EDTA functionalized pine needle biochar (EDTA@BC); a valorized bio-material for removal of Ni(II) from aqueous solution

The preparation of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) functionalized pine needles biochar (EDTA@BC) as a low-cost active adsorbent and its effectiveness in removing Ni(II) from aqueous solution at various conditions is reported in this paper. First, alkali activation was selected to render the pine needle biochar with an excellent porous structure and increased concentration of hydroxyl groups to facilitate grafting. Subsequently, a simple method was utilized to graft EDTA onto the biochar. The prepared EDTA@BC was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDX). Batch adsorption studies were conducted to assess the impact of various parameters such as solution pH, adsorbent dosage, adsorbate volume, and shaking time on the removal efficiency of Ni(II). At pH 6, 100 mg dosage, 4 mL of adsorbate volume, and 10 min of shaking time, the maximum removal efficiency of Ni(II) was observed to be 89%. EDTA@BC showed reasonable sorption performance still after the third cycle of regeneration. The effect of interfering ions such as Pb, Cr, Cu, and Hg was evaluated, resulting a decrease of 69%, 78%, 76%, and 68%, respectively, in its sorption capacity. The Langmuir model provided a better fit for Ni(II) in the concentration range of 0.1-2000 ppm under optimized conditions, with qmax of 46.69 ± 1.031 mg/g and KL of 0.001, compared with the Freundlich isotherm, which yielded n = 0.234 and χ2 = 2.7899, Temkin isotherm (R2 = 0.9520), and Redlich-Peterson isotherm (R2 = 0.9725). The removal of Ni(II) by EDTA@BC was found to be the pseudo-second-order kinetics. Thermodynamic studies indicated adsorption process to be endothermic and nonspontaneous. Hence, a sustainable valorized bio-material (EDTA@BC) is prepared having better sorption efficiency of Ni(II) from aqueous solution with possible wide applicability. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: New EDTA functionalized indigenous pine needles biochar (EDTA@BC) was prepared. This low-cost active adsorbent found effective in removing Ni(II) from aqueous solution. FTIR, SEM, and EDX proved synthesis and uptake of Ni(II) from aqueous solution. Ni(II) removal, regeneration, interfering and adsorption studies were performed by UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Improving rhamnolipids production using fermentation-foam fractionation coupling system: cell immobilization and waste frying oil emulsion

This work focused on the development of an inexpensive carbon source and the improvement of the fermentation-foam fractionation coupling system. The rhamnolipids production capacity of waste frying oil (WFO) was evaluated. The suitable bacterial cultivation of seed liquid and the addition amount of WFO was 16 h and 2% (v/v), respectively. A combined strategy of cell immobilization and oil emulsion avoid cell entrainment inside foam and improves the oil mass transfer rate. The immobilization conditions of bacterial cells into alginate-chitosan-alginate (ACA) microcapsules were optimized using the response surface method (RSM). Under the optimal conditions, rhamnolipids production using batch fermentation with immobilized strain reached 7.18 ± 0.23% g/L. WFO was emulsified into a fermentation medium using rhamnolipids as emulsifier (0.5 g/L). By monitoring dissolved oxygen, 30 mL/min was selected as a suitable air volumetric flow rate for fermentation-foam fractionation coupling operation. The total production and recovery percentage of rhamnolipids were 11.29 ± 0.36 g/L and 95.62 ± 0.38%, respectively.

Hybrid biomaterials to preconcentrate and determine toxic metals and metalloids: a review

Toxic elements represent a serious threat to the environment and cause harmful effects on different environmental components, even at trace levels. These toxic elements are often difficult to detect through the typical instrumentation of an analytical laboratory because they are found at very low concentrations in matrices such as food and water. Therefore, preconcentration plays a fundamental role since it allows the effects of the matrix to be minimized, thus reaching lower detection limits and greater sensitivity of detection techniques. In recent years, solid-phase extraction has been successfully used for the preconcentration of metals as an environmentally friendly technique due to the fact that it eliminates or minimizes the use of reagents and solvents and offers reduced analysis times and low generation of waste in the laboratory. Hybrid biomaterials are low-cost, eco-friendly, and useful as efficient solid phases for the preconcentration of elements. In this review, recent investigations based on the use of hybrid biomaterials for the preconcentration and determination of toxic metals are presented and discussed, given special attention to bionanomaterials. A brief description of hybrid biomaterials often used for analytical purposes, as well as analytical techniques mostly used to characterize the hybrid biomaterials, is explained. Finally, the future prospects that encourage the search for new hybrid biomaterials are commented upon.

Production of Pigments under Submerged Culture through Repeated Batch Fermentation of Immobilized Talaromyces atroroseus GH2

Pigments of natural origin have become a research trend, and fungi provide a readily available alternative source. Moreover, developing novel processes that increase yields, reduce process time and simplify downstream processing is of increased interest. In this sense, this work proposes an alternative for Talaromyces atroroseus GH2 biomass re-utilization to produce pigments through consecutive batches using immobilized mycelium. Different support materials were evaluated for pigment production and immobilization capacity. Then, Taguchi’s method was applied to determine the effect of four factors related to fungal immobilization and pigment production (inoculum concentration, support density, working volume and support volume). Afterward, process kinetics for pigment production using immobilized cells of T. atroroseus GH2 in consecutive batches were evaluated. All evaluated factors were significant and affected pigment production and microorganism growth differently. At improved conditions, immobilization capacity reached 99.01 ± 0.37% and the pigment production was 30% higher than using free cells. Process kinetics showed that the production could continue for three batches and was limited by excessive microorganism growth. Indeed, more studies are still needed, but the immobilization of Talaromyces atroroseus GH2 represents a promising strategy for allowing downstream-processing intensification since immobilized biomass is easily removed from the fermentation media, thus paving the way for the further development of a continuous process.

Biosorption of heavy metals by microorganisms: Evaluation of different underlying mechanisms

Globally, ecotoxicologists, environmental biologists, biochemists, pathologists, and other experts are concerned about environmental contamination. Numerous pollutants, such as harmful heavy metals and emerging hazardous chemicals, are pervasive sources of water pollution. Water pollution and sustainable development have several eradication strategies proposed and used. Biosorption is a low-cost, easy-to-use, profitable, and efficient method of removing pollutants from water resources. Microorganisms are effective biosorbents, and their biosorption efficacy varies based on several aspects, such as ambient factors, sorbing materials, and metals to be removed. Microbial culture survival is also important. Biofilm agglomerates play an important function in metal uptake by extracellular polymeric molecules from water resources. This study investigates the occurrence of heavy metals, their removal by biosorption techniques, and the influence of variables such as those indicated above on biosorption performance. Ion exchange, complexation, precipitation, and physical adsorption are all components of biosorption. Between 20 and 35 °C is the optimal temperature range for biosorption efficiency from water resources. Utilizing living microorganisms that interact with the active functional groups found in the water contaminants might increase biosorption efficiency. This article discusses the negative impacts of microorganisms on living things and provides an outline of how they affect the elimination of heavy metals.

Changes of distribution and chemical speciation of metals in hexavalent chromium loaded algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge before and after hydrothermal treatment

Algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge (AGS) was applied for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) biosorption from wastewater and the dynamic distribution and mobility of different metals in granules were systematically examined before and after hydrothermal treatment. The loaded Cr on algal-bacterial AGS was found to mainly localize in microbial cells and mineral particles; little Cr was detected in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) after 6 h contact, which increased to 5.1% after 24 h biosorption. Along with Cr localization, 9.3-22.8% of Mg and 11.5-26.4% of Ca in algal-bacterial AGS were released from loosely bound EPS, then replenished to maintain their stable proportion in EPS, probably contributing to granular stability. In addition, chemical fractionation showed that the Cr mobility in algal-bacterial AGS, indicated by a low mobility factor of 4.7%, decreased to 1.4% with the co-existence of mineral salts and acetate during biosorption, which was further declined to 0 after hydrothermal treatment.

A meta-analysis of metal biosorption by suspended bacteria from three phyla

Biosorption of heavy metals by bacterial biomass has been the subject of significant research interest in last decades due to its efficiency, relatively low cost and minimal negative effects for the surrounding environment. In this meta-analysis, the biosorption efficiencies of different bacterial strains for Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Cr(III), Mn(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) were evaluated. Optimum conditions for the biosorption process such as initial metal concentration, temperature, pH, contact time, metal type, biomass dosage and bacterial phyla, were evaluated for each heavy metal. According to the results, the efficiencies of bacterial biomass for removal of heavy metal were as follows: Cd(II) > Cr(III) > Pb(II) > Zn(II) > Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Mn(II). Firmicute phyla showed the highest overall (living and dead) biosorption efficiency for heavy metals. Living biomass of Proteobacteria had the best biosorption performance. Living bacterial biomass was significantly more efficient in biosorption of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) than dead biomass. The maximum biosorption efficiency of bacterial strains for Cd(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) was achieved at pH values between 6 and 7.5. High temperatures (>35 °C) reduced the removal efficiencies for Cu(II) and Zn(II) and increased the efficiencies for Cd(II) and Cr(III) ions. The maximum biosorption efficiency of non-essential heavy metals occurred with short contact times (<2 h). Essential metals such as Zn and Cu were more efficiently removed with long biosorption durations (>24 h). The mean biosorption capacity of bacterial biomass was between 71.26 and 125.88 mg g^-1. No publication bias existed according to Egger's and Begg's test results.
