Abstract
AIM To examine and compare the autonomic responses, as assessed through the non-linear and chaotic global metrics of heart rate variability in two groups: the Parkinson's Disease Group (PDG) and the Control Group (CG), both at rest and during an active tilt test. METHODS The study encompassed 46 participants (PDG: n = 23; 73.73 ± 7.28 years old; CG: n = 23; 70.17 ± 8.20 years old). Initial data collection involved the acquisition of participant's characteristics. The autonomic modulation was estimated both at rest and during the active tilt test. For this assessment, we computed non-linear indices derived from five entropies (Approximate, Sample, Shannon, Renyi, Tsallis), Detrended Fluctuation Analysis and the seven chaotic global metrics (hsCFP1-hsCFP7). RESULTS At rest, the PDG exhibited lower values of hsCFP3 (0.818 ± 0.116 vs. 0.904 ± 0.065; p < 0.05) and Sample Entropy (0.720 ± 0.149 vs. 0.799 ± 0.171; p < 0.05). During the test, the PDG demonstrated lower values of ApEn, while the CG presented lower values of SampEn, hsCFP1, hsCFP3, hsCFP7, and higher values of hsCFP5. An interaction was observed, indicating that hsCFP1 and hsCFP3 exhibit differential behavior for the CG and PDG in response to the test. CONCLUSION subjects with PD exhibited reduced complexity of the RR interval series at rest, and a diminished autonomic response to the active tilt test when compared with the CG. The test, together with non-linear indices, may serve for assessing the Autonomic Nervous System in individuals with PD in a clinical setting. The interpretation of these data should be approached with caution, given the possible influences of pharmacotherapies and the inclusion of diabetic participants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Parkinson disease (PD) is frequently associated with autonomic dysfunctions. However, data regarding the influence of PD on the autonomic responses to postural changes is limited. OBJECTIVE To analyze and compare the autonomic responses, evaluated through linear and non-linear methods of heart rate variability, and cardiorespiratory parameters in two groups: Parkinson disease (PDG) and control (CG), at rest and during the active tilt test. METHODS A total of 48 participants were analyzed (PDG: n = 25;73.40 ± 7.01 years / CG: n = 23;70.17 ± 8.20 years). The autonomic modulation and cardiorespiratory parameters were evaluated at rest and during the active tilt test. To assess the autonomic modulation the linear indices, at the time (rMSSD, SDNN) and frequency (LF, HF, LF/HF) domains, and the non-linear indices, obtained through the Poincaré plot (SD1, SD2, SD1/SD2), were calculated. The cardiorespiratory parameters evaluated were heart rate (HR), systolic (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), and respiratory rate. RESULTS At rest, the PDG presented significantly lower values of rMSSD, SDNN, LF, HF, SD1, SD2, and DBP, and higher values of SpO2. During test, in the PD group, modifications were observed in HR, and SBP, besides a reduced parasympathetic response, and an increased global modulation. The qualitative analysis of the Poincaré plot showed that the PDG has a lower dispersion of the RR intervals during rest and the active tilt test. CONCLUSION Individuals with PD present reduced global variability and parasympathetic modulation at rest, and reduced parasympathetic response and damage in HR regulation when performing the active tilt test, compared with controls.

Abstract
Background Monitoring glucose and other parameters in persons with type 1 diabetes (T1D) can enhance acute glycemic management and the diagnosis of long-term complications of the disease. For most persons living with T1D, the determination of insulin delivery is based on a single measured parameter—glucose. To date, wearable sensors exist that enable the seamless, noninvasive, and low-cost monitoring of multiple physiological parameters. Objective The objective of this literature survey is to explore whether some of the physiological parameters that can be monitored with noninvasive, wearable sensors may be used to enhance T1D management. Methods A list of physiological parameters, which can be monitored by using wearable sensors available in 2020, was compiled by a thorough review of the devices available in the market. A literature survey was performed using search terms related to T1D combined with the identified physiological parameters. The selected publications were restricted to human studies, which had at least their abstracts available. The PubMed and Scopus databases were interrogated. In total, 77 articles were retained and analyzed based on the following two axes: the reported relations between these parameters and T1D, which were found by comparing persons with T1D and healthy control participants, and the potential areas for T1D enhancement via the further analysis of the found relationships in studies working within T1D cohorts. Results On the basis of our search methodology, 626 articles were returned, and after applying our exclusion criteria, 77 (12.3%) articles were retained. Physiological parameters with potential for monitoring by using noninvasive wearable devices in persons with T1D included those related to cardiac autonomic function, cardiorespiratory control balance and fitness, sudomotor function, and skin temperature. Cardiac autonomic function measures, particularly the indices of heart rate and heart rate variability, have been shown to be valuable in diagnosing and monitoring cardiac autonomic neuropathy and, potentially, predicting and detecting hypoglycemia. All identified physiological parameters were shown to be associated with some aspects of diabetes complications, such as retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy, as well as macrovascular disease, with capacity for early risk prediction. However, although they can be monitored by available wearable sensors, most studies have yet to adopt them, as opposed to using more conventional devices. Conclusions Wearable sensors have the potential to augment T1D sensing with additional, informative biomarkers, which can be monitored noninvasively, seamlessly, and continuously. However, significant challenges associated with measurement accuracy, removal of noise and motion artifacts, and smart decision-making exist. Consequently, research should focus on harvesting the information hidden in the complex data generated by wearable sensors and on developing models and smart decision strategies to optimize the incorporation of these novel inputs into T1D interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The cardiovascular system is directly influenced by the autonomic nervous system (ANS); its changes affect heart rate variability (HRV) and are sensitive indicators of physiological changes. Autonomic dysfunction (AD) is manifested in up to 60% of patients with cirrhosis. Therefore, we aim to analyze the indexes of HRV pre- and post-surgery of children submitted for liver transplantation (LT). METHODS HRV, in children of both genders from 6 months of age to 10 years, that attended at the pediatric surgery clinic in the queue for LT at the Children's Institute were analyzed. To access HRV we analyzed indexes such as standard deviation of the RR intervals (SDNN), root-mean-square of the successive normal sinus RR interval difference (RMSSD), low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), and LF/HF. RESULTS The analysis of the behavior of cardiac autonomic modulation, in the period prior to LT and after surgery, showed an increase in HRV linear parameters SDNN, TINN (triangular interpolation of NN interval histogram), HFms2. In the time domain, there was also an increase in the HFms2 index. CONCLUSIONS The analysis of the period preceding LT and two months after surgery showed an increase in the HRV linear parameters representing a global HRV improvement. In the time domain, there was also an increase in the HFms2 index, parasympathetic tone of the HRV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Analysis of autonomic modulation after postural change may inform the prognosis and guide treatment in different populations. However, this has been insufficiently explored among adolescents with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). OBJECTIVE To investigate autonomic modulation at rest and in response to an active sitting test (AST) among adolescents with DMD. METHODS Fifty-nine adolescents were included in the study and divided into two groups: 1) DMD group: adolescents diagnosed with DMD; 2) control group (CG): healthy adolescents. Participants' weight and height were assessed. Lower limb function, motor limitations and functional abilities of the participants in the DMD group were classified using the Vignos scale, Egen classification and motor function measurement, respectively. The following variables were assessed before, during and after AST: systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), respiratory rate (f), oxygen saturation and heart rate (HR). To analyze the autonomic modulation, the HR was recorded beat-by-beat. Heart rate variability (HRV) indices were calculated in the time and frequency domains. RESULTS Differences in relation to groups were observed for all HRV indices, except LF/HF, oxygen saturation, HR and f (p < 0.05). Differences in relation to time and the interaction effect between group and time were observed for RMSSD, SD1, SD2, SD1/SD2, LFms2 and LFnu, HFun, SBP and DBP (p < 0.05). Differences in relation to time were also observed for the indice SDNN, FC and f (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Performing the AST promoted reduced autonomic modulation and increased SBP, DBP and HR in adolescents with DMD.

Abstract
Pediatric neuropathy attributed to metabolic dysfunction is a well-known complication in children and youth with type 1 diabetes. Moreover, the rise of obesity and in particular of type 2 diabetes may cause an uptick in pediatric neuropathy incidence. However, despite the anticipated increase in neuropathy incidence, pathogenic insights and strategies to prevent or manage neuropathy in the setting of diabetes and obesity in children and youth remain unknown. Data from adult studies and available youth cohort studies are providing an initial understanding of potential diagnostic, management, and preventative measures in early life. This review discusses the current state of knowledge emanating from these efforts, with particular emphasis on the prevalence, clinical presentation, diagnostic approaches and considerations, and risk factors of neuropathy in type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children and youth. Also highlighted are current management strategies and recommendations for neuropathy in children and youth with diabetes. This knowledge, along with continued and sustained emphasis on identifying and eliminating modifiable risk factors, completing randomized controlled trials to assess effectiveness of strategies like weight loss and exercise, and enhancing awareness to support early detection and prevention, are pertinent to addressing the rising incidence of neuropathy associated with diabetes and obesity in children and youth.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study was to evaluate the cardiac autonomic modulation after 9 months of martial arts practice in healthy children and adolescents. METHOD The study included 59 children and adolescents who were divided into 3 groups: judo, Muay Thai, and control. Heart rate variability was measured by a heart rate monitor, model Polar RS800CX. The intervention occurred twice a week on nonconsecutive days, lasting 60 minutes each session. A 1-way analysis of variance was used to compare participants at baseline. The comparisons between groups at baseline and after the intervention were carried out by a 2-way analysis of variance for repeated measures. RESULTS After 9 months of intervention, significant increases were observed for root mean square successive differences, with higher values post compared with baseline (19.5%; P = .04). For SD1, an interaction effect was observed, with increased posttraining values compared with baseline (24.1%; P = .04) for the judo group. Qualitative analysis of the Poincaré plot showed greater dispersion of RR intervals, mainly beat to beat, after the judo intervention compared with the baseline. The Muay Thai and control groups presented no improvement. CONCLUSION After 9 months of intervention, there were increases in cardiac autonomic modulation of children and adolescents participating in judo training. The practice of martial arts, such as judo, can be encouraged from an early age to improve cardiovascular system functioning, possibly providing protection against cardiovascular problems.
