Impact of social support on the dietary behaviors of international college students in the United States

OBJECTIVE

International students in the US often adopt unhealthy dietary behaviors, perhaps due to lack of familiarity and social support. This study examined the impact of social support on international college students' dietary behaviors.

PARTICIPANTS

This study surveyed international students (N = 318) from five public universities in one Midwest state.

METHODS

Participants completed an electronic survey assessing self-reported eating habits and perceived social support using the Social Support for Eating Habits and the Starting the Conversation (STC) scales. Data analyses included multiple linear regression and multiple logistic regression to test the study's hypotheses. Comparisons were made to explore the impact of perceived social support on international students' dietary behaviors.

RESULTS

Significant predictors of unhealthy dietary behaviors included region of origin (specifically, being from East Asia, Europe and North America) and having families that discouraged healthy eating habits. Additionally, living with immediate family members significantly decreased students' likelihood of having higher friend encouragement for healthy eating habits. Finally, the amount of time participants spent in the US significantly increased their likelihood of having more discouragement of healthy eating from their friends.

CONCLUSIONS

International students' unhealthy eating habits increased when their families discouraged them from healthy eating. Interventions promoting healthy diet among international students should consider including family members to increase social support for healthy eating habits.

Impact of Social Support on the Physical Activity Behaviors of International College Students in the United States

Research has suggested that international students' transition to the United States is often correlated with less physical activity after arriving in the U.S). One reason might be related to reduced social support when living in a foreign environment. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to assess the impact of social support on international college students' physical activity behaviors. Participants (N = 318) from five public universities in one Midwest state completed an electronic survey assessing self-reported physical activity behaviors and perceived social support for exercise (SSE). Data analyses included multiple linear regression, multinomial logistic regression, and multiple logistic regression to test the study's hypotheses. Region of origin, academic level, and friends' SSE were all significant predictors of unhealthy physical activity behaviors. Specifically, friends' SSE was positively associated with higher total physical activity behaviors (F (12, 305) = 4.2, p < .001, R ² = .142) and was a significant predictor of participants' physical activity levels. Although research suggests international students' transition to the United States can impart negative impacts on their physical activity behaviors, we found that greater levels of friends' SSE was associated with increased physical activity behaviors. As university administrators and wellness programs explore interventions promoting positive physical activity behaviors among international students, they should consider including elements that focus specifically on friendship social support to motivate physical activity behaviors.

Translation and Validation of the Arabic Version of the Capability Assessment for Diet and Activity (CADA) Questionnaire in Saudi University Employed Women

BACKGROUND

The Capability Assessment for Diet and Activity (CADA) is a questionnaire that was developed in English and designed to measure the practical barriers and opportunities for diet and physical activity.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the CADA questionnaire for the Arabic context in a sample of Saudi women employed at a university.

METHODS

The CADA was translated into Arabic using the forward and backward translation process. The Arabic version was then validated with a sample of 125 female Saudi participants. In order to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Arabic version, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was assessed, and a principal component analysis was performed.

RESULTS

The translated CADA had good psychometric quality. The content validity analysis revealed a representativeness score of 99.3% and a degree of clarity of 98.6%, indicating excellent compatibility. The principal component analysis showed a single-factor structure.

CONCLUSIONS

The Arabic version of the CADA questionnaire is now available to assess opportunities to achieve a healthy diet and physical activity level as part of health behavior management, which can lead to more effective interventions for improving people's health in Arabic-speaking countries.

Can Precision Medicine Reduce the Burden of Diabetes?

Precision medicine is a new health care concept intended to hasten progress toward individualized treatment and, in so doing, to improve everyone's opportunity to enjoy good health. Yet, this concept pays scant attention to opportunities for change in the social determinants that are the major drivers of health. Precision medicine research is likely to generate improvements in medical care but may have the unintended consequence of worsening existing disparities in health care access. For prevention, precision medicine emphasizes comprehensive risk prediction and individual efforts to accomplish risk reduction. The application of the precision medicine vision to type 2 diabetes, a growing threat to population health, fails to acknowledge collective responsibility for a health-promoting society.

Exploring the determinants of health knowledge adoption in social media

Health knowledge plays an important role in health education and promotion, in providing critical services to the global population and helping them live healthier lives and make informed health decisions. This study explores what determines health knowledge adoption in the context of Chinese social media, and attempts to explain why there is a gap between health knowledge adoption intention and behavior. Based on the ELM (elaboration likelihood method) and EPPM (extended parallel process model), this paper proposes four processes of health knowledge adoption to construct an explanatory framework, and examines it from the intention-behavior gap perspective, highlighting the mediating effect of trust. Data collected from 355 Chinese respondents was tested using a partial least squares (PLS) approach. The results indicate that perceived threat has a positive effect on health knowledge adoption via the mediator, fear; perceived efficacy has a positive direct effect on health knowledge adoption; and perceived knowledge quality and perceived source credibility both have a positive effect on health knowledge adoption via the mediator, trust. Trust and fear have different impacts on health knowledge adoption intention and behavior, which explains why there is sometimes a gap between them. Theoretical and practical contributions are discussed.

Priorities and Preferences for Weight Management and Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Primary Care

Implementing behavioral interventions for cardiovascular risk reduction and weight management is challenging in primary care. Primary care patients and providers were recruited for qualitative interviews to identify priorities and preferences for addressing weight management. Thematic analysis was used to identify relevant resources, barriers to lifestyle modification, health behavior change, and implementation of weight management strategies into care. Patients and providers prioritized increasing physical activity and healthy diets when managing chronic disease; and reported decreased patient motivation, knowledge, and limited organizational capacity and time among providers to deliver intensive interventions. Providers and patients disagreed regarding who owns accountability for weight management.
