Cross-Sectional and Prospective Associations between Physical Activity and C-Reactive Protein in Males

NHANES-based analysis of the correlation between leisure-time physical activity, serum cotinine levels and periodontitis risk

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the association of leisure-time physical activity and serum cotinine levels with the risk of periodontitis in the general population and to further analyze the interaction between leisure-time physical activity and serum cotinine levels on the risk of periodontitis.

METHODS

This was a cross-sectional study, extracting data from 9605 (56.19%) participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2009 to 2014, and analyzing the relationship and interaction effects of serum cotinine level, leisure time physical activity, and risk of periodontitis by weighted univariate logistic modeling; Effect sizes were determined using ratio of ratios (OR), 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).

RESULTS

5,397 (56.19%) of 9,605 participants had periodontitis; an increased risk of periodontitis was found in those in the leisure time physical activity intensity < 750 MET × min/week group (OR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.17-1.78). Serum cotinine levels ≥ 0.05 ng/ml were associated with an increased risk of periodontitis (OR = 1.99, 95% CI: 1.69-2.33). The group with low leisure physical activity and serum cotinine levels ≥ 0.05 ng/ml had an increased risk of periodontitis compared to the group with high leisure physical activity and serum cotinine levels < 0.05 ng/ml (OR = 2.48, 95% CI: 1.88-3.27). Interaction metrics RERI = 0.90 (95% CI: 0.44-1.36) and API = 0.36 (95% CI: 0.18-0.55); CI for SI = 2.55 (95% CI: 1.03-6.28). for API 0.36.

CONCLUSION

Leisure time physical activity intensity interacted with smoking exposure on periodontitis risk and may provide the general population with the opportunity to Increasing leisure-time physical activity and smoking cessation may provide recommendations for the general population.

Longitudinal associations of physical activity with inflammatory markers in US adults with and without type 1 diabetes

AIMS

To investigate the longitudinal associations of different levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) with C-reactive protein (CRP), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), and fibrinogen.

METHODS

We conducted longitudinal analyses with data from the Coronary Artery Calcification in T1D (CACTI) cohort, which included individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D, n = 563) and without diabetes mellitus (non-DM, n = 692) with ∼ 3 years follow-up. Individuals were divided into groups to perform two analyses: 1) those who performed any MVPA and those who were sedentary (0 mins/week) and 2) those who performed 1-149 mins/week, ≥150 mins/week, or who were sedentary. Mixed effect models with an unstructured covariance structure were applied.

RESULTS

Compared to sedentary individuals, any MVPA was associated with a -2.96 % decrease in fibrinogen (p-value = 0.0043) and a -11.23 % decrease in PAI-1 (p-value = 0.0007) in combined analyses. Stratified analyses found 1-149 mins/week and ≥ 150 mins/week were associated with significant decreases in fibrinogen, -5.31 % and -3.44 %, respectively, in those with T1D. Both the non-DM and T1D groups had significant decreases in PAI-1 associated with ≥ 150 mins/week (-9.11 % and -16.96 %, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings highlight that meeting ≥ 150 mins/week of MVPA is inversely associated with inflammatory markers linked with increased CVD risk.

Leisure-time and occupational physical activity demonstrate divergent associations with periodontitis: A population-based study

AIM

To evaluate the association between leisure-time/occupational physical activity (LTPA/OPA) and periodontitis in a nationally representative sample of the U.S.

POPULATION

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Data from 10,679 adults were retrieved from NHANES 2009-2014 database. Physical activity was assessed through the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire, and accordingly, subjects were classified as performing either high or low LTPA/OPA. Periodontal status was assessed through a full-mouth periodontal examination, and subjects were classified according to the AAP/CDC criteria (no, mild, moderate, or severe periodontitis). Simple and multiple regression analyses were applied to study the association between LTPA/OPA and periodontitis/severe periodontitis.

RESULTS

Multiple regression analyses identified high LTPA as a protective indicator for periodontitis (odds ratio [OR] = 0.81; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.72-0.92), while high OPA was found to be a significant risk indicator (OR = 1.16; 95% CI: 1.04-1.30). The combination low LTPA/high OPA showed a cumulative independent association with periodontitis (OR = 1.47; 95% CI: 1.26-1.72). Moreover, both high LTPA (OR = 0.72; 95% CI: 0.58-0.90) and high OPA (OR = 1.29; 95% CI: 1.09-1.53) were significantly associated with stronger estimates of severe periodontitis; the same was observed for the combination of low LTPA/high OPA (OR = 1.66; 95% CI: 1.29-2.15).

CONCLUSIONS

LTPA and OPA showed divergent associations with periodontitis.

Aerobic Training Effect on Arterial Stiffness in Metabolic Syndrome

BACKGROUND

Metabolic syndrome, physical inactivity, and central obesity contribute to early vascular aging, which leads to increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to assess the effect of heart rate (HR)-targeted aerobic exercise training on the indices of early vascular aging, in particular, arterial stiffness, and on anthropometric and clinical profile of metabolic syndrome subjects.

METHODS

There were 126 metabolic syndrome subjects randomly selected. Anthropometric parameters, blood pressure (BP), blood sample, and arterial wall functional and structural parameters were obtained prior to and after the 8-week (84 patients) supervised training program. The age- and sex-matched control group (42 patients) followed the same protocol, except for the HR-targeted training program.

RESULTS

In the study group, HR-targeted training was associated with decreased aortic pulse wave velocity (8.47 ± 1.40 vs 8.01 ± 1.06 m/s; P = .005), HR (P < .001), systolic (P < .015) and diastolic (P < .004) BP, waist circumference (P < .004), total and low-density-lipid cholesterol (respectively, 6.42 ± 1.41 vs 5.89 ± 1.32, P = .003 and 4.2 ± 1.18 vs 3.8 ± 1.21, P = .002), and an increase in aerobic capacity (P < .001). In the control group there were no statistically significant changes of arterial stiffness parameters. Multivariate analysis revealed that reduction of arterial stiffness was BP dependent.

CONCLUSIONS

In subjects with metabolic syndrome, HR-targeted exercise training is associated with BP-dependent decrease in aortic stiffness and improvement of metabolic and fitness parameters.
