Abstract
Sleep is a vital biological function that significantly influences overall health. While sleep deprivation (SD) and circadian rhythm disruption are known to negatively impact various organs, their specific effects on kidney function remain understudied. This study aimed to investigate the impact of chronic partial sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm disruption on renal function in rats, providing insights into the relationship between sleep disturbances and kidney health. A total of 40 male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: a control group, a group with circadian rhythm disruption (CIR), a group with sleep deprivation during the light phase (SD-AM), a group with sleep deprivation during the dark phase (SD-PM), and a group with combined sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm disruption (SD-CIR). Sleep deprivation was induced using a specialized machine, depriving rats of sleep for 4 h daily, while circadian rhythm disruption was achieved through a 3.5-h light/dark cycle. After four weeks, kidney tissues and blood samples were collected for histological and biochemical analyses. The results showed that all experimental groups exhibited reduced water intake, with the CIR and SD-CIR groups also showing significantly lower food intake and reduced weight gain compared to controls. Oxidative stress markers revealed increased serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the SD-PM and SD-CIR groups. Despite these metabolic and oxidative changes, histological examination of the kidneys revealed no significant alterations in renal structure or function across the groups. This study highlights the negative effects of chronic partial sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm disruption on feeding behavior, weight gain, and oxidative stress in rats. However, these interventions did not significantly alter renal structure or function. Further research is needed to explore the physiological mechanisms underlying these findings and the potential long-term effects of sleep disturbances on kidney health.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Ziziphi Spinosae Semen and Polygalae Radix (ZSS-PR) constitute a traditional Chinese herbal combination with notable applications in clinical and experimental settings due to their evident sedative and calming effects. Aligned with traditional Chinese medicine principles, Ziziphi Spinosae Semen supports cardiovascular health, nourishes the liver, and induces mental tranquillity. Simultaneously, Polygalae Radix elicits calming effects, fosters clear thinking, and reinstates proper coordination between the heart and kidneys. ZSS-PR is commonly employed as a therapeutic intervention for various insomnia types, demonstrating distinct clinical efficacy. Our previous study findings provide evidence that ZSS-PR administration significantly reduces sleep onset latency, increases overall sleep duration, and improves abnormal neurotransmitter levels in a murine insomnia model. AIM OF STUDY This investigation aimed to scrutinize the intrinsic regulatory mechanism of ZSS-PR in managing insomnia using gut microbiota and serum metabolomics techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS Mice were given DL-4-Chlorophenylalanine to induce insomnia and then treated with ZSS-PR. The open-field test assessed the animals' spontaneous activity. Concentrations of neurotransmitters, endocrine hormones, and cytokines in the duodenum were measured using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, and brain histopathology was evaluated with H&E staining. The impact of ZSS-PR on the metabolic profile was examined by liquid chromatography couped to high resolution mass spectrometry, and 16S rDNA sequencing was used to study the influence of ZSS-PR on the gut microbiota. Additionally, the content of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) was analyzed by GC-MS. Finally, correlation analysis investigated relationships between biochemical markers, metabolites, SCFAs, and gut microbiota. RESULTS ZSS-PR treatment significantly increased movement time and distance in mice with insomnia and improved pathological impairments in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. It also restored abnormal levels of biochemical markers in the gut of insomnia-afflicted mice, including 5-hydroxytryptamine, dopamine, gastrin, melatonin, tumour necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-1β. Metabolomics findings showed that ZSS-PR had a significant restorative effect on 15 endogenous metabolites in mice with insomnia. Furthermore, ZSS-PR primarily influenced five metabolic pathways, such as phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis, glutamine, and glutamate metabolism. Additionally, gut microbiota analysis revealed notable alterations in both diversity and microbial composition after ZSS-PR treatment. These changes were primarily attributed to the relative abundances of microbiota, including Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, Fusobacteriota, Muribaculaceae_unclassified, and Ligilactobacillus. The results of SCFAs analysis demonstrated that ZSS-PR effectively restored abnormal levels of acetic acid, propionic acid, isobutyric acid, butyric acid, isovaleric acid, and valeric acid in insomniac mice. Subsequent correlation analysis revealed that microbiota show obvious correlations with both biochemical markers and metabolites. CONCLUSIONS The results provide compelling evidence that ZSS-PR effectively mitigates abnormal activity, reduces cerebral pathological changes, and restores abnormal levels of neurotransmitters, endocrine hormones, and cytokines in mice with insomnia. The underlying mechanism is intricately linked to the modulation of gut microbiota and endogenous metabolic pathways.

Abstract
Previous studies have related single essential metal elements (EMEs) to sleep quality among older adults, however, the association of the EME mixture with sleep quality remained poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between single EMEs and the EME mixture and sleep quality in older adults living in Chinese communities. This study consisted of 3957 older adults aged 60 years or over. Urinary concentrations of cobalt (Co), vanadium (V), selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), strontium (Sr), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) were detected using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Sleep quality was evaluated using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The associations of single EMEs and EME mixture with sleep quality were assessed using logistic regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models, respectively. Adjusted single-element logistic regression models showed that Mo (OR = 0.927, 95%CI:0.867-0.990), Sr (OR = 0.927, 95%CI:0.864-0.994), and Mg (OR = 0.934, 95%CI:0.873-0.997) were negatively related to poor sleep quality. BKMR models exhibited similar results. Also, higher levels of the EME mixture in urine were inversely related to the odds of poor sleep quality after adjustment for covariates, and Mo had the largest conditional posterior inclusion probability (condPIP) value in the mixture. Mo, Sr, and Mg were negatively related to poor sleep quality, separately and as the mixture. The EME mixture in urine was associated with decreased odds of poor sleep quality in older adults, and Mo was the greatest contributor within the mixture. Additional cohort research is warranted to clarify the relationship of multiple EMEs with sleep quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is widely recognized that ambient air pollution can induce various detrimental health outcomes. However, evidence linking ambient air pollutants and hyperuricemia incidence is scarce. OBJECTIVES To assess the association between long-term air pollution exposure and the risk of hyperuricemia. METHODS In this study, a total of 5854 government employees without hyperuricemia were recruited and followed up from January 2018 to June 2021 in Hunan Province, China. Hyperuricemia was defined as serum uric acid (SUA) level of >420 μmol/L for men and >360 μmol/L for women or use of SUA-lowering medication or diagnosed as hyperuricemia during follow-up. Data from local air quality monitoring stations were used to calculate individual exposure levels of PM10, PM2.5, SO2 and NO2 by inverse distance weightingn (IDW) method. Cox proportional hazard model was applied to evaluate the causal relationships between air pollutant exposures and the risk of hyperuricemia occurrence after adjustment for potential confounders and meanwhile, restricted cubic spline was used to explore the dose-response relationships. RESULTS The results indicated that exposures to PM10 (hazard ratio, HR = 1.042, 95% conficence interal, 95% CI: 1.028, 1.057), PM2.5 (HR = 1.204, 95% CI: 1.141, 1.271) and NO2 (HR = 1.178, 95% CI: 1.125,1.233) were associated with an increased HR of hyperuricemia. In addition, a nonlinear dose-response relationship was found between PM10 exposure level and the HR of hyperuricemia (p for nonlinearity = 0.158) with a potential threshold of 50.11 μg/m3. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that participants usually waking up at night and using natural ventilation were more vulnerable to the exposures of PM10, PM2.5, NO2, and SO2. CONCLUSION Long-term exposures to ambient PM10, PM2.5 and NO2 are associated with an increased incidence of hyperuricemia among Chinese government employees.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hyperuricemia is associated with metabolic and cardiovascular diseases and mortality. Efforts to lower the risk of hyperuricemia in various ways are needed as the prevalence of these diseases increases in postmenopausal women. Studies have shown that one of these methods is associated with adequate sleep duration, which is related to a low risk of hyperuricemia. Considering that it is difficult for people to get enough sleep in modern society, this study hypothesized that weekend catch-up sleep could be an alternative. To our knowledge, no past study has investigated the relation between weekend catch-up sleep and hyperuricemia in postmenopausal women. Hence, the aim of this research was to estimate the relation between weekend catch-up sleep and hyperuricemia with insufficient sleep in postmenopausal women during weekday or workday. METHODS This study included 1,877 participants extracted from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VII. The study population was divided into weekend catch-up sleep and non-weekend catch-up sleep groups. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were derived using multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Weekend catch-up sleep had a significantly lower prevalence of hyperuricemia after adjusting for confounders (odds ratio, 0.758 [95% confidence interval, 0.576-0.997]). In a subgroup analysis, weekend catch-up sleep of 1 to 2 hours was significantly correlated with a lower prevalence of hyperuricemia after adjusting for confounders (odds ratio: 0.522 [95% confidence interval, 0.323-0.845]). CONCLUSIONS Weekend catch-up sleep had a decreased prevalence of hyperuricemia in postmenopausal women with sleep deprivation.

Abstract
Objectives Evidence has shown that nocturnal sleep duration is associated with the risk of hyperuricemia, yet the findings are inconsistent. Thus, we aimed at exploring the association between nocturnal sleep duration and the risk of hyperuricemia in Chinese government employees. Methods A total of 10,321 government employees aged 20-60 years were collected from the Cohort Study on Chronic Diseases among Government Employees in Hunan Province, China. Sleep duration was self-reported. And serum uric acid levels >420 μmol/L in men and >360 μmol/L in women were considered hyperuricemia. The association between nocturnal sleep duration and hyperuricemia risk was examined utilizing multivariate logistic regression models. To further examine the connection between nocturnal sleep duration and serum uric acid levels, multiple linear regression analyses were utilized. Results The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 17.2%. The results of logistic regression demonstrated that, in contrast to participants whose sleep duration was 7-8 h, those who slept for <7 h had an elevated risk of hyperuricemia (OR = 1.343, 95%CI: 1.126, 1.601). Further stratified analysis revealed that this association was still observed in those without obesity (OR = 1.365; 95%CI: 1.127, 1.655), hypertension (OR = 1.290, 95%CI: 1.054, 1.578), or diabetes mellitus (OR = 1.361, 95%CI: 1.136, 1.631). Multiple linear regression showed that shorter sleep duration (< 7 h) was positively correlated with serum uric acid levels. In comparison to individuals who slept for 7-8 h, those with sleep duration of fewer than 7 h had serum uric acid levels that were 7.231 μmol/L (95% CI: 2.875, 11.588) higher. Conclusion Short nocturnal sleep duration (< 7 h) was associated with a higher risk of hyperuricemia, especially in participants without obesity, hypertension, or diabetes mellitus. Besides, short nocturnal sleep duration was related to greater uric acid levels.

Abstract
Background and aims Metabolic syndrome is common nowadays and may increase risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular complications and even mortality. Renal cysts are also frequently found during routine examination. However, the relationship between simple renal cysts (SRCs) and metabolic syndrome remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association of SRCs with metabolic syndrome. Methods A total of 16,216 subjects aged ≥18 years were enrolled in this study. SRCs were diagnosed with ultrasonography by finding: sharp, thin posterior walls, a round/oval shape, absence of internal echoes, and posterior enhancement. SRCs were categorized by number (0, 1, and ≥2) and size (<2 and ≥2 cm). Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed according to the consensus statement from the International Diabetes Federation. Results In multivariate analysis, SRCs were positively related to metabolic syndrome (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.06-1.34). The risk of metabolic syndrome was higher for SRCs with a number ≥2 (OR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.08-1.68) and size ≥2 cm (OR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.10-1.61). When considering the SRC number and size concomitantly, SRCs with a number ≥2/size ≥2 cm (OR: 1.42, 95% CI: 1.02-1.98) or <2/size ≥2 cm (OR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.04-1.62) were positively related to metabolic syndrome. Conclusions Simple renal cysts were found to be related to a higher risk of metabolic syndrome, and the association is more significant in those with larger (sizes ≥2cm) or plural (numbers ≥2) SRCs.

Abstract
Background Observational studies have suggested a potential non-linear association between sleep duration and hyperuricemia. However, the causal nature and sex-specific differences are poorly understood. We aimed to determine the shape of sex-specific causal associations between sleep duration and hyperuricemia in the UK Biobank. Methods Logistic regression was used to investigate the observational association between self-reported sleep duration and hyperuricemia among 387,980 white British participants (mean age: 56.9 years and 46.0% males). Linear and non-linear Mendelian Randomization (MR) analyses were performed to assess the causal association between continuous sleep duration and hyperuricemia. The causal effects of genetically predicted short (<7 h) and long (>8 h) sleep durations on hyperuricemia were further estimated, respectively. Results Traditional observational analysis suggested U- and J-shaped associations between sleep duration and hyperuricemia in females and males, respectively. Linear MR did not support the causal effect of sleep duration on hyperuricemia. Non-linear MR demonstrated an approximately U-shaped causal association between continuous sleep duration and hyperuricemia in overall participants and females, but not in males. Genetically predicted short sleep duration was significantly associated with hyperuricemia in females (OR [95% CI]: 1.21 [1.08–1.36]; P = 0.001), but not in males (1.08 [0.98–1.18]; P = 0.137). By contrast, genetically predicted long sleep duration was not significantly associated with the risk of hyperuricemia in either females or males. Conclusion Genetically predicted short sleep duration is a potential causal risk factor for hyperuricemia for females but has little effect on males. Long sleep duration does not appear to be causally associated with hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Little is known about the association of sleep duration with hyperuricemia. Especially lacking is evidence from longitudinal studies. Based on the MJ Health Examination Database in Beijing, China, a prospective study was designed. Participants were classed into short, normal, and long groups by sleep duration. The Cox regression model was used to estimate the hazard risk of hyperuricemia for short or long sleep duration compared with the normal group after adjusting for potential confounders. During a median 3.08 years follow-up, 4868 (14.31%) incident hyperuricemia events were documented among 34,025 participants with a crude incidence rate of 39.49 per 1000 persons. Years after adjusting for potential confounders, a 7% higher risk of hyperuricemia in the short sleep duration group (<7 h, 95% confidence interval: 1.01−1.14) and a 15% lower risk in the long sleep duration group (≥8 h, 95%CI: 0.74−0.97) were found compared with the normal group (7−8 h) (p for trend < 0.001). Nevertheless, the association of the short sleep duration group was marginally significant after further adjustment of the count of white blood cells (hazard ratio: 1.07, 95%CI: 1.00−1.13). Sleep duration was inversely associated with hyperuricemia, which highlights the public health significance of sufficient sleep duration for preventing hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Background Sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality contribute to increases in oxidative stress, antioxidant imbalance, and a pro-inflammatory state which may predispose to a higher risk of diabetes. Our objective was to estimate the contributions of C-reactive protein (CRP), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), and micronutrient antioxidants (bilirubin, carotenoids, uric acid, vitamins A, C-E?) to the relationships between sleep-fasting insulin concentration and -glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Methods Data from the 2005/06 US National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey were used (N = 1,946; 20 y+). Sleep quality and quantity was assessed by the Sleep Disorders Questionnaire, and fasting blood was collected to quantify CRP, GGT, antioxidant micronutrients, insulin concentration, and HbA1c. The bootstrap method was used to estimate the amount of mediation or contribution of these mediators to the sleep-insulin concentration and -HbA1c relationships, which were quantified as large (≥0.25) or moderate (≥0.09). Results The sleep duration-fasting insulin relationship was mediated by GGT, carotenoids, uric acid, and vitamins C and D, whereas CRP and bilirubin were non-significant mediators of a moderate effect size. Similarly, the sleep quality-fasting insulin relationship was mediated by CRP, bilirubin and vitamin C, whereas GGT, carotenoids, uric acid, and vitamin D were non-significant large-to-moderate mediators. To a lesser degree, these micronutrients mediated for the relationship between sleep-HbA1c levels. Conclusion Several factors related to inflammation, oxidative stress, and antioxidant status were found to lie on the pathway of the sleep-insulin and -glycemic control relationships. Sleep hygiene, reduced systemic inflammation/oxidative stress, and optimal antioxidants intake are potentially beneficial targets for managing diabetes risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Evidence on the association of snoring, daily sleep duration (daytime napping and night sleep duration) with hyperuricemia (HUA) was limited, especially in the resources-poor areas. This study aimed to investigate the independent effect of snoring frequency and daily sleep duration on HUA prevalence in rural Chinese adults. METHODS AND RESULTS 29,643 participants aged 18-79 years were included in the final cross-sectional analysis from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. Multivariate logistic regression and linear regression models with HUA and serum uric acid (SUA) levels as dependent variables were conducted, respectively. Of the 29,643 included adults, 3498 suffered from HUA. Compared to never snoring, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of HUA for rare snoring, occasional snoring, and habitual snoring were 1.35 (1.17, 1.56), 1.30 (1.14, 1.47), and 1.59 (1.47, 1.73), respectively (P for trend <0.001). Compared with no napping, participants who had daytime napping of 61-90 and > 91 min were associated with a 29% and 30% increase in the prevalence of HUA, respectively (P for trend <0.001). But in night sleep duration groups, no significant associations were observed. The positive associations between snoring and HUA were attenuated in people aged ≥65 and people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (both P for interaction <0.05). CONCLUSION Habitual snoring or longer daytime napping was independently associated with increased HUA prevalence and SUA levels in rural Chinese adults, which indicates the significance of early intervention and treatment of snoring and longer daytime napping to prevent hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Introduction Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a pathological hyperglycemic state related to the dysregulation of insulin. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common chronic complication in diabetic patients. A vegetarian diet could be one of the preventive strategies for the occurrence of CKD in patients with diabetes mellitus. However, it is still unknown whether a vegetarian diet lowers the occurrence of CKD in DM patients. Research Design and Methods This retrospective study was conducted at Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital from 5 September 2005 to 31 December 2016. Subjects with an HbA1c level > 6.5% or previous history of diabetes mellitus elder than 40 years were grouped based on self-reported dietary habits (vegetarians, lacto-ovo vegetarians and omnivores) in the structured questionnaire. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to estimate the direct and indirect effects of variables on the occurrence of chronic kidney disease. Results Among these 2,797 subjects, the participants were grouped into dietary habits as vegans (n = 207), lacto-ovo vegetarians (n = 941) and omnivores (n = 1,649). The incidence of overall CKD was higher in the omnivore group [36.6% vs 30.4% (vegans) and 28.5% (lacto-ovo vegetarian), p < 0.001]. In the SEM model, after adjusting for age and sex, the lacto-ovo vegetarian [OR: 0.68, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.57–0.82] and vegan groups (OR 0.68, 95% CI: 0.49–0.94) were both associated with a lower risk of CKD occurrence than the omnivore group. The vegan diet and lacto-ovo diet lowered the risk related to a high BMI (OR: 0.45, p < 0.001, OR: 0.58, p < 0.001) and hyperuricemia (OR: 0.53, p < 0.001; OR: 0.55, p < 0.001) for the occurrence of CKD. Conclusion Vegetarian dietary habits were associated with a lower occurrence of CKD in DM patients.

Abstract
Liver fibrosis is associated with liver-related outcomes, yet often remains underdiagnosed in primary care settings. Hyperuricemia is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but the relationship between hyperuricemia and liver fibrosis remains unclear. Data on individuals without NAFLD is also limited. We investigated the association between hyperuricemia and liver fibrosis in subjects with and without NAFLD. This study recruited 11,690 relevant participants from a health-checkup center. NAFLD was based on ultrasonography. Hyperuricemia was defined as serum uric acid > 6.0 mg/dL in women and >7.0 mg/dL in men. Significant liver fibrosis was diagnosed with the aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index ≥0.5. The following were positively associated with significant liver fibrosis: hyperuricemia (p = 0.001), age ≥ 65 years (p < 0.001), male gender (p < 0.001), obesity (p = 0.009), hypertension (p = 0.002), diabetes (p < 0.001), and NAFLD (p < 0.001) in the logistic regression. The positive association of hyperuricemia with significant liver fibrosis remained in subjects with NAFLD (p = 0.001), but not in subjects without NAFLD. In conclusion, hyperuricemia increased the associated risk of significant liver fibrosis. The positively associated risk existed in subjects with NAFLD, but not in those without it.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia is an abnormal purine metabolic disease that occurs when there is an excess of uric acid in the blood, associated with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, gout, and renal disease. Dietary intervention is one of the most promising strategies for preventing hyperuricemia and controlling uric acid concentrations. Tea (Camellia sinensis) is known as one of the most common beverages and the source of dietary polyphenols. However, the effect of tea on hyperuricemia is unclear. Recent evidence shows that a lower risk of hyperuricemia is associated with tea intake. To better understand the anti-hyperuricemia effect of tea, this review first briefly describes the pathogenesis of hyperuricemia and the processing techniques of different types of tea. Next, the epidemiological and experimental studies of tea and its bioactive compounds on hyperuricemia in recent years were reviewed. Particular attention was paid to the anti-hyperuricemia mechanisms targeting the hepatic uric acid synthase, renal uric acid transporters, and intestinal microbiota. Additionally, the desirable intake of tea for preventing hyperuricemia is provided. Understanding the anti-hyperuricemia effect and mechanisms of tea can better utilize it as a preventive dietary strategy.HighlightsHigh purine diet, excessive alcohol/fructose consumption, and less exercise/sleep are the induction factors of hyperuricemia.Tea and tea compounds showed alleviated effects for hyperuricemia, especially polyphenols.Tea (containing caffeine or not) is not associated with a higher risk of hyperuricemia.Xanthine oxidase inhibition (reduce uric acid production), Nrf2 activation, and urate transporters regulation (increase uric acid excretion) are the potential molecular targets of anti-hyperuricemic effect of tea.About 5 g tea intake per day may be beneficial for hyperuricemia prevention.

Abstract
Background Accumulating evidence suggests sleep duration may be involved in metabolic regulation. However, studies regarding the association with the early stage of the metabolic disease are limited, and the findings were inconsistent. Methods A study among 4922 asymptomatic adults was conducted based on a Chinese national survey in 2009. The early stage of metabolic diseases was evaluated using three proxies: triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-C), the product of triglyceride and fasting glucose (TyG), and lipid accumulation product (LAP). Multivariable linear and logistic regression models were used to explore the associations of sleep duration with the three indicators. Results The linear regression models revealed that, among females, sleep duration <7 h per day, compared with 7-9 h, was associated with an increased value of LAP and TyG by 25.232% (95%CI: 10.738%, 41.623%) and 0.104 (95%CI: 0.024, 0.185), respectively, in the crude model. The effects were attenuated but remained significant for LAP (11.405%; 95%CI: 1.613%, 22.262%). Similarly, the logistic regression models further found that sleep duration <7 h per day could increase the risk of elevated LAP (OR: 1.725, 95CI%:1.042, 2.856) after adjusting for multiple covariates. By contrast, no associations were found among males. Conclusions Short sleep duration was associated with subclinical indicators of metabolic diseases, and females were more susceptible to the association. Abstract
Background and Objectives: A growing number of studies correlated higher levels of serum uric acid (UA) with both: lower risk of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) occurrence and slower progression of the disease. Similar conclusions were made where studies correlated UA with atypical Parkinsonisms (AP) progression. A few researchers have studied the issue of the influence of serum UA on the occurrence of non-motor symptoms (NMS) in PD and AP. Our systematic review is the first review completely dedicated to this matter. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive evaluation of the literature was performed to review the relationship between UA and NMS in PD and AP. The systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA Statement guidelines. The following databases were searched starting in April 2021: MEDLINE via PubMed, Embase, and Scopus. During the research, the following filters were used: >2010, articles in English, concerning humans. The study was not registered and received no external funding. Results: Seven articles meeting all inclusion criteria were included in this study. Collectively, data on 1104 patients were analyzed. A correlation between serum UA concentration and a few NMS types has been provided by the analyzed studies. In four papers, sleep disorders and fatigue were related to UA for both advanced and early PD. Other commonly appearing NMS domains were Attention/memory (4 studies), Depression/anxiety (3 studies), Cardiovascular (3 studies), Gastrointestinal (1 study), Perceptual (1 study), and Miscellaneous (1 study). For AP, no significant correlation between UA and worsening of NMS has been found. Conclusions: Based on the analyzed studies, a correlation between serum UA level and the occurrence and worsening of NMS in PD and APs cannot be definitively determined. Large-scale studies with a more diverse patient population and with more accurate methods of NMS assessment in Parkinsonism are needed.
