Gold nanoring trimers: a versatile structure for infrared sensing

Multispectral plasmonic biosensors based on a Penta-supercell metamaterial for detection of prostate-specific antigen: Ultrasensitive in LC resonance mode

Here, the detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) was done using a refractive index sensor based on a plasmonic Penta-supercells metamaterial array. The proposed Penta-supercells metamaterial array consists of four split ring-shaped supercells and a multiplication-shaped supercell in the middle. The results were validated using the three-dimensional Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical method. The detection of low-concentration biomolecules is a typical drawback of conventional plasmonic biosensors. Our designed Penta-supercells shape biosensor benefits from an ultra-sensitivity. In our designed biosensor, simultaneous excitations of three main plasmon (inductance-capacitance (LC), quadrupole, and dipole) modes can occur, and the LC mode shows a superior sensitivity. The structure was designed optimally, and three different types of metals (Au, Ag, and Al) were examined. LC mode appeiers in Ag and Au and this mode is not seen in Al. Also, the results of this study show the superiority of Ag to Au and Al. Based on the results of this study, the proposed structure achieves a record high sensitivity of 2256 nm/RIU in LC mode and high sensitivity of 1022 nm/RIU in quadrupole mode, and 494 nm/RIU in dipole mode. As another result, the proposed structure is insensitive to orthogonal polarization. The full utilization of these three resonance plasmon modes shows bright prospects for multi-spectral application. In the case of biosensor application, the designed Penta-supercells-based biosensor and its ultra-high sensitivity of 2256 nm/RIU (4.5 times larger than the sensitivity of conventional plasmonic structures) can help the medical to detect low concentrations.

Principle and Applications of Multimode Strong Coupling Based on Surface Plasmons

In the past decade, strong coupling between light and matter has transitioned from a theoretical idea to an experimental reality. This represents a new field of quantum light–matter interaction, which makes the coupling strength comparable to the transition frequencies in the system. In addition, the achievement of multimode strong coupling has led to such applications as quantum information processing, lasers, and quantum sensors. This paper introduces the theoretical principle of multimode strong coupling based on surface plasmons and reviews the research related to the multimode interactions between light and matter. Perspectives on the future development of plasmonic multimode coupling are also discussed.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are among the most common and powerful label-free refractive index-based biosensing techniques available nowadays. Focusing on LSPR sensors, their performance is highly dependent on the size, shape, and nature of the nanomaterial employed. Indeed, the tailoring of those parameters allows the development of LSPR sensors with a tunable wavelength range between the ultra-violet (UV) and near infra-red (NIR). Furthermore, dealing with LSPR along optical fiber technology, with their low attenuation coefficients at NIR, allow for the possibility to create ultra-sensitive and long-range sensing networks to be deployed in a variety of both biological and chemical sensors. This work provides a detailed review of the key science underpinning such systems as well as recent progress in the development of several LSPR-based biosensors in the NIR wavelengths, including an overview of the LSPR phenomena along recent developments in the field of nanomaterials and nanostructure development towards NIR sensing. The review ends with a consideration of key advances in terms of nanostructure characteristics for LSPR sensing and prospects for future research and advances in this field.

Nanoscale Refractive Index Sensors with High Figures of Merit via Optical Slot Antennas

Nanoscale refractive index (RI) sensors based on a single nanorod or nanoantenna typically suffer from a low figure of merit (FOM) due to the large full width at half-maximum of the plasmonic dipole resonance. Here, we demonstrate nanosensors with a high FOM and a sensing volume that is much smaller than λ³ using slot antennas. Two configurations, one based on a bowtie slot antenna (BSA) and one based on a slot antenna pair (SAP), are proposed. The RI information is obtained from the extinction dip that is due to the interference of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which are launched at different nodes of a third-order resonant mode of the BSA or different antennas of the SAP. The high FOM is attributed to the dependence of the extinction spectrum on both the amplitude and the phase of the SPPs. There are important applications for these nanosensors, which can measure the local RI beyond the diffraction limit and can be flexibly integrated.

A Short Review on the Role of the Metal-Graphene Hybrid Nanostructure in Promoting the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor Performance

Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) sensors have potential applications in essential and important areas such as bio-sensor technology, especially in medical applications and gas sensors in environmental monitoring applications. Figure of Merit (FOM) and Sensitivity (S) measurements are two ways to assess the performance of an LSPR sensor. However, LSPR sensors suffer low FOM compared to the conventional Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensor due to high losses resulting from radiative damping of LSPs waves. Different methodologies have been utilized to enhance the performance of LSPR sensors, including various geometrical and material parameters, plasmonic wave coupling from different structures, and integration of noble metals with graphene, which is the focus of this report. Recent studies of metal-graphene hybrid plasmonic systems have shown its capability of promoting the performance of the LSPR sensor to a level that enhances its chance for commercialization. In this review, fundamental physics, the operation principle, and performance assessment of the LSPR sensor are presented followed by a discussion of plasmonic materials and a summary of methods used to optimize the sensor’s performance. A focused review on metal-graphene hybrid nanostructure and a discussion of its role in promoting the performance of the LSPR sensor follow.

Tailoring Optical Properties of a Large-Area Plasmonic Gold Nanoring Array Pattern

A new fabrication route, which combines nanosphere lithography with silicon-based clean-room microfabrication processes, has been developed to produce large-area long-range ordered gold nanoring array patterns in a controllable fashion. Both the experimentation and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation show that the surface plasmon resonance peak (SPR) of the nanoring array pattern can be tuned systematically in a large spectral range by varying the geometry parameters such as the ring thickness, the ring height, the ringer outer diameter, and the gap between neighboring rings. For the Au nanoring arrays with a large gap in the absence of plasmon coupling between neighboring rings, the local electromagnetic (EM) field enhancement occurs at both the outer and inner surfaces of individual nanorings; and the periodicity of Au nanoring array has no any effect on the plasmonic properties. For the Au nanoring arrays with a small gap, plasmon coupling takes place between neighboring rings. As a result, the characteristic plasmonic band is split into two new peaks corresponding to a bonding SPR mode and an antibonding SPR mode. The local EM field enhancement becomes stronger with a decrease in the gap between neighboring rings, but the SPR peaks shift away. Therefore, to maximize the surface-enhanced Raman scattering signal, the geometry parameters of the Au nanoring array need to be tuned to balance the contributions from the resonance excitation (spectral overlap) and the local EM field enhancement.

Electromagnetic Nanoparticles for Sensing and Medical Diagnostic Applications

A modeling and design approach is proposed for nanoparticle-based electromagnetic devices. First, the structure properties were analytically studied using Maxwell's equations. The method provides us a robust link between nanoparticles electromagnetic response (amplitude and phase) and their geometrical characteristics (shape, geometry, and dimensions). Secondly, new designs based on "metamaterial" concept are proposed, demonstrating great performances in terms of wide-angle range functionality and multi/wide behavior, compared to conventional devices working at the same frequencies. The approach offers potential applications to build-up new advanced platforms for sensing and medical diagnostics. Therefore, in the final part of the article, some practical examples are reported such as cancer detection, water content measurements, chemical analysis, glucose concentration measurements and blood diseases monitoring.

Nanoring structure, spacing, and local dielectric sensitivity for plasmonic resonances in Fano resonant square lattices

Lattices of plasmonic nanorings with particular geometries exhibit singular, tunable resonance features in the infrared. This work examined effects of nanoring inner radius, wall thickness, and lattice constant on the spectral response of single nanorings and in Fano resonant square lattices, combining use of the discrete and coupled dipole approximations. Increasing nanoring inner radius red-shifted and broadened the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), while wall thickness modulated the LSPR wavelength and decreased absorption relative to scattering. The square lattice constant was tuned to observe diffractively-coupled lattice resonances, which increased resonant extinction 4.3-fold over the single-ring LSPR through Fano resonance. Refractive index sensitivities of 760 and 1075 nm RIU(-1) were computed for the plasmon and lattice resonances of an optimized nanoring lattice. Sensitivity of an optimal nanoring lattice to a local change in dielectric, useful for sensing applications, was 4 to 5 times higher than for isolated nanorings or non-coupling arrays. This was attributable to the Fano line-shape in far-field diffractive coupling with near-field LSPR.

Optimization of gold nanoring arrays for biosensing in the fiber-optic communication window

To improve the limit of detection in a nanoplasmonic sensor system, the optical performance of the metal nanostructures should be optimized according to the best spectral window of the measurement instrument. We propose that the spectral window from 1460 to 1610 nm can potentially provide ultrahigh instrumental resolution for biosensing. We optimized gold nanoring arrays such that the extinction peak position is inside the proposed window, the extinction peak is sharp enough to track the peak shift with high resolution and the figure of merit (sensitivity/linewidth) of the array is optimized at the same time. The peak-sharpening effect of the array caused by coherent interaction plays a central role in the optimization. The optimized array has a lattice constant in the range [1000 nm,1060 nm], a bulk index sensitivity of around 450 nm/RIU and a figure of merit larger than 4. It is an enabling sensor element for a near-infrared sensor chip with ultrahigh resolution.

Nanorings and nanocrescents formed via shaped nanosphere lithography: a route toward large areas of infrared metamaterials

This paper presents a new approach to nanosphere lithography, which overcomes undesirable manufacturing issues such as complex tilted-rotary evaporation and ion beam milling. A key innovation in this process is the use of non-conductive edge strips placed on top of the samples prior to metal removal. Such elements help to direct the flow of reactive ions during plasma etching and produce well-ordered arrays of metallic nanorings and nanocrescents over large areas of ∼1 cm(2). The obtained highly uniform nanocrescent array exhibits an electric resonance of 1.7 μm and a magnetic resonance of 3 μm. The absorption resonances of the fabricated nanorings depend on their diameters and shift toward shorter wavelengths (λ = 1.7 μm for do = 308 nm) as compared to larger rings (λ = 2.2 μm do = 351 nm). FDTD-based simulations match well with the experimental results. This 'shaped nanosphere lithography' approach creates opportunities to generate nanorings and nanocrescents that promise potential applications in chemical and biological sensing, for surface enhanced spectroscopy and in the field of infrared metamaterials.

Sensing using localised surface plasmon resonance sensors

The bright colours of noble metal particles have attracted considerable interest since historical times, where they were used as decorative pigments in stained glass windows. More recently, the tuneable optical properties of metal nanoparticles and their addressability via spectroscopic techniques have brought them back into the forefront of fundamental and applied research fields. Much of the recent attention concerning metal nanoparticles such as gold and silver has been their use as small-volume, ultra-sensitive label-free optical sensors. Plasmonic nanoparticles act in this case as transducers that convert changes in the local refractive index into spectral shifts of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) band. This LSPR-shift assay is a general technique for measuring binding affinities and rates from any molecule that induces a change in the local refractive index around the metallic nanostructures. By attaching molecular recognition elements (chemical or biological ligands) on the nanostructures, specificity and selectivity to the analyte of interest are introduced into the nanosensor. In this review, we will discuss the different methods used to fabricate plasmonic nanosensors. A special emphasis will be given to techniques used to link plasmonic nanostructures to surfaces. While the difference between colorimetric and refractive index sensing approaches will be briefly described, the importance to distinguish between bulk refractive index (RI) sensing and molecular near-field refractive index sensing will be discussed. The recent progress made in the development of novel surface functionalization strategies together with the formation of optically and mechanically stable LSPR sensors will be highlighted.

Spatial confinement of electromagnetic hot and cold spots in gold nanocubes

We report a near-field imaging study of colloidal gold nanocubes. This is accomplished through a photochemical imaging method in which molecular displacements are vectorial in nature, enabling sensitivity to the polarization of the optical near-field of the nanocubes. We analyze the confinement of both electromagnetic hot and "cold" spots with a resolution of λ/35 and emphasize the particularly high spatial confinement of cold spots. The concept of a cold spot complements the well-known electromagnetic hot spot but can have significant advantages. The application of the ultraconfined cold spots to high resolution imaging and spectroscopy is discussed.

Plasmonic nanostructures for nano-scale bio-sensing

The optical properties of various nanostructures have been widely adopted for biological detection, from DNA sequencing to nano-scale single molecule biological function measurements. In particular, by employing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), we can expect distinguished sensing performance with high sensitivity and resolution. This indicates that nano-scale detections can be realized by using the shift of resonance wavelength of LSPR in response to the refractive index change. In this paper, we overview various plasmonic nanostructures as potential sensing components. The qualitative descriptions of plasmonic nanostructures are supported by the physical phenomena such as plasmonic hybridization and Fano resonance. We present guidelines for designing specific nanostructures with regard to wavelength range and target sensing materials.

Ultrafast vibrations of gold nanorings

We investigate the vibrational modes of gold nanorings on a silica substrate with an ultrafast optical technique. By comparison with numerical simulations, we identify several resonances in the gigahertz range associated with axially symmetric deformations of the nanoring and substrate. We elucidate the corresponding mode shapes and find that the substrate plays an important role in determining the mode damping. This study demonstrates the need for a plasmonic nano-optics approach to understand the optical excitation and detection mechanisms for the vibrations of plasmonic nanostructures.

Substrate-induced Fano resonances of a plasmonic nanocube: a route to increased-sensitivity localized surface plasmon resonance sensors revealed

Symmetry-breaking introduced by an adjacent semi-infinite dielectric can introduce coupling and hybridization of the plasmon modes of a metallic nanostructure. This effect is particularly large for entities with a large contact area adjacent to the dielectric. For a nanocube, a nearby dielectric mediates an interaction between bright dipolar and dark quadrupolar modes, resulting in bonding and antibonding hybridized modes. The Fano resonance that dominates the scattering spectrum arises from the interference of these modes. This analysis provides a strategy for optimizing the sensitivity of nanostructures, whether chemically synthesized or grown by deposition methods, as high-performance localized surface plasmon resonance sensors.

Plasmonic properties of gold ring-disk nano-resonators: fine shape details matter

Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate that fine shape details of gold nanoring-disks are responsible for significant modifications of their localized surface plasmon properties. The numerical results are supported by optical transmission measurements and by atomic force microscopy. In particular, we found that, depending on the ring wall sharpness, the spectral shift of the ring-like localized surface plasmon resonance can be as large as few hundred nanometers. These results shed the light on the strong sensitivity of the surface plasmon properties to very small deviations of the ring and disk shapes from the ideally flat surfaces and sharp edges. This effect is particularly important for tailoring the surface plasmon properties of metallic nanostructures presenting edges and wedges for applications in bio- and chemical sensing and for enhancement of light scattering.
