Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of preheating and water storage on color, whiteness, and translucency of one-shaded, group-shaded, and multi-shaded resin-based composites. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 270 samples were fabricated from one-shaded (Omnichroma), group-shaded (Optishade MD), and multi-shaded (Enamel Plus HRI) resin-based composites and divided into six groups: no heating (control) and 1-5 heatings (test) (n = 15). The CIE L*, a*, b*, C*, and h° color coordinates were registered over white, black, and gray backgrounds with a spectrophotometer before and after 24, 72, 144 h water storage. Kruskal-Wallis test was used to evaluate differences in the color coordinates, whiteness index, and translucency parameter (α = 0.05). The Mann-Whitney U test was performed with a Bonferroni correction (p < 0.001) for pairwise comparisons. CIEDE2000 color, whiteness, and translucency differences between groups and subgroups were evaluated using their respective 50%:50% perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. RESULTS Preheating influenced color coordinates, whiteness index, and relative translucency parameters (p < 0.001). Although color differences were below the acceptability threshold for all materials, translucency differences were above the acceptability threshold for Omnichroma. Water storage significantly influenced the whiteness index of Optishade MD (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Preheating had a more considerable effect on the color, whiteness, and translucency of one-shaded resin-based composite, while water storage influenced group-shaded resin-based composite more importantly. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Preheating influences the color, whiteness level, and translucency of the resin-based composites, but the variations remain generally clinically acceptable; however, practitioners should be aware that the modifications in translucency for one-shaded resin-based composites could be more important than for group-shaded and multi-shaded resin-based composites.

Abstract
A total of 20 lithium disilicate glass-ceramics (IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent) and 20 resin nano-ceramic (Voco Grandio Blocks) onlay restorations were performed in 20 patients using a split-mouth design to compare the two-year clinical performance of lithium disilicate and resin nano-ceramic onlay restorations. Both restorations were evaluated at baseline, one-year, and two-year clinical follow-ups based on the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests showed no statistically significant difference between Voco Grandio and IPS e.max ceramic restorations for all evaluated parameters during the different follow-up periods (p > 0.05). Cochrane's and MC-Nemar's tests indicated statistically significant differences regarding color match within the Voco Grandio group. They also indicated statistically significant differences in marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, surface texture, and postoperative hypersensitivity within both ceramic material groups (p < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier curve indicated that the survival rate of both ceramic materials was 90%. After two years of clinical service, IPS e.max CAD and Voco Grandio onlay restorations exhibited similar clinical performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To propose the development and validation of criteria for evaluating the clinical performance of indirect restorations, considering the variables related to the operator, material, and/or patient. MATERIALS AND METHODS The experimental design of this study was divided into three stages. Stage 1: development of the new criteria items by specialists in Prosthodontics. Step 2: creation of the criteria, named UERJ criteria, with the description of the parameters that indicate the quality of the restoration, the possible associated complications, and a detailed description of each classification. As well as the development of a form of variables. Step 3: validation of the UERJ criteria. RESULTS Cohen's Kappa statistic registered for both intra- and inter-examiner agreements a coefficient >0.91 with a p-value <0.0001. The validity of the UERJ criteria was evaluated by tests of sensitivity (0.96) and specificity (0.91) and had a satisfactory accuracy (92.7%), a positive (10.99), and negative (0.05) likelihood ratio and high values predictive variables, with positive (PPV) 0.84 (high specificity) and negative (VPN) 0.98 (high sensitivity), with a confidence interval of 95%. CONCLUSION The UERJ criteria is a valid instrument for evaluating the clinical performance of indirect restorations. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The UERJ criteria, developed exclusively for the analysis of indirect restorations, elucidates the details necessary to identify the causes of failures and complications of these restorations.

Abstract
Microbial adhesion on dental restorative materials may jeopardize the restorative treatment long-term outcome. The goal of this in vitro study was to assess Candida albicans capability to adhere and form a biofilm on the surface of heat-cured dental composites having different formulations but subjected to identical surface treatments and polymerization protocols. Three commercially available composites were evaluated: GrandioSO (GR), Venus Diamond (VD) and Enamel Plus HRi Biofunction (BF). Cylindrical specimens were prepared for quantitative determination of C. albicans S5 planktonic CFU count, sessile cells CFU count and biomass optical density (OD570 nm). Qualitative Concanavalin-A assays (for extracellular polymeric substances of a biofilm matrix) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analyses (for the morphology of sessile colonies) were also performed. Focusing on planktonic CFU count, a slight but not significant reduction was observed with VD as compared to GR. Regarding sessile cells CFU count and biomass OD570 nm, a significant increase was observed for VD compared to GR and BF. Concanavalin-A assays and SEM analyses confirmed the quantitative results. Different formulations of commercially available resin composites may differently interact with C. albicans. The present results showed a relatively more pronounced antiadhesive effect for BF and GR, with a reduction in sessile cells CFU count and biomass quantification.

Abstract
Lithium disilicate (LDS) glass ceramics are among the most common biomaterials in conservative dentistry and prosthodontics, and their wear behavior is of paramount clinical interest. An innovative in vitro model is presented, which employs CAD/CAM technology to simulate the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. The model aims to evaluate the effect of the abutment rigidity on the wear resistance of the LDS glass ceramic. Two experimental groups (LDS restorations supported by dental implants, named LDS-on-Implant, or by hybrid ceramic tooth replicas with artificial periodontal ligament, named LDS-on-Tooth-Replica) and a control group (LDS-Cylinders) were compared. Fifteen samples (n = 15) were fabricated for each group and subjected to testing, with LDS antagonistic cusps opposing them over 120,000 cycles using a dual axis chewing simulator. Wear resistance was analyzed by measuring the vertical wear depth (mm) and the volume loss (mm3) on each LDS sample, as well as the linear antagonist wear (mm) on LDS cusps. Mean values were calculated for LDS-Cylinders (0.186 mm, 0.322 mm3, 0.220 mm, respectively), LDS-on-Implant (0.128 mm, 0.166 mm3, 0.199 mm, respectively), and LDS-on-Tooth-Replica (0.098 mm, 0.107 mm3, 0.172 mm, respectively) and compared using one-way-ANOVA and Tukey's tests. The level of significance was set at 0.05 in all tests. Wear facets were inspected under a scanning electron microscope. Data analysis revealed that abutment rigidity was able to significantly affect the wear pattern of LDS, which seems to be more intense on rigid implant-abutment supports compared to resilient teeth replicas with artificial periodontal ligament.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental materials science is an important core course in undergraduate dental programs which integrates foundational concepts of chemical engineering and materials science into clinical dentistry. The present study aimed to identify relevant dental materials science topics for Malaysian undergraduate dental curricula and to determine their appropriate competency levels in terms of cognitive and psychomotor taxonomies. METHODS Potential dental materials science topics were drafted in alignment with the revised national competency statement. The list of topics was further amended after comparing it with those recommended topics in the literature. Fuzzy Delphi method was applied. Experts were selected based on the different inclusion criteria. They ranked the topics using a five-point Likert scale and recommended the appropriate cognitive and psychomotor levels. Next, fuzzy evaluation was performed. Consensus was deemed for a topic to be included if (a) the average expert agreement was ≥ 75%, (b) the d-construct threshold value for each topic was ≤ 0.2 and (c) the average fuzzy number was ≥ 0.5. RESULTS Sixty-two experts participated in the study. They accepted 33 out of 36 potential dental materials science topics. The average Likert score and fuzzy number ranged from 3.63 to 4.92 and 0.526 to 0.784, respectively. Furthermore, "Endodontic materials" was ranked as the most significant topic. Meanwhile, many topics required dental students to demonstrate a cognitive level of "Apply" and a psychomotor level of "Guided response". Based on mean scores, "Impression materials" was rated as the most cognitively demanding topic, whilst "Temporary restorative materials" was the most demanding topic for psychomotor taxonomy. CONCLUSION The present study has identified relevant dental materials science topics and their appropriate cognitive and psychomotor levels using the Fuzzy Delphi approach. The findings of the present study form the basis for future studies to develop measurable learning outcomes, design corresponding innovative pedagogy and propose assessment criteria for each topic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of different times and concentrations of hydrofluoric acid etching on the surface of indirect restorative materials obtained from blocks used in CAD-CAM technology. METHODS Specimens (4 mm × 4 mm × 0.8 mm) were obtained for each indirect restorative material: zirconia-reinforced lithium monosilicate ceramic (Celtra Duo), nanoceramic resin (Lava Ultimate), and polymer-infiltrated ceramic network material (Vita Enamic). The materials were submitted to etching with 5% or 10% hydrofluoric acid for 20, 40, 60, or 90 s. A control group for each material was evaluated without any surface treatment, totaling nine experimental groups for each material (n = 10). The specimens were evaluated for surface roughness (Ra and Rz), confocal optical microscopy, the contact angle (θ), surface free energy (γs), total free interaction energy (∆G) using a goniometer, and microshear bond strength to resin cement. Specimen images were obtained using scanning electron microscopy, confocal optical microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Data on the surface roughness, the contact angle, surface free energy, total free interaction energy, and bond strength were subjected to two-way ANOVA and Tukey´s test (α=0.05). RESULTS In general, Celtra Duo showed better results after etching with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 40 or 60 s. Lava Ultimate showed better performance after etching with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 20 or 40 s, whereas Vita Enamic showed better results after etching with 5% hydrofluoric acid for 90 s. CONCLUSION Each material showed different characteristics after etching with hydrofluoric acid. Knowledge of the proper protocol for each material is essential to ensure improvements in the adhesion process and durability of indirect restorations. In general, Celtra Duo presented mechanical properties superior to those of Lava Ultimate and Vita Enamic. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Specific etching protocols must be recommended for each indirect material because longer exposure to hydrofluoric acid can jeopardize the surface, thus affecting the mechanical and bond strength properties.

Abstract
This study investigated the two-body wear resistance of a first generation 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP), a second generation 3Y-TZP, a third generation 4 mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (4Y-PSZ), a 5 mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ), and a type III gold alloy (Aurocast 8), performed using opposing antagonistic cusps made out of the same material. Eight cylindrical specimens were prepared for each material (n = 8) for a total of forty specimens (N = 40). Conical cusps were fabricated for each material. Each cylinder−cusp pair was arranged inside a two-axis chewing simulator over up to 360,000 loading cycles. The wear resistance was analyzed by measuring the vertical substance loss (mm) and the volume loss (mm3). The antagonist wear (mm) was recorded before and after the wear test to evaluate the linear difference. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA); multiple comparisons were performed according to Tukey’s method. No statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) among the first generation 3Y-TZP, second generation 3Y-TZP, and 4Y-PSZ wear were found. 5Y-PSZ showed statistically significant higher wear compared to other the zirconias. Aurocast 8 displayed the highest values in terms of vertical wear, antagonist cusp wear, and volumetric loss. Although still not statistically comparable, the wear behavior of the latest 5Y-PSZ was the closest to the widely recognized gold standard represented by the type III gold alloy.

Abstract
Antibacterial and antibiofilm properties of restorative dental materials may improve restorative treatment outcomes. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate Streptococcus mutans capability to adhere and form biofilm on the surface of three commercially available composite resins (CRs) with different chemical compositions: GrandioSO (VOCO), Venus Diamond (VD), and Clearfil Majesty (ES-2). Disk-shaped specimens were manufactured by light-curing the CRs through two glass slides to maintain a perfectly standardized surface topography. Specimens were subjected to Planktonic OD600nm, Planktonic CFU count, Planktonic MTT, Planktonic live/dead, Adherent Bacteria CFU count, Biomass Quantification OD570nm, Adherent Bacteria MTT, Concanavalin A, and Scanning Electron Microscope analysis. In presence of VOCO, VD, and ES2, both Planktonic CFU count and Planktonic OD600nm were significantly reduced compared to that of control. The amount of Adherent CFUs, biofilm Biomass, metabolic activity, and extracellular polymeric substances were significantly reduced in VOCO, compared to those of ES2 and VD. Results demonstrated that in presence of the same surface properties, chemical composition might significantly influence the in vitro bacterial adhesion/proliferation on resin composites. Additional studies seem necessary to confirm the present results.

Abstract
A safe method to increase the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) in patients with mild temporomandibular symptoms (such as tenderness upon palpation) is described. After a temporomandibular joint magnetic resonance (MR), an OVD increase was sought, pursuing pure rotational movement without condyle displacement. Prior to definitive rehabilitation, an additional MR confirmed steady and healthy condyle-disc-fossa relationships.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present narrative review was focused on the optical properties, surface treatment, adhesion, and clinical indications of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramics (ZLS) for Computer-aided design / Computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies. DATA/SOURCES A literature search was performed by 3 calibrated independent researchers on PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar, Dynamed, and Open Grey. The criteria for inclusion were: 1) papers addressing at least one of the following variables about ZLS: optical properties, surface treatment, adhesion, and clinical indications; 2) in vitro, in silico, or in vivo studies; 3) case reports; 4) systematic reviews. The exclusion criteria were: 1) animal studies; 2) non-dental studies; 3) studies only focusing on ZLS used in the heat-pressed process. STUDY SELECTION 98 records among in vitro studies and case reports were included. CONCLUSIONS Despite the promising microstructure characteristics of ZLS, increased translucency compared to lithium disilicate ceramics (LS2) was not proven, but acceptable color changes and stability were reported. Mechanical polishing was the most effective method to reduce surface roughness. Moreover, machinability and handling of ZLS resulted harder than LS2. Conventional acid etching procedures seemed effective in conditioning ZLS surface, but no protocol has been established yet. Besides, silane-coupling and dual-curing resin cements were recommended. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE ZLSs can be used for anterior and posterior fixed single-unit CAD/CAM restorations onto both natural teeth and implants, but do not seem to represent a viable treatment option for endocrowns onto posterior teeth or fixed dental prostheses.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the one-year clinical performance of lithium disilicate (LD) and zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) class II inlay restorations. Thirty healthy individuals who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled for the study. The patients were randomly divided into two study groups (n = 15): LD (IPS e.max press) and ZrO2 (Dentcare Zirconia). In the ZrO2 group, the internal surfaces of the inlays were sandblasted and silanized with Monobond N (Ivoclar, Leichsteistein, Germany). In the LD group, the internal surfaces of the inlays were etched with 5% hydrofluoric acid. The ceramic inlays were cemented with self-cure resin cement (Multilink N). Clinical examinations were performed using modified United State Public Health Codes and Criteria (USPHS) after 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 months and 1 year. The one-year survival rate was evaluated. In total, one failure was observed in the ZrO2 group. The survival probability after 1 year for the ZrO2 inlays was 93%, and for the LD inlays was 100%, which was statistically insignificant. The differences between both groups for most USPHS criteria (except for colour match) were statistically insignificant. Within the imitations of the present study, the lithium disilicate- and zirconia dioxide-based inlays exhibited comparable clinical performances. However, the colour and translucency match was superior for the lithium disilicate restorations.
