Carbon and phosphorus transformation during the deposition of particulate matter in the large deep reservoir

As the running time of reservoirs is increasing, a large number of reservoirs are becoming eutrophicated. Organic phosphorus (OP) is a key factor in eutrophication. However, the mechanism and extent to which organic matter degradation affects P recycling in water column of large deep reservoirs are unclear, especially for the newly-built ones. In this study, different forms of carbon (C) and P in the water column of Hongjiadu Reservoir were investigated. The contents of particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate organic phosphorus (POP) both decreased with depth in summer, indicating that organic matter was degraded during the deposition of particulates. In contrast, the contents of POC and POP varied slightly with depth in winter. This difference may result from the double thermal stratification and the corresponding double oxygen stratification in summer. The POC/POP ratios were lower in the epilimnion and increased with depth, suggesting that P was preferentially regenerated relative to C during organic matter degradation. The contents of particulate inorganic phosphorus (PIP) and POP were significantly negatively correlated, indicating that POP transformed into PIP in deeper water. The double thermoclines and oxyclines in Hongjiadu Reservoir lead to very low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations in the hypolimnion, which should receive sufficient attention. If water becomes hypoxic, enhanced P release during organic matter degradation will promote phytoplankton growth, leading to higher phytoplankton biomass and more severe DO depletion. Thus, a positive feedback loop may form among hypoxia, enhanced P release, higher primary productivity, and more severe hypoxia, accelerating P recycling in large deep reservoirs. Once if eutrophication occurs in these reservoirs, it will be very difficult to restore the water ecosystem. Thus, it is particularly important to prevent the occurrence of eutrophication and the formation of positive feedback loop as early as possible. This highlights the importance of both reducing external loading and improving DO level in large deep reservoirs.

Unraveling the sources and fluorescence compositions of dissolved and particulate organic matter (DOM and POM) in Lake Taihu, China

Organic matter (OM), a complex entity with diverse functional groups and molecular sizes, has important effects on aquatic systems. We studied the optical compositions and sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and particulate organic matter (POM) in Lake Taihu, a large, shallow and eutrophic lake in China. Significant differences in optical compositions and sources occurred between the POM and DOM. The temporal-spatial distribution of the fluorescence indices suggested that the POM in Lake Taihu was mainly from autochthonous sources, but more exogenous characteristics were shown in POM in the river mouths compared with other regions. The chromophoric DOM in Lake Taihu mainly displayed autochthonous characteristics. The POM-DOM PARAFAC model was used to examine OM optical composition and five components were identified, which contained three protein-like components (C1, C2, and C5), a microbial humic-like component (C3), and a terrestrial humic-like component (C4). The POM was dominated by C5 in summer and autumn and C3 in winter and spring, and the DOM was dominated by protein-like components (C1, C2, and C5) through the entire year. The algae-dominated region had a relative higher contribution of tryptophan-like components of POM compared with the macrophyte-dominated region. A conceptual model based on the theory of "four phases of cyanobacteria bloom development" was proposed to fully describe the relationship between POM-DOM exchanges and cyanobacteria bloom development.

Characteristics and degradation of carbon and phosphorus from aquatic macrophytes in lakes: Insights from solid-state (13)C NMR and solution (31)P NMR spectroscopy

Water extractable organic matter (WEOM) derived from macrophytes plays an important role in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, including carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in lakes. However, reports of their composition and degradation in natural waters are scarce. Therefore, compositions and degradation of WEOM derived from six aquatic macrophytes species of Tai Lake, China, were investigated by use of solid-state (13)C NMR and solution (31)P NMR spectroscopy. Carbohydrates were the predominant constituents of WEOM fractions, followed by carboxylic acid. Orthophosphate (ortho-P) was the dominant form of P (78.7% of total dissolved P) in the water extracts, followed by monoester P (mono-P) (20.6%) and little diester P (0.65%). The proportion of mono-P in total P species increased with the percentage of O-alkyl and O-C-O increasing in the WEOM, which is likely due to degradation and dissolution of biological membranes and RNA from aquatic plants. Whereas the proportion of mono-P decreased with alkyl-C, NCH/OCH3 and COO/N-C=O increasing, which may be owing to the insoluble compounds including C functional groups of alkyl-C, NCH/OCH3 and COO/N-C=O, such as aliphatic biopolymers, lignin and peptides. Based on the results of this study and information in the literature about water column and sediment, we propose that WEOM, dominated by polysaccharides, are the most labile and bioavailable component in debris of macrophytes. Additionally, these WEOMs would also be a potential source for bioavailable organic P (e.g., RNA, DNA and phytate) for lakes.

Dissolved organic sulfur in streams draining forested catchments in southern China

Dissolved organic sulfur (DOS) is an important fraction for sulfur mobilization in ecosystem. In this work stream waters were sampled in 25 forested sites in southern China to study the dissolved sulfur fractions. Dissolved sulfur was fractionated into dissolved organic sulfur (DOS) and inorganic sulfate (SO4(2-)) for 95 stream water samples. The results showed that the concentration of DOS ranged from 0 to 13.1 mg/L (average 1.3 mg/L) in all the streams. High concentrations of DOS in stream waters were found in the sites with high concentrations of sulfate. DOS constituted less than 60.1% of dissolved sulfur (average 17.9%). Statistical analysis showed that DOS concentration was correlated with SO4(2-) in streams waters and total sulfur in surface layer soils. The results also showed that DOS concentration in stream waters had a seasonal variation, but no trends were found with it. The implication was that the long term sulfur deposition had led the increase of the concentration and fraction of DOS in stream waters in acid rain prevailing regions
