reviewed with a focus on specific problems related to single entities. Moreover, this review provides a detailed analysis of the different clinical contexts in which FNC/FC is performed and related implications. Future and further applications of FNC/FC for NHL are also discussed.

Abstract
The non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) are a heterogeneous family of lymphoid malignancies that are among the most common neoplasms of both dogs and humans. Owing to shared molecular, signaling, incidence, and pathologic features, there is a strong framework supporting the utilization of canine lymphoma as a comparative, large animal model of human NHL. In alignment with the biologic similarities, the current approach towards the diagnosis and classification of canine lymphoma is based upon the human World Health Organization guidelines. While this approach has contributed to an increasing appreciation of the potential biological scope of canine lymphoma, it has also become apparent that the most appropriate diagnostic philosophy must be multimodal, namely by requiring knowledge of microscopic, immunophenotypic, and clinical features before establishing a final disease diagnosis. This review seeks to illustrate the comparative similarities and differences in the diagnosis of canine lymphoma through the presentation of the microscopic and immunophenotypic features of its most common forms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cytomorphology alone is often insufficient for the diagnosis and subclassification of lymphomas, so flow cytometry (FC) may be used as an adjuvant test. METHODS Renal fine-needle aspirations (FNAs) performed from January 1993 to August 2014 were reviewed for FC data or a diagnosis of lymphoma. RESULTS A total of 586 renal FNAs were collected. Thirty-three cases (5.1%) had FC analysis. Lymphoma was diagnosed 35 times (6%), and FC was performed in 21 (60%) cases. Both cytomorphology and FC were consistent with lymphoma in 20 cases. Cytomorphology alone was diagnostic of lymphoma in 15 cases. In 28 cases, biopsy from the kidney or another site was diagnostic of lymphoma. One subsequent biopsy revealed that a kidney FNA, which showed no definitive morphologic or FC evidence of lymphoma, likely represented necrotic diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. CONCLUSION FC is a useful adjuvant diagnostic test for renal FNAs, particularly for subclassification and confirmation of the diagnosis when there is insufficient material for immunohistochemistry. FC should be interpreted with caution when a sample is limited or when there is suspicion of Hodgkin lymphoma, and further work-up is warranted when cytomorphology suggests lymphoma but FC is negative.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is an important factor in the survival of critically ill patients. The purpose of the present study was to assess the nutritional status of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) on the days of admission and discharge via a detailed nutritional assessment. METHODS Totally, 125 patients were followed up from admission to discharge at 8ICUs in Shiraz, Iran. The patients' nutritional status was assessed using subjective global assessment (SGA), anthropometric measurements, biochemical indices, and body composition indicators. Diet prescription and intake was also evaluated. RESULTS Malnutrition prevalence significantly increased on the day of discharge (58.62%) compared to the day of admission (28.8%) according to SGA (P<0.001). The patients' weight, mid-upper-arm circumference, mid-arm muscle circumference, triceps skinfold thickness, and calf circumference decreased significantly as well (P<0.001). Lean mass weight and body cell mass also decreased significantly (P<0.001). Biochemical indices showed no notable changes except for magnesium, which decreased significantly (P=0.013). A negative significant correlation was observed between malnutrition on discharge day and anthropometric measurements. Positive and significant correlations were observed between the number of days without enteral feeding, days delayed from ICU admission to the commencement of enteral feeding, and the length of ICU stay and malnutrition on discharge day. Energy and protein intakes were significantly less than the prescribed diet (26.26% and 26.48%, respectively). CONCLUSION Malnutrition on discharge day increased in the patients in the ICU according to SGA. Anthropometric measurements were better predictors of the nutritional outcome of our critically ill patients than were biochemical tests.

Abstract
CONTEXT The World Health Organization system for lymphoma classification relies on histologic findings from excisional biopsies. In contradistinction to expert guidelines, practitioners increasingly rely on fine-needle aspiration cytology and core needle biopsies rather than excisional biopsies to diagnose lymphomas. OBJECTIVE To determine a rate at which fine-needle aspiration cytology and core needle biopsies, combined with flow cytometry and/or genetic techniques, can provide a diagnosis sufficient for optimal medical management of lymphoma. DATA SOURCES The English-language literature on fine-needle aspiration cytology and core needle biopsies for lymphoma was reviewed to identify studies that provided interpretations of all specimens regardless of whether these were deemed diagnostic. CONCLUSIONS Forty-two studies (1989-2012) specified the lymphoma subtypes for each diagnosis or indicated a rate at which the methods failed to provide a diagnosis. The median rate at which fine-needle aspiration cytology and core needle biopsies yielded a subtype-specific diagnosis of lymphoma was 74%. Strictly adhering to expert guidelines, which state that follicular lymphoma cannot be graded by these techniques, decreased the diagnostic yield further to 66%. Thus, 25% to 35% of fine-needle aspirates and/or core biopsies of nodes must be followed by an excisional lymph node biopsy to fully classify lymphoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is commonly used as a diagnostic tool for the evaluation of lymphoproliferative diseases. Cytomorphology alone is often insufficient for the diagnosis and subclassification of lymphoma; therefore, flow cytometry (FC) plays an important role in the characterization of lymphoproliferative disorders. This study reviews our experience with FC on liver FNA at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. METHODS 2,424 liver FNAs performed over a 21-year period were reviewed for clinical FC data (n=74) or a subsequent diagnosis of lymphoma in the liver without FC data (n=40). RESULTS In our study, 114 cases (4.7%) were included out of the 2,424 liver FNAs performed during the study period. Lymphoma was diagnosed 79 times. Cytomorphology alone was diagnostic of lymphoma in 45 cases, and in 33 cases both the cytomorphology and the FC were consistent with a diagnosis of lymphoma. Neither FC nor cytomorphology were diagnostic of lymphoma on 1 specimen. In 39 cases, FC had negative results on a lesion suspicious for lymphoma based on cytomorphology. In several nonlymphoma cases, FC provided information that allowed further subclassification of the neoplasm. CONCLUSION FC is a useful adjuvant diagnostic test for liver FNAs performed on patients with lymphoproliferative disorders.

Abstract
Background: Accurate diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) specimen is challenging and requires ancillary testing. Aim: The feasibility of flow cytometric immunophenotyping (FCI) along with cell block immunocytochemistry (CB-ICC) as adjunct techniques in the diagnosis of NHL as per the current World Health Organization (WHO) classification was evaluated. Materials and Methods: All cases of suspected lymphoma underwent FNA, and the sample was triaged for light microscopic evaluation, FCI, and CB-ICC, and each case was classified as per the current WHO classification. Results: A total of 65 cases was analyzed which included 40 B-cell, 21 T-cell, and 4 unclassifiable lymphomas. Of 61 cases, FCI alone was contributory in 74% (45/61) cases whereas CB-ICC alone was contributory in 65.5% (40/61) cases in typing the lymphoma. In 11.4% (7/61) cases, the lymphoma could not be classified by either technique. Thus, in a total of 88.5% (54/61) cases a combination of FCI and CB-ICC from FNA enabled a diagnosis of lymphoma with its subtyping. Conclusion: Flow cytometric immunophenotyping and ICC on CBs are feasible on FNA material and are very useful in a suspected case of NHL especially when a biopsy may not be possible or feasible.

Abstract
Accurate diagnosis and subtyping of lymphoma have important prognostic implications and are generally required for treatment planning. Histological assessment, immunophenotyping, and genetic studies are usually necessary. Endoscopic ultrasound guided-fine needle aspiration cytology (EUS-FNAC) is a minimally invasive technique widely used for the evaluation of deep-seated benign and malignant lesions. However, the value of cytological samples in lymphoma diagnosis is still a matter of debate. Endoscopic ultrasound guided-fine needle biopsy (EUS-FNAB) can provide tissue core samples that may help overcome the limitations of cytology. The aim of this review is to summarize the available literature regarding EUS-FNAC and EUS-FNAB for the diagnosis and subtyping of lymphoma. In addition, we discuss its usefulness in the management of primary extra-nodal lymphomas, as well as technical issues that may influence sample quality.

Abstract
RATIONALE The current management of lymphoma requires accurate diagnosis and subtyping of de novo lymphoma and of relapsed or refractory lymphoma in known cases. The role of endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) in the clinical management of lymphomas is unclear. OBJECTIVES To investigate the use of EBUS-TBNA in the diagnosis of de novo and relapsed mediastinal lymphomas. METHODS A total of 2,256 consecutive patients who underwent EBUS-TBNA in a tertiary center between February 2008 and April 2013 were prospectively evaluated. The diagnostic accuracy and clinical use of EBUS-TBNA in 100 cases of de novo or suspected relapsed mediastinal lymphoma was investigated by comparing EBUS-TBNA diagnosis with the final diagnosis. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS De novo mediastinal lymphoma was correctly diagnosed by EBUS-TBNA in 45 (88%) of 51 and relapsed lymphoma in 15 (100%) of 15 lymphoma cases. EBUS-TBNA accurately established a diagnosis other than lymphoma in 32 (97%) of 33 patients with suspected lymphoma relapse. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of EBUS-TBNA in the diagnosis of mediastinal lymphoma were 89%, 97%, 98%, 83%, and 91%, respectively. Sensitivity of EBUS-TBNA in subtyping lymphomas into high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma, low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and Hodgkin lymphoma was 90%, 100%, and 79%, respectively. EBUS-TBNA diagnosis was adequate for clinical management in 84 (84%) of 100 cases. CONCLUSIONS Multimodality evaluation of EBUS-TBNA can be successful in the diagnosis of de novo mediastinal lymphomas and is ideally suited in distinguishing lymphoma relapse from alternative pathologies; it is least sensitive in subtyping Hodgkin lymphoma.

Abstract
FNA is a simple, safe, and an inexpensive sampling technique that plays an important role in the evaluation of lymphadenopathy. The key to enhancing the accuracy of FNA diagnosis of lymphoma is the multi parameter approach in which the cytomorphologic features are evaluated in correlation with the results of ancillary studies and clinical context. A full understanding of the current lymphoma classification, clinical features associated with each lymphoma subtype and the impact of the diagnosis on patient management is essential in FNA diagnosis of lymphoma. It is also important to recognize the limitations of FNA in the primary diagnosis of some subtypes of lymphoma, and tissue biopsy should be recommended for a definitive diagnosis and subclassification in such cases.

Abstract
Lymphoma of the parotid gland is a relatively rare occurrence among head and neck tumors. Presentation is indistinguishable from other swellings of the parotid gland; therefore, it is important to consider lymphoma in the differential diagnosis when examining parotid swellings. Parotid lymphomas are most likely to be B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma of 1 of 3 types, which include follicular, marginal zone, and diffuse large B cell, although other histologic patterns have been described. We present a review of 3 patients with parotid lymphoma who presented to the University of Maryland Medical Center's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with facial swelling. Two patients were diagnosed with follicular lymphoma, whereas the third was diagnosed with marginal zone lymphoma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The field of cytopathology has been rapidly advancing in the era of molecular pathology and personalized medicine. On-site cytologic evaluation for adequacy and triaging specimens for small core biopsy or fine-needle aspiration (FNA) are often required. Cytopathologists face the challenge of how to best triage small specimens for diagnosis, molecular testing, and personalized treatment. Owing to its minimally invasive nature, FNA alone or combined with core biopsy for lymphoproliferative disorders and soft tissue tumors has gained popularity. METHODS Literature review and author's institutional experience are used for this review article. This article will focus mainly on lymphoproliferative disorders and soft tissue tumors. RESULTS Evaluation combining cytomorphology, immunohistochemistry, and/or molecular pathology is often needed to accurately diagnose and classify lymphomas and soft tissue tumors. Many molecular tests have been performed on cytologic specimens, such as tests for BRAF and RET in thyroid FNA. CONCLUSIONS Molecular pathology has been widely integrated into conventional cytopathology for diagnosing lymphoproliferative disorders and soft tissue tumors, and the diagnostic value of FNA on those tumors has increased significantly. Cytology will play a more important role in the era of personalized medicine.

Abstract
Flow cytometry with its rapidly increasing applications is being used essentially in all fields of diagnostic medicine. In hematological disorders it is most commonly used in diagnosis, characterization, prognostication and even selecting target therapy of acute leukemia and to some extent lymphomas. It is increasingly finding place in other fields of hematology i.e., non-malignant disorders of all blood cell types including RBCs and platelets along with leukocytes. In this review the authors have discussed some of these applications with an emphasis on disorders specific to pediatric patients.
