Abstract
BACKGROUND As the transmission routes of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are similar, previous studies based on separate research on HIV-1 and HCV assumed a similar transmission pattern. However, few studies have focused on the possible correlation of the spatial dynamics of HIV-1 and HCV among HIV-1/HCV coinfected patients. METHODS A total of 310 HIV-1/HCV coinfected drug users were recruited in Yingjiang and Kaiyuan prefectures, Yunnan Province, China. HIV-1 env, p17, pol and HCV C/E2, NS5B fragments were amplified and sequenced from serum samples. The genetic characteristics and spatial dynamics of HIV-1 and HCV were explored by phylogenetic, bootscanning, and phylogeographic analyses. RESULTS Among HIV-1/HCV coinfected drug users, eight HCV subtypes (1a, 1b, 3a, 3b, 6a, 6n, 6v, and 6u) and two HIV-1 subtypes (subtype B and subtype C), three HIV-1 circulating recombinant forms (CRF01_AE, CRF07_BC and CRF08_BC), and four unique recombinant forms (URF_BC, URF_01B, URF_01C and URF_01BC) were identified. HCV subtype 3b was the most predominant subtype in both Yingjiang and Kaiyuan prefectures. The dominant circulating HIV-1 subtypes for drug users among the two areas were CRF08_BC and URF_BC. Maximum clade credibility trees revealed that both HIV-1 and HCV were transmitted from Yingjiang to Kaiyuan. CONCLUSIONS The spatial dynamics of HIV-1 and HCV among HIV-1/HCV coinfected drug users seem to have high consistency, providing theoretical evidence for the prevention of HIV-1 and HCV simultaneously.

Abstract
HIV-1 subtype C is the predominant circulating virus in South Africa. There are reports of non-C subtypes emerging in different regions of the country, however, very little information exists on the genetic diversity of HIV in the Eastern Cape Province, despite having the third largest HIV epidemic in the country. In the current study, a near full-length genomic sequence obtained from a heterosexual woman in the Eastern Cape (ADE/CMH/0032), was analyzed using two rapid online subtyping tools; REGA and the jumping Profile Hidden Markov Model (jpHMM). There was agreement between the two tools in the assignment of the pol, Vif, and vpr regions, identified as a C/D recombinant (pol) and subtype C (vif and vpr). Some degree of agreement existed in the assignment of the Gag region, as recombinant: A1/C/B/D by REGA, and A1/C/D by jPHMM, respectively. There was disparity between the two online tools in the subtype assignment of the remaining gene regions. Phylogenetic analysis with pure subtype reference sequences showed that the query sequence clustered with a subtype C reference strain, with a low bootstrap value of 43%. This is the first report from South Africa of a putative unique recombinant as classified by rapid online subtyping tools, involving subtype A1, C, D, B, and K. However, the clinical and epidemiological implications of this variant remain unclear. Further studies are needed to fully understand the genetic diversity of HIV in the Eastern Cape.

Identification of a New HIV-1 BC Intersubtype Circulating Recombinant Form (CRF108_BC) in Spain. Viruses 2021; 13:v13010093. Abstract
The extraordinary genetic variability of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) group M has led to the identification of 10 subtypes, 102 circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) and numerous unique recombinant forms. Among CRFs, 11 derived from subtypes B and C have been identified in China, Brazil, and Italy. Here we identify a new HIV-1 CRF_BC in Northern Spain. Originally, a phylogenetic cluster of 15 viruses of subtype C in protease-reverse transcriptase was identified in an HIV-1 molecular surveillance study in Spain, most of them from individuals from the Basque Country and heterosexually transmitted. Analyses of near full-length genome sequences from six viruses from three cities revealed that they were BC recombinant with coincident mosaic structures different from known CRFs. This allowed the definition of a new HIV-1 CRF designated CRF108_BC, whose genome is predominantly of subtype C, with four short subtype B fragments. Phylogenetic analyses with database sequences supported a Brazilian ancestry of the parental subtype C strain. Coalescent Bayesian analyses estimated the most recent common ancestor of CRF108_BC in the city of Vitoria, Basque Country, around 2000. CRF108_BC is the first CRF_BC identified in Spain and the second in Europe, after CRF60_BC, both phylogenetically related to Brazilian subtype C strains.

Abstract
To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of drug-resistance genotypes among unique recombinant forms (URFs) in HIV-1 infected people under long-term antiretroviral treatment failure from Yunnan Province. The plasma samples were collected from antiretroviral therapy (ART)-failure experienced individuals from 2016 to 2017 in Yunnan Province, China. The genotyping drug resistance of HIV-1 pol gene fragments was implemented using in-house assay. According to the analysis of RIP and MEGA 7.0, the HIV-1 strains related to URFs were screened for recombinant identification and drug resistance analysis. A total of 130 pol sequences of HIV-1 URF strains were obtained from 1,121 samples. The proportion of HIV-1 URF strains was 11.6% among the ART-failure individuals from 2016 to 2017 in Yunnan. The overall drug-resistance rate of HIV-1 URF strains was 56.9%. Meanwhile, the percentage of protease inhibitors, nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) resistance was 3.8% (5/130), 36.2% (47/130), and 53.8% (70/130), respectively. Mutations such as M184V/I (35.4%) in NRTIs and K103N/R/S/T (25.4%), V179D/E/T/Y (18.9%), G190A/E/R/S (13.8%), and Y181C (9.2%) in NNRTIs were common among the HIV-1 URF strains relative to other mutations. Factors such as male, sexual transmission pathway, and source of the year 2017 were significantly correlated with the development of HIV-1 URF drug resistance. The emergence of the multiple recombinant forms identified in Yunnan indicates active transmission networks of HIV-1 of different HIV-1 subtype/circulating recombinant forms cross-infection in this region. Therefore, it is necessary to further monitor the molecular epidemiology and drug resistance of HIV-1 in Yunnan.

Abstract
After the first case of HIV infection in 1987, the number of cases has continuously increased in Pakistan, turning from isolated incidents to outbreaks to the concentrated epidemic. The HIV epidemic in Pakistan is mainly driven by subtype A; however, the overlapping transmission chains facilitate recombination between subtypes and existing circulating recombinants forms (CRFs), leading to the emergence of unique recombinant forms (URFs). In this study, we report the first case of a URF (URF_DG) in a Pakistani HIV-infected patient. Phylogenetic and drug resistance analysis of the patient-derived sequence indicated that Pakistani URF_DG sequence was closely related to the URF_DG sequence reported from the United Kingdom, but had more drug resistance mutations than the U.K. sequence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Unique recombinant forms (URFs) were generated in dually infected or multiply infected individuals, and some of URFs can be transmitted to many people resulting in the emergence of circulating recombinant forms (CRFs). We examined whether there was evidence for onward transmission of multiple URFs among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Beijing. METHODS A total of 146 MSM subjects with acute/early HIV-1 infection were recruited from the Beijing PRIMO clinical cohort between September 2010 and July 2012. HIV-1 full-length gag and partial pol, env genes were amplified and sequenced separately. Phylogenetic analysis and recombination analysis were performed to determine the viral genotypes. Single genome amplification and direct sequencing were used to confirm onward transmission of URFs. RESULTS CRF01_AE was the most common genotype (51.9%), followed by CRF07_BC (23.0%), subtype B (14.8%), URFs (7.4%), CRF65_cpx (2.2%), and CRF55_01B (0.7%). Multiple forms of URFs were identified, including CRF01_AE/BC, CRF01_AE/B, and CRF01_AE/C. Nine of the 10 individuals harboring URFs were infected by onward transmission of URFs. The remaining one individual was coinfected with CRF01_AE and CRF07_BC variants. CONCLUSIONS We introduced a new method to provide evidence for onward transmission of URF strains by examining the absence of intersubtype coinfection among early infected individuals. Onward transmission of multiple URFs was found among MSM in Beijing, China. Our findings call for a program of continuous molecular surveillance and have implications to prevention programs among MSM in China.

Abstract
HIV-1 intersubtype B/C recombinants were more commonplace reported in high-risk populations in Yunnan province, China. In this study, three unique (B/C) recombinant isolates (2015YL02, 2018YL07, and SN18015) were identified from patients infected with HIV-1 through sexual transmission in Shaanxi province. Phylogenetic and bootscan analyses showed that three recombinants comprised HIV-1 subtype B and subtype C. The recombinant structures revealed that the near full-length sequence of 2015YL02 shared an identical mosaic structure with XC2014EU20, which was isolated from Sichuan province. And two similar breakpoints were observed between 2018YL07 and CRF08_BC in pol gene. The arising B/C recombinant forms enrich evidence of the HIV-1 genetic diversity among sexually transmitted populations and suggest that continuously monitoring HIV-1 molecular epidemiology is needed in Shaanxi province.

Abstract
Currently, complex HIV-1 recombinations among the B', C, and CRF01_AE genotypes have frequently arisen in Yunnan, China. A novel HIV-1 complex circulating recombinant form (CRF) consisting of B', C, and CRF01_AE (CRF96_cpx) was recently characterized from three epidemiologically unlinked individuals. Two strains of them were isolated from the injecting drug users in this study, the remaining one strain (JL. RL01) was obtained from a previous report in Jilin province. Phylogenetic analysis based on near full-length genome revealed that CRF96_cpx formed a distinct monophyletic cluster supported by a high bootstrap value of 100%, distantly related to all known HIV-1 subtypes/CRFs. CRF96_cpx had a CRF01_AE backbone with three subtype B' and C segments inserted, respectively, in the gag and pol region. Furthermore, subregion tree analysis showed that CRF01_AE backbone and subtype B segment inserted originated from a Thai-CRF01_AE lineage, whereas subtype C fragment inserted was from an India C lineage. They are different from previously documented CRF01_AE/B/C forms in its distinct backbone, inserted fragment size, and breakpoints. This highlighted the importance of continual monitoring of genetic diversity and complexity of HIV-1 strains in Yunnan, China.

Abstract
PURPOSE Diverse human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) subtypes and circulating recombinant forms are found in Brazil. The majority of HIV-1 molecular epidemiological studies in Brazil have been conducted in the southern and south-eastern regions of the country, although several recent studies in the north-eastern region have addressed this issue. The objective of this study was to molecularly characterize HIV-1 circulating in Pernambuco, north-eastern Brazil. METHODOLOGY A total of 64 samples were collected from 2002 to 2003, and another 103 were collected from 2007 to 2009. The protease and partial reverse transcriptase regions of the HIV-1 polymerase-encoding (pol) gene were sequenced, and subtyping, recombination and phylogenetic analyses were performed.Results/Key findings. Subtype B (60.9 %) was found to be predominant, followed by HIV-1 F (31.4 %). Several BF recombinants (4.2 %), and BC and AG recombinants were also identified. The intra-subtype genetic diversity was estimated to be 0.065 (sd±0.004) for HIV-1 B and 0.055 (sd±0.004) for HIV-1 F, reflecting a greater accumulation of mutations in subtype B (P<0.01). More codons were found to be under positive selective pressure in samples collected from 2007 to 2009, from individuals with a T-cell count≥200 cells mm-3 and from women. Coalescence data indicated that the subtype F population has been continuously expanding. CONCLUSIONS HIV-1 shows high genetic diversity in the state of Pernambuco. Thus, additional molecular evaluations of circulating strains will provide a better understanding of the epidemic and may lead to more effective preventive strategies.

Abstract
In recent years, multiple circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) and unique recombinant forms of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) have been described in Yunnan, China. Here, we identified a novel HIV-1 CRF (CRF86_BC) isolated from three heterosexuals with no obvious epidemiologic linkage in western Yunnan (Baoshan prefecture) in China. CRF86_BC had a subtype C backbone with four subtype B fragments inserted into the pol, vpr, vpu, env, and nef gene regions, respectively. Furthermore, subregion tree analysis revealed that subtype C backbone originated from an Indian C lineage and subtype B segment inserted was from a Thai B lineage. They are different from previously documented B/C forms in its distinct backbone, inserted fragment size, and break points. This highlighted the importance of continual monitoring of genetic diversity and complexity of HIV-1 strains in this region.

Abstract
New human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) diagnoses are increasing rapidly in Hebei. The aim of this study presents the most extensive HIV-1 molecular epidemiology investigation in Hebei province in China thus far. We have carried out the most extensive systematic cross-sectional study based on newly diagnosed HIV-1 positive individuals in 2013, and characterized the molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 based on full length gag-partial pol gene sequences in the whole of Hebei. Nine HIV-1 genotypes based on full length gag-partial pol gene sequence were identified among 610 newly diagnosed naïve individuals. The four main genotypes were circulating recombinant form (CRF)01_AE (53.4%), CRF07_BC (23.4%), subtype B (15.9%), and unique recombinant forms URFs (4.9%). Within 1 year, three new genotypes (subtype A1, CRF55_01B, CRF65_cpx), unknown before in Hebei, were first found among men who have sex with men (MSM). All nine genotypes were identified in the sexually contracted HIV-1 population. Among 30 URFs, six recombinant patterns were revealed, including CRF01_AE/BC (40.0%), CRF01_AE/B (23.3%), B/C (16.7%), CRF01_AE/C (13.3%), CRF01_AE/B/A2 (3.3%) and CRF01_AE/BC/A2 (3.3%), plus two potential CRFs. This study elucidated the complicated characteristics of HIV-1 molecular epidemiology in a low HIV-1 prevalence northern province of China and revealed the high level of HIV-1 genetic diversity. All nine HIV-1 genotypes circulating in Hebei have spread out of their initial risk groups into the general population through sexual contact, especially through MSM. This highlights the urgency of HIV prevention and control in China.

Abstract
Most HIV subtypes prevalent in China can be found in Shenzhen, including CRF07_BC, CRF01_AE, CRF08_BC, CRF55_01B, and subtype B. Multiple subtypes spreading in the same population always lead to the emergence of unique recombinant strains. Here, we report two unique recombinant forms (SZ44LS7251 and SZ95LS8027) of HIV-1 identified in a heterosexual population. Recombinant analyses were fulfilled based on the near full-length genomes. Both strains comprise subtypes B, C, and CRF01_AE. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that SZ44LS7251 is the second generation recombination originated from CRF55_01B andCRF07_BC, whereas SZ95LS8027 comprises CRF01_AE and CRF07_BC.The emergence of second generation recombination of HIV with complicated genomic structures supposed that high ratio of super infections or coinfections might happen in the Shenzhen area.

Abstract
We report a novel HIV circulating recombinant form (CRF B/C) identified from 10 epidemiologically unlinked individuals in Sichuan province, China, all self-report infected by heterosexual behavior. Sequencing and analyzing the near-full-length genome of these strains revealed this recombinant form to be composed of subtype B (China and Thailand) and subtype C (China and India), with three subtype B segments inserted into the pol, vpu, and nef regions of the subtype C backbone. To our knowledge, this identified HIV-1 recombinant form differs from previously documented B/C forms in its distinct backbone, inserted fragment size, and breakpoints. In agreement with the current HIV nomenclature system, this novel recombinant form constitutes a novel CRF (CRF85_BC). Our present findings further enrich the diversity of the prevalent HIV-1 CRFs in China.

Abstract
In recent years, the population infected through sexual contact has seen the fastest growing prevalence of HIV transmission in Henan province, China. Here, we report two novel human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) recombinant form detected from a comprehensive HIV-1 molecular epidemiologic study among heterosexuals. Recombinant analyses of the near full-length genome of the two novel HIV-1 recombinant isolates: 01B.CN.2012.11092 was CRF01_AE that was partly replaced by a subtype B' fragment of 414 bp (from 4482-4896 according to the HXB2 calibrator). 01BC.CN.2011.11312 was composed of three segments (CRF01_AE/CRF_07BC/B') with breakpoints 4274 and 4833 according to the HXB2 calibrator. They are different from previously identified recombinant strains reported in China.

Abstract
Yunnan seems to be a "hot spot" region of HIV-1 recombination. CRF01_AE and subtype CRF08_BC are two main HIV-1 clades circulating in Yunnan. We report here a novel HIV-1 second-generation recombinant form originated from CRF01_AE and CRF08_BC. The strain (12YN10551) was isolated from a HIV-positive male infected through heterosexual contact in Dali prefecture of Yunnan province, China. This is the first report of HIV-1 near full-length genomic sequence in Dali. Recombinant analysis shows that 12YN10551 was composed of two well-established circulating recombinant forms (CRF01_AE and CRF08_BC). Two CRF01_AE recombinant fragments were inserted into the CRF08_BC backbone genome in the pol/vif/vpr/tat/rev and nef gene regions, respectively. The discovery and characterization of this new recombinant indicate that intersubtype recombination is continuously generating new forms of HIV-1. More work is needed to better monitor the genetic diversity of HIV-1 in this region.

Abstract
We report a novel HIV circulating recombinant form (CRF78_cpx) composed mainly of CRF01_AE with inserts from subtypes B and C identified from three epidemiologically unlinked individuals in Yunnan province, China. Two of the subjects are heterosexual men and one is a male intravenous drug user. Sequencing and analyzing the near-full-length genome of these three isolates (YNTC88, YNTC19, and YNTC35) revealed identical recombination breakpoints in all three viruses, but considerable genetic diversity between them, across the genomes, indicating that this is not a newly created CRF, only newly detected. CRF78_cpx differs from previously documented CRF01-AE/B'/C forms in its distinct backbone, inserted fragment size, and breakpoints, and is not related to other described recombinants in the region such as CRF07_BC or CRF65_cpx (also composed of CRF01_AE, B', and C). Our present findings further enrich the diversity of the prevalent HIV-1 CRFs in Yunnan, which is considered as an epicenter of HIV-1 infections in China.

Abstract
We found cluster 1 and cluster 2 that were identified as two potential circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) by analyzing the recombinant breakpoints and phylogenetic tree. Three sequences composed of CRF01_AE, subtype C, and potential subtype B (N/A) in cluster 1 had nearly identical recombinant breakpoints, and four sequences composed of CRF01_AE and subtype B in cluster 2 possessed identical breakpoints. Demographic characteristics indicated that there were no epidemiological linkages among three subjects in cluster 1 and four subjects in cluster 2, respectively. Likewise, two unique recombinant forms (URFs) were found in this study: one URF was composed of subtype C and subtype B, and subtype B was inserted into a backbone of subtype C; another URF was composed of subtype C, subtype B, CRF01_AE, and subtype A2. It was inferred that the potential novel CRFs and URFs have spread into general populations, suggesting that the series research of novel recombinant strains will be a priority for our researches in the future.

Abstract
Unlike most areas of China, HIV transmission via men who have sex with men (MSM) is increasing rapidly, and has become the main route of HIV transmission in Harbin city. The purpose of the current study was to elaborate the molecular epidemiologic characteristics of the new HIV epidemic. Eighty-one HIV-1 gag gene sequences (HXB2:806-1861) from local HIV infections were isolated; CRF01_AE predominated among HIV infections (71.6%), followed by subtype B (16.5%), CRF07_BC (6.2%), and unique recombinant strains (URFs; 6.2%). URFs were most often identified in the MSM population, which consisted of a recombination of CRF01_AE with subtype B or CRF07_BC. Six clusters were formed in this analysis; clusters I and II mainly circulated in southwest China. Clusters III and IV mainly circulated in southwest, southeast, and central China. Clusters V and VI mainly circulated in north and northeast China. Clusters III and IV may facilitate the transmission of the CRF01_AE strain from the southwest to the north and northeast regions of China. HIV subtypes are becoming diverse with the persistent epidemic in this geographic region. In brief, our results indicate that the molecular epidemiology of HIV is trending to be more complex. Thus, timely molecular epidemiologic supervision of HIV is necessary, especially for the MSM population.

Abstract
The Myanmar-China border appears to be the "hot spot" region for the occurrence of HIV-1 recombination. The majority of the previous analyses of HIV-1 recombination were based on partial genomic sequences, which obviously cannot reflect the reality of the genetic diversity of HIV-1 in this area well. Here, we present a near full-length characterization of a novel HIV-1 CRF01_AE/B/C recombinant isolated from a long-distance truck driver in Northern Myanmar. It is the first description of a near full-length genomic sequence in Myanmar since 2003, and might be one of the most complicated HIV-1 chimeras ever detected in Myanmar, containing four CRF01_AE, six B segments, and five C segments separated by 14 breakpoints throughout its genome. The discovery and characterization of this new CRF01_AE/B/C recombinant indicate that intersubtype recombination is ongoing in Myanmar, continuously generating new forms of HIV-1. More work based on near full-length sequence analyses is urgently needed to better understand the genetic diversity of HIV-1 in these regions.

Abstract
Dehong prefecture, Yunnan province on China’s southwestern border was the gateway of the country’s AIDS epidemic. Studies on HIV-1 molecular epidemiology will provide key information on virus transmission dynamics and help to inform HIV prevention strategies. HIV-1 infected youths (age 16–25 years) diagnosed in the continuous 3 months in 2009 to 2012 were enrolled. By means of phylogenetic and statistical analyses, It was showed that two thirds (133/205) of youths in Dehong, of which 74.1% were infected sexually, were infected by uncharacterized recombinant HIV-1 strains. Among them about 59.4% (79/131) were unique recombinant forms (URFs) and 40.6% (54/131) formed 11 transmission clusters, termed potential circulating recombinant forms (pCRFs). The emergence of recombinants was statistically significant related with people of low education, residents outside the capital city of Dehong and being Myanmar residents. It was the first report with ongoing HIV-1 recombinant strains in a sexually driven epidemic area in China. Great efforts should be put on reducing multiple risk exposures behavior in local young people, containing the spread of pCRFs to other regions, and preventing the URFs from evolving into future CRFs. Collaborative prevention across border is needed to better control the local AIDS epidemic.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess HIV-1 prevalence and the distribution of HIV-1 subtypes among travelers crossing the border at the HeKou land port. Between 2003 and 2012, 22,799 persons were randomly recruited from people entering China from Vietnam. In this crossing border population, a total of 161 (0.71%) travelers were determined as HIV-1-positive. From them, 140 HIV-1-positive serum samples were collected for RNA extraction and subsequent RT-nested PCR amplification of the group-specific antigen (gag)-RT with a length of 2.6 kb. The DNA sequences were analyzed to determine the HIV-1 subtypes/recombinants. We found that the circulating recombinant form 01_AE (CRF01_AE) was the most common HIV-1 subtype, accounting for 49.4% (41/83) of the subtyped 83 samples, followed by CRF08_BC (26.5%, 22/83) and CRF07_BC (7.2%, 6/83). Only 1 sample was classified as subtype C. Thirteen cases could not be clustered into any known subtypes or CRFs and presented as unique recombinant forms (URFs). Of them, 6 recombination patterns were identified. They had distinct structures consisting of fragments of subtypes B, C, CRF01_AE, CRF07_BC and CRF08_BC. Between 2003 and 2012, CRF01_AE and CRE08_BC were shown to be the most prevalent recombinant forms identified each year. But yearly change of each subtype is uncertain regular among in these travelers during the past decade. Understanding the distribution of HIV-1 subtypes/recombinants and how it changes across time among individuals entering China from Vietnam through this land port is crucial to establish strategies for the prevention of HIV cross-border transmission.

Abstract
Injection drug use has been responsible for most HIV-1 transmission in Asia and has led to the generation and/or spreading of circulating recombinant CRF01_AE, CRF07_BC, and CRF08_BC, which are currently the predominant HIV-1 strains in China. Monitoring HIV-1 transmissions among injection drug users (IDUs) still provides critical information on HIV-1 prevalence and control. In the present study, we detected three HIV-1 sequences, BH048/057/066, from IDUs in Beihai city, Guangxi province, all of which share an extremely complex mosaic recombination pattern. CRF01_AE and CRF08_BC contributed to the rise of new recombinants, which contain CRF08_BC-derived env fragments with evidence of further evolution. Our data, combined with those of other studies, suggest that the BH048/057/066 recombinants represent early strains of a circulating recombinant form of HIV-1 in southern China. Information concerning such newly appearing variants is critical for both HIV-1 control and ongoing HIV-1 vaccine trials in Guangxi, China.

Abstract
Background We have previously reported in Xishuangbanna (Banna) Dai Autonomous Prefecture, a well-developed tourist destination in the southwest border of China, that HIV-1 transmitted dominantly through heterosexual contact with less divergent genotypes and few drug resistant mutations [1]. Due to the rapid increase of newly diagnosed HIV-1 cases per year in Banna in recent years, it’s important to evaluate the evolution of HIV-1 molecular epidemiology for the better understanding of ongoing HIV-1 outbreak in this region. Methodology/Principal Findings By sequencing of HIV-1 pol genes and phylogenetic analysis, we conducted a molecular epidemiologic study in 352 HIV-1-seropositive highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART)-naïve individuals newly diagnosed at the Banna Center for Disease Control and Prevention between 2009 and 2011. Of 283 samples (84.1% taken from heterosexually acquired adults, 10.6% from needle-sharing drug users, 2.8% from men who have sex with men, 0.4% from children born from HIV-1-infected mothers, and 2.1% remained unknown) with successful sequencing for pol gene, we identified 108 (38.2%) HIV-1 subtype CRF08_BC, 101 (35.7%) CRF01_AE, 49 (17.3%) CRF07_BC, 5 (1.8%) C/CRF57_BC, 3 (1.1%) B’, 1 (0.4%) B/CRF51_01B, and 16 (5.7%) unique recombinants forms. Among these infected individuals, 104 (36.7%) cases showed drug resistant or resistance-relevant mutations, and 4 of them conferring high-level resistance to 3TC/FTC, EFV/NVP or NFV. Phylogenetic analysis revealed 21 clusters (2–7 sequences) with only 21.2% (60/283) sequences involved. Conclusion/Significance In contrast to our previous findings, CRF08_BC, replaced CRF01_AE, became the dominant genotype of HIV-1 in Banna prefecture. The viral strains with drug resistance mutations were detected frequently in newly diagnosed HIV-1-infected individuals in this region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The China-Myanmar border is a particularly interesting region that has very high prevalence of and considerable diversity of HIV-1 recombinants. Due to the transient nature of their work, long-distance truck drivers (LDTDs) have a comparatively high potential to become infected with HIV-1 and further spread virus to other individuals in the area they travel within. In this study, we hypothesized that Burmese LDTDs crossing the China-Myanmar border frequently may potentially be involved in the cross-border transmission of HIV, and contribute to the extremely high prevalence of HIV-1 inter-subtype recombinants in this border region. METHODS A molecular epidemiology study was conducted among 105 Burmese LDTDs between 2008 and 2010. HIV-1 genetic fragments including p17, pol, vif-vpr, vpr-env, and C2V3 were amplified and sequenced. The subtype characterization and HIV-1 transmission were determined by both phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses. RESULTS Diverse forms of HIV-1, including subtypes CRF01_AE (41.9%), C (8.6%), B (4.8%), CRF02_AG (1.0%), and inter-subtype recombinants (33.3%), as well as dual infection (10.5%), were detected among the tested LDTDs. Phylogeographic analyses based on pure subtype revealed that 77.8% Burmese LDTDs acquired HIV-1 infection in Yunnan, and the others in Myanmar. Both the C-related and CRF01_AE-related recombinants from these LDTDs appeared to have close genetic relationship with those from IDUs in Myanmar and Dehong. CONCLUSIONS Burmese LDTDs may contribute to HIV-1 transmission along the China-Myanmar border. The results may provide some new perspective for understanding the on-going generation and prevalence of HIV-1 recombinants in the border region.

Abstract
A novel HIV-1 circulating recombinant form (CRF) designated CRF65_cpx was recently characterized from three epidemiologically unlinked individuals infected through heterosexual contact in western Yunnan province of China. This is the first complex mosaic HIV-1 CRF, consisting of contributions from three or more different subtypes, identified in China. An additional full-length genome sequence with identical recombinant breakpoints was found among a previously reported recombinant strain from a man who had sex with a man in Anhui province of East Central China. The breakpoint analysis of the recombinants showed a complex genome organization composed of parental subtypes B' (Thailand variant of subtype B), C, and CRF01_AE, with 13 recombination breakpoints observed in almost all structure genes of HIV-1. The generation of complex recombinant forms is likely due to cocirculation of multiple lineages of HIV-1 strains in high-risk populations in western Yunnan.

Abstract
We report here a novel HIV-1 circulating recombinant form (CRF62_BC) that was isolated from three epidemiologically unlinked individuals [one from an injecting drug user (IDU); two from heterosexuals] in Dehong prefecture of western Yunnan province. CRF62_BC harbored two subtype B segments in the pol and vpu-env regions in a subtype C backbone. Subregion tree analysis demonstrated that subtype B regions originated from a Thai-B (subtype B') lineage and the subtype C region was from an India C lineage. CRF62_BC is the fourth CRF composed of subtypes B' and C known to date after CRF07_BC, CRF08_BC, and CRF57_BC, which were originally found among IDUs in China. The emergence of CRF62_BC may indicate the continual generation of new recombinant strains in various high-risk populations in western Yunnan. This may complicate the development of effective vaccines to limit the HIV-1 epidemic and increase the difficulty of AIDS prevention and control in China.

Abstract
We report a novel HIV-1 circulating recombinant form (CRF64_BC) that was isolated from five epidemiologically unlinked HIV-infected persons in Yunnan province. CRF64_BC was composed of subtype B and subtype C, with five short subtype B segments inserted into the subtype C backbone. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the C subregion was correlated with the India C lineage, which was transmitted into China in the early 1990s. The evolutionary history of the B subregion was not as clear as the C subregion, as the short length of this region yielded poor phylogenetic results. Dehong is considered the epicenter of HIV-1 in China, and recombinant strains such as CRF07_BC and CRF08_BC, which also originated from this region, have spread widely in China. The newly emerged CRF64_BC increases the complexity of the HIV epidemic in China and complicates the development of subtype-specific tools against HIV transmission.

Abstract
We identified a novel HIV-1 circulating recombinant form (designated CRF57_BC) from a total of four patients with no obvious epidemiologic linkage in western Yunnan (Dehong prefecture) in China. Two strains (09CN.YNFL37 and 10CN.DHFL17) were identified in this study. An additional two strains (341 and 1439) were found among strains reported in a previous study. CRF57_BC was composed of subtype B and subtype C, with one subtype B segment inserted into the gag region of the subtype C backbone. Subregion tree analysis showed that the B regions originated from a Thai B lineage and the C regions were from an India C lineage. The emergence of CRF57_BC may reflect the continual generation of various forms of intersubtype recombinants in western Yunnan.

Abstract
We report here a novel HIV-1 B'/C recombinant isolate JL100091, identified from an HIV-positive female subject infected through heterosexual transmission in Jilin in 2006. The near full-length genome analyses of the novel recombinant (JL10091) showed that one subtype B' region (3,085 bp) was inserted into the subtype C backbone, with two breakpoints observed in gag and pol genes. To our knowledge, this is the first detection of a novel HIV-1 B'/C recombinant in Jilin, which indicates ongoing transmission of networks among the heterosexual population in the region. The novel HIV-1 B'/C recombinant (JL10091) in Jilin originated from India subtype C and China subtype B' may suggest potential transmission routes of HIV-1 in China. Further monitoring of the molecular epidemiology of the HIV-1 epidemic in Jilin will provide critical information for designing effective control and prevention measures against HIV transmission in the region.

Abstract
Yunnan, Guangxi and Henan are the provinces with the most severe HIV epidemic in China, which were also among the first group of areas providing free ART in 2004. However, little comprehensive data are available on prevalence of HIV subtype and baseline drug resistance in drug-naïve populations. In this study, 1746 treatment-naïve HIV-positive individuals were randomly selected from new-reported cases in Henan, Guangxi and Yunnan. Among of them, subtypes and drug resistance of 1159 strains were determined by amplifying and sequencing full-length pol genes. Significantly different distributions of HIV subtypes prevalent in three provinces were identified (P<0.01). CRF08_BC was found dominant in Yunnan (59.8%), while CRF01_AE was dominant in Guangxi (77.3%) and subtype B was dominant in Henan province (93.9%). The total prevalence of drug resistance was 7.1%. The highest prevalence of HIV drug resistance was found in Henan (12.2%), followed by Yunnan (5.6%) and Guangxi (3.3%). The results of this study suggest that genetic drug-resistance should be tested before initiation of ART in China, especially in Henan province. Furthermore, the prevalence of HIV drug resistant strains should be considered separately in different areas in China before the change of different free ART regimens.

Abstract
We report here the first novel HIV-1 second-generation intercirculating recombinant form 61_BC (inter-CRF61_BC), composed of two established CRFs (CRF07_BC and CRF08_BC), in China. CRF61_BC is the first CRF found among the heterosexual population in two different regions in China, suggesting the increasing significance of heterosexual transmission of HIV in China.
