Absorption Intensities of Organic Molecules from Electronic Structure Calculations versus Experiments: the Effect of Solvation, Method, Basis Set, and Transition Moment Gauge

Recently, we derived experimental oscillator strengths (OSs) from well-defined UV-visible absorption spectral peaks of 100 molecules in solution. Here, we focus on a subset of transitions with the highest reliability to further benchmark the OSs from several wave function methods and density functionals. We consider multiple basis sets, transition moment gauges (length, velocity, and mixed), and solvent corrections. Most transitions in the comparison set come from conjugated molecules and have π → π* character. We use an automated algorithm to assign computed transitions to experimental bands. OSs computed using the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA), CIS, or EOM-CCSD exhibited a strong gauge dependence, which is diminished in linear response theories (TD-DFT, TD-HF, and to a smaller degree LR-CCSD). OSs calculated from TD-DFT with PCM solvent models are systematically larger than apparent OSs derived from experimental spectra. For example, fcomp from hybrid functionals and PCM have mean absolute errors that are ∼10% of n·fexp, where n is a solvent refractive index factor that arises from the energy flux of the radiation field in a dielectric (solvent). Theoretical cavity field corrections considering spherical cavities do not improve the agreement between computed and experimental data. Corrections that account for the molecular shape and the direction of transition dipole moments, or that explicitly account for the effect of solvent molecules on the local field, should be more appropriate.

Photosensitized Oxidation of Free and Peptide Tryptophan to N-Formylkynurenine

The oxidation of proteins and, in particular, of tryptophan (Trp) residues leads to chemical modifications that can affect the structure and function. The oxidative damage to proteins in photochemical processes is relevant in the skin and eyes and is related to a series of pathologies triggered by exposure to electromagnetic radiation. In this work, we studied the photosensitized formation of N-formylkynurenine (NFKyn) from Trp in different reaction systems. We used two substrates: free Trp and a peptide of nine amino acid residues, with Trp being the only oxidizable residue. Two different photosensitizers were employed: Rose Bengal (RB) and pterin (Ptr). The former is a typical type II photosensitizer [acts by producing singlet oxygen (1O2)]. Ptr is the parent compound of oxidized or aromatic pterins, natural photosensitizers that accumulate in human skin under certain pathological conditions and act mainly through type I mechanisms (generation of radicals). Experimental data were collected in steady photolysis, and the irradiated solutions were analyzed by chromatography (HPLC). Results indicate that the reaction of Trp with 1O2 initiates the process leading to NFKyn, but different competitive pathways take place depending on the photosensitizer and the substrate. In Ptr-photosensitization, a type I mechanism is involved in secondary reactions accelerating the formation of NFKyn when free Trp is the substrate.

Critical review of fluorescence and absorbance measurements as surrogates for the molecular weight and aromaticity of dissolved organic matter

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous in aquatic environments and challenging to characterize due to its heterogeneity. Optical measurements (i.e., absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy) are popular characterization tools, because they are non-destructive, require small sample volumes, and are relatively inexpensive and more accessible compared to other techniques (e.g., high resolution mass spectrometry). To make inferences about DOM chemistry, optical surrogates have been derived from absorbance and fluorescence spectra to describe differences in spectral shape (e.g., E2:E3 ratio, spectral slope, fluorescence indices) or quantify carbon-normalized optical responses (e.g., specific absorbance (SUVA) or specific fluorescence intensity (SFI)). The most common interpretations relate these optical surrogates to DOM molecular weight or aromaticity. This critical review traces the genesis of each of these interpretations and, to the extent possible, discusses additional lines of evidence that have been developed since their inception using datasets comparing diverse DOM sources or strategic endmembers. This review draws several conclusions. More caution is needed to avoid presenting surrogates as specific to either molecular weight or aromaticity, as these physicochemical characteristics are often correlated or interdependent. Many surrogates are proposed using narrow contexts, such as fractionation of a limited number of samples or dependence on isolates. Further study is needed to determine if interpretations are generalizable to whole-waters. Lastly, there is a broad opportunity to identify why endmembers with low abundance of aromatic carbon (e.g., effluent organic matter, Antarctic lakes) often do not follow systematic trends with molecular weight or aromaticity as observed in endmembers from terrestrial environments with higher plant inputs.

Controlling On-Surface Photoactivity: The Impact of π-Conjugation in Anhydride-Functionalized Molecules on a Semiconductor Surface

On-surface synthesis has become a prominent method for growing low-dimensional carbon-based nanomaterials on metal surfaces. However, the necessity of decoupling organic nanostructures from metal substrates to exploit their properties requires either transfer methods or new strategies to perform reactions directly on inert surfaces. The use of on-surface light-induced reactions directly on semiconductor/insulating surfaces represents an alternative approach to address these challenges. Here, exploring the photochemical activity of different organic molecules on a SnSe semiconductor surface under ultra-high vacuum, we present a novel on-surface light-induced reaction. The selective photodissociation of the anhydride group is observed, releasing CO and CO2. Moreover, we rationalize the relationship between the photochemical activity and the π-conjugation of the molecular core. The different experimental behaviour of two model anhydrides was elucidated by theoretical calculations, showing how the molecular structure influences the distribution of the excited states. Our findings open new pathways for on-surface synthesis directly on technologically relevant substrates.

How molecular architecture defines quantum yields

Understanding the intricate relationship between molecular architecture and function underpins most challenges at the forefront of chemical innovation. Bond-forming reactions are particularly influenced by the topology of a chemical structure, both on small molecule scale and in larger macromolecular frameworks. Herein, we elucidate the impact that molecular architecture has on the photo-induced cyclisations of a series of monodisperse macromolecules with defined spacers between photodimerisable moieties, and examine the relationship between propensity for intramolecular cyclisation and intermolecular network formation. We demonstrate a goldilocks zone of maximum reactivity between the sterically hindered and entropically limited regimes with a quantum yield of intramolecular cyclisation that is nearly an order of magnitude higher than the lowest value. As a result of the molecular design of trifunctional macromolecules, their quantum yields can be deconvoluted into the formation of two different cyclic isomers, as rationalised with molecular dynamics simulations. Critically, we visualise our solution-based studies with light-based additive manufacturing. We formulate four photoresists for microprinting, revealing that the precise positioning of functional groups is critical for resist performance, with lower intramolecular quantum yields leading to higher-quality printing in most cases.

Induced Chirality in Sulfasalazine by Complexation With Albumins: Theoretical and Experimental Study

Through molecular recognition, drugs can interact and complex with macromolecules circulating in the body. The serum albumin transport protein, found in several mammals, has several interaction sites where these molecules can be located. The drug sulfasalazine (SSZ) is known in the literature to complex at drug site 1 (DS1) in human serum (HSA) and bovine serum (BSA) proteins. This complexation can be studied using various spectroscopic techniques. With the techniques used in this work, absorption in the ultraviolet and visible regions (UV-Vis) and electronic circular dichroism (ECD), a significant difference was observed in the results involving HSA and BSA. The application of theoretical methodologies, such as TD-DFT and molecular docking, suggests that the conformation that SSZ assumes in DS1 of the two proteins is different, which exposes it to different amino acid residues and different hydrophobicities. This difference in conformation may be related to the location of DS1 where the drug interacts or to the possibility of SSZ moving in the BSA site, due to its larger size, and moving less freely in HSA.

Host-Guest Metal-Organic Frameworks-Based Long-Afterglow Luminescence Materials

Long-afterglow materials have a broad of applications in optoelectronic devices, sensors, medicine and other fields due to their excellent luminescent properties. The host-guest long-afterglow MOFs material combines the advantages of multi-component characteristics and the stability of MOFs, which improves its luminous performance and expands its other properties. This review introduces the classification, synthesis and application of host-guest MOFs materials with long afterglow. Due to their rigid frames and multi-channel characteristics, MOFs can load common guest materials including rare earth metals, organic dyes, carbon dots, etc. The synthesis methods of loading guest materials into MOFs include solvothermal synthesis, post-encapsulation, post-modification, etc. Those long-afterglow host-guest MOFs have a wide range of applications in the fields of sensors, information security and biological imaging.

Strong coupling in molecular systems: a simple predictor employing routine optical measurements

We provide a simple method that enables readily acquired experimental data to be used to predict whether or not a candidate molecular material may exhibit strong coupling. Specifically, we explore the relationship between the hybrid molecular/photonic (polaritonic) states and the bulk optical response of the molecular material. For a given material, this approach enables a prediction of the maximum extent of strong coupling (vacuum Rabi splitting), irrespective of the nature of the confined light field. We provide formulae for the upper limit of the splitting in terms of the molar absorption coefficient, the attenuation coefficient, the extinction coefficient (imaginary part of the refractive index) and the absorbance. To illustrate this approach, we provide a number of examples, and we also discuss some of the limitations of our approach.

Direct Determination of Absolute Radical Quantum Yields in Hydroxyl and Sulfate Radical-Based Treatment Processes

The absolute radical quantum yield (Φ ) is a critical parameter to evaluate the efficiency of radical-based processes in engineered water treatment. However, measuring Φ is fraught with challenges, as current quantification methods lack selectivity, specificity, and anti-interference capabilities, resulting in significant error propagation. Herein, we report a direct and reliable time-resolved technique to determine Φ at pH 7.0 for commonly used radical precursors in advanced oxidation processes. For H2O2 and peroxydisulfate (PDS), the values of Φ •OH and Φ SO 4 • - at 266 nm were measured to be 1.10 ± 0.01 and 1.46 ± 0.05, respectively. For peroxymonosulfate (PMS), we developed a new approach to determine Φ • OH PMS with terephthalic acid as a trap-and-trigger probe in the nonsteady state system. For the first time, the Φ • OH PMS value was measured to be 0.56 by the direct method, which is stoichiometrically equal to Φ SO 4 • - PMS (0.57 ± 0.02). Additionally, radical formation mechanisms were elucidated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The theoretical results showed that the highest occupied molecular orbitals of the radical precursors are O-O antibonding orbitals, facilitating the destabilization of the peroxy bond for radical formation. Electronic structures of these precursors were compared, aiming to rationalize the tendency of the Φ values we observed. Overall, this time-resolved technique with specific probes can be used as a reliable tool to determine Φ , serving as a scientific basis for the accurate performance evaluation of diverse radical-based treatment processes.

A new era of LMCT: leveraging ligand-to-metal charge transfer excited states for photochemical reactions

Ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) excited states are capable of undergoing a wide array of photochemical reactions, yet receive minimal attention compared to other charge transfer excited states. This work provides general criteria for designing transition metal complexes that exhibit low energy LMCT excited states and routes to drive photochemistry from these excited states. General design principles regarding metal identity, oxidation state, geometry, and ligand sets are summarized. Fundamental photoreactions from these states including visible light-induced homolysis, excited state electron transfer, and other photoinduced chemical transformations are discussed and key design principles for enabling these photochemical reactions are further highlighted. Guided by these fundamentals, this review outlines critical considerations for the future design and application of coordination complexes with LMCT excited states.

Carbon monoxide poisoning and phototherapy

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a leading cause of poison-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. By binding to hemoglobin and other heme-containing proteins, CO reduces oxygen delivery and produces tissue damage. Prompt treatment of CO-poisoned patients is necessary to prevent acute and long-term complications. Oxygen therapy is the only available treatment. Visible light has been shown to selectively dissociate CO from hemoglobin with high efficiency without affecting oxygen affinity. Pulmonary phototherapy has been shown to accelerate the rate of CO elimination in CO poisoned mice and rats when applied directly to the lungs or via intra-esophageal or intra-pleural optical fibers. The extracorporeal removal of CO using a membrane oxygenator with optimal characteristic for blood exposure to light has been shown to accelerate the rate of CO illumination in rats with or without lung injury and in pigs. The development of non-invasive techniques to apply pulmonary phototherapy and the development of a compact, highly efficient membrane oxygenator for the extracorporeal removal of CO in humans may provide a significant advance in the treatment of CO poisoning.

On photokinetics under polychromatic light

Since the dawn of photochemistry 150 years ago, photoreactions have been conducted under polychromatic light. However, despite the pivotal role that photokinetics should naturally play for such reactive photosystems, the literature lacks a comprehensive description of that area. Indeed, one fails to identify explicit model integrated rate laws for these reactions, a characteristic type for their kinetic behavior, or their kinetic order. In addition, there is no consensus in the community on standardized investigative tools to evaluate the reactivity of these photosystems, nor are there venues for the discussion of such photokinetic issues. The present work is a contribution addressing some of these knowledge gaps. It proposes an unprecedented general formula capable of mapping out the kinetic traces of photoreactions under polychromatic light irradiation. This article quantitatively discusses several reaction situations, including the effects of initial reactant concentration and the presence of spectator molecules. It also develops a methodology for standardizing actinometers and defines and describes both the spectral range of highest reactivity and the photonic yield. The validity of the model equation has been proven by comparing its results to both theoretical counterparts and those generated by fourth-order Runge-Kutta numerical calculations. For the first time, a confirmation of the Φ -order character of the kinetics under polychromatic light was established.

Two-Coordinate Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Coinage Metal Complexes: Molecular Design, Photophysical Characters, and Device Application

Since the emergence of the first green light emission from a fluorescent thin-film organic light emitting diode (OLED) in the mid-1980s, a global consumer market for OLED displays has flourished over the past few decades. This growth can primarily be attributed to the development of noble metal phosphorescent emitters that facilitated remarkable gains in electrical conversion efficiency, a broadened color gamut, and vibrant image quality for OLED displays. Despite these achievements, the limited abundance of noble metals in the Earth's crust has spurred ongoing efforts to discover cost-effective electroluminescent materials. One particularly promising avenue is the exploration of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), a mechanism with the potential to fully harness excitons in OLEDs. Recently, investigations have unveiled TADF in a series of two-coordinate coinage metal (Cu, Ag, and Au) complexes. These organometallic TADF materials exhibit distinctive behavior in comparison to their organic counterparts. They offer benefits such as tunable emissive colors, short TADF emission lifetimes, high luminescent quantum yields, and reasonable stability. Impressively, both vacuum-deposited and solution-processed OLEDs incorporating these materials have achieved outstanding performance. This review encompasses various facets on two-coordinate TADF coinage metal complexes, including molecular design, photophysical characterizations, elucidation of structure-property relationships, and OLED applications.

Numerical study of transient absorption saturation in single-layer graphene for optical nanoscopy applications

Transient absorption, or pump-probe microscopy is an absorption-based technique that can explore samples ultrafast dynamic properties and provide fluorescence-free contrast mechanisms. When applied to graphene and its derivatives, this technique exploits the graphene transient response caused by the ultrafast interband transition as the imaging contrast mechanism. The saturation of this transition is fundamental to allow for super-resolution optical far-field imaging, following the reversible saturable optical fluorescence transitions (RESOLFT) concept, although not involving fluorescence. With this aim, we propose a model to numerically compute the temporal evolution under saturation conditions of the single-layer graphene molecular states, which are involved in the transient absorption. Exploiting an algorithm based on the fourth order Runge-Kutta (RK4) method, and the density matrix approach, we numerically demonstrate that the transient absorption signal of single-layer graphene varies linearly as a function of excitation intensity until it reaches saturation. We experimentally verify this model using a custom pump-probe super-resolution microscope. The results define the intensities necessary to achieve super-resolution in a pump-probe nanoscope while studying graphene-based materials and open the possibility of predicting such a saturation process in other light-matter interactions that undergo the same transition.

An Exploration of Substituent Effects on the Photophysical Properties of Monobenzopentalenes

Monobenzopentalenes have received moderate attention compared to dibenzopentalenes, yet their accessibility as stable, non-symmetric structures with diverse substituents could be interesting for materials applications, including molecular photonics. Recently, monobenzopentalene was considered computationally as a potential chromophore for singlet fission (SF) photovoltaics. To advance this compound class towards photonics applications, the excited state energetics must be characterized, computationally and experimentally. In this report we synthesized a series of stable substituted monobenzopentalenes and provided the first experimental exploration of their photophysical properties. Structural and opto-electronic characterization revealed that all derivatives showed 1H NMR shifts in the olefinic region, bond length alternation in the pentalene unit, low-intensity absorptions reflecting the ground-state antiaromatic character and in turn the symmetry forbidden HOMO-to-LUMO transitions of ~2 eV and redox amphotericity. This was also supported by computed aromaticity indices (NICS, ACID, HOMA). Accordingly, substituents did not affect the fulfilment of the energetic criterion of SF, as the computed excited-state energy levels satisfied the required E(S1)/E(T1)>2 relationship. Further spectroscopic measurements revealed a concentration dependent quenching of the excited state and population of the S2 state on the nanosecond timescale, providing initial evidence for unusual photophysics and an alternative entry point for singlet fission with monobenzopentalenes.

Synthesis, characterization, and environmental applications of graphene-coated sand: A review

Global water quality has deteriorated, leaving over 844 million individuals without access to clean drinking water. While sand filters (SF) offer a solution, their limited surface area and adsorption capacity for emerging contaminants remain a challenge. This has prompted the development of new materials such as graphene-coated sand (GCS) to enhance the sand's adsorptive properties. Notably, GCS also possesses inherent anti-bacterial properties and can function as a photocatalyst when exposed to UV and visible light, offering enhanced water purification. This manuscript 1) reviews the synthesis of GCS, detailing the characterization techniques employed to understand its structure, composition, and multifunctional properties and 2) highlights the superior efficacy of GCS in removing contaminants, including metals (>95 % removal of Cd2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, and Cu2+ in low pH environment), sulfides (full removal compared to 26 % removal by raw sand), antibiotics (98 % removal of tetracycline), and bacteria (complete cell membrane destruction), compared to traditional SF. Due to its enhanced performance and multifaceted purification capabilities, GCS presents a promising alternative to SFs, especially in developing countries, aiming to improve water quality and ensure safe drinking water access. To the best of our knowledge, no other work groups the available research on GCS. Furthermore, future research directions should focus on reducing the overall production cost of GCS, exploring surface modification techniques, and expanding the range of contaminants tested by GCS, to fully realize its potential in water purification.

Synthesis of photo- and ionochromic N-acylated 2-(aminomethylene)benzo[b]thiophene-3(2Н)-ones with a terminal phenanthroline group

A series of novel photo- and ionochromic N-acylated 2-(aminomethylene)benzo[b]thiophene-3(2Н)-ones with a terminal phenanthroline receptor substituent was synthesized. Upon irradiation in acetonitrile or DMSO with light of 436 nm, they underwent Z-E isomerization of the C=C bond, followed by very fast N→O migration of the acyl group and the formation of nonemissive O-acylated isomers. These isomers were isolated preparatively and fully characterized by IR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy as well as HRMS and XRD methods. The reverse thermal reaction was catalyzed by protonic acids. N-Acylated compounds exclusively with Fe2+ formed nonfluorescent complexes with a contrast naked-eye effect: a color change of the solutions from yellow to dark orange. Subsequent selective interaction with AcO- led to the restoration of the initial absorption and emission properties. Thus, the obtained compounds represent dual-mode "on-off-on" switches of optical and fluorescent properties under sequential exposure to light and H+ or sequential addition of Fe2+ and AcO- ions.

Polymer Characterization by Size-Exclusion Chromatography with Multi-Angle Light Scattering (SEC-MALS): A Tutorial Review

This tutorial review presents the theory and application of SEC-MALS with minimal equations and a focus on synthetic polymer characterization, serving as an entry point for polymer scientists who want to learn more about SEC-MALS. We discuss the principles of static light scattering, outline its capability to generate absolute weight-average molar mass values, and extend its application to SEC-MALS. Practical elements are emphasized, enabling researchers to appreciate how values forM n , M w , and Đ are determined in an SEC-MALS experiment and how experimental conditions and input values, such as the specific refractive index increment ( d n / d c ), influence the results. Several illustrative SEC-MALS experiments demonstrate the impact of separation quality onM n (as opposed toM w ), the appearance of contaminants in SEC chromatograms from sample preparation, the influence of concentration on data quality, and how polymer topology affects molecular weight characterization in SEC. Finally, we address practical considerations, common issues, and persistent misconceptions.

From Visible to Near-Infrared Light-Triggered Photochromism: Negative Photochromism

Photochromic compounds, whose key molecular properties can be effectively modulated by light irradiation, have attracted significant attention for their potential applications in various research fields. The restriction of photoisomerization coloration induced by ultraviolet light limits their applications in the biomedical field and some other fields. Negative photochromism, wherein a relatively stable colored isomer transforms to a colorless metastable isomer under low-energy light irradiation, offers advantages in applications within materials science and life science. This review provides a summary of negatively photochromic compounds based on different molecular skeletons. Their corresponding design strategies and photochromic properties are presented to provide practical guidelines for future investigations. Negatively photochromic compounds can effectively expand the range of photochromic switches for future applications, offering unique properties such as responsiveness to visible to near-infrared light.

Tailoring flavin-based photosensitizers for efficient photooxidative coupling of benzylic amines

Photooxidative coupling of benzylic amines using naturally abundant O2 as an oxidant under visible light irradiation is an alternative green approach to synthesis imines and is of both fundamental and practical significance. We investigated the photophysical properties of flavin (FL) that is a naturally available sensitizer and its derivatives, i.e. 9-bromoflavin (MB-FL), 7,8-dibromoflavin (DB-FL) and 10-phenylflavin (Ph-FL), as well as the performance of these FL-based sensitizers (FLPSs) in the photooxidative coupling of benzylic amines to imines combining experimental and theoretical efforts. We showed that chemical functionalization with Br and phenyl effectively improves the photophysical properties of these FLPSs, in terms of absorption in the visible light range, singlet oxygen quantum yields, triplet lifetime, etc. Apart from nearly quantitative selectivity for the production of imines, the performance of DB-FL is superior to those of other FLPSs, and it is among the best photocatalysts for imine synthesis. Specifically, 0.5 mol% DB-FL is capable of converting 91% of 0.2 mmol benzylamine and more than 80% of 0.2 mmol fluorobenzylic amine derivatives into their corresponding imines in 5 h batch runs. Mechanistic investigation finely explained the observed photophysical properties of FLPSs and highlighted the dominant role of electron transfer in FLPS sensitized coupling of benzylic amines to imines. This work not only helps to understand the pathways for photocatalysis with FLPSs but also paves the way for the design of novel and efficient PSs to promote organic synthesis.

The magic of biaryl linkers: the electronic coupling through them defines the propensity for excited-state symmetry breaking in quadrupolar acceptor-donor-acceptor fluorophores

Charge transfer (CT) is key for molecular photonics, governing the optical properties of chromophores comprising electron-rich and electron-deficient components. In photoexcited dyes with an acceptor-donor-acceptor or donor-acceptor-donor architecture, CT breaks their quadrupolar symmetry and yields dipolar structures manifesting pronounced solvatochromism. Herein, we explore the effects of electronic coupling through biaryl linkers on the excited-state symmetry breaking of such hybrid dyes composed of an electron-rich core, i.e., 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole (DHPP), and pyrene substituents that can act as electron acceptors. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that strengthening the donor-acceptor electronic coupling decreases the CT rates and the propensity for symmetry breaking. We ascribe this unexpected result to effects of electronic coupling on the CT thermodynamics, which in its turn affects the CT kinetics. In cases of intermediate electronic coupling, the pyrene-DHPP conjugates produce fluorescence spectra, spreading over the whole visible range, that in addition to the broad CT emission, show bands from the radiative deactivation of the locally excited states of the donor and the acceptors. Because the radiative deactivation of the low-lying CT states is distinctly slow, fluorescence from upper locally excited states emerge leading to the observed anti-Kasha behaviour. As a result, these dyes exhibit white fluorescence. In addition to demonstrating the multifaceted nature of the effects of electronic coupling on CT dynamics, these chromophores can act as broad-band light sources with practical importance for imaging and photonics.

Substituent-Controlled Photophysical Responses in Dihydropyridine Derivatives and Their Application in the Detection of Volatile Organic Contaminants

In the ever-expanding realm of organic fluorophores, structurally simple and synthetically straightforward molecules with unique photophysical properties have received special attention. Among these, 1,4-dihydropyridine (DHP) is an important scaffold that permits fine-tuning of their photophysical properties through substituents on the periphery. Herein, we describe a series of solid-emissive N-substituted 2,6-dimethyl-4-methylene-1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives appended with electron-withdrawing substituents (dicyanomethylene or 2-dicyanomethylene-3-cyano-2,5-dihydrofuran) at the C-4 position and alkyl or alkylaryl groups on the DHP nitrogen. Electronic and steric tuning exerted by these substituents resulted in interesting photophysical properties such as negative solvatochromism, solidstate, and aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Theoretical calculations were carried out to explain the solvatochromic properties. Insight into the AIE properties was obtained through variable-temperature nuclear magnetic resonance and viscosity- and temperature-dependent emission studies. The variations in molecular packing in the crystal lattice with changes in the N-substituents contributed to the tuning of solid state emission properties. Detection of aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was achieved using the aggregates of the DHP derivatives. Among the VOCs, p-xylene elicited a significant enhancement in emission, allowing its detection at submicromolar levels.

Substituent Effects of Fluorescein on Photoredox Initiating Performance under Visible Light

We demonstrated the effects of substituents in fluorescein on the photoredox catalytic performance under visible light. For the systematic investigation, the phenyl ring of fluorescein was substituted with six different functional groups (i.e., amine, amide, isothiocyanate, aminomethyl, bromo, or nitro group) at the 5- or 6-position. The fluorescein derivatives were carefully characterized through photophysical and electrochemical analyses. The substituent effects were estimated by comparing the photopolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and N-vinylpyrrolidone (VP) in the presence of triethanolamine (TEOA) under aerobic conditions to that of intact fluorescein. As a result, the amine and nitro groups exhibited the lowest performances, presumably due to intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer (PET) promoted by the strong electron push-pull effect. The others, representative moderate or weak deactivators and activators, exhibited inferior performances than intact fluorescein, presumably owing to the more negative ΔGPET values, resulting in a decreased rate of intermolecular PET. These results are crucial for understanding the structure-performance relationship and the development of visible-light photoredox catalysts with improved performance and functionality.

Luminescence enhancement by deuterium

Created literally at the dawn of time, deuterium has been extremely valuable in so many chemistry roles. The subject of this review focuses on one deuterium application in particular: its enhancement of luminescence in many substances. After providing general overviews of both deuterium and luminescence, the early exploration of deuterium's effect on luminescence is described, followed by a number of specific topics. These sections include a discussion of deuterium-influenced luminescence for dyes, proteins, singlet oxygen, and the lanthanide elements, as well as anomalous inverse deuterium luminescence effects. Future directions for this important research topic are also proposed, as well as a summary conclusion.

On photokinetics under monochromatic light

The properties of photokinetics under monochromatic light have not yet been fully described in the literature. In addition, for the last 120 years or so, explicit, handy model equations that can map out the kinetic behaviour of photoreactions have been lacking. These gaps in the knowledge are addressed in the present paper. Several general features of such photokinetics were investigated, including the effects of initial reactant concentration, the presence of spectator molecules, and radiation intensity. A unique equation, standing for a pseudo-integrated rate law, capable of outlining the kinetic behaviour of any photoreaction is proposed. In addition, a method that solves for quantum yields and absorption coefficients of all species of a given photoreaction is detailed. A metric (the initial velocity) has been adopted, and its reliability for the quantification of several effects was proven by theoretical derivation, Runge-Kutta numerical integration calculations and through the model equation proposed. Overall, this study shows that, under monochromatic light, photoreaction kinetics is well described by Φ -order kinetics, which is embodied by a unifying model equation. This paper is aimed at contributing to rationalising photokinetics via reliable, easy-to-use mathematical tools.

Tools for overcoming reliance on energy-based measures in chemistry: a tutorial review

The vast majority of literature in the chemical sciences describes fundamental chemical and physical phenomena using scalar measures, such as the energy, even though many phenomena are beyond the scope of scalar-based considerations. This problem exists no matter how accurately the associated energies are calculated. The solution that is explained in this work is to remove the reliance on scalar quantum chemical measures and instead utilize the vector-based and full symmetry-breaking nature of next generation quantum theory of atoms in molecules (NG-QTAIM). The connection with experiment on neutral chiral molecules is explained. A selection of non-energy-based explanations are provided: the functioning of molecular devices, why the cis-effect is the exception rather than the rule, stereochemical phenomena including chiral discrimination, quantifying chiral character of formally achiral molecules, mixed S and R stereoisomer character and the effect of an applied electric field. Current and future developments along with suggestions for future avenues of investigation are discussed. This tutorial review provides the practical details required to implement NG-QTAIM for a range of phenomena that are not accessible with energy-based measures. Step-by-step worked examples are included with data sets and instructions for use of commercial and open-source software along with examples of how to interpret the results.

Heteroatom-Based Diradical(oid)s

Heteroatom-centered diradical(oid)s have been in the focus of molecular main group chemistry for nearly 30 years. During this time, the diradical concept has evolved and the focus has shifted to the rational design of diradical(oid)s for specific applications. This review article begins with some important theoretical considerations of the diradical and tetraradical concept. Based on these theoretical considerations, the design of diradical(oid)s in terms of ligand choice, steric, symmetry, electronic situation, element choice, and reactivity is highlighted with examples. In particular, heteroatom-centered diradical reactions are discussed and compared with closed-shell reactions such as pericyclic additions. The comparison between closed-shell reactivity, which proceeds in a concerted manner, and open-shell reactivity, which proceeds in a stepwise fashion, along with considerations of diradical(oid) design, provides a rational understanding of this interesting and unusual class of compounds. The application of diradical(oid)s, for example in small molecule activation or as molecular switches, is also highlighted. The final part of this review begins with application-related details of the spectroscopy of diradical(oid)s, followed by an update of the heteroatom-centered diradical(oid)s and tetraradical(oid)s published in the last 10 years since 2013.

Endogenous Photosensitizers in Human Skin

Endogenous photosensitizers play a critical role in both beneficial and harmful light-induced transformations in biological systems. Understanding their mode of action is essential for advancing fields such as photomedicine, photoredox catalysis, environmental science, and the development of sun care products. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of endogenous photosensitizers in human skin, investigating the connections between their electronic excitation and the subsequent activation or damage of organic biomolecules. We gather the physicochemical and photochemical properties of key endogenous photosensitizers and examine the relationships between their chemical reactivity, location within the skin, and the primary biochemical events following solar radiation exposure, along with their influence on skin physiology and pathology. An important take-home message of this review is that photosensitization allows visible light and UV-A radiation to have large effects on skin. The analysis presented here unveils potential causes for the continuous increase in global skin cancer cases and emphasizes the limitations of current sun protection approaches.

NIR-II Nanoprobes: A Review of Components-Based Approaches to Next-Generation Bioimaging Probes

Fluorescence and photoacoustic imaging techniques offer valuable insights into cell- and tissue-level processes. However, these optical imaging modalities are limited by scattering and absorption in tissue, resulting in the low-depth penetration of imaging. Contrast-enhanced imaging in the near-infrared window improves imaging penetration by taking advantage of reduced autofluorescence and scattering effects. Current contrast agents for fluorescence and photoacoustic imaging face several limitations from photostability and targeting specificity, highlighting the need for a novel imaging probe development. This review covers a broad range of near-infrared fluorescent and photoacoustic contrast agents, including organic dyes, polymers, and metallic nanostructures, focusing on their optical properties and applications in cellular and animal imaging. Similarly, we explore encapsulation and functionalization technologies toward building targeted, nanoscale imaging probes. Bioimaging applications such as angiography, tumor imaging, and the tracking of specific cell types are discussed. This review sheds light on recent advancements in fluorescent and photoacoustic nanoprobes in the near-infrared window. It serves as a valuable resource for researchers working in fields of biomedical imaging and nanotechnology, facilitating the development of innovative nanoprobes for improved diagnostic approaches in preclinical healthcare.

Living Cationic Ring-Opening Polymerization of Hetero Diels-Alder Adducts to Give Multifactor-Controlled and Fast-Photodegradable Vinyl Polymers

Precise control of multiple structural parameters associated with vinyl polymers is important for producing materials with the desired properties and functions. While the development of living polymerization methods has provided a way to control the various structural parameters of vinyl polymers, the concomitant control of their sequence and regioregularity remains a challenging task. To overcome this challenge, herein, we report the living cationic ring-opening polymerization of hetero Diels-Alder adducts. The scalable and modular synthesis of the cyclic monomers was achieved by a one-step protocol using readily available vinyl precursors. Subsequently, living polymerization of the cyclic monomers was examined, allowing the synthesis of vinyl polymers while controlling multiple factors, including molecular weight, dispersity, alternating sequence, head-to-head regioregularity, and end-group functionality. The living characteristics of the developed method were further demonstrated by block copolymerization. The synthesized vinyl polymers exhibited unique thermal properties and underwent fast photodegradation even under sunlight.

High-Performance Recognition, Cell-Imaging, and Efficient Removal of Carbon Monoxide toward a Palladium-Mediated Fluorescent Sensing Platform

Novel high-performance fluorescent approaches have always significant demand for room-temperature detection of carbon monoxide (CO), which is highly toxic even at low concentration levels and is not easy to recognize due to its colorless and odorless nature. In this paper, we constructed a palladium-mediated fluorescence turn-on sensing platform (TPANN-Pd) for the recognition of CO at room temperature, revealing simultaneously quick response speed (<30 s), excellent selectivity, superior sensitivity, and low detection limit (∼160 nM for CORM-3, ∼1.7 ppb for CO vapor). Moreover, rapid detection and efficient removal (24%) from the air by naked-eye vision has been successfully realized based on TPANN-Pd supramolecular gels. Furthermore, the developed sensing platform was elucidated with low cytotoxicity and high cellular uptake, and it was successfully applied to CO imaging in living cells, providing real-time monitoring of potential CO-involved reactions in biological systems.

Coherent Mixing of Singlet and Triplet States in Acrolein and Ketene: A Computational Strategy for Simulating the Electron-Nuclear Dynamics of Intersystem Crossing

We present a theoretical study of intersystem crossing (ISC) in acrolein and ketene with the Ehrenfest method that can describe a superposition of singlet and triplet states. Our simulations illustrate a new mechanistic effect of ISC, namely, that a superposition of singlets and triplets yields nonadiabatic dynamics characteristic of that superposition rather than the constituent state potential energy surfaces. This effect is particularly significant in ketene, where mixing of singlet and triplet states along the approach to a singlet/singlet conical intersection occurs, with the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) remaining small throughout. In both cases, the effects require many recrossings of the singlet/triplet state crossing seam, consistent with the textbook treatment of ISC.

Assessing the photodegradation potential of compounds derived from the photoinduced weathering of polystyrene in water

Benzoate (Bz^-) and acetophenone (AcPh) are aromatic compounds known to be produced by sunlight irradiation of polystyrene aqueous suspensions. Here we show that these molecules could react with ^•OH (Bz^-) and ^•OH + CO₃^•- (AcPh) in sunlit natural waters, while other photochemical processes (direct photolysis and reaction with singlet oxygen, or with the excited triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter) are unlikely to be important. Steady-state irradiation experiments were carried out using lamps, and the time evolution of the two substrates was monitored by liquid chromatography. Photodegradation kinetics in environmental waters were assessed by a photochemical model (APEX: Aqueous Photochemistry of Environmentally-occurring Xenobiotics). In the case of AcPh, a competitive process to aqueous-phase photodegradation would be volatilisation followed by reaction with gas-phase ^•OH. As far as Bz^- is concerned, elevated dissolved organic carbon (DOC) levels could be important in protecting this compound from aqueous-phase photodegradation. Limited reactivity of the studied compounds with the dibromide radical (Br₂^•-, studied by laser flash photolysis) suggests that ^•OH scavenging by bromide, which yields Br₂^•-, would be poorly offset by Br₂^•--induced degradation. Therefore, photodegradation kinetics of Bz^- and AcPh should be slower in seawater (containing [Br^-] ~ 1 mM) compared to freshwaters. The present findings suggest that photochemistry would play an important role in both formation and degradation of water-soluble organic compounds produced by weathering of plastic particles.

The photolytic conversion of 4-nonylphenol to 4-nonylcatechol within snowpack of the Palisade Glacier, Sierra Nevada, CA, USA

4-Nonylphenol (4-NP), an environmental pollutant with potent ecotoxicological effects, has been discovered in significant quantities in glacial ice and snow of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, CA. Photolysis of 4-NP is suspected to be a major, if not the sole, breakdown pathway in snow. However, the photolysis process has yet to be characterized in detail for this unique environment. This study therefore seeks to (1) confirm the presence of the major photolysis product within snowpack and snowmelt samples from the Palisade Glacier, CA, (2) determine key photolysis parameters through laboratory assays in snow analogs, and (3) compute environmentally relevant photolysis rates in snowpack via a spectral solar irradiance model parameterized for the Palisade Glacier. The primary photooxidation product of 4-NP, 4-nonylcatechol (4-NC), was synthesized and characterized by NMR and GC-MS for use as a reference standard in the detection of 4-NC in environmental samples. 4-NP was detected in all snowpack (n = 4) and snowmelt (n = 5) samples, with concentrations of 1.05 (± 0.11) μg L^-1 and 1.28 (± 0.12) μg L^-1, respectively. 4-NC was detected in all snowmelt outflow samples and all but one snow samples (88 % detection frequency) but was below the limit of quantification for the given method. All samples were collected during a sampling regime at the Palisade Glacier in August of 2021. Quantum yields of photolysis at the 277 nm absorption band were determined to be 0.36 (±0.06) and 0.21 (±0.06) in ultrapure water and liquid snow, respectively. Under clear sky conditions at the Palisade Glacier, half-lives for 4-NP are estimated to range from 235 to 251 h (9.8-10.5 days) based on assays conducted in liquid snowmelt and irradiance modeling. These results suggest that the photolysis of 4-NP, and hence the production of 4-NC, is occurring at significant rates within the snowpack where 4-NC is inevitably released to downstream catchment areas via snowmelt. 4-NC is significantly more toxic than its precursor, thereby raising amplified concerns for downstream human and wildlife populations. Furthermore, the ubiquity of 4-NP among the Earth's environments presents this as an issue of potentially global concern.

Phototransformation of Vanillin in Artificial Snow by Direct Photolysis and Mediated by Nitrite

The photodegradation of vanillin, as a proxy of methoxyphenols emitted by biomass burning, was investigated in artificial snow at 243 K and in liquid water at room temperature. Nitrite (NO₂^-) was used as a photosensitizer of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species under UVA light, because of its key photochemical role in snowpacks and atmospheric ice/waters. In snow and in the absence of NO₂^-, slow direct photolysis of vanillin was observed due to back-reactions taking place in the quasi-liquid layer at the ice-grain surface. The addition of NO₂^- made the photodegradation of vanillin faster, because of the important contribution of photoproduced reactive nitrogen species in vanillin phototransformation. These species triggered both nitration and oligomerization of vanillin in irradiated snow, as the identified vanillin by-products showed. Conversely, in liquid water, direct photolysis was the main photodegradation pathway of vanillin, even in the presence of NO₂^-, which had negligible effects on vanillin photodegradation. The results outline the different role of iced and liquid water in the photochemical fate of vanillin in different environmental compartments.

Global modeling of lake-water indirect photochemistry based on the equivalent monochromatic wavelength approximation: The case of the triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter

Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) plays key role as photosensitizer in sunlit surface-water environments, and it is deeply involved in the photodegradation of contaminants. It has recently been shown that sunlight absorption by CDOM can be conveniently approximated based on its monochromatic absorption at 560 nm. Here we show that such an approximation allows for the assessment of CDOM photoreactions on a wide global scale and, particularly, in the latitude belt between 60°S and 60°N. Global lake databases are currently incomplete as far as water chemistry is concerned, but estimates of the content of organic matter are available. With such data it is possible to assess global steady-state concentrations of CDOM triplet states (³CDOM*), which are predicted to reach particularly high values at Nordic latitudes during summer, due to a combination of high sunlight irradiance and elevated content of organic matter. For the first time to our knowledge, we are able to model an indirect photochemistry process in inland waters around the globe. Implications are discussed for the phototransformation of a contaminant that is mainly degraded by reaction with ³CDOM* (clofibric acid, lipid regulator metabolite), and for the formation of known products on a wide geographic scale.

Ratiometric Sensing of Glyphosate in Water Using Dual Fluorescent Carbon Dots

Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum pesticide used in crops and is found in many products used by industry and consumers. Unfortunately, glyphosate has been shown to have some toxicity toward many organisms found in our ecosystems and has been reported to have carcinogenic effects on humans. Hence, there is a need to develop novel nanosensors that are more sensitive and facile and permit rapid detection. Current optical-based assays are limited as they rely on changes in signal intensity, which can be affected by multiple factors in the sample. Herein, we report the development of a dual emissive carbon dot (CD) system that can be used to optically detect glyphosate pesticides in water at different pH levels. The fluorescent CDs emit blue and red fluorescence, which we exploit as a ratiometric self-referencing assay. We observe red fluorescence quenching with increasing concentrations of glyphosate in the solution, ascribed to the interaction of the glyphosate pesticide with the CD surface. The blue fluorescence remains unaffected and serves as a reference in this ratiometric approach. Using fluorescence quenching assays, a ratiometric response is observed in the ppm range with detection limits as low as 0.03 ppm. Our CDs can be used to detect other pesticides and contaminants in water, as cost-effective and simple environmental nanosensors.

A simple Norrish Type II actinometer for flow photoreactions

This contribution addresses a frequent problem in flow photochemistry, where methodologies to determine the quantum efficiency of photoreactions are totally lacking. In spite of numerous studies being available in the literature, product reaction yields are never accompanied by measurements to determine their quantum yields. Basically, the key reagent in the reaction, light, is not measured under the experimental conditions of exposure. We report here a flow actinometer based on the photochemistry of valerophenone that can be readily implemented in the organic laboratory for irradiations in the UV region. For example for UVB lamps used in our work, the irradiance was measured as 1.1 × 10^-4 einstein l^-1 s^-1. Our photoreactor design involves wrapping low-pressure lamps with Teflon tubbing, where the photochemistry takes place. Similar strategies could be implemented with other geometries or with lamps (e.g. LED) and actinometers with sensitivity in other spectral regions.

Solar-Driven Thermocatalytic Synthesis of Octahydroquinazolinone Using Novel Polyvinylchloride (PVC)-Supported Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3) Catalysts

The chemical industry is one of the main fossil fuel consumers, so its reliance on sustainable and renewable resources such as wind and solar energy should be increased to protect the environment. Accordingly, solar-driven thermocatalytic synthesis of octahydroquinazolinone using polyvinylchloride (PVC)-supported aluminum oxide (Al2O3) as a catalyst under natural sunlight is proposed in this work. The Al2O3/PVC catalysts were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, BET, XRD, and XPS techniques. The obtained results indicate that the yield and reaction time can be modified by adjusting the molar ratio of the catalyst. To investigate the stability of the catalyst, the spent catalyst was reused in several reactions. The results indicated that, when a 50% Al2O3 catalyst is employed in an absolute solar heat, it performs exceptionally well in terms of yield (98%) and reaction time (35 min). Furthermore, the reaction times and yield of octahydroquinazolinone derivatives with an aryl moiety were superior to those of heteroaryl. All the synthesized compounds were well characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR. The current work introduces a new strategy to use solar heat for energy-efficient chemical reactions using a cost-effective, recyclable environmentally friendly PVC/Al2O3 catalyst that produces a high yield.

Phototropin phosphorylation of ROOT PHOTOTROPISM 2 and its role in mediating phototropism, leaf positioning, and chloroplast accumulation movement in Arabidopsis

Directional movements impact the ability of plants to respond and adjust their growth accordingly to the prevailing light environment. The plasma-membrane associated protein, ROOT PHOTOTROPISM 2 (RPT2) is a key signalling component involved in chloroplast accumulation movement, leaf positioning, and phototropism, all of which are regulated redundantly by the ultraviolet/blue light-activated AGC kinases phototropin 1 and 2 (phot1 and phot2). We recently demonstrated that members of the NON-PHOTOTROPIC HYPOCOTYL 3 (NPH3)/RPT2-like (NRL) family in Arabidopsis thaliana, including RPT2, are directly phosphorylated by phot1. However, whether RPT2 is a substrate for phot2, and the biological significance of phot phosphorylation of RPT2 remains to be determined. Here, we show that RPT2 is phosphorylated by both phot1 and phot2 at a conserved serine residue (S591) within the C-terminal region of the protein. Blue light triggered the association of 14-3-3 proteins with RPT2 consistent with S591 acting as a 14-3-3 binding site. Mutation of S591 had no effect on the plasma membrane localization of RPT2 but reduced its functionality for leaf positioning and phototropism. Moreover, our findings indicate that S591 phosphorylation within the C-terminus of RPT2 is required for chloroplast accumulation movement to low level blue light. Taken together, these findings further highlight the importance of the C-terminal region of NRL proteins and how its phosphorylation contributes to phot receptor signalling in plants.

Photoinduced NO-release from polymer dots doped with an Ir(III) complex and N-methyl-N-nitroso-4-aminophenol

Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule that plays a variety of functions in the human body, but it is difficult to use it in biological experiments or for therapeutic purposes because of its high reactivity and instability in the biological milieu. Consequently, photocontrollable NO releasers, which enable spatiotemporal control of NO release, have an important role in elucidating the functions of NO. Our group has developed visible-light-controllable NO-releasing molecules that contain a fluorescent dye structure as a light-harvesting antenna moiety and an N-nitrosoaminophenol structure as an NO-releasing moiety. Here, we aimed to construct an NO-generating system employing an intermolecular photoredox reaction between the two separate components, since this would simplify chemical synthesis and make it easier to examine various dyes as antennae. For this purpose, we constructed polymer nanoparticles doped with both N-methyl-N-nitroso-4-aminophenol (NAP, 1) and an Ir(III) antenna complex (2, 3 or 4) in order to dissolve in aqueous solution without a co-solvent. These polymer nanoparticles released NO upon photoirradiation in vitro in the purple (400-430 nm) or blue (400-460 nm) wavelength region to activate the doped Ir(III) complex.

Photochemistry in IUPAC: the Committee (1976–2001) and the Sub-Committee (2001–)

The history of the IUPAC Photochemistry Committee since its creation in 1976 and its transition in 2001 to the IUPAC Photochemistry Sub-Committee are reviewed as well as the connections of Committee and Sub-Committee to the various photochemical associations (European Photochemical Association, EPA, Inter-American Photochemical Society, I-APS and Asian and Oceanian Photochemistry Association, APA). The participants in both the Commission and the Sub-Committee over the years are listed as well as the Recommendations and Technical Reports produced since the creation of the Committee until the present days.

Protective Effects of Halite to Vacuum and Vacuum-Ultraviolet Radiation: A Potential Scenario During a Young Sun Superflare

Halite (NaCl mineral) has exhibited the potential to preserve microorganisms for millions of years on Earth. This mineral was also identified on Mars and in meteorites. In this study, we investigated the potential of halite crystals to protect microbial life-forms on the surface of an airless body (e.g., meteorite), for instance, during a lithopanspermia process (interplanetary travel step) in the early Solar System. To investigate the effect of the radiation of the young Sun on microorganisms, we performed extensive simulation experiments by employing a synchrotron facility. We focused on two exposure conditions: vacuum (low Earth orbit, 10^-4 Pa) and vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) radiation (range 57.6-124 nm, flux 7.14 W/m²), with the latter representing an extreme scenario with high VUV fluxes comparable to the amount of radiation of a stellar superflare from the young Sun. The stellar VUV parameters were estimated by using the very well-studied solar analog of the young Sun, κ¹ Cet. To evaluate the protective effects of halite, we entrapped a halophilic archaeon (Haloferax volcanii) and a non-halophilic bacterium (Deinococcus radiodurans) in laboratory-grown halite. Control groups were cells entrapped in salt crystals (mixtures of different salts and NaCl) and non-trapped (naked) cells, respectively. All groups were exposed either to vacuum alone or to vacuum plus VUV. Our results demonstrate that halite can serve as protection against vacuum and VUV radiation, regardless of the type of microorganism. In addition, we found that the protection is higher than provided by crystals obtained from mixtures of salts. This extends the protective effects of halite documented in previous studies and reinforces the possibility to consider the crystals of this mineral as potential preservation structures in airless bodies or as vehicles for the interplanetary transfer of microorganisms.

Bimolecular Excited-State Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer within Encounter Complexes

Bimolecular excited-state proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET*) was observed for reaction of the triplet MLCT state of [(dpab)₂Ru(4,4'-dhbpy)]²⁺ (dpab = 4,4'-di(n-propyl)amido-2,2'-bipyridine, 4,4'-dhbpy = 4,4'-dihydroxy-2,2'-bipyridine) with N-methyl-4,4'-bipyridinium (MQ⁺) and N-benzyl-4,4'-bipyridinium (BMQ⁺) in dry acetonitrile solutions. The PCET* reaction products, the oxidized and deprotonated Ru complex, and the reduced protonated MQ⁺ can be distinguished from the excited state electron transfer (ET*) and the excited state proton transfer (PT*) products by the difference in the visible absorption spectrum of the species emerging from the encounter complex. The observed behavior differs from that of reaction of the MLCT state of [(bpy)₂Ru(4,4'-dhbpy)]²⁺ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) with MQ⁺, where initial ET* is followed by diffusion-limited proton transfer from the coordinated 4,4'-dhbpy to MQ⁰. The difference in observed behavior can be rationalized based on changes in the free energies of ET* and PT*. Substitution of bpy with dpab results in the ET* process becoming significantly more endergonic and the PT* reaction becoming somewhat less endergonic.

How Do Liquid-Junction Potentials and Medium Polarity at Electrode Surfaces Affect Electrochemical Analyses for Charge-Transfer Systems?

The importance of electrochemical analysis for charge-transfer science cannot be overstated. Interfaces in electrochemical cells present certain challenges in the interpretation and the utility of the analysis. This publication focuses on: (1) the medium polarity that redox species experience at the electrode surfaces that is smaller than the polarity in the bulk media and (2) the liquid-junction potentials from interfacing electrolyte solutions of different organic solvents, namely, dichloromethane, benzonitrile, and acetonitrile. Electron-donor-acceptor pairs of aromatics with similar structures (i.e., 1-naphthylamine and 1-nitronaphthalene, 10-methylphenothiazine and 9-nitroanthracene, and 1-aminopyrene and 1-nitropyrene) serve as redox analytes for this study. Using the difference between the reduction potentials of the oxidized donors and the acceptors eliminates the effects of the liquid junctions on the analysis of charge-transfer thermodynamics. This analysis also offers a means for evaluating the medium polarity that the redox species experience at the surface of the working electrode and the effects of the liquid junctions on the measured reduction potentials. While the liquid-junction potentials between the dichloromethane and acetonitrile solutions amount to about 90 mV, for the benzonitrile-acetonitrile junctions, the potentials are only about 30 mV. The presented methods for analyzing the measured electrochemical characteristics of donors and acceptors illustrate a means for improved evaluation of the thermodynamics of charge-transfer systems.

An actinometric method to characterize performance of reflecting UVC reactors used for water treatment

The applicability of chemical actinometry to characterize the fluence in UV reactors with reflections, non-parallel light, and variable water transmittance is limited due to the unknown effective path length or hydraulic shortcuts within the reactor. In this study, the effects of reflection and transmittance on actinometry were examined and a new, optimized and easy method for determining fluence was developed. KI/KIO₃ and uridine actinometry experiments were carried out under controlled conditions using a collimated beam apparatus and a completely mixed batch reactor with or without diffuse reflection and compared to biodosimetry results. Whereas optically opaque actinometers such as KI/KIO₃ are not directly capable of predicting the fluence of reflecting reactors, the results of uridine actinometry are influenced by reflection and transmission. To precisely predict the fluence rate in UV reactors with uridine, knowledge about the effective optical path length of the light is needed. Here, an existing method to mathematically calculate the optical path length was adopted and optimized for uridine actinometry. Results for average fluence were validated by biodosimetry using MS2 phages under different degrees of reflection and transmission. It could be shown that by modifying the bottom of the reactor with diffusely reflecting polytetrafluoroethylene foil, the fluence rate was increased by a factor of approximately 2.6 and the path length by factor of 2.4. When only half of the bottom was covered with reflective foil, fluence rate increased by a factor of 1.8 and path length by 1.8. Although this new approach cannot replace biodosimetry, to predict the fluence distribution received by microorganisms, it can provide means to characterize more complex reactor designs, validate results of advanced reactor modeling, and quantify fluence for non-parallel irradiation and reflective light, especially for the application of high fluence (e.g., advanced oxidation processes), where biodosimetry may be too sensitive. Further, comparing the fluence obtained with actinometry to the results of biodosimetry might qualitatively indicate hydraulic short cuts or unideal fluence distributions for flow-through reactors.

Mechanisms and Synthetic Strategies in Visible Light-Driven [2+2]-Heterocycloadditions

The synthesis of four membered heterocycles usually requires multi-step procedures and prefunctionalized reactants. A straightforward alternative is the photochemical [2+2]-heterocycloaddition between an alkene and a carbonyl derivative, conventionally based on the photoexcitation of this latter. However, this approach is limited by the absorption profile of the carbonyl, requiring in most of the cases the use of high-energy UV-light, that often results in undesired side reactions and/or the degradation of the reaction components. The development of new and milder visible light-driven [2+2]-heterocycloadditions is, therefore, highly desirable. In this Review, we highlight the most relevant achievements in the development of [2+2]-heterocycloadditions promoted by visible light, with a particular emphasis on the involved reaction mechanisms. The open challenges will also be discussed, suggesting new possible evolutions, and stimulating new methodological developments in the field.
