Influence of humic acid and dihydroxy benzoic acid on the agglomeration, adsorption, sedimentation and dissolution of copper, manganese, aluminum and silica nanoparticles - A tentative exposure scenario

Effect of interaction between dissolved organic matter and iron/manganese (hydrogen) oxides on the degradation of organic pollutants by in-situ advanced oxidation techniques

Iron and manganese (hydrogen) oxides (IMHOs) exhibit excellent redox capabilities for environmental pollutants and are commonly used in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) technologies for the degradation of organic pollutants. However, the coexisting dissolved organic matter (DOMs) in surface environments would influence the degradation behavior and fate of organic pollutants in IMHOs-based ISCO. This review has summarized the interactions and mechanisms between DOMs and IMHOs, as well as the properties of DOM-IMHOs complexes. Importantly, the promotion or inhibition impact of DOM was discussed from three perspectives. First, the presence of DOMs may hinder the accessibility of active sites on IMHOs, thus reducing their efficiency in degrading organic pollutants. The formation of compounds between DOMs and IMHOs alters their stability and activity in the degradation process. Second, the presence of DOMs may also affect the generation and transport of active species, thereby influencing the oxidative degradation process of organic pollutants. Third, specific components within DOMs also participate and affect the degradation pathways and rates. A comprehensive understanding of the interaction between DOMs and IMHOs helps to better understand and predict the degradation process of organic pollutants mediated by IMHOs in real environmental conditions and contributes to the further development and application of IMHO-mediated ISCO technology.

Combined toxicity of fluorescent silica nanoparticles with cadmium in Ceriodaphnia dubia: Interactive effects of natural organic matter and green algae feeding

The environmental risks of silica nanoparticles (SiNP) reported in the literature are contradictory and bring into question its safety for use in consumer applications. Organisms are never exposed to NPs alone in the real environment, while studies of the combined toxicity of SiNP are limited. To address this, we compared the acute toxicity of fluorescent core-shell SiNPs alone and in mixtures with Cd2+ to Ceriodaphnia dubia in the absence and presence of NOM. We identified biodistribution and feeding behaviour in addition to the traditional endpoints. NOM increased the colloidal stability of SiNPs in reconstituted water. In immobility tests, no significant effects were observed from Cd2+ exposure with NOM and varying concentrations of SiNPs. A similar pattern of curve dose-response was observed for varying concentrations of SiNPs and increasing Cd2+ concentration and constant NOM. Fluorescence microscopy verified a dose-dependent bioaccumulation of SiNPs in C. dubia. Co-exposure to 10 mg L-1 SiNP with NOM and Cd2+ resulted in a stimulated stress feeding response at the lower Cd2+ concentrations which declined at the higher dose due to a functional impairment of the digestive tract. Alterations in feeding behaviour and the increasing bioaccumulation of SiNP indicate a potential ecological risk for Ceriodaphnia dubia from the mixture exposure.

Catalytic dechlorination of 1,2-DCA in nano Cu0-borohydride system: effects of Cu0/Cun+ ratio, surface poisoning, and regeneration of Cu0 sites

Aqueous-phase catalyzed reduction of organic contaminants via zerovalent copper nanoparticles (nCu⁰), coupled with borohydride (hydrogen donor), has shown promising results. So far, the research on nCu⁰ as a remedial treatment has focused mainly on contaminant removal efficiencies and degradation mechanisms. Our study has examined the effects of Cu⁰/Cuⁿ⁺ ratio, surface poisoning (presence of chloride, sulfides, humic acid (HA)), and regeneration of Cu⁰ sites on catalytic dechlorination of aqueous-phase 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) via nCu⁰-borohydride. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the nano size and quasi-spherical shape of nCu⁰ particles. X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of Cu⁰ and Cu₂O and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy also provided the Cu⁰/Cuⁿ⁺ ratios. Reactivity experiments showed that nCu⁰ was incapable of utilizing H₂ from borohydride left over during nCu⁰ synthesis and, hence, additional borohydride was essential for 1,2-DCA dechlorination. Washing the nCu⁰ particles improved their Cu⁰/Cuⁿ⁺ ratio (1.27) and 92% 1,2-DCA was removed in 7 h with k_obs = 0.345 h^-1 as compared to only 44% by unwashed nCu⁰ (0.158 h^-1) with Cu⁰/Cuⁿ⁺ ratio of 0.59, in the presence of borohydride. The presence of chloride (1000-2000 mg L^-1), sulfides (0.4-4 mg L^-1), and HA (10-30 mg L^-1) suppressed 1,2-DCA dechlorination; which was improved by additional borohydride probably via regeneration of Cu⁰ sites. Coating the particles decreased their catalytic dechlorination efficiency. 85-90% of the removed 1,2-DCA was recovered as chloride. Chloroethane and ethane were main dechlorination products indicating hydrogenolysis as the major pathway. Our results imply that synthesis parameters and groundwater solutes control nCu⁰ catalytic activity by altering its physico-chemical properties. Thus, these factors should be considered to develop an efficient remedial design for practical applications of nCu⁰-borohydride.

The effect of natural biomolecules on yttrium oxide nanoparticles from a Daphnia magna survival rate perspective

The attention to rare earth oxide nanoparticles (NPs), including yttrium oxide (Y₂O₃), has increased in many fields due to their unique structural characteristics and functional properties. The aim of our study was to investigate the mechanisms by which bio-corona formation on Y₂O₃ NPs affects their environmental fate and toxicity. The Y₂O₃ NPs induced toxicity to freshwater filter feeder Daphnia magna at particle concentrations of 1 and 10 mg/L, regardless of particle size. Interactions between naturally excreted biomolecules (e.g. protein, lipids, and polysaccharides) derived from D. magna, and the Y₂O₃ NPs (30-45 nm) resulted in the formation of an eco-corona, which reduced their toxic effects toward D. magna at a particle concentration of 10 mg/L. No effects were observed at lower concentrations or for the other particle sizes investigated. Copper-zinc (Cu-Zn) superoxide dismutase, apolipophorins, and vitellogenin-1 proteins proved to be the most prominent proteins of the adsorbed corona, and possibly a reason for the reduced toxicity of the 30-45 nm Y₂O₃ NPs toward D. magna.

Effects of interactions between natural organic matter and aquatic organism degradation products on the transformation and dissolution of cobalt and nickel-based nanoparticles in synthetic freshwater

Expanding applications and production of engineered nanoparticles lead to an increased risk for their environmental dispersion. Systematic knowledge of surface transformation and dissolution of nanoparticles is essential for risk assessment and regulation establishment. Such aspects of Co- and Ni-based nanoparticles including metals, oxides, and solution combustion synthesized metal nanoparticles (metal cores with carbon shells) were investigated upon environmental interaction with organic matter, simulated by natural organic matter (NOM) and degradation products from zooplankton and algae (eco-corona biomolecules, EC) in freshwater (FW). The presence of NOM and EC in FW results in negative surface charges of the nanoparticles reduces the extent of nanoparticles agglomeration, and increases concentration, mainly due to the surface adsorption of carboxylate groups of the organic matter. The dissolution of the Co-based nanoparticles was for all conditions (FW, FW with NOM or EC) higher than the Ni-based, except for Co₃O₄ being nearly non-soluble. The surface transformation and dissolution of nanoparticles are highly exposure and time-dependent, and surface- and environment specific. Therefore, no general correlation was observed between dissolution and, particle types, surface conditions, or EC/NOM adsorption. This underlines the importance of thorough investigations of nanoparticles adsorption/desorption, degradation, and exposure scenarios for developing regulatory relevant protocols and guidelines.

Density functional theory based computational investigations on the stability of highly active trimetallic PtPdCu nanoalloys for electrochemical oxygen reduction

Activity, cost, and durability are the trinity of catalysis research for the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). While studies towards increasing activity and reducing cost of ORR catalysts have been carried out extensively, much effort is needed in durability investigation of highly active ORR catalysts. In this work, we examined the stability of a trimetallic PtPdCu catalyst that has demonstrated high activity and incredible durability during ORR using density functional theory (DFT) based computations. Specifically, we studied the processes of dissolution/deposition and diffusion between the surface and inner layer of Cu species of Pt₂₀Pd₂₀Cu₆₀ catalysts at electrode potentials up to 1.2 V to understand their role towards stabilizing Pt₂₀Pd₂₀Cu₆₀ catalysts. The results show there is a dynamic Cu surface composition range that is dictated by the interplay of the four processes, dissolution, deposition, diffusion from the surface to inner layer, and diffusion from the inner layer to the surface of Cu species, in the stability and observed oscillation of lattice constants of Cu-rich PtPdCu nanoalloys.

Influence of natural organic matter on the transformation of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles and their ecotoxic potency in vitro

Increased use and production of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) lead to an elevated risk of their diffuse dispersion into the aquatic environment and increased concern on unknown effects induced by their release into the aquatic ecosystem. An improved understanding of the environmental transformation processes of NPs of various surface characteristics is hence imperative for risk assessment and management. This study presents results on effects of natural organic matter (NOM) on the environmental transformation and dissolution of metal and metal oxide NPs of different surface and solubility properties in synthetic freshwater (FW) with and without NOM. Adsorption of NOM was evident on most of the studied NPs, except Sb and Sb₂O₃, which resulted in the formation of negatively charged colloids of higher stability and smaller size distribution compared with the same NPs in FW only. The dissolution rate of the NPs in the presence of NOM correlated with the strength of interactions between the carboxylate group of NOM and the particle surface, and resulted in either no (Mn, Sb, ZnO NPs), increased (Co, Sn NPs) and decreased (Ni, NiO, Sb₂O₃, Y₂O₃ NPs) levels of dissolution. One type of metal NP from each group (Mn, Ni, Sn) were investigated to assess whether observed differences in adsorption of NOM and dissolution would influence their ecotoxic potency. The results showed Mn, Ni, and Sn NPs to generate intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a time and dose-dependent manner. The extent of ROS generation in FW was similar for both Mn and Ni NPs but higher for Sn NPs. These findings are possibly related to interactions and infiltration of the NPs with the cells, which lead to redox imbalances which could induce oxidative stress and cell damage. At the same time, the presence of NOM generally reduced the intracellular ROS generation by 20-40% for the investigated NPs and also reduced cytotoxicity of Sn NPs, which can be attributed to the stronger interaction of carboxylate groups of NOM with the surface of the NPs.

MNPs may undergo different environmental transformations in aquatic systems, consequently changing their mobility, bioavailability and toxicity to freshwater invertebrates.

Ion compositions in artificial media control the impact of humic acid on colloidal behaviour, dissolution and speciation of CuO-NP

The toxicity of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NP) strongly depends on their interactions with the surrounding environment, impacting their dissolution and colloidal stability. This behaviour is studied quite extensively for simplified electrolytes, but information on the behaviour of CuO-NP in more complex artificial media are lacking. In our study, we analysed the colloidal behaviour and considered the speciation of CuO-NP in pure water and three artificial media of different complexity which are used in ecotoxicology. Measurements were done over 7 days in the absence and presence of humic acid (HA) as a model organic molecule. In pure water, the addition of HA lowered the zeta potential from +11 to -41 mV, while in all artificial media, it stayed constantly at about -20 mV. The hydrodynamic diameter of CuO-NP remained unaffected by HA in pure water and seawater, while in porewater and especially in freshwater, HA suppressed strong agglomeration. In pure water, HA strongly increased dissolution to the highest observed value (3% of total Cu), while HA reduced dissolution in all artificial media. Speciation calculations revealed that cations from the media competed with Cu from the NP surface for complexing sites of the HA. This competition may have caused the reduced dissolution in the presence of ions. Furthermore, speciation calculations also suggest that ion composition drove agglomeration behaviour rather than ion concentration: agglomeration was high when divalent cations where the major interaction partner and dominant in relative terms. HA may have reduced the relative dominance and thus altered the agglomeration, aligning it in all media. Summarizing, ion composition and the presence of HA strongly drive the dissolution and agglomeration of CuO-NP in artificial media, consequently, analysing complexation can help to predict environmental behaviour and toxicity.

Adsorption of bio-organic eco-corona molecules reduces the toxic response to metallic nanoparticles in Daphnia magna

As the use of engineered nanomaterials increases, so does the risk of them spreading to natural ecosystems. Hitherto, knowledge regarding the toxic properties of nanoparticles (NP’s) and their potential interactions with natural bio-organic molecules adsorbed to them, and thereby forming surface coronas, is limited. However, we show here that the toxic effect of NPs of tungsten carbide cobalt (WC–Co) and cobalt (Co) on the crustacean Daphnia magna is postponed in the presence of natural biological degradation products (eco-corona biomolecules). For Daphnia exposed to WC–Co NPs the survival time increased with 20–25% and for Co NPs with 30–47% after mixing the particles with a solution of eco-corona biomolecules before exposure. This suggests that an eco-corona, composed of biomolecules always present in natural ecosystems, reduces the toxic potency of both studied NPs. Further, the eco-coronas did not affect the particle uptake, suggesting that the reduction in toxicity was related to the particle-organism interaction after eco-corona formation. In a broader context, this implies that although the increasing use and production of NPs may constitute a novel, global environmental threat, the acute toxicity and long-term effects of some NPs will, at least under certain conditions, be reduced as they enter natural ecosystems.

Corrosion and transformation of solution combustion synthesized Co, Ni and CoNi nanoparticles in synthetic freshwater with and without natural organic matter

Pure metallic Co, Ni, and their bimetallic compositions of Co3Ni, CoNi, and CoNi3 nanomaterials were prepared by solution combustion synthesis. Microstructure, phase composition, and crystalline structure of these nanoparticles (NPs) were characterized along with studies of their corrosion and dissolution properties in synthetic freshwater with and without natural organic matter (NOM). The nanomaterials consisted of aggregates of fine NPs (3-30 nm) of almost pure metallic and bimetallic crystal phases with a thin surface oxide covered by a thin carbon shell. The nanomaterials were characterized by BET surface areas ranging from ~ 1 to 8 m2/g for the Ni and Co NPs, to 22.93 m2/g, 14.86 m2/g, and 10.53 m2/g for the Co3Ni, CoNi, CoNi3 NPs, respectively. More Co and Ni were released from the bimetallic NPs compared with the pure metals although their corrosion current densities were lower. In contrast to findings for the pure metal NPs, the presence of NOM increased the release of Co and Ni from the bimetallic NPs in freshwater compared to freshwater only even though its presence reduced the corrosion rate (current density). It was shown that the properties of the bimetallic nanomaterials were influenced by multiple factors such as their composition, including carbon shell, type of surface oxides, and the entropy of mixing.

Joint effect of nanoplastics and humic acid on the uptake of PAHs for Daphnia magna: A model study

Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging pollutants which can adsorb large amounts of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) and be ingested by aquatic organisms. NPs interact with dissolved organic matter (DOM) and result in significant impacts on the bioaccumulation of HOCs in the actual environment. For the first time, the joint effects of two complex matrices on the bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to Daphnia magna (D. magna) were studied by modeling calculation. The complex matrices, nano-sized polystyrene (PS) and/or humic acid (HA), were under environmentally realistic concentrations. A biodynamic model was modified and the uptake fluxes from all exposure pathways were quantified using the experimental data. A flux estimation showed that the bioaccumulation amounts at equilibrium were mostly dependent on dermal uptake (≥99.3 % of the total). The PS matrix would retard the intestinal uptake process in D. magna, especially for the less hydrophobic PAHs; while the HA or the HA-PS matrix would facilitate the mass transfer of PAHs from the matrix to lipids in the gut. Moreover, the biota matrix accumulation factor (BMAF) were calculated to verify the biodynamic model. This work is helpful to clarify the bioaccumulation effects of PAHs in complex environmental systems.

Decomplexation of Cu(II)-natural organic matter complex by non-thermal plasma oxidation: Process and mechanisms

Heavy metals and natural organic matters (NOM) form very stable heavy metal-NOM complexes in aqueous, facilitating the migration of heavy metals and enhancing their potential risks. In this study, non-thermal plasma oxidation was attempted to destroy the heavy metal-NOM complexes, with Cu-humate (Cu-HA) as a model. The decomplexation efficiency reached 86.1 % within 50 min of plasma oxidation at 16 kV. The generated reactive species by the non-thermal plasma, including O₂^-, ¹O₂, OH, attacked the carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups of HA, leading to cleavage of the Cu-O bonds, decomplexation of Cu-HA, and release of free Cu(II). Meanwhile, a variety of small molecular intermediates, including phenols, benzoic acids, esters, amines, ketones, acetic acid, formic acid, and oxalic acid, were generated due to attack by the oxidative species on the aromatic moiety and double bonds in Cu-HA. As a consequence of decomplexation, the residual toxicity of Cu-HA to Scenedesmus obliquus was distinctly reduced. This study provides a potential technique to decomplex heavy metal-NOM complexes, and reduces their toxicity to typical Scenedesmus obliquus.

Montmorillonite clay and humic acid modulate the behavior of copper oxide nanoparticles in aqueous environment and induces developmental defects in zebrafish embryo

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) is one of the most commonly used metal oxide nanoparticles for commercial and industrial products. An increase in the manufacturing and use of the CuO NPs based products has increased the likelihood of their release into the aquatic environment. This has attracted major attention among researchers to explore their impact in human as well as environmental systems. CuO NPs, once released into the environment interact with the biotic and abiotic constituents of the ecosystem. Hence the objective of the study was to provide a holistic understanding of the effect of abiotic factors on the stability and aggregation of CuO NPs and its correlation with their effect on the development of zebrafish embryo. It has been observed that the bioavailability of CuO NPs decrease in presence of humic acid (HA) and heteroagglomeration of CuO NPs occurs with clay minerals. CuO NPs, CuO NPs + HA and CuO NPs + Clay significantly altered the expression of genes involved in development of dorsoventral axis and neural network of zebrafish embryos. However, the presence of HA with clay showed protective effect on zebrafish embryo development. These findings provide new insights into the interaction of NPs with abiotic factors and combined effects of such complexes on developing zebrafish embryos genetic markers.

Exploring the mechanisms of graphene oxide behavioral and morphological changes in zebrafish

The presence of natural organic matter such as humic acid (HA) can influence the behavior of graphene oxide (GO) in the aquatic environment. In this study, zebrafish embryos were analyzed after 5 and 7 days of exposure to GO (100 mg L^-1) and HA (20 mg L^-1) alone or together. The results indicated that, regardless of the presence of HA, larvae exposed to GO for 5 days showed an increase in locomotor activity, reduction in the yolk sac size, and total length and inhibition of AChE activity, but there was no difference in enzyme expression. The statistical analysis indicated that the reductions in total larval length, yolk sac size, and AChE activity in larvae exposed to GO persisted in relation to the control group, but there was a recovery of these parameters in groups also exposed to HA. Larvae exposed to GO for 7 days did not show significant differences in locomotor activity, but the RT-PCR gene expression analysis evidenced an increase in the AChE expression. Since the embryos exposed to GO showed a reduction in overall length, they were submitted to confocal microscopy and their muscle tissue configuration investigated. No changes were observed in the muscle tissue. The results indicated that HA is associated with the toxicity risk modulation by GO and that some compensatory homeostasis mechanisms may be involved in the developmental effects observed in zebrafish.

In the Search for Nanospecific Effects of Dissolution of Metallic Nanoparticles at Freshwater-Like Conditions: A Critical Review

Knowledge on relations between particle properties and dissolution/transformation characteristics of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) in freshwater is important for risk assessment and product development. This critical review aims to elucidate nanospecific effects on dissolution of metallic NPs in freshwater and similar media. Dissolution rate constants are compiled and analyzed for NPs of silver (Ag), copper (Cu), copper oxide/hydroxide (CuO, Cu(OH)₂), zinc oxide (ZnO), manganese (Mn), and aluminum (Al), showing largely varying (orders of magnitude) constants when modeled using first order kinetics. An effect of small primary sizes (<15 nm) was observed, leading to increased dissolution rate constants and solubility in some cases. However, the often extensive particle agglomeration can result in reduced nanospecific effects on dissolution and also an increased uncertainty related to the surface area, a parameter that largely influence the extent of dissolution. Promising ways to model surface areas of NPs in solution using fractal dimensions and size distributions are discussed in addition to nanospecific aspects related to other processes such as corrosion, adsorption of natural organic matter (NOM), presence of capping agents, and existence of surface defects. The importance of the experimental design on the results of dissolution experiments of metal and metal oxide NPs is moreover highlighted, including the influence of ionic metal solubility and choice of particle dispersion methodology.
