Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the longitudinal association of sleep with physical performance in a representative sample of non-institutionalised older adults residing in the municipality of São Paulo, Brazil. STUDY DESIGN Prospective cohort study. METHODS The current longitudinal study used data extracted from the Health, Well-being, and Aging Study (Estudo Saúde Bem-Estar e Envelhecimento [SABE]). The study population consisted of individuals aged ≥60 years who participated in the study in 2010 or 2015. Dependent variables included the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and gait speed. Independent variables of interest were self-reported sleep difficulty, daytime sleepiness and sleep quality. The longitudinal association between sleep variables and the outcomes was evaluated using Generalised Estimating Equations (GEE) Models adjusted for covariates. All the variables, except age, sex and schooling, were assessed at baseline and follow-up visits (2010 and 2015). RESULTS The analyses included 2205 observations from 1559 individuals. The population mean age was 72 years in 2010 and 71 years in 2015, with a higher prevalence of women in both years. Between 2010 and 2015, there was a decline in the SPPB score and gait speed. Daytime sleepiness was negatively associated with the SPPB score [Coef.: -0.38 (95% confidence interval {CI}: -0.56, -0.21)] and gait speed [Coef.: -0.03 (95% CI: -0.05, -0.01)]. Poor sleep quality was negatively associated with the SPPB score [Coef.: -0.29 (95% CI: -0.57, -0.01)] and gait speed [Coef.: -0.03 (95% CI: -0.06, -0.00)]. CONCLUSIONS Daytime sleepiness and poor sleep quality are associated with compromised physical performance in non-institutionalised older adults, and this association remained consistent over time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the association between sleep duration and muscle quality index (MQI) in middle-aged and older age groups, as limited evidence exists on this topic. METHODS In order to assess the relationship between sleep duration and MQI, a cross-sectional study was undertaken, utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) acquired during the period from 2011 to 2014. The study comprised a total of 4598 participants aged 20 years and above. To examine the association between sleep duration and MQI, sophisticated weighted multivariate linear regression models were employed. Additionally, smooth curve fitting techniques were applied to examine the possibility of any non-linear relationship between the two variables. RESULTS The average age of the adults who were enrolled in the study was 38.48±11.69 years, and 46.75% of them were female. The results of the multivariable linear regression models showed that sleep duration had a positive correlation with MQI. However, when subgroup analysis was conducted, it was found that this positive correlation only existed among women (β = 0.09, 95% CI: 0.014 to 0.167). To further confirm the differences between sexes in the relationship between sleep duration and MQI, a weighted generalized additive model (GAM) was used. CONCLUSIONS This research study provides evidence that there is a positive correlation between the duration of sleep and MQI specifically in females, while no such association was observed in males. These findings shed light on the existence of gender disparities in the connection between sleep duration and MQI.

Abstract
PURPOSE Physical disabilities may exacerbate the natural decline in sleep quality that occurs with aging. In the current study, we assessed sleep quality and medicinal sleep aid use among 87 community-dwelling older adults with (n = 24) and without (n = 63) physical disabilities. METHOD Sleep quality, duration, and efficiency were assessed subjectively with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Sleep duration and efficiency were objectively measured with actigraphy. Participants self-reported medicinal sleep aid use. RESULTS Significant group differences were observed in sleep duration measured objectively (p = 0.01) and subjectively (p = 0.04). No other group differences were observed for sleep factors (p > 0.05) or medicinal sleep aid use (p = 0.41). CONCLUSION Findings show that physical disability may be a factor in sleep duration; however, physical disability was not found to be associated with worsened sleep perception or greater reliance on medicinal sleep aids. Future research should consider longer objective actigraphy assessment windows and explore potential subgroup differences in sex and race/ethnicity. Abstract
Aim Abnormalities in sleep patterns are a common health problem for the older adults. The relationship between sarcopenia and sleep duration in older people is controversial. This research is to examine the association between sleep duration and sarcopenia. Methods We drew 21,095 adults from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS). Not only we explore the relationship between sleep duration and sarcopenia, but also compare sleep duration to three sarcopenia subcomponents. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis was conducted by the gender and residence area to ascertain the discrepancy, separately. Finally, using restricted cubic spline to find the non-linear association between them. Results Among 7,342 community older adults engaged by CHARLS in 2015, the incidence of possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia was 23.14 and 11.30%, separately. Sleep duration (≤6 h) [OR(95%CI) = 1.30(1.03-1.65), p < 0.05] and (≥8 h) [OR(95%CI) = 1.33(1.05-1.69), p < 0.05] were significantly linked with possible sarcopenia, while long sleep duration (≥8 h) [OR(95%CI) = 1.41(1.01-2.02), p < 0.05] was correlated strongly with sarcopenia. A non-linear relationship (U-shaped) between sarcopenia risk and sleep duration was found (p for non-linear = 0.009). Conclusions Our findings highlight the importance of sleep duration in the onset of sarcopenia and might assist older persons to maintain good sleeping habits.

Abstract
Testicular torsion is a serious urologic emergency that can present with unusual or atypical history and examination. Classical pain from testicular torsion is of sudden onset, significantly severe, and is accompanied by nausea and vomiting. However, in some patients, the initial scrotal pain appears to considerably subside within the next few hours. In others, testicular torsion tends to occur while sleeping, and many patients recount a history of being woken up from sleep by intense pain. Furthermore, some patients in this subset can resume normal activities and even sleep through the night with little or no discomfort, without a perceived need for pain medications. Other patients initially experience mild pain, which worsens over time. Consequently, these patients are less likely to be evaluated immediately. In view of these atypical cases, the question remains unanswered regarding sleep as a predisposing factor for testicular torsion. This narrative review focuses on exploring the association between sleep and testicular torsion.

Abstract
Handgrip strength has been shown an indispensable biomarker for older adults. Furthermore, the association between sleep duration and grip strength in special populations (e.g., type 2 diabetics) has been previously documented. However, the association between sleep duration and grip strength has been less studied in older adults and the dose-response relationship is unclear. Therefore, we drew 1881 participants aged 60 years and older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014 to explore their association and the dose-response relationship. Sleep duration was obtained through self-report. Grip strength data were obtained through a grip test using a handgrip dynamometer and divided into two categories: low grip strength and normal grip strength. Thus, dichotomized grip strength was used as a dependent variable. Poisson regression and restricted cubic spline were used for the main part of the analysis. We found that long sleep duration (≥9 h) was associated with a higher prevalence of low grip strength than the normal sleep duration (7-<9 h) group (IRR: 1.38, 95% CI: 1.12-1.69). Moreover, the gender-stratified analysis did not change the original results. This association was particularly pronounced and further strengthened among participants with normal weight (BMI < 25) (IRR: 2.30, 95% CI: 1.64-3.22) and participants aged 60-70 (IRR: 1.76, 95% CI: 1.40-2.22). In addition, with the increase in sleep duration, the multivariate-adjusted IRRs of low grip strength had a general downward trend at first, followed by a brief period of stability, and then presented an upward trend (p-value for non-linearity = 0.001). According to this study, we found that older adults who had long sleep duration had a higher risk of low grip strength. Muscle insulin utilization and muscle glucose metabolism are closely related to grip strength, so our research emphasizes the importance of maintaining normal sleep duration in older adults and suggests that older adults who sleep for a long period should pay more attention to their muscle health.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to examine the association between sleep duration and quality and sarcopenia, assessed by factors such as low muscle mass (LMM), low muscle strength (LMS), and low physical performance (LPP) among older community-dwellers in Japan. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, a total of 2,069 (men, 902; women, 1,167) participants aged 65 to 80 years were included. Sarcopenia and each low physical function were defined using the definitions of the Asian Working Groups of Sarcopenia 2019. Sleep duration was stratified into three categories: short sleep (<6 h), normal sleep (6-8 h), and long sleep (>8 h). Sleep quality was classified into two groups based on 8-item Athens Insomnia Scale score: insomnia (≥6), and non-insomnia (<6). We analyzed the association between sleep parameters and sarcopenia, including low physical functions, by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Compared to normal sleepers, long sleepers had a positive association with sarcopenia (odds ratio [OR] 2.11, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.25-3.58). In particular, long sleep was strongly associated with LMS (OR 1.77, 95%CI 1.07-2.94) and LPP (OR 1.90, 95%CI 1.25-2.88). On the other hand, poor sleep quality was not associated with sarcopenia in long sleepers, but in normal sleepers. CONCLUSIONS Long sleep was associated with sarcopenia, including LMS and LPP. However, in long sleepers, insomnia was not associated with sarcopenia or any of its components.

Abstract
Objective: We aimed to determine whether the association of sleep status with frailty differs between age groups of older adults. Method: This cross-sectional study was part of the observational Septuagenarians, Octogenarians, Nonagenarians Investigation with Centenarians (SONIC) study. Subjects were community-dwelling older adults in their 70s and 80s. Frailty was evaluated using the Japanese version of the Cardiovascular Health Study criteria (J-CHS). Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep status. Poor sleep quality was defined as a PSQI global score ≥6. Sleep duration was categorized as short (<6 hr), normal (6-8), and long (>8). We performed multivariable logistic regression to investigate the association between sleep status and frailty separately for each age group adjusted for multiple covariates. Results: In those in their 70s, long sleep duration and sleep medication use were independently associated with frailty. In those in their 80s, poor sleep quality was independently associated with frailty. Conclusions: The association between sleep status and frailty was different between age groups. The findings underscore the importance of incorporating the evaluation of sleep quantity and non-pharmacological therapies in those in their 70s and the evaluation of sleep quality in those in their 80s to help prevent the onset of frailty.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Falls are the leading cause of injury-related morbidity and mortality among older adults (aged ≥65 years) worldwide. However, previous studies examining sleep and falls were confined to community subpopulations, and few studies included both sleep quality and sleep duration when discussing risk factors of falls. This nationwide representative study aimed to examine the links between sleep duration, sleep quality and falls among Chinese community-dwelling older adults. METHOD Cross-sectional analyses were conducted with 14,681 older individuals (aged ≥65 years) from 23 Chinese provinces from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy and Longevity Study (CLHLS) in 2018. Individual variables, including sociodemographic factors, lifestyle, and behavioral factors, were measured using a self-reported questionnaire. Falls were confirmed through face-to-face interviews. Three multivariate logistic regression models were conducted to assess the association between sleep duration and sleep quality with falls. RESULTS There were 21.7% (95%CI: 21.0-22.4%) participants who had experienced falls in the past year. After controlling demographic and individual variables, falls in older adults were associated with self-reported sleep quality and self-reported sleep duration. Those who reported poor sleep quality were more likely to fall (OR = 1.149; 95%CI = 1.004,1.316). Participants who reported sleep duration that was too short (<5) (OR = 1.349; 95% CI = 1.191 to 1.528) or too long (>8) (OR = 1.267; 95% CI = 1.151 to 1.394) were both associated with higher fall prevalence. CONCLUSION Nearly one-fifth of older adults in this study had experienced falls in the past year. The study found that falls were significantly associated with less sleep duration, longer sleep duration, and overall poor sleep quality among the old Chinese population.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the association between night-time sleep duration and hand grip strength (HGS) among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Participants aged ≥45 years were included in a nationally representative investigation clinical study in 2015. HGS was measured using dynamometers. The data on night-time sleep duration, sociodemographic information, and health-related variables were systematically collected. For analysis, sleep duration was categorized as <5 h, 5-7 h, 7 h, 7-9 h, and >9 h. Multivariable linear regression models were used to determine the possible association between the night-time sleep duration and HGS. Our results indicated that the shortest (<5 h) or the longest sleep duration (>9 h) was relevant to high risk of weaker HGS in females. In males, the shortest (<5 h) sleep duration was correlated to lower HGS. Thus, our findings clearly suggest that health care providers should focus on the potential influence of sleep duration on HGS among COPD patients.

Abstract
AIM We investigated the relationship between physical activity and sleep status among older adults requiring nursing care in the community. METHOD We included 45 participants ≥65 years old (33 females; mean age, 83.2±4.4 years old) requiring nursing care. Physical activity was evaluated using the Life Space Assessment (LSA), and sleep status was measured by the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to determine the total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and PSQI total score. The physical function was measured by the timed up and go test (TUG) and grip strength. We performed a multiple regression analysis with the LSA as the dependent variable and sleep indicators (total sleep time, sleep efficiency, PSQI total score) and TUG as independent variables (demonstrating significant correlations with the LSA), and gender and age as adjusted variables. The analysis was divided into sleep time (Model 1), sleep efficiency (Model 2), and PSQI total score (Model 3). We used R commander, and < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS TUG (β=-0.375) and sleep time (β=0.383) in Model 1, TUG (β=-0.368) and sleep efficiency (β=0.570) in Model 2, and TUG (β=-0.392) and PSQI total score (β=-0.590) in Model 3 were independently selected as significant variables. CONCLUSION In addition to TUG, sleep status, such as the sleep duration and sleep quality, was shown to be related to physical activity in older adults who require nursing care. To improve physical activity, it is necessary to consider not only the physical function but also quantitative and qualitative assessments of sleep.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few longitudinal studies have explored exploring the relationship between sleep duration and sarcopenia. Evidence concerning the relationship between sleep duration and sarcopenia is limited and inconsistent. The purpose of this 3-year prospective study was to explore whether sleep duration was associated with sarcopenia onset in suburb-dwelling older Chinese individuals. METHODS This was a prospective study that included 754 Chinese suburb-dwelling men and women aged ≥60 years (men n=327, mean age 65.24± 4.87 years) who were not initially diagnosed with sarcopenia. We defined sarcopenia using the diagnostic algorithm recommended by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. Self-reported sleep duration was a component of the interview measured by trained interviewers. Subjects were categorized into 3 groups at baseline [short: <6 h, medium: 6-8 h, and long: >8 h]. RESULTS The incidence of sarcopenia during the 3-year follow-up was 12.2%. Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that after adjustments for potential confounders long sleep duration was independently associated with sarcopenia incidence from baseline through the 3-year follow-up: when using the 6-8 h sleep duration group as a reference, the adjusted ORs for sarcopenia of the groups who slept <6 and >8 hours were 2.74 (95% CI 1.05-7.13) and 1.84 (95% CI 1.07-3.14). CONCLUSION Both short and long sleep durations were associated with a greater incidence of sarcopenia. Thus, sleep duration should be considered when developing prevention and management strategies for sarcopenia.

Abstract
Objective: To determine the link between physical fitness and body composition with nocturnal and nap time in Spanish older adults. Methods: Eight hundred thirty older adults underwent several tests. Sleep was measured using Jenkins Sleep Scale. Nocturnal sleep was categorized (<7, 7-9, and >9 hours), and nap time (no nap, 1-30 minutes, and >30 minutes).Physical fitness was evaluated using validated tests, and body composition by electric bioimpedance. Results: 75.1% of participants were female, mean age 77.7 ± 5.1 years. Mean nocturnal sleep and nap time was 6.7 hours and 23.3 minutes, respectively. Models showed nocturnal sleep >9 hours was significant and positively associated with body shape index (Odds ratio[OR] = 4.07 (p = .011)) and waist circumference OR = 1.04 (p = .024) in females. Males' waist and hip circumference were positively significantly related to nap time between 1 and 30 minutes, OR = 1.08, p = .009 and OR = 1.08, p = .048, respectively. In females, nap time >30 minutes was associated with greater fat mass and body shape index OR = 1.22, p = .032 and OR = 3.95, p = .027, respectively. Physical fitness showed no associations with sleep outcomes. Conclusions: Sleep patterns do not influence physical fitness but body composition, being more related to female body composition as nocturnal and nap sleep were associated with higher fat mass, waist circumference and body shape index, while only short nap times were related to higher waist and hip circumference in males.

Abstract
Background: The promotion of healthy aging is one of the major challenges for healthcare systems in current times. The present study investigates the effects of a standardized physical activity intervention for older adults on cognitive capacity, self-reported health, fear of falls, balance, leg strength and gait under consideration of movement biography, sleep duration, and current activity behavior. Methods: This single-blinded, randomized controlled trial included 49 community-dwelling older adults (36 women; 82.9 ± 4.5 years of age (Mean [M] ± SD); intervention group = 25; control group = 24). Movement biography, sleep duration, cognitive capacity, self-reported health status, and fear of falls were assessed by means of questionnaires. Leg strength, gait, and current activity levels were captured using a pressure plate, accelerometers, and conducting the functional-reach and chair-rising-test. The multicomponent intervention took place twice a week for 45 min and lasted 16 weeks. Sub-cohorts of different sleep duration were formed to distinguish between intervention effects and benefits of healthy sleep durations. Change scores were evaluated in univariate analyses of covariances (ANCOVAs) between groups and sub-cohorts of different sleep duration in both groups. Changes in cognitive capacity, self-reported health, fear of falls, balance, leg strength, and gait were investigated using the respective baseline values, movement biography, and current activity levels as covariates. Analysis was by intention-to-treat (ITT). Results: We found sub-cohort differences in cognitive capacity change scores [F (3,48) = 5.498, p = 0.003, ηp 2 = 0.287]. Effects on fear of falls [F (1,48) = 12.961, p = 0.001, ηp 2 = 0.240] and balance change scores F (1,48) = 4.521, p = 0.040, ηp 2 = (0.099) were modified by the level of current activity. Effects on gait cadence were modified by the movement biography [F (1,48) = 4.545; p = 0.039, ηp 2 = 0.100]. Conclusions: Unlike for functional outcomes, our multicomponent intervention in combination with adequate sleep duration appears to provide combinable beneficial effects for cognitive capacity in older adults. Trainability of gait, fear of falls, and flexibility seems to be affected by movement biography and current physical activity levels. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effect of physical performance on the relationship between night sleep duration and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in elderly Chinese without CVD. METHODS 782 participants without CVD over 65 years (average: 70.82±3.86 years, 448 women) were included in this study. CVD risk was calculated by the Framingham Risk Score and participants were divided into four groups of night sleep duration (in hours): <7 hours, ≥7-8 hours, >8-9 hours and >9 hours. Upper extremity function was measured by grip strength and lower extremity function was measured by the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), consisting of balance, 4 m walk and chair stands tests. RESULTS After adjusting for covariates, long night sleep duration (>9 hours) and CVD risk were significantly positively associated compared with moderate night sleep duration (≥7-8 hours) (β=1.152; 95% CI 0.05 to 2.25). SPPB total score (indirect effect ab=-0.122; 95% CI -0.291 to -0.0008) rather than grip strength partially mediated the relationship between long night sleep duration and CVD risk, in which chair stands played a major mediating role (indirect effect ab=-0.171; 95% CI -0.040 to -0.0006), while balance (indirect effect ab=-0.016; 95% CI -0.100 to 0.063) and 4 m walk (indirect effect ab=0.048; 95% CI -0.066 to 0.201) did not. CONCLUSIONS Lower extremity function, especially lower limb muscle strength, partially mediates a positive association between long night sleep duration and CVD risk in the elderly without CVD. Suitable interventions for physical performance and sleep may minimise the risk of subsequent CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hospitalized older intensive care unit (ICU) survivors are often inactive and experience sleep disturbances. OBJECTIVE We explored associations between post-ICU activity, sleep/rest, and motor function among hospitalized older ICU survivors. METHODS We enrolled 30 older ICU survivors, ages 65 and older, within 24-48 h of ICU discharge. Actigraphy measured post-ICU activity and sleep/rest. Selected measures from the National Institutes of Health Toolbox Motor Battery assessed grip strength and dexterity. Multivariate regression examined associations between post-ICU activity, sleep/rest, and motor function, adjusting for covariates. RESULTS Lower daytime activity (β = 0.258, p = .035) and greater daytime sleep/rest (β = -0.295, p = .022) were associated with worse grip strength. Lower daytime activity (β = -0.376, p = .037) and greater daytime sleep/rest (β = 0.409, p = .026) were associated with worse dexterity. CONCLUSION Post-ICU inactivity and prolonged rest periods are associated with worse motor function in hospitalized older ICU survivors.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Examine the association between trajectories of self-reported insomnia symptoms and sleep duration over 13 years with objective physical function. METHODS We utilized data from 1627 Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) participants, aged 61.9±2.7 y at the end of the 13-y follow-up. Latent class growth models identified trajectories of insomnia symptoms (trouble falling asleep, frequent night-time awakenings, and/or early-morning awakening) and sleep duration over 13 y. Physical function tests were performed at the end of the 13-y period: 40-ft walk, 4-m walk, repeated chair stand, grip strength, and balance. Multivariable regression analyses examined each physical function measure according to the insomnia symptom or sleep duration trajectory group. RESULTS Five insomnia symptom trajectories and two sleep duration trajectories were identified. Women with a consistently high likelihood of insomnia symptoms and women with a decreased likelihood of insomnia symptoms (i.e., improving) had slower gait speed (3.5% slower 40-ft walk [consistently high], 3.7% slower 4-m walk [improving]; each P≤.05) than those with a consistently low likelihood of insomnia symptoms. In contrast, women with a steep increase in the likelihood of insomnia symptoms over time and women with persistent insufficient sleep duration had lower odds of having a balance problem (odds ratio [OR]=0.36 and OR=0.61, respectively; each P<.02) compared to those with a consistently low likelihood of insomnia symptoms and those with persistent sufficient sleep duration, respectively. CONCLUSION These results suggest that women's sleep during midlife has important implications for maintaining physical function during the transition into older adulthood.

Abstract
China has faced challenges related to the rapid growth of its ageing population, and sleep is one of the public health challenges to this demographic group. This study examines the socio-demographic and behavioural factors associated with status change of sleeping patterns among Chinese older adults, using longitudinal data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Socio-demographic factors were selected from the 2012 wave of the CLHLS to examine the sleep status change in the 2014 wave. Multivariable logistic and multinomial regressions were used to study older adults’ changes of sleep quality and daily sleep duration. Older adults, 65 years old or above, were selected as study participants. A higher level of education was negatively associated with poor sleep quality and longer sleep duration (>8 hours). Increasing age was positively associated with both shorter and longer sleep duration. Being female was negatively associated with longer sleep duration. However, exercise status, smoking behaviour and alcohol use all were neither positively nor negatively associated with status change of sleeping patterns. Participants’ education, age and gender might be important factors associated with sleep status change. However, the effects of behavioural factors should be studied further. Policy implications and further research directions are discussed based on empirical results.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the quality of sleep in caregivers of patients with advanced cancer receiving home palliative care, basing the analysis on subjective and objective measures, and to develop a predictive model of sleep disturbances among this population. METHOD A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in six clinical management units within primary healthcare centres. Data were obtained during a period of six months, from a sample population of 41 caregivers. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and a 7-day accelerometry evaluation were performed to assess sleep quality. Daytime sleepiness, caregiver strain and quality of life were also evaluated. RESULTS According to the PSQI, 90.2% of participants had poor sleep quality. The average duration of night-time sleep, measured by accelerometry and the PSQI, was 6 h. Taking PSQI as the dependent variable, the study model predicted 40.7% of the variability (p < 0.01). The variables "Caregiver strain" and "Daily hours dedicated to care" produced the following results: B coefficient 0.645; p = 0.001; and B coefficient 0.230; p = 0.010, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The caregivers presented significant health-related alterations, including sleep disturbances, which were directly related to two variables: the index of caregiver strain and the number of hours per day dedicated to providing care.

Abstract
Physical inactivity and sleep disturbances are major problems in an ageing society. There is increasing evidence that physical activity is associated with sleep quality. However, the association between daily walking steps and sleep remain unclear. This prospective study examined the relationship between objectively measured daily walking steps and sleep parameters in Japanese community-dwelling older adults. In total, 855 community-dwelling individuals aged 65 and above, with an uninterrupted follow-up from August 2015 to March 2016, were enrolled. The participants wore a wristband sensor for an average of 7.8 days every three months. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to examine the relationship between daily walking steps and sleep parameters, including the total sleep time, sleep efficiency, time awake after sleep onset (WASO), awakening time count during the night, and naptime. The median (interquartile range, IQR) age of the participants was 73 (69–78) years, with 317 (37.1%) men and 538 (62.9%) women. The median (IQR) educational level was 12 (11–12) years, and the median (IQR) Mini-Mental State Examination score was 29 (27–30) points. The number of daily walking steps showed a positive correlation with sleep efficiency and an inverse correlation with WASO, awakening time count, and naptime, after adjusting for covariates and correcting for the false discovery rate (β = 0.098, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.034 to 0.162, p = 0.003; β = −0.107, 95% CI: −0.172 to −0.043, p = 0.001; β = −0.105, 95% CI: −0.17 to −0.04, p = 0.002; and β = −0.31, 95% CI: −0.371 to −0.249, p < 0.001, respectively). Our results can help promote walking as an intervention for preventing sleep disturbances in community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep is associated with worse motor function in older adults. Sleep may affect motor function specifically among older adults recovering from critical illness after transfer out of an intensive care unit (ICU). OBJECTIVES Describe motor function (grip strength) of older ICU survivors and explore relationships between sleep and ICU-acquired weakness in the early post-ICU transition period. METHODS We enrolled 30 older adults who were functionally independent prior to hospitalization, mechanically ventilated while in ICU, and within 24-48 hours post-ICU discharge. Handgrip dynamometry assessed post-ICU motor function (fully corrected T score on the National Institutes of Health Motor Battery Grip Strength Test). Actigraphy estimated post-ICU sleep duration (total sleep time [TST]) and fragmentation (wake after sleep onset) over two consecutive nights from 22:00 p.m. to 06:00 a.m.. We identified differences in grip strength by history of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using independent-samples t tests. We examined associations between sleep duration and grip strength using exploratory multivariate regression analyses, after adjustment for clinically relevant covariates. RESULTS Grip strength among this cohort of older ICU survivors was almost 2 SDs below the norm for healthy older adults, indicating considerable ICU-acquired weakness. Grip strength was lower among subjects with history of OSA than those without OSA. Greater TST was associated with worse grip strength, after adjusting for history of OSA and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index global score. Moreover, among the subset of male subjects (n = 19), greater TST was significantly and negatively associated with grip strength, after adjusting for Acute Physiology, Age, and Chronic Health Evaluation III score, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index global score. DISCUSSION Sleep promotion may be a potentially modifiable risk factor to mitigate ICU-acquired weakness in older ICU survivors. We propose that improving sleep throughout recovery from critical illness may indirectly promote better outcomes, as poor grip strength is linked to longer length of hospital stay, higher acuity of discharge disposition, and worsened functional decline in older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disorders are commonly experienced by community caregivers for persons with cancer, with at least 72% reporting moderate to severe disorders. A consequence of this condition, which is associated with the presence of overload in the caregiver, is the increased risk of clinical depression. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of music on the sleep quality achieved by informal caregivers for cancer patients receiving home palliative care. In addition, we will assess the influence of specific variables that could modify these effects, analyse the correlates related to nocturnal wakefulness and consider the diurnal consequences according to the sleep characteristics identified. METHODS This single-blind, multicentre, randomised clinical trial will focus on informal providers of care for cancer patients. Two samples of 40 caregivers will be recruited. The first, intervention, group will receive seven music-based sessions. The control group will be masked with seven sessions of therapeutic education (reinforcing previous sessions). Outcomes will be evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, a triaxial accelerometer, EuroQol-5D-5L, the Caregiver Strain Index, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire. The caregivers' satisfaction with the intervention performed will also be examined. DISCUSSION This study is expected to extend our understanding of the efficacy of music therapy in enhancing the sleep quality of caregivers for patients receiving home palliative care. To our knowledge, no reliable scientific investigations of this subject have previously been undertaken. Music is believed to benefit certain aspects of sleep, but this has yet to be proven and, according to a Cochrane review, high-quality research in this field is necessary. One of the main strengths of our study, which heightens the quality of the randomised clinical trial design, is the objective assessment of physical activity by accelerometry and the use of both objective and subjective measures of sleep in caregivers. Music therapy for the caregivers addressed in this study is complementary, readily applicable, provokes no harmful side effects and may produce significant benefits. Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the relationship between sleep quality and duration and muscle strength among community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults. METHODS A systematic review was conducted from March 2020 until May 2020. Searches were done for peer-reviewed and English-written articles reporting results of studies in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and in article references lists. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses was used as well as the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) to appraise the methodological quality. RESULTS Twenty-one cross-sectional, three prospective studies and a total of 92,363 subjects were included. The majority of the included studies are classified as "high quality". Handgrip strength is the main method of muscle strength assessment. Sleep assessment is usually conducted using subjective measures, such as validated sleep scales or self-reported questionnaires. Actigraphy, as an objective measure, is used less often. Most studies support strong evidence on the association between weak muscle strength and poor sleep quality and duration among middle-aged and older adults; whereas the results for the gender-specific association and the impact of short or long sleep duration were inconclusive. CONCLUSION This review has identified strong evidence on the relationship between sleep quality and duration and muscle strength among middle-aged and older adults. Health professionals should consider this relationship as a component of geriatric assessment in community practice and geriatric settings. Future rigorous research with a combination of subjective and objective measurements is needed to explore whether gender and specific sleep duration are related to muscle strength.

Abstract
Objective The aims of this study were to investigate the association between osteosarcopenic obesity (OSO) and physical performance in Chinese elderly communities. Methods Our study population is comprised of residents of the Township Central Hospital in the suburban of Tianjin, China. Participants (n=303; percent body fat (PBF): ≥25% for men and ≥32% for women) were assessed using the direct segmental multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) for body composition. Sarcopenia was defined as the lower 20th percentile of appendicular skeletal muscle mass/height2 (ASMI). A quantitative ultrasound scan of each participants’ calcaneus with a T score≤−1.0 was used to identify the prevalence of osteopenia/osteoporosis (OP). We divided people into four groups: obesity only (O), osteopenic obesity (OO), sarcopenic obesity (SO), and osteosarcopenic obesity (OSO). We assessed the physical performance by grip strength, 4-m walk test (WS) and timed up and go test (TUGT). Results A total of 303 participants had completed data (89 men, 214 women; mean age of 68.8±6.0 years). The prevalence of OSO was 10.2% (men: 15.70%, women: 7.9%). After multiple adjustments, WS was significantly declined in OSO group when compared with the O group in men (mean value 95% CI was 0.84 (0.69, 0.99)) and women (mean value 95% CI was 0.93 (0.84, 1.02)). TUGT was significantly poorer in men (mean value 95% CI was 13.3 (10.6, 15.9)) and women (mean value 95% CI was 12.4 (11.2, 13.7)) with OSO when compared with the O group. Furthermore, the OSO group in women also had a significantly poorer TUGT compared with the OO group. The result of grip strength decreased significantly in women SO and OSO groups when compared with the O group (mean value 95% CI was 16.4 (14.5, 18.2) and 16.1 (13.9, 18.3)). But the results of grip strength in men showed no significant differences in any of the group. Conclusion In Chinese community-dwelling elderly, slower WS and lower balance function were associated with OSO in men and women. Lower grip strength was associated with SO and OSO in women.

Abstract
Gait, dynamic balance, and functional mobility problems are well-known fall risk factors. Furthermore, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and depression are prevalent among older women. This study aimed to analyze the associations of sleep quality, anxiety, and depression with functional mobility, gait speed, and dynamic balance in community-dwelling postmenopausal women aged ≥ 60 years. A total of 271 women (69.18 ± 5.69 years) participated in this study. Functional mobility (Timed Up-and-Go Test), dynamic balance (3-meter tandem walk test), gait speed (OptoGait® optical detection system), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) were assessed. Our results showed that poor sleep efficiency and the use of sleeping medication were related to decreased gait speed (R2 = 0.072). Poor functional mobility was linked to depression and the use of sleeping medication (R2 = 0.159). Additionally, increased symptoms of anxiety and depression were associated with worsened dynamic balance (R2 = 0.127). In conclusion, poorer sleep quality is associated with slower gait speed and reduced functional mobility, which is also related, along with impaired dynamic balance, to higher levels of anxiety and depression.

Abstract
Research on relationships between physical fitness and sleep duration among older adults is scarce, especially in Taiwanese representative samples of elderly people who undergo physical fitness measurements. This study aimed to determine the associations between physical fitness and short and long sleep durations among older adults in Taiwan. We conducted a cross-sectional study and reviewed data derived from the National Physical Fitness Survey in Taiwan. A total of 24,125 Taiwanese adults aged 65 years and older participated in this study between October 2014 and March 2015. Each individual's sleep duration was recorded with a standard questionnaire method. Sleep duration data were stratified into short (≤5 h), normal (6-7 h), and long (≥8 h) sleep duration groups. Physical fitness was assessed by five components: aerobic endurance (2 min step test), muscle strength and endurance (30 s arm curl and 30 s chair stand tests), flexibility (back scratch and chair sit-and-reach tests), body composition (body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)), and balance (one-leg stance with eye open and 8-foot up-and-go tests). To understand whether a dose-response relationship exists between physical fitness and short or long sleep duration, we analyzed four levels of performance on the basis of quartiles of physical fitness measurements by using logistic regression. The first quartile of physical fitness performance was the baseline level. The odds ratio (OR) for short sleep duration for the third quartile of BMI was 0.8031 times (95% CI, 0.7119-0.9061) lower than the baseline. For the fourth quartile of BMI, the OR was 0.8660 times (95% CI, 0.7653-0.9800) lower than the baseline. The adjusted OR for long sleep duration significantly decreased in the second, third, and fourth quartiles of the 30 s chair stand, back scratch, chair sit-and-reach test, one-leg stance with one eye open, and BMI. The adjusted OR was increased in the third and fourth quartiles of the 8-foot up-and-go and WHR. The results of the current study suggest that physical fitness performance may influence sleep duration as an associated factor, and the relationship is much stronger for long sleep duration than for short sleep duration.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies report that more than half of the people over the age of 65 years suffer from variable sleep problems. In this study, we conducted a cohort study to investigate the relationship between sleep duration, muscle mass, and function within a community-dwelling, elderly Chinese population. Our study population consisted of residents living in the township central hospital of suburban Tianjin, China. We measured muscle strength and walking speed. We divided sleep duration into the following four groups: <7 hours, 7-8 hours, >8-9 hours, and >9 hours. A total of 902 participants completed the 3-year follow-up. We observed a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and fall risk. Compared with the 7-8-hour group, fall risk within the <7-hour group was 3.67 (2.59, 5.42) times higher and fall risk within the >9-hour group was 2.35 (1.29, 3.52) times higher. After adjustment, muscle mass declined by -6.82% (-11.27%, -3.83%) in the <7-hour group. In summary, we observed a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and falls. Short sleep duration has a negative relationship with muscle mass decline in a community-dwelling, elderly Chinese population.

Abstract
The main purpose of the study was to explore the associations of sleep duration and sleep quality with physical activity (PA). In this cross-sectional study, participants were 894 elderly individuals (mean age 80 ± 3 years; 56.0% women) living in nursing homes. PA, sleep duration, and sleep quality (based on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)) were self-reported. The associations of sleep duration and sleep quality with PA at the nursing home level were analyzed using generalized estimating equations with clustering. Participants reporting short sleep duration (<6 h; OR = 0.45; 95% CI 0.25–0.80) were less likely to report sufficient PA, yet those reporting long sleep duration (>9 h; OR = 2.61; 95% CI 1.35–5.02) and good sleep quality (<5 points; OR = 1.59; 95% CI 1.19–2.12) were more likely to report sufficient PA. When sleep duration and sleep quality were entered into the same model, the same associations remained. This study shows that elderly individuals who report short sleep duration are less likely to meet PA guidelines, while those who report long sleep duration and good sleep quality are more likely to meet PA guidelines. Strategies aiming to improve sleep duration and sleep quality are warranted.

Abstract
This study examined relationships between self-perceived sleep quality and resilience among 116 dance students (Mean age = 21.6 years; SD = 4.348). who self-reported sleep quality with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and personal resilience with the Resilience Scale (RS). Most participants (59.5%) reported poor sleep quality on the PSQI, with 62.9% of the women and 42.1% of the men ( p = .092) scoring higher than five points on this instrument. On the RS, a large majority of the participants (75%) obtained scores less than 147, indicating low resilience, with no significant gender differences observed. Those reporting poor sleep quality (PSQI scores > 5) obtained lower resilience scores (RS < 147) than those reporting good sleep quality (PSQI scores ≤ 5; p = .025), and participants with poorer sleep quality were at higher risk of low resilience (Odds Ratio = 3.273) relative to those with good sleep quality ( p = .006). Those with shorter duration sleep (claiming they slept <7 hours/night) were also at higher risk for low resilience (Odds Ratio = 3.266), relative to those with longer duration sleep (>7 hours/night). These findings can help students and dance professionals improve their performance and face pressures inherent in dance practice. Follow-up research should verify these findings in varied populations with objective sleep measures and observational data from multiple respondents.
