Transition from persistent to anti-persistent correlations in postural sway indicates velocity-based control

Long-range cross-correlations between center of pressure velocity and colored noises provided during quiet standing

Unperceivable electrical noise stimulation has been applied to improve postural control through the enhancement of somatosensory feedback. It has been observed that stimulation with a pink noise (1/f) structure is more effective than stimulation with other noise structures. In addition, the 1/f structure embedded in the postural control system may have a superior effect on postural control stabilization. However, the direct relationship between the long-range correlations of the pink-noise signal applied to somatosensory receptors and those of the postural control system has not been elucidated. Thus, we aimed to explore a common long-range correlation factor shared in the time series of the provided noise and foot center of pressure (CoP) during quiet standing. Sixteen young adults stood quietly on the force platform for 65 s. Four noise conditions (no stimulation and stimulation of knee joints with white-, pink-, and red-noise-like signals) were employed during the standing trials. The detrending moving-average cross-correlation analysis revealed that in each of the anteroposterior and mediolateral directions, the CoP velocity time series displayed significant long-range cross-correlations with the white and pink noise signals provided at that time, whereas such an effect was not observed in the red noise signal. This result indicates that pink and white noise signals would alter the temporal behavior of the CoP during quiet standing, although the mechanism remains to be elucidated.

Exploring the Real-Time Variability and Complexity of Sitting Patterns in Office Workers with Non-Specific Chronic Spinal Pain and Pain-Free Individuals

Chronic spinal pain (CSP) is a prevalent condition, and prolonged sitting at work can contribute to it. Ergonomic factors like this can cause changes in motor variability. Variability analysis is a useful method to measure changes in motor performance over time. When performing the same task multiple times, different performance patterns can be observed. This variability is intrinsic to all biological systems and is noticeable in human movement. This study aims to examine whether changes in movement variability and complexity during real-time office work are influenced by CSP. The hypothesis is that individuals with and without pain will have different responses to office work tasks. Six office workers without pain and ten with CSP participated in this study. Participant's trunk movements were recorded during work for an entire week. Linear and nonlinear measures of trunk kinematic displacement were used to assess movement variability and complexity. A mixed ANOVA was utilized to compare changes in movement variability and complexity between the two groups. The effects indicate that pain-free participants showed more complex and less predictable trunk movements with a lower degree of structure and variability when compared to the participants suffering from CSP. The differences were particularly noticeable in fine movements.

A comprehensive multivariate analysis of the center of pressure during quiet standing in patients with Parkinson's disease

BACKGROUND

We hypothesized that postural instability observed in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) can be classified as distinct subtypes based on comprehensive analyses of various evaluated parameters obtained from time-series of center of pressure (CoP) data during quiet standing. The aim of this study was to characterize the postural control patterns in PD patients by performing an exploratory factor analysis and subsequent cluster analysis using CoP time-series data during quiet standing.

METHODS

127 PD patients, 47 aged 65 years or older healthy older adults, and 71 healthy young adults participated in this study. Subjects maintain quiet standing for 30 s on a force platform and 23 variables were calculated from the measured CoP time-series data. Exploratory factor analysis and cluster analysis with a Gaussian mixture model using factors were performed on each variable to classify subgroups based on differences in characteristics of postural instability in PD.

RESULTS

The factor analysis identified five factors (magnitude of sway, medio-lateral frequency, anterio-posterior frequency, component of high frequency, and closed-loop control). Based on the five extracted factors, six distinct subtypes were identified, which can be considered as subtypes of distinct manifestations of postural disorders in PD patients. Factor loading scores for the clinical classifications (younger, older, and PD severity) overlapped, but the cluster classification scores were clearly separated.

CONCLUSIONS

The cluster categorization clearly identifies symptom-dependent differences in the characteristics of the CoP, suggesting that the detected clusters can be regarded as subtypes of distinct manifestations of postural disorders in patients with PD.

Brownian processes in human motor control support descending neural velocity commands

The motor neuroscience literature suggests that the central nervous system may encode some motor commands in terms of velocity. In this work, we tackle the question: what consequences would velocity commands produce at the behavioral level? Considering the ubiquitous presence of noise in the neuromusculoskeletal system, we predict that velocity commands affected by stationary noise would produce "random walks", also known as Brownian processes, in position. Brownian motions are distinctively characterized by a linearly growing variance and a power spectral density that declines in inverse proportion to frequency. This work first shows that these Brownian processes are indeed observed in unbounded motion tasks e.g., rotating a crank. We further predict that such growing variance would still be present, but bounded, in tasks requiring a constant posture e.g., maintaining a static hand position or quietly standing. This hypothesis was also confirmed by experimental observations. A series of descriptive models are investigated to justify the observed behavior. Interestingly, one of the models capable of accounting for all the experimental results must feature forward-path velocity commands corrupted by stationary noise. The results of this work provide behavioral support for the hypothesis that humans plan the motion components of their actions in terms of velocity.

A static posturography guide to implementing time-to-boundary

The emergence of time-to-boundary provides an advanced representation of the spatiotemporal characteristics of postural control through the estimation of the time required for the center of pressure to reach the boundary of the base of support. Time-to-boundary has demonstrated its utility in several healthy and clinical adoptions; however, unknown inconsistencies among studies exist. Text and graphical representations understandably highlight idealistic standards, but new investigators to this measure are forced to wade through the same potential pitfalls that others have addressed, but the field has neglected to concatenate. The purpose of this communication is to share recent methodological advancements made to enhance time-to-boundary and describe the components of the time-to-boundary code that is being made publicly accessible for the first time. We anticipate future researchers who wish to apply this methodology to their data processing toolbox could utilize our script in full, with any deviations in potential future developments noted in clear fashion. Historically, researchers (including ourselves) have had to interpret text-based descriptions of the existing literature into quantitative steps in a computational mathematics script. In contrast to fixed process measures that do not require investigator input (e.g., path length), time-to-boundary poses two distinct but connected challenges to investigators. The coding process itself can be a hurdle for novices or practitioners. Second, transferring logical considerations such as robust, objective event detection routines must be defended in the review process. This comprehensive guide to time-to-boundary, as used in our applications, should enhance adoption and advance the comprehension of postural control.

Fractal Time Series: Background, Estimation Methods, and Performances

Over the past 40 years, from its classical application in the characterization of geometrical objects, fractal analysis has been progressively applied to study time series in several different disciplines. In neuroscience, starting from identifying the fractal properties of neuronal and brain architecture, attention has shifted to evaluating brain signals in the time domain. Classical linear methods applied to analyzing neurophysiological signals can lead to classifying irregular components as noise, with a potential loss of information. Thus, characterizing fractal properties, namely, self-similarity, scale invariance, and fractal dimension (FD), can provide relevant information on these signals in physiological and pathological conditions. Several methods have been proposed to estimate the fractal properties of these neurophysiological signals. However, the effects of signal characteristics (e.g., its stationarity) and other signal parameters, such as sampling frequency, amplitude, and noise level, have partially been tested. In this chapter, we first outline the main properties of fractals in the domain of space (fractal geometry) and time (fractal time series). Then, after providing an overview of the available methods to estimate the FD, we test them on synthetic time series (STS) with different sampling frequencies, signal amplitudes, and noise levels. Finally, we describe and discuss the performances of each method and the effect of signal parameters on the accuracy of FD estimation.

Stride-to-Stride Fluctuations of Human Gait Are Affected By Chronobiology: An Exploratory Study

Physiological processes present daily oscillations of ≈24 h, called circadian rhythms. Motor performance, for example, reaches its peak in the afternoon, although this can be affected by chronotype. Certain motor activities, for example, walking, can also be affected by circadian rhythms. Healthy walking exhibits stride-to-stride fluctuations with a fractal-like structure that enables adaptability. While pathology and aging are shown to lead to random-like fluctuations; and, therefore, decreased adaptability; the influence of circadian rhythms remains unknown. This study investigates how these fluctuations present in healthy gait are affected by the time of day and chronotype. Eighteen young adults walk for 10 min every 2 h, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Footswitches are used to determine heel-strike and calculate stride time. Then, detrended fluctuation analysis is used to calculate fractal scaling. A mixed-model Analysis of Variance is used and followed by a backward stepwise elimination process. Tukey's tests are used for pairwise comparisons. The statistical model shows the effect of time during the day (12 p.m. exhibits a higher fractal scaling compared to 8 a.m.); and chronotype (evening-types exhibit higher fractal scaling compared to morning-types). This study reveals the influence of chronobiology on stride-to-stride fluctuations. These findings open new perspectives to integrate circadian medicine in biomechanics.

Experience influences kinematic motor synergies: an Uncontrolled manifold approach to simulated Nordic skiing

Motor synergies are defined as central nervous system mechanisms which adjust participating degrees of freedom to ensure dynamic stability (control) of certain performance variables and have been identified during many motor tasks. The potential for synergistic control of individual segments during full-body tasks is often overlooked. Thus, this study compared individual differences in the potential stabilization of multiple performance variables on the basis of experience during a full-body sport activity. Normalized time series of synergy indices from Uncontrolled Manifold analyses on experienced (n = 9) and inexperienced (n = 19) participants were analysed using statistical parametric mapping during simulated Nordic skiing. Regardless of experience, hand, upper arm, and whole-body centre of mass (COM) kinematics were found to be stabilized by kinematic motor synergies. Only experienced Nordic skiers stabilized trunk COM position at all, while trunk COM velocity was stabilized for a longer duration than inexperienced participants. However, inexperienced participants stabilized hand velocity for a greater duration overall and to a greater magnitude during early pull phase than the experienced skiers. That motor synergies for hand and trunk COM velocity differed between experience groups suggests potential utility for these performance variables as indicators of motor skill development for full-body tasks such as Nordic skiing.

DFA as a window into postural dynamics supporting task performance: does choice of step size matter?

Introduction: Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) has been used to investigate self-similarity in center of pressure (CoP) time series. For fractional gaussian noise (fGn) signals, the analysis returns a scaling exponent, DFA-α, whose value characterizes the temporal correlations as persistent, random, or anti-persistent. In the study of postural control, DFA has revealed two time scaling regions, one at the short-term and one at the long-term scaling regions in the diffusion plots, suggesting different types of postural dynamics. Much attention has been given to the selection of minimum and maximum scales, but the choice of spacing (step size) between the window sizes at which the fluctuation function is evaluated may also affect the estimates of scaling exponents. The aim of this study is twofold. First, to determine whether DFA can reveal postural adjustments supporting performance of an upper limb task under variable demands. Second, to compare evenly-spaced DFA with two different step sizes, 0.5 and 1.0 in log2 units, applied to CoP time series. Methods: We analyzed time series of anterior-posterior (AP) and medial-lateral (ML) CoP displacement from healthy participants performing a sequential upper limb task under variable demand. Results: DFA diffusion plots revealed two scaling regions in the AP and ML CoP time series. The short-term scaling region generally showed hyper-diffusive dynamics and long-term scaling revealed mildly persistent dynamics in the ML direction and random-like dynamics in the AP direction. There was a systematic tendency for higher estimates of DFA-α and lower estimates for crossover points for the 0.5-unit step size vs. 1.0-unit size. Discussion: Results provide evidence that DFA-α captures task-related differences between postural adjustments in the AP and ML directions. Results also showed that DFA-α estimates and crossover points are sensitive to step size. A step size of 0.5 led to less variable DFA-α for the long-term scaling region, higher estimation for the short-term scaling region, lower estimate for crossover points, and revealed anomalous estimates at the very short range that had implications for choice of minimum window size. We, therefore, recommend the use of 0.5 step size in evenly spaced DFAs for CoP time series similar to ours.

Considerations for Applying Entropy Methods to Temporally Correlated Stochastic Datasets

The goal of this paper is to highlight considerations and provide recommendations for analytical issues that arise when applying entropy methods, specifically Sample Entropy (SampEn), to temporally correlated stochastic datasets, which are representative of a broad range of biomechanical and physiological variables. To simulate a variety of processes encountered in biomechanical applications, autoregressive fractionally integrated moving averaged (ARFIMA) models were used to produce temporally correlated data spanning the fractional Gaussian noise/fractional Brownian motion model. We then applied ARFIMA modeling and SampEn to the datasets to quantify the temporal correlations and regularity of the simulated datasets. We demonstrate the use of ARFIMA modeling for estimating temporal correlation properties and classifying stochastic datasets as stationary or nonstationary. We then leverage ARFIMA modeling to improve the effectiveness of data cleaning procedures and mitigate the influence of outliers on SampEn estimates. We also emphasize the limitations of SampEn to distinguish among stochastic datasets and suggest the use of complementary measures to better characterize the dynamics of biomechanical variables. Finally, we demonstrate that parameter normalization is not an effective procedure for increasing the interoperability of SampEn estimates, at least not for entirely stochastic datasets.

Assessing proprioception through time-variability properties of acceleration

Proprioception is a crucial property for movement stability and balance, but its current assessment, based on clinical testing, lacks precision and adequacy in real contexts. This study proposes assessing proprioception and its sensitivity to training effects through acceleration time series recorded during two slackline experiments. In the first experiment, slackliners of different expertise (highly and poorly trained) had to walk on a slackline for 30 s. In the second, twelve beginners had to balance up on the slackline for at least 11 s before and after a training process. Acceleration time series were recorded in body components (legs and centre of mass) and the slackline. The acceleration fluctuations were analysed through Detrended Fluctuation Analysis. The obtained Hurst (H)-exponents were compared between both groups (first experiment) and before and after training (second experiment) using Whitney and Wilcoxon tests, respectively. The values of H-exponents were lower in the highly trained group (Z = -2.15, p = 0.03) (first experiment), and in the post-training conditions (Z = -2.35, p = 0.02) (second experiment). These results suggest better motor and proprioceptive control with training status. Hence, the time-variability structure of acceleration in real contexts, like slackline tasks, is proposed as an objective measure of proprioception and its training effects.

Does the patellar tendon reflex affect the postural stability in stroke patients with blocked vision?

Background

Stroke patients often show postural instability. The patellar tendon reflex is a basic physical examination for stroke patients. This study aimed to explore the correlation between patellar tendon reflex grade and postural stability among stroke patients.

Methods

A total of 37 elderly stroke patients, each with the same quadriceps muscle strength but different patellar tendon reflex levels, were tested on a force platform under eyes-open (EO) and eyes-closed (EC) conditions. Parametric analysis, detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), and power spectral density (PSD) analysis were used in centre of pressure (COP) signal processing. The correlation between the results of measured data processing and the level of patellar tendon reflex was analysed.

Results

All three parameters of COP (the length of the sway trajectory, the mean range of the sway trajectory in the mediolateral [ML] direction [R _x ], and the mean range of the sway trajectory in the anterior-posterior [AP] directions [R _y ]) were negatively correlated with the patient's patellar tendon reflex grade under the EC condition. The DFA results showed that a higher grade of patellar tendon reflex was associated with a smaller value of the crossover point in the AP direction. Only the PSD values of each frequency band in the AP direction were negatively correlated with patellar tendon reflex grade with EO and became negatively correlated in both AP and ML directions with EC. Overall, the results showed a strong correlation between patellar tendon reflex and postural stability in stroke patients when vision was blocked.

Significance

The strong correlation with EC may provide insights into clinic evaluation and treatment for rehabilitation or fall risks of stroke patients.

Characterization of trial duration in traditional and emerging postural control measures

Researchers may select from varied technological and practical options when evaluating balance. Methodological choices inform the quantitative outcomes observed and allow practitioners to diagnose balance abnormalities. Past investigations have differed widely on sampling duration, and these discrepancies hinder comparisons among studies and confidence in outcomes where trials were excessively short. This study aimed to identify necessary trial lengths for common and emerging center of pressure-based measures. We hypothesized that dependent variables would fluctuate over time but eventually reach a stable magnitude. Ninety-seven apparently healthy adults performed quiet standing for 180-seconds (s) with eyes (A) open and (B) closed on a force platform. Anterior-posterior and medial-lateral elements of the center of pressure were used to calculate velocity, time-to-boundary, and Hurst exponents using 15, 30, 90, 120, 150, and 180 s of data. Two-way repeated measures ANOVAs were used to differentiate postural measures over time and between vision conditions. Outcomes were considered stable when significant changes in the measure were no longer observed in the time factor. Dependent measures stabilized for velocity between 60 and 120 s, time-to-boundary between 120 and 150 s, and the Hurst exponent between 30 and 120 s. Velocity measures stabilized quicker with eyes open, whereas vision had no effect or the eyes closed condition was faster to stabilize in time-to-boundary and detrended fluctuation analysis measures. We conclude that 150 s of standing data is sufficient to capture a broad range of postural stability outcomes regardless of vision condition.

Physical activity, balance, and bicycling in older adults

Falls are a critical public health issue among older adults. One notable factor contributing to falls in older adults is a deterioration of the structures supporting balance and overall balance control. Preliminary evidence suggests older adults who ride a bicycle have better balance than those who do not. Cycling may be an effective intervention to prevent falls among older adults. This study aims to objectively measure the relationship between bicycling, physical activity, and balance for older adults. Older adult cyclists (n = 19) and non-cyclists (n = 27) were recruited to (1) complete a survey that assessed demographics; (2) wear an accelerometer for 3 weeks to objectively assess physical activity; and (3) complete balance-related tasks on force platforms. Mann-Whitney U-tests were performed to detect differences in balance and physical activity metrics between cyclists and non-cyclists. Cyclists were significantly more physically active than non-cyclists. Cyclists, compared to non-cyclists, exhibited differences in balance-related temporospatial metrics and long-range temporal correlations that suggest a more tightly regulated postural control strategy that may relate to higher stability. Cycling was observed to correlate more strongly with balance outcomes than other physical activity. Taken together, these results demonstrate the possible implications for cycling as an effective intervention to improve balance and reduce fall risk.

The influence of a vibrotactile biofeedback system on postural dynamics during single-leg standing in healthy older adults

The effectiveness of sensory substitution technology, such as haptic-based vibrotactile biofeedback (VBF), has been verified for balance training and rehabilitation. However, whether VBF training changes postural dynamics in older people remains unknown. This study investigated the influence of VBF training on postural dynamics during single-leg standing in older adults, using detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). Twenty older adults participated in this study. Measurement of postural sway comprised three phases: first measurement session as a baseline test, postural training (day 1), and second measurement session (day 2). The BF group received BF training during the balance training session, while the control group practiced single-leg stance without BF. The center of pressure (CoP) trajectory was recorded in the first measurement session (pre) and second measurement session (post) at 50 Hz. DFA revealed the presence of two linear scaling regions in the CoP, indicating the presence of fast- and slow-scale fluctuations. For the BF group, slow-scale postural dynamics revealed more anti-persistent behavior after training in the anterior-posterior direction. However, the control group showed a change toward more random dynamics after training. These different influences suggest that the BF system might improve error correction strategies during single-leg standing for older adults, while single-leg standing training without the BF system might cause the loss of controllability in single-leg standing. Further, the results of the DFA are discussed in the context of balance training using VBF.

Robotic Light Touch Assists Human Balance Control During Maximum Forward Reaching

OBJECTIVE

We investigated how light interpersonal touch (IPT) provided by a robotic system supports human individuals performing a challenging balance task compared to IPT provided by a human partner.

BACKGROUND

IPT augments the control of body balance in contact receivers without a provision of mechanical body weight support. The nature of the processes governing the social haptic interaction, whether they are predominantly reactive or predictive, is uncertain.

METHOD

Ten healthy adult individuals performed maximum forward reaching (MFR) without visual feedback while standing upright. We evaluated their control of reaching behavior and of body balance during IPT provided by either another human individual or by a robotic system in two alternative control modes (reactive vs. predictive).

RESULTS

Reaching amplitude was not altered by any condition but all IPT conditions showed reduced body sway in the MFR end-state. Changes in reaching behavior under robotic IPT conditions, such as lower speed and straighter direction, were linked to reduced body sway. An Index of Performance expressed a potential trade-off between speed and accuracy with lower bitrate in the IPT conditions.

CONCLUSION

The robotic IPT system was as supportive as human IPT. Robotic IPT seemed to afford more specific adjustments in the human contact receiver, such as trading reduced speed for increased accuracy, to meet the intrinsic demands and constraints of the robotic system or the demands of the social context when in contact with a human contact provider.

Changes in torque complexity and maximal torque after a fatiguing exercise protocol

Torque outputs exhibit non-random fluctuations in their temporal structure, i.e., complexity. Fatigue has been shown to alter this structure. The torque outputs typically become more regular, resulting in decreased adaptability. Importantly, torque complexity was shown a different recovery pattern after fatigue compared to maximal torque. However, it remains to be understood if these uncoupled patterns of recovery are muscle dependent. In addition, it also remains to be investigated if changes in maximal torque and complexity are correlated. This study investigated (i) the effects of a fatiguing protocol on the complexity and maximal torque from plantar flexors and (ii) the relationship between changes in these two outputs. Ten participants visited the laboratory, and measures were taken at baseline, immediately after, 1 h after and 24 h after the fatiguing protocol. Maximum voluntary contraction, isometric contractions at 30% of maximum and pain pressure threshold were collected. Both legs were assessed, but only one was given the fatiguing protocol. Two-way ANOVAs and correlations were conducted. The fatiguing protocol decreased torque complexity (~35%) and maximal torque (~20%), and they exhibited uncoupled patterns of recovery. Moreover, the correlation analysis showed no correlation between changes in these parameters. These findings support that these parameters are independent of each other.

A review of center of pressure (COP) variables to quantify standing balance in elderly people: Algorithms and open-access code

Postural control is often quantified by recording the trajectory of the center of pressure (COP)-also called stabilogram-during human quiet standing. This quantification has many important applications, such as the early detection of balance degradation to prevent falls, a crucial task whose relevance increases with the aging of the population. Due to the complexity of the quantification process, the analyses of sway patterns have been performed empirically using a number of variables, such as ellipse confidence area or mean velocity. This study reviews and compares a wide range of state-of-the-art variables that are used to assess the risk of fall in elderly from a stabilogram. When appropriate, we discuss the hypothesis and mathematical assumptions that underlie these variables, and we propose a reproducible method to compute each of them. Additionally, we provide a statistical description of their behavior on two datasets recorded in two elderly populations and with different protocols, to hint at typical values of these variables. First, the balance of 133 elderly individuals, including 32 fallers, was measured on a relatively inexpensive, portable force platform (Wii Balance Board, Nintendo) with a 25-s open-eyes protocol. Second, the recordings of 76 elderly individuals, from an open access database commonly used to test static balance analyses, were used to compute the values of the variables on 60-s eyes-open recordings with a research laboratory standard force platform.

Inter-limb coupling in individuals with transtibial amputation during bilateral stance is direction dependent

We investigated the control of upright standing in individuals with unilateral transtibial amputation (TTA) by assessing the inter-limb coupling and the coupling between the center of pressure beneath both limbs combined (COP_NET) and the center of pressure (COP) beneath the prosthetic limb and the intact limb. Twenty-one adults with TTA and eighteen unimpaired adults completed 90 s of standing on two parallel force plates. The inter-limb coupling and the coupling between the COP beneath each limb and the COP_NET were assessed by quantifying the synchronization of the COP signals. This included the number of epochs with synchronized signals, the total duration of signal synchronization and the relative phase and deviation phase between the signals. Additionally, magnitude and temporal characteristics of the COP displacements were quantified. Individuals with TTA exhibited looser inter-limb coupling in the anterior-posterior direction, characterized by more shifts between epochs with synchronized signals, shorter total duration of signal synchronization, less in-phase coordination patterns and a higher deviation phase between the two limbs, compared to unimpaired individuals. This coincided with a larger and more irregular postural sway in the TTA group. No group difference was observed in the mediolateral direction. The coupling between the COP_NET and the COP beneath the individual limbs was similarly direction dependent, and tighter for the intact side, suggesting that an intact limb-driven strategy was utilized.

Proof of Concept of Novel Visuo-Spatial-Motor Fall Prevention Training for Old People

Falls in the geriatric population are one of the most important causes of disabilities in this age group. Its consequences impose a great deal of economic burden on health and insurance systems. This study was conducted by a multidisciplinary team with the aim of evaluating the effect of visuo-spatial-motor training for the prevention of falls in older adults. The subjects consisted of 31 volunteers aged 60 to 92 years who were studied in three groups: (1) A group under standard physical training, (2) a group under visuo-spatial-motor interventions, and (3) a control group (without any intervention). The results of the study showed that visual-spatial motor exercises significantly reduced the risk of falls of the subjects.

Slacklining: A narrative review on the origins, neuromechanical models and therapeutic use

Slacklining, the neuromechanical action of balance retention on a tightened band, is achieved through self-learned strategies combining dynamic stability with optimal energy expenditure. Published slacklining literature is recent and limited, including for neuromechanical control strategy models. This paper explores slacklining's definitions and origins to provide background that facilitates understanding its evolution and progressive incorporation into both prehabilitation and rehabilitation. Existing explanatory slacklining models are considered, their application to balance and stability, and knowledge-gaps highlighted. Current slacklining models predominantly derive from human quiet-standing and frontal plane movement on stable surfaces. These provide a multi-tiered context of the unique and complex neuro-motoric requirements for slacklining's multiple applications, but are not sufficiently comprehensive. This consequently leaves an incomplete understanding of how slacklining is achieved, in relation to multi-directional instability and complex multi-dimensional human movement and behavior. This paper highlights the knowledge-gaps and sets a foundation for the required explanatory control mechanisms that evolve and expand a more detailed model of multi-dimensional slacklining and human functional movement. Such a model facilitates a more complete understanding of existing performance and rehabilitation applications that opens the potential for future applications into broader areas of movement in diverse fields including prostheses, automation and machine-learning related to movement phenotypes.

Hip Sway in Patients With Hip Osteoarthritis During One-Leg Standing With a Focus on Time Series Data

This study aimed to investigate the hip sway and the relationship between the center of pressure (CoP) and kinematic parameters regarding the time series scaling component α in patients with hip osteoarthritis (OA) during a one-leg standing task. The scaling exponent α, SD, hip sway maximal acceleration change, and balance performance, which was measured using CoP parameters, were compared between hip OA and control groups during a one-leg standing task. The relationships between balance performance with CoP parameters and kinematic parameters were investigated with the regression analysis. In the hip OA group, the scaling exponent α was smaller in the medial-lateral direction, and the SD and maximal amount of change in hip sway acceleration were larger in the anterior-posterior direction in the hip OA group. In this group, the CoP parameters were significantly associated with α in the medial-lateral direction (negatively) and in the anterior-posterior direction (positively). In the hip OA group, hip sway adaptability in the medial-lateral direction was limited, while the anterior-posterior direction showed greater movement.

Hypothetical control of postural sway

Quiet standing exhibits strongly intermittent variability that has inspired at least two interpretations. First, variability can be intermittent through the alternating engagement and disengagement of complementary control processes at distinct scales. A second and perhaps deeper way to interpret this intermittency is through the possibility that postural control depends on cascade-like interactions across many timescales at once, suggesting specific non-Gaussian distributional properties at different timescales. Multiscale probability density function (PDF) analysis shows that quiet standing on a stable surface exhibits a crossover from low, increasing non-Gaussianity (consistent with exponential distributions) at shorter timescales, reflecting inertial control, towards higher non-Gaussianity. Feedback-based control at medium to longer timescales yields a linear decrease that is characteristic of cascade dynamics. Destabilizing quiet standing with an unstable surface or closed eyes serves to attenuate inertial control and to elicit more of the feedback-based control over progressively shorter timescales. The result was to strengthen the appearance of the linear decay indicating cascade dynamics. Finally, both linear and nonlinear indices of postural sway also govern the relative strength of crossover or of linear decay, suggesting that tempering of non-Gaussianity across log-timescale is a function of both extrinsic constraints and endogenous postural control. These results provide new evidence that cascading interactions across longer timescales supporting postural corrections can even recruit shorter timescale processes with novel task constraints that can destabilize posture.

Effects of white Gaussian noise on dynamic balance in healthy young adults

It has been known that short-time auditory stimulation can contribute to the improvement of the balancing ability of the human body. The present study aims to explore the effects of white Gaussian noise (WGN) of different intensities and frequencies on dynamic balance performance in healthy young adults. A total of 20 healthy young participants were asked to stand at a dynamic balance force platform, which swung along the x-axis with an amplitude of ± 4° and frequency of 1 Hz. Their center of pressure (COP) trajectories were recorded when they were stimulated by WGN of different intensities (block 1) and different frequencies (block 2). A traditional method and detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) were used for data preprocessing. The authors found that only with 75–85 dB WGN, the COP parameters improved. WGN frequency did not affect the dynamic balance performance of all the participants. The DFA results indicated stimulation with 75 dB WGN enhanced the short-term index and reduced the crossover point. Stimulation with 500 Hz and 2500 Hz WGN significantly enhanced the short-term index. These results suggest that 75 dB WGN and 500 Hz and 2500 Hz WGN improved the participants’ dynamic balance performance. The results of this study indicate that a certain intensity of WGN is indispensable to achieve a remarkable improvement in dynamic balance. The DFA results suggest that WGN only affected the short-term persistence, indicating the potential of WGN being considered as an adjuvant therapy in low-speed rehabilitation training.

Detection of oriented fractal scaling components in anisotropic two-dimensional trajectories

We propose a novel class of mixed fluctuations with different orientations and fractal scaling features as a model for anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) trajectories hypothesized to appear in complex systems. Furthermore, we develop the oriented fractal scaling component analysis (OFSCA) to decompose such mixed fluctuations into the original orientation components. In the OFSCA, the original orientations are detected based on the principle that the original angles are orthogonal to the angles with the minimum and maximum scaling exponents of the mixed fluctuations. In our approach, the angle-dependent scaling properties are estimated using the Savitzky-Golay-filter-based detrended moving-average analysis (DMA), which has a higher detrending order than the conventional moving-average-filter-based DMA. To illustrate the OFSCA, we demonstrate that the numerically generated time-series of mixed fractional Gaussian noise (fGn) processes with non-orthogonal orientations and different scaling exponents is successfully decomposed into the original fGn components. We demonstrate the existence of oriented components in the 2D trajectories by applying OFSCA to real-world time-series, such as human postural fluctuations during standing and seismic ground acceleration during the great 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake.

TEMPORAL AND FRACTAL BEHAVIOR OF THE CENTER OF PRESSURE IN PARKINSONIAN AND HEALTHY ELDERLY COHORTS DURING QUIET STANDING

This study investigated the quantitative scaling properties of the center of pressure (COP) as well as the spatial-temporal properties of the COP to elucidate the postural control behavior of healthy elderly (HE) adults and adults with Parkinson’s disease (PD) during quiet standing. Eighteen adults with PD and eighteen HE adults participated in this study. The COP movements were recorded while participants stood on either a firm surface or on a foam pad with their eyes either opened or closed. The sway ranges in the anterior–posterior (AP) ([Formula: see text] and medio-lateral (ML) ([Formula: see text] directions, the total length of the trajectory ([Formula: see text], sway area ([Formula: see text], and scaling exponents ([Formula: see text] from detrended fluctuation analysis were computed from the measured COP data. All temporal variables of the COP in all conditions were found to be significantly larger in the PD group than in the HE group. Low scaling exponents obtained for the PD group showed this group possessed diminished postural control ability compared to the HE group. The PD group showed unpredictable open-loop control in both the AP and ML directions. This proprioceptive control became predictable and the time scale relations decreased as the postural challenges increased. The AP and ML closed-loop control of the PD group was more predictable than that of the HE group only when proprioception was distorted using intact visual input, and the visual and proprioceptive inputs were both intact.

Physiological Vibration Acceleration (Phybrata) Sensor Assessment of Multi-System Physiological Impairments and Sensory Reweighting Following Concussion

Objective

To assess the utility of a head-mounted wearable inertial motion unit (IMU)-based physiological vibration acceleration (“phybrata”) sensor to support the clinical diagnosis of concussion, classify and quantify specific concussion-induced physiological system impairments and sensory reweighting, and track individual patient recovery trajectories.

Methods

Data were analyzed from 175 patients over a 12-month period at three clinical sites. Comprehensive clinical concussion assessments were first completed for all patients, followed by testing with the phybrata sensor. Phybrata time series data and spatial scatter plots, eyes open (Eo) and eyes closed (Ec) phybrata powers, average power (Eo+Ec)/2, Ec/Eo phybrata power ratio, time-resolved phybrata spectral density (TRPSD) distributions, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are compared for individuals with no objective impairments and those clinically diagnosed with concussions and accompanying vestibular impairment, other neurological impairment, or both vestibular and neurological impairments. Finally, pre- and post-injury phybrata case report results are presented for a participant who was diagnosed with a concussion and subsequently monitored during treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-activity clearance.

Results

Phybrata data demonstrate distinct features and patterns for individuals with no discernable clinical impairments, diagnosed vestibular pathology, and diagnosed neurological pathology. ROC curves indicate that the average power (Eo+Ec)/2 may be utilized to support clinical diagnosis of concussion, while Eo and Ec/Eo may be utilized as independent measures to confirm accompanying neurological and vestibular impairments, respectively. All 3 measures demonstrate area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity above 90% for their respective diagnoses. Phybrata spectral analyses demonstrate utility for quantifying the severity of concussion-induced physiological impairments, sensory reweighting, and subsequent monitoring of improvements throughout treatment and rehabilitation.

Conclusion

Phybrata testing assists with objective concussion diagnosis and provides an important adjunct to standard concussion assessment tools by objectively ascertaining neurological and vestibular impairments, guiding targeted rehabilitation strategies, monitoring recovery, and assisting with return-to-sport/work/learn decision-making.

Changes in postural strategy of the lower limb under mechanical knee constraint on an unsteady stance surface

Joint constraint could limit the available degrees of freedom in a kinematic chain for maintaining postural stability. This study investigated adaptive changes in postural synergy due to bracing of bilateral knee joints, usually thought to have a trifling impact on upright stance. Twenty-four young adults were requested to maintain balance on a stabilometer plate as steadily as possible while wearing a pair of knee orthoses, either unlocked (the non-constraint (NC) condition) or locked to restrict knee motion (the knee constraint (KC) condition). Knee constraint led to a significant increase in the regularity of the stabilometer angular velocity. More than 95% of the variance properties of the joint angular velocities in the lower limb were explained by the first and second principal components (PC1 and PC2), which represented the ankle strategy and the combined knee and hip strategy, respectively. In addition to the increase trend in PC1 regularity, knee constraint enhanced the mutual information of the stabilometer angular velocity and PC1 (MI_STBV-PC1) but reduced the mutual information of the stabilometer angular velocity and PC2 (MI_STBV-PC2). The MI_STBV-PC1 was also positively correlated to stance steadiness on the stabilometer in the KC condition. In summary, in the knee constraint condition, postural synergy on the stabilometer was reorganized to increase reliance on ankle strategies to maintain equilibrium. In particular, a stable stabilometer stance under knee constraint is associated with a high level of coherent ankle–stabilometer interaction.

Postural constraints recruit shorter-timescale processes into the non-Gaussian cascade processes

Healthy human postural sway exhibits strong intermittency, reflecting a richly interactive foundation of postural control. From a linear perspective, intermittent fluctuations might be interpreted as engagement and disengagement of complementary control processes at distinct timescales or from a nonlinear perspective, as cascade-like interactions across many timescales at once. The diverse control processes entailed by cascade-like multiplicative dynamics suggest specific non-Gaussian distributional properties at different timescales. Multiscale probability density function (PDF) analysis showed that when standing quietly while balancing a sand-filled tube with the two arms elicited non-Gaussianity profiles showing a negative-quadratic crossover between short and long timescales. A more stringent task of balancing a water-filled tube elicited simpler monotonic decreases in non-Gaussianity, that is, a positive-quadratic cancellation of the negative-quadratic crossover. Multiple known indices of postural sway governed the appearance or disappearance of the crossover. Finally, both tasks elicited lognormal distributions over progressively larger timescales. These results provide the first evidence that more stringent postural constraints recruit shorter-timescale processes into the non-Gaussian cascade processes, that indices of postural sway moderate this recruitment, and that more stringent postural constraints show stronger statistical hallmarks of cascade structure.

Does the transcranial direct current stimulation improve dual-task postural control in young healthy adults?

Some studies have suggested that postural balance improved after a single session of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), whereas others have found minimal, if any, effects on postural performance. To address the issue of replication in tDCS studies, we re-tested the anodal tDCS effects of left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex while performing a dual-task by increasing the attentional demands associated with more challenging proprioceptive conditions. Twenty-four young adults (mean age: 21.3 ± 1.2 years) were randomly divided into two groups (a "real tDCS" vs. a "sham tDCS" group) were asked to maintain a quiet stance on a force platform. Eight trials were conducted, with eyes open and eyes closed, standing on a firm and foam surface and performing a simple and dual-task (backward counting). The postural performance was assessed by various centre-of-pressure parameters before and immediately after a 20-min tDCS session. No main effect of group and no interaction considering this factor were observed, regardless of the centre-of-pressure variables (all p values > 0.1). No evidence of a more efficient postural control emerged after a tDCS session. Beyond promising research on tDCS to maximize cognitive and behavioural enhancement, the current results indicate that caution needs to be taken when drawing firm conclusions, at least in young healthy adults.

Center of pressure displacement characteristics differentiate fall risk in older people: A systematic review with meta-analysis

Falling is the second most prevalent cause of accidental death in the world. Currently available clinical tests to assess balance in older people are insufficiently sensitive to screen for fall risk in this population. Laboratory tests that record the center of pressure (COP) trajectory could overcome this problem but despite their widespread use, the choice of COP trajectory features for use as a biomarker of fall risk lacks consensus. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at identifying the best COP characteristics to predict risk of falling in older adults. More than 4000 articles were screened; 44 (7176 older adults) were included in this study. Several COP parameters emerged as good indices to discriminate fallers from non-fallers. From sensitivity analysis, Sway area per unit time, anteroposterior mean velocity, and radial mean velocity were the best traditional features. In this study, identification of older people with a high fall risk was demonstrated using quiet-standing recordings. Such screening would also be useful for routine follow-up of balance changes in older fallers in clinical practice.

Subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation Modulates Proprioceptive Integration in Parkinson's Disease During a Postural Task

Defective proprioceptive integration may play a role in the pathophysiology of motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). Dysfunction related to proprioceptively-evoked postural reactions in PD patients is still a controversial issue, with only a limited number of studies to date and mostly discordant results. The aims of the present study were (1) to determine whether or not the proprioceptive defect in PD underlies postural impairment and (2) whether or not deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) affects proprioceptive integration. We examined proprioceptive integration during a postural task in 13 PD patients and 12 age-matched control subjects, using a muscle-tendon vibration paradigm. Analysis of the center of pressure displacement and kinematic data indicates a greater degree of postural destabilization and a reduced ability to maintain a vertical orientation in PD. We found a significant positive effect of STN-DBS on these postural features. Our findings indicate that Parkinson patients, even in the absence of any clinical evidence of instability, falls, or freezing, use proprioceptive information for postural control less efficiently than healthy subjects. Furthermore, STN-DBS was found to improve proprioceptive integration, with positive impacts on postural orientation and balance.

Fatigue-related modulation of low-frequency common drive to motor units

PURPOSE

This study investigated fatigue-related modulation of common neural inputs to motor units (MUs) under 5 Hz, which determines force precision control.

METHODS

Twenty-seven adults performed a sequence of fatiguing contractions. The participants were assessed with a static isometric index abduction at 20% maximal voluntary contraction in the pre-test and post-test. Discharge characteristics of MUs of the first dorsal interosseous muscle were analyzed with decomposed EMG signals.

RESULTS

Along with increases in the mean (58.40 ± 11.76 ms → 62.55 ± 10.83 ms, P = 0.029) and coefficient of variation (0.204 ± .014 → 0.215 ± 0.017, P = 0.002) in inter-spike intervals, the fatiguing contraction caused reductions in the mean frequency (16.84 ± 3.31 Hz → 15.59 ± 3.21 Hz, P = 0.027) and spectral dispersions (67.54 ± 4.49 → 62.64 ± 6.76 Hz, P = 0.007) of common neural drive, as estimated with smoothed cumulative motor unit spike trains (SCMUSTs). Stabilogram diffusion analysis of SCMUSTs revealed significant fatigue-related reductions in the long-term effective diffusion coefficient (1.91 ± 0.77 Hz²/s → 1.61 ± 0.61 Hz²/s, P = 0.020) and long-term scaling exponent (0.480 ± 0.013 Hz²/s → 0.471 ± 0.017 Hz²/s, P = 0.014). After fatiguing contraction, mutual information of force fluctuations and SCMUSTs was augmented roughly by 12.95% (P = 0.041).

CONCLUSIONS

Muscular fatigue could compress and shift the low-frequency common drive to MUs toward lower spectral bands, thereby enhancing transmission of twitch forces through the muscle-tendon complex with a low-pass filter property. The fatigue-induced changes involve increased closed-loop control of the common modulation of MU discharge rates.

Flow as an Embodied State. Informed Awareness of Slackline Walking

Flow during exercise has been theorized and studied solely through subjective-retrospective methods as a “scull bound” construct. Recent advances of the radical embodied perspectives on conscious mind and cognition pose challenges to such understanding, particularly because flow during exercise is associated with properties of performer’s movement behavior. In this paper we use the concept of informed awareness to reconceptualize flow experience as a property of the performer-environment coupling, and study it during a slackline walking task. To empirically check the possible relatedness of the behavior-experience complementary pair, two measures were considered. The experiential realm was quantified by the flow short scale and the behavioral realm by the Hurst (H) exponent obtained through accelerometry time series of the legs and the center of body mass (CoM). In order to obtain a coarse-grained insight about the degree of co-varying within the perception-action flow of performers, we conducted correlational and multiple regression analyses. Measures of behavioral variables (H exponents of the dominant, subdominant leg and the CoM, were treated as explanatory, and the flow scale and its subscale (fluency of movements and absorption) scores asresponse variables containing summarized information about perceptual experiences of performers. In order to check for possible mediating or confounding effects of training parameters on the action-perception variables’ covariance, we included two additional variables which measured the degree of engagement of participants with the task. Results revealed that the temporal structure of fluctuations of the dominant leg, as measured by the Hurst exponent, was a strong mediator of effects of training variables and the subdominant leg fluctuations, on the flow scale and the subscale scores. The magnitude of Hurst exponents of both legs was informative about the degree of stability within the performer-environment system. The degree of critical slowing down, as measured by Hurst exponents, consistently co-varied with the flow scale and subscales. The experience of flow during the slackline walking task was dominantly saturated by the perceived fluency of movements and less so by the absorption experience. The stable co-variance of perception-action variables signified the embodied nature of the flow experience.

Examining Human Unipedal Quiet Stance: Characterizing Control through Jerk

We investigated the quality of smoothness during human unipedal quiet stance. Smoothness is quantified by the time rate of change of the accelerations, or jerks, associated with the motion of the foot and can be seen as an indicative of how controlled the balance process is. To become more acquainted with this as a quantity, we wanted to establish whether or not it can be modeled as a (stationary) stochastic process and, if so, explore its temporal scaling behavior. Specifically, our study focused on the jerk concerning the center-of-pressure (COP) for each foot. Data were collected via a force plate for individuals attempting to maintain upright posture using one leg (with eyes open). Positive tests for stochasticity allowed us to treat the time series as a stochastic process and, given this, we took the jerk to be proportional to the increment of the force realizations. Detrended fluctuation analysis was the primary tool used to explore the scaling behavior. Results suggest that both the medial-lateral and anterior-posterior components of the jerk display persistent and antipersistent correlations which can be modeled by fractional Gaussian noise over three different temporal scaling regions. Finally, we discussed certain possible implications of these features such as a jerk-based control over the force on the foot's COP.

Biases in the Simulation and Analysis of Fractal Processes

Fractal processes have recently received a growing interest, especially in the domain of rehabilitation. More precisely, the evolution of fractality with aging and disease, suggesting a loss of complexity, has inspired a number of studies that tried, for example, to entrain patients with fractal rhythms. This kind of study requires relevant methods for generating fractal signals and for assessing the fractality of the series produced by participants. In the present work, we engaged a cross validation of three methods of generation and three methods of analysis. We generated exact fractal series with the Davies–Harte (DH) algorithm, the spectral synthesis method (SSM), and the ARFIMA simulation method. The series were analyzed by detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), power spectral density (PSD) method, and ARFIMA modeling. Results show that some methods of generation present systematic biases: DH presented a strong bias toward white noise in fBm series close to the 1/f boundary and SSM produced series with a larger variability around the expected exponent, as compared with other methods. In contrast, ARFIMA simulations provided quite accurate series, without major bias. Concerning the methods of analysis, DFA tended to systematically underestimate fBm series. In contrast, PSD yielded overestimates for fBm series. With DFA, the variability of estimates tended to increase for fGn series as they approached the 1/f boundary and reached unacceptable levels for fBm series. The highest levels of variability were produced by PSD. Finally, ARFIMA methods generated the best series and provided the most accurate and less variable estimates.

Abnormal trunk control determines postural abnormalities in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

BACKGROUND:

Postural instability in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) occurs at an early stage of the disease and often results in falls. As ALS is considered a multisystem neurodegenerative disorder, postural instability may result from motor, sensory and central processing deficits.

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS:

We analysed postural control of 12 ALS patients and 12 healthy age-matched control subjects. Postural control was characterised by spontaneous sway measures and measures of postural reactions to pseudorandom anterior-posterior platform tilts, which were then correlated with clinical test scores.

RESULTS:

Spontaneous sway amplitudes and velocities were significantly larger and sway frequencies higher in ALS patients than in control subjects. ALS patients’ body excursions following platform tilts were smaller, with relatively higher upper body excursions. We found high correlations between abnormal postural reactions and clinical tests representing motor or balance deficits.

CONCLUSIONS:

We conclude that ALS patients’ postural abnormalities are mainly determined by an abnormal axial control and abnormally small body excursions as a function of support surface tilts, seemingly indicating better postural stabilization than control subjects. The latter contradicts the hypothesis that muscle weakness is the main source for this deficit. Instead, we suggest an altered central control strategy.

Balance Training With a Vibrotactile Biofeedback System Affects the Dynamical Structure of the Center of Pressure Trajectories in Chronic Stroke Patients

Haptic-based vibrotactile biofeedback (BF) is a promising technique to improve rehabilitation of balance in stroke patients. However, the extent to which BF training changes temporal structure of the center of pressure (CoP) trajectories remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effect of vibrotactile BF training on the temporal structure of CoP during quiet stance in chronic stroke patients using detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). Nine chronic stroke patients (age; 81.56 ± 44 months post-stroke) received a balance training regimen using a vibrotactile BF system twice a week over 4 weeks. A Wii Balance board was used to record five 30 s trials of quiet stance pre- and post-training at 50 Hz. DFA revealed presence of two linear scaling regions in CoP indicating presence of fast- and slow-scale fluctuations. Averaged across all trials, fast-scale fluctuations showed persistent dynamics (α = 1.05 ± 0.08 for ML and α = 0.99 ± 0.17 for AP) and slow-scale fluctuations were anti-persistent (α = 0.35 ± 0.05 for ML and α = 0.32 ± 0.05 for AP). The slow-scale dynamics of ML CoP in stroke patients decreased from pre-training to post-BF training (α = 0.40 ± 0.13 vs. 0.31 ± 0.09). These results suggest that the vibrotactile BF training affects postural control strategy used by chronic stroke patients in the ML direction. Results of the DFA are further discussed in the context of balance training using vibrotactile BF and interpreted from the perspective of intermittent control of upright stance.

Improving Precision Force Control With Low-Frequency Error Amplification Feedback: Behavioral and Neurophysiological Mechanisms

Although error amplification (EA) feedback has been shown to improve performance on visuomotor tasks, the challenge of EA is that it concurrently magnifies task-irrelevant information that may impair visuomotor control. The purpose of this study was to improve the force control in a static task by preclusion of high-oscillatory components in EA feedback that cannot be timely used for error correction by the visuomotor system. Along with motor unit behaviors and corticomuscular coherence, force fluctuations (Fc) were modeled with non-linear SDA to contrast the reliance of the feedback process and underlying neurophysiological mechanisms by using real feedback, EA, and low-frequency error amplification (LF-EA). During the static force task in the experiment, the EA feedback virtually potentiated the size of visual error, whereas the LF-EA did not channel high-frequency errors above 0.8 Hz into the amplification process. The results showed that task accuracy was greater with the LF-EA than with the real and EA feedback modes, and that LF-EA led to smaller and more complex Fc. LF-EA generally led to smaller SDA variables of Fc (critical time points, critical point of Fc, the short-term effective diffusion coefficient, and short-term exponent scaling) than did real feedback and EA. The use of LF-EA feedback increased the irregularity of the ISIs of MUs but decreased the RMS of the mean discharge rate, estimated with pooled MU spike trains. Beta-range EEG–EMG coherence spectra (13–35 Hz) in the LF-EA condition were the greatest among the three feedback conditions. In summary, amplification of low-frequency errors improves force control by shifting the relative significances of the feedforward and feedback processes. The functional benefit arises from the increase in the common descending drive to promote a stable state of MU discharges.

Persistence in postural dynamics is dependent on constraints of vision, postural orientation, and the temporal structure of support surface translations

Activities of daily living require maintaining upright posture within a variety of environmental constraints. A healthy postural control system can adapt to different environmental constraints. Afferent sensory information is used to determine where the body is in relation to the gravitational vertical and efferent motor commands make corrections with the goal of keeping the center of mass within the base of support. The purpose of this research was to understand how vision, direction of translation, and the temporal correlation of the support surface stimuli affected the persistence characteristics of postural dynamics on short and long time scales. Ten healthy young adults performed a standing task with either eyes open or closed, oriented anteriorly or mediolaterally while the support surface underwent structured translations based on different levels of temporal correlation-white noise (no correlation), pink noise (moderate correlation), and red noise and sinusoidal movements (strong correlations). Center of pressure velocity was analyzed using fractal analysis to determine the dynamics of postural control. On the short time scale, persistence was shown to be stronger with eyes closed, in the mediolateral direction, and when the structure of translation contained stronger temporal correlation. On the long time scale, anti-persistence was stronger with eyes closed, in the mediolateral direction, and for all structures of movement except red noise. This study provides deeper insight into the flexibility existing in human movement responses to structured environmental stimuli through the fractal analysis of movement variability.

Sampling frequency influences sample entropy of kinematics during walking

Sample entropy (SaEn) has been used to assess the regularity of lower limb joint angles during walking. However, changing sampling frequency and the number of included strides can potentially affect the outcome. The present study investigated the effect of sample frequency and the number of included strides on the calculations of SaEn in joint angle signals recorded during treadmill walking. Eleven subjects walked at their preferred walking speed for 10 min, and SaEn was calculated on sagittal plane hip, knee, and ankle angle signals extracted from 50, 100, 200, 300, and 400 strides at sampling frequencies of 60, 120, 240, and 480 Hz. Increase in sampling frequency decreased the SaEn significantly for the three joints. The number of included strides had no effect on the SaEn calculated on the hip joint angle and only limited effect on the SaEn calculated on the knee and ankle joint signals. The present study suggests that the number of data points within each stride to a greater extent determines the size of the SaEn compared to the number of strides and emphasizes the use of a fixed number of data points within each stride when applying SaEn to lower limb joint angles during walking. The Influence of Attentional Focus on Balance Control over Seven Days of Training

This study examined the training effect of attentional focus (external focus, internal focus, or no focus instructions) on a dynamic balance task. Participants completed baseline balance testing, seven consecutive days of dynamic balance board training, and retention testing 24 hours after the last session. The novel finding of this study was the presence of a training effect on balance control when adopting an external focus relative to an internal focus or no focus instructions. Further, we report the unique observation that more patterned behavior was adopted regardless of the focus instructions. These findings provide insight into how instructions can be altered to enhance human balance control and complement the constrained-action hypothesis.

Frequency-Specific Fractal Analysis of Postural Control Accounts for Control Strategies

Diverse indicators of postural control in Humans have been explored for decades, mostly based on the trajectory of the center-of-pressure. Classical approaches focus on variability, based on the notion that if a posture is too variable, the subject is not stable. Going deeper, an improved understanding of underlying physiology has been gained from studying variability in different frequency ranges, pointing to specific short-loops (proprioception), and long-loops (visuo-vestibular) in neural control. More recently, fractal analyses have proliferated and become useful additional metrics of postural control. They allowed identifying two scaling phenomena, respectively in short and long timescales. Here, we show that one of the most widely used methods for fractal analysis, Detrended Fluctuation Analysis, could be enhanced to account for scalings on specific frequency ranges. By computing and filtering a bank of synthetic fractal signals, we established how scaling analysis can be focused on specific frequency components. We called the obtained method Frequency-specific Fractal Analysis (FsFA) and used it to associate the two scaling phenomena of postural control to proprioceptive-based control loop and visuo-vestibular based control loop. After that, convincing arguments of method validity came from an application on the study of unaltered vs. altered postural control in athletes. Overall, the analysis suggests that at least two timescales contribute to postural control: a velocity-based control in short timescales relying on proprioceptive sensors, and a position-based control in longer timescales with visuo-vestibular sensors, which is a brand-new vision of postural control. Frequency-specific scaling exponents are promising markers of control strategies in Humans.

Transitions in persistence of postural dynamics depend on the velocity and structure of postural perturbations

The sensorimotor system prefers sway velocity information when maintaining upright posture. Sway velocity has a unique characteristic of being persistent on a short time-scale and anti-persistent on a longer time-scale. The time where the transition from persistence to anti-persistence occurs provides information about how sway velocity is controlled. It is, however, not clear what factors affect shifts in this transition point. This research investigated postural responses to support surface movements of different temporal correlations and movement velocities. Participants stood on a force platform that was translated according to three different levels of temporal correlation. White noise had no correlation, pink noise had moderate correlation, and sine wave movements had very strong correlation. Each correlation structure was analyzed at five different average movement velocities (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 cm·s^-1), as well as one trial of quiet stance. Center of pressure velocity was analyzed using fractal analysis to determine the transition from persistent to anti-persistent behavior, as well as the strength of persistence. As movement velocity increased, the time to transition became longer for the sine wave and shorter for the white and pink noise movements. Likewise, during the persistent time-scale, the sine wave resulted in the strongest correlation, while white and pink noise had weaker correlations. At the highest three movement velocities, the strength of persistence was lower for the white noise compared to pink noise movements. These results demonstrate that the predictability and velocity of support surface oscillations affect the time-scale threshold between persistent and anti-persistent postural responses. Consequently, whether a feedforward or feedback control is utilized for appropriate postural responses may also be determined by the predictability and velocity of environmental stimuli. The study provides new insight into flexibility and adaptability in postural control. This information has implications for the design of rehabilitative protocols in neuromuscular control.

Effects of visual and cognitive interference on joint contributions in perturbed standing: a temporal and spectral analysis

Postural balance requires using joint strategies which may be changed from normal conditions by interfering with the sensory information. The goal of the present study was to quantitatively evaluate the role of the joint mechanisms during perturbed stance. Visual and cognitive interference was imposed to sixteen healthy young males under rotational toes-down or up perturbations. Power spectral analysis was employed to distinguish the joint contribution and their in- or out-phase co-works. Results showed that addition of cognitive loads reduce the stability by increasing the center of mass (CoM) power to three times greater. Besides the CoM, the knee and hip powers were also significantly enhanced by the cognitive loads (p < .004), but the ankle was not influenced by cognition involvement (p > .05). Elimination of the vision had lower effect on the time and spectral functions of the knee and hip while the ankle rotations were increased due to the lack of visual feedback (p = .001). The toes-down perturbations resulted in more prominent contribution of the knee while the toes-up evoked the hip joint to keep the balance more than the other joints. Addition of the cognitive loads hindered the reactions of the joint mechanisms and vision caused more conservative responses of the joints.
