Abstract
Background Many patients with constipation also suffer from varying degrees of malnutrition, and the relationship between the two conditions is a vicious cycle. Surgery is the final step in the treatment of constipation, with a success rate of up to 95%. This study aims to investigate the effects of surgical treatment on the nutritional status of patients with chronic constipation and malnutrition. Methods A total of 60 patients with chronic constipation and various degrees of malnutrition who underwent surgery in our department from January 2020 to March 2023 were included in this study. Biochemical tests including BMI, albumin, total protein, hemoglobin, cholesterol and lymphocyte count were conducted, as well as measurements of inflammatory markers such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-8 (IL-8), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Additionally, multiple nutritional risk screening scales (NRS2002, MUST, NRI, and MNA) and the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) were used to assess the nutritional status of patients before surgery, as well as at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months post-surgery. Finally, we analyzed the factors influencing postoperative recovery outcomes in patients. Results Compared to pre-operation, the BMI of patients significantly increased at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after the operation, with statistically significant differences (p < 0.001). Multiple nutritional risk assessment tools (NRS2002, MUST, NRI, and MNA), as well as the prognostic nutritional index (NPI), indicated a reduction in nutritional risk and improvement in nutritional status at 1, 3, and 6 months post-surgery, compared to pre-surgery levels (p < 0.001). The levels of albumin, total protein, and hemoglobin in patients at 1, 3, and 6 months after the surgery were significantly higher than those before the surgery (p < 0.001). However, there was no significant change in the number of lymphocytes. Inflammatory markers such as IL-6, IL-8, and CRP exhibited a significant decrease after the surgery, reaching normal levels at 6 months post-surgery (p < 0.001). Low BMI, low PNI, and low cholesterol levels are independent risk factors for patient prognosis (p < 0.05). Conclusion Surgical treatment can enhance the nutritional status of constipation patients with malnutrition, which in turn promotes the restoration of intestinal motility. The patient's nutritional status will impact the postoperative recovery outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential relationship between sleep disturbances and various types of constipation in patients. METHODS We conducted systematic searches in the research databases PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library to identify qualifying studies. Using Stata software version 14.0, we calculated the Odds Ratio (OR) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) for constipation in patients with sleep disorders. If P > 0.1 and I2 ≤ 50 %, we employed a fixed-effects model; otherwise, we applied a random-effects model. We assessed publication bias using funnel plots and Egger's test. RESULT The pooled analysis demonstrated that individuals with sleep disorders were associated with an increased risk of all-cause constipation (OR = 1.47; 95 %CI: 1.31-1.64; I2 = 88.8 %, P<0.001). Specifically, both children (OR = 1.29; 95 %CI: 1.16-1.42; I2 = 63.8 %, P<0.001) and adults (OR = 1.65; 95 %CI: 1.39-1.97; I2 = 92.4 %, P<0.001) with a history of sleep disorders exhibited an increased risk of all-cause constipation.. Furthermore, patients with a history of insufficient sleep were also associated with an increased risk of constipation (OR = 1.33; 95 %CI: 1.20-1.46; I2 = 6.7 %, P<0.001). Additionally, patients with poor sleep quality were found to have an increased risk of constipation (OR = 1.56; 95 %CI: 1.0-2.45; I2 = 90.9 %, P = 0.05). Lastly, patients with insomnia were found to have the highest risk of constipation (OR = 1.94; 95 %CI: 1.37-2.76; I2 = 97.8 %, P<0.001). CONCLUSION This meta-analysis indicates that sleep disorders are associated with an elevated risk of constipation. Insomnia, poor sleep quality, and insufficient sleep duration all contribute to elevating the risk of constipation. These findings emphasize the significance of recognizing sleep disorders as an independent risk factor for constipation in both children and adults.

Abstract
Sargassum fusiforme and Sargassum fulvellum are types of brown algae used for their nutritional value and medicinal properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer effects. Despite their importance in various industries, many seaweed byproducts containing dietary fiber and polysaccharides are discarded in landfills. These byproducts can be recycled and repurposed for different applications. In this study, we investigated the impact of S. fusiforme food processing byproducts (MbP-SFF) and S. fulvellum food processing byproducts (MbP-SFV) on improving intestinal motility and reducing inflammation in mice with constipation induced by loperamide. To evaluate this, mice were orally administered 500 mg/kg/day of the byproducts once daily for 8 days. Constipation was induced by 5 mg/kg/day of loperamide for two days after oral administration for 6 days. Each sample contained approximately 70% carbohydrates. MbP-SFF had 52.0% mannuronic acid and 18.8% guluronic acid, while MbP-SFV had 36.9% mannuronic acid and 32.9% guluronic acid. These byproducts enhanced fecal excretion and intestinal motility by modulating inflammatory responses. Furthermore, they restored the balance of the gut microbiota disrupted by loperamide, increasing beneficial Bifidobacterium and reducing harmful Staphylococcus aureus. Overall, MbP-SFF and MbP-SFV improved intestinal motility and inflammation by influencing the gut microbiota and inflammatory responses in a loperamide-induced mouse model. These byproducts show potential as ingredients in functional foods aimed at enhancing gut health, potentially reducing waste disposal costs and addressing environmental concerns associated with their utilization.

Abstract
Constipation is a common gastrointestinal condition, which may occur at any age and affects countless people. The search for new treatments for constipation is ongoing as current drug treatments fail to provide fully satisfactory results. In recent years, probiotics have attracted much attention because of their demonstrated therapeutic efficacy and fewer side effects than pharmaceutical products. Many studies attempted to answer the question of how probiotics can alleviate constipation. It has been shown that different probiotic strains can alleviate constipation by different mechanisms. The mechanisms on probiotics in relieving constipation were associated with various aspects, including regulation of the gut microbiota composition, the level of short-chain fatty acids, aquaporin expression levels, neurotransmitters and hormone levels, inflammation, the intestinal environmental metabolic status, neurotrophic factor levels and the body's antioxidant levels. This paper summarizes the perception of the mechanisms on probiotics in relieving constipation and provides some suggestions on new research directions.

Abstract
Introduction Functional constipation (FC) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder in clinical practice, with the prevalence of which increasing with age. With the increasing aging of the population worldwide, this problem is bound to become more prominent. Acupuncture is effective and recommended for the treatment of FC. However, little is known about how acupuncture affects the gut microbiota and inflammatory cytokines and thus improves gut function. Meanwhile, there are few high-quality clinical trials specifically focusing on acupuncture in treating FC in older people. The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in treating FC in older people. Additionally, the research aims to explore the mechanism of action of acupuncture in treating FC in older people by affecting intestinal microbiota and inflammation cytokines. Methods and analysis This study is designed as a single-center, randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial. A total of 98 eligible FC patients will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio into an acupuncture group and a sham acupuncture group. Both groups will receive 24 treatments over 8 weeks with a 12-week follow-up. The primary outcome of the study is the treatment response rate, which is the proportion of participants with ≥3 mean weekly Complete Spontaneous Bowel Movements (CSBMs) over weeks 3-8. The secondary outcomes will include the proportion of participants with ≥3 mean weekly CSBMs during other assessment periods; the percentage of patients with ≥1 increase in mean weekly CSBMs from baseline; the average changes in CSBMs; Patient Assessment of Constipation-Symptoms (PAC-SYM), Bristol Stool Scale, Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAC-QOL), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) and weekly usage of emergency bowel medications. Adverse events will be recorded throughout the study. Data for the outcomes will be collected at Week 0 (baseline), Week 4 (the intervention period), Week 8 (the post-treatment), Week 12 (the follow-up period) and Week 20 (the follow-up period). In addition, changes in intestinal microbiota will be analyzed using 16S rRNA high-throughput detection, and the concentration of relevant inflammatory cytokines in serum will be measured by ELISA based on blood samples. Abstract
BACKGROUND Constipation is a common gastrointestinal symptom in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Several studies on the general population have demonstrated a link between allergic diseases and constipation. However, evidence regarding the association between allergic diseases and constipation in UC is limited. This study aims to evaluate this issue in Japanese patients with UC. METHODS This cross-sectional study recruited consecutive 387 patients with UC. We used a self-administered questionnaire to estimate the prevalence of physician-diagnosed allergic diseases. The definition of constipation was based on Rome I criteria and/or medication for constipation. RESULTS The prevalence of constipation was 12.5%. The prevalence rates of asthma, atopic dermatitis, pollen allergy, food allergy, and drug allergy were 11.8%, 9.0%, 36.3%, 6.2%, and 8.3%, respectively. Allergic diseases were not associated with constipation (adjusted odds ratio [OR] with asthma (adjusted OR 0.98 [95% confidence interval [CI] 0.27-2.80]), atopic dermatitis (adjusted OR 0.67 [95% CI 0.10-2.56]), pollen allergy (adjusted OR 0.92 [95% CI 0.41-1.97]), food allergy (adjusted OR 0.76 [95% CI 0.11-2.95]), and drug allergy (adjusted OR 1.06 [95% CI 0.28-3.24]). Additionally, the number of allergic diseases was not associated with the prevalence of constipation. CONCLUSIONS In Japanese UC patients, no association between allergic diseases and constipation was found.

Abstract
Constipation is currently one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders, and its causes are diverse. Multi-strain probiotics are often considered a more effective treatment than single-strain probiotics. In this study, a constipation model was constructed using loperamide hydrochloride to evaluate the ability of a multi-strain probiotic combination of four different ratios of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus to regulate intestinal flora, relieve constipation, and explore the initial mechanism in mice. After four weeks of probiotic intervention, BM1, BM2, and PB2 effectively relieved constipation; however, the pathways involved were different. The Bifidobacteria-dominated formulations BM1 and BM2 mainly changed the composition and structure of the intestinal flora and significantly decreased the relative abundance of Tyzzerella, Enterorhabdus, Faecalibaculum, Gordonibacter, and Mucispirillum in stool; increased the relative abundance of Parabacteroides and the content of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in stool; restored motilin (MTL) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) levels; and downregulated interleukin 6 (IL-6) and IL-8 levels in serum. This repaired the inflammatory response caused by constipation. Finally, it promoted peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract, increasing stool water content, and relieving constipation. While Lactobacillus-dominated formula PB2 mainly restored the levels of serum neurotransmitters (MTL, SP (substance P), VIP and PYY (Peptide YY)) and inflammatory factors (IL-1, IL-6 and IL-8), it significantly decreased the relative abundance of Tyzzerella, Enterorhabdus, Faecalibaculum, Gordonibacter and Mucispirillum in stool; it then increased acetic acid content, thereby reducing the level of inflammation and changing stool properties and gastrointestinal motility.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the possible effects and mechanism of Zhizhu Decoction (ZZD) on the pathophysiology of slow transit constipation (STC). METHODS A total of 54 C57BL/6 mice was randomly divided into the following 6 groups by a random number table, including control, STC model (model), positive control, and low-, medium- and high-doses ZZD treatment groups (5, 10, 20 g/kg, namely L, M-, and H-ZZD, respectively), 9 mice in each group. Following 2-week treatment, intestinal transport rate (ITR) and fecal water content were determined, and blood and colon tissue samples were collected. Hematoxylin-eosin and periodic acid-Schiff staining were performed to evaluate the morphology of colon tissues and calculate the number of goblet cells. To determine intestinal permeability, serum levels of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and mannose were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Western blot analysis was carried out to detect the expression levels of intestinal tight junction proteins zona-occludens-1 (ZO-1), claudin-1, occludin and recombinant mucin 2 (MUC2). The mRNA expression levels of inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-4, IL-10 and IL-22 were determined using reverse transcription-quantitative reverse transcription reaction. Colon indexes of oxidative stress were measured by ELISA, and protein expression levels of colon silent information regulator 1/forkhead box O transcription factor 1 (SIRT1/FoxO1) antioxidant signaling pathway were detected by Western blot. RESULTS Compared with the model group, ITR and fecal moisture were significantly enhanced in STC mice in the M-ZZD and H-ZZD groups (P<0.01). Additionally, ZZD treatment notably increased the thickness of mucosal and muscular tissue, elevated the number of goblet cells in the colon of STC mice, reduced the secretion levels of LPS, LDL and mannose, and upregulated ZO-1, claudin-1, occludin and MUC2 expressions in the colon in a dose-dependent manner, compared with the model group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). In addition, ZZD significantly attenuated intestinal inflammation and oxidative stress and activated the SIRT1/FoxO1 signaling pathway (P<0.05 or P<0.01). CONCLUSION ZZD exhibited beneficial effects on the intestinal system of STC mice and alleviated intestinal inflammation and oxidative stress via activating SIRT1/FoxO1 antioxidant signaling pathway in the colon.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The efficacy of washed microbiota transplantation (WMT) in terms of refractory functional constipation (FC)-related therapeutic targets and influencing factors have not been elucidated. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and influencing factors of WMT in treating refractory FC-related therapeutic targets. METHODS The clinical data of patients diagnosed with refractory FC and received with WMT were retrospectively collected. The therapeutic targets included straining, hard stools, incomplete evacuation, a sense of anorectal obstruction, manual maneuvers, and decreased stool frequency. Each target was recorded as 1 (yes) or 0 (no). All patients were followed up for approximately 24 weeks from the end of the first course of WMT. The primary outcomes were the improvement rates for the individual therapeutic targets and the overall response in respect of the therapeutic targets decreased by 2 at weeks 4, 8, and 24. The secondary outcomes were the clinical remission rate (i.e., the proportion of patients with an average of 3 or more spontaneous complete bowel movements per week), clinical improvement rate (i.e., the proportion of patients with an average increase of 1 or more SCBMs/week or patients with remission), stool frequency, Wexner constipation score, Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) score, and adverse events. The factors influencing the efficacy were also analyzed. RESULTS Overall, 63 patients with 112 WMT courses were enrolled. The improvement rates at weeks 8 and 24 were 45.6% and 35.0%, 42.9% and 38.6%, 45.0% and 35.7%, 55.6% and 44.4%, and 60.9% and 50.0%, respectively, for straining, hard stools, incomplete evacuation, a sense of anorectal obstruction, and decreased stool frequency. The overall response rates were 49.2%, 50.8%, and 42.9%, respectively, at weeks 4, 8, and 24. The rates of clinical remission and clinical improvement were 54.0% and 68.3%, respectively, at weeks 4. The stool frequency, BSFS score, and Wexner constipation score tended to improve post-WMT. Only 22 mild adverse events were observed during the 112 WMT courses and the follow-up. The number of WMT courses was identified to be the independent factor influencing the efficacy. CONCLUSIONS WMT is efficacious in improving refractory FC-related therapeutic targets. The effectiveness of WMT in the management of FC is enhanced with the administration of multiple courses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are among the most prescribed drugs worldwide; therefore, assessing their effect on COVID-19 infection symptoms and severity is of great importance. This study was designed to evaluate the role of previous PPI consumption on the clinical presentation and severity of COVID-19. PATIENTS AND METHODS All adult COVID-19 patients were eligible in this observational cross-sectional study. The patients' demographic and clinical data, history of PPI consumption, and comorbid disease were recorded. Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) and quick COVID-19 severity index (qCSI) score were calculated for each patient. IBM SPSS version 25 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS Totally 670 patients completed the study (PPI users=121). The average severity (qCSI) score of PPI user patients with comorbidity score of zero was significantly higher than non-users (P-value=0.001). Mortality rate was 6.6% and 3.8% in PPI-users and non-users respectively (P-value=0.117). PPI users were significantly more symptomatic compared to non-users (P-value=0.001). CONCLUSION We found that PPI users were meaningfully more symptomatic and had a higher severity (qCSI) score. Rational prescription of PPIs should be considered by physicians during and after the pandemic.

Abstract
To determine whether oxidative stress and inflammation are associated with constipation by examining the expression of the main producers of reactive oxygen species, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidases, and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the colon of patients with chronic functional constipation. The colonic biopsies were collected from 32 patients with chronic functional constipation and 30 healthy subjects who underwent colonoscopy. Colonic mucosal histology was observed. Interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8 messenger RNA (mRNA), and 4 members of NADPH oxidase (NOX1, NOX2, DUOX2, and NOX4) protein and mRNA were assessed by immunohistochemistry, western blotting, and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The tissues from both patients and healthy subjects showed normal histological structure without increase of inflammatory cells. NOX1 protein and mRNA levels were significantly increased compared to controls (P < .05). DUOX2 protein, but not mRNA, was increased by 2-fold compared to controls (P < .05). The levels of NOX2 and NOX4 protein and mRNA demonstrated no significant difference between patients and control subjects. The levels of IL-1β and IL-6 mRNA were significantly higher in constipation patients (P < .05), while IL-8 mRNA level was no different between the 2 groups. NADPH oxidase and pro-inflammatory cytokine might be involved in the pathogeneses of chronic functional constipation.

Abstract
Background Previous studies suggested that unhealthy sleep patterns were closely associated with gastrointestinal diseases, but the impact of unhealthy sleep duration on chronic constipation has not been well studied until now. In this study, we aim to explore the association between sleep duration and constipation among males and females. Methods We utilized the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys data from 2005 to 2010, and adults (≥20 years old) who completed the sleep and bowel health questionnaires were enrolled in this observational study. Sleep duration was categorized into four groups: very short sleep (<5 h/night), short sleep (5-6 h/night), normal sleep (7-8 h/night), and long sleep (≥9 h/night). Chronic constipation was defined as Bristol Stool Scale Type 1(separate hard lumps, like nuts) or Type 2(sausage-like but lumpy). Controlling demographic, lifestyle, and dietary factors, the logistic regression model in Generalized Linear Model (GLM) function was used to estimate the correlation of sleep duration with constipation among men and women. Results Of the 11,785 individuals (51.2% males and 48.8% females), 4.3% of men and 10.2% of women had constipation, respectively. More than half of patients with constipation did not adopt the recommended sleep duration. Compared with normal individuals, male participants with constipation had a higher proportion of shorter sleep duration (41.0 vs. 32.3% in the short sleep group and 6.3 vs. 4.7% in the very short sleep group), and female individuals with constipation had a higher proportion of long sleep duration (12.7 vs. 8.2%). After covariates adjustment, men with short sleep duration (5-6 h/night) correlated with increased odds for constipation (OR:1.54, 95%CI:1.05-2.25), and women with long sleep duration (≥9 h/night) linked to the higher constipation risk (OR:1.58, 95%CI:1.10-2.29). Excessive sleep duration in males or insufficient sleep duration in females was neither linked to increased nor decreased constipation risk. Conclusions In this observational study of a nationally representative sample of adults, we demonstrate a differential impact of unhealthy sleep duration on constipation among men and women. Short sleep duration poses a higher risk of constipation in men, and excessive sleep duration correlates with higher constipation risk in women.

Abstract
Management of glioblastoma should be aggressive and personalised to increase the quality of life. Many new therapies, such as active immunotherapy, increase the overall survival, yet they result in complications which render the search for the optimal treatment stra-tegy challenging.
In order to answer whether the available treatment options should be administered in a specific row, we performed a literature search and meta-analysis. The results show that overall survival among the different treatment groups was equal, while the rates of complications were unequal. After surgery, when active immunotherapy was administered before radiation, radiation and chemotherapy, complication rates were lower.
For newly diagnosed glioblastoma in adults, applying active immunotherapy after total resection but before the other complementary treatment options is associated with lower complication rates.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Probiotics may have beneficial effects on intestinal dysbiosis. However, the effects of probiotics on redox and inflammatory responses in intestinal constipation remain unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a multiple-strain probiotic on the redox and inflammatory responses in individuals with intestinal constipation. METHODS A randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled clinical trial was conducted with individuals diagnosed with constipation (defined according to the Rome IV criteria). The participants were randomized into two groups to receive either a probiotic capsule (PC; n = 25) containing probiotic strains or to receive a control capsule (CC; n = 20) containing a matching placebo for 30 d. In the baseline and at the end of the study, biomarkers of the redox (malondialdehyde, carbonylated protein, antioxidant enzymes, and ferric-reducing antioxidant power) and inflammatory responses, and Rome IV criteria for constipation were analyzed. RESULTS The consumption of a multiple-strain probiotic attenuated the reduction of glutathione peroxidase (PC = -9.41 and CC = -19.60; P = 0.041) and glutathione-s-transferase activity (PC = -3.28 and CC = -12.08, P < 0.0001) in erythrocytes and marginally improved the symptom of feeling incomplete defecation in ≥25% of bowel movements, compared with the placebo group. No changes were observed in total antioxidant capacity, oxidative damage, and levels of inflammatory markers in the serum. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggested that a multiple-strain probiotic may provide a better enzymatic antioxidant response and partially alleviate the feeling of incomplete defecation in ≥25% of bowel movements in individuals with intestinal constipation.

Abstract
Background Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a burdensome respiratory disorder whose etiology and pathophysiology remain controversial and most likely multifactorial. Accumulated evidence indicates that gut dysbiosis contributes to AR via the gut-airway axis. Constipation could result in alteration of the intestinal microflora. The clinical impact of constipation on AR has not been studied. We aimed to evaluate the risk of AR in constipated patients using a nationwide longitudinal population-based cohort. Methods We identified 57786 patients with constipation and 57786 matched controls between 1999 and 2013 from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, which is a subset of Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database. Propensity score analysis was used for matching age, sex, comorbidities, and medications at a ratio of 1:1. Multiple Cox regression and subgroup analyses were used to estimate the adjusted hazard ratio of AR. Results The incidence of AR was 32.2 per 1,000 person-years in constipated patients, which was twice that of non-constipated patients. After adjustment for patients’ age, gender, comorbidities, and medications, patients with constipation had a 2.3-fold risk of AR compared to those without constipation (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 2.30; 95% CI, 2.23–2.37). In subgroup analyses, patients aged 20–39 years had a 2.24-fold higher risk of AR in the constipation cohort (aHR; 95% CI, 2.12–2.36). Patients aged <20, 40–64, and ≥65 years had a 2.09, 2.05, and 2.07-fold risk of AR in the constipation cohort, respectively (aHR; 95% CI, 1.98–2.20, 1.94–2.18, and 1.92–2.23). Also, patients with constipation had a higher likelihood of AR, regardless of sex, and with or without comorbidities including hyperlipidemia, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, rheumatoid arthritis, dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, and anxiety. Conclusion Constipation might be associated with an increased risk of incidental AR. It seems that physicians should keep a higher index of suspicion for AR in people with constipation. The patency issue of gut could not be ignored in patients with AR.

Abstract
Increasing researches have confirmed the relationship between slow-transit constipation and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Many population and animal experiments have identified probiotics as effectors for the relief of constipation symptoms, but the specific mechanism remains unclear. In this intervention study, Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains isolated from five different sources were administered to mice with loperamide-induced constipation, and the impacts of these strains on constipation-related indicators were evaluated. All five strains of L. rhamnosus were found to improve constipation to various degrees. However, contrary to previous studies, the abilities of L. rhamnosus strains to improve constipation symptoms were not associated with the levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the colon. The effects of different strains of L. rhamnosus on constipation relief were associated with different aspects of the GI tract, including gastrointestinal regulatory peptides, neurotransmitters, neurotrophic factors, and gut microbiota. The findings of this study demonstrate that L. rhamnosus strains can alleviate constipation-related symptoms via different pathways independent of SCFAs regulation. This study yields a new perspective for clinical use of probiotics to better improve constipation symptoms, by combining strains with different mechanisms for alleviation of constipation.
