Self-Efficacy, Internet Self-Efficacy, and Proxy Efficacy as Predictors of the Use of Digital Social and Health Care Services Among Mental Health Service Users in Finland: A Cross-Sectional Study

User Experience of Persons Using Ingestible Sensor-Enabled Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis to Prevent HIV Infection: Cross-Sectional Survey Study

Background

A digital health technology's success or failure depends on how it is received by users.

objectives

We conducted a user experience (UX) evaluation among persons who used the Food and Drug Administration-approved Digital Health Feedback System incorporating ingestible sensors (ISs) to capture medication adherence, after they were prescribed oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection. We performed an association analysis with baseline participant characteristics, to see if "personas" associated with positive or negative UX emerged.

Methods

UX data were collected upon exit from a prospective intervention study of adults who were HIV negative, prescribed oral PrEP, and used the Digital Health Feedback System with IS-enabled tenofovir disoproxil fumarate plus emtricitabine (IS-Truvada). Baseline demographics; urine toxicology; and self-report questionnaires evaluating sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), self-efficacy, habitual self-control, HIV risk perception (Perceived Risk of HIV Scale 8-item), and depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-8) were collected. Participants with ≥28 days in the study completed a Likert-scale UX questionnaire of 27 questions grouped into 4 domain categories: overall experience, ease of use, intention of future use, and perceived utility. Means and IQRs were computed for participant total and domain subscores, and linear regressions modeled baseline participant characteristics associated with UX responses. Demographic characteristics of responders versus nonresponders were compared using the Fisher exact and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests.

Results

Overall, 71 participants were enrolled (age: mean 37.6, range 18-69 years; n=64, 90% male; n=55, 77% White; n=24, 34% Hispanic; n=68, 96% housed; and n=53, 75% employed). No demographic differences were observed in the 63 participants who used the intervention for ≥28 days. Participants who completed the questionnaire were more likely to be housed (52/53, 98% vs 8/10, 80%; P=.06) and less likely to have a positive urine toxicology (18/51, 35% vs 7/10, 70%; P=.08), particularly methamphetamine (4/51, 8% vs 4/10, 40%; P=.02), than noncompleters. Based on IQR values, ≥75% of participants had a favorable UX based on the total score (median 3.78, IQR 3.17-4.20), overall experience (median 4.00, IQR 3.50-4.50), ease of use (median 3.72, IQR 3.33-4.22), and perceived utility (median 3.72, IQR 3.22-4.25), and ≥50% had favorable intention of future use (median 3.80, IQR 2.80-4.40). Following multipredictor modeling, self-efficacy was significantly associated with the total score (0.822, 95% CI 0.405-1.240; P<.001) and all subscores (all P<.05). Persons with more depressive symptoms reported better perceived utility (P=.01). Poor sleep was associated with a worse overall experience (-0.07, 95% CI -0.133 to -0.006; P=.03).

Conclusions

The UX among persons using IS-enabled PrEP (IS-Truvada) to prevent HIV infection was positive. Association analysis of baseline participant characteristics linked higher self-efficacy with positive UX, more depressive symptoms with higher perceived utility, and poor sleep with negative UX.

Prediction of self-efficacy in recognizing deepfakes based on personality traits

Background: While deepfake technology is still relatively new, concerns are increasing as they are getting harder to spot. The first question we need to ask is how good humans are at recognizing deepfakes - the realistic-looking videos or images that show people doing or saying things that they never actually did or said generated by an artificial intelligence-based technology. Research has shown that an individual's self-efficacy correlates with their ability to detect deepfakes. Previous studies suggest that one of the most fundamental predictors of self-efficacy are personality traits. In this study, we ask the question: how can people's personality traits influence their efficacy in recognizing deepfakes? Methods: Predictive correlational design with a multiple linear regression data analysis technique was used in this study. The participants of this study were 200 Indonesian young adults. Results: The results showed that only traits of Honesty-humility and Agreeableness were able to predict the efficacy, in the negative and positive directions, respectively. Meanwhile, traits of Emotionality, Extraversion, Conscientiousness, and Openness cannot predict it. Conclusion: Self-efficacy in spotting deepfakes can be predicted by certain personality traits.

Learning digital skills online: empowering older adults through one-to-one, online digital training provision

Introduction

Digital exclusion, through lack of access and poor digital skills, can have an adverse impact on daily living. Not only did the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically impact the necessity of technology in our daily lives, but also reduced the availability of digital skills programmes. This study aimed to explore perceived facilitators and barriers of a digital skills programme that was delivered remotely (online) and to reflect on this form of training as a possible alternative to traditional face-to-face models.

Methods

Individual interviews were carried out with programme participants and the programme instructor.

Results

Two themes were generated from this data: (a) Creating a unique learning environment; and (b) Encouraging further learning.

Discussion

Barriers to digital delivery were evident, however, the individual and personalized delivery empowered participants within their own learning, supporting individuals to learn skills relevant to them and to continue their digital learning journey.

Evaluation of Self-Sufficiency, Perceived Social Support, and Meaning in Life in Individuals Diagnosed with Serious Mental Illnesses

Objective: It was aimed to determine the levels of self-sufficiency, perceived social support, and meaning in life of individuals diagnosed with serious mental illnesses and to evaluate the relationships between these parameters. Methods: The sample of this descriptive study consisted of 168 individuals who were diagnosed with serious mental illnesses and volunteered to participate in the study, who applied to the Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic in July-October 2021. The data were collected with the Introductory Information Form, the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support (MDPSS), the General Self-Sufficiency (GSS), and the Meaning in Life Scales (MLS). The data were evaluated with Mann-Whitney U, Kruskall Wallis tests, Spearman Correlation, and Regression analysis, and the confidence interval was accepted as 95 and significance as p&lt;0.05 in all analyzes. Results: The participants' levels of meaning in life, social support, and self-sufficiency were found to be moderate. When the ML and MDPSS scores were examined, a significant positive strong (p&lt;0.05) relationship was found between all sub-dimensions of the scales. When the ML and GSS scores were examined, no relationship was found between the sub-dimension of seeking meaning in life and the sub-dimension of persistence, while a strong positive relationship was found between all other sub-dimensions (p&lt;0.005). When the MDPSS and GSS scores were examined, a strong positive (p&lt;0.05) relationship was found between all sub-dimensions of the scales. When the mediating role of Social Support was examined, it was concluded that social support was a partial mediator between self-sufficiency and feelings of meaning in life. Conclusion: It was seen that the concepts examined in the study affected each other in a positive way and social support played a mediating role. The treatment processes of individuals should be supported within the scope of these relationships, and the relationships between meaning in life and self-sufficiency levels of individuals diagnosed with serious mental illnesses should be examined in detail.

The Effect of Critical Thinking on Translation Technology Competence Among College Students: The Chain Mediating Role of Academic Self-Efficacy and Cultural Intelligence

Background

It is increasingly essential for translators to possess a high level of technological proficiency to succeed in their work, as technology is becoming an integral part and common practice of the translation industry. Several previous studies found that critical thinking, academic self-efficacy, and cultural intelligence independently influenced the translation competence of college students. However, the underlying psychological mechanism through which these salient factors affect student translators' technology competence has not been fully explored. Therefore, this research sought to examine the systematic interactions between critical thinking, academic self-efficacy, cultural intelligence, and translation technology competence among college students.

Methods

This study adopted an empirical approach to collect data from 663 seniors from 7 colleges in China. The questionnaires of the Critical Thinking Disposition Scale (CTDS), General Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (GASE), Short Form measure of Cultural Intelligence (SFCQ), and Translation Technology Competence Scale (TTCS) were used for the online survey. The quantitative data were investigated by employing descriptive statistics with SPSS 27, covariance-based structural equation modelling with AMOS 24 to test the proposed hypotheses by assessing relationships between observed and latent variables, and bootstrap method with PROCESS 3.5 to examine the mediating effects.

Results

Critical thinking, academic self-efficacy, and cultural intelligence were significant predictors of students' translation technology competence. Additionally, academic self-efficacy and cultural intelligence acted as independent and chain mediators in the relationship between critical thinking and student translators' technology competence.

Conclusion

The findings provide valuable insight into how psychological factors, including critical thinking, academic self-efficacy, and cultural intelligence, can impact students' competence in translation technology. This study contributes to future research and practices that seek to understand how these psychological factors can be leveraged to promote students' success in translation technologies.

What Determines the Acceptance and Use of eHealth by Older Adults in Poland?

An aging population is considered a major challenge for governments and healthcare planners. eHealth is perceived as a tool with the potential to ensure efficient healthcare. Moreover, eHealth services may help older adults to maintain longer life in good health. However, there are still several challenges to the large-scale implementation of these solutions among older adults. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore determinants of the acceptance and use of eHealth by older adults in Poland. Data was collected by the questionnaire, and the UTAUT model was employed. This research covered older adults aged 60 to 69. The analysis of the results using nested regression analysis showed that performance expectancy has a strong significance on the older adults' acceptance and use of eHealth, followed by effort expectancy and social influence. In contrast, facilitating conditions do not have a significant influence on the acceptance and use of eHealth. These findings may also be beneficial for the government to provide relative policies to support the development and usage of eHealth services as well as for the healthcare devices industry to design more older adult-oriented products.

The behavioral intention to adopt mobile health services: The moderating impact of mobile self-efficacy

This study explored the moderating impact of mobile self-efficacy on the adoption of mobile health services. The UTAUT was used as the theoretical foundation for this study. The results have indicated that mobile self-efficacy was significant in moderating the impact of both performance expectancy (β = -0.005, p < 0.05) and effort expectancy (β = -010, p < 0.05) on the adoption of mobile health services. In addition, it was revealed to our surprise that both performance (β = 0.521, t = 9.311, p > 0.05) and effort expectancy (β = 0.406, t = 7.577, p > 0.05) do not determine the behavioral intention to use mobile health services. Effort expectancy and behavioral intention to use were also, respectively, not significant in influencing performance expectancy (β = 0.702, t = 12.601, p > 0.05) and intention to recommend the adoption of mobile health services (β = 0.866, t = 13.814, p > 0.05). Mobile self-efficacy, however, was found to significantly predict the citizen's intention to recommend the adoption of mobile health services (β = 0.139, t = 2.548, p < 0.05). The implications of these findings on mobile health are discussed.

Digitization in health-related self-help – Results of an online survey among self-help organizations in Germany

Background

Nowadays, much hope and expectations are associated with digitization in the health sector. The digital change also affects health-related self-help. A nationwide survey of self-help organizations (SHOs) aimed to show chances and limitations in the use of interactive IT tools like webforums, online meetings or social media as well as digital infrastructures for their organizational management. In this survey, we also determined whether SHO staff themselves have support and qualification needs with regard to this topic.

Design

The online survey was conducted between 14 November and 8 December 2019, i.e., immediately before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The questionnaire consisted of 50 questions consisting of 180 single items which could be answered in 30–40 min. After two reminder letters, 119 questionnaires of the SHOs were gathered and analysed.

Results

SHOs already have a lot of experience with digital media/tools (e.g., own homepage, social media, cloud computing). Some tools are attested a “high” or “very high” benefit by more than 80% of users. Perceived benefits, however, are also facing a number of problems, ranging from lack of resources to data protection issues. Despite, or even because of the limits of digitization, there is great desire and need for support and further training in SHOs (and self-help groups).

Conclusions

At many points in the survey it was shown that digital media can be a useful extension of “traditional” collective self-help. Taking into account the risks and limitations associated with digital tools, SHOs can be central stakeholders in digitization in health-related self-help.
