Baicalin promotes the bacteriostatic activity of lysozyme on S. aureus in mammary glands and neutrophilic granulocytes in mice

Dietary anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial medicinal plants and its compounds in bovine mastitis associated impact on human life

Bovine mastitis (BM) is the most common bacterial mediated inflammatory disease in the dairy cattle that causes huge economic loss to the dairy industry due to decreased milk quality and quantity. Milk is the essential food in the human diet, and rich in crucial nutrients that helps in lowering the risk of diseases like hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. The main causative agents of the disease include various gram negative, and positive bacteria, along with other risk factors such as udder shape, age, genetic, and environmental factors also contributes much for the disease. Currently, antibiotics, immunotherapy, probiotics, dry cow, and lactation therapy are commonly recommended for BM. However, these treatments can only decrease the rise of new cases but can't eliminate the causative agents, and they also exhibit several limitations. Hence, there is an urgent need of a potential source that can generate a typical and ideal treatment to overcome the limitations and eliminate the pathogens. Among the various sources, medicinal plants and its derived products always play a significant role in drug discovery against several diseases. In addition, they are also known for its low toxicity and minimum resistance features. Therefore, plants and its compounds that possess anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties can serve better in bovine mastitis. In addition, the plants that are serving as a food source and possessing pharmacological properties can act even better in bovine mastitis. Hence, in this evidence-based study, we particularly review the dietary medicinal plants and derived products that are proven for anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. Moreover, the role of each dietary plant and its compounds along with possible role in the management of bovine mastitis are delineated. In this way, this article serves as a standalone source for the researchers working in this area to help in the management of BM.

Flavonoids, gut microbiota, and host lipid metabolism

Flavonoids are widely distributed in nature and have a variety of beneficial biological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity effects. All of these are related to gut microbiota, and flavonoids also serve as a bridge between the host and gut microbiota. Flavonoids are commonly used to modify the composition of the gut microbiota by promoting or inhibiting specific microbial species within the gut, as well as modifying their metabolites. In turn, the gut microbiota extensively metabolizes flavonoids. Hence, this reciprocal relationship between flavonoids and the gut microbiota may play a crucial role in maintaining the balance and functionality of the metabolism system. In this review, we mainly highlighted the biological effects of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiobesity, and discussed the interaction between flavonoids, gut microbiota and lipid metabolism, and elaborated the potential mechanisms on host lipid metabolism.

Potential therapeutic effects of baicalin and baicalein

Objective

Baicalin and baicalein are natural flavonoids reported for the first time from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. Recently, attention has been paid to these valuable flavonoids due to their promising effects. This paper aims to have a comprehensive review of their pharmacological effects.

Materials and Methods

An extensive search through scientific databases including Scopus, PubMed, and ISI Web of Science was established.

Results

According to literature, these compounds have been mainly effective in the treatment of neurological and neurodegenerative diseases, hepatic and cardiovascular disorders, metabolic syndrome, and cancers through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant pathways. Induction of apoptosis and autophagy, and inhibition of migration and metastasis are the main mechanisms for their cytotoxic and antitumor activities. Decreasing inflammation, reducing oxidative stress, regulating the metabolism of lipids, and decreasing fibrosis, apoptosis, and steatosis are their main hepatoprotective mechanisms. Inhibiting the development of cardiac fibrosis and reducing inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis are also the mechanisms suggested for cardioprotective activities. Decreasing the accumulation of inflammatory mediators and improving cognitive function and depressive-like behaviours are the main mechanisms for neurological and neurodegenerative activities.

Conclusion

The findings suggest the therapeutic potential of baicalin and baicalein. However, complementary research in different in vitro and in vivo models to investigate their mechanisms of action as well as clinical trials to evaluate their efficacy and safety are suggested.

Revealing the Second and the Third Causes of AgNPs Property to Restore the Bacterial Susceptibility to Antibiotics

The increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a global problem for public health. In our previous works, it was shown that the application of AgNPs in cow mastitis treatment increased S. aureus and S. dysgalactiae susceptibility to 31 antibiotics due to a decrease in the bacterial efflux effect. The aim of the present work was to shed light on whether the change in adhesive and anti-lysozyme activities caused by AgNPs also contribute to the restoration of bacterial susceptibility to antibiotics. In vivo sampling was performed before and after cow mastitis treatments with antibiotics or AgNPs. The isolates were identified, and the adhesive and anti-lysozyme activities were assessed. These data were compared with the results obtained for in vitro pre-treatment of reference bacteria with AgNPs or antibiotics. The present study revealed that bacterial treatments in vitro and in vivo with AgNPs: (1) decrease the bacterial ability to adhere to cells to start an infection and (2) decrease bacterial anti-lysozyme activity, thereby enhancing the activity of lysozyme, a natural "antibiotic" present in living organisms. The obtained data contribute to the perspective of the future application of AgNPs for recovering the activity of antibiotics rapidly disappearing from the market.

Gegen Qinlian decoction restores the intestinal barrier in bacterial diarrhea piglets by promoting Lactobacillus growth and inhibiting the TLR2/MyD88/NF-κB pathway

Acute bacterial diarrhea is a severe global problem with a particularly high incidence rate in children. The microecology inhabiting the intestinal mucosa is the key factor leading to diarrhea. Gegen Qinlian decoction (GQD) is used to treat bacterial diarrhea, however, its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to clarify the restorative effect of GQD on the intestinal barrier from the perspective of gut microbiota. A Tibetan piglet model with bacterial diarrhea was established through orally administered Escherichia coli, and diarrheal piglets were treated with GQD for three days. After treatment, GQD significantly ameliorated the diarrheal symptoms. GQD decreased the levels of IL-6, LPS, and DAO, and increased SIgA, ZO-1, and occludin levels in intestinal mucosa, indicating the restoration of intestinal barrier. GQD modulated the microbial compositions inhabited on the intestinal mucosa, especially an increase of the Lactobacillus. Spearman analysis showed that Lactobacillus was the key genus of intestinal barrier-related bacteria. Bacterial culture in vitro validated that GQD directly promoted Lactobacillus growth and inhibited E. coli proliferation. Moreover, the expressions of TLR2, MyD88, and NF-κB in the colon decreased after GQD treatment. In conclusion, GQD may treat diarrhea and restore the intestinal mucosal barrier by facilitating Lactobacillus growth and inhibiting the TLR2/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway.

Scutellarin protects cortical neurons against neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy injury via upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (NHIE) causes devastating cerebral damage and neurological deficits that seldom have effective therapies. This study aimed to explore the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic efficacy of Scutellarin in NHIE. NHIE models were successfully established. Zea-longa score and triphenyte-trazoliumchloride (TTC) staining demonstrated that hypoxia and ischemia (HI) insult induced prominent neurological dysfunctions and brain infarction. Protein microarray was applied to detect the differentially expressed genes in the cortex, hippocampus, and lung tissues of HI rats, which revealed the downregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in these tissues. Additionally, double immunostaining uncovered VEGF expression was localized in the neurons. Besides, VEGF was decreasingly expressed in oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) neurons, which was intriguingly reversed by Scutellarin treatment. Moreover, VEGF silencing increased OGD-induced neuronal apoptosis and attenuated neurite outgrowth, which was enhanced by Scutellarin administration. GeneMANIA predicted a close correlation of VEGF with caspase 3, caspase 7, and interleukin (IL)-1β, and qRT-PCR revealed that Scutellarin treatment depressed the expression levels of them elevated in OGD neurons, but the Scutellarin-depressed levels of these factors were prominently increased after VEGF silencing. Our findings suggested that Scutellarin exerted neuroprotective effects in NHIE potentially through mediating VEGF-targeted inactivation of caspase 3, caspase 7, and IL-1β.

The Deletion of IL-17A Enhances Helicobacter hepaticus Colonization and Triggers Colitis

Objective

IL-17 is a key regulator of the inflammatory response, and as such, it is involved in the constraint and clearance of pathogens. The mechanism of IL-17 in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) caused by microbial infection is still unclear. Helicobacter hepaticus infection can induce colitis in many mouse strains, and thus, it has been widely used in the study of IBD pathogenesis.

Methods

In this study, male C57BL/6, BALB/c, Il-10^−/−, and Il-17a^−/− mice were infected with H. hepaticus for several weeks. Histopathology, H. hepaticus colonization and distribution, expression of inflammatory cytokines and lysozyme, and distribution of mucus in proximal colon were examined.

Results

The colonic colonization of H. hepaticus was abnormally high in Il-17a^−/− mice. H. hepaticus infection caused only mild to moderate colitis symptoms in Il-17a^−/− mice, including low levels of lymphocyte infiltration, epithelial cell defects, goblet cell reduction, and crypt atrophy without obvious hyperplasia in the later stage of infection. Furthermore, many inflammatory genes were significantly increased in the proximal colon of H. hepaticus-infected Il-17a^−/− mice compared with C57BL/6 mice. In addition, the reduction of colonic mucus and the down-regulation of ZO-1, Claudin-1, and IL-22 were observed in Il-17a^−/− mice compared with C57BL/6 mice post H. hepaticus infection.

Conclusion

These results demonstrated that the deletion of IL-17A impaired the integrity of the intestinal epithelium, weakened the secretion of mucus, attenuated colonic mucosal regeneration, reduced the ability to resist microbial infection, and finally led to colitis caused by H. hepaticus.

Novel Micro-Nano Optoelectronic Biosensor for Label-Free Real-Time Biofilm Monitoring

According to the World Health Organization forecasts, AntiMicrobial Resistance (AMR) is expected to become one of the leading causes of death worldwide in the following decades. The rising danger of AMR is caused by the overuse of antibiotics, which are becoming ineffective against many pathogens, particularly in the presence of bacterial biofilms. In this context, non-destructive label-free techniques for the real-time study of the biofilm generation and maturation, together with the analysis of the efficiency of antibiotics, are in high demand. Here, we propose the design of a novel optoelectronic device based on a dual array of interdigitated micro- and nanoelectrodes in parallel, aiming at monitoring the bacterial biofilm evolution by using optical and electrical measurements. The optical response given by the nanostructure, based on the Guided Mode Resonance effect with a Q-factor of about 400 and normalized resonance amplitude of about 0.8, allows high spatial resolution for the analysis of the interaction between planktonic bacteria distributed in small colonies and their role in the biofilm generation, calculating a resonance wavelength shift variation of 0.9 nm in the presence of bacteria on the surface, while the electrical response with both micro- and nanoelectrodes is necessary for the study of the metabolic state of the bacteria to reveal the efficacy of antibiotics for the destruction of the biofilm, measuring a current change of 330 nA when a 15 µm thick biofilm is destroyed with respect to the absence of biofilm.

The effect of hesperidin, chrysin, and naringenin on the number of somatic cell count in mastitis in dairy cows after multiple intramammary administration

Hesperidin (HE), chrysin (CH) and naringenin (NA) are flavonoids, being the most important group of polyphenols, and show anti-inflammatory properties which have been demonstrated on various models. Polyphenols have a lot of biological properties, such as antioxidative, antiviral, immunomodulatory and anticancer activities. However, the effect on mastitis has not been yet described. This research aimed to analyze the tolerability of selected polyphenols after multiple intramammary administrations (IMM) as well as to investigate their potential impact on somatic cell count (SCC) in mastitis dairy cows. The study was performed on 12 Polish Holstein Black-White cows in their 4th – to 6th lactation. Only animals with inflammation in one-quarter of the udder were selected. The selection was based on SCC and clinical assessment. The experiment was performed with multiple IMM administrations with each of these polyphenols in dairy cows affected with mastitis. Polyphenols were administered at a dose of 30 mg/quarter/day. Milk samples for SCC, blood plasma samples for pharmacokinetics and blood hematology and biochemistry (selected blood parameters were tested) were collected at baseline, treatment period and within the recovery period. Positive effects concerning the number of SCC in milk of mastitic cows were confirmed for all tested polyphenols.

Scutellaria baicalensis Extract-Phospholipid Complex: Preparation and Initial Pharmacodynamics Research in Rats

Background

Baicalin, a flavonoid glycoside compound present in Scutellaria baicalensis, has shown a wide spectrum of biological activities, but its liposolubility, water-solubility and mucosal permeability are all very poor, which leads to the low concentration in brain and poor bioavailability by oral or intravenous injective administration.

Objectives

The primary objective of this study was to formulate the Scutellaria baicalensis extract (SBE) with phospholipid to yield Scutellaria baicalensis extract-phospholipid complex (SBEPC), and to evaluate its pharmacodynamics in the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO).

Methods

The optimal preparation technology of SBEPC was obtained through single-factor test and central composite design-response surface methodology (CCD-RSM), and was characterized with various analytical techniques including SEM, FT-IR and NMR. The storage conditions of SBEPC were established through stability study and the MCAO rat model was investigated through conducting pharmacodynamic studies to screen the appropriate administration and dose of SBEPC as well as to verify the neuroprotective effect of SBEPC on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Results

The optimized preparation conditions of SBEPC were summarized as follows: the ratio of phospholipids to drug was 2:1, the drug concentration was 3.5 mg/ml, the reaction temperature was 50 °C, and the entrapment efficiency was over 93.00%. Stability studies have demonstrated that SBEPC should be stored under 40 °C in a dry and ventilated place away from light and below 37% humidity. Furthermore, pharmacodynamic studies have found that, compared with SBE, SBEPC could introduce drugs into the brain and better exert the neuroprotective effect on MCAO rats, and the optimal administration and dose concentration of SBEPC were nasal administration and 40 mg/ml, respectively.

Conclusion

These findings demonstrate that SBEPC is successfully prepared by CCD-RSM. SBEPC can enhance drugs' ability to enter the brain and improve the bioavailability of drugs in brain, and can effectively exert the neuroprotective effect on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury as compared with SBE.

Baicalin decreases somatic cell count in mastitis of dairy cows

Baicalin is a flavonoid that has an influence on molecular processes. It possesses anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antioxidative, and antithrombotic properties. It was found that baicalein treatment attenuated the damage of the mammary gland induced by LPS, suppressed the activity of myeloperoxidase, TNFα, and IL-1β in mice with mastitis. The aim of the study was a pilot analysis of baicalin tolerability after intramammary (IMM) administration and its impact on somatic cell count (SCC) after multiple IMM treatment on dairy cows with clinical mastitis. Moreover, the determination of baicalin in milk was performed by the sensitive ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. The pharmacokinetic analyses were performed using Phoenix® WinNonlin® 6.4 and ThothPro v 4.1 software. Twelve dairy cows with clinical mastitis were selected for this study. The pharmacodynamic endpoint was SCC level and the clinical investigation was also carried out. Baseline SCC analysis was performed every 24 h among all cows three days before the first dose (B1–B3). After the baseline monitoring, 8 days of treatment (T1–T8) was performed and 8 days within recovery period SCC level was observed (R1–R8). Starting from T1 to T8, a decrease of SCC in relation to baseline was characterized by a declining trend. The presented results confirm the effect of baicalin on the reduction of SCC in mastitis in dairy cows after this therapy. The current study has shown that baicalin accumulation was not confirmed.

Baicalin Liposome Alleviates Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Acute Lung Injury in Mice via Inhibiting TLR4/JNK/ERK/NF-κB Pathway

Acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are challenging diseases with the high mortality in a clinical setting. Baicalin (BA) is the main effective constituent isolated from the Chinese medical herb Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, and studies have proved that it has a protective effect on ALI induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) due to the anti-inflammatory efficacy. However, BA has low solubility which may limit its clinical application. Hence, we prepared a novel drug delivery system—Baicalin liposome (BA-LP) in previous research—which can improve some physical properties of BA. Therefore, we aimed to explore the effect of BA-LP on ALI mice induced by LPS. In pharmacokinetics study, the values of t_1/2 and AUC_0-t in the BA-LP group were significantly higher than that of the BA group in normal mice, indicating that BA-LP could prolong the duration time in vivo of BA. The BA-LP group also showed a higher concentration in lung tissues than the BA group. Pharmacodynamics studies showed that BA-LP had a better effect than the BA group at the same dosage on reducing the W/D ratio, alleviating the lung injury score, and decreasing the proinflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-1β) and total proteins in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALF). In addition, the therapeutic effects of BA-LP showed a dose-dependent manner. Western blot analysis indicated that the anti-inflammatory action of BA could be attributed to the inhibition of the TLR4-NFκBp65 and JNK-ERK signaling pathways. These results suggest that BA-LP could be a valuable therapeutic candidate in the treatment of ALI.

Changes in the host transcriptome and microbial metatranscriptome of the ileum of dairy calves subjected to artificial dosing of exogenous rumen contents

Development of a properly functioning gastrointestinal tract (GIT) at an early age is critical for the wellbeing and lifetime productivity of dairy cattle. The role of early microbial colonization on GIT development in neonatal cattle and the associated molecular changes remain largely unknown, particularly for the small intestine. In this study, we performed artificial dosing of exogenous rumen fluid during the early life of the calf, starting at birth through the weaning transition at 8 wk. Six calves were included in this study. At 8 wk of age, tissue from the ileum was collected and subjected to host transcriptome and microbial metatranscriptome analysis using RNA sequencing. A total of 333 genes showed significant differential expression (DE) (fold-change ≥2; adjusted P < 0.1, mean read-count ≥10) between the treated and control calves. Gene ontology analysis indicated that these DE genes are predominantly associated with processes related to the host immune response (P < 0.0001). Association analysis between the host gene expression and the microbial genus abundance identified 57 genes as having significant correlation with the ileum microbial genera (P < 0.0001). Of these, three genes showed significant association with six microbial genera: lysozyme 2 (LYZ2), fatty acid binding protein 5 (FABP5), and fucosyltransferase (FUT1). Specifically, the profound increase in expression of LYZ2 in treated calves suggests the initiation of antibacterial activity and innate response from the host. Despite the limitation of a relatively small sample size, this study sheds light on the potential impact of early introduction of microbes on the small intestine of calves.

Natural Products That Target Virulence Factors in Antibiotic-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

The increase in the incidence of antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) associated infections necessitates the urgent development of novel therapeutic strategies and antibacterial drugs. Antivirulence strategy is an especially compelling alternative strategy due to its low selective pressure for the development of drug resistance in bacteria. Plants and microorganisms are not only important food and medicinal resources but also serve as sources for the discovery of natural products that target bacterial virulence factors. This review discusses the mechanisms of the major virulence factors of S. aureus, including the accessory gene regulator quorum-sensing system, bacterial biofilm formation, α-hemolysin, sortase A, and staphyloxanthin. We also provide an overview of natural products isolated from plants and microorganisms with activity against the major virulence factors of S. aureus and their adjuvant effects on existing antibiotics to overcome antibiotic-resistant S. aureus. Finally, the limitations and solutions of these antivirulence compounds are discussed, which will help in the development of novel antibacterial drugs against antibiotic-resistant S. aureus.

Baicalin attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced neuroinflammation in cerebral cortex of mice via inhibiting nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation

Baicalin is a plant-derived flavonoid that has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects. We investigated an anti-inflammatory effect of baicalin against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced damage in cerebral cortex. Adult mice were divided into control, LPS-treated, and LPS and baicalin co-treated animals. LPS (250 µg/kg/day) and baicalin (10 mg/kg/day) were intraperitoneally injected for 7 days. LPS treatment induced histopathological changes in cerebral cortex, whereas baicalin protected neuronal cells against LPS toxicity. Moreover, baicalin treatment attenuated LPS-induced increases of reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress in cerebral cortices. Ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule-1 (Iba-1) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) are known as markers of activated microglia and astrocyte, respectively. Results of Western blot and immunofluorescence staining showed that LPS exposure induces increases of Iba-1 and GFAP expressions, whereas baicalin alleviates LPS-induced increases of these proteins. Baicalin also prevented LPS-induced increase of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). LPS treatment led to increases of pro-inflammatory factors including interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Increases of these pro-inflammatory mediators were attenuated in baicalin co-treated animals. These results demonstrated that baicalin regulates neuroglia activation and modulates inflammatory factors in LPS-induced neuronal injury. Thus, our findings suggest that baicalin exerts a neuroinflammatory effect against LPS-induced toxicity through decreasing oxidative stress and inhibiting NF-κB mediated inflammatory factors, such as IL-1β and TNF-α.

Modulation of Autophagy for Controlling Immunity

Autophagy is an essential process that maintains physiological homeostasis by promoting the transfer of cytoplasmic constituents to autophagolysosomes for degradation. In immune cells, the autophagy pathway plays an additional role in facilitating proper immunological functions. Specifically, the autophagy pathway can participate in controlling key steps in innate and adaptive immunity. Accordingly, alterations in autophagy have been linked to inflammatory diseases and defective immune responses against pathogens. In this review, we discuss the various roles of autophagy signaling in coordinating immune responses and how these activities are connected to pathological conditions. We highlight the therapeutic potential of autophagy modulators that can impact immune responses and the mechanisms of action responsible.

Dietary Lysozyme Alters Sow's Gut Microbiota, Serum Immunity and Milk Metabolite Profile

The aim of current study was to determine variations in sow's gut microbiota, serum immunity, and milk metabolite profile mediated by lysozyme supplementation. Twenty-four pregnant sows were assigned to a control group without supplementation and two treatments with 0.5 kg/t and 1.0 kg/t lysozyme provided in formula feed for 21 days (n = 8 per treatment). Microbiota analysis and metagenomic predictions were based on 16s RNA high-throughput sequencing. Milk metabolome was assessed by untargeted liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Serum biochemical indicators and immunoglobulins were also determined. Gut microbial diversity of sows receiving 1.0 kg/t lysozyme treatment was significantly reduced after the trial. Spirochaetes, Euryarchaeota, and Actinobacteria significantly increased while Firmicutes showed a remarkable reduction in 1.0 kg/t group compared with control. Lysozyme addition rebuilt sow's gut microbiota to beneficial composition identified by reduced richness of Escherichia coli and increased abundance of Lactobacillus amylovorus. Accordingly, microbial metabolic functions including pyrimidine metabolism, purine metabolism, and amino acid related enzymes were significantly up-regulated in 1.0 kg/t group. Microbial metabolic phenotypes like the richness of Gram-positive bacteria and oxidative stress tolerance were also significantly reduced by lysozyme treatment. Serum alanine transaminase (ALT) activity and IgA levels were significantly down-regulated in the 1.0 kg/t group compared with control, but IgM levels showed a significantly increase in 1.0 kg/t group. Milk metabolites such as L-glutamine, creatine, and L-arginine showed significantly dose-dependent changes after treatment. Overall, lysozyme supplementation could effectively improve the composition, metabolic functions, and phenotypes of sow's gut microbiota and it also benefit sows with better serum immunity and milk composition. This research could provide theoretical support for further application of lysozyme in promoting animal gut health and prevent pathogenic infections in livestock production.

Selenium suppresses inflammation by inducing microRNA-146a in Staphylococcus aureus-infected mouse mastitis model

We studied the effects of selenium (Se) on the inflammatory response in Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)-infected mastitis-model mice and mammary epithelial cells. In infected mice, Se elicited a dose-dependent decrease in mammary gland pathology that included inflammatory cell infiltration, disorganized acinar structure and mammary cell necrosis. Se decreased inflammation by increasing miR-146a and decreasing TLR2/6 as well as NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways in mammary tissue from infected mice and mammary epithelial cells. A miR-146a inhibitor suppressed the anti-inflammatory effects of Se in infected mammary epithelial cells. Se, miR-146a and TLR2 were associated in determining the inflammatory response in mouse with infection-induced mastitis. Thus, Se inhibits pro-inflammatory responses in mammary tissues from S. aureus-infected mice by inducing miR-146a.
