Socioecological factors influencing physical activity engagement for women across the menopausal transition: a systematic review

IMPORTANCE

Physical activity during menopause can be effective in reducing the physiological changes associated with reproductive aging that increase risks for noncommunicable diseases, yet many women do not meet the recommendations for physical activity.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to synthesize factors influencing physical activity for women across menopausal transition phases using a socioecological approach.

EVIDENCE REVIEW

The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis was used to systematically search 10 databases between 2001 and 2021. A comprehensive search strategy was used to identify studies on physical activity of women in various stages of menopause. A socioecological model was used to categorize the reported barriers and enablers.

FINDINGS

Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings highlight several intrapersonal barriers such as existing health complaints versus enablers such as awareness of the health benefits of physical activity during menopause. Ensuring women's safety, preventing injury, and enhancing exercise self-efficacy were important components of programs. Social support was also an important enabler of women's engagement in activities.

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE

Several barriers and enablers were identified and can inform practitioners and future interventions to encourage physical activity among women in various stages of menopause. For instance, when encouraging physical activity during menopause, practitioners should consider other health complaints, safety, and injury prevention while discussing the benefits of physical activity related to managing menopausal symptoms. There was a lack of theoretically informed studies exploring the barriers and enablers to physical activity for women in various stages of menopause; thus, research designs may not have fully accounted for influences. Future research that combines socioecological and individual theories of behavior is needed to comprehensively understand the complexity of physical activity among women across the menopausal transition.

Obesity and Severity of Menopausal Symptoms: a Contemporary Review

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Vasomotor symptoms are frequently experienced by women during menopause and have been linked to obesity. Severity of menopausal symptoms is a distinct construct from presence of symptoms, and the relation between severity of symptoms and obesity is less established. The purpose of this brief narrative review was to summarize evidence from recent studies on associations between menopausal symptom severity and measures of obesity.

RECENT FINDINGS

Sixteen articles were identified that specifically assessed and reported on the severity of menopausal symptoms in relation to measures of obesity including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio. Most studies to date show that greater BMI, waist size, and waist-to-hip ratio are associated with greater severity of menopausal symptoms. Given the large segment of women who will experience symptoms and that severity of symptoms influences treatment decisions, future studies are needed to determine how weight management efforts may reduce the severity of menopausal symptoms.

Sexual experiences of postmenopausal women in China: a qualitative study

Background

Sexual dysfunction is common among postmenopausal women and can have a significant negative impact on quality of life.

Aim

This study aimed to explore perceptions, experiences, and coping strategies related to sex among postmenopausal women in China.

Methods

We used phenomenologic qualitative methods in this study. On the basis of purposive sampling and the data saturation principle, 21 volunteers from a community cohort study were selected for semistructured interviews. The data were analyzed and themes were extracted.

Outcomes

Thematic codes pertaining to sexual experiences and coping strategies were defined and assessed in this study.

Results

Four themes and 12 subthemes were extracted from the interview data. The sexual concepts were relatively conservative for most of the Chinese women; the majority experienced physical and psychological distress with respect to sex, although negative and positive psychological experiences were described. The women often passively accepted and adapted to negative changes to their sex lives during the postmenopause period.

Clinical Implications

This study highlights the importance of and need for effective dissemination of sexual health-related knowledge and the opening of appropriate communication channels.

Strengths and Limitations

By using a qualitative approach, this study provides individuals with the opportunity to describe their cognition and attitudes toward sexuality. Limitations include limited generalizability, as is true for most qualitative research. Additionally, the study is based solely on the female perspective and cannot fully reflect the sex life of couples.

Conclusion

The sexual experiences of our respondents exhibited distinct Chinese cultural characteristics. The interviews show the importance of paying attention to postmenopausal women's sexual health and providing relevant professional support and guidance to improve women's overall health-related quality of life.

Physical activity, anthropometric measurements, quality of life and menopausal symptoms among South-Indian women

Introduction

Menopause is the period when the reproductive capacity ceases in women's life. A wide range of symptoms occur as a consequence of estrogen decrease during menopause. Evidence suggests that physically active women have a better quality of life (QoL) and fewer menopausal symptoms. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between physical activity (PA), anthropometric measurements, QoL and menopausal symptoms.

Material and method

A cross-sectional study was conducted online through WhatsApp and Facebook and via email among menopausal women (April 2021 - June 2021). In total 168 responses were received; 153 responses were included in the study based on the inclusion criteria. Participants were asked to complete the details of anthropometric measurements, the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MENQOL).

Results

The majority of menopausal women complained of one or more symptoms in the MRS. A statistically significant difference was noted between the body mass index (BMI) and the menopausal symptoms such as irritability and depressive mood. There was an association between PA and MENQOL physical and sexual domains (p-value ≤ 0.05).

Conclusions

There was an association between PA, menopausal symptoms, BMI and MENQOL physical and sexual domains. Hence, moderate PA promotion is recommended among middle aged women to have a healthy menopausal transition.

The impact of physical activity and group discussion on happiness in postmenopausal women: A randomized trial

Menopause is a physiological phenomenon, which in some cases may lead to physical and psychological complications. These complications degrade happiness and quality of life. The authors conducted the current study to determine the impact of physical activity (PA) and group discussion (GD) on happiness in postmenopausal women. For this clinical trial with a factorial design, 160 eligible menopausal women in the 45-55 age range were randomly assigned to four groups of PA, GD and GD+PA), and control group. The four groups completed the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire. The happiness score in the PA, GD and GD+PA groups was significantly higher immediately and two months after the intervention than that of the control group. PA and GD can increase happiness in postmenopausal women who reside in Kermanshah-Iran. Using PA and GD in postmenopausal women care programs is recommended.

Examining the Health-Related Needs of Females during Menopause: A Systematic Review Study

Menopause is one the most crucial stages in a female's life. Identifying the education gaps regarding menopause is important, thus this study aims to explain the health-related needs of females during menopause. Scopus, PubMed, Scientific Information Database, and Web of Science databases were searched for the available observational (cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional), systematic review, meta-analysis, and clinical trial studies (2007-2021) using keywords, such as 'Educational Needs Assessment,' 'Assessment of Healthcare Needs,' 'menopause,' 'climacteric,' 'premenopause,' and 'postmenopause.' A total of 180 out of 5,705 papers were evaluated after considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The educational needs of females during menopause in the reviewed studies include osteoporosis, oral and dental problems, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, lung diseases, infectious diseases, musculoskeletal problems, urinary problems, breast cancer, defecation problems, genital disorders, special diseases such as eye diseases and hypothyroidism and hormone therapy, mental disorders, cognitive function, sleep disorders, sexual disorders, physical activity, supplement consumption, public health issues, health education, fall, and nutrition. The study results reveal that females during postmenopause require training, counseling, and support in all aspects to get through this challenging time, and providing these services, infrastructure, appropriate policy, and the use and support of the medical team's capacity are all required.

Psychometric properties of a Persian version of the Vulvovaginal Symptoms Questionnaire for measuring vulvovaginal symptoms in postmenopausal women

OBJECTIVE

Vulvovaginal symptoms are common in postmenopausal women and can affect their quality of life and sexual function. Using a sample of postmenopausal Iranian women, we evaluated a Persian translation of the Vulvovaginal Symptoms Questionnaire (VSQ).

METHODS

This study included 201 postmenopausal Iranian women referred to dermatology and gynecology clinics affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran. We translated the VSQ to the Persian language using the forward-backward method. We examined the questionnaire's internal consistency using Cronbach α coefficient and evaluated its construct validity using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses.

RESULTS

A Cronbach α coefficient of 0.763 confirmed the overall internal consistency of the Persian VSQ. Exploratory factor analysis indicated that except for three items in the symptoms subscale, others had sufficient α coefficients, although some did not load on the expected subscales. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the appropriate allocation of all but two items to the expected subscales. An intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.89 confirmed the reliability of the questionnaire.

CONCLUSIONS

Although some parts of the Persian VSQ were unsatisfactory, most were appropriate for assessing vulvovaginal symptoms in postmenopausal Iranian women. We recommend further cultural adaptations.

Health-related quality of life among menopausal women: A cross-sectional study from Pokhara, Nepal

INTRODUCTION

Menopause is the permanent cessation of menstruation. Quality of life is a broad concept affected by an individual's physical health, psychological state, level of independence, societal relationship, and environmental features. During the menopausal period, women can experience various symptoms affecting their quality of life. This study assesses the factors associated with health-related quality of life among menopausal women.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A community-based cross-sectional study was carried out among 249 menopausal women to assess their health-related quality of life, associated factors, and self-reported health problems. A pre-tested structured interview schedule was used to conduct face-to-face interviews to obtain the information per the study's objective. The Menopausal Rating Scale (MRS) was used to assess the health-related quality of life. Data was entered in Epi-data, and analysis was done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were carried out to obtain results per our objectives.

RESULTS

The study found that 51.4% of menopausal women had poor quality of life. The mean and standard deviation of the total MRS score was found to be 9.5±5.3. Ultimately, the factors such as educational attainment {Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 5.779, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 2.029-16.459}, medication/treatment of the health problems (AOR = 4.828, 95% CI: 1.662-14.023), alcohol intake status (AOR = 8.006, 95% CI: 2.016-31.785) and physical activity (AOR = 5.746, 95% CI: 1.144-28.872) were significant determinants of quality of life among menopausal women.

CONCLUSION

There is a need to pay proper attention to factors affecting the quality of life to improve the status of menopausal women.

Association between Physical Activity, Body Composition, and Metabolic Disorders in Middle-Aged Women of Ksar el Kebir (Morocco)

This study aimed to examine the association between physical activity (PA), body composition, and metabolic disorders in a population of Moroccan women classified by menopausal status. This cross-sectional study comprised 373 peri- and postmenopausal women aged 45-64 years old. PA levels were assessed using the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SF). Body composition and metabolic disorders were assessed by measurements of anthropometric and biological parameters: weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), WC/HC ratio, percent body fat, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, and serum lipids (total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), HDL-C, and LDL-C). Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was diagnosed according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) criteria. Pearson correlations were used to test for associations. The mean total PA score of perimenopausal women was 1683.51 ± 805.36 MET-min/week, and of postmenopausal women was 1450.81 ± 780.67 MET-min/week. In all participants, peri- and postmenopausal women, PA was significantly and inversely associated with BMI, weight, percent body fat, HC, WC, and number of MetS components (p < 0.01), and with fasting blood glucose, TC, TG, and LDL-C (p < 0.05). The frequencies of metabolic disorders, obesity, abdominal obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and MetS were significantly lower at moderate and intense levels of PA (p < 0.05), in also all participants. In middle-aged women, particularly those who are peri-menopausal, PA at moderate and intense levels is associated with more favorable body composition and less frequent metabolic disorders. However, in this particular study, PA does not appear to be associated with blood pressure and HDL-C concentrations. Future studies may be needed to further clarify these findings.

Patterns of smoking and menopause-specific quality of life: smoking duration matters more

Evidence about the association of quantity of cigarettes smoked and duration of smoking with quality of life in menopause is sparse. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between smoking patterns and menopause-specific quality of life. This cross-sectional study included 513 consecutive midlife women at two primary health care centers in Belgrade, Serbia. Collection of data was carried out from February 2014 to January 2015, using three questionnaires: socio-epidemiologic questionnaire, Menopause-specific Quality of Life questionnaire (MENQOL) and Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI). Women reported their smoking status (smoker, former smoker, non-smoker), the length of time spent smoking and quantity of cigarettes smoked per day. There was no difference in proportions of ever smokers compared to never smokers. However, there were more women who were current nonsmokers than current smokers. A linear regression model, adjusted for residency district, relationship status, educational level, employment, drinking alcohol, having exercise, age and BDI, showed that longer duration of smoking, but not number of cigarettes smoked per day, was associated with worse Physical domain and total MENQOL score. Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis showed that menopausal symptoms as measured by total MENQOL score were significantly less bothersome for women who smoked less than 10 years and significantly more intense in women who smoked 21 to 30 years. Midlife women should be encouraged to quit smoking as soon as possible, preferably before menopause. Strategies to prevent and quit smoking should be prioritized at all levels of health care delivery for women.Supplemental data for this article is available online at.

Longitudinal associations between sleep quality and menopausal symptoms among community-dwelling climacteric women: A multi-centered study

STUDY OBJECTIVES

Menopausal symptoms exist in most climacteric women, which can harm the quality and satisfaction of life for them. Moreover, a series of ineluctable negative life changes experienced in middle-age usually make the situation more complicated and stressful. We aimed to determine the trajectories and influential factors of sleep quality and menopausal symptoms and their longitudinal interrelationships among climacteric women.

METHODS

A total of 1875 community-dwelling climacteric women were included in this study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) were adopted to assess sleep quality and menopausal symptoms, respectively. Data were collected 4 times from March 2019 to December 2019, at a 3-month interval.

RESULTS

The Cross-lagged analysis showed that worse sleep quality and more severe menopausal symptoms over time after controlling for specified covariates, and more severe menopausal symptoms were predicted by declined sleep quality. The Generalized estimation equation model showed that education level, marital status, chronic diseases, life events, income, and age were the influential factors of sleep quality, while menopausal symptoms were impacted by marital status and income.

CONCLUSIONS

Increasing negative sleep quality and more severe menopausal symptoms over time contribute to the health burden of climacteric women. Menopausal symptoms could be alleviated by sleep quality improvement, which is influenced by education level, marital status, chronic diseases, life events, age, and economic factors.

Stressors and Coping Strategies among Menopausal Women during COVID-19 Pandemic Lockdown

Menopause is one of the women’s lifespan conditions that increases the potentiality of developing multiple physical and psychological diseases. Thus, it exposes the women to many fears and pressures, mainly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to assess stressors and coping strategies among Egyptian menopausal women during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used to identify the associated menopause complaints stressors and the types of coping strategies among 126 university working women ages 40 to 60. Three tools were used: the demographic-characteristic, menopause rating scale, and coping with menopause symptoms questionnaires. Results: The most prevalent complaints were psychological stressors with a mean of 88.8 (70.5%), where fear of infection and death by COVID-19 was the most common problem (87.3%). Further, the most coping technique used by participants was protective measures with a mean of 82.2 (65.2%).  There is a highly significant difference (p=0.001) with all coping strategies based on the women’s menopausal status. Conclusion and recommendations: The COVID-19 pandemic with menopause represents a significant burden on women at a critical time of their lives. Based on the results, it is essential to address the effectiveness of highly competent nursing care and support that includes effective coping strategies. Establishing and adopting nursing care guidelines that deal with stress and caring during this pandemic is highly recommended.

Ideal Cardiovascular Health Metrics and Risk of Incident Early-Onset Vasomotor Symptoms Among Premenopausal Women

CONTEXT

The relationship of ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) behaviors with preventing early-onset vasomotor symptoms (VMSs) is unknown.

OBJECTIVE

We investigated the association between CVH metrics and the development of early-onset VMSs in premenopausal women.

METHODS

This cohort study included 2541 premenopausal women aged 42 to 52 years without VMSs at baseline. CVH metrics were defined according to the American Heart Association Life Simple 7 metrics. Owing to limited availability of dietary information, CVH metrics were scored from 0 (unhealthy) to 6 (healthy) and classified into 3 groups: poor (0-2), intermediate (3-4), and ideal (5-6) CVH. VMSs, including hot flashes and night sweats, were assessed using the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life questionnaire. Moderate/severe VMSs was defined as a score of 3 or more points (range, 0 to 6; 6 being most bothersome).

RESULTS

During a median follow-up of 4.5 years, 1241 women developed VMSs before menopause. After adjustment for age, parity, education level, and alcohol consumption, the hazard ratio (HR) (95% CI) for developing early-onset VMSs comparing poor CVH group to the ideal group was 1.41 (1.07-1.86). CVH scores were also inversely associated with moderate/severe VMSs in a dose-response manner (P for trend = .004); specifically, multivariable-adjusted HRs comparing intermediate and poor CVH groups to the ideal group were 1.20 (95% CI, 1.02-1.43) and 1.57 (95% CI, 1.08-2.29), respectively.

CONCLUSION

Unfavorable CVH metrics were significantly associated with an increased risk of early-onset VMSs and its more severe forms among premenopausal women.

Clinical Efficacy of Curcumin and Vitamin E on Inflammatory-Oxidative Stress Biomarkers and Primary Symptoms of Menopause in Healthy Postmenopausal Women: A Triple-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial

Aims of the Study. Reducing estrogen levels due to menopause activates oxidative and inflammatory processes, which causes symptoms of menopause, anxiety, and sexual dysfunction. As a suggestion, potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents such as curcumin and vitamin E could be used as an effective alternative treatment due to parsimony, suitable access, and fewer side effects. Therefore, the present study was conducted to find out whether supplementation with curcumin and vitamin E affects inflammatory-oxidative stress biomarkers and primary symptoms of menopause in healthy postmenopausal women. Methods Used to Conduct the Study. The present study is a triple-blind parallel randomized controlled trial. Eighty-four eligible postmenopausal women aged 40 to 60 years old were randomly assigned into three groups using block randomization with an allocation ratio of 1 : 1 : 1. The curcumin group received one capsule containing 500 mg curcumin twice a day, the vitamin E group received one 500 mg capsule of vitamin E twice a day, and the placebo group took two placebo capsules containing 500 mg of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) daily for eight weeks. Demographic and anthropometric characteristics, dietary intake, and early symptoms of menopause were collected at baseline. Serum levels of total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured at baseline and after the intervention. Intervention safety and satisfaction with the intervention were also evaluated. Results of the Study. Eighty-one participants completed the trial and were finally analyzed. There were no statistically significant differences in demographic characteristics and dietary intake of participants (except for vitamin C intake, P=0.023) between the groups at baseline. The mean ± standard deviation (SD) score of total menopause symptoms, depression, anxiety, psychological, vasomotor, and physical domains significantly decreased within all groups (P < 0.05). Between-group analyses indicated that decreasing the mean score of anxiety in the vitamin E group was significantly more than in the placebo group (P=0.026). The mean (SD) serum levels of MDA and hs-CRP significantly decreased only in the curcumin group (P=0.009 and P=0.025, respectively). Serum levels of TAC significantly increased in curcumin and vitamin E groups (P < 0.001 and P=0.006, respectively). Conclusions Drawn from the Study and Clinical Implications. Curcumin could improve the oxidative stress (MDA and TAC) and inflammatory (hs-CRP) biomarkers. Vitamin E may also improve the antioxidant status by increasing the TAC levels. The alleviation of anxiety in the vitamin E group was more than in the placebo group. Clinical Trial Registration. The Association of Menopausal Symptoms and Social Support Among Saudi Women at Primary Health Care Centers in Taif, Saudi Arabia

Background

Menopause is a challenging period for all women. The severity of menopausal symptoms hurts their quality of life and daily activity. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the severity of menopausal symptoms are associated with social support and lifestyle factors among Saudi women to help policymakers develop the appropriate intervention health program.

Methods

A cross-sectional study of 361 middle-aged Saudi women was conducted through interviews using a valid and reliable questionnaire. The menopause rating scale (MRS) was used to determine the severity of menopausal symptoms and the multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS) was used to assess perceived social support among females. Linear regression was conducted to assess the association between MRS scores and MSPSS scores after adjustment of covariates.

Results

The mean total menopause rating scale was 13.7 ± 8.3. Physical and mental exhaustion (80.3%), joint and muscular discomfort (79.2%), and irritability (75.9%) were the most prevalent menopausal symptoms for all women. The mean MSPSS was calculated as 4.3 ±1.8. Perceived social support and lifestyle factors were significant predictors of menopausal symptoms.

Conclusions

Postmenopausal Saudi women complain of a variety of physical and psychological symptoms. The current study shows that social support, quitting smoking, losing weight, and increasing physical exercise can help to alleviate or reduce many of the unpleasant symptoms of menopause. This evidence will help policymakers design health intervention for this age group.

Health Promoting Lifestyle Behaviors and Sleep Quality Among Saudi Postmenopausal Women

Background

One of the most effective measures regarding improving women's health is to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between health-promoting behaviors and sleep quality among a sample of Saudi menopausal women.

Methods

A descriptive cross-sectional study was used to collect data from 410 Saudi postmenopausal women visiting primary healthcare care centers located in Sakaka, Jouf, Saudi Arabia, using the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLPII) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).

Results

The mean age of the study participants was 52.60 ± 4.65 years, the study findings highlighted that among all the HPLP domains, the highest mean score was observed for spiritual growth (24.00 ± 6.60) whereas the lowest score was observed for physical activity (16.18 ± 1.8). Statistically significant negative relations between the total score of HPLP and sleep quality score and menopausal symptoms (p &lt; 0.001, p &lt; 0.005), respectively. Total scores of lifestyle, health responsibility, and stress management were significant differences between participants with good and poor sleep quality. Being overweight/obese, physically inactive, having a chronic illness and poor sleep quality were predictors influencing health-promoting behavior.

Conclusion

Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II was more obvious in the good sleeper in form of health responsibility and stress management. Being overweight and or obese, having a chronic illness, and having poor sleep quality were the significant factors influencing health-promoting behaviors. Designing and performing educational interventional plans are crucial to create motivation toward a healthy lifestyle and improve the quality of their sleep.

Does Obesity Aggravate Climacteric Symptoms in Postmenopausal Women?

OBJECTIVE

 To determine if there is a correlation between body mass index (BMI) and climacteric symptoms in postmenopausal women.

METHODS

 The study sample was composed of 109 postmenopausal women with a mean age of 57 ±  8 years, mean body mass index (BMI) of 30 ±  6 kg/m², and 8 ±  8 years after menopause. For the assessment of the climacteric symptoms, the Blatt-Kupperman Index (BKI), the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), and the Cervantes Scale (CS) were used. Data analysis was performed through the Chi-squared test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the Bonferroni post hoc test, and multiple linear regression. The level of significance adopted was of p < 0.05. The statistical analyses were performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, United States) software, version 26.0.

RESULTS

 The multiple linear regression showed a positive association (p < 0.01) between BMI values and menopause symptoms when adjusted for age and time after menopause in the 3 questionnaires used (BKI: B = 0.432; CS: B = 304; and MRS: B = 302). Regarding symptom scores, the obese women had higher mean scores (p < 0.05) when compared to eutrophic women (BKI = 28 ±  10 and 20 ±  10; and MRS = 20 ±  10 and 13 ±  7, respectively). In the Chi-squared analysis, 28% of obese women had severe symptoms and 46% had moderate symptoms, while only 1% and 46% of eutrophic women had these same symptoms.

CONCLUSION

 There is an association between BMI and climacteric symptoms, and overweight or obese women have more intense and moderate symptoms than eutrophic women.

Quality of life of patients with bilateral oophorectomy before the age of 45 for the treatment of endometriosis

INTRODUCTION

The study aimed to evaluate the quality of life and associated factors among women who underwent bilateral oophorectomy (BO) before the age of 45 for the treatment of deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This cross-sectional study was carried out in 52 women who were treated from January 2014 to December 2019 in 2 public and private DIE surgical centers in Toulouse. All women answered the Menopausal Quality of Life questionnaire (MenQOL). Mean MenQOL scores were compared according to age at BO, smoking, BMI, level of education, delay between BO and the survey and post-BO hormone replacement therapy (HRT) using Mann-Whitney and Anova tests. Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to analyze the correlations between all the MEnQOL domain scores and clinical variables. The variables associated with the outcomes in univariate analyses with p < 0.2 were jointly evaluated using multiple linear regression.

RESULTS

The mean age at the time of the survey was 43.4 ± 3.4 years while the mean age at BO was 40.5 ± 3.4 years. The mean MenQOL score was 3.96 (± 1.45), with the highest scores in the sexual (4.77) and vasomotor (4.01) domains. BMI and smoking were independently and significantly associated with the mean total MenQOL score, all domain scores being significantly higher in overweight/obese women. A trend towards worse MenQOL scores was found in patients who had BO before the age of 41. We did not find any difference according to whether or not they were taking HRT.

CONCLUSION

This is a first study evaluating quality of life in a specific population of oophorectomized women under the age of 45 using MenQOL for DIE. While BO is effective in relieving pain in women with severe DIE, the induced premature menopause is associated with a poor quality of life, which deserves further attention.

The relationship between sleep quality and menopausal symptoms among postmenopausal women in Saudi Arabia

OBJECTIVES

To assess sleep quality and examine its relationship with menopausal symptoms among Saudi postmenopausal women.

METHODS

We carried out a cross-sectional study of 410 postmenopausal women, aged 50-60 years, visiting Prince Mutaib bin Abdulaziz Hospital, Maternity and Children Hospital, and primary health care clinics, Sakaka, Jouf, Saudi Arabia. The menopause rating scale (MRS) was used to assess menopause symptoms and severity, while the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality.

RESULTS

The participants' age was 53.04±4.15 years, their mean age at natural menopause was 49.14±3.07, and the meantime since their menopause was 6.50±3.84 years. The PSQI total mean score was 6.10±4.17, classified into good versus poor sleepers; 65.4% scored ≤5, and 34.6% scored >5. The Mann-Whitney analysis revealed that somatic and urogenital symptoms, and total MRS score were associated with poor sleep quality (p<0.001).

CONCLUSION

The study findings revealed that more than one-third of Saudi postmenopausal women had poor sleep quality.

Vasomotor menopausal disorders as a possible result of dysfunction of the microbiota-intestine-brain axis

The study involved clinical and laboratory examination of 54 women with vasomotor menopausal disorders divided into 3 subgroups depending on the duration of symptoms (not more than 12 months, about 3 years, from 5 to 7 years). The control group included 21 patients without vasomotor disorders during the menopausal period. Data from the general and obstetric-gynecological anamnesis and the results of objective and general clinical examinations were analyzed. To assess the state of intestinal microbiocenosis in patients, a bacteriological study of feces was used according to modern methods. In women with menopausal vasomotor disorders, chronic arterial hypertension, overweight, diabetes mellitus, chronic enterocolitis, and chronic pyelonephritis prevailed among somatic diseases. The study also revealed that these patients had a pronounced imbalance of the intensive microbiota, which was characterized by a significant decrease in the main representatives of the obligate microflora (Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus) and an increase in the number of opportunistic strains (Klebsiella and Clostridiodes difficile). Considering modern concepts, a change in the microbial composition of the intestine may be one of the possible trigger factors for the occurrence of vasomotor menopausal disorders. Further research will clarify the influence of the microbiome on the formation of the pathological menopausal symptom complex and improve the preventive and therapeutic measures in this category of women.

Life habits of postmenopausal women: Association of menopause symptom intensity and food consumption by degree of food processing

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate in postmenopausal women the association between menopause symptom intensity and the quality of life and clinical, anthropometric, and lifestyle factors, focusing on food consumption by degree of processing.

STUDY DESIGN

A cross-sectional study of 288 postmenopausal women using interviews.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

The Kupperman-Blatt Menopausal Index and the Women's Health Questionnaire were used to evaluate the main outcomes of menopausal symptom intensity and quality of life, respectively. Data on socioeconomic, clinical, anthropometric, and lifestyle variables (smoking, alcohol intake, physical activity, and food consumption) were collected.

RESULTS

Most women had moderate to severe intensity of menopausal symptoms. The highest tertile of ultra-processed food consumption was associated with a greater intensity of vasomotor symptoms (prevalence ratio [PR] 0.73, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 0.55-0.96) and sexual behavior (PR 1.22, CI 1.01-1.49). Higher intakes of sugar-sweetened beverages and sausages were associated with somatic symptoms (PR 1.23, CI 1.01-1.49) and poorer memory/concentration (PR 1.22, CI 1.02-1.47/ PR 1.22, CI 1.01-1.48). The highest tertile of vegetable intake was associated with greater protection against depressive mood (PR 0.64, CI 0.43-0.96), vasomotor symptoms (PR 0.79, CI 0.63-0, 99), and sleep disorders (PR 0.83, CI 0.69-0.99), and better quality of life (PR 0.79, CI 0.62-0.99).

CONCLUSION

More intense vasomotor, sexual, somatic, and memory and concentration symptoms are associated with a higher consumption of ultra-processed foods, whereas those with a higher consumption of vegetables reported lower menopause symptom intensity and a better quality of life.

Is cognitive performance of women sensitive to the severity of menopausal symptoms?

OBJECTIVE

Menopause is a natural phenomenon among women during their midlife, which is accompanied by unfavorable physical, physiological, and psychological consequences. Therefore, the major aim of the present cross-sectional study was to examine whether the cognitive performance of women is sensitive to the severity of menopausal symptoms.

METHODS

A total number of 404 rural women aged between 40 and 65 years were included in the present study. The menopausal symptoms and cognitive performance of the women were assessed using the Greene Climacteric Scale and Hindi Mini-Mental State Examination scale respectively.

RESULTS

The results of the present study demonstrated that women experiencing severe menopausal symptoms (higher Total Greene climacteric score) presented significantly lower mean values for orientation (8.11 vs 8.90, P < 0.001), registration (2.77 vs 2.91, P < 0.001), attention (4.31 vs 4.48, P < 0.01), recall (2.26 vs 2.53, P < 0.05), and language/visuo-spatial skills (7.13 vs 7.91, P < 0.001) as compared with their counterparts with mild menopausal symptoms. The multivariate linear regression model (after adjustment for age, marital status, and educational status) recorded severe depression and greater sexual dysfunction as the factors significantly associated with lower Mini-Mental State Examination scores.

CONCLUSION

Hence, the findings of the present study indicated that the cognitive performance of women was sensitive to severe depression and sexual dysfunction.

How perimenopause shaped perspectives on life during the pandemic: A study on india's working and non-working women

The menopausal transition is a challenging phase in a woman's life and has been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to examine the association between meaning in life, quality of life, and satisfaction with life among perimenopausal women during the pandemic, as well as to determine if there was a difference in attitudes towards life between working and non-working perimenopausal women. The study sample consisted of 114 perimenopausal women, with 64 being employed and 50 being non-employed. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed, and the results showed that satisfaction with life was positively correlated with both meaning in life and quality of life. Working perimenopausal women had a higher level of satisfaction with life (mean score of 63.24) as compared to non-working perimenopausal women (mean score of 50.14), but there was no significant difference in quality of life or meaning in life between the two groups. The study highlights the impact of various social and personal factors on how women perceive their lives during the pandemic and underscores the need for increased support and resources for perimenopausal women in the workplace. Additionally, promoting menopause awareness in general and in the workplace could help to reduce social barriers and improve women's perspectives on life, leading to an improvement in their overall quality of life and satisfaction with life. This study insisted on the need for giving importance to this stage in women's life-rather passing it just like that. Policy makers in the HR field should make a note to the finding and incorporate necessary amendment in terms of the female workforce.

Severity and factors of menopausal symptoms in middle-aged women in Gansu Province of China: a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the severity and risk factors of menopausal symptoms in the middle-aged women in Gansu Province of China.

METHODS

In this cross-sectional study, a total of 7319 women (aged 40-55 years) attended the health survey in Gansu Province in China were enrolled. Information on demographics, menopausal status, reproductive history, and history of chronic diseases was collected via a structured questionnaire. Severity of menopausal symptom was evaluated by the Modified Kupperman Menopausal Index. Ordinal logistic regression model was applied to explore its risk factors.

RESULTS

A total of 7319 participants were included in present study, among them, 3606 (49.27%) had moderate or severe menopausal symptom. Compared with premenopausal women, perimenopausal and postmenopausal women have a higher mKMI score. We observed that older age, higher BMI, non-married status, longer duration of menstruation (≥ 7 days), number of pregnancy (> 3 times), longer duration of breastfeeding (> 12 months), peri- or post-menopausal status, and menopause hormone therapy was positively associated with menopausal symptom score, while higher level of family income, educational and physical activity, and history of gynecological, breast or chronic disease were negatively associated with the score.

CONCLUSIONS

Numerous factors were associated with the severity of menopausal symptom among the Chinese women. Because it was gradually increased with aging, more attention is warranted to manage the menopausal symptom.

The association between sexual function and body image among postmenopausal women: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Postmenopause physiological changes may alter body image (BI) during the postmenopausal period of life. Body image dissatisfaction may have negative effects on the sexual function of women. The present study aims to assess the relationship between body image and sexual function during the postmenopausal period.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was performed on 231 postmenopausal women who were menopausal during the recent 5 years, aged > 40 years old, and referring to health centers in Tehran-Iran. The participants were recruited using a multi-stage sampling method. Data were collected using 3 questionnaires including socio-demographic, Fisher's Body Image, and female sexual function index (FSFI). Data were analyzed using SPSS 24 and multiple regression, Mann-Whitey, Pearson, and Spearman correlation tests.

RESULTS

Two hundred thirty-one postmenopausal women aged 52.53 ± 5.32 (mean ± SD) years old participated in the study. The mean and standard deviation of FSFI and BI of the women were respectively 19.59 ± 11.11(ranges 1.2-36) and 155.43 ± 37.09 (ranges from 46 to 230). According to FSFI, 62.8% of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) was reported. There were significant correlations between scores of total and all domains of FSFI with scores of total and all dimensions of BI. There was also a positive correlation between education and family income of the women and a negative correlation between age of husband and duration of menopause with their sexual function. Significant relationships were also shown between the women's and the husbands' jobs with the total score of women's sexual function. According to the multiple linear regression model, BI was a significant predictor of sexual function in postmenopausal women.

CONCLUSION

Body image is effective on the sexual function of postmenopausal women. Therefore, body image is necessary to be considered in future postmenopausal health promotion programs.

Work and health-related factors of presenteeism: a mediation analysis on the role of menopausal symptoms between job demands and presenteeism among a sample of social service women employees

Purpose

Building on prior studies on the role of health-related and job-related issues in affecting presenteeism, the present study tested a mediation model of the relationship between job demands and presenteeism by exploring the mediation effect of menopausal symptoms.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through a self-report questionnaire involving social service menopausal employees (N = 204) from a public municipal organization. The survey was cross-sectional and non-randomized.

Findings

Results revealed that job demands, namely emotional, cognitive and physical demands, were significantly and positively associated with presenteeism. Furthermore, mediation analysis evidenced that physical job demands were also associated with higher levels of menopausal physical symptom bothersomeness, which in turn serves as a condition to increase the act of presenteeism.

Originality/value

The findings of this study widen the perspective on presenteeism research by evidencing the role of an overlooked health-related factor in relation to the act of presenteeism, that is the menopausal transition. Insights for the development of targeted preventive measures of the act of presenteeism and menopausal symptom management in the workplace may also be derived from these results.

The impact of physical activity on psychological well-being in women aged 45-55 years during the Covid pandemic: A mixed-methods investigation

Evidence suggests that being physically active may improve quality of life through the menopausal transition. This study is one of the first to investigate how meeting the UK Physical Activity Guidelines (PAG) impacted quality of life, stress, coping and menopausal symptoms in UK midlife women, aged 45-55 years, during the unfolding Covid pandemic (Phase 1 quantitative, n=164). The study also explored their motivation to undertake regular physical activity during Covid lockdown (Phase 2 qualitative, n=4). An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was used to collate quantitative (survey) and qualitative (focus group) data. Participants who met PAG experienced fewer depressive symptoms and less perceived stress, and had better physical and mental health and quality of life than women who did not. This was supported by focus group discussions reporting lack of facilities, time constraints, reduced social support and existing health complaints as barriers to physical activity. Factors motivating women to exercise during Covid lockdown were benefits for physical and mental health, and support from friends (Qualitative). Women are postmenopausal for one-third of their lives, and health interventions need to promote positive healthy ageing around menopause. Menopausal changes could be used by clinicians as cues to action to promote female health and well-being. Clinicians should be promoting the health benefits of exercise and making women aware of the importance of aiming to meet the PAG for optimal health benefits. Women should be encouraged to increase their levels of physical activity by making plans and setting goals and gaining support by exercising with friends or family, as a way to better control menopausal symptoms.

Midwifery-oriented group counseling based on the GATHER approach on quality of life of women during the transition to menopause: a randomized controlled trial

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to determine the effect of midwifery-oriented group counseling based on the GATHER model on the quality of life of women during the transition to menopause.

METHODS

This randomized controlled clinical trial was performed on 90 women 45 years or older in 2019 to 2020 in Kermanshah, Iran. The women were assigned into two groups using a randomized blocked design. In the intervention group, counseling sessions based on the GATHER approach (Greet, Ask, Tell, Help, Explain, and Return) were performed in four sessions of 45 to 90 minutes. Sociodemographic and quality of life (MENQOL) questionnaires were used for data gathering. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney test, sample t test, and Wilcoxon using SPSS 24.

RESULTS

The mean age of women was 49.04 ± 3.94 and 49.62 ± 3.63 in the intervention and control group, respectively (P = 0.412). There was no significant difference between the two groups regarding demographic characteristics and quality of life before the intervention (P > 0.05). There was a considerable difference between the mean score of quality of life 55.62 ± 18.37 and 73.64 ± 25.84 (P = 0.001) and its dimensions, especially for physical symptoms (P = 0.002), between the two groups 4 weeks after the intervention.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study suggest that midwifery-oriented group counseling based on the GATHER approach may improve the life quality of women during the transition to menopause.

Effects of Menopause on Sexual Function in Indian Women: A McCoy's Questionnaire-Based Assessment

Background:

Menopause is associated with physical, physiological, psychological changes and may lead to sexual dysfunction (SD) effecting woman's health and well-being. Scientific research in the area of female sexuality in India is scant. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate female sexual function at perimenopause and menopause and determine the association between sociodemographic and physiological factors with sexual function.

Materials and Methods:

This was a cross-sectional hospital-based study carried out in perimenopausal and menopausal women. Study participant's details were collected by gynecologists and clinical research professionals following the participant's informed consent. The case report and McCoy female sexuality questionnaire were used. The association between sociodemographic status and sexual function was determined. Data were summarized using descriptive statistics for portraying profile of the participants and t-test for comparison.

Results:

A total of 129 women in the menopausal (SD − 3.26) and 112 in the premenopausal group (SD − 6.01) were enrolled. The sociodemographic parameters did not significantly affect the sexual function scores in both groups. In terms of vaginal atrophy, a significant increase in urgency was noted in the postmenopause group. The general domain of sexual function was significantly lower in menopausal than and perimenopausal with a P < 0.001. Looking at individual domains of sexual function, for sexual interest, satisfaction, vaginal lubrication, and orgasm, the mean value of perimenopausal participants was significantly higher when compared to menopausal women; for a primary partner domain, no significant differences between the two groups were noted.

Conclusion:

Overall, the sociodemographic profile did not impact sexual function in this study. Compared with menopausal women, perimenopausal women showed better, more complete sexual function based on McCoy's score except partner-related domain that is constant from perimenopause to menopause in a monogamous relationship.

Despite it is generally recognized the beneficial role of physical activity, large portion of the population is physically inactive. Very alarmingly, the well-known gender gap in physical activity is constantly increasing. Several barriers obstacle women to perform physical activity although exercising would be of paramount importance for their health in particular during pregnancy and menopause. In addition to physical health benefits, physical activity may influence well-being and resilience, greatly impacting on quality of life.

Here we explore the relationship between physical activity resilience and well-being in a group of 1107 female residents in the Metropolitan area of Naples.

Postmenopausal Symptoms and Their Correlates among Saudi Women Attending Different Primary Health Centers

(1) Background and objectives: Due to increasing life expectancy, more than one-third of women’s life can be spent in the postmenopausal period. In this period, women have different somatic, psychological, and urogenital symptoms. The present study was done to evaluate postmenopausal symptoms and their correlations among Saudi women attending different primary health centers. (2) Methods: adopting a cross-sectional study was done among 845 postmenopausal women attending different primary health centers. The menopause rating scale (MRS) was utilized to investigate the prevalence and severity of different menopausal manifestations. Data collection was done using a structured anonymous questionnaire disseminated during face-to-face interviews. Analysis of data was done utilizing the SPSS program, version 24. (3) Results: The total MRS score was 15.68 ± 6.85. The mean score of the subscales were: 5.56 ± 2.78 for the somatic domain, 6.04 ± 2.89 for the psychological domain, and 4.08 ± 2.32 for the urogenital domain. Joint and muscle pain (25.2%) and sleep problems (18.6%) were the most prevalent severe/very severe somatic symptoms. The most severe/very severe symptoms of the psychological domain were mental and physical exhaustion (20.2%) and depressed mode (19.2%), while that of the urogenital domain were sexual problems (20.1%) and bladder problems (16.3%). Significant predictors of the subscales of MRS were sociodemographic characteristics such as age, residence, marital status, educational level, and occupation. Furthermore, history of chronic diseases, parity, and menopause duration were significant predictors of the subscales of MRS. (4) Conclusion: women in the present study experience different postmenopausal symptoms. Health care providers should consider this crucial stage of women’s life to help elderly women manage these different postmenopausal manifestations.

Age of Natural Menopause Among Jordanian Women and Factors Related to Premature and Early Menopause

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to assess factors related to the onset of premature/early natural menopause among Jordanian women.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted in early 2016. Subjects were enrolled based on random drop-off technique to the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinics at the Jordan University Hospital. Women 18 years of age and above were initially eligible to enroll, and women who had surgically induced menopause or specific disease were excluded from the analysis. Relevant data were collected using a questionnaire that included 30 questions. The following variables were collected: socio-demographic, body mass index, chronic conditions, diseases, reproductive characteristics, and health status. Hormone indicators of menopause were tested by measuring estrogen (E2) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels. Age at natural menopause (ANM) was self-reported retrospectively and considered an independent variable against BMI, smoking, hormone therapy, and concomitant diseases. Association analysis and multinomial logistic regression were used to examine the associated factors of ANM with adjusted odds ratios (ORs), and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported.

RESULTS

A total of 409 women were included in the analysis, aged between 20-75 years. The mean ANM in our sample was 48.5±5.0, with 2.7% of the women experienced premature menopause (ANM <40) and 7.8% early menopause (ANM 40-44). Within the menopause women (n=242), the percentage of women who had premature menopause was 4.5%, 13.6% with early menopause, and 21.1% with late menopause (ANM >52). Smoking was the major risk factor for premature/early menopausal age among Jordanian women with an OR of 2.46 (95% CI: 1.08-5.59, p<0.05). On the other hand, women with occasional arthritis symptoms and diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and their combination were associated with average (45-52 years) or late menopause (>52 years).

CONCLUSION

Smoking is the main contributor of premature/early menopause in Jordanian women. Increased awareness and public health policy about the adverse effects of smoking on women's reproductive health are needed.

Lifestyle practices and menopause-related symptoms among women in rural communities of Ado-Ekiti local government area, Nigeria

OBJECTIVE

Lifestyle modification is consistently recommended for healthy living during menopause; nonetheless, there is paucity of data on menopausal experiences and lifestyle practices of women in rural communities of Nigeria. This study assessed the lifestyle practices of menopausal women, their experiences of menopause-related symptoms and the influence of lifestyle practices on their experiences of menopause-related symptoms.

METHOD

A descriptive cross-sectional design was used in this study. Systematic random sampling was used to select 271 menopausal women at household level in rural communities of Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area in Ekiti State, Nigeria. A self-developed structured questionnaire was used to assess lifestyle practices while modified menopause rating scale was used to assess menopausal-related symptoms of the women. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS version 22 at 0.05 level of significance.

RESULTS

Findings revealed that 58.3% had poor lifestyle, while 41.0% and 0.7% had moderate and good lifestyle, respectively. Findings showed that 66.4% of the women experienced moderate menopause-related symptoms, while 15.5% and 0.4% of the women had severe and very severe menopause-related symptoms respectively. Result of the multiple regression indicated that Exercise (β = 0.22, t = 3.63, p = .01), Nutrition (β = 0.13, t = 2.23, p = .02) and Substance use (β = 0.04, t = 2.25, p = .02) were major predictors of menopause-related symptoms.

CONCLUSION

The study concluded that positive lifestyle modification could help reduce menopausal-related symptoms.

Quality of life and psychological symptoms for women with bipolar disorder - a comparison between reproductive, menopause transition and post-menopause phases

OBJECTIVE

The menopause transition may be associated with increased symptoms for women living with bipolar disorder; however, few have explored how this compares with other reproductive phases. The aim of this study was to compare women at reproductive, menopause transition and post-menopause phases on measures of quality of life and psychological symptoms associated with bipolar disorder.

STUDY DESIGN

Women with bipolar disorder took part in a large international survey conducted online and were categorised into reproductive stages using the STRAW and Monash criteria. The 498 participants were divided into three groups: 202 (41%) in the reproductive age group, 101 (20%) in the menopause transition group and 195 (39%) in the post-menopause group.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

The Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales - 21 (DASS-21), the Altman Mania Rating Scale (ASRM) and the Bipolar Disorder Quality of Life scale (BD-QoL).

RESULTS

BD-QoL scores were significantly lower in the menopause transition group than in the other groups and that group was more likely to report being constantly depressed over the past year than the other groups. Anxiety was significantly higher in the menopause transition and post-menopause groups compared with the reproductive age group.

CONCLUSIONS

Quality of life and depression are impacted by the menopause transition for women with bipolar disorder. However, anxiety may be a clinical issue for women in both the post-menopause and the menopause transition phases. Research is needed to determine how symptoms vary across the reproductive life cycle for women with bipolar disorder and if targeted treatments may assist.

Psychological Climacteric Symptoms and Attitudes toward Menopause among Emirati Women

Menopause is an inevitable developmental event that women encounter at an age of 42–54 years. The drop of estrogen levels that accompanies cessation of menstruation is associated with multiple vasomotor, physical, neuropsychological, and sexual symptoms, which may hamper quality of life. This study aimed to examine the severity of psychological symptoms and their correlates among peri- and postmenopausal Emirati women (N = 60, mean age = 54.88 ± 6 years). Participants were interviewed using the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life (MENQOL) and attitudes toward menopause scale (ATMS). In four path analysis models, vasomotor symptoms, weight gain, and fatigue had significant direct effects on symptoms of anxiety, depression (only weight gain and fatigue), and psychological distress. Fatigue significantly mediated the effects of vasomotor symptoms and weight gain on symptoms of anxiety, depression (only vasomotor symptoms), psychological distress, and memory problems. These models explained 47.6%, 44.5%, 56.6%, and 29.1% of the variances in anxiety, depression, psychological distress, and memory problems, respectively. Participants with more severe menopausal symptoms expressed more negative attitudes toward menopause though regression analysis revealed that only vasomotor symptoms could significantly contribute to ATMS scores. In conclusion, psychological distress is widespread among menopausal women, and it is associated with vasomotor symptoms, fatigue, and change of body composition (obesity). Psychological symptoms, along with vasomotor symptoms, express a key link to negative attitudes toward menopause. Therefore, interventional strategies that target psychological distress may promote coping with midlife transition and improve mental health among menopausal women.
