Intra-trunk and arm coordination displayed by Olympic rowing athletes

The purpose was to assess the intra-trunk and arm coordination of Olympic athletes during rowing on an ergometer. Rowing was performed at three stroke rates (18, 26, and 32 strokes/min). The sagittal plane motions of trunk segments and upper arm were collected for 59 Olympic athletes (32 females and 27 males) from the Chinese National Rowing Team. The coupling angles between the three pairs of segments (lumbar-pelvis, thorax-lumbar, upper arm-thorax) were generated using a vector coding method. The coupling angles were classified: in-phase, anti-phase, superior-phase, and inferior-phase. Three-way, mixed-model ANOVA were used to test the time spent in each coordination pattern. The trunk segments and upper arms demonstrated an in-phase coordination pattern for most of the time. During the drive phase, the time spent in in-phase was increased at higher stroke rates. Athletes are encouraged to use this in-phase pattern, especially between the pelvis and lumbar spine during training with high demands of stroke repetitions or time. During the recovery phase, the trunk segments were rotating mostly in-phase whereas the upper arm was flexing dominantly to maintain stroke length at higher stroke rates. Female and male rowers exhibited similar intra-trunk coordination patterns except for the upper arm-thorax pair.

Alcohol consumption and the risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality-a linear and nonlinear Mendelian randomization study

BACKGROUND

Many observational studies support light-to-moderate alcohol intake as potentially protective against premature death. We used a genetic approach to evaluate the linear and nonlinear relationships between alcohol consumption and mortality from different underlying causes.

METHODS

We used data from 278 093 white-British UK Biobank participants, aged 37-73 years at recruitment and with data on alcohol intake, genetic variants, and mortality. Habitual alcohol consumption was instrumented by 94 variants. Linear Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were conducted using five complementary approaches, and nonlinear MR analyses by the doubly-ranked method.

RESULTS

There were 20 834 deaths during the follow-up (median 12.6 years). In conventional analysis, the association between alcohol consumption and mortality outcomes was 'J-shaped'. In contrast, MR analyses supported a positive linear association with premature mortality, with no evidence for curvature (Pnonlinearity ≥ 0.21 for all outcomes). The odds ratio [OR] for each standard unit increase in alcohol intake was 1.27 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.16-1.39) for all-cause mortality, 1.30 (95% CI 1.10-1.53) for cardiovascular disease, 1.20 (95% CI 1.08-1.33) for cancer, and 2.06 (95% CI 1.36-3.12) for digestive disease mortality. These results were consistent across pleiotropy-robust methods. There was no clear evidence for an association between alcohol consumption and mortality from respiratory diseases or COVID-19 (1.32, 95% CI 0.96-1.83 and 1.46, 95% CI 0.99-2.16, respectively; Pnonlinearity ≥ 0.21).

CONCLUSION

Higher levels of genetically predicted alcohol consumption had a strong linear association with an increased risk of premature mortality with no evidence for any protective benefit at modest intake levels.

Nonlinear Analysis of the Hand and Foot Force-Time Profiles in the Four Competitive Swimming Strokes

Human locomotion on water depends on the force produced by the swimmer to propel the body forward. Performance of highly complex motor tasks like swimming can yield minor variations that only nonlinear analysis can be sensitive enough to detect. The purpose of the present study was to examine the nonlinear properties of the hand/feet forces and describe their variations across the four competitive swimming strokes performing segmental and full-body swimming. Swimmers performed all-out bouts of 25 m in the four swimming strokes, swimming the full-body stroke, with the arm-pull only and with the leg kicking only. Hand/foot force and swimming velocity were measured. The Higuchi's fractal dimension (HFD) and sample entropy (SampEn) were used for the nonlinear analysis of force and velocity. Both the arm-pull and leg kicking alone were found to produce similar peak and mean hand/foot forces as swimming the full-body stroke. Hand force was more complex in breaststroke and butterfly stroke; conversely, kicking conditions were more complex in front crawl and backstroke. Moreover, the arm-pull and kicking alone tended to be more complex (higher HFD) but more predictable (lower SampEn) than while swimming the full-body stroke. There was no loss of force production from segmental swimming to the full-body counterpart. In conclusion, the number of segments in action influences the nonlinear behavior of the force produced and, when combining the four limbs, the complexity of the hand/foot force tends to decrease.

Measuring Real-Time Medication Effects From Electroencephalography

PURPOSE

Evaluating the effects of antiseizure medication (ASM) on patients with epilepsy remains a slow and challenging process. Quantifiable noninvasive markers that are measurable in real-time and provide objective and useful information could guide clinical decision-making. We examined whether the effect of ASM on patients with epilepsy can be quantitatively measured in real-time from EEGs.

METHODS

This retrospective analysis was conducted on 67 patients in the long-term monitoring unit at Boston Children's Hospital. Two 30-second EEG segments were selected from each patient premedication and postmedication weaning for analysis. Nonlinear measures including entropy and recurrence quantitative analysis values were computed for each segment and compared before and after medication weaning.

RESULTS

Our study found that ASM effects on the brain were measurable by nonlinear recurrence quantitative analysis on EEGs. Highly significant differences ( P < 1e-11) were found in several nonlinear measures within the seizure zone in response to antiseizure medication. Moreover, the size of the medication effect correlated with a patient's seizure frequency, seizure localization, number of medications, and reported seizure frequency reduction on medication.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings show the promise of digital biomarkers to measure medication effects and epileptogenicity.

Modifications of long-term heart rate variability produced in an experimental model of diet-induced metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been linked to a higher prevalence of cardiac arrhythmias, the most frequent being atrial fibrillation, but the mechanisms are not well understood. One possible underlying mechanism may be an abnormal modulation of autonomic nervous system activity, which can be quantified by analysing heart rate variability (HRV). Our aim was to investigate the modifications of long-term HRV in an experimental model of diet-induced MetS to identify the early changes in HRV and the link between autonomic dysregulation and MetS components. NZW rabbits were randomly assigned to control (n = 10) or MetS (n = 10) groups, fed 28 weeks with high-fat, high-sucrose diet. 24-hour recordings were used to analyse HRV at week 28 using time-domain, frequency-domain and nonlinear analyses. Time-domain analysis showed a decrease in RR interval and triangular index (Ti). In the frequency domain, we found a decrease in the low frequency band. Nonlinear analyses showed a decrease in DFA-α1 and DFA-α2 (detrended fluctuations analysis) and maximum multiscale entropy. The strongest association between HRV parameters and markers of MetS was found between Ti and mean arterial pressure, and Ti and left atrial diameter, which could point towards the initial changes induced by the autonomic imbalance in MetS.

Using Nonlinear Kinematic Parameters as a Means of Predicting Motion Sickness in Real-Time in Virtual Environments

OBJECTIVE

This article presents two studies (one simulation and one pilot) that assess a custom computer algorithm designed to predict motion sickness in real-time.

BACKGROUND

Virtual reality has a wide range of applications; however, many users experience visually induced motion sickness. Previous research has demonstrated that changes in kinematic (behavioral) parameters are predictive of motion sickness. However, there has not been research demonstrating that these measures can be utilized in real-time applications.

METHOD

Two studies were performed to assess an algorithm designed to predict motion sickness in real-time. Study 1 was a simulation study that used data from Smart et al. (2014). Study 2 employed the algorithm on 28 new participants' motion while exposed to virtual motion.

RESULTS

Study 1 revealed that the algorithm was able to classify motion sick participants with 100% accuracy. Study 2 revealed that the algorithm could predict if a participant would become motion sick with 57% accuracy.

CONCLUSION

The results of the present study suggest that the motion sickness prediction algorithm can predict if an individual will experience motion sickness but needs further refinement to improve performance.

APPLICATION

The algorithm could be used for a wide array of VR devices to predict likelihood of motion sickness with enough time to intervene.

A biomarker discovery framework for childhood anxiety

Introduction

Anxiety is the most common manifestation of psychopathology in youth, negatively affecting academic, social, and adaptive functioning and increasing risk for mental health problems into adulthood. Anxiety disorders are diagnosed only after clinical symptoms emerge, potentially missing opportunities to intervene during critical early prodromal periods. In this study, we used a new empirical approach to extracting nonlinear features of the electroencephalogram (EEG), with the goal of discovering differences in brain electrodynamics that distinguish children with anxiety disorders from healthy children. Additionally, we examined whether this approach could distinguish children with externalizing disorders from healthy children and children with anxiety.

Methods

We used a novel supervised tensor factorization method to extract latent factors from repeated multifrequency nonlinear EEG measures in a longitudinal sample of children assessed in infancy and at ages 3, 5, and 7 years of age. We first examined the validity of this method by showing that calendar age is highly correlated with latent EEG complexity factors (r = 0.77). We then computed latent factors separately for distinguishing children with anxiety disorders from healthy controls using a 5-fold cross validation scheme and similarly for distinguishing children with externalizing disorders from healthy controls.

Results

We found that latent factors derived from EEG recordings at age 7 years were required to distinguish children with an anxiety disorder from healthy controls; recordings from infancy, 3 years, or 5 years alone were insufficient. However, recordings from two (5, 7 years) or three (3, 5, 7 years) recordings gave much better results than 7 year recordings alone. Externalizing disorders could be detected using 3- and 5 years EEG data, also giving better results with two or three recordings than any single snapshot. Further, sex assigned at birth was an important covariate that improved accuracy for both disorder groups, and birthweight as a covariate modestly improved accuracy for externalizing disorders. Recordings from infant EEG did not contribute to the classification accuracy for either anxiety or externalizing disorders.

Conclusion

This study suggests that latent factors extracted from EEG recordings in childhood are promising candidate biomarkers for anxiety and for externalizing disorders if chosen at appropriate ages.

Calculating sample entropy from isometric torque signals: methodological considerations and recommendations

We investigated the effect of different sampling frequencies, input parameters and observation times for sample entropy (SaEn) calculated on torque data recorded from a submaximal isometric contraction. Forty-six participants performed sustained isometric knee flexion at 20% of their maximal contraction level and torque data was sampled at 1,000 Hz for 180 s. Power spectral analysis was used to determine the appropriate sampling frequency. The time series were downsampled to 750, 500, 250, 100, 50, and 25 Hz to investigate the effect of different sampling frequency. Relative parameter consistency was investigated using combinations of vector lengths of two and three and tolerance limits of 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.35, and 0.4, and data lengths between 500 and 18,000 data points. The effect of different observations times was evaluated using Bland-Altman plot for observations times between 5 and 90 s. SaEn increased at sampling frequencies below 100 Hz and was unaltered above 250 Hz. In agreement with the power spectral analysis, this advocates for a sampling frequency between 100 and 250 Hz. Relative consistency was observed across the tested parameters and at least 30 s of observation time was required for a valid calculation of SaEn from torque data.

Elasto-Kinematics and Instantaneous Invariants of Compliant Mechanisms Based on Flexure Hinges

The kinematic synthesis of compliant mechanisms based on flexure hinges is not an easy task. A commonly used method is the equivalent rigid model, which involves replacing the flexure hinges with rigid bars connected with lumped hinges using the already known methods of synthesis. This way, albeit simpler, hides some interesting issues. This paper addresses the elasto-kinematics and instantaneous invariants of flexure hinges with a direct approach, making use of a nonlinear model to predict their behaviour. The differential equations that govern the nonlinear geometric response are given in a comprehensive form and are solved for flexure hinges with constant sections. The solution to the nonlinear model is then used to obtain an analytical description of two instantaneous invariants: the centre of instantaneous rotation (c.i.r.) and the inflection circle. The main result is that the c.i.r. evolution, namely the fixed polode, is not conservative but is loading-path dependent. Consequently, all other instantaneous invariants are loading-path dependent, and the property of instantaneous geometric invariants (independent of the motion time law) can no longer be used. This result is analytically and numerically evidenced. In other words, it is shown that a careful kinematic synthesis of compliant mechanisms cannot be addressed by only considering the kinematics as rigid mechanisms, and it is essential to take into consideration the applied loads and their histories.

Torque Regulation Is Influenced by the Nature of the Isometric Contraction

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of a continuous visual feedback and the isometric contraction nature on the complexity and variability of force. Thirteen healthy and young male adults performed three MVCs followed by three submaximal isometric force tasks at a target force of 40% of their MVC for 30 s, as follows: (i) push isometric task with visual feedback (P_visual); (ii) hold isometric task with visual feedback (H_visual); (iii) hold isometric task without visual feedback (H_non-visual). Force complexity was evaluated through sample entropy (SampEn) of the force output. Force variability was analyzed through the coefficient of variation (CV). Results showed that differences were task-related, with P_visual showing higher complexity (i.e., higher SampEn) and decreased variability (i.e., lower CV) when compared with the remaining tasks. Additionally, no significant differences were found between the two hold isometric force tasks (i.e., no influence of visual feedback). Our results are promising as we showed these two isometric tasks to induce different motor control strategies. Furthermore, we demonstrated that visual feedback's influence is also dependent on the type of isometric task. These findings should motivate researchers and physiologists to shift training paradigms and incorporate different force control evaluation tasks.

Heart rate variability in different sleep stages is associated with metabolic function and glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Introduction: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays an important role in the exchange of metabolic information between organs and regulation on peripheral metabolism with obvious circadian rhythm in a healthy state. Sleep, a vital brain phenomenon, significantly affects both ANS and metabolic function. Objectives: This study investigated the relationships among sleep, ANS and metabolic function in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), to support the evaluation of ANS function through heart rate variability (HRV) metrics, and the determination of the correlated underlying autonomic pathways, and help optimize the early prevention, post-diagnosis and management of T2DM and its complications. Materials and methods: A total of 64 volunteered inpatients with T2DM took part in this study. 24-h electrocardiogram (ECG), clinical indicators of metabolic function, sleep quality and sleep staging results of T2DM patients were monitored. Results: The associations between sleep quality, 24-h/awake/sleep/sleep staging HRV and clinical indicators of metabolic function were analyzed. Significant correlations were found between sleep quality and metabolic function (|r| = 0.386 ± 0.062, p < 0.05); HRV derived ANS function showed strengthened correlations with metabolic function during sleep period (|r| = 0.474 ± 0.100, p < 0.05); HRV metrics during sleep stages coupled more tightly with clinical indicators of metabolic function [in unstable sleep: |r| = 0.453 ± 0.095, p < 0.05; in stable sleep: |r| = 0.463 ± 0.100, p < 0.05; in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep: |r| = 0.453 ± 0.082, p < 0.05], and showed significant associations with glycemic control in non-linear analysis [fasting blood glucose within 24 h of admission (admission FBG), |r| = 0.420 ± 0.064, p < 0.05; glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), |r| = 0.417 ± 0.016, p < 0.05]. Conclusions: HRV metrics during sleep period play more distinct role than during awake period in investigating ANS dysfunction and metabolism in T2DM patients, and sleep rhythm based HRV analysis should perform better in ANS and metabolic function assessment, especially for glycemic control in non-linear analysis among T2DM patients.

Mental fatigue decreases complexity: Evidence from multiscale entropy analysis of instantaneous frequency variation in alpha rhythm

Mental fatigue (MF) jeopardizes performance and safety through a variety of cognitive impairments and according to the complexity loss theory, should represent "complexity loss" in electroencephalogram (EEG). However, the studies are few and inconsistent concerning the relationship between MF and loss of complexity, probably because of the susceptibility of brain waves to noise. In this study, MF was induced in thirteen male college students by a simulated flight task. Before and at the end of the task, spontaneous EEG and auditory steady-state response (ASSR) were recorded and instantaneous frequency variation (IFV) in alpha rhythm was extracted and analyzed by multiscale entropy (MSE) analysis. The results show that there were significant differences in IFV in alpha rhythm either from spontaneous EEG or from ASSR for all subjects. Therefore, the proposed method can be effective in revealing the complexity loss caused by MF in spontaneous EEG and ASSR, which may serve as a promising analyzing method to mark mild mental impairments.

Postural Sway and Muscle Activity Dynamics of Upright Standing on Sloped Surfaces

During upright standing, individuals often use co-contraction muscle activity at the ankle joint when encountering increased postural difficulty; however, this strategy has been shown to be maladaptive. The purpose of the current investigation was to examine the effect of sloped standing on postural sway and muscle co-contraction at the ankle joint as a function of postural difficulty. Twelve young (21.67 ± 1.11 years) adults performed upright standing on flat, declined, and inclined support surfaces. Center of pressure displacements indexed postural sway while electromyography data were collected for the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius medialis muscles. A co-contraction index and a nonlinear coupling metric (cross-approximate entropy) were computed between ankle dorsiflexor and plantar flexor muscles (tibialis anterior/gastrocnemius medialis) activity. The results showed that higher degrees of postural difficulty led to increased amounts of sway as well as increased sway regularity. Lower co-contraction index was observed for higher degrees of postural difficulty; however, increased dynamic coupling occurred with deviations from the flat standing condition. Overall, increased postural difficulty as manipulated by sloped standing (in either inclined or declined conditions) resulted in individuals adopting a more regular sway trajectory that may be due, in part, to a stronger dynamic coupling strategy occurring at the neuromuscular level.

Heart rate variability and the dawn of complex physiological signal analysis: methodological and clinical perspectives

Spontaneous beat-to-beat variations of heart rate (HR) have intrigued scientists and casual observers for centuries; however, it was not until the 1970s that investigators began to apply engineering tools to the analysis of these variations, fostering the field we now know as heart rate variability or HRV. Since then, the field has exploded to not only include a wide variety of traditional linear time and frequency domain applications for the HR signal, but also more complex linear models that include additional physiological parameters such as respiration, arterial blood pressure, central venous pressure and autonomic nerve signals. Most recently, the field has branched out to address the nonlinear components of many physiological processes, the complexity of the systems being studied and the important issue of specificity for when these tools are applied to individuals. When the impact of all these developments are combined, it seems likely that the field of HRV will soon begin to realize its potential as an important component of the toolbox used for diagnosis and therapy of patients in the clinic. Buckling Analysis of a Large Shelter with Composites

We present here linear and nonlinear finite element analyses of a newly designed deployable rapid assembly shelter (DRASH J) manufactured by DHS Systems. The structural analysis is carried out in three stages. Firstly, single composite tubes (struts) under three-point bending are modeled with five layers of orthotropic materials in three different orientations and the simulation results are compared with the actual test data for validation. Secondly, a comprehensive structural model for the entire shelter is constructed with the consideration of two types of strut scissor points, namely natural and forced scissor (crossing) points, as well as partial-fixed hub joints, which allow rotations along individual hub slots (grooves). Finally, a simplified structural model is created by introducing fixed joints for the scissor points as well as rigid links for the hubs. With sufficient verifications with experiments and different modeling methods, linear and nonlinear finite element analyses are then carried out for both the comprehensive and simplified shelter models. Based on the simulation results, we are able to identify a few critical issues pertaining to proper design and modifications of such shelter systems, such as various end wall supports pertaining to the overall structural stability.

Application of nonlinear analysis for the assessment of gait in patients with Parkinson's disease

BACKGROUND

Gait can be affected by diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD), which lead to alterations like shuffle gait or loss of balance. PD diagnosis is based on subjective measures to generate a score using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). To improve clinical assessment accuracy, gait analysis can utilise linear and nonlinear methods. A nonlinear method called the Lyapunov exponent (LE) is being used to identify chaos in dynamic systems. This article presents an application of LE for diagnosing PD.

OBJECTIVE

The objectives were to use the largest Lyapunov exponents (LaLyEx), sample entropy (SampEn) and root mean square (RMS) to assess the gait of subjects diagnosed with PD; to verify the applicability of these parameters to distinguish between people with PD and healthy controls (CO); and to differentiate subjects within the PD group according to the UPDRS assessment.

METHODS

The subjects were divided into the CO group (n= 12) and the PD group (n= 14). The PD group was also divided according to the UPDRS score: UPDRS 0 (n= 7) and UPDRS 1 (n= 7). Kinematic data of lower limbs were measured using inertial measurement units (IMU) and nonlinear parameters (LaLyEx, SampEn and RMS) were calculated.

RESULTS

There were significant differences between the CO and PD groups for RMS, SampEn and the LaLyEx. After dividing the PD group according to the UPDRS score, there were significant differences in LaLyEx and RMS.

CONCLUSIONS

The selected parameters can be used to distinguish people with PD from CO subjects, and separate people with PD according to the UPDRS score.

Dynamic Changes and Temporal Association with Ambient Temperatures: Nonlinear Analyses of Stroke Events from a National Health Insurance Database

Background: The associations between ambient temperatures and stroke are still uncertain, although they have been widely studied. Furthermore, the impact of latitudes or climate zones on these associations is still controversial. The Tropic of Cancer passes through the middle of Taiwan and divides it into subtropical and tropical areas. Therefore, the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database can be used to study the influence of latitudes on the association between ambient temperature and stroke events. Methods: In this study, we retrieved daily stroke events from 2010 to 2015 in the New Taipei and Taipei Cities (the subtropical areas) and Kaohsiung City (the tropical area) from the National Health Insurance Research Database. Overall, 70,338 and 125,163 stroke events, including ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage, in Kaohsiung City and the Taipei Area were retrieved from the database, respectively. We also collected daily mean temperatures from the Taipei and Kaohsiung weather stations during the same period. The data were decomposed by ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) into several intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). There were consistent 6-period IMFs with intervals around 360 days in most decomposed data. Spearman’s rank correlation test showed moderate-to-strong correlations between the relevant IMFs of daily temperatures and events of stroke in both areas, which were higher in the northern area compared with those in the southern area. Conclusions: EEMD is a useful tool to demonstrate the regularity of stroke events and their associations with dynamic changes of the ambient temperature. Our results clearly demonstrate the temporal association between the ambient temperature and daily events of ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage. It will contribute to planning a healthcare system for stroke seasonally. Further well-designed prospective studies are needed to elucidate the meaning of these associations.

Effects of ECG Data Length on Heart Rate Variability among Young Healthy Adults

The relationship between the robustness of HRV derived by linear and nonlinear methods to the required minimum data lengths has yet to be well understood. The normal electrocardiography (ECG) data of 14 healthy volunteers were applied to 34 HRV measures using various data lengths, and compared with the most prolonged (2000 R peaks or 750 s) by using the Mann-Whitney U test, to determine the 0.05 level of significance. We found that SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50, normalized LF, the ratio of LF and HF, and SD1 of the Poincaré plot could be adequately computed by small data size (60-100 R peaks). In addition, parameters of RQA did not show any significant differences among 60 and 750 s. However, longer data length (1000 R peaks) is recommended to calculate most other measures. The DFA and Lyapunov exponent might require an even longer data length to show robust results. Conclusions: Our work suggests the optimal minimum data sizes for different HRV measures which can potentially improve the efficiency and save the time and effort for both patients and medical care providers.

Structural Behavior of High-Strength Concrete Slabs Reinforced with GFRP Bars

In this manuscript, structural testing was conducted on high-strength concrete slab specimens to investigate the behavior of such specimens when reinforced with a locally produced GFRP reinforcement. Subsequently, a finite element model (FEM) was constructed and validated against the experimental results. In the experimental phase, a total of eleven specimens (nine were reinforced with GFRP, while two were reinforced with conventional steel) were constructed and tested. The slabs dimensions are 700 mm × 1750 mm with variable thickness from 100 mm to 150 mm and different reinforcement ratios using different diameters. The structural behavior of the tested slabs was investigated in terms of ultimate load, ultimate deflection, load–deflection relationship, and crack pattern. Additionally, a nonlinear finite element model using the software ANSYS 2019-R1 was constructed to simulate the structural behavior of slabs reinforced with GFRP bars. The results obtained from the finite element analysis are compared with experimental results. The outcomes showed that the contribution of GFRP rebars in concrete slabs improved slab ductility and exhibited higher deflection when compared with traditional steel rebars. Good agreement between experimental and nonlinear analysis was obtained.

Development of postural stability in children with autism spectrum disorder: a cross-sectional study

The purpose was to investigate the effects of age on postural stability for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Twenty-nine children with mild ASD were assigned into one of the three groups: 6–8 years (U8), 9–11 years (U11) and 12–14 years (U14). Participants stood barefoot with both feet on a force platform and maintained stationary for 15 seconds during eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions. Center of pressure data were collected and variables were calculated, including displacements, total distances, sway areas, and sample entropy. The variables were compared among the three groups using a mixed-model ANOVA. The age group effect was significant for mediolateral center of pressure displacement (p = 0.04) and sway distance (p = 0.02). Post-hoc comparisons revealed that U8 exhibited greater mediolateral displacement and total distance compared to U14, regardless of test conditions. The U14 group exhibited improved mediolateral postural stability compared to U8, whereas no differences were found between U8 and U11 or between U11 and U14. This may suggest that children with ASD could slowly develop postural stability but only demonstrate significant changes over a long period of time. Early intervention programs aimed to improve complexity of postural control could be beneficial.

Nonlinear Phase Synchronization Analysis of EEG Signals in Amnesic Mild Cognitive Impairment with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Studying the nonlinear synchronization of electroencephalogram (EEG) in type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) to find the EEG characteristics related to cognitive impairment is beneficial to the early prevention and diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment. Correlation between probabilities of recurrence (CPR) is a nonlinear phase synchronization method based on recurrence and recurrence probability, which had shown its superiority in detecting epilepsy. In this study, CPR method was used for the first time to analyze the synchronization of eye-closed resting EEG signals with T2DM. The 27 participants were divided into amnesic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) group (17 case) and control group (10 cases with age and education matched). The CPR values in two groups were statistically analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test, and the correlation between EEG synchronization and cognitive function was studied by Spearman's correlation. The results showed that aMCI group had lower CPR values at each electrode pair than control group, and two groups had decreased CPR values with the increase of the spatial distance of the electrode pair in inter hemispheric. The CPR values were significantly different in frontal, parietal and temporal regions in intra hemispheric between two groups. The CPR values of C3-F7, F4-C4 and FP2-T6 were significantly positively correlated with the MOCA values. This study showed that the synchronization values of EEG signals obtained by the CPR method were significantly different between aMCI and control group, and they were the EEG characteristics associated with cognitive impairment in T2DM.

Heart Rate Variability During a Standard Dive: A Role for Inspired Oxygen Pressure?

Introduction: Heart rate variability (HRV) during underwater diving has been infrequently investigated because of environment limitations and technical challenges. This study aims to analyze HRV changes while diving at variable hyperoxia when using open circuit (OC) air diving apparatus or at constant hyperoxia using a closed-circuit rebreather (CCR). We used HRV analysis in time and frequency domain adding nonlinear analysis which is more adapted to short-time analysis and less dependent on respiratory rate (Sinus respiratory arrhythmia). Materials and Methods: 18 males, 12 using OC (30 mfw for 20 min) and 6 using CCR (30 mfw for 40 min.). HRV was recorded using a polar recorder. Four samples of R-R intervals representing the dive were saved for HRV analysis. Standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN), square root of the mean squared differences between successive RR intervals (rMSSD), and average RR intervals (RR) in time-domain; low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF) in frequency domain were investigated. Nonlinear analysis included fractal dimension (FrD). Results: SDNN and rMSSD were significantly increased during descent and at depth with OC, not with CCR. Mean RR interval was longer at depth with OC, but only during ascent and after the dive with CCR. HF power was higher than baseline during the descent both with OC and CCR and remained elevated at depth for OC. The LF/HF ratio was significantly lower than baseline for descent and at depth with both OC and CCR. After 30 min of recovery, the LF/HF ratio was higher than baseline with both OC and CCR. Nonlinear analysis detected differences at depth for OC and CCR. Discussion: Increased parasympathetic tone was present during diving. RR duration, SDNN; rMSSD, HF spectral power all increased during the dive above pre-dive levels. Conversely, HF power decreased (and the LF/HF increased) 30 min after the dive. Using FrD, a difference was detected between OC and CCR, which may be related to differences in partial pressure of oxygen breathed during the dive.

Theoretical Local Buckling Behavior of Thin-Walled UHPC Flanges Subjected to Pure Compressions

To enhance structural performance of concrete and reduce its self-weight, ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) with superior structural performance has been developed. As UHPC members with 180 MPa or above of the compressive strength can be designed, a rational assessment of thin-walled UHPC structural member may be required to prevent unexpected buckling failure that has not been considered while designing conventional concrete members. In this study, theoretical local buckling behavior of the thin-walled UHPC flanges was investigated using geometrical and material nonlinear analysis with imperfections (GMNIA). For the failure criteria of UHPC, a concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) model was applied to the analysis. Additionally, an elastic-perfectly plastic material model for steel materials was considered as a reference to establish differences in local buckling behavior between the UHPC and steel flanges. Finite element approaches were compared and verified based on test data in the literature. Finally, this study offers several important findings on theoretical local buckling and local bending behavior of UHPC flanges. The inelastic local buckling behavior of UHPC flanges was mainly affected by crack propagation due to its low tensile strength. Based on this study, possibility of the local buckling of UHPC flanges was discussed.

Age-Related Changes in Standing Balance in Preschoolers Using Traditional and Nonlinear Methods

Considerable disagreement exists on the linearity of the development of standing balance in children. This study aimed to use different traditional and nonlinear methods to investigate age-related changes in standing balance in preschoolers. A sample of 118 preschoolers took part in this study. A force platform was used to record the center of pressure during standing balance over 15 s in three conditions: eyes open, eyes closed, and/or head extended backward. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), and traditional measures were used to evaluate standing balance. The main results are as follows: (1) Higher range and SD in the anterior-posterior (AP) direction were observed for 5-year-old than for 4-year-old children, while higher DFA coefficient (at shorter time scales) and higher determinism and laminarity in the AP direction were found for 5-year-old children compared to 3- and 4-year-old children; and (2) as sensory conditions became more challenging, all traditional measures increased and DFA coefficients (at shorter and longer time scales) decreased in the AP and mediolateral directions, while determinism and laminarity significantly declined in the AP direction. In conclusion, although increased postural sway, 5-year-old preschool children's balance performance improved, and their control strategy changed significantly compared with the younger preschoolers. Sensory perturbation (eye closure and/or head extension) changed preschoolers' balance performance and control strategy. Moreover, both traditional and nonlinear methods provided complementary information on the control of standing balance in preschoolers.

Joint Coordination and Stiffness During Landing in Individuals With Chronic Ankle Instability

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of chronic ankle instability (CAI) on lower-extremity joint coordination and stiffness during landing. A total of 21 female participants with CAI and 21 pair-matched healthy controls participated in the study. Lower-extremity joint kinematics were collected using a 7-camera motion capture system, and ground reaction forces were collected using 2 force plates during drop landings. Coupling angles were computed based on the vector coding method to assess joint coordination. Coupling angles were compared between the CAI and control groups using circular Watson-Williams tests. Joint stiffness was compared between the groups using independent t tests. Participants with CAI exhibited strategies involving altered joint coordination including a knee flexion dominant pattern during 30% and 70% of their landing phase and a more in-phase motion pattern between the knee and hip joints during 30% and 40% and 90% and 100% of the landing phase. In addition, increased ankle inversion and knee flexion stiffness were observed in the CAI group. These altered joint coordination and stiffness could be considered as a protective strategy utilized to effectively absorb energy, stabilize the body and ankle, and prevent excessive ankle inversion. However, this strategy could result in greater mechanical demands on the knee joint.

Assessment of Nocturnal Autonomic Cardiac Imbalance in Positional Obstructive Sleep Apnea. A Multiscale Nonlinear Approach

Positional obstructive sleep apnea (POSA) is a major phenotype of sleep apnea. Supine-predominant positional patients are frequently characterized by milder symptoms and less comorbidity due to a lower age, body mass index, and overall apnea-hypopnea index. However, the bradycardia-tachycardia pattern during apneic events is known to be more severe in the supine position, which could affect the cardiac regulation of positional patients. This study aims at characterizing nocturnal heart rate modulation in the presence of POSA in order to assess potential differences between positional and non-positional patients. Patients showing clinical symptoms of suffering from a sleep-related breathing disorder performed unsupervised portable polysomnography (PSG) and simultaneous nocturnal pulse oximetry (NPO) at home. Positional patients were identified according to the Amsterdam POSA classification (APOC) criteria. Pulse rate variability (PRV) recordings from the NPO readings were used to assess overnight cardiac modulation. Conventional cardiac indexes in the time and frequency domains were computed. Additionally, multiscale entropy (MSE) was used to investigate the nonlinear dynamics of the PRV recordings in POSA and non-POSA patients. A total of 129 patients (median age 56.0, interquartile range (IQR) 44.8-63.0 years, median body mass index (BMI) 27.7, IQR 26.0-31.3 kg/m2) were classified as POSA (37 APOC I, 77 APOC II, and 15 APOC III), while 104 subjects (median age 57.5, IQR 49.0-67.0 years, median BMI 29.8, IQR 26.6-34.7 kg/m2) comprised the non-POSA group. Overnight PRV recordings from positional patients showed significantly higher disorderliness than non-positional subjects in the smallest biological scales of the MSE profile (τ = 1: 0.25, IQR 0.20-0.31 vs. 0.22, IQR 0.18-0.27, p < 0.01) (τ = 2: 0.41, IQR 0.34-0.48 vs. 0.37, IQR 0.29-0.42, p < 0.01). According to our findings, nocturnal heart rate regulation is severely affected in POSA patients, suggesting increased cardiac imbalance due to predominant positional apneas.

Modelling of the Guillotine Cutting Process by Means of a Symmetrical Blade with the Defined Geometry

This paper modelled the cutting process of a bundle consisted of ultra-thin cold-rolled steel sheets using a guillotine. The geometry of a cutting tool with given dimensions was assumed. A bundle of sheets being cut was modelled as deformable, the cutting tool was rigid, and the finite element method along with computer system LS-DYNA was employed. Numerical simulations of the complex state of stress and of the corresponding complex state of strain were carried out. Cutting processes belong to fast changing physical phenomena, and therefore, highly nonlinear dynamical algorithms were applied in order to solve this particular problem. Experimental investigations were also conducted by means of the scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the fracture region consisted of two distinct zones: brittle and ductile separated from each other by the interfacial transition. Morphological features of the brittle, ductile, and the transition regions were identified. The ductile and brittle zones were separated at the depth of ca. 1/5 thickness of the cut steel sheet. Finally, the numerical results obtained by usage of the finite element method as well as experimental ones in the form of microscopic images were compared, showing quite good agreement.

Selected Concrete Models Studied Using Willam's Test

Willam’s test is a quick numerical benchmark in tension–shear regime, which can be used to verify inelastic (quasi-brittle) material models at the point level. Its sequence consists of two separate steps: uniaxial tension accompanied with contraction—until the tensile strength is attained; and next for softening (cracking) of the material—tension in two directions together with shear. A rotation of axes of principal strains and principal stresses is provoked in the second stage. That kind of process occurs during the analysis of real concrete structures, so a correct response of the material model at the point level is needed. Some familiar concrete models are selected to perform Willam’s test in the paper: concrete damaged plasticity and concrete smeared cracking—distributed in the commercial ABAQUS software, scalar damage with coupling to plasticity and isotropic damage—both implemented in the FEAP package. After a brief review of the theory, computations for each model are discussed. Passing or failing Willam’s test by the above models is concluded based on their results, indicating restrictions of their use for finite element computations of concrete structures with predominant mixed-mode fracture.

Dynamic Pulse Buckling of Composite Stanchions in the Sub-Cargo Floor Area of a Civil Regional Aircraft

This work is focused on the investigation of the structural behavior of a composite floor beam, located in the cargo zone of a civil aircraft, subjected to cyclical low-frequency compressive loads with different amplitudes. In the first stage, the numerical models able to correctly simulate the investigated phenomenon have been defined. Different analyses have been performed, aimed to an exhaustive evaluation of the structural behavior of the test article. In particular, implicit and explicit analyses have been considered to preliminary assess the capabilities of the numerical model. Then, explicit non-linear analyses under time-dependent loads have been considered, to predict the behavior of the composite structure under cyclic loading conditions. According to the present investigation, low-frequency cyclic loads with peak values lower than the static buckling load value are not capable of triggering significant instability.

Youth With Concussion Have Less Adaptable Gait Patterns Than Their Uninjured Peers: Implications for Concussion Management

OBJECTIVE

To compare cross-recurrence quantification analysis measurements obtained during gait between adolescents who sustained a diagnosed concussion within 14 days of assessment and healthy adolescents.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

METHODS

Youth athletes with concussion (n = 43; mean ± SD age, 14.4 ± 2.3 years; 56% female; tested median, 7 days post concussion) and healthy controls (n = 38; age, 14.9 ± 2.0 years; 55% female) completed a single-task and dual-task gait protocol while wearing a set of inertial sensors. We used cross-recurrence quantification analysis techniques to quantify the similarity between accelerations obtained from the sensor on the dorsum of each foot. Four outcome variables were compared between groups: percent determinism, average diagonal-line length, laminarity, and trapping time.

RESULTS

Athletes with concussion had significantly higher percent determinism, laminarity, and trapping time than the control group in single-task and dual-task conditions (P<.05). Gait patterns, when simultaneously completing a secondary cognitive task (dual task), were no different from gait patterns under a single-task condition.

CONCLUSION

Higher percent determinism, laminarity, and trapping time among athletes with concussion suggest that concussion may be associated with a more stuck and predictable gait pattern. These altered movement patterns may be one reason for underlying slower gait speeds that have been observed following concussion. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2020;50(8):438-446. Validation of a Portable Force Plate for Evaluating Postural Sway

Measurements of postural sway are used to assess physiological changes due to therapy or sport training, or to describe group differences based on activity history or disease status. Portable force plates have been widely adopted for this purpose, leading us in this study to validate with linear and nonlinear metrics the posturographic data derived from both a portable plate (Natus) when compared to an in-ground plate (Bertec). Twenty participants stood on each plate for two trials each, with and without a foam perturbation and with and without eyes open on each surface. We calculated measures of path length, range, root mean squares, sample entropy, and correlation dimensions from center of pressure traces on each plate. An intraclass correlation coefficient across trials from each plate in each condition indicated satisfactory overall reliability (ICC consistency), supporting the use of either plate for postural sway research and interventions. Additionally, our results generally supported common validity (ICC absolute agreement), though, the specific degree of similarity differed for each of the tested metrics of postural sway, especially when considering whether or not data was filtered. For situations in which participants cannot visit a laboratory (e.g. performing athletes, community dwelling clinical patients, and virus risk concerns) an in-home portable force plate is a trusted and valuable data collection tool.

fNIRS Complexity Analysis for the Assessment of Motor Imagery and Mental Arithmetic Tasks

Conventional methods for analyzing functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signals primarily focus on characterizing linear dynamics of the underlying metabolic processes. Nevertheless, linear analysis may underrepresent the true physiological processes that fully characterizes the complex and nonlinear metabolic activity sustaining brain function. Although there have been recent attempts to characterize nonlinearities in fNIRS signals in various experimental protocols, to our knowledge there has yet to be a study that evaluates the utility of complex characterizations of fNIRS in comparison to standard methods, such as the mean value of hemoglobin. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the entropy of hemoglobin concentration time series obtained from fNIRS signals and perform a comparitive analysis with standard mean hemoglobin analysis of functional activation. Publicly available data from 29 subjects performing motor imagery and mental arithmetics tasks were exploited for the purpose of this study. The experimental results show that entropy analysis on fNIRS signals may potentially uncover meaningful activation areas that enrich and complement the set identified through a traditional linear analysis.

Pharmacological Modulation of Sleep Homeostasis in Rat: Novel Effects of an mGluR2/3 Antagonist

Increasing vigilance without incurring the negative consequences of extended wakefulness such as daytime sleepiness and cognitive impairment is a major challenge in treating many sleep disorders. The present work compares two closely related mGluR2/3 antagonists LY3020371 and LY341495 with two well-known wake-promoting compounds caffeine and d-amphetamine. Sleep homeostasis properties were explored in male Wistar rats by manipulating levels of wakefulness via (1) physiological sleep restriction (SR), (2) pharmacological action, or (3) a combination of these. A two-phase nonlinear mixed-effects model combining a quadratic and exponential function at an empirically estimated join point allowed the quantification of wake-promoting properties and any subsequent sleep rebound. A simple response latency task (SRLT) following SR assessed functional capacity of sleep-restricted animals treated with our test compounds. Caffeine and d-amphetamine increased wakefulness with a subsequent full recovery of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and were unable to fully reverse SR-induced impairments in SRLT. In contrast, LY3020371 increased wakefulness with no subsequent elevation of NREM sleep, delta power, delta energy, or sleep bout length and count, yet REM sleep recovered above baseline levels. Prior sleep pressure obtained using an SR protocol had no impact on the wake-promoting effect of LY3020371 and NREM sleep rebound remained blocked. Furthermore, LY341495 increased functional capacity across SRLT measures following SR. These results establish the critical role of glutamate in sleep homeostasis and support the existence of independent mechanisms for NREM and REM sleep homeostasis.

Assessment of Airflow and Oximetry Signals to Detect Pediatric Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome Using AdaBoost

The reference standard to diagnose pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) syndrome is an overnight polysomnographic evaluation. When polysomnography is either unavailable or has limited availability, OSA screening may comprise the automatic analysis of a minimum number of signals. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the complementarity of airflow (AF) and oximetry (SpO₂) signals to automatically detect pediatric OSA. Additionally, a secondary goal was to assess the utility of a multiclass AdaBoost classifier to predict OSA severity in children. We extracted the same features from AF and SpO₂ signals from 974 pediatric subjects. We also obtained the 3% Oxygen Desaturation Index (ODI) as a common clinically used variable. Then, feature selection was conducted using the Fast Correlation-Based Filter method and AdaBoost classifiers were evaluated. Models combining ODI 3% and AF features outperformed the diagnostic performance of each signal alone, reaching 0.39 Cohens's kappa in the four-class classification task. OSA vs. No OSA accuracies reached 81.28%, 82.05% and 90.26% in the apnea-hypopnea index cutoffs 1, 5 and 10 events/h, respectively. The most relevant information from SpO₂ was redundant with ODI 3%, and AF was complementary to them. Thus, the joint analysis of AF and SpO₂ enhanced the diagnostic performance of each signal alone using AdaBoost, thereby enabling a potential screening alternative for OSA in children.

Defining the optimal target for anterior thalamic deep brain stimulation in patients with drug-refractory epilepsy

OBJECTIVE

The anterior thalamic nucleus (ATN) is a common target for deep brain stimulation (DBS) for the treatment of drug-refractory epilepsy. However, no atlas-based optimal DBS (active contacts) target within the ATN has been definitively identified. The object of this retrospective study was to analyze the relationship between the active contact location and seizure reduction to establish an atlas-based optimal target for ATN DBS.

METHODS

From among 25 patients who had undergone ATN DBS surgery for drug-resistant epilepsy between 2016 and 2018, those who had follow-up evaluations for more than 1 year were eligible for study inclusion. After an initial stimulation period of 6 months, patients were classified as responsive (≥ 50% median decrease in seizure frequency) or nonresponsive (< 50% median decrease in seizure frequency) to treatment. Stimulation parameters and/or active contact positions were adjusted in nonresponsive patients, and their responsiveness was monitored for at least 1 year. Postoperative CT scans were coregistered nonlinearly with preoperative MR images to determine the center coordinate and atlas-based anatomical localizations of all active contacts in the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) 152 space.

RESULTS

Nineteen patients with drug-resistant epilepsy were followed up for at least a year following bilateral DBS electrode implantation targeting the ATN. Active contacts located more adjacent to the center of gravity of the anterior half of the ATN volume, defined as the anterior center (AC), were associated with greater seizure reduction than those not in this location. Intriguingly, the initially nonresponsive patients could end up with much improved seizure reduction by adjusting the active contacts closer to the AC at the final postoperative follow-up.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with stimulation targeting the AC may have a favorable seizure reduction. Moreover, the authors were able to obtain additional good outcomes after electrode repositioning in the initially nonresponsive patients. Purposeful and strategic trajectory planning to target this optimal region may predict favorable outcomes of ATN DBS.

Augmentation of Dispersion Entropy for Handling Missing and Outlier Samples in Physiological Signal Monitoring

Entropy quantification algorithms are becoming a prominent tool for the physiological monitoring of individuals through the effective measurement of irregularity in biological signals. However, to ensure their effective adaptation in monitoring applications, the performance of these algorithms needs to be robust when analysing time-series containing missing and outlier samples, which are common occurrence in physiological monitoring setups such as wearable devices and intensive care units. This paper focuses on augmenting Dispersion Entropy (DisEn) by introducing novel variations of the algorithm for improved performance in such applications. The original algorithm and its variations are tested under different experimental setups that are replicated across heart rate interval, electroencephalogram, and respiratory impedance time-series. Our results indicate that the algorithmic variations of DisEn achieve considerable improvements in performance while our analysis signifies that, in consensus with previous research, outlier samples can have a major impact in the performance of entropy quantification algorithms. Consequently, the presented variations can aid the implementation of DisEn to physiological monitoring applications through the mitigation of the disruptive effect of missing and outlier samples.

Short-Time Estimation of Fractionation in Atrial Fibrillation with Coarse-Grained Correlation Dimension for Mapping the Atrial Substrate

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is currently the most common cardiac arrhythmia, with catheter ablation (CA) of the pulmonary veins (PV) being its first line therapy. Ablation of complex fractionated atrial electrograms (CFAEs) outside the PVs has demonstrated improved long-term results, but their identification requires a reliable electrogram (EGM) fractionation estimator. This study proposes a technique aimed to assist CA procedures under real-time settings. The method has been tested on three groups of recordings: Group 1 consisted of 24 highly representative EGMs, eight of each belonging to a different AF Type. Group 2 contained the entire dataset of 119 EGMs, whereas Group 3 contained 20 pseudo-real EGMs of the special Type IV AF. Coarse-grained correlation dimension (CGCD) was computed at epochs of 1 s duration, obtaining a classification accuracy of 100% in Group 1 and 84.0–85.7% in Group 2, using 10-fold cross-validation. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis for highly fractionated EGMs, showed 100% specificity and sensitivity in Group 1 and 87.5% specificity and 93.6% sensitivity in Group 2. In addition, 100% of the pseudo-real EGMs were correctly identified as Type IV AF. This method can consistently express the fractionation level of AF EGMs and provides better performance than previous works. Its ability to compute fractionation in short-time can agilely detect sudden changes of AF Types and could be used for mapping the atrial substrate, thus assisting CA procedures under real-time settings for atrial substrate modification.

Complexity of Cardiotocographic Signals as A Predictor of Labor

Prediction of labor is of extreme importance in obstetric care to allow for preventive measures, assuring that both baby and mother have the best possible care. In this work, the authors studied how important nonlinear parameters (entropy and compression) can be as labor predictors. Linear features retrieved from the SisPorto system for cardiotocogram analysis and nonlinear measures were used to predict labor in a dataset of 1072 antepartum tracings, at between 30 and 35 weeks of gestation. Two groups were defined: Group A—fetuses whose traces date was less than one or two weeks before labor, and Group B—fetuses whose traces date was at least one or two weeks before labor. Results suggest that, compared with linear features such as decelerations and variability indices, compression improves labor prediction both within one (C-Statistics of 0.728) and two weeks (C-Statistics of 0.704). Moreover, the correlation between compression and long-term variability was significantly different in groups A and B, denoting that compression and heart rate variability look at different information associated with whether the fetus is closer to or further from labor onset. Nonlinear measures, compression in particular, may be useful in improving labor prediction as a complement to other fetal heart rate features.

Modelling of Guillotine Cutting of a Cold-Rolled Steel Sheet

In this paper, the modelling of a cutting process of a cold-rolled steel sheet using a symmetrical cutting tool is presented. The fast-changing nonlinear dynamic cutting process was elaborated by means of the finite element method and the computer system LS-DYNA. Experimental investigations using scanning electron microscopy were performed and the results are presented in this work. The numerical results were compared with experimental ones. The comparison shows a good agreement between the results obtained by means of numerical modelling and those received from experimental investigations. The numerical simulations of the cutting process and the experimental investigations aimed to understand the mechanism of the cutting process. They serve as a highly professional tool for carrying out research investigating the behavior of complex nonlinear fast-changing dynamical cutting processes in the future.

Complexity of Center of Pressure in Postural Control for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders Was Partially Compromised

The purpose of this study was to compare the complexity of postural control between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typical developing children during altered visual and somatosensory conditions using the multiscale entropy. Eleven children with ASD and 11 typical developing children were tested during quiet standing under 4 conditions: (1) eyes open and standing on a stable surface, (2) eyes open and standing on a compliant surface, (3) eyes closed and standing on a stable surface, and (4) eyes closed and standing on a compliant surface. The center of pressure data were collected, and multiscale entropy and sway area of center of pressure were calculated. The ASD group exhibited lower complexity in mediolateral sway compared with typical developing children with a large effect size (partial η² = .21). However, based on the different postural control modes, the anteroposterior sway complexity did not demonstrate a similar decrease for children with ASD. The altered visual or somatosensory conditions alone did not significantly affect the postural sway complexity. The authors concluded that the complexity of postural control for children with ASD was partially compromised. Reduced mediolateral sway complexity could potentially increase the risks of fall.

On a nonlinear hybrid method for multiscale analysis of a bearing-capacity test of a real-scale segmental tunnel ring

A nonlinear hybrid method is developed for multiscale analysis of a bearing-capacity test of a real-scale segmental tunnel ring subjected to point loads. The structural analysis consists of two parts. Part I refers to modeling of bending-induced tensile cracking of the segments, resulting from the external loading. The segments are subdivided into elements, according to the crack spacing. Each element is either intact or contains one central crack band, flanked by lateral undamaged domains. A multiscale model for tensile softening of concrete is used to describe the progressive deterioration of the crack bands. After iterative determination of their state of damage, the effective bending and extensional stiffnesses of the corresponding elements are quantified by means of Voigt-Reuss-Hill estimates. The effective stiffnesses are used for linear-elastic simulations of the segmental tunnel ring. Part II refers to the relative rotation angles at the joints, which are estimated from monitoring data, using the Bernoulli-Euler hypothesis. Since the validity of this hypothesis is questionable for neck-like joints, the relative rotation angles are post-processed such that they refer to rigid body displacements of the segments. The following conclusions are drawn: The presented approach yields good estimates of crack widths. Relative rotation angles at the joints mainly result in rigid body displacements of the segments, governing the convergences. Because realistic interface models are lacking, hybrid analysis based on displacement-monitoring data allows for performing ultimate-load analysis of segmental tunnel rings.

Running ground reaction force complexity at the initial stance phase increased with ageing

Running mechanics could be influenced by some degenerative musculoskeletal changes associated with ageing. However, the shoe effect on ground reaction force (GRF) amplitude and complexity of older runners is still unclear. The objective of our study was to assess the effects of age and shoe on amplitude and complexity of GRF during treadmill running. In total, 20 healthy runners were recruited. GRF data were collected for 13 younger runners and seven older runners during running on an instrumented treadmill at 3.5 m/s. Maximum vertical loading rate and GRF variables were generated. Sample entropy of GRF during the first 20% of the stance phase was calculated to assess GRF complexity. Age and shoe type did not significantly affect the maximal loading rate and GRF. Older participants exhibited higher anteroposterior and vertical GRF sample entropy compared to younger runners. In conclusion, the amplitudes of GRF were not influenced by age group, which indicated that muscle strength in the older runners tested could fulfil mechanical demand (e.g., shock absorption, force generation) during running. However, the increased GRF complexity in initial stance phase with ageing could be a result of reduced muscle contraction coordination and smoothness of force production.

Nonlinear Analysis of Electroencephalogram Signals while Listening to the Holy Quran

Background:

Electrical activity of the brain, resulting from electrochemical signaling between neurons, is recorded by electroencephalogram (EEG). The neural network has complex behavior at different levels that strongly confirms the nonlinear nature of interactions in the human brain. This study has been designed and implemented with the aim of determining the effects of religious beliefs and the effect of listening to Holy Quran on electrical activity of the brain of the Iranian Persian-speaking Muslim volunteers.

Methods:

The brain signals of 47 Persian-speaking Muslim volunteers while listening to the Holy Quran consciously, and while listening to the Holy Quran and the Arabic text unconsciously were used. Therefore, due to the nonlinear nature of EEG signals, these signals are studied using approximate entropy, sample entropy, Hurst exponent, and Detrended Fluctuation Analysis.

Results:

Statistical analysis of the results has shown that listening to the Holy Quran consciously increases approximate entropy and sample entropy, and decreases Hurst Exponent and Detrended Fluctuation Analysis compared to other cases.

Conclusion:

Consciously listening to the Holy Quran decreases self-similarity and correlation of brain signal and instead increases complexity and dynamicity in the brain.

Modeling and Analysis of Upright Piezoelectric Energy Harvester under Aerodynamic Vortex-induced Vibration

This paper presents an upright piezoelectric energy harvester (UPEH) with cylinder extension along its longitudinal direction. The UPEH can generate energy from low-speed wind by bending deformation produced by vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs). The UPEH has the advantages of less working space and ease of setting up an array over conventional vortex-induced vibration harvesters. The nonlinear distributed modeling method is established based on Euler–Bernoulli beam theory and aerodynamic vortex-induced force of the cylinder is obtained by the van der Pol wake oscillator theory. The fluid–solid–electricity governing coupled equations are derived using Lagrange’s equation and solved through Galerkin discretization. The effect of cylinder gravity on the dynamic characteristics of the UPEH is also considered using the energy method. The influences of substrate dimension, piezoelectric dimension, the mass of cylinder extension, and electrical load resistance on the output performance of harvester are studied using the theoretical model. Experiments were carried out and the results were in good agreement with the numerical results. The results showed that a UPEH configuration achieves the maximum power of 635.04 μW at optimum resistance of 250 kΩ when tested at a wind speed of 4.20 m/s. The theoretical results show that the UPEH can get better energy harvesting output performance with a lighter tip mass of cylinder, and thicker and shorter substrate in its synchronization working region. This work will provide the theoretical guidance for studying the array of multiple upright energy harvesters.

Lower Local Dynamic Stability and Invariable Orbital Stability in the Activation of Muscle Synergies in Response to Accelerated Walking Speeds

In order to achieve flexible and smooth walking, we must accomplish subtasks (e. g., loading response, forward propulsion or swing initiation) within a gait cycle. To evaluate subtasks within a gait cycle, the analysis of muscle synergies may be effective. In the case of walking, extracted sets of muscle synergies characterize muscle patterns that relate to the subtasks within a gait cycle. Although previous studies have reported that the muscle synergies of individuals with disorders reflect impairments, a way to investigate the instability in the activations of muscle synergies themselves has not been proposed. Thus, we investigated the local dynamic stability and orbital stability of activations of muscle synergies across various walking speeds using maximum Lyapunov exponents and maximum Floquet multipliers. We revealed that the local dynamic stability in the activations decreased with accelerated walking speeds. Contrary to the local dynamic stability, the orbital stability of the activations was almost constant across walking speeds. In addition, the increasing rates of maximum Lyapunov exponents were different among the muscle synergies. Therefore, the local dynamic stability in the activations might depend on the requirement of motor output related to the subtasks within a gait cycle. We concluded that the local dynamic stability in the activation of muscle synergies decrease as walking speed accelerates. On the other hand, the orbital stability is sustained across broad walking speeds.

Multifractal Analysis Differentiates Postural Sway in Obese and Nonobese Children

Multifractal analyses have been used in recent years as a way of studying balance, with the goal of understanding the patterns of movement of the center of pressure at different spatial scales. A multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis was used to compare obese and nonobese children to investigate the cause of previously demonstrated deficiencies in balance for obese children. Twenty-two children (11 obese and 11 nonobese), aged 8-15 years, performed 30-s trials of bilateral static balance on a plantar pressure distribution measuring device. Both the obese and nonobese groups demonstrated greater persistence for small fluctuations, but the effect was greater in the obese group. This was particularly evident with the eyes closed, where significant differences between the obese and nonobese were observed for small fluctuations. These results demonstrate that balance deficiencies in obese children may be the result of decreased proprioceptive abilities in obese children.

Upper Trunk-Pelvis Coordination During Running Using the Continuous Relative Fourier Phase Method

The upper trunk-pelvic coordination patterns used in running are not well understood. The purposes of this study are to (1) test the running speed effect on the upper trunk-pelvis axial rotation coordination and (2) present a step-by-step guide of the relative Fourier phase algorithm, as well as some further issues to consider. A total of 20 healthy young adults were tested under 3 treadmill running speeds using a 3-dimensional motion capture system. The upper trunk and pelvic segmental angles in axial rotation were calculated, and the coordination was quantified using the relative Fourier phase method. Results of multilevel modeling indicated that running speed did not significantly contribute to the changes in coordination in a linear pattern. A qualitative template analysis suggested that participants displayed different change patterns of coordination as running speed increased. Participants did not significantly change the upper trunk and pelvis coordination mode in a linear pattern at higher running speeds, possibly because they employed different motion strategies to achieve higher running speeds and thus displayed large interparticipant variations. For most of our runners, running at a speed deviated from the preferred speed could alter the upper trunk-pelvis coordination. Future studies are still needed to better understand the influence of altered coordination on running performance and injuries.

Amplitude- and Fluctuation-Based Dispersion Entropy

Dispersion entropy (DispEn) is a recently introduced entropy metric to quantify the uncertainty of time series. It is fast and, so far, it has demonstrated very good performance in the characterisation of time series. It includes a mapping step, but the effect of different mappings has not been studied yet. Here, we investigate the effect of linear and nonlinear mapping approaches in DispEn. We also inspect the sensitivity of different parameters of DispEn to noise. Moreover, we develop fluctuation-based DispEn (FDispEn) as a measure to deal with only the fluctuations of time series. Furthermore, the original and fluctuation-based forbidden dispersion patterns are introduced to discriminate deterministic from stochastic time series. Finally, we compare the performance of DispEn, FDispEn, permutation entropy, sample entropy, and Lempel–Ziv complexity on two physiological datasets. The results show that DispEn is the most consistent technique to distinguish various dynamics of the biomedical signals. Due to their advantages over existing entropy methods, DispEn and FDispEn are expected to be broadly used for the characterization of a wide variety of real-world time series. Temporal more than spatial regulation of sway is important for posture in response to an ultra-compliant surface

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Many people use balance training as a rehabilitation or habilitation modality. Although the time course of changes to temporal and spatial aspects of postural sway over the initial weeks of such training is as yet unclear. Particularly, we sought to explore the effects of training on sway during a dynamic task of stance on an ultra-compliant surface. Such a task provides different mechanical, and thus sensorimotor, constraints compared to stance on a solid surface.

METHODS

Center of pressure (COP) was measured on an ultra-compliant surface atop a force plate at the start of each of 18 days of a 6-week balance training program. Range and standard deviation quantified amount of sway while velocity and Lyapunov exponent (LyE) quantify speed and rhythmicity of sway, respectively.

RESULTS

Trend analysis indicated quadratic changes in COP range and standard deviation, with initial reductions followed by returns to initial values by the end of training. Linear reduction of movement velocity and LyE continued through the duration of the program. Reduced LyE indicates regular (self-similar) structure of the COP path.

CONCLUSIONS

These results provide insight to the developing postural strategy necessary for maintaining upright stance within the dynamics created by interactions with an ultra-compliant surface. Participants showed sensitivity to surface properties, moving both more slowly and with a more regular movement pattern; suggesting that they were able to develop a more feed-forward approach to the maintenance of balance by exploiting task constraints.

Estimation of Handgrip Force from SEMG Based on Wavelet Scale Selection

This paper proposes a nonlinear correlation-based wavelet scale selection technology to select the effective wavelet scales for the estimation of handgrip force from surface electromyograms (SEMG). The SEMG signal corresponding to gripping force was collected from extensor and flexor forearm muscles during the force-varying analysis task. We performed a computational sensitivity analysis on the initial nonlinear SEMG-handgrip force model. To explore the nonlinear correlation between ten wavelet scales and handgrip force, a large-scale iteration based on the Monte Carlo simulation was conducted. To choose a suitable combination of scales, we proposed a rule to combine wavelet scales based on the sensitivity of each scale and selected the appropriate combination of wavelet scales based on sequence combination analysis (SCA). The results of SCA indicated that the scale combination VI is suitable for estimating force from the extensors and the combination V is suitable for the flexors. The proposed method was compared to two former methods through prolonged static and force-varying contraction tasks. The experiment results showed that the root mean square errors derived by the proposed method for both static and force-varying contraction tasks were less than 20%. The accuracy and robustness of the handgrip force derived by the proposed method is better than that obtained by the former methods.
