Abstract
Vitamins play a crucial role in the proper functioning of organisms. Disturbances of their levels, seen as deficiency or excess, enhance the development of various diseases, including those of the cardiovascular, immune, or respiratory systems. The present paper aims to summarize the role of vitamins in one of the most common diseases of the respiratory system, asthma. This narrative review describes the influence of vitamins on asthma and its main symptoms such as bronchial hyperreactivity, airway inflammation, oxidative stress, and airway remodeling, as well as the correlation between vitamin intake and levels and the risk of asthma in both pre- and postnatal life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of childhood asthma is complex, and determinants of risk may begin in utero. OBJECTIVE To describe the association of systemic prenatal inflammation, measured by plasma C-reactive protein (CRP), with childhood asthma, eczema, and allergic rhinitis. METHODS A total of 522 maternal-offspring pairs from the Vitamin D Antenatal Asthma Reduction Trial were included. Prenatal plasma CRP level was measured between 10 and 18 weeks of gestation and between 32 and 38 weeks of gestation. Offspring asthma, eczema, and allergic rhinitis were assessed quarterly between birth and age 6 years. We performed mediation analyses of prenatal CRP on the association between several maternal characteristics and offspring asthma. RESULTS Elevated early and late prenatal CRP and an increase in CRP from early to late pregnancy were associated with asthma by age 6 years (early: adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.76, 95% CI, 1.12-2.82, P = .02; late: aOR, 2.45, 95% CI, 1.47-4.18, P < .001; CRP increase: aOR, 2.06, 95% CI, 1.26-3.39, P < .004). Prenatal CRP and childhood asthma associations were strengthened among offspring with atopic asthma (early: aOR, 3.78, 95% CI, 1.49-10.64, P = .008; late: aOR, 4.84, 95% CI, 1.68-15.50, P = .005; CRP increase: aOR, 3.01, 95% CI, 1.06-9.16, P = .04). Early and late prenatal CRP mediated 96% and 86% of the association between maternal prepregnancy body mass index and offspring asthma, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Higher prenatal CRP and an increase in CRP from early to late pregnancy are associated with childhood asthma. Systemic inflammation during pregnancy associated with modifiable maternal characteristics may be an important determinant of childhood asthma risk.

Abstract
Objective The incidences of celiac disease (CD) and asthma are increasing and the two conditions are associated in individuals. Risk of asthma may be passed on to the next generation through shared risk factors. We examined whether parental CD is associated with risk of asthma in offspring. Methods We conducted a population-based Danish nationwide cohort study, using medical databases, covering the period 1 January 1979 to 31 December 2009. For each child with a parental history of CD, we randomly sampled 100 children without this history from the children born in the same calendar year. We used Cox proportional-hazards regression to estimate incidence rate ratios for asthma, adjusting for measured covariates. Results We identified 1,107 children with a parental history of CD and 110,700 children without this parental history. During up to 32 years of follow-up, 6,125 children received a hospital diagnosis of asthma. The adjusted incidence rate ratio for asthma associated with a parental history of CD was 1.09 (95% confidence interval: 0.86–1.39) and was similar for maternal and paternal CD. Inclusion of asthma-medication in the definition of asthma did not substantially change the results. Conclusion There was no convincing evidence of an increased risk of asthma among offspring of parents with CD.

Abstract
Humans have the ability to synthesize vitamin D during the action of ultraviolet (UV) radiation upon the skin. Apart from the regulation of calcium and phosphate metabolism, another critical role for vitamin D in immunity and respiratory health has been revealed, since vitamin D receptors have also been found in other body cells. The term "vitamin D insufficiency" has been used to describe low levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D that may be associated with a wide range of pulmonary diseases, including viral and bacterial respiratory infection, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cancer. This review focuses on the controversial relationship between vitamin D and asthma. Also, it has been found that different gene polymorphisms of the vitamin D receptor have variable associations with asthma. Other studies investigated the vitamin D receptor signaling pathway in vitro or in experimental animal models and showed either a beneficial or a negative effect of vitamin D in asthma. Furthermore, a range of epidemiological studies has also suggested that vitamin D insufficiency is associated with low lung function. In the future, clinical trials in different asthmatic groups, such as infants, children of school age, and ethnic minorities are needed to establish the role of vitamin D supplementation to prevent and/or treat asthma.

Abstract
The complication of asthma during pregnancy is associated with a number of poor outcomes for the mother and fetus. This may be partially driven by increased oxidative stress induced by the combination of asthma and pregnancy. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways associated with systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, which contributes to worsening asthma symptoms. Pregnancy alone also intensifies oxidative stress through the systemic generation of excess reactive oxidative species (ROS). Antioxidants combat the damaging effects of ROS; yet antioxidant defenses are reduced in asthma. Diet and nutrition have been postulated as potential factors to combat the damaging effects of asthma. In particular, dietary antioxidants may play a role in alleviating the heightened oxidative stress in asthma. Although there are some observational and interventional studies that have shown protective effects of antioxidants in asthma, assessment of antioxidants in pregnancy are limited and there are no antioxidant intervention studies in asthmatic pregnancies on asthma outcomes. The aims of this paper are to (i) review the relationships between oxidative stress and dietary antioxidants in adults with asthma and asthma during pregnancy, and (ii) provide the rationale for which dietary management strategies, specifically increased dietary antioxidants, might positively impact maternal asthma outcomes. Improving asthma control through a holistic antioxidant dietary approach might be valuable in reducing asthma exacerbations and improving asthma management during pregnancy, subsequently impacting perinatal health.
