Probing ultrafast internal conversion of o-xylene via femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging

The investigation of the ultrafast excited state deactivation mechanisms for coumarin 307 in different solvents

The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) processes of coumarin 307 (C307) in different solvents were investigated by performing steady-state/time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopic and steady-state photoluminescence spectroscopic characterizations in combination with time-dependent density functional theoretical calculation (TDDFT). The study unveiled the remarkable influence of solvent polarity and the strength of intermolecular hydrogen bonds formed between the solutes and solvents on the relaxation dynamics of the electronic excited state. Significantly, the emergence of the TICT state was observed in polar solvents, specifically dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxidemethanol (DMSO), owing to their inherent polarity as well as the enhanced intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. Interestingly, even in a weak polar solvent such as methanol (MeOH), the TICT state was also observed due to the intensified hydrogen bonding effects. Conversely, nonpolar solvents, exemplified by 1,4-dioxane (Diox), resulted in the stabilization of the ICT state due to the augmented N-H⋯O hydrogen bonding interactions. The experimental findings were corroborated by the computational calculations, thus ensuring the reliability of the conclusions drawn. Furthermore, schematic diagrams were presented to illustrate the mechanisms underlying the excited-state deactivation. Overall, this investigation contributes valuable mechanistic insights and provides a comprehensive understanding of the photochemical and photophysical properties exhibited by coumarin dyes.

Intersystem Crossing of 2-Methlypyrazine Studied by Femtosecond Photoelectron Imaging

2-methylpyrazine was excited to the high vibrational dynamics of the S1 state with 260 nm femtosecond laser light, and the evolution of the excited state was probed with 400 nm light. Because it was unstable, the S1 state decayed via intersystem crossing to the triplet state T1, and it may have decayed to the ground state S0 via internal conversion. S1-to-T1 intersystem crossing was observed by combining time-resolved mass spectrometry and time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The crossover time scale was 23 ps. Rydberg states were identified, and the photoelectron spectral and angular distributions indicated accidental resonances of the S1 and T1 states with the 3s and 3p Rydberg states, respectively, during ionization.

Methyl substitution effects on the non-adiabatic dynamics of benzene: lifting three-state quasi-degeneracy at conical intersections

Previously, theoretical calculations on the non-adiabatic dynamics of benzene from the S₂ state have indicated that the S₂/S₁ and S₁/S₀ conical intersections (CIs) facilitate ballistic nuclear wavepacket motion from S₂ to S₀ (fast channel) and branching to S₁ (slow channel). In this paper, we present time-resolved photoelectron spectra of benzene and its methyl-derivatives (toluene and o-xylene) measured with a vacuum-UV laser, which clearly reveal both the fast and slow channels. The extremely short propagation time of the wavepacket between the two CIs of benzene indicates that the two are in close proximity to each other, while methyl substitution extends the propagation time and decreases the branching ratio into the fast channel. The results suggest that the quasi-degeneracy of the three states in benzene is lifted by the geometrical shifts of the CIs by methyl substitution.

Real-time observation of cascaded electronic relaxation processes in p-Fluorotoluene

Ultrafast electronic relaxation processes following two photoexcitation of 400nm in p-Fluorotoluene (pFT) have been investigated utilizing time-resolved photoelectron imaging coupled with time-resolved mass spectroscopy. Cascaded electronic relaxation processes started from the electronically excited S₂ state are directly imaged in real time and well characterized by two distinct time constants of ~85±10fs and 2.4±0.3ps. The rapid component corresponds to the lifetime of the initially excited S₂ state, including the structure relaxation from the Franck-Condon region to the conical intersection of S₂/S₁ and the subsequent internal conversion to the highly excited S₁ state. While, the slower relaxation constant is attributed to the further internal conversion to the high levels of S₀ from the secondarily populated S₁ locating in the channel three region. Moreover, dynamical differences with benzene and toluene of analogous structures, including, specifically, the slightly slower relaxation rate of S₂ and the evidently faster decay of S₁, are also presented and tentatively interpreted as the substituent effects. In addition, photoelectron kinetic energy and angular distributions reveal the feature of accidental resonances with low-lying Rydberg states (the 3p, 4s and 4p states) during the multi-photon ionization process, providing totally unexpected but very interesting information for pFT.

Role of electronic correlations in photoionization of NO2 in the vicinity of the 2A1/2B2 conical intersection

We present the first ab initio multi-channel photoionization calculations for NO₂ in the vicinity of the ²A₁/²B₂ conical intersection, for a range of nuclear geometries, using our newly developed set of tools based on the ab initio multichannel R-matrix method.

On the Dynamics of Xylene Isomers Excited in the Vacuum-Ultraviolet (VUV) Region

We report on the dynamics of electronically excited o-, m-, and p-xylene on the femtosecond timescale by employing the vacuum-ultraviolet pump-IR probe mass spectrometry technique. The molecules were excited by the fifth harmonic (λ=160 nm) of a Ti:sapphire laser at a superposition of the S3 valence with several Rydberg states. The relaxation pathways were investigated by studying the parent P(+) and the fragment [P-H](+) and [P-CH3 ](+) time-resolved signals generated after interaction with the fundamental beam (λ=800 nm). Relaxation from the excited valence states was found to depend on the relative positions of the methyl groups on the ring. An increasing trend in the order o<m<p was observed for the lifetime of S3 , whereas that of the second valence state S2 presented the opposite trend. Conclusions on the possible deformations and vibrations induced during the relaxation process were drawn: ring deformation involving methyl motion takes place.

Visualizing competing intersystem crossing and internal conversion with a complementary measurement

A complementary measurement method based on a home-built double-sided velocity map imaging setup is introduced. This method can simultaneously obtain time-resolved photoelectron imaging and fragment ion imaging. It has been successfully applied to investigate the ultrafast dynamics of the second singlet electronically excited state (S2) in m-xylene. Time-resolved photoelectron and ion signals derived from the initial populated S2 state are tracked following two-photon absorption of a pump pulse. Time-of-flight mass spectra (TOFMS) show that there are dominant parent ions and one fragment ions with methyl loss during such a process. According to the measured photoelectron images and fragment ions images, transient kinetic energy distributions and angular distributions of the generated photoelectrons and fragments are obtained and analyzed. Compared to stand-alone photoelectron imaging, the obtained fragment ion imaging is powerful for further understanding the mechanisms especially when the dissociation occurs during the pump-probe ionization. Two competing channels intersystem crossing T3←S2 and internal conversion S1←S2 are attributed to the deactivation of the S2 state. A lifetime of ∼50 fs for the initially excited S2 state, of ∼276 fs for the secondary populated S1 state, and of 5.76 ps for the T3 state is inferred.

Ultrafast imaging of electronic relaxation in n-propylbenzene: Direct observation of intermediate state

The ultrafast dynamics of the second singlet electronically excited state (S2) in n-propylbenzene has been investigated by femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging coupled with photofragmentation spectroscopy. The intermediate state for the deactivation of the S2 state is observed by transient photoelectron kinetic energy distributions and photoelectron angular distributions. An ultrafast electronic relaxation process on timescale of the fitted ∼50 fs was observed in the S2 state by time-resolved photoelectron imaging and it is attributed to the S1←S2 internal conversion (IC). The time constant of 1.23 (±0.2) ps is determined for the further deactivation of the intermediate S1 state.

Real-time observation of ultrafast internal conversion in ethylbenzene by femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging

The ultrafast dynamics of the second singlet electronically excited state (S₂) in ethylbenzene has been studied by femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging. The time evolution of the photoelectron signal can be well described by a biexponential decay: a rapid relaxation pathway with a time constant of 60 ( ± 9) fs and a longer-lived channel on a timescale of 2.58 ( ± 0.22) ps. The rapid relaxation is ascribed to the ultrafast internal conversion from the S₂ state to the vibrationally hot S₁ state. This internal conversion process has been observed in real time. The slow photoelectron signal reflects the depopulation of secondarily populated high vibronic S₁ state.

Charged particle velocity map image reconstruction with one-dimensional projections of spherical functions

Velocity map imaging (VMI) is used in mass spectrometry and in angle resolved photo-electron spectroscopy to determine the lateral momentum distributions of charged particles accelerated towards a detector. VM-images are composed of projected Newton spheres with a common centre. The 2D images are usually evaluated by a decomposition into base vectors each representing the 2D projection of a set of particles starting from a centre with a specific velocity distribution. We propose to evaluate 1D projections of VM-images in terms of 1D projections of spherical functions, instead. The proposed evaluation algorithm shows that all distribution information can be retrieved from an adequately chosen set of 1D projections, alleviating the numerical effort for the interpretation of VM-images considerably. The obtained results produce directly the coefficients of the involved spherical functions, making the reconstruction of sliced Newton spheres obsolete.

Time-resolved photoelectron imaging of S2 → S1 internal conversion in benzene and toluene

Ultrafast internal conversion of benzene and toluene from the S(2) states was studied by time-resolved photoelectron imaging with a time resolution of 22 fs. Time-energy maps of the photoelectron intensity and the angular anisotropy were generated from a series of photoelectron images. The photoelectron kinetic energy distribution exhibits a rapid energy shift and intensity revival, which indicates nuclear motion on the S(2) adiabatic surface, while the ultrafast evolution of the angular anisotropy revealed a change in the electronic character of the S(2) adiabatic surface. From their decay profiles of the total photoelectron intensity, the time constants of 48 ± 4 and 62 ± 4 fs were determined for the population decay from the S(2) states in benzene and toluene, respectively.

Study of ultrafast dynamics of 2-picoline by time-resolved photoelectron imaging

The dynamics of electronically excited states in 2-picoline is studied using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging spectroscopy. The internal conversion from the S(2) state to the vibrationally excited S(1) state is observed in real time. The secondarily populated high vibronic S(1) state deactivates further to the S(0) state. Photoelectron energy and angular distributions reveal the feature of ionization from the singlet 3p Rydberg states. In addition, variation of time-dependent anisotropy parameters indicates the rotational coherence of the molecule.

Real-time visualization of the dynamic evolution of CS2 4d and 6s Rydberg wave packet components

The dynamic evolution of CS2 4d and 6s Rydberg wave packet components has been experimentally visualized via femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging coupled with time-resolved mass spectroscopy. The temporal evolution of the four components of the prepared Rydberg wave packet is directly observed as time-dependent changes of the intensities of different parts in the main photoelectron peak. Furthermore, time-resolved photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) clearly reflect the different component characters of 4d and 6s molecular orbitals. The lifetime of Rydberg wave packets is determined to be about 830fs and their decay is attributed to predissociation. Our results suggest the possibility of directly visualizing and determining the amplitudes and relative phases of different electronic and vibrational wave packet components in polyatomic molecules.
