Development and validation of a video on first aid for choking incidents in the school environment

OBJECTIVE

To develop and validate an educational video on first aid for choking incidents in children in the school environment.

METHOD

Methodological study, conducted between 2021 and 2022, in six stages: search for themes through interviews with 13 teachers and staff members who work in early childhood education in Niterói; theoretical study; development of the video; validation with 17 expert judges; video adaptation and validation with 17 teachers and staff. The interviews were analyzed using the Iramuteq software and the validation through the concordance index, with a desirable value of 70%.

RESULTS

The animated video, lasting 4 minutes and 10 seconds, addressed the identification and management of the child experiencing choking and was validated with a concordance index of 97% among the judges and 96% with target audience.

CONCLUSION

The video is a validated technology that can be used to develop educational practices with professionals in the school environment.

SELF-ASSESSMENT OF PRIMARY CARE NURSES ABOUT CARE FOR PEOPLE WITH VENOUS ULCERS: A CROSS-CUTTING STUDY

Objective: To identify the self-knowledge of primary care nurses about care for people with venous ulcers. Method: This is a cross-sectional study with 40 nurses working in health units. Two data collection instruments were used: characterization, developed by the author, and self-assessment on venous ulcers. Results: All questions of the self-assessment instrument reached medians classified as little level of knowledge, except questions related to the application of elastic compression therapy, with the median = 3 (moderate), and the evaluation of lower limbs to investigate arterial involvement, with 3.50, between little and moderate. The item cleaning the lesion stood out, which obtained median = 4 (little) and the highest average found in the responses, 4.03 (little). Conclusion:The nurse’s self-assessment reached moderate and low scores of clinical practice in terms of knowing (theoretical knowledge) and doing (practical knowledge) in the care of people with venous ulcers. Venous ulcer is a complex wound and requires knowledge from nurses about the pathophysiology and appropriate treatment, interfering with the improvement of the person’s quality of life. It is believed that this study can encourage the reflection of this professional and education actions in the services.

AUTOAVALIAÇÃO DE ENFERMEIROS DA ATENÇÃO PRIMÁRIA SOBRE ASSISTÊNCIA À PESSOA COM ÚLCERAS VENOSAS: UM ESTUDO DE CORTE TRANSVERSA

Objetivo:Identificar o autoconhecimento de enfermeiros da atenção primária sobre assistência à pessoa com úlceras venosas. Método: Trata-se de um estudo de corte transversal com 40 enfermeiros lotados em unidades de saúde. Utilizaram-se dois instrumentos de coleta de dados: caracterização, elaborada pelo autor, e autoavaliação sobre úlcera venosa. Resultados: Todas as questões do instrumento autoavaliativo alcançaram medianas classificadas como nível de conhecimento pouco, à exceção das questões relativas à aplicação de terapia compressiva elástica com mediana = 3 (moderado) e à avaliação de membros inferiores para investigar comprometimento arterial, 3,50, entre pouco e moderado. Destacou-se o item limpeza da lesão, o qual obteve a mediana = 4 (pouco) e a maior média encontrada das respostas, 4,03 (pouco). Conclusão: A autoavaliação do enfermeiro atingiu os escores moderado e pouco da prática clínica no que tange ao saber (conhecimento teórico) e ao fazer (conhecimento prático) no cuidado à pessoa com úlcera venosa. A úlcera venosa é uma ferida complexa e exige do enfermeiro conhecimento sobre a fisiopatologia e o tratamento adequado, interferindo na melhora da qualidade de vida dessa pessoa. Acredita-se que este estudo possa fomentar a reflexão desse profissional e ações de educação nos serviços.

Awareness towards stroke among high school students in Brazil: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Stroke is one of the main causes of death worldwide. Educational interventions on stroke are potentially effective in reducing the period between the onset of symptoms and the initial emergency medical assistance.

OBJECTIVES

To assess high school students' knowledge of stroke.

DESIGN AND SETTING

Cross-sectional study conducted in high schools in northeastern Brazil.

METHODS

A self-structured questionnaire survey regarding stroke awareness was applied among high school students in northeastern Brazil. Data were collected between 2018 and 2019. The chi-square test and other descriptive statistics were used. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using logistic regression.

RESULTS

A total of 1,788 students were analyzed. Eighty percent (n = 1430) of them did not have the minimum knowledge on how to act in a stroke situation. Only 10% (n = 179) presented the ideal knowledge on how to act. Males presented lower levels of knowledge on risk factors (odds ratio, OR: 0.62%; 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.49-0.79) and signs and symptoms of stroke (OR: 0.63%; 95% CI: 0.52-0.77). Students with ≥ 10 years of schooling (OR: 1.64%; 95% CI: 1.30-2.07) demonstrated greater knowledge of signs and symptoms of stroke. Students aged 18 years (OR: 1.70%; 95% CI: 1.14-2.52) demonstrated greater knowledge than other ages regarding the telephone number of the emergency medical services.

CONCLUSIONS

There was a knowledge deficit with regard to recognizing stroke and activating the emergency medical services. The findings apply to the sample investigated and suggest that there is a need for stroke educational interventions, starting in high school.

Educational actions on first aid for early childhood education teachers: a quasi-experimental study

OBJECTIVE

To assess the early childhood education teachers' knowledge about first aid before and after the participation in an educational action.

METHOD

Quantitative research with a quasi-experimental pre- and post-test design, carried out with 45 teachers from four early childhood education schools. For data collection, an instrument with questions regarding the characterization of the participants and knowledge about first aid was used. Data were analyzed through statistical techniques, using the Shapiro Wilk and Wilcoxon tests.

RESULTS

There was an increase in the number of correct answers to the questions and improvement regarding grades, with an increase in the score from pre- to post-test by 5.17 points and with a significant comparison of sums.

CONCLUSION

Carrying out educational actions on first aid increases the knowledge of early childhood education teachers on the subject and the nurses' role as health educators is highlighted.

Determinants of knowledge, attitude, and practice towards first aid among kindergarten and elementary school teachers in Gondar city, Northwest Ethiopia

Background

Injuries continue to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the developed and developing world. School-age children are more likely to experience unintentional injuries in the school, while they are playing and teachers are the primarily responsible body for keeping the welfare of the students. Knowing the knowledge, attitude, and practice of kindergarten and elementary school teachers towards first aid will be used as an input for policymakers to intervene and provide training. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess knowledge, attitude, practice, and associated factors towards first aid among kindergarten and elementary school teachers in Gondar city, Northwest Ethiopia, 2021.

Methods

An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from January 01 to 20, 2021. A simple random sampling technique was employed to recruit 346 participants. A structured pretested self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were entered in Epi-info version 7, analyzed using SPSS version 21, and presented by frequencies, percentages, tables, and graphs. Bivariable relationships between the independent and outcome variable were investigated using a binary logistic regression model and a multivariable analysis was run to control potential confounding factors. Variables with a p-value < 0.05 were considered as factors significantly associated and the strength of association was determined using an odds ratio with a 95% CI.

Results

Only 41.1% of the teachers had good knowledge of first aid. Nearly two-thirds (64.8%) of the teachers had a favorable attitude towards first aid. The majority (85.8%) of the teachers who faced a child in need of first aid in their school gave first aid. Factors like working experience [AOR: 2.45; 95% CI (1.26, 4.73)], school level [AOR: 4.72; 95% CI (1.96, 11.4)], school type [AOR: 4.23; 95% CI (2.07, 8.64)], and having information about first aid [AOR: 2.09; 95% CI (1.11, 3.92)] were significantly associated with knowledge. School-level [AOR = 5.4, 95% CI (2.18–11.67)], school type [AOR = 0.45, 95% CI (0.21–0.94)], and working experience [AOR = 0.33, 95% CI (0.13–0.86)] were the factors significantly associated with attitude.

Conclusion

Less than half and nearly two-thirds of the teachers had good knowledge and a favorable attitude towards first aid. The majority of the teachers who encountered a child in need of first aid gave first aid. Having higher working experience, working in elementary and private schools, and having previous information increases the odds of having good knowledge. Teachers who work in elementary and private schools and have the lower working experience had higher odds of favorable attitude towards first aid. It is better to give attention to the training of staff on first aid specifically for teachers working in kindergarten and governmental schools and new employees and consider integrating first aid in teachers’ training curriculum.

Exploring Perceptions of the Work Environment among Psychiatric Nursing Staff in France: A Qualitative Study Using Hierarchical Clustering Methods

Most studies on workers’ health are based on non-specific models of occupational stress, thereby limiting the understanding and research on efficient interventions. This qualitative approach aimed to explore the structure of resources and constraints in the working environment of nurses in a deliberately open approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 37 nurses working in closed and open inpatient psychiatric wards in a French university hospital. The data were statistically analyzed using a hierarchical clustering method. Our model highlighted a systemic structure, describing the interactions, including patients, nurses, doctors, and managers in a specific material, communicational, and organizational environment. The results show a discursive structure organized around dimensions pertaining to “environment”, “patients”, “medical-care group”, and “the individual”. Our model showed interest in an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses occupational medicine and social psychology.
