Metabolic Syndrome and Associated Factors in Adults of the Amazon Region

Patterns of metabolic syndrome and associated factors in women from the ELSA-Brasil: a latent class analysis approach

This study aimed to identify patterns of metabolic syndrome among women and estimate their prevalence and relationship with sociodemographic and biological characteristics. In total, 5,836 women were evaluated using baseline data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). Patterns of metabolic syndrome were defined via latent class analysis, using the following metabolic abnormalities as indicators: abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, and reduced HDL cholesterol. The relationship between these patterns and individual characteristics was assessed using latent class analysis with covariates. Three patterns of metabolic syndrome were identified: high metabolic expression, moderate metabolic expression, and low metabolic expression. The first two patterns represented most women (53.8%) in the study. Women with complete primary or secondary education and belonging to lower social classes were more likely to have higher metabolic expression. Black and mixed-race women were more likely to have moderate metabolic expression. Menopausal women aged 50 years and older were more often classified into patterns of greater health risk. This study addressed the heterogeneous nature of metabolic syndrome, identifying three distinct profiles for the syndrome among women. The combination of abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, and hypertension represents the main metabolic profile found among ELSA-Brasil participants. Sociodemographic and biological factors were important predictors of patterns of metabolic syndrome.

Hair mercury is associated with dyslipidemia and cardiovascular risk: An anthropometric, biochemical and genetic cross-sectional study of Amazonian vulnerable populations

This cross-sectional study evaluated the association between human exposure to mercury and cardiovascular risk using lipid profile (including apolipoproteins) and genetic analysis of Amazonian riverine population. Anthropometric data (gender, age, height, weight, blood pressure, and neck and waist circumferences) of the participants were recorded. Total mercury and methylmercury (MeHg) content were quantified in hair by ICP-MS and GC-pyro-AFS system. Polymorphisms rs662799, rs693, rs429358 and rs7412 (of genes of apolipoproteins A-V, B, and E at positions 112 and 158, respectively) were genotyped by real-time PCR. The population presented a dyslipidemia profile significantly correlated with high mercury levels. The apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-I (ApoB/ApoA-I) index was also positively correlated with mercury, supporting a possible causal relationship. Allelic distributions were similar to those described in other populations, suggesting that genetic susceptibility may not have a significant role in the lipid alterations found in this work. This study demonstrated for the first time: i) the relationship between mercury exposure and cardiovascular risk-related apolipoproteins in humans, ii) the ApoB levels and the ApoB/ApoA-I index as the risk factors more strongly associated to the mercury-related dyslipidemia in humans, and iii) the prevalence of high/moderate risk of acute myocardial infarction in the vulnerable and chronically exposed-populations of the Amazon, in addition to the genotypic profile of the three most frequent polymorphisms in apolipoproteins of relevance for cardiovascular risk. This early detection of lipid alterations is essential to prevent the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), especially in chronically exposed populations such as those found in the Amazon. Therefore, in addition to provide data for the Minamata Convention implementation, our work is in line with the efforts joined by all members of the World Health Organization committed to reducing premature deaths originating from non-communicable diseases by 25% in 2025, including CVD.

Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Brazilian adults in the last 10 years: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background

A cluster of interconnected cardiometabolic risk factors characterizes metabolic Syndrome (MS). The prevalence of MS is increasing worldwide, but there is not a meta-analysis of this prevalence in the Brazilian population. We aimed to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among adult general population in Brazil through a meta‑analysis study.

Methods

Original research studies were searched at PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO databases, from 2011 to 2021. We used the Joanna Briggs Institute tool to assess the quality of included studies. The random effect model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of MS. Subgroup and meta-regression analysis were conducted for explored heterogeneity and used the Funnel Plot and Egger’s test to assess publication bias. The study was performed based on the criteria of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA).

Results

The search in electronic databases identified 1598 records. From this total, 26 studies were eligible to be included in the final analysis. The overall pooled prevalence among the general population of Brazil was 33% with high heterogeneity observed. By gender, the prevalences were 26% in males and 38% in females. By criteria that was used to define MS, the prevalence were 31% in NCEP ATP III, 25% in JIS, 37% in IDF/NHLBI/AHA/WHF/IAS/IASO and 33% in IDF criteria. The prevalence in different habitat was 34% in urban, 15% in rural, 28% in quilombola and 37% in indigenous. In different regions was 37% in the South, 30% in Southeast, 38% in North, 31% in Northeast and 39% in Midwest. The pooled prevalence of MS with age was < 45 years: 43% and ≥ 45 years: 42% and the prevalence based on year of study implementation was 31% in 2015–2019, 35% in 2010–2014 and 28% in 2005–2009. There were no statistically significant differences between subgroups. Most of the studies showed high quality assessment criteria’s except adequate sample size criteria and many studies participants were not sampled in an appropriate way.

Conclusions

Our review indicates a high prevalence of MS in the healthy Brazilian adult population, when compared to others countries and with a world estimate.

Living in the Southern Hemisphere: Metabolic Syndrome and Its Components in Amazonian Riverine Populations

The metabolic syndrome (MetS) epidemic is a global challenge. Although developing countries (including Brazil, India, and South Africa) present a higher proportion of deaths by cardiovascular diseases than developed countries, most of our knowledge is from these developed countries. Amazonian riverine populations (ARP), as well as other vulnerable populations of the Southern Hemisphere, share low-income and traditional practices, among other features. This large cross-sectional study of ARP (n = 818) shows high prevalence of hypertension (51%) and obesity (23%). MetS was diagnosed in 38% of participants (especially in women and 60-69 years-old individuals) without the influence of ancestry. Only 7-8% of adults had no cardio-metabolic abnormalities related to MetS. Atherogenic dyslipidemia (low HDL-cholesterol) was generally observed, including in individuals without MetS. Still, slight differences were detected between settings with a clear predominance of hypertension in Tucuruí. Hypotheses on possible genetic influence and factors (nutrition transition and environmental pollutants -mercury) are proposed for future studies. Moreover, a roadmap to MetS progression based on the most prevalent components is provided for the development of tailored interventions in the Amazon (initially, individuals would present low HDL-cholesterol levels, later progressing to increased blood pressure characterizing hypertension, and ultimately reaching MetS with obesity). Our alarming results support the need to improve our knowledge on these vulnerable populations.

Predictors of Lipid Profile Abnormalities Among Patients with Metabolic Syndrome in Southwest Ethiopia: A Cross-Sectional Study

BACKGROUND

Lipid profile abnormalities are an integral part of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and major underlying causes of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Lipid profile abnormalities in a patient with MetS are resulted due to the presence of central obesity and insulin resistance. In Ethiopia, the burden and predictors of lipid profile abnormalities in a patient with MetS are not well known. Thus, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of lipid profile abnormalities and predictors among patients with MetS in southwest Ethiopia.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 381 patients with MetS from September to December 2019 with a response rate of 100%. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic and behavioral factors. Waist circumference, height, weight, and blood pressures were measured. The venous blood sample was collected for glucose and lipid profile determination. Data were entered and analyzed by using SPSS version 21. Binary logistic regression and Pearson's correlation analyses were performed. A p-value was set at a <0.05 for statistical significance.

RESULTS

In this study, about 58% of participants were at least one or more lipid profile abnormalities with the 95% CI (52.8-62.7). About 67.2%, 44.6%,18.4%, and 14.2% of study participants were low HDL, high TG, LDL, and TC, respectively. Central obesity (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 1.89, 95% CI: 1.14-3.14), increasing age (AOR: 2.08, 95% CI: 1.27-3.4), higher BMI (AOR: 2.06, 95% CI: 1.23-3.4), being hypertensive (AOR: 3.48, 95% CI: 2.12-5.7) and increasing blood glucose level (AOR: 2.34, 95% CI: 1.36-4.03) were independent predictors of lipid profile abnormalities (dyslipidemia).

CONCLUSION

In this study area, a high (58%) prevalence of dyslipidemia was observed in study participants, and increasing age, higher BMI, central obesity, hypertension, and high blood glucose level were identified as independent predictors of dyslipidemia among patients with MetS. Prevention and control of dyslipidemia and its predictors among patients with MetS were recommended.

Factores asociados con síndrome metabólico y calidad de vida de adultos en un municipio noreste de brasileño

Introducción: El Síndrome Metabólico (SM) se considera actualmente una enfermedad multifactorial relacionada con la inflamación asintomática, insidiosa y deletérea que predispone al individuo a la vulnerabilidad al agregar marcadores de riesgo cardiovascular. Objetivo: analizar los factores asociados al síndrome metabólico y calidad de vida en adultos usuarios de una unidad de salud. Materiales y Métodos: estudio transversal realizado con 108 usuarios adultos. La recogida de datos se realizó mediante un cuestionario sociodemográfico, clínico y metabólico, estructurado y mediante el cuestionario The Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Para el diagnóstico de Síndrome Metabólico se utilizaron los siguientes criterios: aumento de la circunferencia abdominal e hipertensión arterial, diabetes, hipertrigliceridemia y colesterol HDL bajo. El análisis estadístico se realizó utilizando el software Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 21.0. Resultados: Se identificó síndrome metabólico en el 88,0% de los adultos. De este total de usuarios evaluados con el síndrome, el 87,4% de los individuos eran mujeres; 71,7% con diabetes; 87,0% tenía hipertensión arterial; Se identificó sedentarismo en 53,7%. En la valoración del IMC, predominaron el sobrepeso y la obesidad en 68,4% y 24,9%, respectivamente. Los dominios con las puntuaciones más bajas de calidad de vida fueron Salud general y Vitalidad. Conclusiones: el estudio permitió identificar el Síndrome Metabólico en la mayoría de los adultos evaluados. Hubo una baja percepción de la calidad de vida entre los adultos en todos los dominios, excepto en los aspectos físicos y vitalidad. Por tanto, es necesaria la vigilancia y educación sanitaria de la población estudiada y la mejora de su calidad de vida. Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its associated risk factors among staffs in a Malaysian public university

Public health systems are concerned with the commensurate rise of metabolic syndrome (MetS) incidence across populations worldwide, due to its tendency to amplify greater risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases within communities. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of MetS and its associated risk factors among staffs in a Malaysian public university. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 538 staffs from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) between April and June 2019. MetS was defined according to JIS "Harmonized" criteria. A questionnaire that consisted of items on socio-demographics, lifestyle risk behaviors and personal medical history information was administered to participants. Subsequently, a series of physical examination and biochemical assessment was conducted at the hall or foyer of selected faculties in the university. Descriptive and inferential statistics were conducted using SPSS version 22.0. Multivariate models were yielded to determine the risk factors associated with MetS. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. The overall prevalence of MetS was 20.6%, with men having greater prevalence than women (24.9% vs. 18.3%). Prevalence of MetS increased with age. Factors contributed to MetS in the overall sample were BMI, hypertension, diabetes and physical activity of moderate intensity. Diabetes and hypertension were significantly associated with MetS in men, whereas BMI, diabetes and hyperlipidemia were significantly associated with MetS in women. Lifestyle behaviors and cardio-metabolic risk factors were associated with MetS for the overall sample, and across genders.

Risco cardiovascular aumentado e o papel da síndrome metabólica em idosos hipertensos

RESUMO Objetivo avaliar a síndrome metabólica e o risco cardiovascular de idosos hipertensos atendidos na atenção primária. Métodos estudo transversal realizado com 154 idosos hipertensos de uma Unidade Básica de Saúde do Distrito Federal. Um instrumento estruturado investigou o perfil dos idosos. Para a classificação da síndrome metabólica, consideraram-se os critérios propostos pela National Cholesterol Education Program – Adult Treatment Panel III. Para análise do risco cardiovascular, utilizou-se o escore de risco de Framingham. Foi realizada análise estatística e inferencial com a utilização da ANOVA, teste qui-quadrado e exato de Fisher, além da odds ratio e seu intervalo de confiança de 95% para estimar o risco cardiovascular entre os grupos. Resultados 64,9% dos idosos hipertensos eram obesos. Síndrome metabólica foi evidenciada em 70,8%. Observou-se que 27,2% apresentaram baixo, 46,8% moderado e 26,0% elevado risco cardiovascular, sendo que o sexo feminino e a idade avançada influenciaram negativamente o risco. Idosos com síndrome metabólica apresentaram 7,19 vezes mais chances de terem elevado risco cardiovascular. Considerações finais e implicações para a prática os idosos hipertensos apresentaram uma elevada prevalência de síndrome metabólica que aumentou significativamente o risco cardiovascular. Este resultado possibilita um melhor planejamento da assistência de enfermagem pelo enfermeiro da atenção primária à saúde.

Comparisons of conventional and novel anthropometric obesity indices to predict metabolic syndrome among vegetarians in Malaysia

Our study aimed to compare the ability of anthropometric obesity indices to predict MetS and to determine the sex-specific optimal cut-off values for MetS among Malaysian vegetarians. Body weight, height, waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), fasting venous blood sample were collected from 273 vegetarians in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The abilities of body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BF%), waist to height ratio (WHtR), lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI), a body shape index (ABSI), and body roundness index (BRI) to identify MetS were tested using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses. MetS was defined according to the Joint Interim Statement 2009. The ROC curve analyses show that BMI, BF%, WHtR, LAP and VAI were able to discriminate MetS in both sexes. LAP was a better predictor to predict MetS, followed by WHtR for male and female vegetarians. The suggested WHtR’s optimal cut-offs and LAP’s optimal cut-offs for MetS for male and female vegetarians were 0.541, 0.532, 41.435 and 21.743, respectively. In conclusion, LAP was a better predictor to predict MetS than other anthropometric obesity indices. However, WHtR could be an alternative obesity index in large epidemiology survey due to its convenient and cost-effective characteristics.

Level of leisure-time physical activity and its association with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in adults: a population-based study

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the associations between changes in the level of leisure-time physical activity in adults and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome.

METHODS

This is a population-based study conducted with 818 adults aged 20 years or older from Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil, between 2009 and 2014. We tested the association of maintenance and/or changes in the level of physical activity with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, adjusted for sociodemographic variables (gender, age, schooling, income, marital status, and ethnicity) and smoking habits. We used logistic regression and estimated the odds ratios (OR) and their respective confidence intervals (95%CI).

RESULTS

The overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 30.9% (95%CI 27.2-34.7). Regardless of adjustment variables, adults who ceased to be active and/or remained physically inactive during leisure time in the study period presented, respectively, 108 and 124% higher odds of developing metabolic syndrome (OR=2.08; 95%CI 1.30-3.33 and OR=2.24; 95%CI 1.38-3.65). Women and individuals younger than 45 years showed lower odds of having metabolic syndrome.

CONCLUSIONS

This sample presented a significant association between remaining or becoming inactive and a greater chance of developing metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic Syndrome and Its Associated Factors in Older Adults: A Secondary Analysis of SABE Colombia in 2015

Background: Understanding the metabolic syndrome (MetS) prevalence at the national level is important to develop effective programs and strategies to prevent and control MetS. This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of MetS according to gender and aging stage, and its association with potential factors in older individuals ≥60 years of age in Colombia. Methods: The data for this study came from a secondary cross-sectional, nationally representative SABE study Survey on Health, Well-Being, and Aging in Colombia, 2015. A total of 1637 participants (60.7% women, 70.5 ± 7.9 years) from 86 Colombian municipalities participated. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demography, lifestyle, and self-report medical conditions. Measurements included anthropometric (weight, waist circumference, body mass index), sarcopenia "proxy" status (calf circumference) handgrip strength levels, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, and blood pressure. Univariate and multiple regression models were established as part of the main analysis. Results: Using the harmonized Joint Scientific Statement criteria, MetS was present in 54.9% of the study population, with a higher prevalence among females than males (59.8% vs. 47.3%). Individuals who were cigarette smokers (odds ratio [OR] = 1.5; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.0-2.4; P = 0.034), female gender (OR = 1.3; 95% CI = 1.0-1.8; P = 0.020), and sarcopenia "proxy" (OR = 1.6; 95% CI = 1.0-2.5; P = 0.026) were more likely to have a higher prevalence estimate of MetS, after controlling for relevant covariates. Conclusions: Overall prevalence of MetS among older adults in Colombia is high. Smoking, female gender, and sarcopenia "proxy" status are associated with MetS. These results suggested that MetS is still a serious public burden in Colombia, and screening for promotion of healthy lifestyle and nutrition counseling should be offered routinely in old age.

Metabolic syndrome: physical inactivity and socioeconomic inequalities among non-institutionalized Brazilian elderly

OBJECTIVE

Evaluate the association between Metabolic Syndrome (MetS), physical activity and socioeconomic conditions among non-institutionalized elderly individuals.

METHODOLOGY

Cross-sectional study with, elderly individuals (≥ 60) living in the city of São Paulo. MetS was evaluated by means of the National Cholesterol Education Program criteria, the Adult Treatment Panel III. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed, followed by multiple logistic regression with a 5% significance level. An attributable fraction (AF) and a proportional attributable fraction (PAF) were calculated in relation to physical activity. The magnitude of the socioeconomic inequalities was evaluated using the Slope Index of Inequality (SII) and the Relative Index of Inequality (RII).

RESULTS

The prevalence of MetS was 40.1%, and 23.3% of the individuals had at least one MetS' component. Physically inactive elderly had higher chances of having MetS. The prevalence of MetS was higher among those with lower education levels in both absolute and relative terms. AF and PAF were significant among the inactive individuals and for the total population.

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrated that physical activity and schooling are significantly associated with MetS, highlighting the importance of these factors for the control of this syndrome.

Mapping carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition of fingernails to demonstrate a rural-urban nutrition transition in the Center-West, Northeast, and Amazon regions of Brazil

OBJECTIVE

The main objective of this study is to investigate diet patterns among rural and urban populations of the Center-West, Northeast, and Amazon regions of Brazil through the carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition of fingernails, recognizing that the extent of market integration is a key driver of food consumption.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In the Center-West, Northeast, and Amazon regions of Brazil, fingernails were sampled in clusters encompassing a major city, town, and rural village. A total of 2,133 fingernails were analyzed. Fingernails were clipped by donors using fingernail clippers. In the laboratory, samples were cleaned then weighed in small tin capsules before being isotopically analyzed for carbon and nitrogen.

RESULTS

The overall mean δ¹³ C and δ¹⁵ N were -19.7 ± 2.8‰ and 10.6 ± 1.1‰, respectively. In the more remote villages, where access to food markets is more challenging, lower δ¹³ C prevails, suggesting that Brazilian staple foods (rice, beans, and farinha) still dominate. In areas with easier access to food markets, δ¹³ C values were higher, suggesting a change to a diet based on C₄ plants, typical of a Brazilian supermarket diet. The variability among inhabitants in the same location expressed by a significant inverse correlation between δ¹³ C and δ¹⁵ N fingernail values suggested that "market integration" does not affect everyone equally in each community.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

The nutrition transition has not yet reached some remote villages in these regions of Brazil or that the nutrition transition has not yet reached all residents of these remote villages. On the other hand, in several villages there is a considerable adherence to the supermarket diet or that some residents of these villages are already favoring processed food.

Diets high in vegetables, fruits, cereals, and tubers as a protective factor for metabolic syndrome in bank employees

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is increasing, and its development may be related to westernized diets and working conditions.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of dietary patterns in bank employees with the presence of MetS, considering sociodemographic and behavioral factors as well as laboratory tests.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

This was a cross-sectional study of 515 bankers. Sociodemographic, occupational, behavioral, and food consumption data were collected. Dietary patterns were determined by principal component analysis with orthogonal varimax rotation.

RESULTS

The dietary pattern of vegetables, fruits, cereals, and tubers was correlated with the presence of MetS and with waist circumference measurements and triglyceride levels. Individuals in the third and fifth quintiles of the pattern "vegetables, fruits, cereals, and tubers" presented with 3.28 and 2.24 times less chances of MetS when compared to individuals in the first quintile of this dietary pattern (OR 0.30, 95% CI 0.13-0.67, and OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.21-0.92, respectively). Subjects over 45 years of age were almost twice as likely to develop MetS (OR 1.95, 95% CI 1.01-3.77).

CONCLUSION

Healthy eating represented by the dietary pattern "vegetables, fruits, cereals, and tubers" was associated with better health among bank employees, especially when evaluating competing metabolic complications such as MetS.

In the Heart of the Amazon: Noncommunicable Diseases and Apolipoprotein E4 Genotype in the Riverine Population

The Amazon River basin is the largest tropical forest in the world. Most of the Amazon belongs to Brazil, a developing country that currently faces huge challenges related to the consolidation of its universal healthcare system. Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death in Brazil, accounting for 74% of all deaths, and NCDs are probably underestimated in Amazonian population because of their geographical isolation and the precariousness of riverine communities. Important risk factors, such as genetic susceptibility, remain undetermined in the riverine population. This study performed fasting blood sugar (FBS) and blood pressure measurements and investigated the presence of the ε4 allele of apolipoprotein E (APOE4) to determine the prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and the genetic risk of NCDs. FBS and APOE4 were measured in blood samples from 763 participants using spectrometry and real-time PCR; 67.5% showed altered measurements, and 57.9% had never been diagnosed or treated. Altered FBS was found in 28.3% of the participants, hypertension in 57.6% and APOE4 in 32.0%. The health profile of the riverine population appears to differ from that of urban population in the Amazon. Additional risk factors for NCDs, such as environmental contamination and nutritional transition, may contribute more than increased genetic susceptibility to the prevalence of altered FBS and hypertension. Our results will help guide the development of preventive strategies and governmental actions for more effective management of NCDs in the Amazon area.

Association between Exercise and Metabolic Syndrome in Koreans

Background

The favorable role of exercise on metabolic syndrome is well established; however, there is a lack of consistent epidemiological data. Thus, we analyzed the association between exercise intensity and metabolic syndrome using data from the Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007–2009).

Methods

A total of 10,533 Korean individuals were screened. Exercise amount and intensity were assessed from questionnaire responses. Subjects were divided into three groups according to exercise intensity: no activity (n=607), walking only without intense exercise (n=2,336), and moderate to vigorous activity with or without walking (n=3,855). Logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the associations between exercise intensity and metabolic syndrome.

Results

The overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 22.3% (total n=6,798). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 20.4% for the intense exercise group, 24.0% for the walking only group, and 29.9% for the no activity group (P<0.001). The intense exercise group had a significantly lower odds ratio for the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components, especially abdominal obesity and hypertriglyceridemia, but not for blood pressure. Interestingly, there were no negative associations identified within the walking only group, other than prevalence of metabolic syndrome itself. The risk of hyperglycemia was slightly lower in the walking group compared to the no activity group but disappeared after multiple adjustments.

Conclusion

A strong inverse relationship between metabolic syndrome and moderate to vigorous intensity exercise was identified, which may reflect a protective effect of intense exercise, but not walking, on metabolic syndrome. Further prospective studies are needed to consolidate our findings.

A Common Variation in the Caveolin 1 Gene Is Associated with High Serum Triglycerides and Metabolic Syndrome in an Admixed Latin American Population

Background: The caveolin 1 (CAV1) gene has been associated with metabolic traits in animal models and human cohorts. Recently, a prevalent variant in CAV1 has been found to be related to metabolic syndrome in Hispanics living in North America. Since Hispanics represent an admixed population at high risk for cardiovascular diseases, in this study a Latin American population with a similar genetic background was assessed.

Objective: To analyze a genetic association between CAV1 and metabolic traits in an admixed Latin American population.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with adults from the Colombian Caribbean Coast, selected in urban clusters and work places through a stratified sampling to include diverse ages and socioeconomic groups. Blood pressure and waist circumference were registered. Serum concentrations of glucose, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were measured from an 8-hr fasting whole-blood sample. Two previously analyzed CAV1 single nucleotide polymorphisms were genotyped (rs926198 and rs11773845). A logistic regression model was applied to estimate the associations. An admixture adjustment was performed through a Bayesian model.

Results: A total of 605 subjects were included. rs11773845 was associated with hypertriglyceridemia [odds ratio (OR) = 1.33, p = 0.001] and the metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.53, p = 0.02). When admixture adjustment was performed these genetic associations preserved their statistical significance. There were no significant associations between rs926198 and metabolic traits.

Conclusions: The CAV1 variation rs11773845 was found to be consistently associated with high serum triglycerides and the metabolic syndrome. This is the first report of a relationship between CAV1 variants and serum triglycerides in Latin America.

Effectiveness of a bioactive food compound in anthropometric measures of individuals with HIV/AIDS: A nonrandomized trial

Background

Highly Active Antiretroviral therapy (HAART) promotes anthropometric changes in lipid metabolism and glucose in patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Functional foods play an important role on metabolism. Bioactive Food Compound (BFC) has shown effective results in changes arising from decompensated lipid metabolism due to the effects of HAART on HIV patients. From this perspective, the objective of this study is to evaluate anthropometric indicators and the body composition of patients undergoing HAART before and after consumption of BFC.

Methods

This is a prospective intervention with 180 individuals with HIV undergoing HAART. They formed two groups and were monitored for 3 months: the first group consisted of individuals who consumed BFC (n = 121) at the recommended daily intake of 40 g. The second group consisted of individuals who did not consume BFC (n = 59). We determined body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), conicity index (CI) and antiretroviral regimen used by the patients.

Results

The BMI among adults (p<0.001), the WC (p<0.001 and p<0.014 for men and women, respectively) and the CI (p = 0.001 and p<0.001 for men and women, respectively) increased at the end of the study in the group of individuals who did not consume BFC and remained stable in the BFC group. There were no changes in WHR in any of the groups evaluated. Regarding the antiretroviral regimens used, we observed that there was no difference between regimens as for BMI, WC, WHR and CI.

Conclusions

The BFC consumed by HIV patients undergoing HAART allowed the maintenance of anthropometric measures without increasing the mean values of conicity index, suggesting that the consumption of this bioactive compound protects the individual against the development of metabolic syndrome (MeS) in patients infected with HIV undergoing antiretroviral therapy.
