Reproductive Performance of Angus and Brahman Cows Grazing Common Bermudagrass or Endophyte-lnfected Tall Fescue

Effects of Tall Fescue Endophyte Type and Dopamine Receptor D2 Genotype on Cow-Calf Performance during Late Gestation and Early Lactation

Grazing endophyte-infected, toxic tall fescue reduces cow/calf production; therefore, this study examines alternate strategies such as use of novel endophyte fescue varieties during late gestation and early lactation or genetic selection of resistant cows. Pregnant cows (n = 75) were randomly assigned to fescue endophyte type: 1) endophyte-infected ergot alkaloid producing tall fescue (E+) or 2) novel endophyte-infected, non-toxic tall fescue (NOV) within maternal (A|A, n = 38 and G|G, n = 37) DRD2 genotype to examine changes in cow/calf performance and milk production during late gestation and early lactation. Grazing E+ fescue pastures during late gestation reduced cow body weight gain but did not alter calf birth weight compared to NOV. Milk production and calf ADG during the first 30 day of lactation were lower for E+ than NOV. The calving rate was reduced, but not calving interval for E+ cows. The adjusted 205-day weight of calves was lower in those grazing E+ with their dams compared to NOV. There were no interactions between DRD2 genotype and fescue endophyte type indicating that genotype was not associated with response to E+ fescue in this study. Overall, grazing NOV tall fescue pastures rather than E+ during critical stages of production improved cow gain during late gestation, calving rate, early milk production and calf growth.

Evaluation of Resistance to Fescue Toxicosis in Purebred Angus Cattle Utilizing Animal Performance and Cytokine Response

Fescue toxicosis is a multifaceted syndrome common in cattle grazing endophyte-infected tall fescue; however, varying symptomatic responses potentially imply genetic tolerance to the syndrome. It was hypothesized that a subpopulation of animals within a herd would develop tolerance to ergot alkaloid toxicity. Therefore, the goals of this study were to develop selection criteria to identify tolerant and susceptible animals within a herd based on animal performance, and then examine responsive phenotypic and cytokine profiles to fescue toxicosis. Angus cows grazed endophyte-infected tall fescue at two locations for 13 weeks starting in mid-April 2016. Forage measurements were collected to evaluate ergot alkaloid exposure during the study. A post hoc analysis of animal performance was utilized to designate cattle into either tolerant or susceptible groups, and weekly physiological measurements and blood samples were collected to evaluate responses to chronic exposure to endophyte-infected tall fescue. Findings from this study support the proposed fescue toxicosis selection method formulated herein, could accurately distinguish between tolerant and susceptible animals based on the performance parameters in cattle chronically exposed to ergot alkaloids, and provides evidence to warrant additional analysis to examine the impact of ergot alkaloids on immune responsiveness in cattle experiencing fescue toxicosis.

Effects of body condition on measures of intramuscular and rump fat, endocrine factors, and calving rate of beef cows grazing common bermudagrass or endophyte-infected tall fescue

Multiparous beef cows were managed to achieve marginal (BCS = 4.7 ± 0.07; n = 106) or good (BCS = 6.6 ± 0.06; n = 121) body condition (BC) to determine the influence of forage environment on BW and BC changes, intramuscular fat percentage (IMF), rump fat (RF), and serum hormones during 2 yr. Cows within each BC were randomly assigned to graze either common bermudagrass (CB; n = 3 pastures/yr) or toxic endophyte-infected tall fescue (EI; n = 3 pastures/yr) during a 60-d breeding season. Blood samples were collected at d 0, 30, and 60 of the breeding season, and serum concentrations of prolactin (PRL), IGF-I, and cortisol (CORT) were quantified; PRL and progesterone (P(4)) also were quantified 10 d before the breeding season (d -10). Body weight and BCS were recorded during the breeding season (d 0, 30, and 60). Cow IMF and RF were measured via ultrasonography at the start and end of the breeding season. Cows with increased (>1 ng/mL) P(4) at the beginning of the breeding season (cyclic) had greater (P < 0.02) concentrations of PRL on d 30 and 60 compared with anestrous cows. A forage environment × BC interaction tended (P = 0.07) to influence PRL. Cows grazing CB independent of BC had increased PRL compared with cows grazing EI. Prolactin was decreased in good-BC cows grazing EI compared with cows grazing CB, and cows in marginal BC grazing EI had the least concentrations of PRL. Concentrations of IGF-I were similar (P > 0.10) among good- and marginal-BC cows grazing CB, as well as good-BC cows grazing EI; however, marginal-BC cows grazing EI had reduced (P < 0.04) concentrations of IGF-I compared with all other groups. Cows in marginal BC grazing CB gained (P = 0.02) the most BW during the breeding season, whereas good-BC cows grazing EI gained the least amount of BW. Marginal-BC cows grazing CB tended (P = 0.06) to increase BC during the breeding season, whereas good-BC cows grazing either CB or EI lost BC. Rump fat tended (P = 0.07) to increase during the breeding season in marginal-BC cows compared with cows in good BC. Calving rates were similar (P > 0.10) among good- (82%) and marginal- (84%) BC cows grazing CB, and good-BC cows grazing EI (79%); however, marginal-BC cows grazing EI had a reduced (P = 0.04) calving rate (61%). Cattle grazing EI during the breeding season lost BC. That reduction in BC may be communicated to the pituitary via hormones that include IGF-I or PRL or both, resulting in decreased calving rates.

Productivity of cow–calf pairs grazing tall fescue pastures infected with either the wild-type endophyte or a nonergot alkaloid-producing endophyte strain, AR5421,2

The nonergot alkaloid-producing endo-phyte, AR542, has been shown to improve the persistence and yield of tall fescue pastures without causing the animal disorders commonly associated with tall fescue toxicosis. A 3-yr grazing study was conducted to compare effects of AR542-infected tall fescue pastures with wild type endophyte-infected (E+) tall fescue pastures on cow-calf performance. Replicated 7.3-ha pastures of each treatment were grazed by cow-calf pairs (16 pairs per pasture replication) each year from March to weaning in September. The cows were exposed to breeding on their respective pasture treatments from April 1 through June 15. The treatment groups were compared for reproductive performance, ADG, BCS, calf growth rate, and weaning weight. Blood samples were also collected for serum prolactin (PRL) analysis. There were no significant differences in calving rate (P = 0.98) or calving interval (P = 0.62) between pasture treatments. Cows that grazed the AR542 pastures subsequently gave birth to calves that were heavier (P < 0.05) than calves from cows that had grazed the E+ pastures. Cows grazing the AR542 pastures had higher (P < 0.05) BCS at the end of the grazing period, and had higher ADG during the grazing period. Calves raised on the AR542 pasture had higher (P < 0.05) ADG and weaning weights than calves of the same sex raised on the E+ pastures. Serum PRL concentrations were decreased (P < 0.05) in both cows and calves on the E+ pastures compared with serum PRL concentrations in cows and calves grazing the AR542 pastures. The results indicate that grazing tall fescue pastures infected with the AR542 endophyte may give significant advantages in cow-calf growth rates and BCS over grazing E+ pastures. However, there did not seem to be any benefit in reproductive performance in this trial. There was a small, but significant increase in birth weight in cows grazing AR542 pasture.

Changes in ovarian function in mature beef cows grazing endophyte infected tall fescue

The objective was to examine follicular and luteal development and function in mature, lactating beef cows grazing endophyte free (E-) or endophyte infected (E+) tall fescue during the early postpartum period. Angus, Hereford, and Angus x Hereford cows were exposed to pasture for 37-39 days before synchronized estrus. Serum concentrations of prolactin were evaluated during the luteal phase before the synchronized estrus. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for one estrous cycle ovaries were monitored by transrectal ultrasonography and blood was collected for determination of serum concentrations of progesterone and estradiol in cows that responded to synchronization. Signs of fescue toxicosis in E+ cows included decreased serum concentrations of prolactin (84.9+/-13.6 pg/ml versus 32.3+/-12.0 pg/ml; P < 0.009) measured during the luteal phase (day 37 of grazing) and decreased body condition of cows and weight of cows and calves (P < 0.001). Neither serum concentrations of progesterone or estradiol, nor diameter of the CL differed between treatments. Diameter of the largest follicle tended to be smaller for cows grazing E+ fescue, especially between days 8 and 12 of the estrous cycle (P < 0.08). Numbers of class 1 (3-5 mm) and class 3 (>10 mm) follicles were similar (P > 0.05) between treatments, but number of class 2 (6-9 mm) follicles was reduced in E+ cows for most of the cycle (days 10 through 20; P < 0.03). Length of synchronized estrous cycle, days open, calving interval, and pregnancy rate at 30, 45, 60, and 90 days post-breeding was similar (P > 0.05) among treatment groups. Even though follicular dynamics (diameter of the largest follicle and number of class 2 follicles) were altered in cows grazing E+ tall fescue, follicular function was apparently not affected by ergot alkaloids.

Reproductive responses to grazing endophyte-infected tall fescue by postpartum beef cows

The objective was to determine pregnancy rate and stage of embryonic loss in response to grazing endophyte-free (E-; n = 20) or infected (E+; n = 30) tall fescue in postpartum beef cows with calves. Three weeks before estrus synchronization, cow-calf pairs were introduced to pastures (April 1999). Cows were synchronized and bred by AI after detected estrus for a period of 6 d and then by natural service for 62 d. Bulls were rotated weekly to minimize effects of fescue toxicosis on male fertility. Fetal development was monitored weekly between 30 and 60 d of pregnancy and at weaning using transrectal ultrasound. Respiration rate (52.0 +/- 1.4 vs 46.6 breaths/min; P < 0.02) and rectal temperature (39.6 +/- .09 vs 38.8 +/- .12 degrees C; P < 0.001) increased in E+ cows and serum concentrations of prolactin (7.2 vs 57.4 +/- 4.4 ng/mL; P < 0.001), total cholesterol (123.2 vs 149.6 +/- 3.6 mg/dL; P < 0.001), body condition (3.8 vs 5.2 +/- 0.15; P < 0.001; 1 = thin, 9 = fat) and adjusted weaning weight of calves (195.8 vs 210.8 +/- 4.5 kg; P < 0.02) were reduced compared to that of E- cows. Differences were not detected (E- vs E+) for estrus detection rate (84.9 +/- 10.6% vs 80.2 +/- 8.4%), pregnancy rate to synchronized estrus (41.7 +/- 11.8% vs 46.8 +/- 9.5%), overall pregnancy rate 30 d postbreeding (93.8 +/- 6.2% vs 93.5 +/- 5.1%), overall pregnancy rate at 60 d postbreeding (86.7 +/- 10.1% vs 81.2 +/- 8.3%), or serum concentrations of progesterone on day of PGF2alpha treatment (4.5 +/- 0.7 vs 4.5 +/- 0.8 ng/mL). Pregnancy losses that occurred between 30 and 60 d gestation were 6.0 (E-) vs 15.0 (E+) +/- 8.0% (P > 0.10) and occurred after environmental temperatures rose above 37.8 degrees C for three weeks. Total pregnancy losses that occurred by weaning (between 70 and 126 d of gestation) were 5.5 (E-) vs 17.6 (E+) +/- 8.0% (P > 0.10). Pregnancy rate and embryonic losses were not different between cows grazing E- and E+ tall fescue under these management conditions.
