Spectroscopic characterization of DOM and the nitrogen removal mechanism during wastewater reclamation plant

Chemodiversity transformation of organic matters in a full scale MBR-NF wastewater reclamation plant

Membrane bioreactor (MBR) and nanofiltration (NF) process has been attractive in wastewater reclamation, and was set as the target process in this study. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and trace organic contaminants (TrOCs), closely associated with water safety, are noteworthy pollutants. Though the general DOM characteristics and TrOCs removal in MBR-NF reclamation process have been reported in lab-/pilot-scale experiment, the molecular characteristics of DOM revealed by high resolution mass spectrometry, and the correlation between DOM and TrOCs have been rarely studied in full-scale MBR-NF wastewater reclamation plant. In this work, biological and NF processes contributed significantly to the removal of DOM and TrOCs, while MBR filtration contributed slightly. Spectroscopic analyses revealed that DOM with higher aromaticity and lower molecular weight were more recalcitrant along the treatment. Aromatic protein-like substances were preferentially removed comparing to humic-like substances. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry was applied to investigate DOM transformation at molecular level. DOM molecules with higher H/C and lower O/C, especially the aliphatics and peptides, were readily biodegraded into higher‑oxygenate, highly unsaturated, and aromatic compounds. The generated species mainly included condensed aromatics, polyphenols, and highly unsaturated compounds. Filtration in MBR tended to reject higher oxygenated molecules. NF effectively removed most of the DOM molecules, especially higher oxygenated molecules with low H, N and S. The residual TrOCs in the NF effluent, including sulfamethoxazole, ofloxacin, and bisphenol A, still displayed above medium environmental risk. Significant correlations were found among organic compounds, spectral indices, and peptides molecules. Positive correlation between most of the TrOCs and several DOM parameters implied that they were synchronously removed in biological and membrane filtration processes. SUVA and FI might be potential indexes in monitoring the performance of MBR-NF process in both DOM and TrOC removal. These findings would expand the understanding of DOM and TrOCs behavior in wastewater reclamation process and simplify an in-depth system monitoring.

Characterization and Analysis of Acetaldehyde Wastewater by Molecular Weight Distribution, Hydrophilicity, and Chemical Composition

Acetaldehyde is a typical toxic substance of the petrochemical industry. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) plays an important role in wastewater treatment. Therefore, the molecular weight, hydrophilicity, and chemical composition of DOC in acetaldehyde wastewater were evaluated. First, the molecular weight (MW) distribution was investigated; the results showed that acetaldehyde wastewater was mainly composed of components with a MW less than 1 kDa, and possessed higher proportion of protein-like substances that were dominant contributors to membrane fouling. Then, the distribution of hydrophobicity was evaluated; hydrophobic bases were reported to be slowly biodegradable fractions due to the high humic content. Finally, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was utilized to determine chemical composition, and 30 pollutants were detected. Aldehydes, hydrocarbons, ketones, alcohols, furans, phenols, and organic acids were the dominant pollutants. Most of them were moderately toxic compounds. The comprehensive characterization of acetaldehyde wastewater will contribute to control strategies and sustainable development.

Designing Multi-Stage 2 A/O-MBR Processes for a Higher Removal Rate of Pollution in Wastewater

Multi-stage A/O-MBR processes were designed to improve wastewater treatment efficiency; three different designs were carried out and compared in this study. The 2(A/O)-MBR process, i.e., with two sets of anoxic/oxic tanks in series, showed better effluent quality than A/O-MBR and 3(A/O)-MBR processes. The removal rates of COD, NH4+-N, TP and TN were 95.29%, 89.47%, 83.55% and 78.58%, respectively, complying satisfactorily with China’s urban sewage treatment plant pollutant discharge standards. In terms of membrane fouling, the 3(A/O)-MBR process demonstrated the lowest fouling propensity. The microbial community structure in each bioreaction tank was analyzed, the results from which matched with the process efficiency and fouling behavior.

Separation and characterization of refractory colored dissolved effluent organic matter in a full-scale industrial park wastewater treatment plant

Colored dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a significant indicator of refractory DOM in wastewaters, and fluorescent DOM is an essential part indicating colorants. However, little is known about the composition and contribution of colored DOM to wastewater. This study provided some insights on the persistent yellowish color in biological effluent through use of a multi-characterization approach, and evaluated the effect of two advanced treatments (O₃ and granular active carbon (GAC)) in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant. The multi-characterization technique incorporated resin fractionation, excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy (EEM) combined with fluorescence regional integration (FRI), size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The fractionation results showed that hydrophobic acid (HPOA) and hydrophilic (HPI) substances are abundant in colorants, and HPI-type colorants are comparatively resistant or unable to be removed through GAC and O₃ individually. FRI-based EEMs showed that F₃ (fulvic acid-like organics) and F₅ (humic acid-like organics) mainly account for the yellowish color, and their combined fractions of total colorants are 50%, 31%, and 48% in biological, biological + O₃, and biological + GAC effluents, respectively. SEC for measurement of the apparent molecular weight revealed that these colorants may have molecular weights in the range 2-5 kDa. The XPS analysis indicated that these colorants possess ether or hydroxyl and nitro (C-O/C-N) chromophoric groups with conjugated aromatic structures. For C-O/C-N, O₃ showed good removal efficiency overall. GAC showed exceptionally high efficiency for HPOA but very low efficacy toward HPI-type colorants in terms of C-O/C-N chromophoric functional group removal.

Characterization of dissolved organic matter in reclaimed wastewater supplying urban rivers with a special focus on dissolved organic nitrogen: A seasonal study

This study investigated the seasonal characterization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in reclaimed wastewater (RW) with a special focus on dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) from two full-scale municipal wastewater reclamation plants (WRPs) where the produced RW was used to augment urban rivers. Results showed that the concentrations of DON in RW ranged from 0.32 mg/L to 1.21 mg/L. A higher seasonal mean value of DON in RW from both of the WRPs was observed in winter (p < 0.05, ANOVA). DON chemical characteristics analysis, including ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry and ultrafiltration fractionation, showed that DON in RW exhibits more lability during winter than during the other three seasons. This finding was also supported by the results of an algal bioassay experiment, in which DON bioavailabilities were 63.7 ± 3.0%, 53.0 ± 5.3%, 49.5 ± 0.5%, and 49.8 ± 0.2% for WRP-A and were 60.8 ± 2.4%, 43.7 ± 2.2%, 41.2 ± 1.7%, and 43.1 ± 1.1% for WRP-B in winter, spring, summer, and autumn, respectively. Accordingly, DON in RW during winter is more prone to stimulate natural algae and microorganisms, which gives rise to eutrophication in urban rivers. At the molecular level, the seasonal changes in DON are not coupled with those of DOC, which highlights the necessity of DON measurement to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the seasonal characteristics of DOM in RW and its effect on wastewater reuse in urban rivers.

Monitoring NDMA precursors throughout membrane-based advanced wastewater treatment processes by organic matter fluorescence

This study investigates the potential of fluorescence excitation/emission matrices (EEM) measurement as a tool to predict N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation in water reuse applications. In particular, samples from a pilot-scale membrane biological reactor (MBR) followed by nanofiltration (NF) advanced water treatment plant, are used for the study. Concentrations of both, specific NDMA precursors and NDMA formation potential (FP) are correlated with different EEM peaks. The specific precursors investigated are: erythromycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, venlafaxine, o-desmethylvenlafaxine, ranitidine and citalopram, while the NDMA FP is conventionally measured by the NDMA formation potential test. EEM peaks investigated are obtained by fluorescence regional integration as well as by the peak picking method generating I₁, I₂, I₃, I₄, and I₅ peaks. Results showed that protein-like materials are correlated with the bulk NDMA FP and specific NDMA precursors. Additionally, selected fluorescence peaks such as I₁, I₂ and I₄ are strongly correlated with NDMA precursors throughout the MBR-NF pilot plant. The removal of NDMA precursors and EEM peaks also correlated well (R² > 0.8). This data shows that fluorescence EEM can be a promising tool to monitor the concentration of NDMA precursors and their removal in water reuse application.

Characterization of dissolved organic matter in wastewater during aerobic, anaerobic, and anoxic treatment processes by molecular size and fluorescence analyses

Changes in the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM: the dissolved fraction of natural organic matter) during a series of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) processes were investigated by using a combination of molecular size analysis and excitation emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis. The characteristics of DOM were compared following aerobic, anoxic, and anaerobic treatments. Three peaks at about 100,000 Da (high-molecular-size DOM, Peak 1) and about 900-1,100 Da (intermediate-molecular-size DOM, Peak 2; low-molecular-size DOM, Peak 3 as the shoulder of Peak 2) were observed in the distribution of total organic carbon molecular sizes in the influent of the WWTPs. In this study, five fluorescent components (C1 to C5) were identified in the EEM spectra. Molecular size analysis and molecular size fractionation revealed that the C3 (humic-like) and C5 (specific to sewage) fluorophores had intermediate or low molecular sizes. Comparison of the changes of the concentrations of dissolved organic carbon in each reaction tank and investigation of the removal selectivity of each treatment (aerobic, anaerobic, and anoxic) suggested that the heterogenous compounds present in DOM of the influent were homogenized into intermediate-molecular-size DOM with high hydrophobicity and aromaticity, or into C4 fluorophores (DOM-X), during anaerobic or anoxic treatment. DOM-X was able to be transformed or removed by aerobic treatment. The results suggested that introduction of aerobic treatment at the appropriate stage of wastewater treatment or inclusion of physical or chemical treatment should be an effective way to optimize DOM removal.
