Abstract
The objective of this study was to operationally define the concept of success in peripheral intravenous catheterization in children considering the Walker and Avant model. This is a methodological study, carried out through the following steps: concept selection, the definition of the analysis objective, identification of possible uses of the concept, determination of critical or essential attributes, construction of a model and opposite case, and identification of antecedents and consequences. The study was carried out based on a search in international databases from January to March 2021. The sample consisted of 47 studies conducted in 17 countries between 2008 and 2021. Five attributes, 20 antecedents, 10 consequences, and an empirical reference of the studied concept were identified. Also, 2 cases, model and opposite, were elaborated, and an operational definition of the concept was developed. The Walker and Avant method enabled the operationalization of the concept of success of peripheral intravenous catheterization in children based on attributes, antecedents and consequents, and model and opposite cases.

Transformational nurse leadership attributes in German hospitals pursuing organization-wide change via Magnet® or Pathway® principles: results from a qualitative study. BMC Health Serv Res 2024; 24:440. [PMID: 38589915 PMCID: PMC11003170 DOI: 10.1186/s12913-024-10862-y] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/27/2023] [Accepted: 03/13/2024] [Indexed: 04/10/2024] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND Budget constraints, staff shortages and high workloads pose challenges for German hospitals. Magnet® and Pathway® are concepts for implementing organization-wide change and redesigning work environments. There is limited research on the key elements that characterize nurse leaders driving the implementation of Magnet®/Pathway® principles outside the U.S. We explored the key attributes of nurse leaders driving organization-wide change through Magnet®/Pathway® principles in German hospitals. METHODS Using a qualitative study design, semi-structured interviews (n = 18) were conducted with nurse leaders, managers, and clinicians, in five German hospitals known as having started implementing Magnet® or Pathway® principles. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed in Atlas.ti using content analysis. For the analysis, a category system was created using a deductive-inductive approach. RESULTS Five leadership attributes and eleven sub-attributes were identified as main themes and sub-themes: Visionary leaders who possess and communicate a strong vision and serve as role models to inspire change. Strategic leaders who focus on strategic planning and securing top management support. Supportive leaders who empower, emphasizing employee motivation, individualized support, and team collaboration. Stamina highlights courage, assertiveness, and resilience in the face of challenges. Finally, agility which addresses a leader's presence, accessibility, and rapid responsiveness, fostering adaptability. CONCLUSIONS The study demonstrates leadership attributes explicitly focusing on instigating and driving organization-wide change through Magnet®/Pathway® principles in five German hospitals. The findings suggest a need for comprehensive preparation and ongoing development of nurse leaders aimed at establishing and sustaining a positive hospital work environment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE to assess the preliminary effect of Problem-Based Learning on Care Management skills. METHOD a quasi-experimental pre- and post-test conducted with students attending the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing offered by an educational institution. The sample was comprised by 29 (Experimental Group) and 74 (Control Group) students. The Experimental Group solved four scenarios under the Problem-Based Learning method with the 7 steps proposed by McMaster University, in a Care Management program in distance mode. The self-reporting instrument assessed the pre- and post-test Care Management skills in both groups. Mean values were obtained and descriptive and inferential statistics were performed (Student's t, paired t, linear regression). RESULTS the Experimental Group obtained higher scores in analytical, action-related and global skills than the Control Group (p<0.05). No differences were recorded in interpersonal skills or in use of the information. The Control presented no significant differences before and after usual teaching, whereas differences were in fact reported in the Experimental Group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION despite the fact that there is little evidence on the development of Nursing Care Management skills, the current study shows that Problem-Based Learning is an effective and significant method in remote education.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES to clarify the concepts of Nursing Care Management and Nursing Care Administration in the scientific literature, highlighting approximations and distances between the terms. METHODS scoping review as per Joanna Briggs Institute protocol and preferred reporting items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The searches were performed in LILACS, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and Scopus databases. RESULTS the qualitative analysis, through content analysis, counted 49 studies published between 2007 and 2020. Hospital care was the most evident level of care. It was identified that nursing care management aims at the macropolitical performance of nurses and mobilizes skills essentially strategic-cognitive, while Nursing Care Administration aims at the micropolitical performance of nurses, requiring essentially strategic-administrative skills. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS the study allowed us to propose the conceptualization of the terms and identify the approximations and distances between them.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The 24 h urgent care units (24 h UCU) in Brazil are the main pre-admission hospital process of the public healthcare system and constitute an intermediate modality between primary care and hospital care. These units also provide care in cases of less severity that are not considered urgent. This study aimed to create and validate the content of a graphic protocol and checklist for the nursing care management of patients with a suspicion or confirmation of infection by COVID-19 at urgent care units. METHODS A methodological study was carried out in three phases: construct of items and dimensions of the checklist; evaluation of the checklist by specialists for content validation; and construct and content validation of the graphic protocol. RESULTS The checklist was evaluated by nine specialists. Eight items received suggestions for changes. Items with a content validity index ≥0.83 were maintained. With regard to content validity, despite the satisfactory level of agreement, the specialists suggested some changes in the writing of eight items. The graphic protocol was evaluated by six specialists and had an overall content validity of 0.97. CONCLUSION The checklist with 44 items and three dimensions (Management, Biosafety and Care) and the protocol achieved a satisfactory standard of content validity for use at 24 h urgent care units. This protocol can contribute to the standardization and guidance of nursing actions in suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19 at urgent care units, ensuring safe care based on scientific evidence.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: to understand discharge plan and the facilities and difficulties for continuity of care in Primary Health Care. Method: a qualitative and exploratory study carried out in Madrid, Barcelona, Murcia, Seville and Granada, with 29 hospital liaison nurses working in university hospitals, between 2016 and 2018. For data collection, an online questionnaire was used with open and closed questions about the profile of nurses; work context; hospital discharge plan; communication between hospital nurses and primary care. All were analyzed based on Thematic Analysis. Results: hospital liaison nurses from Spain draw up a discharge plan at least 48 hours in advance. They offer a Continuity of Care Report, guide patients, families and caregivers to the necessary care after hospital discharge, coordinate consultations and referrals and carry out home visits. Communication with primary care occurs through the computerized system and telephone. Monitoring takes place using indicators and statistical reports. In cases of readmission, nurses are requested and contacted by nurses in primary care. Communication with primary care is among the facilities. Lack of liaison nurses is among the difficulties. Conclusion: hospital liaison nurses from Spain carry out a discharge plan and communicate with primary care. When patients are hospitalized, they are called when there is a need for continuity of care for primary care.
