Impact of Parents and Peers Smoking on Tobacco Consumption Behavior of University Students

Attitudes and practices related to smoking among university students in Thailand

Objective: To investigate attitudes and practices toward smoking among university students and to identify associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,299 students from five public universities in Thailand. Factor analysis and multiple regression were used for analysis. Results: A higher score of anti-smoking attitude was associated with female gender, majoring in science, living on campus, having a father with primary or secondary school, and those whose father was employed in the private sector. A more positive perceptions about smoking was associated with male gender, having a family income of 30,001-50,000 baht, and having a smoking friend. High positive preventive practice score was associated with those who came from rural areas, having a mother who was self-employed, and having a smoking family member. Conclusions: Although students showed strong anti-smoking attitudes, their preventive practices were poor. These findings should be taken into consideration when developing preventive smoking programs.

Cigarette Smoking among Medical Students from the Western Balkan

University student's smoking is a significant public health problem. It is estimated that, globally, every fifth medical student is a smoker. So far, no research dealing with cigarette smoking among medical students has been conducted in the countries of the Western Balkans. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and risk factors of cigarette smoking among Western Balkans medical students. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2452 students from 14 medical faculties in the Western Balkans (Republic of Slovenia, Republic of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of North Macedonia and Republic of Serbia). The data were gathered through an online survey. There were significantly more non-smokers than smokers among medical students. Only gender and parents smoking status were statistically significantly associated with students smoking status. The smokers were more often male students, who lived in urban areas prior their studies, and whose parents were both smokers. With the aim of monitoring and enhancing student population health, it is necessary for public health activists and health officials to continually survey the students' smoking status in order to recognize the smoking influencing factors, and form and take on appropriate activities to improve the prevention of cigarette smoking among students, as well as motivate those who smoke to give up smoking, which would contribute to improving the health of the student population.

The Effect of Peer Education on Decision-Making, Smoking-Promoting Factors, Self-Efficacy, Addiction, and Behavior Change in the Process of Quitting Smoking of Young People

Purpose

The study aims to examine the effect of peer education on the decision to quit smoking, factors that encourage smoking, self-efficacy, addiction, and behavior change in students who apply to the Youth Friendly Center to quit smoking.

Participants and Methods

This research is a Randomized Controlled Trials study. The experimental group consisted of students who were enrolled in the peer education course (n=759). The control group has consisted of students (n=1095) who did not enroll in this course.

Results

Participants in the experimental group to quit smoking, more than the control group (p>0,01). The addiction level of the participants in the experimental group, less than the participants in the control group (p>0,01). According to the scores of the participants in the control group of the participants in the experimental group, the factors that trigger smoking, and the benefit sub-dimension scores in the Decision Balance Scale were low. Loss sub-dimension scores, which show the losses from the harms of smoking, increased significantly in the Self-Efficacy Scale, Behavior Change Process Scale, and Decision Balance Scale (p>0,01).

Conclusion

Peer educators trained by the researcher and her team in the Youth Friendly Center Smoking Quit Program have an important effect in supporting/improving the cognitive and behavioral change processes of university students in smoking quit compared to those who do not receive an education. 94% success of the smoking quit program; Students’ voluntary application to receive professional support, students’ voluntary attendance of the treatment program for 6 months, strong communication and feedback, effective and functional professional counseling, and social support depend on strengthening the program with peer education. Especially with peer education, the development of leadership and role model characteristics made the smoking quit program preferred by students.
