Abstract
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are well known for their exceptional properties and versatility in various applications. This study used andrographolide as a biochemical stabilizer to synthesize AgNPs (andro-AgNPs). The andro-AgNPs were characterized by using UV-vis spectroscopy, revealing a surface plasmon resonance peak at 440 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was also used to confirm the presence of AgNPs. Transmission electron microscopy was used to investigate the morphology of andro-AgNPs, which showed a spherical shape with an average diameter of 18.30 ± 5.57 nm (n = 205). Andro-AgNPs were utilized as a colorimetric sensor to detect mercury ions (Hg2+) in water, and the optimized detection conditions were evaluated using UV-vis spectroscopy with a linear range of 15-120 μM. The limit of detection and the limit of quantification for Hg2+ detection were found to be 11.15 and 37.15 μM, respectively. Furthermore, andro-AgNPs exhibited antibacterial properties against both Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. The results imply that andro-AgNPs hold promising potential for future biomedical applications.

Abstract
Plasmonic nanoparticles such as Ag have gained great interest in the biomedical domain and chemical analysis due to their unique optical properties. Herein, we report a simple, cost-effective, and highly selective colorimetric sensor of mercury(ii) based on E. diffusum (horsetail) extract-functionalized Ag nanoparticles (ED-AgNPs). The ED-AgNPs were synthesized by exploiting the coordination of Ag+ with the various functional groups of ED extract under sunlight exposure for only tens of seconds. ED-AgNPs (63 nm) were characterized using various techniques such as UV-vis, FTIR, DLS, SEM and EDX. FTIR spectra suggested the successful encapsulation of the AgNPs surface with ED extract and XRD confirmed its crystalline nature. This ED-AgNPs colorimetric sensor revealed remarkable selectivity towards Hg2+ in aqueous solution among other transition metal ions through a redox reaction mechanism. Besides, the sensor exhibited high sensitivity with rapid response and a detection limit of 70 nM. The sensor demonstrated feasibility for Hg(ii) detection in spiked tap and river water samples. In addition, the synthesized ED-AgNPs revealed enhanced antimicrobial activity with higher efficacy against the Gram-positive bacterium (L. monocytogenes with an inhibition zone of 18 mm) than the Gram-negative bacterium (E. coli with an inhibition zone of 10 mm). The simplicity and adaptability of this colorimetric sensor render it a promising candidate for on-site and point-of-care detection of heavy metal ions in diverse conditions.

Abstract
This study focused on synthesizing ginger-stabilized silver nanoparticles (Gin-AgNPs) using a more eco-friendly method that utilized AgNO3 and natural ginger solution. These nanoparticles underwent a color change from yellow to colorless when exposed to Hg2+, enabling the detection of Hg2+ in tap water. The colorimetric sensor had good sensitivity, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.46 μM and a limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 3.04 μM. Importantly, the sensor operated accurately without being affected by various other metal ions. To enhance its performance, a machine learning approach was employed and achieved accuracy ranging from 0% to 14.66% when trained with images of Gin-AgNP solutions containing different Hg2+ concentrations. Furthermore, the Gin-AgNPs and Gin-AgNPs hydrogels exhibited antibacterial effects against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, indicating potential future applications in the detection of Hg2+ and in wound healing.

Green-emitting functionalized silicon nanoparticles as an "off-on" fluorescence bio-probe for the sensitive and selective detection of mercury (II) and 3-mercaptopropionic acid. Abstract
Herein, we developed a class of functionalized silicon nanoparticles (F-SiNPs) bio-probes named thiol-conjugated F-SiNPs. They combine excellent biocompatibility with small dimensions (<10 nm) and biological usefulness with sustained and robust fluorescence (3.32% photoluminescent quantum yield). Identifying 3-Mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA), which lowers the quantity of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain, and mercury (Hg2+) was a crucially important step since their excessive levels are a sign of several disorders. Using F-SiNPs as a fluorescent bio-probe, we provided an "off-on" technique for sensitively and selectively determining Hg2+ and 3-MPA in this study. The 3-(2-aminoethylamino) propyl (dimethoxymethylsilane) and basic fuchsin as precursors were hydrothermally treated to produce the F-SiNPs exhibiting green fluorescence. Our results suggest that Hg2+ reduced the fluorescence of F-SiNPs because of strong ionic interactions and metal-ligand binding among many thiols and carboxyl groupings at the surface of Hg2+ and F-SiNPs. Additionally, the resultants demonstrated that after being quenched by Hg2+, the produced F-SiNPs led to the distinctive "off-on" response to 3-MPA. Moreover, the method could detect Hg2+ and 3-MPA with limits of detection of 0.065 μM and 0.017 μM, respectively. The technique employed is quick, easy, affordable, and environmentally friendly. The sensing platform has successfully determined Hg2+ and 3-MPA in urine, water, and human serum samples.

Abstract
The aqueous Trigonella foenum-graecum L. leaf extract belonging to variety HM 444 was used as reducing agent for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesis. UV-Visible spectroscopy, Particle size analyser (PSA), Field emission scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FESEM-EDX) and High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were used to characterize AgNPs. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) confirmed the formation of metallic Ag. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was done to find out the possible phytochemicals responsible for stabilization and capping of the AgNPs. The produced AgNPs had an average particle size of 21 nm, were spherical in shape, and monodispersed. It showed catalytic degradation of Methylene blue (96.57%, 0.1665 ± 0.03 min-1), Methyl orange (71.45%, 0.1054 ± 0.002 min-1), and Rhodamine B (92.72%, 0.2004 ± 0.01 min-1). The produced AgNPs were excellent solid bio-based sensors because they were very sensitive to Hg2+ and Fe3+ metal ions with a detection limit of 11.17 µM and 195.24 µM, respectively. From the results obtained, it was suggested that aqueous leaf extract demonstrated a versatile and cost-effective method and should be utilized in future as green technology for the fabrication of nanoparticles.

Abstract
Mercury is one of the most toxic heavy metals causing harmful effects on the human body; meanwhile, mercury is found in some face cream products to give a whitening effect. The upper limit concentration of mercury in skin-lightening products defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is under one mg/L as Hg2+. A new green analytical spectrophotometric method for mercury analysis has been developed by employing a biological reagent from fruit skin extract of robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) as a bioreductor for silver ions as well as a stabilizer for the AgNPs product. The detection principle of this method is based on the decrease of the color intensity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) after the addition of Hg2+ ions due to the re-oxidization of the AgNPs by Hg2+ ions to colorless Ag+ ions. To achieve the most significant sensitivity, linearity of measurement, and validity, the method was optimized toward the volume of AgNPs and reaction time. In this research, the synthesized AgNPs were also characterized by UV-Vis Spectrometry as well as a particle size analyzer (PSA) to determine the size of nanoparticles. The result showed that the optimum conditions were attained at 4 mL AgNPs solution and 3-min reaction resulting in a linear measurement of Hg2+ in the range of 0-15 mg/L with LOD and LOQ of 0.039 and 0.130 mg/L, respectively. This method is quite selective and has been validated by applying it to real face cream samples with satisfactory results supported by average recoveries of close to 100%.

Abstract
It is of great significance to develop efficient platforms for the detection of hypertoxic Hg2+ and H2S. Colorimetric have received much attention for the detection of H2S and Hg2+ in the last decades. In this work, an "on-off-on" mode colorimetric method based on MnO2/multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MnO2/MWCNTs) composite was constructed. MnO2/MWCNTs composite can oxidize TMB directly to form blue product (ox TMB) with a good simulated oxidase activity. In the presence of H2S, it can decompose the MnO2/MWCNTs composite causing the absorbance of the chromogenic system to decrease. When Hg2+ is introduced, the formation of Hg-S bond between Hg2+ and H2S inhibited the decomposition ability of H2S toward MnO2 composite, thus resulting in a color change from colorless to blue. Based on this phenomenon, the proposed "on-off-on" colorimetric sensor can be used for detection of H2S (off) and Hg2+ (on). Under optimized experimental conditions, this sensor showed a satisfactory linear relationship of H2S and Hg2+ with pleasant repeatability, acceptable method accuracy and stability. More importantly, the proposed colorimetric sensor has been successfully applied to the detection of H2S and Hg2+ in real samples, which not only provides a simple and cost-effective method to detect H2S and Hg2+ but also hopefully makes a certain contribution to environmental protection.

Abstract
Environmental pollution caused by heavy metal ions has become a major health problem across the world. In this study, a selective colorimetric sensor based on starch functionalized silver nanoparticles (St-Ag NPs) for rapid detection of Hg2+ in real samples was developed. The environmentally friendly green approach was utilized to synthesize starch functionalized silver nanoparticles (St-AgNPs). A multi-technique approach involving UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used for the characterization of St-Ag NPs. These starch functionalized AgNPs were tested for the detection of heavy metals at 25 °C. The screening process revealed clear changes in the AgNPs color and absorption intensity only in the presence of Hg2+ due to the redox reaction between Ag0 and Hg2+. The color and absorption intensity of nanoparticles remain unchanged in the presence of all the other tested metals ion. The proposed method has strong selectivity and sensitivity to Hg2+ ions, with a detection limit of 1 ppm revealed by UV-visible spectrophotometry. The proposed procedure was found to be successful for the detection of Hg2+ in real samples of tap water.

Abstract
We report a novel aptasensor for the simultaneous colorimetric and electrochemical detection of mercury (Hg2+). This device consists of a paper-based microfluidic component (μ-PAD) incorporated into a miniaturized three-electrode system fabricated through printed circuit board (PCB) technology. This biosensor is portable, rapid, versatile, and can detect Hg2+ down to 0.01 ppm based on 3σ of the blank/slope criteria. Moreover, it is highly selective against As2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Mg2+, and Fe2+, reaching up to 13 times more of the input signal than the other heavy metals. The colorimetric detection mechanism uses aptamer functionalized polystyrene (PS)-AgNPs and Ps-AuNPs microparticles' specific aggregation. The Ps-AuNPs-based system allows qualitative detection (LOD 5 ppm) and stability over seven days (up to 97.59% signal retention). For the Ps-AgNPs-based system, the detection limit is 0.5 ppm with a linear range from 0.5 to 20 ppm (adjusted R2= 0.986) and stability over 30 days (up to 94.95% signal retention). The electrochemical component measures changes in charge transfer resistance upon target-aptamer hybridization using a [Ru (NH3)6]3+Cl3] redox probe. The latest component presents a linear range from 0.01 to 1 ppm (adjusted R2= 0.935) with a LOD of 0.01 ppm and performance stability over seven days (up to 102.52 ± 11.7 signal retention). This device offers a universal dual detection platform with multiplexing, multi-replication, quantitative color analysis, and minimization of false results. Furthermore, detection results in river samples showed recoveries up to 91.12% (RSD 0.85) and 105.61% (RSD 1.62) for the electrochemical and colorimetric components, respectively. The proposed system is highly selective with no false-positive or false-negative results in an overall wide linear range and can safeguard the accuracy of detection results in aptasensing platforms in general.

Abstract
The present work reports the synthesis, characterization, and antimicrobial activities of adipic acid-capped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@AA) and their utilization for selective detection of Hg2+ ions in an aqueous solution. The AgNPs were synthesized by the reduction of Ag+ ions with NaBH4 followed by capping with adipic acid. Characterization of as-synthesized AgNPs@AA was carried out by different techniques, including UV-Visible spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), and zeta potential (ZP). In the UV-Vis absorption spectrum, the characteristic absorption band for AgNPs was observed at 404 nm. The hydrodynamic size of as-synthesized AgNPs was found to be 30 ± 5.0 nm. ZP values (-35.5 ± 2.4 mV) showed that NPs possessed a negative charge due to carboxylate ions and were electrostatically stabilized. The AgNPs show potential antimicrobial activity against clinically isolated pathogens. These AgNPs were found to be selectively interacting with Hg2+ in an aqueous solution at various concentrations. A calibration curve was constructed by plotting concentration as abscissa and absorbance ratio (AControl - AHg/AControl) as ordinate. The linear range and limit of detection (LOD) of Hg2+ were 0.6-1.6 μM and 0.12 μM, respectively. A rapid response time of 4 min was found for the detection of Hg2+ by the nano-probe. The effect of pH and temperature on the detection of Hg2+ was also investigated. The nano-probe was successfully applied for the detection of Hg2+ from tap and river water.

Abstract
Olive pomace (OP) is the main residue that results from olive oil production. OP is rich in bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, so its use in the treatments of diseases related to oxidative stress, such as cancer, could be considered. The present work aimed to study the biological properties of different OP extracts, obtained by ohmic heating-assisted extraction and conventional heating, using water and 50% ethanol, in the treatment and prevention of colorectal cancer through Caco-2 cell models. Additionally, an in-silico analysis was performed to identify the phenolic intestinal absorption and Caco-2 permeability. The extracts were chemically characterized, and it was found that the Ohmic-hydroethanolic (OH-EtOH) extract had the highest antiproliferative effect, probably due to its higher content of phenolic compounds. The OH-EtOH induced potential modifications in the mitochondrial membrane and led to apoptosis by cell cycle arrest in the G1/S phases with activation of p53 and caspase 3 proteins. In addition, this extract protected the intestine against oxidative stress (ROS) caused by H2O2. Therefore, the bioactive compounds present in OP and recovered by applying a green technology such as ohmic-heating, show promising potential to be used in food, nutraceutical, and biomedical applications, reducing this waste and facilitating the circular economy.

Abstract
Removal of selenite (Se (IV)) from wastewater is vital due to its more toxic and mobile properties. In this study, a novel dendritic silver-dendrites@ copper with hierarchical side-branches were synthesized through a two-pot rapid, facile, and green precipitation route. Characterization of the dendrites by transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) confirmed the proper preparation of dendritic AgCu nanostructure. Significantly, the Ag@Cu nanostructure has high specific surface area (150 m2/g) and excellent adsorption activity toward selenite. The adsorption rate of Se (IV) on the dendritic AgCu reaches 94% within 60 min under normal adsorption procedures. Both adsorption kinetics and isotherms have been described well by the pesudo-second order model and Langmuir model, respectively. The noticeable high adsorption capabilities can mainly accredit to the effect of the hierarchical side-branched structure. Therefore, the dendritic AgCu nanostructure has a room of treating heavy metals-contaminated industrial wastewater streams. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Silver-dendrites@ copper with hierarchical side-branches were synthesized through a rapid and green precipitation route using copper nanoparticles. The prepared nanostructure was applied for Se (IV) adsorption at varying operational conditions (contact time, pH, and dose). High adsorption capacity for Se (IV) up to 173.1 mg/g was achieved using the prepared nanoparticles applying Langmuir isotherm model.

Abstract
For the optimization of silver nanoparticle production, a central composite design was used with three parameters: AgNO3 concentration, green tea extract concentration, and temperature at three different levels. The size of the synthesized silver nanoparticle, its UV absorbance, zeta potential, and polydispersity index were set as the response parameters. Silver nanoparticles obtained in the optimization process were characterized and its efficacy on colorimetric detection of mercury was evaluated. The response variables were significant for the factors analyzed, and each variable had a significant model (P < 0.05). The ideal conditions were: 1 mM AgNO3, 0.5% green tea extract, and 80 °C temperature. To analyze the produced AgNPs under certain ideal conditions, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used. The UV-visible spectra of AgNPs revealed an absorption maxima at 424 nm. The XRD pattern reveals a significant diffraction peak at 38.25°, 44.26°, 64.43°, and 77.49°, which corresponds to the (111), (200), (220), and (311) planes of polycrystalline face-centered cubic (fcc) silver, respectively. The TEM and SEM analyses confirmed that the particles were spherical, and dynamic light scattering study determined the average diameter of AgNPs to be 77.4 nm. The AgNPs have a zeta potential of -62.6 mV, as determined by the zeta sizer analysis. The AgNPs detects mercury at a micromolar concentration. Furthermore, the environmentally friendly generated AgNPs were used to detect mercury in a colorimetric method that was effectively employed for analytical detection of Hg2+ ions in an aqueous environment for the purpose of practical application.

Abstract
Mercury (Hg) emissions are increasing annually owing to rapid global industrialization. Hg poisoning can severely affect the human body owing to its persistence and bioaccumulation. In this study, hybrid nanoflowers (NFs) were synthesized by promoting the formation of primary copper-phosphate crystals coordinated with polydopamine (PDA) and Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), followed by coating with silver nanoparticles on the surface of the NFs (Ag-MNP-PDA-Cu NFs). The results suggest that the hierarchical structure of the NFs enabled a large surface area with nanosized pores, which were exploited for Hg adsorption. The adsorbed Hg ions could be further eliminated from the solution based on the magnetic characteristics of the NFs. Additionally, hybrid NFs functionalized with Hg2+-binding aptamers (Apt-Ag-MNP-PDA-Cu NFs) were prepared based on the silver-sulfur interactions between the Ag-MNP-PDA-Cu NFs and thiol-modified aptamers. The performance of both adsorbents demonstrated that the immobilization of Hg2+-binding aptamers significantly improved the elimination of Hg from solution. The Hg2+ adsorption isotherm of the Apt-Ag-MNP-PDA-Cu NFs followed the Dubinin-Radushkevich model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 1073.19 mg/g. The Apt-Ag-MNP-PDA-Cu NFs adsorbed greater amounts of Hg2+ than the non-functionalized NFs at the same concentrations, which confirmed that the functionalization of Hg2+-binding aptamers on the NFs improved the Hg2+ removal performance. The results suggest that Apt-Ag-MNP-PDA-Cu NFs could serve as an efficient Hg-removing adsorbent, possibly by providing binding sites for the formation of T-Hg2+-T complexes.

Abstract
A selective and sensitive detection of L-cysteine (Cys) is an important tool for various biological studies. Here, Au nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by chemical reduction technique. The probe was developed to detect and quantify Cys in the presence of Cr3+ ions which acts as a cross linker. The citrate capped Au NPs probe was analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometry, TEM, EDAX, FTIR, DLS, XPS and zetasize. The zeta potential and effective size of Au NPs were -41.22 mV and 12 nm, respectively. The Cys interaction with Au NPs showed drastic colour variation from red to purple and colourless with rapid response time of 1 min. The limit of detection (LOD) of Au NPs probe was as low as 0.012 nM. The TEM image of Au NPs after Cys interaction verified the aggregation that resulted in colour change. The XPS core level scans of Au 4f showed 0.3 eV red shift when Cyswas interacted. The Au NPs sensor is highly selective for Cys with excellent reproducibility. Acidic pH slightly favored Cys detection. Further, the probe was applied to estimate Cys quantity from milk, urine, blood and environmental augmented samples in the presence of other amino acids . The study suggests that the proposed Au NPs could detect Cys with high accuracy from various biological samples.

Abstract
Natural bioactive compounds from food waste have fomented interest in food and pharmaceutical industries for the past decade. In this work, it purposed the recovery of bioactive avocado peel extract using an environmentally friendly technique: the ultrasound assisted extraction. The response surface methodology was applied in order to optimize the conditions of the extraction, ethanol-water mixtures and time. The optimized extracts (ethanol 38.46%, 44.06 min, and 50 °C) were chemically characterized by HPLC-ESI-MS and FTIR. Its antioxidant ability, as well as, its effect on cell metabolic activity of normal (L929) and cancer (Caco-2, A549 and HeLa) cell lines were assessed. Aqueous ethanol extracts presented a high content in bioactive compounds with high antioxidant potential. The most representative class of the phenolic compounds found in the avocado peel extract were phenolic acids, such as hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids. Another important chemical group detected were the flavonoids, such as flavanols, flavanonols, flavones, flavanones and chalcone, phenylethanoids and lignans. In terms of its influence on the metabolic activity of normal and cancer cell lines, the extract does not significantly affect normal cells. On the other hand, it can negatively affect cancer cells, particularly HeLa cells. These results clearly demonstrated that ultrasound is a sustainable extraction technique, resulting in extracts with low toxicity in normal cells and with potential application in food, pharmaceutical or nutraceutical sectors.

Abstract
We report an inkjet-printed paper based colorimetric sensor with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using smartphone and color detector App for on-site determination of mercuric ion (Hg2+) from environmental water samples. The AgNPs printed on Whatman filter paper (No. 1) is employed for detection of Hg2+ which is reliant on the color change of NPs from yellow to discoloration depending on the concentration of target analyte in sample solution. The quantitative determination was performed by calculating the signal intensity of AgNPs on printed paper substrate after the introduction of Hg2+ using smartphone and RGB color detector. The mechanism for detection of Hg2+ on paper substrate is verified using UV-Vis spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and basic chemical assays. The linear range acquired for paper based colorimetric detection in the range of 40-1200 µgL-1 with limit of detection of 10 µgL-1. The results obtained using an inkjet-printed paper-based chemical sensor combined with a smartphone is validated with data of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) measurement. The advantages of paper based detection are simple, rapid, economic and can be applied at the sample sources for determination of Hg2+.

Abstract
Nanoscience is a multifaceted field which encompasses metal nanoparticles (MNPs) having novel and size-related optical properties significantly different from the bulk level as well as at the atomic level. Amongst noble MNPs, the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have unique properties for metal interaction. Presently, there have been expedite reports which are taken under the review in virtue of sensing the mercury ions in aqueous media. Mercury dissemination in various forms contaminates the ecosystem. Globally mercury is ranked as the most toxic element and an urgent threat to humans since it causes major health issues. Employing MNPs, especially AgNPs for the detection of mercury ions is the economic, handy and apt method in contrast to time-consuming methods that use expensive instrumentations. The review highlights a study of colorimetric and fluorimetric detection of the level of Hg (II) ions in aqueous media selectively with high sensitivity in different courses of conditions using AgNPs synthesized by various approaches. Abstract
Application of an alliin-based precursor for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) which is an emerging, reliable and rapid sensor of heavy metal ion contaminants in water is reported here. The Ag NPs were characterized by using UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy analysis techniques. The Ag NPs simultaneously and selectively detect Hg2+ and Sn2+ ions from aqueous solution. The sensitivity and selectivity of the prepared Ag NPs towards other representative transition-metal ions, alkali metal ions and alkaline earth metal ions were also studied. For more precise evidence, a density functional theory study was carried out to understand the possible mechanism and interaction in the detection of Hg2+ and Sn2+ by Ag NPs. The limits of detection for Hg2+ and Sn2+ ions were found as 15.7 nM and 11.25 nM, respectively. This assay indicates the possible use of garlic extract-synthesized Ag NPs for sensing Hg2+ and Sn2+ in aqueous solution very significantly. So, the simple, green, eco-friendly and easy method to detect the dual metal ions may further lead to a potential sensor of heavy metal ion contaminants in water of industrial importance.

Abstract
A novel fiber-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on SnO2, MoS2, SnO2/MoS2, and SnO2-MoS2 sensing film for cadmium-ion (Cd2+) detection is proposed and fabricated. The photonic-crystal fiber (PCF) is sandwiched between the no-core-fiber-1 (NCF1) and no-core-fiber-2 (NCF2), forming the Mach-Zehnder interferometer with the NCF1-PCF-NCF2 structure, which is regarded as the sensing unit. The SnO2, MoS2, SnO2/MoS2, and SnO2-MoS2 sensing films are, respectively, coated on the surface of two NCFs' claddings. The comparative experiment results of the sensors with four membranes (SnO2, MoS2, SnO2/MoS2, SnO2-MoS2) show that the sensors have good sensing performance for Cd2+ in the concentration range of 0-100 µM. When these sensing films adsorbed Cd2+, the monitoring wavelength shows blueshift of 0.6931 nm, 1.0252 nm, 1.9505 nm, respectively, and redshift of 3.0258 nm, and the sensitivities are 6.931 pm/µM, 10.252 pm/µM, 19.505 pm/µM, and 30.258 pm/µM, respectively. The sensor with SnO2-MoS2 bilayer film exhibits the optimal response to Cd2+ with excellent selectivity and stability. The proposed sensor has the advantages of simple structure, easy fabrication, small size, etc., having potential application in the monitoring of Cd2+ in aqueous solution.

Abstract
The development of nanotechnology for hazardous heavy metal detection with nanoparticles (NPs) created an interest for the preparation of MnS/Ag nanocomposite. Here, MnS/Ag-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanocomposite was developed for the detection of mercury. The prepared composite was analyzed using particle size analyzer, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, zetasizer, high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The λmax of MnS/Ag-PVP nanocomposite was observed at 404 nm. The particle size was determined to be 21 ± 1.7 nm and the surface charge was -31.19 ± 3 mV. The brownish yellow colour of the nanocomposite changed into colourless when Hg2+ was added. The different metal ions present with the analyte did not show any interference on detection of Hg2+. The MnS/Ag-PVP nanocomposite incorporated paper and gel exhibited visual detection of Hg2+ from aqueous sample. There was an excellent linearity (y = -0.0015x + 0.8744) found in plot of 20 to 100 nM Hg2+ concentrations versus absorbance at 404 nm and the LOD was calculated to be 16 nM. The probe was applied to quantify Hg2+ from spiked environmental sample and the results were further confirmed with atomic absorption spectrophotometric analysis. Hence, the investigation suggests that the present probe could efficiently detect and quantify Hg2+ at nano molar level. In addition, the study suggests that MnS/Ag-PVP nanocomposite exhibit multifunctional property including efficient photocatalytic and antimicrobial activity. The antibacterial activity was evaluated against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria.

Abstract
A simple and sensitive colorimetric sensing method was constructed for detection of Hg2+ in aqueous solutions and based on silver nanoparticles functionalized with l-cysteine (l-Cys-Ag NPs). In this method, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) induced aggregation of l-Cys-Ag NPs. Simultaneously, the solution colour changed from bright yellow to brown. In the presence of Hg2+ , Hg2+ chelated ATP to form a complex and reduce the degree of aggregation of l-Cys-Ag NPs and was accompanied by a colour change from brown to bright yellow. The changing values of absorbance at 390 nm were linearly correlated with concentration of Hg2+ over the 4.00 × 10-8 to 1.04 × 10-6 mol·L-1 range, with a detection limit of 8 nM. This method was used successfully for detection of Hg2+ in real water samples and performed good selectivity and sensitivity. The recovery range was 91.5-109.1%, indicating that the method has vast application potential for determination of Hg2+ in the environment.

Abstract
Mercury is a toxic heavy metal that reaches to the water bodies mainly by coal burning, mining and petrol refining. The study was focused to investigate the application of Ag-cellulose nanocomposite to detect and quantify mercury colorimetrically. The Ag-cellulose nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, particle size analyzer and zetasizer. The study identified that the presence of other metal ions did not interfere with the detection of Hg2+ ion by the probe. The prepared Ag-cellulose nanocomposite-phenylalanine conjugate incorporated paper strip showed an excellent result in Hg2+ detection. The Ag-cellulose nanocomposite was used to quantify the unknown concentration of mercury on real sample (environmental sample) and it was found to be highly accurate by confirming with atomic absorption spectrophotometric analysis. The Ag-cellulose nanocomposite showed effective detection at 45 °C, pH 9 and 0.1% of salinity. The Ag-cellulose nanocomposite showed efficient photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation. The half-life period of MB by Ag-cellulose nanocomposite under visible light was determined to be 90 min. The study suggests the application of prepared probe in photocatalysis and the detection of Hg2+ from various environmental samples.

Abstract
Environmental pollution derivated from toxic metals and organic toxins is becoming a serious issue worldwide because of their harmful effects on the ecosystem and human health. Here we are reporting an extremely selective and cost-effective colorimetric sensor for simultaneous recognition of Hg2+ and Pb2+ by using green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) mediated from the environmental friendly roots extract of Bistorta amplexicaulis. Biogenic synthesized AgNPs were well-characterized by various spectroscopic techniques e.g., UV-vis, FT-IR, XRD, AFM, and Zetasizer. The photophysical potential of synthesized AgNPs toward common metal cations was explored via absorption spectroscopy and colorimetric assay. The hypsochromic shift in the SPR band of AgNPs can easily be detected through naked eyes vision from dark brown to light yellow in the case of Hg2+. A substantial reduction in the absorbance of AgNPs was recorded upon mixing with Pb2+. AgNPs based colorimetric sensor is highly sensitive toward Hg2+ and Pb2+ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.0 × 10-7 M and 2.0 × 10-7 M for Hg2+ and Pb2+, respectively. Furthermore, AgNPs showed promising catalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange dye. These results demonstrate that Bistorta amplexicaulis stabilized silver nanoparticles have potential applications as a colorimetric sensor and an effective catalyst for the degradation of methyl orange.

Abstract
Fluorescent nanomaterials, such as quantum dots, have developed rapidly in recent years and have been significantly developed. Herein, we demonstrate a facile, one-pot, and in-situ synthesis strategy to obtain fluorescent silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) coated with eight-armed poly (ethylene glycol) polymers (8PEG-AgNCs) via a direct gel-mediated process. During the synthesis, ammonium (NH3) served as the crosslinker for the gel formation via a amine-type Michael addition reaction. This hydrogel can be used as a template to synthesize AgNCs using its volume-limiting effect. The in-situ generation of AgNCs takes place inside the nanocages of the formed gels, which guarantees the homogenous distribution of AgNCs in the gel matrix, as well as the efficient coating of PEG on the nanoclusters. After the degradation of gels, the released 8PEG-AgNCs nanohybrids showed strong blue fluorescence and exhibited long-term stability in aqueous solution for nearly one year. Results showed that the fabricated sensor revealed excellent fluorescent sensitivity for the selective detection of Cu2+ with a detection limit of 50 nM and a wide linear detection range of 5–100 μM. It is proposed that the greater cross-linking density leads to smaller gel pores and allows the synthesis of AgNCs with fluorescent properties. These results indicate that this novel hydrogel with certain biodegradation has the potential to be applied as a fluorescent sensor for catalytic synthesis, fluorescence tracing in cells, and fluorescence detection fields. Meanwhile, the novel design principle has a certain versatility to accelerate the development and application of other kinds of metal nanoclusters and quantum dots.

Abstract
A facile colorimetric method was developed for detecting 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The addition of 6-MP to AgNPs led to the aggregation of AgNPs with a color change from yellow to brown. The ratio between the absorbance at 394 and 530 nm (A394/A530) was used for a quantitative analysis of 6-MP. A linear range of 0 - 0.5 μM was obtained with a detection limit of 10 nM. The developed method is cost-effective and simple.

Abstract
Development of potential sensors is inevitable for the detection of environmental pollutants including toxins, organic pollutants and heavy metal which cause hazardous effect to human and other living organisms. The present study is to develop silver nanoparticle (Ag NPs) based sensor for the accurate, sensitive and selective colorimetric detection of Hg2+ ions from aqueous samples at nano molar level. The nanoparticles were synthesized chemically and it was stabilized by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The prepared particles were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle analysiser and Zetasizer. The UV-visible spectra of Ag NPs showed absorbance maximum at 392 nm. The average diameter of Ag NPs was determined to be 6 ± 0.9 nm by using particle analyzer. The zeta sizer analysis showed that the PVP stabilized Ag NPs possessed a zeta potential of -35.56 ± 3 mV. The Ag NPs-methionine conjugate showed the colour change from the brownish yellow colour to colourless when it was reacted with mercury. The Ag NPs conjugated methionine is sensitive to mercury and detects the mercury at nano molar level. The influence of other metal ion did not interfere with the detection and quantification of Hg2+. The detection of Hg2+ was also performed with paper strip and agarose gel method. The Ag NPs conjugate with methionine can applied for the detection of Hg2+ from various aqueous samples.

Abstract
Presently, nanotechnology is being foreseen to play an important role in developing analytical assays for the detection of pollutants like mercury (Hg2+). In this study, Kokum fruit mediated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were differentially centrifuged to prepare anionic, monodispersed AgNPs to develop a highly sensitive, colorimetric and memristor-based assay for detection of Hg2+ in water samples. The investigation of the highly selective reaction between AgNPs and Hg2+ using HAADF-STEM images and EDS spectrum indicated the amalgam formation through etching and under potential deposition which resulted in a visible color change from brown to colorless, change in SPR intensity and also change in memristive switching like property of AgNPs. The developed colorimetric assay detected Hg2+ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 6.2 ppb and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 18.9 ppb and, quantitatively recovered Hg2+ with good accuracy and precision (RSD < 2%). Further, the test of memristive switching like property of AgNPs demonstrated frequency-dependent shrinkage of I–V hysteresis loop indicating memristive switching like property. The test of the sensitivity of Hg2+ detection was estimated to be 8.7 ppb as the LOD and 26.4 ppb as LOQ. Like the colorimetric assay, the memristor-based assay also recovered Hg2+ with good accuracy and precision.

Abstract
A facile and green method was adopted to synthesize highly selective gum acacia-mediated silver nanoparticles as dual sensor (fluorescence turn-on and colorimetric) for Hg(ii) and fluorescence turn-off sensor for S2- and malachite green. The mechanism proposed for a dual response towards Hg(ii) is the redox reaction between Ag(0) and Hg(ii), resulting in the formation of Ag(i) and Hg(0) and electron transfer from gum acacia to Ag(i), which further leads to the formation of an Ag@Hg nanoalloy. The enhanced fluorescence signal was quenched selectively by S2- owing to the formation of Ag2S and HgS. The reported nanosensor was found to be useful for sensing malachite green via the inner filter effect. The linear ranges were 3 nmol L-1 to 13 μmol L-1 for Hg(ii), 3-170 μmol L-1 for S2- and 7-80 μmol L-1 for malachite green, and the corresponding detection limits were 2.1 nmol L-1 for Hg(ii), 1.3 μmol L-1 for S2- and 1.6 μmol L-1 for malachite green.

Abstract
Maintaining a clean water supply is of utmost importance for human civilization. Human activities are putting an increasing strain on Earth’s freshwater reserves and on the quality of available water on Earth. To ensure cleanliness and potability of water, sensors are required to monitor various water quality parameters in surface, ground, drinking, process, and waste water. One set of parameters with high importance is the presence of cations. Some cations can play a beneficial role in human biology, and others have detrimental effects. In this review, various lab-based and field-based methods of cation detection are discussed, and the uses of these methods for the monitoring of water are investigated for their selectivity and sensitivity. The cations chosen were barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, hardness (calcium, magnesium), lead, mercury, nickel, silver, uranium, and zinc. The methods investigated range from optical (absorbance/fluorescence) to electrical (potentiometry, voltammetry, chemiresistivity), mechanical (quartz crystal microbalance), and spectrometric (mass spectrometry). Emphasis is placed on recent developments in mobile sensing technologies, including for integration into microfluidics.

Abstract
The rapid development of information and communication technology provides an opportunity for scientists to develop a quantitative analytical method that is built on a mobile gadget as a detector. In this paper, we report a low-cost, simple and portable analytical method for mercury ion quantification based on digital image colorimetry coupled with a smartphone application. A small amount of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was used as a colorimetric agent that is selective only to mercury ions. The yellowish brown color of AgNPs instantly changed to colorless after the addition of mercury ions due to a redox reaction. To increase the portability, we attached the AgNPs onto a medium to create a paper-based analytical device. The final data processing of the colorimetric analysis was conducted using an android application available on the Google Play Store, called “Mercury Detector”. The proposed method has good sensitivity, with a detection limit of 0.86 ppb, which is comparable to those of bulk and more expensive instruments. This allows for the detection of mercury ions as low as 2 ppb (10 nM), which is also the maximum contaminant level permitted in drinking water by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The proposed method was applied to real samples that provide satisfactory results on accuracy (2.4%) and precision (2.5%).
