Impact of Attention Training on Academic Achievement, Executive Functioning, and Behavior: A Randomized Controlled Trial

A 5-week Digital Intervention to Reduce Attention Problems in Children With ADHD: A Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial

OBJECTIVE

Growing evidence suggests digital interventions may provide neurocognitive benefits for children with ADHD. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of a digital attention intervention in children with ADHD.

METHOD

In this double-blind randomized controlled trial 55 children with ADHD (5-9 years) were allocated to the intervention (N = 28) or control program (N = 27). Both programs were delivered via touchscreen tablets at home 5 days a week for 5 weeks. The primary outcome was change in the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA) Attention Comparison Score (ACS) from pre- to post-intervention.

RESULTS

Participants who received the intervention had significantly greater improvements in the TOVA ACS from pre- to post-intervention than those in the control (p < .044). No intervention effects were observed on secondary outcomes assessing executive functioning, ADHD symptoms, or functional impairment.

CONCLUSION

Collectively these findings provide insufficient evidence for the implementation of digital attention interventions for children with ADHD.

Benefits of Playing at School: Filler Board Games Improve Visuospatial Memory and Mathematical Skills

The aim of the study was to test the effectiveness of cognitive interventions based on modern board games in school settings to improve memory outcomes and math skills. A parallel, quasi-experimental study was carried out with children (n = 234) into third and fourth grades (8-10 years old). School centres were allocated into a general domain intervention (playing memory board games), a specific domain intervention (playing mathematical board games) or a control group (regular classes without playing). Teachers carried out bi-weekly sessions during the last 30 min of mathematical lessons (8 weeks, 15 sessions). Before and after intervention, we individually measured verbal and visuospatial memory outcomes (short-term memory and working memory updating) and mathematical skills (number operations, number ranking, number production and problem solving). The results showed significant transfer effects of both memory and math trainings. In third grade, we found that playing math games showed medium-large effect sizes in visuospatial short-term memory and updating memory, number operations and number ranking compared to the control group. In fourth grade, we found that playing memory games showed significant small effect sizes in problem solving compared to the control group. Playing board games could be a methodology that enhances cognitive and mathematical development in children.

The wide world of technological telerehabilitation for pediatric neurologic and neurodevelopmental disorders - a systematic review

Introduction

The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for assessing and treating cognitive and motor disorders is promoting home-based telerehabilitation. This approach involves ongoing monitoring within a motivating context to help patients generalize their skills. It can also reduce healthcare costs and geographic barriers by minimizing hospitalization. This systematic review focuses on investigating key aspects of telerehabilitation protocols for children with neurodevelopmental or neurological disorders, including technology used, outcomes, caregiver involvement, and dosage, to guide clinical practice and future research.

Method

This systematic review adhered to PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO. The PICO framework was followed to define the search strategy for technology-based telerehabilitation interventions targeting the pediatric population (aged 0-18) with neurological or neurodevelopmental disorders. The search encompassed Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases. Independent reviewers were responsible for selecting relevant papers and extracting data, while data harmonization and analysis were conducted centrally.

Results

A heterogeneous and evolving situation emerged from our data. Our findings reported that most of the technologies adopted for telerehabilitation are commercial devices; however, research prototypes and clinical software were also employed with a high potential for personalization and treatment efficacy. The efficacy of these protocols on health or health-related domains was also explored by categorizing the outcome measures according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). Most studies targeted motor and neuropsychological functions, while only a minority of papers explored language or multi-domain protocols. Finally, although caregivers were rarely the direct target of intervention, their role was diffusely highlighted as a critical element of the home-based rehabilitation setting.

Discussion

This systematic review offers insights into the integration of technological devices into telerehabilitation programs for pediatric neurologic and neurodevelopmental disorders. It highlights factors contributing to the effectiveness of these interventions and suggests the need for further development, particularly in creating dynamic and multi-domain rehabilitation protocols. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of promoting home-based and family-centered care, which could involve caregivers more actively in the treatment, potentially leading to improved clinical outcomes for children with neurological or neurodevelopmental conditions.

Far Transfer Effects of Trainings on Executive Functions in Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Systematic Review and Metanalysis

Executive Functions are a set of interrelated, top-down processes essential for adaptive goal-directed behaviour, frequently impaired across different neurodevelopmental disorders with variable degrees of severity. Many executive-function-training studies in children with neurodevelopmental disorders have focused on near effects, investigating post-treatment improvements on directly trained processes, while enhancements of skills not directly trained, defined as far effects, are less considered, albeit these could be extremely relevant for reducing the negative impact of a disorder's core symptomatology. This systematic review and metanalysis aims to investigate the far effect outcomes after EF training in children with different types of neurodevelopmental disorders. 17 studies met the inclusion criteria for the systematic review, while 15 studies were selected in the metanalysis. An overall statistically significant effect size was found in the majority of far effect outcome measures considered in the studies. In particular, trainings on executive functions determine significant far effects on daily life functioning (0.46, 95% CI: [0.05-0.87]) and clinical symptoms (0.33, 95% CI: [0.15-0.51]). Despite a high variability of the results, intensity, frequency and the laboratory/life contexts dimension seem to be the most influential variables in determining far effects. This systematic review and metanalysis highlights the need to measure far effects of executive function training in neurodevelopmental disorders, selecting treatments not only on directly targeted processes, but also according to far impacts on the functional weakness of the disorder.

Associations Between Executive Functioning, Behavioral Functioning, and Adaptive Functioning Difficulties in Wiedemann-Steiner Syndrome

OBJECTIVES

Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome (WSS) is a neurogenetic disorder caused by heterozygous variants in KMT2A. Recent investigations suggest increased anxiety and behavior regulation challenges among those with WSS although the neurobehavioral phenotype remains largely unknown. This study aims to examine the pattern of and associations between executive functioning (EF) and behavior functioning among those with WSS.

METHOD

This study involved utilizing caregiver-report inventories (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function 2nd Edition, BRIEF-2; Adaptive Behavior Assessment 3rd Edition, ABAS-3; Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, SDQ) to assess day-to-day behavior functioning among those with WSS (N = 24; mean age = 10.68 years, SD = 3.19). Frequency of clinical elevations in daily difficulties in EF, adaptive behaviors, and behavior regulation were reported. Correlations and hierarchical linear regressions were used to determine the relationships between EF with behavior and adaptive functioning.

RESULTS

Out of our sample, 63% met clinical levels of executive functioning difficulties on the BRIEF-2, and 75% with Hyperactivity and 54% with Emotional Problems on the SDQ. In addition, 33% were rated >2 SD below the normative mean in overall adaptive functioning on the ABAS-3. Elevated ratings in BRIEF-2 Shift, reflective of challenges with mental flexibility, predicted more Emotional Problems and accounted for 33.5% of its variance. More difficulties in Emotional Control were related to greater adaptive deficits, accounting for 33.3% of its variance.

CONCLUSIONS

Those with WSS are at risk for EF deficits, hyperactivity, and emotional dysregulation. EF correlates with adaptive and affective behaviors, highlighting the promise of behavioral interventions to target cognitive flexibility, emotional awareness, and reactivity in this population.

Measuring psychological, cognitive, and social domains of physical literacy in school-aged children with neurodevelopmental disabilities: a systematic review and decision tree

PURPOSE

To identify and assess the clinimetric properties of psychological, cognitive, and social competence assessment tools relevant to physical activity for school-aged children (5-17 years) with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

METHODS

Seven electronic databases were searched. Study findings and methodologies were evaluated using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist. Psychometric strength of assessment tools was determined using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation principles (GRADE) (Trial registration: CRD42020180616).

RESULTS

Study criteria were met by eight subscales from the BRIEF2, DMQ17, QI-Disability, SAID, and SDQ. Most subscales examined psychological competence (n = 5), with fewer addressing social competence (n = 2), or cognitive competence (n = 1). Validity was moderate to high strength for most subscales. Reliability was of moderate and unclear strength for two subscales. A five-level decision tree was devised to summarise: (1) physical literacy domains/elements, (2) populations, (3) assessment focus, (4) required resources, and (5) psychometric evidence.

CONCLUSIONS

Subscales are available to assess psychological, cognitive, or social competence. For school-aged children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, these have moderate to high strength psychometric support. A decision tree will assist practitioners in subscale selection. The effect of Self-Regulation Based Cognitive Psychoeducation Program on emotion regulation and self-efficacy in children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

AIM

This study aimed to determine the effect of Self-Regulation Based Cognitive Psychoeducation Program on emotion regulation and self-efficacy in children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and receiving medication.

METHOD

The sample of this study with control group and pre-test, post-test and follow-up randomized experimental design consisted of children followed in the child and adolescent mental health outpatient clinic of a state hospital. The data were evaluated by parametric and non-parametric analyses.

RESULTS

A statistically significant increase was determined in the internal functional emotion regulation mean scores of children, who participated in the Self-Regulation Based Cognitive Psychoeducation Program, measured before, immediately after, and 6 months after the intervention (p < 0.05). A statistically significant increase was also found in their external functional emotion regulation mean scores measured before and 6 months after the intervention (p < 0.05). In addition, a statistically significant difference was found between their internal dysfunctional and external dysfunctional emotion regulation mean scores measured before and 6 months after the intervention; however the mean scores of those in the control group 6 months after the intervention were higher than those in the intervention group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, there was a statistically significant increase in their self-efficacy mean scores measured before and 6 months after the intervention (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The Self-Regulation Based Cognitive Psychoeducation Program was found be effective in increasing the levels of emotion regulation and self-efficacy in children with ADHD.

Multi-domain computerized cognitive training for children with intellectual developmental disorder: A randomized controlled trial

Purpose

To verify the effects of multi-domain computerized cognitive training on intellectual function and adaptive functioning in children with intellectual developmental disorder (IDD).

Methods

Children with IDD were randomized to a multi-domain computerized cognitive training (CCT) group (n = 30) and control group (n = 30). Both groups received a 5-week training program. Intellectual function was assessed by Chinese-Wechsler Young Children scale (C-WYCSI) and adaptive functioning was assessed by the Chinese Vineland Adaptive Behavior Rating Scale (VABS-C), which were used at baseline, post-training, and 3-month follow-up.

Results

There were significant differences for intellectual function and adaptive functioning between the two groups. The CCT group showed significant improvements in total full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) score the Wechsler Intelligence Scale (F[60] = 31.97, p < 0.01) and its subdomain VIQ score (F[60] = 33.83, p < 0.01). For adaptive functioning, CCT had a better adaptive developmental quotient (ADQ) score (F[60] = 28.05, p < 0.01), and subdomain communication (F[60] = 10.86, p < 0.01) and socialization scores (F[60] = 4.35, p < 0.015). Moreover, there was a positive correlation between FSIQ changes and ADQ changes in the CCT group (r_s = 0.74, p < 0.01). A greater increase in VIQ score was associated with a greater increase in adaptive functioning (bootstrapping CI: [0.16, 3.30]) in the CCT group.

Conclusion

Multi-domain CCT improves the intellectual function and adaptive functioning of children with IDD.

Artificial Cognitive Systems Applied in Executive Function Stimulation and Rehabilitation Programs: A Systematic Review

This article presents a systematic review of studies on cognitive training programs based on artificial cognitive systems and digital technologies and their effect on executive functions. The aim has been to identify which populations have been studied, the characteristics of the implemented programs, the types of implemented cognitive systems and digital technologies, the evaluated executive functions, and the key findings of these studies. The review has been carried out following the PRISMA protocol; five databases have been selected from which 1889 records were extracted. The articles were filtered following established criteria, to give a final selection of 264 articles that have been used for the purposes of this study in the analysis phase. The findings showed that the most studied populations were school-age children and the elderly. The most studied executive functions were working memory and attentional processes, followed by inhibitory control and processing speed. Many programs were commercial, customizable, gamified, and based on classic tasks. Some more recent initiatives have begun to incorporate user-machine interfaces, robotics, and virtual reality, although studies on their effects remain scarce. The studies recognize multiple benefits of computerized neuropsychological stimulation and rehabilitation programs for executive functions in different age groups, but there is a lack of studies in specific population sectors and with more rigorous research designs.

Digital cognitive training in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a study protocol of a randomised controlled trial

INTRODUCTION

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders and is a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with daily functioning. Children with ADHD are developmentally vulnerable, with the disorder linked to emotional regulation difficulties, behavioural disturbances, as well as academic challenges. Emerging evidence suggests that children with ADHD may benefit from cognitive training interventions, including those focused on attention. This study aims to assess the immediate and long-term efficacy of an attention training intervention in children with ADHD.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

This study is a preregistered, parallel, double blind, randomised controlled trial. Participants will comprise 104 children with a diagnosis of ADHD aged 5-8 years 11 months. Participants will be randomly allocated to either an adaptive, digital game-based (1) attention training programme (intervention) or (2) a numeracy programme (control). Both programmes will be delivered on a touchscreen tablet, and children will complete five 20 min sessions per week for a 5-week period at home (25 sessions in total). Assessments of the primary outcome (ie, attention and inhibitory control) and secondary outcomes (ie, selective attention, interference control, sustained attention, inhibition, behavioural attention, impairment in everyday functioning, working memory and executive functioning) will occur at preintervention, immediately postintervention and at 3-month follow-up. Multivariate linear regression will be employed to examine primary and secondary outcomes. The data analyst will be blinded to group membership.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

Ethics approval has been obtained from the Monash University HREC (20495). Results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations, media outlets, the internet and various community/stakeholder activities.

Popular interventions to enhance sustained attention in children and adolescents: A critical systematic review

There are a myriad of interventions promoting activities designed to help enhance sustained attention in children and adolescents. In this systematic review, we critically evaluate the evidence behind three popular sustained attention training approaches - cognitive attention training, meditation, and physical activity. Seven databases were searched in addition to secondary searches. Cognitive attention training, meditation training or physical activity intervention studies aimed at improving sustained attention (randomised-controlled or non-randomised-controlled designs) in samples of children and adolescents (3-18 years) were included. We screened 3437 unique articles. Thirty-seven studies satisfied inclusion criteria. In general, cognitive attention training (n = 14) did not reliably improve sustained attention. Physical activity (n = 15) and meditation interventions (n = 8) demonstrated somewhat more potential in enhancing sustained attention, but these effects should be considered preliminary and need to be replicated with greater methodological rigour. Cognitive attention training demonstrated very limited transfer to other aspects of attention. Notably, mindfulness training had rather consistent positive effects on selective attention. Across all three intervention types, there was very weak evidence for transfer to other aspects of cognition, behaviour, and academic achievement. The paper concludes with methodological recommendations for future studies to strengthen the evidence base.

Effect of transcranial direct current stimulation in addition to visuomotor training on choice reaction time and cognition function in amateur soccer players (FAST trial): A randomized control trial

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in addition to visuomotor training (VMT) on choice reaction time (CRT) and cognitive function in amateur soccer players.

DESIGN

Single-center, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group study.

SETTING

Neuroscience and Motor Control Laboratory.

PARTICIPANTS

Thirty Brazilian male amateur soccer players, aged 18-30 years.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Participants were allocated to the intervention or control groups. Both groups performed VMT, but the intervention group additionally underwent anodal tDCS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC; F3). The cathodal electrode was positioned in the right supraorbital region (Fp2). The tDCS was applied at 2 mA for 20 min for five consecutive sessions (24 h intervals). The VMT protocol was delivered during the application of tDCS and was composed of kicking a ball for 10 min (between the fifth and fifteenth minutes of the 20 min of tDCS application). The primary outcome was assessed based on changes in CRT during reaching (non-trained limb) and kicking (trained limb) tasks. Secondary outcomes were overall cognitive function measured by the Trail Making Test part A (TMT-A) and part B (TMT-B), and Digit Span Test forward (DSF) and backward (DSB) scores. All outcomes were evaluated before and after the intervention.

RESULTS

In the primary outcomes, compared with the control group, the anodal tDCS combined with VMT group had greater reduction in CRT for the rectus femoris (p = 0.007) adjusted for age and baseline performance (F (1,26) = 22,23; p < 0,001) and for the triceps (p = 0.039) adjusted for training frequency (days/week) and baseline performance (F (1,26) = 5,70; p = 0,016). No differences were observed in the CRT of other muscles (anterior deltoid [p = 0.181], brachial biceps [p = 0.130], and vastus medialis [p = 0.074]). And, there were no differences between the groups in terms of cognitive function (TMT-A [p = 0.062]; TMT-B [p = 0.320]; DSF [p = 0.102]; DSB [p = 0.345]).

CONCLUSION

Anodal tDCS over the left DLPFC in addition to visuomotor training of a functional task can be an efficient tool for athletes to decrease the CRT of the rectus femoris (trained limb) and triceps (non-trained limb); however, there were no differences between the groups in the others muscles (anterior deltoid, brachial biceps, and vastus medialis), and in terms of cognitive function.

Relationship Between Parent and Teacher Reported Executive Functioning and Maladaptive Behaviors in Children With Down Syndrome

The current study evaluates the concurrent relationship between parent ratings of executive functioning and maladaptive behavior among children and adolescents with Down syndrome and then repeats this evaluation using teacher reports. Parents and teachers of 63 school-age children with Down syndrome rated the child's executive functioning (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function) and behaviors (Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist). For parent and teacher ratings, elevated behavior dysregulation predicted higher levels of rule-breaking, aggressive, and externalizing behavior. For teacher ratings, elevated behavior dysregulation also predicted higher levels of inattention problems. Among both parent and teacher ratings, greater metacognitive difficulties predicted challenges with attention. Understanding the relationship between these constructs has important implications for targets of intervention and developing preventative strategies.

Gamified Attention Training in the Primary School Classroom: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective: This randomized controlled trial evaluated the efficacy of attention training delivered in class on cognitive attention processes, inattention, hyperactivity, working memory, and numeracy in primary school children. Method: Eight classes (n = 98 children; 5-9 years) were cluster randomized to gamified attention training, a placebo program, or a no-contact control condition. Assessments were conducted at baseline, immediately after the 5-week intervention (posttraining), and 6 months later (follow-up). Results: Posttraining, attention training was associated with reduced inattention and hyperactivity within the classroom compared with controls, and reduced hyperactivity at home compared with the no-contact control. At follow-up, reduced hyperactivity within the classroom compared with the no-contact control persisted. No effects of training on cognitive attention processes, working memory, and numeracy were observed posttraining. Conclusion: Classroom-based attention training has select benefits in reducing inattention and hyperactivity, but may not promote gains in cognitive or academic skills in primary school children.

Opportunities, barriers, and recommendations in down syndrome research

BACKGROUND

Recent advances in medical care have increased life expectancy and improved the quality of life for people with Down syndrome (DS). These advances are the result of both pre-clinical and clinical research but much about DS is still poorly understood. In 2020, the NIH announced their plan to update their DS research plan and requested input from the scientific and advocacy community.

OBJECTIVE

The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) and the LuMind IDSC Foundation worked together with scientific and medical experts to develop recommendations for the NIH research plan.

METHODS

NDSS and LuMind IDSC assembled over 50 experts across multiple disciplines and organized them in eleven working groups focused on specific issues for people with DS.

RESULTS

This review article summarizes the research gaps and recommendations that have the potential to improve the health and quality of life for people with DS within the next decade.

CONCLUSIONS

This review highlights many of the scientific gaps that exist in DS research. Based on these gaps, a multidisciplinary group of DS experts has made recommendations to advance DS research. This paper may also aid policymakers and the DS community to build a comprehensive national DS research strategy.

Behavioral and Cognitive Interventions With Digital Devices in Subjects With Intellectual Disability: A Systematic Review

In recent years, digital devices have been progressively introduced in rehabilitation programs and have affected skills training methods used with children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities (ID). The objective of this review is to assess the effects of the use of digital devices on the cognitive functions and behavioral skills in this population, and to acknowledge their potential as a therapeutic tool. Electronic databases were analyzed until February 2020 using search formulas with free terms related to ID and the use of digital systems with children or adolescents. The risk of bias in randomized controlled trials was assessed by means of the modified Cochrane Collaboration tool and the quality level of the non-randomized studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Forty-four studies were analyzed, most of which were categorized as low quality. Of the executive function studies analyzed, 60% reported significant improvements, most commonly related to working memory. Within the cognitive skills, 47% of the studies analyzed reported significant improvements, 30% of them in language. Significant improvements in the social (50%) and behavioral domains (30%) were also reported. These results suggest that digital interventions are effective in improving working memory and academic skills, and positively affect both the social and behavioral domains. Little information has been published regarding the duration of the effects, which could be limited in time. Further research is necessary to assess long-term effectiveness, the influence of comorbidities, and the effects on subjects with severe ID. The inclusion of smartphones and special education centers is also necessary.

Training effects of attention and EF strategy-based training "Nexxo" in school-age students

Given the importance of attention and executive functions in children's behavior, programs directed to improve these processes are of interest. Nexxo-training combines the use of the Nexxo touchscreen application (go/no-go and stop signal tasks) with procedural metacognitive strategies. The present paper reports a test of Nexxo's impact on children aged 6-7 and 8-9 years. We conducted a randomized active-controlled trial involving 108 typically-developing children: 1st grade (N = 61, M = 6.46 years, SD = 0.35) and 3rd grade (N = 47, M = 8.5 years, SD = 0.27), randomly assigned to: (1) experimental, (2) active-control, or (3) passive-control groups. A 2-month follow-up was carried out after the intervention. The 3rd grade experimental group displayed a significant reduction in attentional problems at follow-up compared to both control groups. Executive Function problems were also reduced at follow-up in the experimental group. Participants in this group improved in Supervision (self-monitoring) at post-intervention and follow-up compared to passive-controls. Although group effect was not significant at t1, it was significant at post measures in experimental group compared to passive-controls. Nexxo-training revealed a trend-level improvement in attention and executive functions for children in the 3rd grade.

Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Early Childhood: Birth-5 Years

IMPORTANCE

This Practice Guideline provides stakeholders with a condensed summary of a large number of effectiveness studies. It is a valuable tool for facilitating decision making related to occupational therapy interventions for children ages birth-5 yr.

OBJECTIVE

Early childhood (birth-5 yr) is a critical period in which the foundation of key life occupations is developed (e.g., eating, dressing, play, learning, social participation, rest and sleep, and chores). The development of cognitive, motor, social-emotional, and self-care skills is important to support these occupations. This Practice Guideline synthesizes recent systematic reviews (SRs) on these areas of development to promote decision making for and high-quality interventions with this population.

METHOD

Four SRs related to cognition, mental health, motor function, and ADLs analyzed studies published from 2010 to 2017 retrieved from six electronic databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, ERIC, OTseeker, and Cochrane).

RESULTS

A total of 196 articles were included in the SRs, which served as a guide to final clinical recommendations. Case studies describe translation and application to practice.

CONCLUSION

and Recommendations: A variety of interventions within the domain of occupational therapy were found to support the development of cognitive, social-emotional, motor, and self-care skills. Although some of these interventions are typically implemented by occupational therapy practitioners, others can be implemented by parents after training or by teams working in preschool settings. These findings should be used to inform evidence-based practice provided by occupational therapy practitioners working in various early childhood settings.

WHAT THIS ARTICLE ADDS

This Practice Guideline gives occupational therapy practitioners clear information about which interventions will be effective for specific outcomes. Better intervention choices mean better outcomes for young children and their families.

Relationships Between Reaction Time, Selective Attention, Physical Activity, and Physical Fitness in Children

The objective of this study was to analyze the relationships between simple and complex reaction times (RTs) with the physical activity performed weekly, the physical fitness and selective attention in children of the third cycle of primary education. Participants were 119 children aged between 10 and 12 years (M = 10.71; SD = 0.77). The instruments used for data collection were the D2 attention test to analyze selective attention, various tests of the Eurofit and ALPHA-Fitness Battery to evaluate the physical condition, a bioimpedanciometer Tanita TBF 300 to evaluate the body composition, and the FITLIGHT Trainer to measure the simple and complex RTs. The group that carried out more weekly physical activity used less time in simple (p < 0.05, d = −0.68, 95% CI [−1.19, −0.17]) and complex RT tests (p < 0.05, d = −0.63, 95% CI [−1.14, −0.12]). Also, the results showed that the simple RT was related in a significant way with physical fitness, while the complex RT was related significantly to attentional capacity and physical fitness.

Developmental trajectories of executive functions in young males with fragile X syndrome

BACKGROUND

Executive functions (EF) have been identified as impaired in FXS, but few studies have examined their developmental trajectories.

AIMS

The primary aim of this longitudinal study was to examine the development of EF in young males with FXS compared to Mental Age (MA)-matched controls.

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

The sample comprised 56 boys with FXS (ages 7-13 years), and 48 MA-matched typical boys (ages 4-8 years). EF tasks included measures of inhibitory control, working memory, cognitive flexibility/set-shifting, problem solving/planning, and processing speed. Tasks were administered at three time points over five-years.

OUTCOMES AND RESULTS

The MA-Matched Typical boys significantly outperformed the FXS boys on all EF tasks, with the FXS Group showing a pattern of slow, but positive growth on most EF tasks. For working memory tasks, significant interactions were noted between MA and autism symptom severity, and MA and medication status. The probability of task completion increased with higher MA.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

These findings contribute to our understanding of the development of EF in this population. They also lay the foundation for use of EF tasks in treatment efforts, particularly with respect to documenting improvements and practice effects, and in understanding associations with targeted developmental outcomes.

Brain Training in Children and Adolescents: Is It Scientifically Valid?

Background: Brain training products are becoming increasingly popular for children and adolescents. Despite the marketing aimed at their use in the general population, these products may provide more benefits for specific neurologically impaired populations. A review of Brain Training (BT) products analyzing their efficacy while considering the methodological limitations of supporting research is required for practical applications. Method: searches were made of the PubMed database (until March 2017) for studies including: (1) empirical data on the use of brain training for children or adolescents and any effects on near transfer (NT) and/or far transfer (FT) and/or neuroplasticity, (2) use of brain training for cognitive training purposes, (3) commercially available training applications, (4) computer-based programs for children developed since the 1990s, and (5) relevant printed and peer-reviewed material. Results: Database searches yielded a total of 16,402 references, of which 70 met the inclusion criteria for the review. We classified programs in terms of neuroplasticity, near and far transfer, and long-term effects and their applied methodology. Regarding efficacy, only 10 studies (14.2%) have been found that support neuroplasticity, and the majority of brain training platforms claimed to be based on such concepts without providing any supporting scientific data. Thirty-six studies (51.4%) have shown far transfer (7 of them are non-independent) and only 11 (15.7%) maintained far transfer at follow-up. Considering the methodology, 40 studies (68.2%) were not randomized and controlled; for those randomized, only 9 studies (12.9%) were double-blind, and only 13 studies (18.6%) included active controls in their trials. Conclusion: Overall, few independent studies have found far transfer and long-term effects. The majority of independent results found only near transfer. There is a lack of double-blind randomized trials which include an active control group as well as a passive control to properly control for contaminant variables. Based on our results, Brain Training Programs as commercially available products are not as effective as first expected or as they promise in their advertisements.
