Lifestyle-Related Determinants of Obesity Among Omani Children

Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Childhood Obesity in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia

Introduction Overweight and obesity are defined as excessive fat accumulation that poses a risk to well-being. In children, a BMI of the 85th percentile to less than the 95th percentile is considered overweight, and the 95th percentile or greater is considered obese. Aim This study aimed to measure the prevalence of childhood obesity in a population of six to 16 years of age and its associated risk factors. Participants and methods This is a cross-sectional study conducted among children aged between six and 16 years old who live in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia. The data collector in each school distributed envelopes containing an informed consent form and a survey to collect data on the demographics and socioeconomic status to all students. All students whose parents signed the informed consent would undergo measurement of growth parameters which ultimately determined the BMI. Results Six hundred eighty-eight children agreed to participate. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 15.3% (overweight 10.2%, obese 5.1%). Children who eat four or more meals per day were 29.5% while only 10% were regularly exercising for more than two hours a day. Independent risk factors of obesity and overweight were eating four or more meals per day. Spending more than an hour a day on physical activity was a protective factor against being overweight and obese. Conclusion Increased daily food consumption was the most frequent risk factor for obesity. Physical activity was the protective factor against obesity in children and adolescents. Further intervention measures must be implemented to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity. A healthy lifestyle based on effective dietary education and physical activity promotion is required to prevent overweight and obesity among youth.

Parenting Styles and Their Associations with Children's Body Composition, Activity Patterns, Fitness, Diet, Health, and Academic Achievement

Background: Evidence regarding the impact of parenting style on health and other outcomes is inconsistent and limited by measurement quality and type. This study will examine associations between parenting style and children's objectively assessed activity patterns, body composition, fitness, diet, health, and academic achievement. Methods: Two hundred fifty-five children (mean age: 9.4 years) from Adelaide, Australia, were included. Parenting style (items from Child Rearing Questionnaire and National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth to assess Authoritative, Authoritarian, Permissive, Disengaged parenting), diet, and health were proxy-reported by parents. Body composition, fitness, and 24 hour activity patterns were objectively measured, and children reported screen-time. Academic achievement was measured using standardized tests in reading and mathematics. Mixed models were used to regress parenting style against activity patterns, body composition, fitness, diet, health, and academic achievement, adjusted for age, sex, socioeconomic position, and pubertal stage. Results: Children with Disengaged parents had poorer activity patterns: less moderate to vigorous physical activity (standard mean difference [SMD] relative to grand mean = -0.23), light physical activity (SMD = -0.13) and sleep (SMD = -0.18), more sitting (SMD = 0.45), later bedtime (SMD = 0.18), lower overall energy expenditure (SMD = -0.23), and poorer overall self-reported health (SMD = -0.30). Children with Permissive parents had generally better activity patterns (SMD = 0.25-0.32). Children with Authoritative parents were more likely to meet dietary guidelines for fruit intake (SMD = 0.12). There were no associations for Authoritarian parenting style or for academic achievement, body composition, or fitness. Conclusions: Disengaged parenting was detrimental, while Permissive parenting was beneficial for activity patterns. As parenting styles may be malleable, future interventions may target Permissive parenting to improve children's activity patterns. Physical Activity Levels of 1053 Omani 4th Grade Children: The Importance of Gender and Sport Team Participation in Achieving 60 Minutes of Daily Moderate-to-Vigorous Physical Activity

Sufficient daily physical activity is associated with many positive mental, physical, and societal benefits in children. Unfortunately, most children worldwide do not achieve recommended levels of daily physical activity (PA), and a majority of evidence is from Western countries and based on subjective measures. This study examined the prevalence and correlates of objectively measured PA levels among Omani children in 2017 (pre-pandemic). A two-stage cluster sampling was used to recruit the 4th grade children across five regions of Oman. A final analytic sample included 1053 children (504 boys, 549 girls) with a mean age of 9.21 years old. PA was objectively measured using a wrist-worn Polar Active Watch during three consecutive school days. Screen-based sedentary behaviors and other PA-related behaviors were subjectively measured. On average, boys were less sedentary and more active, with a greater likelihood of meeting current recommendations when compared with girls. The self-reported time spent in screen-based sedentary behaviors was relatively low for both boys and girls and was not associated with PA; however, sports team participation was associated with a greater likelihood of meeting the current recommendation. The present study provides empirical data on objectively measured PA in Omani children. The gender disparities concerning daily PA, including sports team participation, should receive further attention.
