Abstract
PURPOSE To determine whether there is a significant association between inflammatory cytokines in the tear fluid and the severity of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). STUDY DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. METHODS The cytokine levels in tear fluids were determined in 34 eyes with ROP and 18 eyes without ROP. There were 15 eyes with severe ROP requiring treatment and 19 eyes with mild ROP not requiring treatment. For severe ROP eyes, tear fluids were collected before treatment. RESULTS Significantly higher levels of CCL2 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were detected in eyes with severe ROP compared to eyes with mild ROP and no ROP. When assessed for cytokine levels that discriminate each disease group, CCL2 showed a significant odds ratio of 1.76 for severity change (/quintile, P = 0.032, after adjusting for birth weight). Correlation analysis showed that birth weight correlated with IL-1α levels, and decreased weight gain increased IFN-γ levels. We next determined tear fluid cytokines which discriminate severe ROP using receiver operating characteristics' analysis. We found that combination of higher CCL2 levels, higher VEGF levels, and lower IFN-γ levels in the tear fluid had a stronger predictive value for severe ROP (area under curve, 0.85). CONCLUSION The levels of CCL2, VEGF, and IFN-γ in tear fluid may serve as useful biomarkers for assessing the severity of ROP.

Abstract
The nutrition of preterm infants remains contaminated by wrong beliefs that reflect inexactitudes and perpetuate old practices. In this narrative review, we report current evidence in preterm neonates and in preterm neonates undergoing surgery. Convictions that necrotizing enterocolitis is reduced by the delay in introducing enteral feeding, a slow advancement in enteral feeds, and the systematic control of residual gastric volumes, should be abandoned. On the contrary, these practices prolong the time to reach full enteral feeding. The length of parenteral nutrition should be as short as possible to reduce the infectious risk. Intrauterine growth restriction, hemodynamic and respiratory instability, and patent ductus arteriosus should be considered in advancing enteral feeds, but they must not translate into prolonged fasting, which can be equally dangerous. Clinicians should also keep in mind the risk of refeeding syndrome in case of high amino acid intake and inadequate electrolyte supply, closely monitoring them. Conversely, when preterm infants undergo surgery, nutritional strategies are still based on retrospective studies and opinions rather than on randomized controlled trials. Finally, this review also highlights how the use of adequately fortified human milk is strongly recommended, as it offers unique benefits for immune and gastrointestinal health and neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common life-threatening gastrointestinal emergency in prematurity. The pathophysiology is multifactorial and remains incompletely understood. Early diagnosis and treatment could reduce the risk of mortality and morbidity. We aimed to identify factors associated with NEC in preterm newborns. METHOD This case-control study included all preterm newborns presenting with NEC and managed between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2018 in the neonatal intensive care unit of Nancy. For each case, two controls were matched according to three criteria: gestational age (WG), date of birth, and mode of delivery. Antenatal, peripartum, and postnatal risk factors prior to NEC were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 292 infants were involved in the study, 113 of whom had NEC. Mean gestational age for newborns with NEC was 29 WG, and mean birth weight, 1340 g. Only early-onset infection was identified as a significant risk factor for NEC (15% vs. 6.6% for infection p<0.04, and 28.3% vs. 16.4% p<0.02 for infection and sepsis, NEC vs. controls, respectively). Late-onset feeding and initial continuous enteral feeding were significantly associated with the occurrence of more severe NEC (p<0.02 and p = 0.03, respectively). CONCLUSION The results of this study are consistent with intestinal dysbiosis being a risk factor for NEC. Early-onset infection was found to be a significant risk factor. Enteral feeding practice may also be associated with NEC.

Abstract
As presently conceptualised, the artificial placenta (AP) is an experimental life support platform for extremely preterm infants (i.e. 400-600 g; 21-23+6 weeks of gestation) born at the border of viability. It is based around the oxygenation of the periviable fetus using gas-exchangers connected to the fetal vasculature. In this system, the lung remains fluid-filled and the fetus remains in a quiescent state. The AP has been in development for some sixty years. Over this time, animal experimental models have evolved iteratively from employing external pump-driven systems used to support comparatively mature fetuses (generally goats or sheep) to platforms driven by the fetal heart and used successfully to maintain extremely premature fetuses weighing around 600 g. Simultaneously, sizable advances in neonatal and obstetric care mean that the nature of a potential candidate patient for this therapy, and thus the threshold success level for justifying its adoption, have both changed markedly since this approach was first conceived. Five landmark breakthroughs have occurred over the developmental history of the AP: i) the first human studies reported in the 1950's; ii) foundation animal studies reported in the 1960's; iii) the first extended use of AP technology combined with fetal pulmonary resuscitation reported in the 1990s; iv) the development of AP systems powered by the fetal heart reported in the 2000's; and v) the adaption of this technology to maintain extremely preterm fetuses (i.e. 500-600 g body weight) reported in the 2010's. Using this framework, the present paper will provide a review of the developmental history of this long-running experimental system and up-to-date assessment of the published field today. With the apparent acceleration of AP technology towards clinical application, there has been an increase in the attention paid to the field, along with some inaccurate commentary regarding its potential application and merits. Additionally, this paper will address several misrepresentations regarding the potential application of AP technology that serve to distract from the significant potential of this approach to greatly improve outcomes for extremely preterm infants born at or close to the present border of viability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify gestational age (GA) specific risk factors for severe ROP (sROP). STUDY DESIGN Single-center cohort stratified by GA into <24 weeks, 24-26 weeks and ≥27 weeks. RESULTS 132/1106 (11.9%) developed sROP. Time to full feeds was the only risk factor [HR 1.003 (1.001-1.006), p = 0.04] for infants<24 weeks GA. For infants 24-26 weeks GA, a higher GA was protective [HR 0.66 (0.51-0.85), p < 0.01], whereas steroids for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) [HR 2.21 (1.28-3.26), p < 0.01], patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) ligation [HR 1.99 (1.25-3.11), p < 0.01] and use of nitric oxide [HR 1.96 (1.11-3.30), p = 0.01] increased the hazard of sROP. Increasing birthweight was protective [HR 0.70 (0.54-0.89), p < 0.01] in infants ≥27 weeks GA. Cumulative hazard of sROP reached 1.0 by fifteen weeks for <24 weeks GA, 0.4 by twenty weeks for 24-26 weeks GA, and 0.05 by twenty weeks after birth for ≥27 weeks GA. CONCLUSIONS Risk factors, cumulative hazard, and time to sROP vary by GA.

Abstract
This review article summarizes current data on malnutrition etiology and pathogenesis in infants. Topical requirements for revealing this condition, its diagnosis and severity assessment via centile metrics are presented. The characteristics of the most common clinical phenotypes of postnatal growth insufficiency in infants (premature infants with different degree of maturation, including patients with bronchopulmonary dysplasia) are described. Differential approaches for malnutrition nutritional correction in these children are presented. The final section of the article describes special nutritional needs for children with congenital heart defects in terms of hemodynamic disorders nature and severity. Modern nutritional strategies for preparation of these patients to surgery and for their postoperative period are presented. The use of high-calorie/high-protein product for malnutrition correction in the most vulnerable patients with described in this review phenotypes is worth noticing.

Abstract
With limited clinical evidence available to guide common nutritional decisions, significant variation exists in approaches to enteral feeding for very preterm infants, specifically when feedings are initiated, what is fed, and the method used for feedings. Preclinical studies have highlighted the benefits associated with avoiding nil per os and providing early-stage mother's own milk or colostrum. However, these recommended approaches are often mutually exclusive due to the delays in lactation associated with very preterm delivery, resulting in uncertainty regarding which approach should be prioritized. Few studies have evaluated feeding frequency in preterm infants, with limited generalizability to extremely preterm infants. Therefore, even evidence-based approaches to very preterm infant feed initiation can differ. Future research is needed to identify optimal strategies for enteral nutrition in very preterm infants, but, until then, evidence-informed approaches may vary depending on each neonatal intensive care unit's assessment of risk and benefit.

Abstract
Premature birth is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the pediatric population. Because their immune, gastrointestinal and nervous systems are not fully developed, preterm infants (<37 weeks of gestation) and especially very preterm infants (VPIs, <32 weeks of gestation) are more prone to infectious diseases, tissue damage and future neurodevelopmental impairment. The aim of this narrative review is to report the immaturity of VPI systems and examine the role of Human Breast Milk (HBM) in their development and protection against infectious diseases, inflammation and tissue damage. For this purpose, we searched and synthesized the data from the existing literature published in the English language. Studies revealed the significance of HBM and indicate HBM as the best dietary choice for VPIs.

Abstract
Background The practice of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is widely used for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) despite its corresponding feeding strategies are still controversial. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) demonstrated to evaluate the effect of early vs. delayed enteral nutrition on the incidence of feeding intolerance (FI) and other association during TH. Methods This single center, parallel-group, and no-blinded RCT was processed in a level III, and academic neonatal intensive care unit. Infants who were diagnosed with HIE and undertaken TH from September 2020 to August 2021 were enrolled. Participants were randomized to receive enteral nutrition either during TH/rewarming (early enteral nutrition, EEN) or after TH (delayed enteral nutrition, DEN) according to a recommend enteral feeding protocol. All data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 software with a p-value< 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Ninety-two infants were enrolled after randomization, but 12 (13.04%) cases including 3 (3.26%) deaths were excluded from eventually analyzed, who did not initiate or discontinue the intervention. 80 cases (42 and 38 in the EEN and DEN group, respectively) who completed the interventions were eventually analyzed. Besides initial time of enteral feeds, two groups had processed the same feeding method. Total 23 (25.0%) cases developed FI, and no difference of morbidity was found between two groups (23.4% vs 26.7%, p = 0.595; Log Rank, p = 0.803). There was no case died or developed late-onset bloodstream and no difference of the incidence of hypoglycemia or weight gain was found (p > 0.05). The percentage of infants who had not reaching the goal of full enteral feeding volume between the two groups was similar (21.43% vs 23.68%, p = 0.809). The average time of parenteral nutrition, reaching full enteral feeds and hospital stay were shorter in the EEN group compared with the DEN group with significant differences (8.81 ± 1.67 vs 10.61 ± 2.06 days, p < 0.001; 9.91 ± 1.88 vs 12.24 ± 2.50 days, p < 0.001; 12.55 ± 4.57 vs 16.47 ± 5.27 days, p = 0.001 respectively). Conclusions Compared with delayed enteral nutrition, introduction of early enteral nutrition according to a recommend feeding strategy for neonatal HIE undergoing TH may be feasible and safe.FI is frequent in this high-risk group of infants which should not be ignored during feeding process. Abstract
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is considered to be one of the most devastating intestinal diseases seen in neonatal intensive care. Measures to treat NEC are often too late, and we need effective preventative measures to alleviate the burden of this disease. The purpose of this review is to summarize currently used measures, and those showing future promise for prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parenteral nutrition (PN) is essential to support premature infants' growth and varies with enteral nutrition (EN) advancement rates. Data on PN duration's impact on premature infants' growth are limited. The aim of this multicenter observational study was to determine the effect of early PN duration on body composition at term corrected gestational age (CGA) in very low-birth-weight (VLBW) premature infants. METHODS VLBW infants exposed to PN in the first week of life and exposed to significantly different EN regimens were divided into two groups on the basis of early PN duration. Infants with a birth weight (BW) <1000 g and PN duration <28 days and infants with a BW 1000-1500 g and PN duration <14 days were assigned to the "short-PN" group. Infants receiving PN for longer durations were assigned to the "long-PN" group. Body composition was assessed via air displacement plethysmography at term CGA or before discharge. RESULTS Sixty-two and 53 infants were assigned to the short-PN and long-PN groups, respectively. The two groups were significantly different in BW and GA, so a nested case-control study was conducted after matching 36 infant pairs. Infants in the long-PN group had significantly lower fat-free mass (FFM) z-scores, but both groups had comparable fat mass (FM) z-scores. Long PN was a significant negative predictor of FFM z-score in the multivariate regression analysis. CONCLUSION In VLBW premature infants, PN duration is negatively associated with FFM z-scores at term CGA without affecting FM z-scores.

Abstract
Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) for 72 h is the standard treatment to reduce neurological deficits in term newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. There is a large variability regarding nutritional supply during TH treatment in asphyxiated newborns. We performed a retrospective multicentre study in four level I (highest level of care in Germany) NICUs, including 135 asphyxiated term newborns undergoing TH. We analyzed enteral and parenteral nutritional supply during and after TH. We correlated nutritional supply with risk factors for encephalopathy, pH, Sarnat score, mechanical ventilation, seizures, and sedation. A total of 120 of 135 neonates received enteral nutritional supply within the first 24 h, and the majority of children were fully enterally fed within the first 10 days. The grade of encephalopathy and mechanical ventilation had a significant influence on the amount of enteral fluids (p = 0.01), whereas the pH and appearance of seizures did not affect the amount of nutritional supply significantly. Furthermore, we did not observe any correlation between enteral intake and abdominal complications such as necrotizing enterocolitis. We observed a large variability of feeding regimes in the four participating NICUs. Early enteral feeding among newborns undergoing TH was performed in each NICU and was well tolerated without increased rates of complications.

Abstract
In extremely preterm infants, poor post-natal growth, intestinal dysbiosis and bronchopulmonary dysplasia are common, and each is associated with long-term complications. The central hypothesis that this review will address is that these three common conditions are interrelated. Challenges to studying this hypothesis include the understanding that malnutrition and poor post-natal growth are not synonymous and that there is not agreement on what constitutes a normal intestinal microbiota in this evolutionarily new population. If this hypothesis is supported, further study of whether "correcting" intestinal dysbiosis in extremely preterm infants reduces postnatal growth restriction and/or bronchopulmonary dysplasia is indicated.

Abstract
Enteral feeding is the preferred method of nutrient provision for preterm infants. Though parenteral nutrition remains an alternative to provide critical nutrition after preterm delivery, the literature suggests that enteral feeding still confers significant nutritional and non-nutritional benefits. Therefore, the purpose of this narrative review is to summarize health and clinical benefits of early enteral feeding within the first month of life in preterm infants. Likewise, this review also proposes methods to improve enteral delivery in clinical care, including a proposal for decision-making of initiation and advancement of enteral feeding. An extensive literature review assessed enteral studies in preterm infants with subsequent outcomes. The findings support the early initiation and advancement of enteral feeding impact preterm infant health by enhancing micronutrient delivery, promoting intestinal development and maturation, stimulating microbiome development, reducing inflammation, and enhancing brain growth and neurodevelopment. Clinicians must consider these short- and long-term implications when caring for preterm infants.

Abstract
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) remains the most common severe complication of preterm birth, and nutrition plays a crucial role in lung growth and repair. A practical nutritional approach for infants at risk of BPD or with established BPD is provided based on a comprehensive literature review. Ideally, infants with BPD should receive a fluid intake of not more than 135-150 mL/kg/day and an energy intake of 120-150 kcal/kg/day. Providing high energy in low volume remains a challenge and is the main cause of growth restriction in these infants. They need a nutritional strategy that encompasses early aggressive parenteral nutrition and the initiation of concentrated feedings of energy and nutrients. The order of priority is fortified mother's own milk, followed by fortified donor milk and preterm enriched formulas. Functional nutrient supplements with a potential protective role against BPD are revisited, despite the limited evidence of their efficacy. Specialized nutritional strategies may be necessary to overcome difficulties common in BPD infants, such as gastroesophageal reflux and poorly coordinated feeding. Planning nutrition support after discharge requires a multidisciplinary approach to deal with multiple potential problems. Regular monitoring based on anthropometry and biochemical markers is needed to guide the nutritional intervention.

Abstract
Early detection of gestational complications is a priority in obstetrics. In our social context, this is linked to maternity age. Most studies are focused on biological factors. However, pregnancy is also influenced by social and psychological factors, which have not been deeply explored. We aimed to identify biopsychosocial risk and protective factors associated with the development of maternal and fetal complications. We enrolled 182 healthy pregnant women, and plasma melatonin and cortisol levels were measured in the first trimester by chemiluminescent immunoassays. At different time points along gestation, women answered several questionnaires (positive and negative affect schedule, hospital anxiety and depression scale, pregnancy concerns scale, life orientation test, resilience scale, life satisfaction scale and life-work conflicts scale). They were followed up until delivery and categorized as normal pregnancy, maternal or fetal complications. Maternal complications were associated with low melatonin (OR = 0.99 [0.98; 1.00]; p-value = 0.08) and life satisfaction (OR = 0.64 [0.41; 0.93]; p-value = 0.03) and fetal complications were associated with high cortisol (OR = 1.06 [1.02; 1.13]; p-value = 0.04), anxiety (OR = 2.21 [1.10; 4.55]; p-value = 0.03) and life-work conflicts (OR = 1.92 [1.04; 3.75]; p-value = 0.05). We conclude that psychological factors influence pregnancy outcomes in association with melatonin and cortisol alterations. High maternal melatonin and life satisfaction levels could be potential protective factors against the development of maternal complications during pregnancy. Low anxiety and cortisol levels and reduced work-life conflicts could prevent fetal complications.

Abstract
NEC is a devastating disease that, once present, is very difficult to treat. In the absence of an etiologic treatment, preventive measures are required. Advances in decoding the pathophysiology of NEC are being made but a more comprehensive understanding is needed for the targeting of preventative strategies. A better definition of the disease as well as diagnostic criteria are needed to be able to specifically label a disease as NEC. Multiple environmental factors combined with host susceptibility appear to contribute to enhanced risks for developing this disease. Several different proximal pathways are involved, all leading to a common undesired outcome: Intestinal necrosis. The most common form of this disease appears to involve inflammatory pathways that are closely meshed with the intestinal microbiota, where a dysbiosis may result in dysregulated inflammation. The organisms present in the intestinal tract prior to the onset of NEC along with their diversity and functional capabilities are just beginning to be understood. Fulfillment of postulates that support causality for particular microorganisms is needed if bacteriotherapies are to be intelligently applied for the prevention of NEC. Identification of molecular effector pathways that propagate inflammation, understanding of, even incipient role of genetic predisposition and of miRNAs may help solve the puzzle of this disease and may bring the researchers closer to finding a treatment. Despite recent progress, multiple limitations of the current animal models, difficulties related to studies in humans, along with the lack of a "clear" definition will continue to make it a very challenging disease to decipher.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Decrease time to enteral feeding initiation and advancement. STUDY DESIGN In our all-referral neonatal intensive care unit, we developed an evidence-based guideline addressing feeding initiation and advancement. During 6 months before and 7 months after guideline implementation, we measured time to initiate feeding, time to 100 ml/kg/day of feeding, gastric residual measurement frequency, and incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis (balancing measure). RESULT Two hundred twenty-three infants were studied. Time from admission to feeding initiation was shorter after guideline implementation (mean 0.5 days [95% CI: 0.4-0.7] vs. 1.1 days [95% CI: 0.7-1.5], p = 0.01). Time from admission to 100 ml/kg/day feeding was also shorter (3.6 days [95% CI: 2.8-4.4] vs. 6.2 days [95% CI: 4.4-8.1], p = 0.01). After guideline implementation, routine gastric residual measurements were discontinued. CONCLUSION After implementation of an enteral feeding guideline, which included discontinuation of routine gastric residual assessment, we observed a faster initiation of enteral feeding and shorter time to reach 100 ml/kg/day.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Withholding enteral feedings during hypothermia lacks supporting evidence. OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine if minimal enteral nutrition (MEN) during hypothermia in patients with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy was associated with a reduced duration of parenteral nutrition, time to full oral feeds, and length of stay, but would not be associated with increased systemic inflammation or feeding complications. METHODS We performed a pilot, retrospective, matched case-control study within the Florida Neonatal Neurologic Network from December 2012 to May 2016 of patients who received MEN during hypothermia (n = 17) versus those who were not fed (n = 17). Length of stay, feeding-related outcomes, and brain injury identified by MRI were compared. Serum inflammatory mediators were measured at 0-6, 24, and 96 h of life by multiplex assay. MRI were scored using the Barkovich system. RESULTS MEN subjects had a reduced length of hospital stay (mean 15 ± 11 vs. 24 ± 19 days, p < 0.05), days receiving parenteral nutrition (7 ± 2 vs. 11 ± 6, p < 0.05), and time to full oral feeds (8 ± 5 vs. 18 ± 18, p < 0.05). MEN was associated with a significantly reduced serum IL-12p70 at 24 and 96 h (p < 0.05). Brain MRI scores were not significantly different between groups. CONCLUSION MEN during hypothermia was associated with a reduced length of stay and time to full feeds, but did not increase feeding complications or systemic inflammation.

Abstract
Background: The pathophysiology of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains poorly understood.Objective: We assessed the relation between feeding strategies, intestinal microbiota composition, and the development of NEC.Design: We performed a prospective nationwide population-based study, EPIPAGE 2 (Etude Epidémiologique sur les Petits Ages Gestationnels), including preterm infants born at <32 wk of gestation in France in 2011. From individual characteristics observed during the first week of life, we calculated a propensity score for the risk of NEC (Bell's stage 2 or 3) after day 7 of life. We analyzed the relation between neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) strategies concerning the rate of progression of enteral feeding, the direct-breastfeeding policy, and the onset of NEC using general linear mixed models to account for clustering by the NICU. An ancillary propensity-matched case-control study, EPIFLORE (Etude Epidémiologique de la flore), in 20 of the 64 NICUs, analyzed the intestinal microbiota by culture and 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing.Results: Among the 3161 enrolled preterm infants, 106 (3.4%; 95% CI: 2.8%, 4.0%) developed NEC. Individual characteristics were significantly associated with NEC. Slower and intermediate rates of progression of enteral feeding strategies were associated with a higher risk of NEC, with an adjusted OR of 2.3 (95% CI: 1.2, 4.5; P = 0.01) and 2.0 (95% CI: 1.1, 3.5; P = 0.02), respectively. Less favorable and intermediate direct-breastfeeding policies were associated with higher NEC risk as well, with an adjusted OR of 2.5 (95% CI: 1.1, 5.8; P = 0.03) and 2.3 (95% CI: 1.1, 4.8; P = 0.02), respectively. Microbiota analysis performed in 16 cases and 78 controls showed an association between Clostridium neonatale and Staphylococcus aureus with NEC (P = 0.001 and P = 0.002).Conclusions: A slow rate of progression of enteral feeding and a less favorable direct-breastfeeding policy are associated with an increased risk of developing NEC. For a given level of risk assessed by propensity score, colonization by C. neonatale and/or S. aureus is significantly associated with NEC. Abstract
This study aimed to measure longitudinal quantities of the long chain fatty acids, their biologically active terminal metabolites and related intermediates (also called oxylipins) in preterm human milk expressed during the first month of lactation. In a prospective cohort, breast milk was collected throughout the first month of lactation in 30 women who delivered preterm infants. Eighteen bioactive lipids and their intermediates were quantified via solid phase extraction and LC-MS/MS. Analysis by GC-FID quantified the fatty acid precursors. Arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) milk concentrations significantly declined throughout the first month. Oxylipin concentrations did not change during lactation. Positive associations existed between ARA and thromboxane B2, eicosapentaenoic acid and 18-hydroxyeicosapentaenoic acid, and between DHA and PDX and 14- and 17-hydroxydocosahexaenoic acids. DHA concentrations were 1.5 times higher and 14-HDHA was 1.7 times higher in milk from women taking DHA supplements. This investigation showed conditionally essential fatty acids, ARA and DHA, decreased in preterm milk, suggesting a need to supplement their intake for the breast milk-fed preterm infant. Positive associations between parent fatty acids, bioactive lipids and intermediates, as well as sensitivity of milk to maternal fatty acid intake, support consideration of a comprehensive approach to providing fatty acids for preterm infants through both maternal and infant supplementation.

Abstract
Eimeria spp. must be controlled in floor-reared poultry to prevent the onset of coccidiosis. Here we use an oral antibody to chicken IL-10 to prevent growth depression due to Eimeria spp. infection. Egg antibody directed against an antigenic peptide of IL-10 was produced in laying hens and measured using an ELISA. In the first experiment, egg yolk powder containing antibody to chicken IL-10 (vlpramqt conjugate) (anti-IL-10 yolk powder) was fed at 3.4 g/kg feed to determine growth response following mixed Eimeria spp. challenge. Chicks were fed either anti-IL-10 antibodies or control antibodies and challenged (d3) with either sterile saline or a 10× attenuated Eimeria spp. vaccine. Control-fed and Eimeria-challenged chicks grew 8.8% slower than those challenged with saline (P < 0.04), whereas anti-IL-10-fed Eimeria challenged chicks were not different from untreated controls. In the second trial a dose response was performed with doses of either 0 (control antibody), 0.34-, or 3.4-g anti-IL-10 yolk powder/kg feed. Control-fed, Eimeria-challenged chicks grew 10.6% slower than control saline-challenged chicks (P < 0.05); however, anti-IL-10-fed chicks fed either dose of anti-IL-10 were not different from saline-challenged chicks. Finally, the effect of anti-IL-10 on acquired immunity was investigated. Chicks were fed control or anti-IL-10 yolk powder and vaccinated with a 1× dose of Eimeria vaccine at d 3. After 14 d, antibody was removed from the diet. Chicks were either saline or 10× Eimeria challenged at d 17. We found that the anti-IL-10-fed chickens did not show a reduction in growth due to challenge; hence anti-IL-10 does not appear to affect adaptive immunity during the primary immunization. Overall, use of an antibody to IL-10 is a novel method in preventing adverse effects of Eimeria spp. infection in poultry.
