Molecular identification of keratinophilic fungi associated with hair scalp and antifungal activity of green-synthesis zinc oxide nanoparticles

A diverse population of fungi colonizes human hair and skin due to millions of years of functional integration and mutual adaptation. The human body, with its fungal communities, forms a complex entity. Microbial imbalance is promoted by instabilities in the host-mycobiota interaction system, which can be related to the development of various diseases. By morphological and molecular identification, 15 genera comprising 24 species were isolated from 18 scalp samples collected from girls. Yeast-like structures were the most common species in this study; they were recovered from six samples (33.3%). They were represented by five species: Arachniotus ruber; Cosmospora aurantiicola; Cutaneotrichosporon oleaginosum; Geotrichum candidum and Suhomyces tanzawaensis. For the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), an aqueous extract of Zingiber officinale was utilized as a reducing and capping agent. The prepared NPs tested by X-ray diffraction, they had a hexagonal wurtzite structure. Most of the ZnO NPs were spherical, and their diameter was about 38.9 nm using a transmission electron microscope. ZnO NPs of the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectra were recorded in the range of 400-4000 cm-1. UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy showed the 200-800 nm wavelength range. ZnO NPs showed the highest activity against Ambrosiella hartigii Ambh2; Cladosporium cladosporioides Cladcl12; C. cf. cucumerinum Cladcu13; S. tanzawaensis Suht34, with minimal inhibitory concentrations 1.25 × 103 µg/mL on the four isolates.

Emerging aspects of metal ions-doped zinc oxide photocatalysts in degradation of organic dyes and pharmaceutical pollutants - A review

In recent periods, a broad assortment of continual organic contaminants has been released into our natural water resources. Indeed, it is exceedingly poisonous and perilous to living things; thus, the elimination of these organic pollutants before release into the water bodies is vital. A variety of techniques have been utilized to remove these organic pollutants with advanced oxidation photocatalytic methods with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles being commonly used as a capable catalyst for contaminated water treatment. Nevertheless, its broad energy gap, which can be only stimulated under an ultraviolet (UV) light source, and high recombination pairs of electrons and holes limit their photocatalytic behaviors. However, numerous methods have been suggested to decrease its energy gap for visible regions. Including, the doping ZnO with metal ions (dopant) can be considered as an effectual route not only the reason for a movement of the absorption edges toward the higher (visible light) region but also to lower the electron-hole pair (e--h+) recombination. This review concentrated on the impact of dissimilar types of metal ions (dopants) on the advancement in the degradation performance of ZnO. So, this work demonstrates a vital review of contemporary attainments in the alteration of ZnO nanoparticles for organic pollutants eliminations. Besides, the effect of doping ions including transition metals, rare earth metals, and metal ions (substitutional and interstitial) concerning numerous types of altered ZnO are summarized. The photodegradation mechanisms for pristine and metal-modified ZnO nanoparticles are also conferred.

Enhanced alpha-amylase inhibition activity of amine-terminated PAMAM dendrimer stabilized pure copper-doped magnesium oxide nanoparticles

The present work aims to prepare copper-doped MgO nanoparticles via a sol-gel approach and study their antidiabetic alpha-amylase inhibition activity with undoped MgO nanoparticles. The ability of G5 amine-terminated polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer for the controlled release of copper-doped MgO nanoparticles to exhibit alpha-amylase inhibition activity was also evaluated. The synthesis of MgO nanoparticles via sol-gel approach and optimization of calcination temperature and time has led to the formation of nanoparticles with different shapes (spherical, hexagonal, and rod-shaped) and a polydispersity in size ranging from 10 to 100 nm with periclase crystalline phase. The presence of copper ions in the MgO nanoparticles has altered their crystallite size, eventually modifying their size, morphology, and surface charge. The efficiency of dendrimer to stabilize spherical copper-doped MgO nanoparticles (ca. 30 %) is higher than in other samples, which was confirmed by UV-Visible, DLS, FTIR, and TEM analysis. The amylase inhibition assay emphasized that the dendrimer nanoparticles stabilization has led to the prolonged enzyme inhibition ability of MgO and copper-doped MgO nanoparticles for up to 24 h.

Photoelectrocatalytic Detection and Degradation Studies of a Hazardous Textile Dye Safranin T

Herein, we report an electrochemical scaffold consisting of functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (COOH-fMWCNTs) and iron-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (Fe-ZnO) for the detection of a hazardous textile dye safranin T (ST) and monitoring of its photocatalytic degradation. Prior to the detection and degradation analysis, Fe-ZnO NPs were synthesized by the sol-gel method and characterized by a number of structural and morphological techniques. The carboxyl moiety of COOH-fMWCNTs possessing a strong affinity for the amino functionality of ST led to significant enhancement of the current response at the designed electrochemical platform, whereas the electrocatalytic role, surface area enhancement, and the provision of binding sites of Fe-ZnO led to a further increase in the peak current intensity of ST. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that the sensing scaffold made of the glassy carbon electrode modified with COOH-fMWCNTs and Fe-ZnO efficiently transfers charge between the transducer and the redox probe. Under optimized conditions, the developed sensor showed a 2.3 nM limit of detection for ST. Moreover, recovery experiments and anti-interference tests qualified the sensing platform for practical applications. The dye was photocatalytically degraded using Fe-ZnO NPs up to 99% in 60 min with a rate constant of 0.068 min-1. The designed sensor was used to probe the degradation kinetics of the target dye, and the results were found consistent with the findings obtained from electronic absorption method. To the best of our knowledge, the present work is the first approach for the efficient detection and almost absolute degradation of ST.

Incorporation of Ag-doped ZnO nanorod through Graphite hybridization: Effective approach for degradation of Ciprofloxacin

To remove the Ciprofloxacin (CIP) from aqueous solution, ZnO-Ag-Gp nanocomposite exhibited efficient photocatalytic properties. The biopersistent CIP is pervasive in surface water and also hazardous to human and animal health. This study utilized the hydrothermal technique to prepare Ag-doped ZnO hybridizing Graphite (Gp) sheet (ZnO-Ag-Gp) to degrade pharmaceuticals pollutant CIP from an aqueous medium. The structural and chemical compositions of the photocatalysts were determined by XRD, FTIR and XPS analysis. FESEM and TEM images revealed the nanorod ZnO with round shape Ag distributed on a Gp surface. The reduced bandgap of the ZnO-Ag-Gp sample enhanced the photocatalytic property which was measured by using UV-vis Spectroscopy. Dose optimization study found that 1.2 g/L is optimum for single (ZnO) and binary (ZnO-Gp and ZnO-Ag), where 0.3 g/L ternary (ZnO-Ag-Gp) exhibited maximum degradation efficiency (98%) within 60 min for 5 mg/L CIP. Pseudo 1st order reaction kinetics rate was found highest for ZnO-Ag-Gp (0.05983 min^-1) and it decreased to 0.03428 min^-1 for annealed sample. Removal efficiency decreased to only 90.97% at 5th run and hydroxyl radicals played a vital role to degrade CIP from aqueous solution. UV/ZnO-Ag-Gp will be a promising technique to degrade wide-ranging pharmaceutical antibiotics from the aquatic medium.

Simultaneous removal of Cu (II) and Cr (VI) ions from petroleum refinery wastewater using ZnO/Fe3O4 nanocomposite

The presence and removal of heavy metals such as Cu(II) as well as Cr(VI) in petroleum refinery wastewater calls for concerted efforts due to their mobility, toxicity, bioaccumulation, and non-biodegradability in the environment. In this present work, zinc oxide (ZnO), iron oxide (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles and ZnO/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites were synthesized via simple sol-gel and chemical reduction methods; characterized using different analytical tools and then applied as nanoadsorbent to sequester Cu(II) and Cr(VI) ions from Petroleum Refinery wastewater via batch adsorption process. Cu(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption processes were examined with respect to contact time (kinetic effect), nanoadsorbent dosage, isotherm equilibrium, and thermodynamic parameters. ZnO/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites with higher surface area (39.450 m²/g) have a mixture of rod-like and spherical shapes as compared to ZnO and Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles with spherical shape only and surface areas of 8.62 m²/g and 7.86 m²/g) according to the high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD) results revealed the formation of hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO and the face-centered cubic structure phase of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, after the formation of the ZnO/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites the phases of the nanoparticles were not affected but the diffraction peaks shifted to higher 2θ degree. The average crystallite size of ZnO and Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and ZnO/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites were 20.12, 26.36 and 14.50 nm respectively. The maximum removal efficiency of Cu (II) (92.99%) and Cr (VI) (77.60%) by ZnO/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites was higher than 85.83%; 65.19% for Cu (II) and 80.57%; 62.53 for Cr (VI) using ZnO and Fe₃O₄ nanoadsorbents individually under the following conditions: contact time (15), dosage (0.08 g) and temperature (30 °C). The experimental data for Cu (II) and Cr (VI) ion removal fitted well to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The thermodynamic study suggested that the removal of the two metal ions from petroleum wastewater was endothermic. The reusability study after the fourth adsorption-desorption cycle indicated the stability of ZnO/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites with 85.51% and 69.42% removal efficiency of Cu (II) and Cr (VI). The results showed that ZnO/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposite achieves higher performance than ZnO and Fe₃O₄ alone in the removal of Cu (II) and Cr (VI) ions from the petroleum refinery wastewater.

Aloe Vera coated Dextran Sulfate/Chitosan nanoparticles (Aloe Vera @ DS/CS) encapsulating Eucalyptus essential oil with antibacterial potent property

The goal of this work is to encapsulate Eucalyptus staigeriana essential oil in biopolymer matrices, to optimize the biological effects and the antibacterial properties of this oil. In this study, Eucalyptus extract was encapsulated in Aloe Vera coated Dextran Sulfate/Chitosan nanoparticles to form a hydrogel with potent properties. In this study, Eucalyptus extract was loaded on to Aloe Vera coated Dextran Sulphate/Chitosan nanoparticles to obtain a nano-hydrogel with potent properties. The characterization of nanoparticles was evaluated using transmission and scanning electron microscopes, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and antibacterial activity. The E. staigeriana release profile from the prepared nanoparticles was studied in vitro at a pH of 7.4. The results showed that this nano-carrier controls Eucalyptus release. Aloe Vera coated Dextran Sulfate/Chitosan nanoparticles encapsulated with E. staigeriana inhibited the bacteria by 47.27%. These investigations concluded that E. staigeriana loaded Aloe Vera coated Dextran Sulfate/Chitosan hydrogel could be used as a powerful dressing material to accelerate wound healing.

Development of Ag-Doped ZnO Thin Films and Thermoluminescence (TLD) Characteristics for Radiation Technology

This work examined the thermoluminescence dosimetry characteristics of Ag-doped ZnO thin films. The hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize Ag-doped ZnO thin films with variant molarity of Ag (0, 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0 mol%). The structure, morphology, and optical characteristics were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), photoluminescence (PL), and UV-vis spectrophotometers. The thermoluminescence characteristics were examined by exposing the samples to X-ray radiation. It was obtained that the highest TL intensity for Ag-doped ZnO thin films appeared to correspond to 0.5 mol% of Ag, when the films were exposed to X-ray radiation. The results further showed that the glow curve has a single peak at 240-325 °C, with its maximum at 270 °C, which corresponded to the heating rate of 5 °C/s. The results of the annealing procedures showed the best TL response was found at 400 °C and 30 min. The dose-response revealed a good linear up to 4 Gy. The proposed sensitivity was 1.8 times higher than the TLD 100 chips. The thermal fading was recorded at 8% for 1 Gy and 20% for 4 Gy in the first hour. After 45 days of irradiation, the signal loss was recorded at 32% and 40% for the cases of 1 Gy and 4 Gy, respectively. The obtained optical fading results confirmed that all samples' stored signals were affected by the exposure to sunlight, which decreased up to 70% after 6 h. This new dosimeter exhibits good properties for radiation measurement, given its overgrowth (in terms of the glow curve) within 30 s (similar to the TLD 100 case), simple annealing procedure, and high sensitivity (two times that of the TLD 100).

Remarkable sunlight-driven photocatalytic performance of Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles prepared by green synthesis for degradation of emerging pollutants in water

In this work, Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by a simple green method using a toxic agent-free route for photocatalytic purposes, toward methylene blue (MB) removal in water under sunlight irradiation. The effects of operating parameters, such as catalyst dosage, dye concentration, and pH, on the MB removal efficiency, were investigated. The presence of Ag on the ZnO structure resulted in superior catalytic activity compared to the pure ZnO sample. High removal efficiency for MB, corresponding to 95%, was obtained in 30 min of reaction time only, using Ag-doped ZnO NPs. This result can be related to its smaller bandgap energy (1.92 eV) when compared to the ZnO sample (2.85 eV). The material presented a satisfactory level of reusability after three consecutive cycles. In addition, a reaction mechanism for MB photodegradation onto Ag-doped ZnO NPs under sunlight irradiation was suggested. Overall, the catalyst prepared via the green route in this work exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity under sunlight for MB degradation in an aqueous solution.

Insights into ZnO-based doped porous nanocrystal frameworks

Colloidal nanocrystals play a vital role in several applications. The doping of cations in the nanocrystal matrix enhances the optical, electrical, and magnetic properties. The number and well-defined distribution of the dopant are crucial to protect the nanocrystal from clustering. The XRD, XPS, and XAS instruments reveal the change in the lattice parameters, chemical states, and local coordination environment information. In addition of detecting the position and distribution of the dopant, the 4D-STEM detector mode gathers all types of real-space atomic-resolution images by collecting all diffraction datasets from each electron probe with high-speed and efficient detection. Dopant-host ligand type, reactions conditions, and reaction time optimization during synthesis are critical for the host and dopant reactivity balance. Pearson's hard/soft acids/bases theory would be a base for balancing the solubility of the dopant-host in the given solvents/surfactant. In addition, tuning the colloidal nanocrystals to secondary structures, which enhances the mass-/ions transport, can contribute a combination of properties that do not exist in the original constituents.

Biosynthesis, characterisation and antimicrobial activity of zinc oxide and nickel doped zinc oxide nanoparticles using Euphorbia abyssinica bark extract

Biosynthesis of metallic oxide nanoparticles is being used and preferred over physical and chemical methods of synthesis since it is simple, inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and green. The aim of this study was to synthesise ZnO and nickel doped ZnO nanoparticles using Euphorbia abyssinica bark extract for antimicrobial activity studies via agar disk diffusion method against some selected microbes. The synthesised nanoparticles were characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The study results revealed that the biosynthesised nanoparticles had good crystalline nature, with crystal sizes in the range of nanoparticles and structures of hexagonal wurtzite. Both undoped ZnO and nickel doped ZnO nanoparticles demonstrated antibacterial and antifungal activity against four bacterial strains and two fungal genus. Generally, nickel doped ZnO NPs were found to possess more antimicrobial activities than undoped ZnO NPs. Specially, 4% and 5% nickel doped ZnO NPs showed significantly enhanced activity against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Aspergillus and Fusarium.

Cr2S3(Et2DTC) complex and [Cr2S3-MoS2(Et2DTC)] bilayer thin films: single source stationed fabrication, compositional, optical, microstructural and electrochemical investigation

Current investigation has for the first time synthesized chromium sulphide diethyldithiocarbamate [Cr₂S₃(Et₂DTC)] complex utilizing diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) utilizing single source precursor method. Thin films of bilayer chromium sulphide diethyldithiocarmate and molybdenum disulphide [Cr₂S₃-MoS₂(Et₂DTC)] were deposited on the fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate by physical vapour deposition (PVD). Synthesized complex and bilayer were characterized by Xray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for exploration of the compositional, optical, crystalline and morphological parameters, respectively. FT-IR peaks expressed the chelation of [Cr₂S₃(Et₂DTC)] expressing interactions between chromium sulphide and the ligand. The band gaps obtained from Tauc plot were 3.89 (direct) and 3.38 eV (indirect), respectively for Cr₂S₃(Et₂DTC) complex. The direct and indirect band gap of 3.75 and 3.35 eV, respectively, were obtained for [Cr₂S₃-MoS₂(Et₂DTC)] bilayer thin films. Average crystallite size of 13 (hexagonal orientation) and 13.4 (orthorhombic orientation) nm and for Cr₂S₃(Et₂DTC) complex and [Cr₂S₃-MoS₂(Et₂DTC)] bilayer thin films expressed from XRD. SEM micrographs expressed cannular and rod protrusions for Cr₂S₃-DDTC complex and smoother and unvarnished surficial characteristics for [Cr₂S₃-MoS₂(Et₂DTC)] bilayer thin films corresponding to compactness and uniformity of the films. Furthermore, [Cr₂S₃-MoS₂(Et₂DTC)] also expressed remarkable electrochemical aspects of the current generation and operational stability of analysed through 5760 s at 100 mA analysed via linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The fabricated films can be efficiently used in optoelectronic devices. Current work can be extended to the optimization of bilayer thin films fabrication for achieving an alleviation in the band gaps.

Sustainability consolidation via employment of biomimetic ecomaterials with an accentuated photo-catalytic potential: emerging progressions

Environmental pollution produced due to direct and untreated release of toxic organic pollutants such as dyes from the textile industries is not only effect the human life but also contaminates the ecosystem through different transferal modes. Green nanomaterials synthesized by using biological reducing agents offer sustainable, economically viable, facile, rapid and eco-friendly approach with photocatalytic degradation efficiencies >90% for organic dyes over the other traditional technologies. Current review has for the first time comprehensively abridged the suitability of green nanoparticles over chemogenic nanoparticles, the remediative role of these biogenic nanoparticles with major emphasis on the recent progressions in the photocatalysis of different toxic dyes and pollutants. Unlike physicochemically processed nanoparticles, biogenic nanoparticles has profound contribution to the sustainable development goals due to their cleaner and economical synthesis in addition to their detoxifying role. Meticulous review of the publications are strongly suggestive of the adoptability of biogenic nanoparticles at an implementation scale for their auspicious remediative role in addition to facile fabrication, natural reducing agents based synthetic mode, toxicity free and sustainable nature. However, the studies are also indicative of the need for utilization of biogenic synthesis at practical scale to derive maximum sustainability and ecological benefits.

Facile Synthesis of Silver-Doped Zinc Oxide Nanostructures as Efficient Scaffolds for Detection of p-Nitrophenol

In this paper, silver-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by using a solution combustion technique, in which zinc nitrate is used as an oxidizer and tartaric acid as a fuel. The phase composition, morphology and structural properties of the as-synthesized zinc oxide and silver-doped zinc oxide were established by using powdered X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies. Due to well-defined morphologies and crystallinity, the pure zinc oxide and silver-doped zinc oxide nanostructures can be used as efficient chemical sensors for the detection of p-nitrophenol (PNP). ZnO was found to show a low value of the limit of detection (LOD), i.e., 2.175 µM/L, for p-nitrophenol sensing; moreover, a sharp decrease in the limit of detection was observed with an increase in the concentration of silver ions, and the LOD value decreased to 0.669 µM/L for 10 mol % silver-doped zinc oxide. It is therefore concluded that Ag-doped ZnO shows a lower limit of detection as compared to pure ZnO for p-nitrophenol sensing.

Performant Composite Materials Based on Oxide Semiconductors and Metallic Nanoparticles Generated from Cloves and Mandarin Peel Extracts

In this work, the metal and semiconducting nanoparticles (AgNPs, ZnONPs and AgZnONPs) were phyto-synthesized using aqueous vegetal extracts from: Caryophyllus aromaticus L. (cloves) and Citrus reticulata L. (mandarin) peels. The morphological, structural, compositional, optical and biological properties (antibacterial activity, and cytotoxicity) of the prepared composites were investigated. The most effective sample proved to be AgZnONPs, derived from cloves, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 0.11 mg/mL and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) value of 2.68 mg/mL. All the other three composites inhibited bacterial growth at a concentration between 0.25 mg/mL and 0.37 mg/mL, with a bactericidal concentration between 3 mg/mL and 4 mg/mL. The obtained composites presented biocidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus, and biocompatibility (on human fibroblast BJ cells) and did not damage the human red blood cells. Additionally, an important result is that the presence of silver in composite materials improved the bactericidal action of these nanomaterials against the most common nosocomial pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus.

Innovatory role of nanomaterials as bio-tools for treatment of cancer

Conventional treatment modes like chemotherapy, thermal and radiations aimed at cancerous cells eradication are marked by destruction pointing the employment of nanomaterials as sustainable and auspicious materials for saving human lives. Cancer has been deemed as the second leading cause of death on a global scale. Nanomaterials employment in cancer treatment is based on the utilization of their inherent physicochemical characteristics in addition to their modification for using as nano-carriers and nano-vehicles eluted with anti-cancer drugs. Current work has reviewed the significant role of different types of nanomaterials in cancer therapeutics and diagnostics in a systematic way. Compilation of review has been done by analyzing voluminous investigations employing ERIC, MEDLINE, NHS Evidence and Web of Science databases. Search engines used were Google scholar, Jstore and PubMed. Current review is suggestive of the remarkable performance of nanomaterials making them candidates for cancer treatment for substitution of destructive treatment modes through investigation of their physicochemical characteristics, utilization outputs and long term impacts in patients.

Phyto-inspired and scalable approach for the synthesis of PdO-2Mn2O3: a nano-material for application in water splitting electro-catalysis

A modified co-precipitation method has been used for the synthesis of a PdO-2Mn₂O₃ nanocomposite as an efficient electrode material for the electro-catalytic oxygen evolution (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Palladium acetate and manganese acetate in molar ratio 1 : 4 were dissolved in water, and 10 ml of an aqueous solution of phyto-compounds was slowly added until completion of precipitation. The filtered and dried precipitates were then calcined at 450 °C to obtain a blackish brown colored mixture of PdO-2Mn₂O₃ nanocomposite. These particles were analyzed by ultra violet visible spectrophotometry (UV-vis), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for crystallinity, optical properties, and compositional and morphological makeup. Using Tauc's plot, the direct band gap (3.18 eV) was calculated from the absorption spectra. The average crystallite sizes, as calculated from the XRD, were found to be 15 and 14.55 nm for PdO and Mn₂O₃, respectively. A slurry of the phyto-fabricated PdO-2Mn₂O₃ powder was deposited on Ni-foam and tested for electro-catalytic water splitting studies in 1 M KOH solution. The electrode showed excellent OER and HER performance with low over-potential (0.35 V and 121 mV) and Tafel slopes of 115 mV dec^-1 and 219 mV dec^-1, respectively. The outcomes obtained from this study provide a direction for the fabrication of a cost-effective mixed metal oxide based electro-catalyst via an environmentally benign synthesis approach for the generation of clean energy.

Congruously designed eco-curative integrated farming model designing and employment for sustainable encompassments

Eco-degradative features associated with the modern agriculture due to utilization of toxic agro-chemicals and intensified technologies need an urgent attention. Considering this need for eco-curativeness and eco-efficiency, current has for the first time employed an integrated farming system (IFS) through designing an appropriate assemblage of vegetables, poultry, and fish (VPF) and investigated its applied scale practicability in addition to the its role in the enhancement of the productivity and environmental quality maintenance. The practical employment of VPF model resulted in the remarkable improvement of soil fertility through an increment in the essential nutrient quantity. Physicochemical analysis of the soils expressed an improvement in the treated samples, i.e., pH (7.31), EC (0.92 dS/m), organic matter (2.97%), nitrogen (2.1 mg/kg), phosphorous (120.3 mg/kg), potassium (322 mg/kg), calcium (1482.0 mg/kg), and magnesium (471.5 mg/kg). Furthermore, ecological detoxification was expressed in form of lower heavy metals (HM) in the experimental soils. At the early plantation stage, HM concentration in the soils modified with nutrient-rich water signified considerably lower pattern with trend, i.e., Cd < Zn < Ni <Pb< Cu < Fe. The morphological growth of the vegetable plants, i.e., Lycopersicon esculentum L., Capsicum annum, and Abelmoschus esculentus, and fish species, i.e., Lobeo rohita and Clarias gariepinus, in the current investigation was remarkably good. Currently employed VPF model expressed a duality in completion of sustainability goals through production of good-quality vegetables in addition to environmental integrity boosting by complete elimination of need for toxic chemical inputs. Results of this research can be adopted for large-scale employment for production of augmented agricultural production in a completely sustainable manner.

Organic template-based ZnO embedded Mn3O4 nanoparticles: synthesis and evaluation of their electrochemical properties towards clean energy generation

To deal with fossil fuel depletion and the rise in global temperatures caused by fossil fuels, cheap and abundant materials are required, in order to fulfill energy demand by developing high-performance fuel cells and electrocatalysts. In this work, a natural organic agent has been used to synthesize nano-structured ZnO/Mn₃O₄ with high surface area and enhanced electrocatalytic performance. Upon pre-annealing treatment, mixed metal oxide precipitates are formed due to the complex formation between a metal oxide and organic extract. The thermally annealed mixed oxide ZnO/Mn₃O₄ was characterized by XRD diffractometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified methyldecylamine as a major stabilizing agent of the synthesized nanomaterial. Using a Tauc plot, the calculated band energy for the synthesized ZnO/Mn₃O₄ mixed metal oxide was 1.65 eV. Moreover, we have demonstrated the effects of incorporated organic compounds on the surface chemistry, morphology and electrochemical behavior of ZnO/Mn₃O₄. The phyto-functionalized ZnO/Mn₃O₄ was deposited on Ni-foam for electrocatalytic studies. The fabricated electrode revealed good performance with low over-potential and Tafel slope, suggesting it to be suitable as a potential catalyst for water splitting application, in particular for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The overall findings of the current study provide a cost-effective and efficient organic template for functionalization and sustainable fabrication of ZnO/Mn₃O₄ nanomaterial for application as an electrocatalyst.

Biomimetic detoxifier Prunus cerasifera Ehrh. silver nanoparticles: innate green bullets for morbific pathogens and persistent pollutants

Silver nanoparticles were fabricated in the presence and absence of light with silver nitrate and aqueous extract of Prunus cerasifera leaf via facile and one-pot green method. P. cerasifera leaf extract reduced and stabilized the nanoparticles with phytometabolites expunging the need for addition of external reducing agents. Optimized silver nanoparticle syntheses was done with variations in leaf extract concentration, time, temperature, and molarity for deciphering the photocatalytic, antifungal, and antibacterial potential of synthesized nanoparticles. Optical, compositional, and morphological analyses of the synthesized nanoparticles were done by UV-visible spectrometry (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Formation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed firstly through UV-Vis by exhibition of peaks with 400-450 nm. FTIR confirmed the presence of major organic groups responsible for reduction of nanoparticles. AFM confirmed the spherical morphology of the synthesized nanoparticles with remarkable dispersion without any agglomeration. Phytochemical analysis for P. cerasifera leaf metabolites was done by GC-MS. Spherical nanoparticles having a size range of 57-144 nm were obtained with face-centered cubic crystals. The average crystallite size obtained from XRD spectra was 2.34 nm. Enhanced photocatalytic first-order kinetics were obtained for persistent organic pollutants, i.e., crystal violet, methylene blue, and malachite green (R² = 0.99, 0.99, 0.98) in less than 15 min. Biomedical and agricultural significance as an antibiotic drug and utilization as a fungicides substitute was explored against nine resistant microbes. Statistically significant variations were analyzed via one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Kruskal-Wallis test and specific multi comparison tests. Active to highly active inhibition zones manifested the use of biogenic silver nanoparticles as potential candidate for applications in biological arenas and as environmental remediators.

Carpogenic ZnO nanoparticles: amplified nanophotocatalytic and antimicrobial action

This investigation has for the first time utilised environmental resource Prunus cerasifera seed extract phytochemicals for the green synthesis of carpogenic ZnO nanoparticles (NPs). Spherical morphology and size range of 56.57-107.70 nm at variable calcination temperatures without the use of any external reducing agent was obtained. The synthesised NPs exhibited hexagonal wurtzite geometry with an average crystal size 5.62 nm and a band gap of 3.4 eV. Carpogenic NPs were investigated for optical, compositional, morphological, and phytochemical make up via ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Carpogenic NPs degraded methyl red up to 83% with pseudo-first-order degradation kinetics (R2 = 0.88) in 18 min signifying their remediation role in environment in conformity with all principles of green chemistry. Photocatalytic assays were performed in direct solar irradiance. Nine pathogens of biomedical and agricultural significance having multi-drug resistance were inhibited in vitro via the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion assay. The enhanced photocatalytic and antimicrobial inhibition not only makes carpogenic ZnO NPs a future photo-degradative candidate for environmental remediation but also a nanofertiliser, nanofungicide, and nanobactericide synthesised via bioinspired, biomimetic, green, and unprecedented route.
