Structures and Dynamics of Complex Guest Molecules in Confinement, Revealed by Solid-State NMR, Molecular Dynamics, and Calorimetry

This review gives an overview of current trends in the investigation of confined molecules such as water, small and higher alcohols, carbonic acids, ethylene glycol, and non-ionic surfactants, such as polyethylene glycol or Triton-X, as guest molecules in neat and functionalized mesoporous silica materials employing solid-state NMR spectroscopy, supported by calorimetry and molecular dynamics simulations. The combination of steric interactions, hydrogen bonds, and hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions results in a fascinating phase behavior in the confinement. Combining solid-state NMR and relaxometry, DNP hyperpolarization, molecular dynamics simulations, and general physicochemical techniques, it is possible to monitor these confined molecules and gain deep insights into this phase behavior and the underlying molecular arrangements. In many cases, the competition between hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between polar and non-polar moieties of the guests and the host leads to the formation of ordered structures, despite the cramped surroundings inside the pores.

Low molecular weight sulfated chitosan isolation, characterization and anti-tuberculosis activity derived from Sepioteuthis lessoniana

The research focused on tuberculosis as it is one of the world's most serious health problems. The extracted chitin from the gladius of Sepioteuthis lessoniana converted into Chitosan (CH). The purified and freeze-dried CH was refined as Sulfated Chitosan (SCH). The SCH was converted into low molecular weight of SCH with various doses of Gamma Irradiation (GIR). Fluorescence characteristics of GIR-SCH and elemental analysis were confirmed. The structure and molecular weights of GIR-SCH were determined with FT-IR, NMR and MALDI-TOF/Mass Spectroscopy. 100 Gy of GIR-SCH significantly showed the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Mycobacterium smegmatis. The MIC against M. smegmatis was not affected by the varied sulfate levels in the identical molecular weight GIR-SCH. However, the lowest molecular weight GIR-SCH displayed a significantly MIC against M. smegmatis. In docking analysis, the 6ZT3 ligand had the lowest binding energy of -1.57 kcal/Mol indicating a superior binding interaction with GIR-SCH. The effect of molecular weight reduction by GIR on the anti-tuberculosis capacity of GIR SCH was investigated in this study which had antimicrobial implications.

Borate-driven ionic rectifiers based on sugar-bearing single nanochannels

Recently, much scientific effort has been centered on the control of the ionic transport properties of solid state nanochannels and the rational design and integration of chemical systems to induce changes in the ionic transport by means of interactions with selected target molecules. Here, we report the fabrication of a novel nanofluidic device based on solid-state nanochannels, which combines silane chemistry with both track-etched and atomic layer deposition (ALD) technologies. Nanodevice construction involves the coating of bullet-shaped single-pore nanochannels with silica (SiO₂) by ALD and subsequent surface modification by reaction between silanol groups exposed on pore walls and N-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)-gluconamide, in order to create a gluconamide-decorated nanochannel surface. The formation of a boroester derivative resulting from the selective reaction of borate with the appended saccharides leads to important changes in the surface charge density and, concomitantly, in the iontronic properties of the nanochannel. Furthermore, we propose a binding model to rationalize the specific interaction saccharide-borate in the surface. Besides, this unique nanodevice exhibits a highly selective and reversible response towards borate/fructose exposure. On the basis of the surface charge variation resulting from borate binding, the nanochannel can reversibly switch between "ON" and "OFF" states in the presence of borate and fructose, respectively. In addition, this work describes the first report of the functionalization of PET/SiO₂ nanochannels by the ALD technique. We believe that this work provides a promising framework for the development of new nanochannel-based platforms suitable for multiple applications, such as water quality monitoring or directed molecular transport and separation.

Small Molecules, Non-Covalent Interactions, and Confinement

This review gives an overview of current trends in the investigation of small guest molecules, confined in neat and functionalized mesoporous silica materials by a combination of solid-state NMR and relaxometry with other physico-chemical techniques. The reported guest molecules are water, small alcohols, and carbonic acids, small aromatic and heteroaromatic molecules, ionic liquids, and surfactants. They are taken as characteristic role-models, which are representatives for the typical classes of organic molecules. It is shown that this combination delivers unique insights into the structure, arrangement, dynamics, guest-host interactions, and the binding sites in these confined systems, and is probably the most powerful analytical technique to probe these systems.
