Determination of some trace metals by FAAS after solid-phase extraction with amberlite XAD-1180/TAN chelating resin

Determination of some heavy metals from aqueous solutions using modified Amberlite XAD-4 resin by selective solid-phase extraction

The adsorption efficiency of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions on m-phenylenediamine-modified Amberlite XAD-4 resin was investigated. The effects of pH, adsorbent amount, initial metal concentration, eluent type and volume and flow rate on the retention of the metal ions have been studied on column studies. The optimum parameters were determined as pH 5, concentration 10 mg/L, stirring time 30 min and 0.2 g adsorbent amount and flow rate 2.5 mL/min for a quantitative adsorption. Sorption data were interpreted in terms of Langmuir and Freundlich equations, and both models were found to be fully appropriate. Each column can be used up to 10 sequential analyses without considerable change. The results indicate high metal adsorption capacity and satisfactory recovery of Pb(II) and Cd(II).

Synthesis of ion-imprinted polymer-decorated SBA-15 as a selective and efficient system for the removal and extraction of Cu(ii) with focus on optimization by response surface methodology

Ion-imprinted polymer-decorated SBA-15 (SBA-15-IIP) for the adsorption of copper was synthesized and characterized using different techniques, including FT-IR, XRD, TG/DTA, SEM, BET, and TEM.

Novel Imprinted Polymer for the Preconcentration of Cadmium with Determination by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

A novel Cd(II)-imprinted polymer was prepared with chemical immobilization approach by using N-methacryloyl-L-histidine as a vinylated chelating agent for on-line solid phase extraction of Cd(II) for determination by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Cd(II)-monomer complex was synthesized and copolymerized via bulk polymerization method in the presence of ethyleneglycoldimethacrylate cross-linker. The resulting polymer was leached with 1.0 mol L^-1 HNO₃ to generate the cavities in the polymer for Cd(II) ions. The experimental conditions, including load pH, solution flow rate, and eluent concentration for effective sorption of Cd(II) were optimized using a minicolumn of the imprinted polymer. A volume of 5.0 mL sample 5 μg L^-1 Cd(II) solution at pH 6.5 was loaded onto the column at 2.0 mL min^-1 by using a sequential injection system (FIALab 3200) followed by elution with 1.0 mL of 0.75 mol L^-1 HNO₃. The relative selectivity coefficients of the imprinted polymer for Cd(II) were 38.5, 3.5, 3.0, 2.5 and 6.0 in the presence of Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Co(II) and Pb(II), respectively. Computational calculations revealed that the selectivity of the imprinted polymer was mediated by the stability of Cd(II)-N-methacryloyl-L-histidine complex which was far more stable than those of commonly used monomers, such as 4-vinyl pyridine, methacrylic acid and vinylimidazole. The detection limit (3s) and relative standard deviation (%) were found to be 0.004 μg L^-1 and 3.2%, respectively. The method was validated by analysis of seawater certified reference material (CASS-4) and successfully applied to the determination of Cd(II) in coastal seawater and estuarine water samples.

A new coprecipitation method without carrier element for separation and preconcentration of some metal ions at trace levels in water and food samples

A new simple and sensitive preconcentration, separation and environmentally friendly method based on carrier element free coprecipitation (CEFC) was developed using 4-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)-1,2-dihydro-2,3-dimethyl-1-phenylpyrazol-5-one (APSAL) as a new organic co-precipitant to precipitate Cr(3+), Cu(2+), Fe(3+), Pb(2+) and Zn(2+) ions from water and food samples. The levels of the studied elements were detected by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The impact of several analytical parameters, such as pH, sample volume and coprecipitant amount as well as centrifugation rate and time was investigated to recover the examined metal ions. The influence of matrix ions was also tested, and no interferences were observed. The recovery values of the analyte ions were calculated and found to be in the range of 95-101%. The detection limits, corresponding to three times the standard deviation of the blank (N=10), were found to be in the range of 0.2-1.2 μg L(-1). The relative standard deviation (RSD) was calculated to evaluate the precision of the proposed method and was found to be ≤5.0%. The calculated preconcentration factor was 100. The proposed method was successfully applied to separate and preconcentrate trace amounts of ions in several water and food samples. To confirm the accuracy and validate the proposed method, certified reference materials were analyzed with satisfactory results.

New generation Amberlite XAD resin for the removal of metal ions: A review

The direct determination of toxic metal ions, in environmental samples, is difficult because of the latter's presence in trace concentration in association with complex matrices, thereby leading to insufficient sensitivity and selectivity of the methods used. The simultaneous removal of the matrix and preconcentration of the metal ions, through solid phase extraction, serves as the promising solution. The mechanism involved in solid phase extraction (SPE) depends on the nature of the sorbent and analyte. Thus, SPE is carried out by means of adsorption, ion exchange, chelation, ion pair formation, and so forth. As polymeric supports, the commercially available Amberlite resins have been found very promising for designing chelating matrices due to its good physical and chemical properties such as porosity, high surface area, durability and purity. This review presents an overview of the various works done on the modification of Amberlite XAD resins with the objective of making it an efficient sorbent. The methods of modifications which are generally based on simple impregnation, sorption as chelates and chemical bonding have been discussed. The reported results, including the preconcentration limit, the detection limit, sorption capacity, preconcentration factors etc., have been reproduced.

MULTIELEMENT SOLID PHASE PRECONCENTRATION USING A CHELATING RESIN OF STYRENE DIVINYLBENZENE COPOLYMER AND APPLICATION TO ANALYSIS OF SEAWATER AND FISH OTOLITHS BY INDUCTIVELY COUPLED PLASMA MASS SPECTROMETRY (ICP�MS)

A new chelating resin has been synthesized by immobilizing 4-(2-thiazolylazo) resorcinol (TAR) onto styrene divinlybenzene copolymer and examined for on-line solid phase extraction/preconcentration of Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in seawater and fish otoliths for determination by inductively plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A volume of 5.0 mL sample solution was loaded onto the mini column of TAR immobilized resin at 2.0 mL min-1 via a sequential injection system. The optimum pH for multielement preconcentration was around pH 5.5. Recoveries were better than 96% in artificial seawater. Elution was achieved with 1.0 mL of 0.75 mol L-1 HNO3. The resin possesses large sorption capacity ranging from 82.0 µmol g-1 for Pb to 319 µmol g-1 for Cu. The detection limits (3s) varied between 0.0016 µg L-1 (Cd) and to 0.015 µg L-1 (Zn) for preconcentration of 5.0 mL blank solutions (pH 5.5). Relative standard deviation (RSD)for three replicate runs was between 0.3% (Cd) and 6% (Zn) at 1.0 µg L-1 level. The procedure was validated by analysis of Nearshore Seawater certified reference material (CASS-4), and then successfully applied to the determination of the trace elements in fish otoliths (CRM 22) and in coastal seawater and estuarine water samples.

Selective solid phase extraction of copper using a new Cu(II)-imprinted polymer and determination by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES)

This work reports the preparation of a novel Cu(II)-ion imprinted polymer using 2-thiozylmethacrylamide (TMA) for on-line preconcentration of Cu(II) prior to its determination by inductively coupled optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Cu(II)-TMA monomer (complex) was synthesized and copolymerized via bulk polymerization method in the presence of ethyleneglycoldimethacrylate cross-linker. The resulting polymer was washed with 5% (v/v) HNO₃ to remove Cu(II) ions and then with water until a neutral pH. The ion imprinted polymer was characterized by FT-IR and scanning electron microscopy. The experimental conditions were optimized for on-line preconcentration of Cu(II) using a minicolumn of ion imprinted polymer (IIP). Quantitative retention was achieved between pH 5.0 and 6.0, whereas the recoveries for the non-imprinted polymer (NIP) were about 61%. The IIP showed about 30 times higher selectivity to Cu(II) in comparison to NIP. The IIP also exhibited excellent selectivity for Cu(II) against the competing transition and heavy metal ions, including Cd, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. Computational calculations revealed that the selectivity of IIP was mediated by the stability of Cu(II)-TMA complex which was far more stable than those of Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) that have similar charge and ionic radii to Cu(II). A volume of 10 mL sample solution was loaded onto the column at 4.0 mL min^-1 by using a sequential injection system (FIALab 3200) followed by elution with 1.0 mL of 2% (v/v) HNO₃. The relative standard deviation (RSD) and limit of detection (LOD, 3s) of the method were 3.2% and 0.4 μg L^-1, respectively. The method was successfully applied to determination of Cu(II) in fish otoliths (CRM 22), bone ash (SRM 1400) and coastal seawater and estuarine water samples.

Chelating materials immobilizing carboxymethylated pentaethylenehexamine and polyethyleneimine as ligands

This article presents an overview of our recent progress on the development of chelating materials. Carboxymethylated pentaethylenehexamine (CM-PEHA) and polyethyleneimine (CM-PEI) as chelating ligands show excellent performance for the solid-phase extraction of trace elements. Chelating resins immobilizing these ligands can be readily prepared by immobilizing PEHA and PEI on methacrylate resins and then carboxymethylating them. Chelating fiber can also be prepared with a wet spinning technique using a mixture of a viscose solution and a solution containing fine particulate CM-PEHA resin or CM-PEI. The potentials of these chelating materials for the separation and preconcentration of trace elements are outlined.
