Evaluation of Vulvovaginitis and Hygiene Habits of Women Attended in Primary Health Care Units of the Family

Retrospective study of pathogens involved in vaginitis among Chinese women

BACKGROUND

To explore the pathogen distribution in Chinese females with vaginitis.

METHODS

This retrospective study included Chinese females with vaginitis admitted at the outpatient department of the Gynecology Clinic of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University between January 2013 and June 2013. Data on the vaginal pathogens and inflammation were analyzed.

RESULTS

The vaginal secretions from 15,601 gynecologic outpatients were abnormal, including 8547 (54.78%) with vaginal infection and 7054 (45.22%) without. In patients with vaginal infections, a single infection was observed in 69.72% (5959/8547) of them, and mixed infection was observed in 30.28% (2588/8547). The differences in age and inflammation grade between the infection and no-infection groups were statistically significant (all P < 0.001). In addition, multiple types of vaginitis could be diagnosed in patients with mixed infections.

CONCLUSIONS

About half of the Chinese women with abnormal vaginal secretions are positive for pathogens in the study period. Patients' age and inflammation grade are associated with co-infection. From the public health perspective, this study suggests that the importance of vaginal hygiene should be enforced in Chinese women.

Combining Essential Oils with Each Other and with Clotrimazole Prevents the Formation of Candida Biofilms and Eradicates Mature Biofilms

Fungal infections by Candida spp. are opportunistic and most often occur in individuals with some predisposing factor. Essential oils (EO) have anti-Candida potential, being a therapeutic alternative to be explored, especially for superficial and mucosal candidiasis. The objective was to analyze the synergistic potential between the EO of Citrus limon, Cupressus sempervirens, Litsea cubeba and Melaleuca alternifolia, and each of them with clotrimazole, to inhibit in vitro the formation and eradication of Candida spp. biofilms. Added to this, the survival of Caenorhabditis elegans was evaluated after exposure to EO, clotrimazole and their synergistic combinations. Anti-Candida activity was determined by microdilution for the substances alone and in EO−EO and EO−clotrimazole combinations. The combinations were performed by the checkerboard method, and the reduction in the metabolic activity of biofilms was determined by the viability of MTT/menadione. C. elegans larvae survival was evaluated after 24 h of exposure to EO, clotrimazole and synergistic combinations. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of EO ranged from 500 to >4000 µg/mL. The lowest MIC (500 µg/mL) was for C. sempervirens and L. cubeba on a C. krusei isolate; for clotrimazole, the MIC ranged from 0.015 to 0.5 µg/mL. Biofilm inhibition and eradication both ranged from 1000 to >4000 µg/mL. The lethal concentration (LC50) of C. limon, L. cubeba and M. alternifolia was 2000 µg/mL for C. elegans, while for C. sempervirens and clotrimazole, it was not determined within the concentration limits tested. In combination, more than 85% of the larvae survived M. alternifolia−clotrimazole, M. alternifolia−L. cubeba, C. sempervirens−clotrimazole and C. sempervirens−C. limon combinations. This study is the first, to our knowledge, to present a synergistic relationship of EO−EO and EO−clotrimazole combinations on Candida spp. biofilms.

Evaluation of the Genital Hygiene Behavior and Related Factors of Women Aged 15-49

Aim: Approximately one million people in the world are exposed to urogenital tract infections every year and at least 75% of women have a history of genital infection. The frequency of vaginal infections in women aged 15-49 in Turkey is known to be 35-68%. Genital infections can be asymptomatic and can cause negativity in sexual and family life. Therefore, it is important to take preventive measures. Mentioning correct genital hygiene behaviors in the training and consultancy services provided by healthcare professionals helps people to increase their awareness. In our study, we aimed to evaluate women's genital hygiene behaviors and related factors. Methods: Our study was carried out with 457 women between the ages of 15-49 in the Gynecology Outpatient Clinic of Nisa Hospital. The socio-demographic characteristics and gynecological characteristics of the subjects were collected by face-to-face interviews using the questionnaire form that consisted of 20 questions and the “Genital Hygiene Behavior Inventory”. The IBM SPSS version 22 program was used for statistical analysis. Results: This study was conducted with 457 women. A significant negative correlation was found between the Genital Hygiene Behavior Inventory score and the number of pregnancies and number of children (p=0.028, r=-0.128, p=0.037, r=-0.128, respectively), and a significant positive correlation was found between education status, income status, and having children (p=0.010, p=0.000, p=0.007, respectively). Participants who stated that they had the knowledge and received this information from doctors and/or nurses had higher Genital Hygiene Behavior Inventory scores. Conclusion: Questioning genital complaints of women by all healthcare professionals, determining hygiene behaviors, and correcting erroneous practices will positively affect urogenital health. Real-World Practices and Attitudes Towards Intimate Self- Care: Results From An International Women's Survey

OBJECTIVE

Vulvovaginal health is important to women's overall health, fertility, sexuality, self-perception, self-confidence and intimacy. It is important to identify the existing perceptions and levels of knowledge about intimate care practices from women in different countries, and with different cultures, religions, and perspectives to help women overcome barriers to optimal intimate care.

METHODS

An anonymous online survey about general and intimate hygiene routines/habits was distributed across 10 countries (England, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Russia, China, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand). The sample consisted of around 10,000 women (aged 18 to 60 years) recruited through an online panel.

RESULTS

The survey indicates that for many women, cleaning the intimate area is not just about hygiene, but also about taking care of themselves. Intimate care practices, performed daily, varies widely among the countries (from 38% to 91%). Italy, Philippines Portugal, Russia and Thailand were the countries with higher percentage. Intimate care is mainly associated with hygiene and health benefit, but interestingly women engage in intimate care more often with age. Most women worldwide are comfortable talking about female genitalia but still consider it a taboo topic, particularly among younger generations. Asian countries continue to carry negative connotations.

CONCLUSIONS

This survey is the first of its kind for number of women involved in this research and for multi-cultural design. Women perceive that practicing intimate care positively impacts their health and wellbeing. However, intimate care is still not one of the most frequent daily routines for many women.
