The degradation of paraben preservatives: Recent progress and sustainable approaches toward photocatalysis

Parabens are a class of compounds primarily used as antimicrobial preservatives in pharmaceutical products, cosmetics, and foodstuff. Their widely used field leads to increasing concentrations detected in various environmental matrices like water, soil, and sludges, even detected in human tissue, blood, and milk. Treatment techniques, including chemical advanced oxidation, biological degradation, and physical adsorption processes, have been widely used to complete mineralization or to degrade parabens into less complicated byproducts. All kinds of processes were reviewed to give a completed picture of parabens removal. In light of these treatment techniques, advanced photocatalysis, which is emerging rapidly and widely as an economical, efficient, and environmentally-friendly technique, has received considerable attention. TiO₂-based and non-TiO₂-based photocatalysts play an essential role in parabens degradation. The effect of experimental parameters, such as the concentration of targeted parabens, concentration of photocatalyst, reaction time, and initial solution pH, even the presence of radical scavengers, are surveyed and compared from the literature. Some representative parabens such as methylparaben, propylparaben, and benzylparaben have been successfully studied the reaction pathways and their intermediates in their degradation process. As reported in the literature, the degradation of parabens involves the production of highly reactive species, mainly hydroxyl radicals. These reactive radicals would attack the paraben preservatives, break, and finally mineralize them into simpler inorganic and nontoxic molecules. Concluding perspectives on the challenges and opportunities for photocatalysis toward parabens remediation are also intensively highlighted.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of rGO-TiO2 Composites as High-Performance UV Photocatalysts for Ethylparaben Degradation

A series of reduced graphene oxide-TiO2 composites (rGO-TiO2) were prepared by hydrothermal treatment using graphite and titanium isopropoxide as raw materials. The structural, surface, electronic, and optical properties of the prepared composites were extensively characterized by N2 adsorption, FTIR, XRD, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, and DRS. GO was found to be effectively reduced and TiO2 to be in pure anatase phase in all composites obtained. Finally, experiments were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of these new materials as photocatalysts in the degradation of ethylparaben (EtP) by UV radiation. According to the band-gap energies obtained (ranging between 3.09 eV for 4% rGO-TiO2 to 2.55 eV for 30% rGO-TiO2), the rGO-TiO2 composites behave as semiconductor materials. The photocatalytic activity is highest with a rGO content of 7 wt% (7% rGO-TiO2), being higher than observed for pure TiO2 (Eg = 3.20 eV) and achieving 98.6% EtP degradation after only 40 min of treatment. However, the degradation yield decreases with higher percentages of rGO. Comparison with rGO-P25 composites showed that a better photocatalytic performance in EtP degradation is obtained with synthesized TiO2 (rGO-TiO2), probably due to the presence of the rutile phase (14.1 wt %) in commercial P25.

Sonocatalytic degradation of butylparaben in aqueous phase over Pd/C nanoparticles

In the present work, the sonocatalytic degradation of butylparaben was investigated using Pd immobilized on carbon black as the sonocatalyst. The presence of 25 mg/L 10Pd/C significantly increased the removal rate of butylparaben and the observed kinetic constant increased from 0.0126 to 0.071 min^-1, while the synergy index between sonolysis and adsorption was 70.7%. The BP degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with the apparent kinetic constant decreased from 0.071 to 0.030 min^-1 when the initial concentration of butylparaben increased from 0.5 to 2 mg/L. The process was being favored slightly under alkaline conditions. The presence of organic matter (20 mg/L humic acid) reduced the apparent kinetic constant more than two times. The addition of chlorides up to 250 mg/L did not significantly reduce the rate of reaction, while the presence of 250 mg/L bicarbonates reduced the observed kinetic constant from 0.071 to 0.0472 min^-1. The prepared catalyst retains the efficiency after five subsequent experiments since the apparent kinetic constant was only slightly decreased from 0.071 to 0.059 min^-1.

Parabens abatement from surface waters by electrochemical advanced oxidation with boron doped diamond anodes

The removal efficiency of four commonly-used parabens by electrochemical advanced oxidation with boron-doped diamond anodes in two different aqueous matrices, namely ultrapure water and surface water from the Guadiana River, has been analyzed. Response surface methodology and a factorial, composite, central, orthogonal, and rotatable (FCCOR) statistical design of experiments have been used to optimize the process. The experimental results clearly show that the initial concentration of pollutants is the factor that influences the removal efficiency in a more remarkable manner in both aqueous matrices. As a rule, as the initial concentration of parabens increases, the removal efficiency decreases. The current density also affects the removal efficiency in a statistically significant manner in both aqueous matrices. In the water river aqueous matrix, a noticeable synergistic effect on the removal efficiency has been observed, probably due to the presence of chloride ions that increase the conductivity of the solution and contribute to the generation of strong secondary oxidant species such as chlorine or HClO/ClO ^-. The use of a statistical design of experiments made it possible to determine the optimal conditions necessary to achieve total removal of the four parabens in ultrapure and river water aqueous matrices.

Sonochemical degradation of ethyl paraben in environmental samples: Statistically important parameters determining kinetics, by-products and pathways

The sonochemical degradation of ethyl paraben (EP), a representative of the parabens family, was investigated. Experiments were conducted at constant ultrasound frequency of 20 kHz and liquid bulk temperature of 30 °C in the following range of experimental conditions: EP concentration 250-1250 μg/L, ultrasound (US) density 20-60 W/L, reaction time up to 120 min, initial pH 3-8 and sodium persulfate 0-100mg/L, either in ultrapure water or secondary treated wastewater. A factorial design methodology was adopted to elucidate the statistically important effects and their interactions and a full empirical model comprising seventeen terms was originally developed. Omitting several terms of lower significance, a reduced model that can reliably simulate the process was finally proposed; this includes EP concentration, reaction time, power density and initial pH, as well as the interactions (EP concentration)×(US density), (EP concentration)×(pHo) and (EP concentration)×(time). Experiments at an increased EP concentration of 3.5mg/L were also performed to identify degradation by-products. LC-TOF-MS analysis revealed that EP sonochemical degradation occurs through dealkylation of the ethyl chain to form methyl paraben, while successive hydroxylation of the aromatic ring yields 4-hydroxybenzoic, 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acids. By-products are less toxic to bacterium V. fischeri than the parent compound.

Kinetics of ethyl paraben degradation by simulated solar radiation in the presence of N-doped TiO2 catalysts

Ethyl paraben (EP), an emerging micro-pollutant representative of the parabens family, has been subject to photocatalytic degradation under simulated solar radiation at a photon flux of 1.3·10(-4) E/(m(2) s). Six nitrogen-doped titania catalysts synthesized by annealing a sol-gel derived TiO2 powder under ammonia flow and their un-doped counterparts, calcined in air at different temperatures in the range 450-800 °C, were compared under solar and visible light and the most active one (N-doped TiO2 calcined at 600 °C) was used for further tests. Experiments were performed at EP concentrations between 150 and 900 μg/L, catalyst loadings between 100 and 1000 mg/L, pH between 3 and 9, different matrices (ultrapure water, water spiked with humic acids or bicarbonates, drinking water and secondary treated wastewater) and hydrogen peroxide between 10 and 100 mg/L. For EP concentrations up to 300 μg/L, the degradation rate can be approached by first order kinetics but then shifts to lower order as the concentration increases. The rate increases linearly with catalyst loading up to 750 mg/L and hydrogen peroxide up to 100 mg/L. Near-neutral (pH = 6.5-7.5) and alkaline conditions (pH = 9) do not affect degradation, which is reduced at acidic pH. The presence of humic acids at 10-20 mg/L impedes degradation due to the competition with EP for the oxidizing species and this is more pronounced in actual wastewater matrices. UPLC-ESI-HRMS and HPLC-DAD were employed to follow EP concentration changes, as well as identify and quantify transformation by-products during the early stages of the reaction. Five such products were successfully detected and, based on their concentration-time profiles, a reaction network for the degradation of EP is proposed. Hydroxyl radical reactions appear to prevail during the initial steps as evidenced by the rapid formation of hydroxylated and dealkylated intermediates.

Occurrence, fate and effects of Di (2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate in wastewater treatment plants: a review

Phthalates, such as Di (2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate (DEHP) are compounds extensively used as plasticizer for long time around the world. Due to the extensive usage, DEHP is found in many surface waters (0.013-18.5 μg/L), wastewaters (0.716-122 μg/L), landfill leachate (88-460 μg/L), sludge (12-1250 mg/kg), soil (2-10 mg/kg). DEHP is persistent in the environment and the toxicity of the byproducts resulting from the degradation of DEHP sometime exacerbates the parent compound toxicity. Water/Wastewater treatment processes might play a key role in delivering safe, reliable supplies of water to households, industry and in safeguarding the quality of water in rivers, lakes and aquifers. This review addresses state of knowledge concerning the worldwide production, occurrence, fate and effects of DEHP in the environment. Moreover, the fate and behavior of DEHP in various treatment processes, including biological, physicochemical and advanced processes are reviewed and comparison (qualitative and quantitative) has been done between the processes. The trends and perspectives for treatment of wastewaters contaminated by DEHP are also analyzed in this review.
