Abstract
PURPOSE This narrative review aimed to survey the clinical outcomes of laminate veneers (LVs), including their survival and success rates. STUDY SELECTION An electronic search of MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar from 2000 to April 2023 was conducted using the keywords "laminate" OR "veneer" OR "porcelain" OR "feldspathic" OR "lithium disilicate" OR "composite resin" OR "zirconia" OR "survival" OR "success." Case reports, case series, reviews, abstracts, in vitro studies, and observational studies were excluded. Five researchers independently evaluated the titles and abstracts of all identified studies. RESULTS A total of 55 studies were identified. None of the studies met the criteria for zirconia LVs. According to the studies in this review, LVs fabricated with feldspathic porcelain, leucite-reinforced glass ceramics (LRG), and lithium disilicate ceramics (LDS) exhibited satisfactory survival and success rates. Furthermore, hydrofluoric acid etching followed by silane priming of the surface of ceramic LVs is necessary for improved clinical outcomes. The extent of dentin exposure significantly decreases the success rate of ceramic LVs. An appropriate adhesive luting process is required to achieve the long-term success of ceramic LVs. Dentin exposure should be minimized or sealed during tooth preparation to achieve a reliable and durable bond between LVs and abutment teeth. CONCLUSIONS Based on this narrative review of the literature, the use of silica-based ceramic feldspathic porcelain, LRG, and LDS is recommended for LVs.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The type of veneer preparation is often chosen according to the patient's tooth structure and occlusion. Taking biomechanics into account in this decision-making process provides the clinician with more technical information on how to improve the clinical longevity of restorations. However, biomechanical analyses of veneer preparation designs are sparse. PURPOSE The purpose of this 3-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis with microcomputed tomography (µCT) data obtained from realistic models was to assess the influence of different preparations for ceramic and composite resin veneers on restoration and resin layer stress distribution. MATERIAL AND METHODS Four replicas of a central incisor were printed and prepared for laminate veneers with 4 different incisal edge designs: shoulder (SH), palatal chamfer (PC), palatal chamfer and oblique fracture involving the distal angle (OF-PC), and palatal chamfer involving horizontal incisal fracture (IF-PC). After fabrication and cementation of the veneers, the restored replicas were assessed with µCT, and 3D finite element models were built. A 100-N load was applied on the palatal surface at 60 and 125 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis. Maximum principal stress and stress distribution on the veneers, cement layer, and tooth structure were calculated and analyzed. RESULTS The SH preparation exhibited better stress distribution than the PC preparation, and the cement layer and the veneer were subjected to lower stress. The IF-PC preparation had better stress distribution than the OF-PC. The shoulder and IF-PC showed higher stress on laminate veneers, but lower stress on the cement layer. Ceramic veneers exhibited lower stress than composite resin veneers. CONCLUSIONS The different incisal preparations for laminate veneers influenced stress distribution on restorations and on the resin cement layer. The shoulder type preparation showed better stress distribution and the composite resin veneers showed unfavorable results compared with the ceramic veneers.

Abstract
PURPOSE The use of porcelain laminate veneers (PLVs) is a minimally invasive technique that is often used in restorative dentistry due to esthetic considerations. The aim of this study was to evaluate PLVs according to the Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI) World Dental Federation clinical criteria. MATERIALS AND METHODS This clinical study included 11 patients (7 female and 4 male) who had been admitted to the Uşak University Faculty of Dentistry between February 2019 and February 2021. Before taking part in the study, patients were informed about alternative treatment procedure options. A total of 30 PLVs were fabricated and cemented, and patients were evaluated according to the FDI criteria (with a follow-up after 2 years). RESULTS Restorations were evaluated by two trained researchers. During the follow-up evaluation, no fractures or cracks were observed in any restoration. Further, 73% (n = 22) of the PLVs had perfect marginal adaptation and only 27% (n = 8) had small marginal fractures that could be removed by polishing. Moreover, 57% (n = 17) of the PLVs were evaluated as a good color match (no difference in shade and/or translucency), whereas 33% (n = 13) had only minor deviations. In periodontal examinations, 23% (n = 7) of the PLVs had no plaque, inflammation, or pockets, whereas 77% (n = 23) had minor plaque inflammation and no pocket development. CONCLUSIONS As there were no fractures, fails, or need for removal of the restorations after 2 years, PLVs showed clinically satisfactory performance. The performance of PLVs can be considered highly favorable due to the minimally invasive and periodontally-compatible nature, with a good color match when carefully planned.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the survival and complication rates of resin composite laminate veneers. METHODS Randomized controlled trials and cohort studies with a minimum 2-year follow-up assessing survival and complication rates of resin composite laminate veneers on permanent dentition from 1998 to May 2022. Literature searches were conducted in MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials electronic databases. References cited in the related reviews and included full-text articles were also hand-searched to further identify potentially relevant studies. RESULTS A total of 827 articles were identified. Twenty-two studies were considered for full-text review after the title and abstract screening stage. After exclusion, 7 studies (3 randomized controlled trials and 4 cohort studies) were included in the systematic review. Three published scales were adopted for the quality and risk of bias assessment. At the survival rate threshold, the overall heterogeneity (I2) for randomized controlled trials was 50.5% (P = .108). The overall pooled survival rate of the randomized controlled trials was 88% (95% CI: 81%-94%), with the mean follow-up time ranging from 24 to 97 months. Surface roughness, color mismatch, and marginal discoloration were the most reported complications. CONCLUSION Resin composite laminate veneers demonstrated moderately high survival rates for the entire sample and the direct laminate veneer group demonstrated higher survival rates than the indirect approach. Most of the complications were regarded as clinically acceptable with or without reintervention.

Abstract
The clinical success of porcelain laminate veneers (PLVs) depends on many clinical and technical factors, from planning to execution, among which adhesive cementation is of significant importance. This procedure carries many risk factors if not optimally executed. The objective of this study was to document the clinical parameters affecting successful cementation procedures with a focus on the adhesive strength, integrity, and esthetics of the PLVs. A literature search was conducted through MEDLINE, complemented by a hand search using predefined keywords. Articles published in English between 1995 and 2023 were selected. According to this review, the success and longevity of PLVs rely in great part on the implementation of a precise cementation technique, starting from field isolation, adequate materials selection for adhesion, proper manipulation of the materials, the seating of the veneers, polymerization, and elimination of the excess cement. Several clinical steps performed before cementation, including treatment planning, preparation, impression, and adequate choice of the restorative material, could affect the quality of cementation. Scientific evidence suggests careful implementation of this process to achieve predictable outcomes with PLVs. The short- and long-term clinical success of adhesively luted PLVs is tributary to a deep understanding of the materials used and the implementation of clinical protocols. It is also contingent upon all the previous steps from case selection, treatment planning, and execution until and after the cementation.

Abstract
(1) Background: Aesthetic dentistry has become one of the most dynamic fields in modern dental medicine. Ceramic veneers represent the most appropriate prosthetic restorations for smile enhancement, due to their minimal invasiveness and highly natural appearance. For long-term clinical success, accurate design of both tooth preparation and ceramic veneers is of paramount importance. The aims of this in vitro study were to assess the stress in anterior teeth restored with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) ceramic veneers and compare the resistance to detachment and the fracture of ceramic veneers prepared using two different designs. (2) Methods: Sixteen lithium disilicate ceramic veneers were designed and milled using the CAD-CAM technology and divided into two groups according to the preparations (n = 8): Group 1, conventional (CO), with linear marginal contour and Group 2, crenelated (CR), the latter with our novel (patented) sinusoidal marginal design. All samples were bonded to anterior natural teeth. The mechanical resistance to detachment and fracture was investigated by applying bending forces on the incisal margin of the veneers in order to determine which type of preparation leads to better adhesion. An analytic method was employed, as well, and the results of the two approaches were compared. (3) Results: The mean values of the maximum force recorded at the veneer detachment were 78.82 ± 16.55 N for the CO group and 90.20 ± 29.81 N for the CR group. The relative increase, equal to 14.43%, demonstrated that the novel CR tooth preparation provided higher adhesive joints. In order to determine the stress distribution within the adhesive layer, a finite element analysis (FEA) was performed. The statistical t-test showed that the mean value of the maximum normal stresses is higher for the CR-type preparations. (4) Conclusions: The patented CR veneers represent a practical solution to augment the adhesion and mechanical properties of ceramic veneers. The obtained results demonstrated that CR adhesive joints triggered higher mechanical and adhesive forces, which subsequently led to a higher resistance to detachment and fracture.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to compare types of veneer preparations and their combination with three materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two finite element models were specially prepared used representing window and wrap around preparation for veneers. The "central incisor" tooth geometry was acquired using a laser scanner, and then its surface was adjusted to form a solid model prior to the removal of each preparation separately. Three materials (Lava Ultimate, IPS e-max, and Celtra) were tested in combination with the preparation type. Bone geometry was simplified as two coaxial cylinders in all models. Each model was subjected to two loading conditions of occlusion (edge-to-edge bite and normal bite). STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND RESULTS It was observed that cortical, cancellous bone, and periodontal ligament are insensitive to preparation or materials. Their stresses and deformation were within physiological limits. Significant changes appeared on the central incisor tooth structure, cement layer, and veneer layer stresses and deformations under loading cases. CONCLUSIONS Edge-to-edge bite stresses are severe with window-type preparation, and normal bite did not show any critical values on tooth structure, cement layer, or veneer layer. Veneer layer finish line and its contact with the cement layer and tooth structure play a role in the loading transfer mechanism. Preparation type alters the values of stresses on tooth structure, cement, and veneer layers. With window preparation, extreme stresses appear at finish line, while stresses appear under the loading site with wrap around preparation. Veneer and cement layers withstand the load energy with wrap around preparation and reduce tooth structure stresses. Thus, the lifetime of veneer and cement layers might be longer with window preparation.

Abstract
Although the clinical assessment of enamel thickness is important, hardly any tools exist for accurate measurements. The purpose of this study was to verify the precision of enamel thickness measurements using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Human extracted maxillary central and lateral incisors were used as specimens. Twenty-eight sites were measured in each specimen. The optical path length (OPL) at each measurement site was measured on the OCT images, and enamel thickness (e1) was calculated by dividing OPL by the mean refractive index of enamel, 1.63. The specimens were then sectioned, and a light microscope was used to measure enamel thickness (e2). e1 and e2 were then compared. Measurement errors between e1 and e2 for the central and lateral incisors were 0.04 (0.02; 0.06) mm and 0.04 (0.02; 0.07) mm [median value: (25%, 75% percentile)], respectively. No significant differences between measurement sites were noted for measurement errors between e1 and e2. These results demonstrate that OCT can be used for noninvasive, accurate measurements of enamel thickness.

(1) Background: The shade of resin-based materials and ceramic thickness influence the optical color of laminate restorations. The purpose of this study is to evaluate—in vitro—the effect of resin-based cement shade and ceramic thickness on fluorescence of feldspathic laminate veneers; (2) Methods: 180 samples of feldspathic ceramic A2 shade with two different thicknesses (0.5 and 0.8 mm) were obtained. The samples were cemented to composite resin substrates with one of the following materials in different shades (n = 10): resin cement (Variolink Esthetic in Light, Neutral and Warm shades; or RelyX Veneer in B0.5 /white, Translucent and A3 Opaque/yellow opaque shades); flowable composite resin (G-aenial Flo in A2 and A3 shades) or a pre-heated composite resin (Filtek Supreme XTE, A3 body shade). The fluorescence spectra were obtained by means of a spectrofluorometer. Two-way ANOVA, Tukey, and Student’s t-tests were performed (α = 0.05); (3) Results: Fluorescence values were significantly influenced by the resin-based agent tested (p < 0.001), the thickness of ceramic (p < 0.001), and their interaction (p < 0.001). The lowest fluorescence values were achieved by RelyX Veneer resin cement regardless its shade and the ceramic thickness; (4) Conclusions: both the shade of resin-based agent and the feldspathic ceramic thickness influenced the fluorescence of laminate restorations.

Abstract
Background: To assess the quantity of dentin exposure detected by 3 operators with different clinical expertise for 2 designs of tooth preparation for laminate veneers: window (WI) and butt joint (BJ). Methods: 20 intact maxillary central incisors were collected and then prepared for laminate veneers to a depth of 0.6 mm, with a cervical mini-chamfer finish line of 0.3 mm. Each prepared tooth was analyzed by 3 operators with different expertise: undergraduate student (ST), general practitioner (GP), and prosthodontist (PR), at sight under magnification. Besides descriptive statistics (CI 95%), 2-way ANOVA and Games−Howell tests were used to analyze differences among groups (α = 0.05). Results: The means of percentage and area of detected dentin exposure were WI = 30.48%, 21.57 mm2; BJ = 30.99%, 21.97 mm2; ST/WI = 22.82%, 16.44 mm2; GP/WI = 58.05%, 40.64 mm2; PR/WI = 10.55%, 7.63 mm2; ST/BJ = 28.99%, 20.83 mm2; GP/BJ = 40.56%, 28.32 mm2; PR/BJ = 23.42%, 16.75 mm2. Significant differences were found between ST/WI vs. GP/WI (p = 0.005) and GP/WI vs. PR/WI (p < 0.001). Conclusions: There was no difference in detection of exposed dentin among operators with different expertise for BJ preparation, whereas differences were found between the general practitioner and the other 2 operators in WI. Moreover, the quantity of exposed dentin was not related to different tooth preparation designs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Ceramic veneers restorations may undergo damages, such as cracks, fractures, or debonding. Full-field measurements must be carried out in order to visualize and analyze the strain fields. This paper demonstrates that digital holography permits to investigate the mechanical behavior under stress of a natural incisor and a natural incisor reconstructed with CAD/CAM ceramic veneer. METHODS The facial surface of a maxillary central incisor is prepared to receive a monolithic ceramic reconstruction manufactured using a chairside computer-aided design and computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system (Cerec AC® system, Sirona Dental System®, Bensheim, Germany). One incisor is kept intact for comparison. The samples are sectioned longitudinally to obtain a planar observation of the region of interest. A mechanical indentation head and digital holographic set-ups permit a full-field, contact-less and single-shot measurement of the three-dimensional displacement fields at the surface of the tooth sample when subjected to load. Stain fields are then estimated and comparison of the results between two samples can be carried out. RESULTS 3D displacement, fields and strain fields are measured and highlight the behavior of the region of interest in three directions of space for the ceramic veneer and the natural incisor. The strain maps reveal the local behavior, especially the concentration or the sudden change in strain. The transition zones are clearly observed, particularly for the veneered sample. CONCLUSION Digital holography highlights the localization of stress concentration zones in regions of interest and yields comparative analysis between samples with different tooth preparations. SIGNIFICANCE holography permits to visualize and compare the mechanical response of the ceramic veneer and natural tooth. This helps choosing the mechanical properties of the bonding interface.

Abstract
The presented study aimed to assess the survival rate of porcelain laminate veneers (PLV) based on a systematic review of the literature. An electronic search was last updated in February 2021. Eligibility criteria included clinical series of patients rehabilitated with PLVs published in the last 25 years, with a minimum follow-up of 3 years. Survival analysis methods were applied. Twenty-five studies were included, with 6500 PLVs. The 10-year estimated cumulative survival rate (CSR) of PLVs was 95.5%. The 10-year CSR of PLVs when fracture, debonding, occurrence of secondary caries, and need of endodontic treatment were considered as isolated reasons for failure were 96.3%, 99.2%, 99.3%, and 99.0%, respectively. PLVs without incisal coverage had a higher failure rate than PLVs with incisal coverage. Non-feldspathic PLVs performed better than feldspathic PLVs. As a conclusion, the 10-year CSR of PLVs was 95.5%, when fracture, debonding, occurrence of secondary caries, and need of endodontic treatment were considered as reasons for restoration failure. Fracture seems to be most common complication of PLVs, followed by debonding, with both more commonly happening within the first years after PLV cementation. PLVs with incisal coverage and non-feldspathic PLVs presented lower failure rates than PLVs without incisal coverage and feldspathic PLVs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In-vitro evaluation of the influence of preparation design and thickness of ceramic veneers on the interfacial bond using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS Sixty-four central incisors were randomly assigned to four preparation designs differing from no to complete dentine exposure (n = 16 each): non-prep (NP), minimal-invasive (MI, no dentine exposure), semi-invasive (SI, 50% dentine) and invasive (I, 100% dentine). Ceramic veneers (IPS InLine Veneer) of two thicknesses (0.2-0.5 mm (T1) and > 0.5-1.2 mm (T2)) were etched, silanized, and adhesively luted (Optibond FL, Variolink Veneer). After water storage (37 °C, 21d), thermocycling (2000 cycles, 5°-55 °C), and mechanical loading (2 + 1 million cycles, 50 + 100 N) specimens were imaged by spectral-domain OCT (Telesto II, Thorlabs). Adhesive defects at the ceramic-composite and tooth-composite interfaces were quantified on 35 equidistantly distributed OCT B-scans (length, %). Statistical differences were verified with Wilcoxon-/Mann-Whitney-U-test (α = 0.05). RESULTS Adhesive defects appeared in all groups at both interfaces, albeit to differing extents (0.1 - 31.7%). NP and MI veneers showed no significant differences at the interfaces (pi > 0.05). In groups, SI and I, significantly more adhesive defects appeared at the tooth-composite compared to the veneer-composite interface (pi ≤ 0.039). The following preparation designs and veneer thicknesses showed differences (pi ≤ 0.021): Veneer-composite: NP-T1 < I-T1, MI-T1 < I-T1, I-T1 > I-T2; Tooth-composite: NP-T1 < SI-T1, NP-T1 < I-T1, NP-T2 > MI-T2, MI-T1 < SI-T1, MI-T1 < I-T1, SI-T1 < I-T1, MI-T2 < SI-T2, MI-T2 < I-T2. SIGNIFICANCE The interface adhesion of ceramic veneers was influenced by the preparation design and the veneer thickness. A ceramic thickness of at least 0.5 mm and a preparation without exposing dentine is advantageous for the interfacial bond.

Abstract
To investigate and analyze the impact of teeth preparation designs and sintering protocol on marginal fit and fracture resistance of monolithic translucent zirconia laminate veneers. A total of 40 extracted intact human maxillary central incisors were assigned into 4 groups (n=10/each group) to investigate 2 variables: (1) the design of tooth preparation (a 1.5 mm incisal reduction with or without palatal chamfer) and (2) the two different sintering programs used for translucent zirconia restoration (standard or speed sintering procedure). Marginal discrepancy was evaluated using a digital microscope. The specimens were loaded to failure in the compression mode, using a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Marginal adaptation of monolithic translucent zirconia laminates are affected by both tooth preparation design and sintering protocol. However, resistance to fracture of translucent zirconia laminates has affected mainly by sintering procedure regardless the teeth preparation design used.

Abstract
PURPOSE A retrospective evaluation of extended anterior ceramic laminate veneers (EACVs) after a mean observational period of 10 years. METHODS Thirty-one patients (20 females/11 males) underwent restoration with 101 adhesively luted, heat-pressed EACVs (maxilla, n = 65; mandible, n = 36). RESULTS The 10 year survival rate was 91.8% (95% confidence interval [95%-CI]: 0.87;0.97). Eight ceramic fractures, one biological failure, and one change in treatment plan caused the observed failures. Seventy-seven of the 101 restorations remained intervention-free in service (success rate: 78.6% [95%-CI: 0.70;0.88]). Fourteen interventions were needed (nine recementations, two endodontic treatments, two composite fillings, and one fracture polishing). The jaw position (maxilla/mandible, survival P = .578/success P = .056) had no influence on the clinical performance. EACVs covering large areas of exposed dentin (>50%) were associated with a significantly increased risk (hazard ratio 2.98, P = .019) of needing a clinical intervention (success rate: 68.0% [95%-CI: 0.52; 0.84]). However, the degree of dentin exposure had no effect on the survival rate (P = .761). CONCLUSIONS After a mean observational period of 10 years, mandibular and maxillary EACVs exhibited survival and success rates that were comparable. Significantly lower success rates were associated with large areas of exposed dentin (>50%). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Mandibular and maxillary EACV revealed 10-year survival rates comparable to those published for anterior metal-ceramic and glass-ceramic full-coverage crowns. Precaution should be taken not to expose dentin, and when large areas of dentin are exposed, different conditioning/luting strategies should be used.

Abstract
Objectives
Primary aim of this study was to evaluate survival rate of lithium disilicate veneers in upper and lower anterior teeth. Secondary aims were to evaluate changing in proportions of teeth before and after restorations and to assess mean thickness of the veneers.
Materials and Methods
Seventy-nine upper and lower lithium disilicate veneers were made in 13 patients with worn teeth. Mean follow-up was 3 years. To perform anterior definitive rehabilitations, malocclusions and loss of vertical dimension were treated by full mouth rehabilitations to obtain proper occlusal conditions. Veneers were made of lithium disilicate core and fluorapatite-based ceramic stratification. Survival rate was calculated by Kaplan–Meier analysis. Changing in teeth proportion before and after restorations was analyzed by a paired
t
-test. Descriptive statistics of thickness values were also performed.
Results
One case of detachment was observed with a 98.7% survival rate. Teeth’s proportions were preserved although the first upper right incisor and canine changed in dimension.
Conclusions
Lithium disilicate veneers in esthetical rehabilitations of worn teeth proved to be an effective way of treatment in a medium follow-up of 3 years. Proportions seemed to be maintained with a minimum dental removal.

Abstract
Objective: This analysis discusses common problems with systematic reviews (SRs) and presents a novel solution, the structured critical analysis (SCA) that can be incorporated into a SR or used as an alternative literature review design.Methods: A cross-sectional survey of current SRs related to interdisciplinary restorative dentistry was obtained by evaluating 100 current SRs for their self-reported methodological quality and its effect on scientific validity.Results: The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses protocol (PRISMA) was used in 99/100 SRs, but only 8/100 reported a low risk of bias. High statistical heterogeneity precluding meta-analysis was found in 44/100 SRs. Only 94 paragraphs/100 SRs provided critical analysis.Discussion: Significant problems were found with current SRs that can compromise their reliability as the premier level of evidence for clinical science research. The reader must be aware of these deficiencies to correctly interpret the SR and cannot rely on the format alone.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of preparation design on the marginal and internal adaptation of laminate veneers (LVs) fabricated from translucent zirconia. Thirty-three resin teeth were prepared for LVs of three designs: window preparation (WP); incisal shoulder preparation (ISP); and incisal palatal chamfer preparation (IPP). Marginal adaptation was evaluated by measuring the vertical discrepancy between the LV margin and the finish line at 60 points. The internal adaptation was assessed by measuring the internal space width as the distance between the LV and the tooth at cervical, central, and incisal sites after sectioning. At the incisal, mesial, and distal sites, mean marginal discrepancies were significantly lower in the WP group than in the other two groups; the IPP group had the highest marginal discrepancies. At incisal sites, the median internal space was significantly higher in the IPP group than in the WP and ISP groups and higher in the ISP group than in the WP group. At the incisal site, marginal and internal adaptations were better for the non-overlap translucent zirconia LV design (WP) than for the overlap designs (ISP and IPP). The characteristics of the translucent zirconia LVs used in the present study indicate acceptable clinical performance.
