Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical performance of a universal adhesive system containing 0.1 % copper nanoparticles (CuNp) in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) after 6 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS Two hundred and sixteen restorations (n = 54) were randomly placed in 36 participants with at least four NCCLs. Groups included: ER-Cu (adhesive in etch-and-rinse strategy with CuNp), ER-Ct (etch-and-rinse without CuNp), SE-Cu (self-etch with CuNp), and SE-Ct (self-etch without CuNp). Restorations were evaluated at baseline and after 1, 3, 4, and 6 years using the FDI and USPHS criteria. PRIMARY OUTCOME fracture of material and retention. Examiners and patients were blinded to group assignment. RESULTS After 6 years, 104 restorations were analyzed (ER-Cu 24, ER-Ct 29, SE-Cu 27, SE-Ct 24). Fourteen restorations loss retention (ER-Cu 6, ER-Ct 1, SE-Cu 2, SE-Ct 7). Retention rates (95 % confidence interval) were 79.3 % (61.6 - 90.1) for ER-Cu; 97.0 % (83.3 - 99.4) for ER-Ct; 93.1 % (78.1 - 98.1) for SE-Cu; and 76.7 % (59.1 - 88.2) for SE-Ct, with statistical differences between SE-Cu vs. ER-Ct, and SE-Ct vs. ER-Ct (p < 0.05). Thirty-one restorations (ER-Cu 6, ER-Ct 5, SE-Cu 9, SE-Ct 11) showed minor marginal staining, and forty-one restorations (ER-Cu 8, ER-Ct 10, SE-Cu 11, SE-Ct 12) presented minimal marginal adaptation defects (p > 0.05). No significant differences were found for other secondary parameters (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION This is the first 6-year clinical trial showing the long-term behavior of a universal adhesive system in NCCLs. The addition of CuNp does not affect the clinical performance of the universal adhesive.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review assessed the morphological characteristics of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL), among clinical and ex-vivo studies assessed by observational and imaging methods. DESIGN The search strategy was conducted on four online databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science) and grey literature (Google Scholar and OpenGrey). The study selection was performed by three reviewers from March to September (2023). The eligibility criteria were established according to the PICO strategy and included NCCL, morphological characteristics and clinical and ex-vivo study designs. The data extraction considered general data that identifies the study, evaluation method, parameter to assess the outcome and the main results for each study. The risk of bias was evaluated using Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool, and a personalized tool. RESULTS The search resulted in 252 studies. A total of 14 studies were included. Prevalence of NCCLs ranged from 3.5 %to 77.78 % with a higher presence in premolars. Common characteristics were wear facets, occluded tubules or cracks, occlusal stress, scratch marks, dimples and craters, structure loss, and dentin sclerosis, which appear more often on buccal surface and were generally classified as wedge-shaped, saucer-shaped. Etiological hypothesis was mainly related to multifactorial factors. In most of the studies, the risk of bias was classified as high. CONCLUSIONS The morphological characteristics of NCCL showed a wide range of descriptions regarding appearance, prevalence, lesion-related measures, and macro and microscopic descriptions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical performance of posterior restorations over wet and dry dentin with an etch-and-rinse adhesive after 36 months of clinical service. METHODS Forty-five participants were recruited, each one had at least two posterior teeth that needed restoration. Ninety restorations were placed on Class I or Class II cavities. For the restoration protocol, a simplified etch-and-rinse adhesive (Adper Single Bond 2) was applied over wet (WD) or dry dentin (DD) and later restored with a bulk-fill composite (Filtek Bulk Fill) under rubber dam isolation. Each restoration was evaluated using the World Dental Federation (FDI) criteria after 6, 12, and 36 months of clinical service, regarding the following principal restoration characteristics: postoperative sensitivity, marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, fracture of material and retention, and recurrence of caries. Kruskal Wallis analysis of variance rank (α = 0.05) and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS After 36 months of clinical evaluation, no significant difference between groups was observed in each FDI criterion (p > 0.05). Twenty restorations (WD=10, DD=10) showed minor marginal staining, and twenty-two restorations (WD=11, DD=11) presented small marginal adaptation defects (p > 0.05). Four restorations were lost (WD = 2, DD = 2) and the fracture rates (95% confidence interval) were 94.9% for each one, without significant difference between wet and dry dentin (p > 0.05). SIGNIFICANCE The degree of dentin moisture does not seem to affect the clinical performance of a simplified etch-and-rinse adhesive in posterior restorations when the adhesive is applied vigorously over the dentine surface.

Abstract
Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of dentin roughening and the type of composite resin used (either bulk-fill flowable or nanohybrid) on the restoration of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) with an 18-month follow-up period. Materials and Methods This prospective split-mouth study included 36 patients, each with a minimum of 4 NCCLs. For each patient, 4 types of restorations were performed: unroughened dentin with nanohybrid composite, unroughened dentin with bulk-fill flowable composite, roughened dentin with nanohybrid composite, and roughened dentin with bulk-fill flowable composite. A universal bonding agent (Tetric N Bond Universal) was applied in self-etch mode for all groups. The restorations were subsequently evaluated at 6, 12, and 18 months in accordance with the criteria set by the FDI World Dental Federation. Inferential statistics were computed using the Friedman test, with the level of statistical significance established at 0.05. Results The 4 groups exhibited no significant differences in relation to fracture and retention, marginal staining, marginal adaptation, postoperative hypersensitivity, or the recurrence of caries at any follow-up point. Conclusions Within the limitations of the present study, over an 18-month follow-up period, no significant difference was present in the clinical performance of bulk-fill flowable and nanohybrid composite restorations of non-carious cervical lesions. This held true regardless of whether dentin roughening was performed.

Abstract
With the continuous development of adhesive technology leading to a wide variety of bonding systems in the market, clinicians are often faced with a vast number of systems to choose from. Although research and manufacture of bonding systems is constantly progressing, the focus has generally been on simplifying the bonding process by reducing the number of clinical steps, with little emphasis on evidence-based performance. This article draws attention to the current strategies of common commercially available products to guide clinicians during bonding system selection and application.

Abstract
Aim Four bonding agents and a composite restorative resin were evaluated in patients having noncarious cervical defects. Materials and Methods This clinical trial was conducted in patients having at least 4 noncarious cervical defects in posterior teeth evaluating the clinical effectiveness in relation to retention, discoloration at margins, and postoperative sensitivity of 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th generations of bonding agents over a period of baseline, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months. Statistical Analysis Data were recorded and put into statistical analysis using Chi-square tests. Results At 24 months, retention rate was found out to be 92.6% for the 7th generation which was better than 5th (66.7%) and 6th (70.4%) generation whereas significant marginal discoloration was seen at 6 months follow-up in which 5th generation showed maximum results. However, all the four generations have an equal score of postoperative sensitivity at all the time intervals. Conclusions The 7th generation adhesives performed better than other generations in terms of retention. Changes in marginal discoloration were detected at 6 months with maximum score in 5th generation adhesives.

Abstract
Laboratory investigations are essential models responsible for science development. However, laboratory discoveries must be confirmed in a clinical environment where many known and unknown variables and complex mechanisms are involved. Using conclusions from laboratory studies to make clinical recommendations can lead to widespread "unreliable truths" or so-called myths in any field of knowledge. These myths may increase the costs (financial and time) or even cause harm (side effects) that would be unnecessary, given that the current protocol or conduct was previously evaluated in a more complex and complete clinical setting. This article will discuss certain myths in dentin bonding that may influence clinical decision-making, bringing some principles of evidence-based practice to allow a more critical evaluation of the literature findings.

A randomized clinical study of the performance of self-etching adhesives containing HEMA and 10-MDP on non-carious cervical lesions: A 2-year follow-up study. J Dent 2023; 130:104407. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association of HEMA and 10-MDP in the clinical performance of self-etching adhesives in the restoration of NCCLs during 2-years. MATERIALS AND METHODS 60 restorations were performed in 17 volunteers and randomized into three groups: G1 (n = 20) - Prime and Bond Universal (10-MDP); G2 (n = 20) - Optibond All-in-One (HEMA); and G3 (n = 20) - Clearfil SE (10-MDP and HEMA). No cavity preparation was performed. After 2 years, the restorations were evaluated using the modified USPHS criteria for retention, marginal adaptation/ staining, postoperative sensitivity and secondary caries. The results were analyzed using Fisher's exact test and Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS All groups showed 100% retention rate, except G1, who lost two restorations (p > 0.05). Regarding marginal adaptation, G1 showed greater deficiency, as only eight restorations (40%) remained intact (p < 0.05). Regarding marginal staining, G1 and G2 showed higher rate, as only 12 restorations (65%) in each one were free of staining (p < 0.05). All groups showed similar results for postoperative sensitivity and secondary caries (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The association of HEMA and 10-MDP monomers in the self-etching adhesives did not influence the clinical performance of the NCCL restorations with respect to retention, postoperative sensitivity, and incidence of secondary caries. However, positively influenced the marginal adaptation and marginal staining at the 2-year follow-up. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The association of HEMA and 10-MDP monomers in the self-etching adhesives positively influence the clinical performance of the NCCL restorations with respect to marginal adaptation and marginal staining.

Abstract
PURPOSE To synthesize the literature regarding noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) and propose clinical guidelines when lesion restoration is indicated. MATERIAL AND METHODS A PubMed search was performed related to NCCL morphology, progression, prevalence, etiology, pathophysiology, and restoration. RESULTS NCCLs form as either rounded (saucerlike) depressions with smooth, featureless surfaces that progress mainly in height or as V-shaped indentations that increase in both height and depth. Prevalence ranges from less than 10% to over 90% and increases with age. Common locations are the facial surfaces of maxillary premolars. They have a multifactorial etiology due to personal habits such as excessive horizontal toothbrushing and consumption of acidic foods and drinks. Occlusal factors have been identified as contributing to the prevalence of NCCLs in some studies, whereas other studies indicate there is no relationship. The concept of abfraction has been proposed whereby mechanical stress from occlusal loading plays a role in the development and progression of NCCLs with publications supporting the concept and others indicating it lacks the required clinical documentation. Regardless of the development mechanism, demineralization occurs and they are one of the most common demineralization diseases in the body. Treatment should be managed conservatively through preventive intervention with restorative treatment delayed until it becomes necessary due to factors such as lesion progression, impact on patient's quality of life, sensitivity, poor esthetics, and food collection may necessitate restoration. Composite resins are commonly used to restore NCCLs although other materials such as glass ionomer and resin-modified glass ionomer are also used. Sclerotic dentin does not etch like normal dentin and therefore it has been recommended to texture the dentin surface with a fine rotary diamond instrument to improve restoration retention. Some clinicians use mechanical retention to increase retention. Beveling of enamel is used to increase the bonding area and retention as well as enhance the esthetic result by gradually creating a color change between the restoration and tooth. Both multistep and single-step adhesives have been used. Dentin etching should be increased to 30 seconds due to the sclerotic dentin with the adhesive agent applied using a light scrubbing motion for 20 seconds but without excessive force that induces substantial bending of a disposable applicator. Both flowable and sculptable composite resins have been successfully used with some clinicians applying and polymerizing a layer of flowable composite resin and then adding an external layer of sculptable composite resin to provide enhanced resistance to wear. When caries is present, silver diamine fluoride has been used to arrest the caries rather than restore the lesion. CONCLUSIONS Noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) form as smooth saucerlike depressions or as V-shaped notches. Prevalence values as high as 90% and as low as 10% have been reported due to habits such as excessive toothbrushing and an acidic diet. Occlusal factors have been proposed as contributing to their presence but it remains controversial. Publications have both supported and challenged the concept of abfraction. They are one of the most common demineralization diseases in the body. Conservative treatment through prevention is recommended with restorative treatment delayed as long as possible. When treatment is needed, composite resins are commonly used with proposed restorative guidelines including texturing the sclerotic dentin, beveling the enamel, potential use of mechanical retention, 30 seconds of acid etching, and use of either multistep or single-step adhesives in conjunction with a light scrubbing motion for 20 seconds without excessive force placed on disposable applicators.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this clinical trial was to evaluate and compare the performances of three different universal adhesives used with a highly filled flowable universal resin composite in the restoration of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) over a 60-month period. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ninety-nine NCCLs were restored at 18 participants. NCCLs were divided into three different universal adhesive groups: Clearfil Universal Bond (CU) (n = 31), iBOND Universal (IU) (n = 33), and G-Premio Bond (GP) (n = 35). Prior to the adhesive procedures, selective enamel etching was performed with 37% phosphoric acid in all experimental groups. Adhesive systems were applied following the manufacturers' instructions, and the lesions were restored with a highly filled flowable resin composite (G-ænial Universal Flo). Restorations were finished and polished immediately after placement. All restorations were scored with regard to retention, marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, sensitivity, surface texture, and color match using modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria after 1 week (baseline) and 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, and 60 months. Statistical analyses were performed using chi-square and McNemar's and Kaplan Meier tests. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS After 60 months, the recall rate was 72.2%. Survival rates of CU, IU, and GP restorations were 87%, 85.2%, and 96.5%, respectively. Five CU (25%), 8 IU (34.8%), and 12 GP (42.9%) restorations exhibit bravo scores for marginal adaptation. However, no differences were seen among them. CU showed lower bravo score than IU and GP for marginal discoloration (CU, 0%; IU, 26.1%; GP, 32.1%). Two CU, 7 IU, and 6 GP restorations showed bravo scores for surface texture, and 2 (9.1%) CU and 1 (3.3%) GP restorations were scored as bravo score for color match (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The tested universal adhesives showed similar success rates during the 60-month follow-up. However, CU showed better clinical performance than IU and GP in terms of marginal adaptation and discoloration. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of different application strategies on the clinical behavior of an MDP-free universal adhesive placed in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) over the course of 36 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-one patients participated in this study (N = 31). One hundred twenty-four restorations were assigned to four groups: We used the self-etch strategy on groups with (SE-et) and without (SET) selective enamel etching, and the etch-and-rinse strategy on groups with dry (ER-D) and moist (ER-M) dentin. After applying the MDP-free universal adhesive (Xeno Select universal adhesive, Dentsply Sirona), cavities were filled using EvoluX composite resin (Dentsply Sirona). The restorations were evaluated at baseline and after 36 months according to World Dental Federation (FDI) and US Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Friedman's repeated-measures analysis of variance rank (α = 0.05) was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS We evaluated the 31 patients after 36 months. Forty-two restorations were lost (ER-D = 5, ER-M = 7, SE-et = 14, SET = 16). The 36-month retention/fracture rates (95% confidence interval) were 83.9% for ER-D, 77.4% for ER-M, 54.9% for SE-et, and 48.4% for SET. ER strategy showed better retention rate than SE strategy (p < 0.05). Thirty-four restorations (ER-D = 6, ER-M = 10, SE-et = 10, SET = 8) showed marginal staining per FDI criteria and 15 restorations (ER-D = 1, ER-M = 2, SE-et = 6, SET = 6) showed marginal staining per USPHS criteria. No restorations showed postoperative sensitivity or recurrence of caries. CONCLUSION The retention rate of Xeno Select universal adhesive was poor, mainly in the self-etch strategy. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of the sonic device on the clinical performance of one-step self-etch adhesive systems in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) after 18 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty patients participated in this study. Eighty restorations were assigned to two groups (n = 40): Sonic application and Manual application. After the adhesive application (iBond Self-Etch, Kulzer, Hanau, Germany), NCCLs were restored using composite resin (Charisma, Kulzer, Hanau, Germany). The restorations were evaluated at baseline and after 18 months both according to the Word Dental Federation (FDI) and the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Friedman repeated measures analysis of variance by rank and Wilcoxon test for significance in each pair were applied (α = 0.05). RESULTS After 18 months, 38 patients were evaluated. Twenty-three restorations were lost (19 for manual vs. 4 for sonic application). The retention rates (95% confidence interval) were 50% (CI 34.8%-65.1%) for manual application and 84.2% (CI 69.6%-92.6%) for sonic application (p < 0.05). Twelve restorations showed marginal staining (nine for manual vs. three for sonic application; FDI, p < 0.05) and nine some marginal discrepancy (seven for manual vs. two for sonic application; FDI, p < 0.05). No restorations showed postoperative sensitivity and caries recurrence at the time. CONCLUSION The sonic application increases the retention rate of iBond Self-Etch after 18 months of clinical evaluation in NCCLs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The application of a simplified self-etch adhesive (iBond Self-Etch) associated to a sonic device seems to be an alternative to improve the clinical behavior in NCCLs.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the prevalence of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) and their association with individual and tooth-related factors in adults from the 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS Participants were interviewed and clinically examined at the age of 31. NCCL was defined as loss of dental tissue without bacterial involvement in the cervical region. Independent variables were the socioeconomic, demographic, behavioural, and clinical characteristics. Associations were tested using a multilevel Poisson regression model. RESULTS Five-hundred and thirty-nine participants were clinically examined, with a 26% prevalence of NCCLs, which were more prevalent in the maxilla (56.5%) and in premolars (72.9%). In the multilevel analysis, women presented lower prevalence than men [prevalence ratio (PR) 0.59 (0.48-0.73)]; those who reported smoking at both 22 and 30 years of age had more NCCLs than those who never smoked [PR 1.65 (1.31-2.07)]; and high-frequency brushers presented higher prevalence than low-frequency brushers [PR 1.26 (1.03-1.55)]. Gingival recession increased 10 times the prevalence of NCCLs [PR 10.03 (8.15-12.35)], while the presence of periodontal pockets (≥4 mm) reduced the prevalence of NCCLs [PR 0.43 (0.28-0.66)]. CONCLUSIONS NCCLs were more prevalent in males, smokers, and those with higher frequency of toothbrushing. While the presence of periodontal pockets was associated with a lower prevalence of NCCLs, gingival recession was a strong clinical indicator for the presence of NCCLs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy of a new light-cured anesthetic gel for pain control in adults undergoing rubber dam isolation for the restorative treatment of noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs). METHODS AND MATERIALS This study was a randomized, split-mouth, triple-blind, controlled trial. The sample comprised 50 adults with at least one pair of NCCLs located in the same arch but on opposite sides. Simple randomization defined the tooth to receive the light-cured tetracaine-based anesthetic gel or the placebo gel. After cotton roll isolation, the gels were applied in the gingival tissue around the tooth with the aid of the applicator tip of a syringe, left in place for 15 seconds, and light-cured for 15 seconds. Then, a #212 clamp was positioned on the tooth. If the patient reported pain, the clamp was removed, the patient filled out a pain intensity form (a 0-10 visual analog scale [VAS] and a 0-4 verbal rating scale [VRS]) and an injectable anesthetic was applied before rubber dam isolation for the restorative procedure. The absolute risk, intensity of pain, and need for rescue anesthesia were analyzed by the McNemar test and the Wilcoxon signed rank test (α=5%). RESULTS The odds ratio [OR] for pain (OR=3.5; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.1 to 14.6; p=0.03) showed lower reports of pain for the light-cured anesthetic gel. One in five patients will benefit from placement of the light-cured anesthetic gel. On average, pain intensity was one VAS unit lower in those using the light-cured anesthetic gel than in those using the placebo gel. For the VRS, the pain intensity for the light-cured anesthetic gel was 0.4 units lower than the pain intensity for the placebo gel (95% CI=-0.9 to 0.07). The OR for rescue anesthesia was 2.5 (95% CI=0.7 to 10.9; p=0.18). CONCLUSIONS The light-cured, tetracaine-based anesthetic gel reduced the absolute risk of pain by 20% in NCCLs.

Abstract
The removal or modification of smear layers that cover the dentin is critical to allow the penetration of adhesive molecules and to ensure a strong bond between resin and dentin. Aiming to establish a model for clinically-relevant dentin-bond testing, we evaluated the effects of smear layers created by abrasives having similar coarseness (180-grit SiC paper; fine-grit diamond bur) and application modes (single application; double application) on the microtensile bond strengths (µTBS) of two currently available universal adhesives (G-Premio Bond; Scotchbond Universal Adhesive) and a two-step self-etch adhesive (Clearfil Megabond 2). Sixty extracted human third molars were used for the μTBS test. Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (α = 0.05). Fracture modes were determined using stereomicroscopy. An additional 24 third molars were prepared for observation of the resin–dentin interface by TEM and adhesive-smear layer interaction by SEM. μTBS was significantly affected by the adhesives and their application modes (p < 0.001), implying that the double application of universal adhesives should be recommended to improve their performance. The effect of smear layers was not significant (p > 0.05), indicating that 180-grit SiC papers could be used to prepare dentin as a substitute for fine-grit diamond burs for dentin-bond testing in laboratory settings.

Abstract
SUMMARY
Objectives:
This study aimed to evaluate the bonding performance of a universal adhesive used according to self-etching or etch-and-rinse protocols in noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) and to compare the two protocols with their respective gold standard techniques.
Methods and Materials:
This randomized, double-blind clinical study enrolled 34 participants who met the inclusion criteria, 29 of whom returned after two years. They received 152 restorations bonded with one of the three adhesives (Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, Adper Single Bond 2, or Clearfil SE Bond) and one of the two bonding techniques tested. The NCCLs were restored with nanocomposite resin (Filtek Supreme). Final contours were done with a fine diamond rotary instrument and polished with rubber points. The restorations were evaluated using the FDI World Dental Federation criteria at baseline (seven days after the restoration procedure), 6, 12, and 24 months. Descriptive statistics, Kruskal-Wallis, Friedman analysis of variance, and least significant difference tests were performed.
Results:
No statistically significant differences were found in esthetics or the functional and biological evaluated criteria among the adhesive systems and techniques.
Conclusions:
The Scotchbond Universal system behaved similarly to the conventional etch-and-rinse or self-etching systems in all the adhesion strategies in the evaluated periods.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This randomized, double-blind clinical trial aimed to evaluate the influence of different dentin surface treatments in noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Twenty-nine patients participated in this study. One hundred sixty-five NCCLs were selected and randomly assigned to three groups: G0 (control group) with phosphoric acid etching for 15 seconds; G1: phosphoric acid etching for 30 seconds; and G2: ultrasound probe applied for 30 seconds on the dentin surface. Class V composite resin restorations were performed (Z350, 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA). The restorations were evaluated at baseline and at six, 12, 24, and 36 months according to the World Dental Federation criteria. Survival curves were obtained using the Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test. Comparisons between groups and times were performed using the McNemar and Chi-square tests (α =0.05). RESULTS: The presence of failures due to retention was statistically different among the groups ( p=0.012), and G0 and G2 showed better clinical performance than did G1. Sensitivity decreased over time in all groups. Marginal discoloration, postoperative sensitivity, and marginal adaptation were not different among the groups ( p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The studied dentin surface treatments showed similar clinical performance to the conventional technique at 36 months in terms of marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, and postoperative sensitivity. In contrast, increased acid-etching time resulted in a higher risk of failure due to retention over time in composite Class V restorations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of two methods of application of a mild one-step self-etch adhesive and composite resin as compared with a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) control restoration in noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs). METHODS: A total of 294 restorations were placed in 56 patients, 98 in each one of the following groups: 1) G-Bond active application combined with Solare-X composite resin (A-1SEA), 2) G-Bond passive application combined with Solare-X composite resin (P-1SEA), and 3) GC II LC RMGIC. The restorations were evaluated at baseline and after six, 12, and 18 months according to the FDI criteria for fractures/retention, marginal adaptation, marginal staining, postoperative sensitivity, and secondary caries. Cumulative failure rates were calculated for each criterion at each recall period. The effect of adhesive, method of application, and recall period were assessed. The Kruskal-Wallis test for intergroup comparison and Friedman and Wilcoxon signed ranks tests for intragroup comparison were used for each criterion ( α=0.05). RESULTS: The retention rates at 18 months were 93.26% for the A-1SEA group, 86.21% for the P-1SEA group, and 90.91% for the RMGIC group. The active application improved the retention rates compared with the passive application of mild one-step self-etch adhesive; however, no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups. Marginal staining was observed in 13 restorations (1 in A-1SEA, 4 in P-1SEA, and 8 in RMGIC) with no significant difference between the groups. The RMGIC group showed a significant increase in marginal staining at 12 and 18 months from the baseline. There was no significant difference between the groups for marginal adaptation, secondary caries, or postoperative sensitivity. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of the study, we can conclude that mild one-step self-etch adhesive followed by a resin composite restoration can be an alternative to RMGIC with similar retention and improved esthetics in restoration of NCCLs. Agitation could possibly benefit the clinical performance of mild one-step self-etch adhesives, but this study did not confirm that the observed benefit was statistically significant.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The literature was reviewed to evaluate the compliance of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) with the CONsolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT ) and the risk of bias of these studies through the Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool (CCRT). RCTs were searched at Cochrane Library, PubMed, and other electronic databases to find studies about adhesive systems for cervical lesions. The compliance of the articles with CONSORT was evaluated using the following scale: 0 = no description, 1 = poor description, and 2 = adequate description. Descriptive analyses about the number of studies by journal, follow-up period, country, and quality assessments were performed with CCRT for assessing risk of bias in RCTs. One hundred thirty-eight RCTs were left for assessment. More than 30% of the studies received scores of 0 or 1. Flow chart, effect size, allocation concealment, and sample size were more critical items, with 80% receiving a score of 0. The overall CONSORT score for the included studies was 15.0 ± 4.8 points, which represents 46.9% of the maximum CONSORT score. A significant difference among countries was observed (p<0.001), as well as range of year (p<0.001). Only 4.3% of the studies were judged as at low risk; 36.2% were classified as having unclear risk and 59.4% as having high risk of bias. The adherence of RCTs evaluating adhesive systems to the CONSORT is low with unclear/high risk of bias.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of dentin surface treatments on the retention rate of resin composite restorations in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). Seven randomized clinical trials were included in this review. Data regarding retention rate, type of surface treatment, and the main characteristics of studies were analyzed. Two reviewers performed a literature search up to December 2016 in eight databases: PubMed (Medline), Lilacs, Ibecs, Web of Science, BBO, Scopus, Scielo and The Cochrane Library. Only clinical trials evaluating dentin surface treatments in resin composite restoration in NCCLs were included. Noncontrolled clinical trials, reviews, editorial letters, case reports, case series and studies published in a language other than English, Portuguese, or Spanish were not included. The included studies evaluated different surface treatments, such as using an adhesive system with a frictional technique, drying the dentin, and removing sclerotic dentin by using a bur and applying EDTA before primer use. The analysis considering the mechanical removal of dentin surface with a bur and the application of an adhesive system in a frictional mode showed these treatments improved retention rates of the resin composite restorations in NCCLs ( p<0.05). There is evidence in the literature suggesting that the mechanical removal of dentin surface with a bur and the application of an adhesive system in a frictional mode could improve the retention rates of resin composite restorations in NCCLs. However, the studies showed high heterogeneity, and additional clinical trials are needed to determine the best dentin treatment option in NCCLs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A scoping review was conducted to explore the use of FDI criteria 10 years after their introduction. The first aim was to compare the amount of studies using the FDI and/or the modified USPHS criteria. The second aim was to analyse the use of the FDI criteria in clinical trials evaluating direct dental restorations. DATA Listing of studies using FDI and/or USPHS criteria per year since 2007. Clinical studies related to the assessment of direct restorations using FDI criteria. SOURCE Two systematic searches - regarding the use of FDI and modified USPHS criteria - were carried out on Medline/Pubmed in order to identify the studies published between 2007 and 2017. Authors of the included articles were contacted to clarify their choice of FDI criteria in their studies. ClinicalTrials.gov database was also queried for the on-going studies that use FDI and modified USPHS criteria. STUDY SELECTION In the first review, all the clinical trials (randomized/non-randomized, controlled, prospective/retrospective studies) that used FDI criteria to evaluate direct restorations on primary or permanent teeth were included. CONCLUSIONS 16.3% of the studies used FDI criteria. The percentage of studies using them increased from 4.5% in 2010 to 50.0% in 2016. In average, 8.5 FDI criteria were used. The most employed criteria were: marginal adaptation (96.7%), staining (90.0%), fracture of material and retention (90.0%), recurrence of caries/erosion/abfraction (90.0%), post-operative sensitivity/tooth vitality (86.7%) and surface luster (60.0%). In addition, among the 27 on-going studies from ClinicalTrials.gov database, 51.9% use FDI criteria (including 87.5% with an open recruitment status). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE FDI criteria were reported as practical (various and freely selectable), relevant (sensitive as well as appropriate to current restorative materials and clinical studies design), standardized (making comparisons between investigations easier). Investigators should go on using them for a better standardization of their clinical judgment, allowing comparisons with other studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical performance of two flowable composites for restoring Class-V non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs), one with novel (ND; N'Durance® Dimer Flow, Septodont) and one with modified conventional matrix composition (FS; Filtek™ Supreme XTE Flow, 3M-ESPE). The null hypothesis was that both flowable composites perform equally regarding clinical quality and survival. METHODS 50 patients received one ND and one FS restoration of NCCLs in premolars using Clearfil Protect Bond (Kuraray) as an adhesive. Restorations were evaluated by two examiners at baseline (BL), 18 and 36 months employing FDI criteria. Non-parametric statistical analyses and χ2 tests were applied (α=0.05). RESULTS 48 patients with both restorations under risk participated in the 36-mo recall. One patient terminated participation after the 18-mo recall. One ND restoration failed at the 18-mo recall (fracture). One FS restoration failed during clinical examination at the 36-mo recall (debonding). 95.8% of restorations each were rated clinically acceptable at 36-mo. No significant differences for all selected FDI criteria were recorded between ND and FS at each examination time point except for the criteria surface staining at 36-mo and marginal staining at 18-mo and 36-mo, where FS showed significantly better results. For each material, no significant differences over time were detected, except for loss of surface lustre for FS (BL to 18 months). SIGNIFICANCE Within the limitations of the study, the null hypothesis that materials perform equally could not be rejected. Both flowable composites performed equally regarding survival and similarly regarding clinical performance.

Abstract
SUMMARY
Purpose: The objective of this double-blind, randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the six-month clinical performance of a new universal adhesive (Xeno Select, Dentsply) in noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) using two evaluation criteria: World Dental Federation (FDI) and the US Public Health Service (USPHS).
Methods and Materials: A total of 124 restorations were randomly placed in 31 patients according to the following groups: ER-D = etch-and-rinse/dry dentin; ER-M = etch-and-rinse/moist dentin; SE-et = selective enamel etching; and SET = self-etch. The composite resin EVOLUX (Dentsply) was placed incrementally. The restorations were evaluated after one week (baseline) and at six months using the FDI and USPHS criteria. Statistical analyses were performed using appropriate tests (α=0.05).
Results: Fifteen restorations were lost or fractured at six months (one for ER-D, three for ER-M, five for SE-et, and six for SET) (p>0.05 at six-month recall). When ER (ER-D and ER-M) was compared with SE (SE-et and SET) there was a significant difference in the retention rate after six months (p=0.001). Marginal staining and postoperative sensitivity to air were only observed in three (one for ER-M and two for SET) and two restorations (two for ER-D) in both evaluation criteria (p>0.05), respectively. Forty-seven restorations were considered to have minor discrepancies in marginal adaptation at the six-month recall using the FDI criteria (13 for ER-D, 10 for ER-M, 11 for SE-et, and 13 for SET; p>0.05 between groups). However, for all groups, a significant difference was detected when baseline and six-month data were compared (p<0.05).
Conclusions: The six-month clinical behavior of Xeno Select Universal Adhesive depends on the bonding strategy used. The universal adhesive did not fulfill the American Dental Association criteria for full approval when used in the self-etch mode.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the 6-year clinical performance of Xeno IV, Xeno III, and XP Bond adhesives in the restoration of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). METHODS This was a randomized controlled clinical trial where 39 participants met the inclusion/exclusion criteria and were enrolled. Lesions restored were notch-shaped NCCLs. Prior to adhesive procedures, NCCLs were roughened. No enamel bevel was placed and no mechanical retention was created. Adhesive systems were applied following manufacturer's instructions and the NCCLs were restored with composite resin (TPH(3)). Restorations were finished immediately after placement and scored with regard to retention, marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, sensitivity, and secondary caries using modified USPHS criteria. Descriptive statistics were performed. Logistic regression models were performed for each outcome separately with compound symmetry correlation structure where teeth were clustered by participants. All analyses were conducted using SAS 9.2. RESULTS The 6-year recall rate was 77.5% of the restorations (76.9% of the participants). No statistical differences were found between adhesives for retention, marginal discoloration, and marginal adaptation. Restorations failed by loss of retention (16.7%, 27.6%, and 11.8% of Xeno IV, Xeno III, and XP Bond restorations, respectively) and marginal discoloration (7.4% of Xeno IV restorations). For every unit increase in restoration volume it was 1.31 (95%C.I. 1.05, 1.63, P=0.01) times more likely that the restoration retention would be maintained. SIGNIFICANCE The tested adhesive systems presented similar clinical performance after six years of service, with annual failure rates of 2.8%, 4.6%, and 2.0% for Xeno IV, Xeno III, and XP Bond, respectively.

Does active application of universal adhesives to enamel in self-etch mode improve their performance? J Dent 2015; 43:1060-1070. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of adhesion strategy on the enamel microshear bond strengths (μSBS), etching pattern, and in situ degree of conversion (DC) of seven universal adhesives. METHODS 84 extracted third molars were sectioned in four parts (buccal, lingual, proximal) and divided into 21 groups, according to the combination of the main factors adhesive (AdheSE Universal [ADU], All-Bond Universal [ABU], Clearfil Universal [CFU], Futurabond U [FBU], G-Bond Plus [GBP], Prime&Bond Elect (PBE), and Scotchbond Universal Adhesive [SBU]), and adhesion strategy (etch-and-rinse, active self-etch, and passive self-etch). Specimens were stored in water (37°C/24h) and tested at 1.0mm/min (μSBS). Enamel-resin interfaces were evaluated for DC using micro-Raman spectroscopy. The enamel-etching pattern was evaluated under a field-emission scanning electron microscope (direct and replica techniques). Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). RESULTS Active self-etch application increased μSBS and DC for five out of the seven universal adhesives when compared to passive application (p<0.001). A deeper enamel-etching pattern was observed for all universal adhesives in the etch-and-rinse strategy. A slight improvement in etching ability was observed in active self-etch application compared to that of passive self-etch application. Replicas of GBP and PBE applied in active self-etch mode displayed morphological features compatible with water droplets. The DC of GBP and PBE were not affected by the application/strategy mode. CONCLUSIONS In light of the improved performance of universal adhesives when applied actively in SE mode, selective enamel etching with phosphoric acid may not be crucial for their adhesion to enamel. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The active application of universal adhesives in self-etch mode may be a practical alternative to enamel etching in specific clinical situations.
