The Role of Hydrology in the Polychlorinated Dibenzo--dioxin and Dibenzofuran Distributions in a Lowland River

Dioxins and furans toxicity during the photocatalytic remediation of emerging pollutants. Triclosan as case study

The benefits of wastewater remediation technologies are offset in those cases where, as a result of operating conditions, harmful compounds are formed in the degradation routes of the original organic pollutants. This may be the case for the application of some advanced oxidation processes to wastewater containing precursors of dioxins and furans, as previously reported in the application of electrochemical and Fenton oxidation to degrade Triclosan and 2-chlorophenol. This work reports for the first time a detailed kinetic analysis of the formation of dioxins and furans during the photocatalytic treatment of aqueous samples containing 5-Chloro-2-[2,4-dichlorophenoxy] phenol, commercially known as Triclosan. After analysis of the PCDD/Fs concentration, the toxicity of the samples has been determined in terms of toxic equivalents (TEQ). TEQ values have been calculated, first with the group of 17 congeners with higher toxicity. Finally, a multivariable analysis and linear regression have been applied to reduce the significant number of congeners and optimize the analytical effort.

A catchment-scale assessment of the sanitary condition of treated wastewater and river water based on fecal indicators and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp

Urbanization and population growth have created considerable sanitation challenges in cities and communities in many parts of Europe and the world. As such, it is imperative to identify the most environmentally-harmful microbiological and chemical sources of pollution, these being wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) which release wastewater of low quality. In the present manuscript, an extensive study was performed of the sanitary conditions of river water and treated wastewater from seventeen WWTPs of various sizes along the Pilica River catchment in central Poland, with the aim of identifying "hot spots" in terms of most serious sources of sanitary hazards. The bacteriological risk for the river, including fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) such as coliforms, E.coli, enterococci, C. perfringens, and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp. (CRA) were assessed using classical microbiological methods, and the physicochemical parameters were also tested. The WWTPs, particularly the small ones (<2000 people equivalent, PE) demonstrated significant variation regarding the physicochemical parameters. Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp. bacteria growing at 42 °C were found in the effluent wastewaters of all tested municipal WWTPs, and in most of the Pilica River water samples, presenting a potential hazard to public health. A positive correlation was identified between E. coli and CRA abundance in treated wastewater; however, no such relationship was found in river water. It was found that seven small treatment plants discharged wastewater with very different microbiological parameters. Moreover, three small treatment plants serving only 0.56% of the population in the studied area continuously released extremely high microbiological contamination, constituting as much as 54-82% of fecal indicator bacteria loads in the area studied. Our findings show that this type of comprehensive analysis may enable assessment of the use of the entire catchment area, thus identifying the most serious threats to surface water quality and guiding the actions needed to improve the worst operating WWTPs.

An ecohydrological approach to the river contamination by PCDDs, PCDFs and dl-PCBs - concentrations, distribution and removal using phytoremediation techniques

The levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in the Pilica River and Sulejów Reservoir were found to be 46% higher during the flood season than during stable flow periods. In addition, PCDD/PCDF and dl-PCB mass loads increased by 5- to 12-fold and by 23- to 60-fold for toxic equivalency (TEQ) during flooding. The Sulejów Reservoir was found to play a positive role in reducing PCDD, PCDF and dl-PCB transport within the study period, with reductions ranging from 17 to 83% for total concentrations, and 33 to 79% for TEQ. Wastewater Treatment Plants (WTPs) were not efficient at mass concentration removal, with small displaying the least efficiency. WTPs discharge pollutants into the aquatic environment, they also produce sludge that requires disposal, similar to reservoir sediments. Sludge- or sediment-born PCDDs, PCDFs and dl-PCBs may be removed using phytoremediation. The cultivation of cucumber and zucchini, two efficient phytoremediators of organic pollutants, on polluted substrate resulted in a mean decrease in PCDD + PCDF + dl-PCB TEQ concentrations: 64% for cucumber and 69% for zucchini in sludge-amended soil, and by 52% for cucumber and 51% for zucchini in sediment-amended soil.

The Application of Different Biological Remediation Strategies to PCDDs/PCDFs Contaminated Urban Sediments

Our aim was to assess the efficacy of four different bioremediation strategies applied to soil treated with urban sediments for alleviating soil phytotoxicity (examined using Lepidium sativum), by removing polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and mitigating the toxic effect on plants by the applied sediment: (1) Natural attenuation, (2) phytoremediation with the use of two plants Tagetes patula L. and Festuca arundinacea, (3) rhizobacterial inoculation with Massilia niastensis p87 and Streptomyces costaricanus RP92 strains, (4) rhizobacteria-assisted phytoremediation with both plants and strains. The applied sediment had a positive influence on L. sativum growth (90% higher than in the unamended soil), mostly due to its high content of nutrients, mainly Ca and Fe, which immobilize pollutants. The positive effect of sediments continued for up to 10-week duration of the experiment; however, the rhizobacterial inoculated samples were characterized by higher growth of L. sativum. The application of rhizobacteria-assisted phytoremediation further increased the growth of L. sativum, and was also found to improve the efficiency of PCDD/PCDF removal, resulting in a maximum 44% reduction of its content. This strategy also alleviated the negative impact of urban sediments on T. patula and F. arundinacea biomass, and had a beneficial effect on protein and chlorophyll content in the studied plants.

The impact of environmental pollution on the quality of mother's milk

Breastfeeding is a gold standard of neonate nutrition because human milk contains a lot of essential compounds crucial for proper development of a child. However, milk is also a biofluid which can contain environmental pollution, which can have effects on immune system and consequently on the various body organs. Polychlorinated biphenyls are organic pollutants which have been detected in human milk. They have lipophilic properties, so they can penetrate to fatty milk and ultimately to neonate digestive track. Another problem of interest is the presence in milk of heavy metals-arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury-as these compounds can lead to disorders in production of cytokines, which are important immunomodulators. The toxicants cause stimulation or suppression of this compounds. This can lead to health problems in children as allergy, disorders in the endocrine system, end even neurodevelopment delay and disorder. Consequently, correlations between pollutants and bioactive components in milk should be investigated. This article provides an overview of environmental pollutants found in human milk as well as of the consequences of cytokine disorder correlated with presence of heavy metals. Graphical abstract.

The use of a hybrid Sequential Biofiltration System for the improvement of nutrient removal and PCB control in municipal wastewater

This article aims to evaluate the efficiency of an innovative hybrid Sequential Biofiltration System (SBS) for removing phosphorus and nitrogen and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from original municipal wastewater produced by a Wastewater Treatment Plant under authentic operating conditions. The hybrid SBS was constructed with two barriers, a geochemical (filtration beds with limestone, coal and sawdust) and a biological barrier (wetlands with Glyceria, Acorus, Typha, Phragmites), operating in parallel. Significant differences were found between inflow and outflow from the SBS with regard to wastewater contaminant concentrations, the efficiency of removal being 16% (max. 93%) for Total Phosphorus (TP), 25% (max. 93%) for Soluble Reactive Phosphorus (SRP), 15% (max. 97%) for Total Nitrogen (TN), 17% (max. 98%) for NO₃^-N, and 21% for PCB equivalency (PCB EQ). In the case of PCB EQ concentration, the highest efficiency of 43% was obtained using beds with macrophytes. The SBS removed a significant load of TP (0.415 kg), TN (3.136 kg), and PCB EQ (0.223 g) per square meter per year. The use of low-cost hybrid SBSs as a post-treatment step for wastewater treatment was found to be an effective ecohydrological biotechnology that may be used for reducing point source pollution and improving water quality.
