Difference in Physiological Components of VO2 Max During Incremental and Constant Exercise Protocols for the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test

Influence of repeated bouts of eccentric exercise on high-intensity aerobic performance

[Purpose] It is believed that eccentric high-intensity exercise can decrease performance in subsequent exercise. However, with repetition, the deleterious effects can be minimized. Thus, this study evaluated the influence of repeated bouts of eccentric exercise on subsequent high-intensity aerobic performance. [Subjects and Methods] Seven healthy and sedentary male volunteers were recruited. a) Visit 1: determination of maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) and speed associated with maximum oxygen uptake (vVO2max) in incremental treadmill testing; b) Visit 2: run to exhaustion at vVO2max (Tlim control); c) Visit 3: 10 sets of 10 depth jumps, followed by a run to exhaustion at vVO2max (Tlim 1); d) Visit 4: after 6 weeks without any physical training, the volunteers carried out the same procedures as on the third visit (Tlim 2). Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the post-hoc Tukey test. [Results] Significant differences were found between Tlim control and Tlim 1 (283.4 ± 47.7 s vs. 125.2 ± 64.1 s, respectively), these were not different from Tlim 2. [Conclusion] Eccentric exercise showed deleterious effects on subsequent high-intensity aerobic performance. These effects were minimized after the exercise protocol was repeated 6 weeks after the first event.

Double product break point estimates ventilatory threshold in individuals with type 2 diabetes

[Purpose] To verify the identification of the anaerobic threshold through the double product breakpoint (DPBP) method for individuals with type 2 diabetes. [Subjects and Methods] Nine individuals with T2D (7 females; age=63.2 ± 8.9 y) and 10 non-diabetic (ND) (7 females; age=58.3 ± 7.8 y) performed an incremental exercise test on a cycle ergometer. Heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP) and expired gas were measured at the end of each stage. The ventilatory threshold (VT) and DPBP were considered as the exercise intensities above which an over proportional increases in VE and DP were observed in relation to increasing workload. [Results] No differences were observed between the workloads, HR and VO2 corresponding to the AT identified respectively by VT and DPBP. For the T2D, strong correlations between VT and DBPB workloads (r=0.853), HR (r=0.714), and VO2 (r=0.863) were found. These relationships were similar to those found for the control group (r=0.923; r=0.881; and r=0.863, respectively). [Conclusion] These results demonstrate that the DPBP enables for the prediction of AT and correlated well the VT in both the T2D and ND participants.

Relative variances of the cadence frequency of cycling under two differential saddle heights

[Purpose] Bicycle saddle height is a critical factor for cycling performance and injury prevention. The present study compared the variance in cadence frequency after exercise fatigue between saddle heights with 25° and 35° knee flexion. [Methods] Two saddle heights, which were determined by setting the pedal at the bottom dead point with 35° and 25° knee flexion, were used for testing. The relative variances of the cadence frequency were calculated at the end of a 5-minute warm-up period and 5 minutes after inducing exercise fatigue. Comparison of the absolute values of the cadence frequency under the two saddle heights revealed a difference in pedaling efficiency. [Results] Five minutes after inducing exercise fatigue, the relative variances of the cadence frequency for the saddle height with 35° knee flexion was higher than that for the saddle height with 25° knee flexion. [Conclusion] The current finding demonstrated that a saddle height with 25° knee flexion is more appropriate for cyclists than a saddle height with 35° knee flexion.

Exercise intensity criteria for routine rehabilitation therapy for stroke patients

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to observe the relationships among heart rate, rate of perceived exertion, and oxygen consumption in stroke patients and the effectiveness of improving aerobic capacity during routine rehabilitation therapy. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty-six stroke patients participated in the study. A K4b² pulmonary function device was used to record heart rate (beats per minute), oxygen consumption (Equation Section (Next)ml·min⁻¹·kg⁻¹), and rate of perceived exertion. Results were recorded after completing the following activities continuously: (1) silent sitting, (2) sit-to-stand transfers, (3) hip extension while standing against a wall, (4) weight loading on the affected leg, (5) upward and downward leg movements on a stall bar, (6) walking up and down a flight of stairs, and (7) a 60-meter walk. Correlation analyses were performed to demonstrate the relationship of oxygen consumption with HR and RPE. [Results] Moderate correlation was found between HR and oxygen consumption, and low correlation was found between rate of perceived exertion and oxygen consumption. The routine rehabilitation therapy could reduce the accumulation of lactate. [Conclusion] HR is a better index than rate of perceived exertion in evaluating exercise intensity in stroke patients. The routine rehabilitation therapy can improve the aerobic capacity of stroke patients.
