Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dietary inflammatory index (DII) is utilized to determine the inflammatory effects of nutrients and foods on various diseases. Inflammation is a potential risk factor for anemia. We hypothesize that pro-inflammatory diets boost the incidence of anemia, as indicated by high DII. METHODS 41, 360 Americans were included in this study from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) from 2003-2018. Multivariable logistic regression models were employed to examine the association between DII and anemia. RESULTS After adjustment for all the covariates, the odds ratios (ORs) (95% CI) between the risk of anemia and DII across tertile 3 were 1.2556 (95% CI 1.0621, 1.4843; P = 0.0077), and the trend test was statistically significant (P for trend = 0.009). Furthermore, in the subgroup analysis stratified by gender. The ORs (95% CI) between the risk of anemia and DII across tertile 2 and 3 were 1.8071 (95% CI 1.1754, 2.7783; P = 0.0070) and 2.1591 (95% CI 1.4009, 3.3278; P = 0.0005) in men after multivariable adjustment. However, in women, this association was only significantly different (P < 0.05) across tertile 3 in the crude model. In the subgroup analysis stratified by race, this association was significant (P < 0.05) between the risk of anemia and DII for Non-Hispanic Whites/Blacks after adjustment. DISCUSSION Together, anemia was significantly associated with DII using logistic regression. In stratified analyses, higher DII scores were linked to an increased incidence of anemia in men, while no association was found in women after adjustment. Additionally, anemia may be associated with greater pro-inflammatory diets in Non-Hispanic Whites/Blacks. CONCLUSION In the present study, we evaluate the potential relationship between DII and anemia using data from NHANES. This cross-sectional study confirmed the hypothesis that the higher DII was significantly associated with a higher risk of anemia in the U.S. population.

Abstract
Diet and inflammation are crucial in the incidence and progression of coronary heart disease (CHD). This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the Dietary inflammatory index (DII) and all-cause mortality in CHD patients. A total of 1,303 CHD patients from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2003 and 2018 were included. Multivariate Cox regression was used to explore the correlation between the DII and the risk of all-cause mortality in these patients. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was also utilized to examine the relationship between the DII and all-cause mortality risk in CHD patients. Additionally, subgroup analyses were conducted to determine how the correlation between the DII and all-cause mortality varied across different demographics. During a median follow-up period of 77 months among 1,303 CHD patients, 536 died from all causes. The DII scores were significantly higher in deceased patients compared to survivors. After adjusting for confounding factors, the multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated a strong positive correlation between the DII and all-cause mortality in CHD patients. RCS analysis suggested a non-linear relationship between the DII and all-cause mortality among CHD patients. Additionally, an increase in DII was more pronounced in its impact on female patients. The DII is strongly correlated with the risk of all-cause mortality among CHD patients, particularly among females. Thus, managing dietary inflammation is vital for the prevention and treatment of CHD, especially in female patients.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Over the past 2 decades, the search for dietary factors for developing cancer prevention guidelines has led to a significant expansion in the study of dietary patterns and their relation to cancer. Dietary patterns, which consider the types, amounts, variety, and combination of consumed foods, may encompass additive, synergistic, or interactive effects on human health, compared with individual nutrients or foods. In this review, we discuss the history and methodologies of dietary pattern research, describe common dietary indices used in cancer research, and summarize the existing evidence on dietary patterns and cancer risk. Current evidence supports the beneficial role of dietary patterns that are rich in vegetables, legumes, whole fruit, and whole grains and limited in added sugars, refined grains, processed foods, and red and processed meat in preventing various cancers, including breast, colorectal, and prostate cancers. Additionally, emerging evidence suggests that dietary patterns based on biological mechanisms, such as hyperinsulinemic diet and inflammatory diet, hold promise and may be priority areas for future research.

Abstract
Breast cancer remains a significant contributor to cancer-related deaths among women globally. We seek for this study to examine the correlation between the incidence rates of breast cancer and newly identified risk factors. Additionally, we aim to utilize machine learning models to predict breast cancer incidence at a country level. Following an extensive review of the available literature, we have identified a range of recently studied risk factors associated with breast cancer. Subsequently, we gathered data on these factors and breast cancer incidence rates from numerous online sources encompassing 151 countries. To evaluate the relationship between these factors and breast cancer incidence, we assessed the normality of the data and conducted Spearman's correlation test. Furthermore, we refined six regression models to forecast future breast cancer incidence rates. Our findings indicate that the incidence of breast cancer is most positively correlated with the average age of women in a country, as well as factors such as meat consumption, CO2 emissions, depression, sugar consumption, tobacco use, milk intake, mobile cells, alcohol consumption, pesticides, and oral contraceptive use. As for prediction, the CatBoost Regressor successfully predicted future breast cancer incidence with an R squared value of 0.84 ± 0.03. An increased incidence of breast cancer is mainly associated with dietary habits and lifestyle. Our findings and recommendations can serve as a baseline for developing educational programs intended to heighten awareness amongst women in countries with heightened risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the association between Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) score and death among adults with hyperuricemia. METHODS We collected data from the 2001 to 2018 cohorts of the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey. Death information was obtained based on death certificate records from the National Death Index through December 31, 2019. The associations between DII score and all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer death were investigated by using Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS We enrolled 7,786 participants with hyperuricemia in this study. The DII score ranged from -4.42 to 4.61. Higher DII score was significantly associated with higher levels of body mass index, glycohemoglobin, glucose, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and C-reactive protein (all P < 0.05). During 67,851 person-years of follow-up, deaths of 1,456 participants were identified, including 532 CVD deaths and 246 cancer deaths. After adjusting for potential variables, significant higher risk of all-cause (hazard ratio [HR] 1.18, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.03-1.36, P = 0.01) and CVD (HR 1.30, 95% CI 1.03-1.63, P = 0.02) death was observed for individuals with higher DII scores. Considering the DII score as a continuous variable, the risk of all-cause and CVD death increases 5% (HR 1.05, 95% CI 1.01-1.08) and 8% (HR 1.08, 95% CI 1.02-1.15) with each one-unit increment in DII score, respectively. Subgroup analysis indicated that the association between DII score and all-cause death among participants with hyperuricemia was more significant in males. CONCLUSION DII score is found to be positively associated with all-cause and CVD death of adults with hyperuricemia. Controlling the intake of proinflammatory food might be a potential strategy to reduce the mortality rate.

Abstract
Cancer remains the second leading cause of death globally. Chronic inflammatory environments promote the growth of tumors, and the intake of certain food items can increase systemic inflammation. This study examined the relationship between the inflammatory potential of diet, measured by the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), and recurrence, all-cause, and cancer-specific mortality among cancer survivors. Web of Science, Medline, CINHAL, and PsycINFO databases were searched in April 2022. Two independent reviewers screened all searches. Of the 1,443 studies, 13 studies involving 14,920 cancer survivors passed all the screening stages. Three studies reported cancer recurrence, 12 reported all-cause mortality, and six reported cancer-specific mortality. Seven studies calculated DII from pre-diagnosis diets, five from post-diagnosis diets, and one from both pre-and post-diagnosis diets. A random-effects model meta-analysis showed that high DII was not associated with an increased risk of recurrence (HR = 1.09, 95 % CI = 0.77, 1.54, n = 4) and all-cause (HR = 1.08, 95 % CI = 0.99, 1.19, n = 14) and cancer-specific mortality (H = 1.07, 95 % CI = 0.92, 1.25, n = 6). Analysis by the timing of dietary assessment showed that only post-diagnosis DII was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR = 1.34, 95 % CI = 1.05, 1.72, n = 6) by 34 %; however, cancer type did not modify these associations. The quality of the study assessed using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale indicated all but one studies were good. The risk of all-cause mortality among cancer survivors could be reduced by consuming more anti-inflammatory diets after cancer diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recently, dietary inflammatory index (DII) has been introduced as a significant risk factor for MS. We examined the interaction between dietary inflammatory index and some formerly demonstrated key risk factors of multiple sclerosis (MS). MATERIAL AND METHODS We conducted a population-based incident case-control study of 547 MS cases and 1057 controls. Multiplicative and additive interaction were assessed using interaction term in the logistic regression model and synergy index (SI), respectively. RESULTS Additive interaction was detected between DII and drug abuse (SI = 2.58; 95% CI: 1.14-5.82), gender (SI = 2.00; 95% CI: 1.39-2.87) and history of depression (SI = 1.68; 95% CI: 1.04-2.72) on the risk scale. The risk of MS in drug abusers with DII ≥ 0 was 10.4-times higher than that in non-drug abusers with DII < 0 (OR = 10.4, 95% CI: 5.12-21.02, P < 0.001). We also found that women with DII ≥ 0 had a 9.2 times larger risk compared with the men with DII < 0(OR = 9.2, 95% CI: 6.3-13.5, P < 0.001). Similarly, the risk of MS was remarkably higher in those with a history of depression and DII >0 (OR = 7.6, 95% CI: 5.1-11.5, P < 0.001). There was no evidence of multiplicative interaction between DII and the other risk factors of MS on the risk scale. CONCLUSIONS We identified additive interaction between DII and drug abuse, gender and history of depression on MS. Further studies are needed to understand the underlying mechanisms of these detected interactions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review aimed to investigate the association between dietary inflammatory potential and liver cancer to provide evidence regarding scientific dietary health education. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. SETTING A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify case-control or cohort studies that involved dietary inflammation index (DII)/empirical dietary inflammation pattern (EDIP) and liver cancer in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases. Using a combination of DII/EDIP and liver cancer as the search terms, the associations between DII/EDIP and liver cancer were then assessed. PARTICIPANTS Three case-control studies and two cohort studies were brought into the meta-analysis, with 225 713 enrolled participants. RESULTS Meta-analysis of categorical variables showed that DII/EDIP in the highest category increased the risk of liver cancer compared to DII/EDIP in the lowest category (relative risk (RR) = 2·35; 95 % CI 1·77, 3·13; P = 0·000) and with low heterogeneity across studies (I2 = 40·8 %, P = 0·119). Meta-analysis of continuous variables showed that significant positive association between liver cancer and DII/EDIP scores (RR = 1·24; 95 % CI 1·09, 1·40; P = 0·001), and no heterogeneity (I² = 0·0 %, P = 0·471). Stratified according to the study design, there was a significant positive association between liver cancer and DII/EDIP scores in both cohort studies (RR = 2·16; 95 % CI 1·51, 3·07; P = 0·000) and case-control studies (RR = 2·75; 95 % CI 1·71, 4·41; P = 0·000). CONCLUSION The higher the DII/EDIP score, the higher the risk of liver cancer. This finding may have prominent implications for the general population.

Abstract
Background In the general population of the United States (U.S.), the relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and mortality (all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related, and cancer-related) is still unclear. Therefore, in this research, we examined the association of DII with mortality caused by all-cause, CVD-related, and cancer-related causes. Methods Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999-2018 was used for exploring the link between DII and all-cause, CVD-related, and cancer-related mortality through the use of Cox proportional hazard models and restricted cubic spline model. In addition, subgroup analyses were further performed. Results The study included 29,013 individuals from the NHANES from 1999 to 2018. The DII scores were nominated as low (T1: -5.281-0.724), medium (T2: 0.725-2.513), and high-grade inflammation (T3: 2.514-5.795), with T1 serving as the reference group. The linear positive correlation between DII and all-cause and CVD-related mortality was studied using Cox regression analysis. In the full-adjusted model, as compared with the individuals with T1 DII scores, adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals for all-cause and CVD-related mortality were 1.149 (1.059, 1.247), and 1.186 (1.084, 1.297), as well as 1.197 (1.032, 1.387), and 1.198 (1.019, 1.409), respectively. However, there was no statistical significance between DII and cancer-related mortality. The RCS plot also showed a significant increase in all-cause and CVD-related mortality with increased DII. Nevertheless, as DII scores increased, cancer-related mortality first increased and then decreased. Conclusion All-cause and CVD-related mortality are linked independently to high DII scores, independently. Further study of the association of DII scores with mortality caused by all-cause, CVD-related, and cancer-related causes is necessary to explore.

Abstract
Background Dietary inflammatory index (DII) has been suggested to be associated with oral cancer risk. However, a quantitative comprehensive assessment of the dose–response relationship has not been reported. We performed a meta-analysis to clarify the risk of oral cancer with DII. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases for relevant articles published up to 1 March 2022. Fixed- or random-effects models were utilized to estimate the pooled odds ratio (OR) of oral cancer with DII, as appropriate. Restricted cubic splines were used to model the dose–response relationship. Results We included five case–control studies involving 1,278 cases and 5,137 controls in the meta-analysis. Risk of oral cancer was increased by 135% with the highest versus lowest DII level [OR: 2.35, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.88–2.94], and 79% with higher versus lower DII level (OR: 1.79, 95% CI: 1.49–2.15). We found no evidence of a nonlinear dose–response association of DII with oral cancer (pnon-linearity = 0.752), and the risk was increased by 17% (OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.05–1.30) with 1 unit increment in DII score. Conclusion This meta-analysis suggested that a higher DII score was associated with increased risk of oral cancer. Therefore, reducing pro-inflammatory components and promoting anti-inflammatory components of diet may be effective in the prevention of oral cancer.

Dietary inflammatory index and breast cancer risk: an updated meta-analysis of observational studies. Eur J Clin Nutr 2022; 76:1073-1087. Abstract
This updated meta-analysis sought to determine whether the pro-inflammatory potential of diet is a risk factor for breast cancer (BrCa) development, for the first time focusing on the effects of design heterogeneity. The search was performed using Scopus, PubMed, and Embase databases. Data were extracted from twenty-one eligible studies, including eleven cohorts (336,085 participants/20,033 incidence cases), and ten case-control studies (9,833 cases/12,752controls). The random-effect was used to calculate the relative risk (RR) using STATA 16 software. The highest dietary inflammatory index (DII) vs. the lowest category showed 16% increased risk of BrCa (95% CI: 1.06-1.26; I2 = 62.8%, P (I2) < 0.001). This was notable in post-menopausal status (RR = 1.13, 95% CI: 1.04-1.22), women with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2 (RR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.07-1.63), and study populations from developing countries (RR = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.12-2.47). Methodological covariates were subject to subgroup meta-analyses and showed stronger results among case-control studies (RR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.20-1.80), studies considered age-matched controls (RR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.19-1.93) and hospital-based controls (RR = 2.11, 95% CI: 1.58-2.64), and cohort studies identified by prolong follow-up durations (RR = 1.13, 95% CI: 1.03-1.22). This updated meta-analysis highlighted the pro-inflammatory diet as a risk factor for BrCa, especially among women in post-menopausal status, obese groups, and developing countries. Meta-analysis in methodological subgroups could improve results, less affected by heterogeneity, and suggested subclassification with important implications for future epidemiological designs and even clinical management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study explored the association between diet-associated inflammation and the risk of different molecular subtypes of breast cancer (BrCA) in a large, population-based case-control study conducted in northwestern Iran. METHODS The study consisted of 1007 women with histopathologically confirmed BrCA and 1004 controls admitted to hospitals in Tabriz, northwestern Iran, for nonneoplastic conditions. Dietary Inflammatory Index scores and energy-adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DII) scores, with and without supplements, were computed on the basis of dietary intake collected using a validated 136-item food frequency questionnaire. RESULTS Women with the highest E-DII scores (quartile 4) versus those with the lowest E-DII scores (quartile 1) showed a significantly increased BrCA risk (odds ratio for quartile 4 vs quartile 1 [ORQ4vsQ1 ], 1.87; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.42-2.47), particularly for lobular carcinoma (ORQ4vsQ1 , 3.07; 95% CI, 1.34-7.02). Findings were similar for premenopausal women diagnosed with luminal A BrCA (ORQ4vsQ1 , 2.71; 95% CI, 1.74-4.22) or luminal B BrCA (ORQ4vsQ1 , 2.86; 95% CI, 1.39-5.89). Women consuming the most proinflammatory diets were 3 times more likely to have triple-negative BrCA (ORQ4vsQ1 , 3.00; 95% CI, 1.002-8.96) while compared to luminal A BrCA. The BrCA risk for women consuming diets in the highest half of E-DII scores (E-DII > 0) was 59% greater than the risk for those in the lowest half (95% CI, 1.29-1.97). Also, higher E-DII scores that took into account supplements were associated with larger tumor sizes (T3 > 5 cm; P < .05). CONCLUSIONS A proinflammatory diet, as indicated by higher E-DII scores, appears to increase the risk of BrCA in Iranian women. Large increases in risk were seen in invasive molecular subtypes of BrCA. Anti-inflammatory diets are suggested to prevent the risk of overall BrCA and more aggressive forms of BrCA in particular.
