Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate differences in point-of-care (POC) variables obtained from arterial and jugular venous blood in dogs undergoing manual basic life support (BLS) and report changes over time. DESIGN Experimental study. SETTING Small animal research facility. ANIMALS Twenty-four purpose-bred research dogs. INTERVENTIONS Dogs were anesthetized, and arterial catheters were placed before euthanasia. One minute after cardiopulmonary arrest, BLS consisting of manual chest compressions and ventilation delivered via endotracheal intubation, face mask, mouth-to-nose, or no ventilation was initiated. Paired arterial and jugular venous blood samples were obtained for POC testing before euthanasia (T0), at 3 minutes (T3), and at 6 minutes (T6) into BLS. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS The association of POC variables with arterial or venous sample type while controlling for type of ventilation and sampling timepoint was determined using a generalized linear mixed model. Variables obtained from arterial and venous blood samples were compared over time using repeated measures ANOVA or Friedman test. Pao2, anion gap, potassium, chloride, glucose concentration, and PCV were significantly higher in arterial blood samples compared with venous samples (P < 0.03). By T6, arterial glucose concentration, arterial and venous base excess, venous pH, and plasma lactate, potassium, creatinine, bicarbonate, and sodium concentrations were significantly increased, and arterial and venous Po2, ionized calcium concentration, PCV, and total plasma protein concentration were significantly decreased from T0 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Although statistically significant, arteriovenous differences and changes in POC blood variables during BLS were small and not clinically relevant over time. Given the challenges of arterial blood sampling, it may be reasonable to pursue venous blood sampling during CPR. Further studies in dogs undergoing BLS and advanced life support are needed to better understand the potential clinical role of POC testing during CPR.

Abstract
Perioperative hyponatremia, due to non-osmotic release of the antidiuretic hormone arginine vasopressin, is a serious electrolyte disorder observed in connection with many types of surgery. Since blood loss during surgery contributes to the pathogenesis of hyponatremia, we explored the effect of bleeding on plasma sodium using a controlled hypotensive hemorrhage pig model. After 30-min baseline period, hemorrhage was induced by aspiration of blood during 30 min at mean arterial pressure <50 mmHg. Thereafter, the animals were resuscitated with retransfused blood and a near-isotonic balanced crystalloid solution and monitored for 180 min. Electrolyte and water balances, cardiovascular response, renal hemodynamics, and markers of volume regulation and osmoregulation were investigated. All pigs (n = 10) developed hyponatremia. All animals retained hypotonic fluid, and none could excrete net-free water. Urinary excretion of aquaporin 2, a surrogate marker of collecting duct responsiveness to antidiuretic hormone, was significantly reduced at the end of the study, whereas lysine vasopressin, i.e., the pig antidiuretic hormone remained high. In this animal model, hyponatremia developed due to net positive fluid balance and generation of electrolyte-free water by the kidneys. A decreased urinary aquaporin 2 excretion may indicate an escape from antidiuresis.

Abstract
Isoflurane is a commonly used inhalation anesthetic in species undergoing veterinary care that induces hypotension, impacting organ perfusion, making it imperative to minimize its occurrence or identify effective strategies for treating it. This study evaluated and compared the hemodynamic effects of DOB, NEP, VAS, and HES in twelve isoflurane-anesthetized Beagle dogs. The order of the first three treatments was randomized. HES was administered last. Data were collected before treatments (baseline) and after 10 min of a sustained MAP of <45 mmHg induced by a high end-tidal isoflurane concentration (T0). Once treatment was initiated and the target MAP was achieved (65 to 80 mmHg) or the maximum dose reached, data were collected after 15 min of stabilization (T1) and 15 min after (T2). A 15 min washout period with a MAP of ≥65 mmHg was allowed between treatments. The intravenous dosage regimens started and were increased by 50% every five minutes until the target MAP or maximum dose was reached. The dosages were as follows: DOB, 5-15 μg/kg/min; NEP, 0.1-2 μg/kg/min; VAS, 0.5-5 mU/kg/min; and HET, 6% 1-20 mL/kg/min. DOB improved CO, DO2, and VO2, but reduced SVR. VAS elevated SVR, but decreased CO, DO2, and VO2. HES minimally changed BP and mildly augmented CO, DO2, and VO2. These treatments failed to reach the target MAP. NEP increased the arterial BP, CO, MPAP, and PAWP, but reduced HR. Norepinephrine infusion at 0.44 ± 0.19 μg/kg/min was the most efficient therapy for correcting isoflurane-induced hypotension.

Abstract
Background Intraoperative fluids are still poorly studied in veterinary medicine. In humans the dosage is associated with significant differences in postoperative outcomes. Objectives The aim of this study is to verify the influence of three different fluid therapy rates in dogs undergoing video-assisted ovariohysterectomy. Methods Twenty-four female dogs were distributed into three groups: G5, G10, and G20. Each group was given 5, 10, and 20 mL·kg−1·h−1 of Lactate Ringer, respectively. This study evaluated the following parameters: central venous pressure, arterial blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, acid-base balance, and serum lactate levels. Additionally, this study evaluated the following urinary variables: urea, creatinine, protein to creatinine ratio, urine output, and urine specific gravity. The dogs were evaluated up to 26 h after the procedure. Results All animals presented respiratory acidosis during the intraoperative period. The G5 group evidenced intraoperative oliguria (0.80 ± 0.38 mL·kg−1·h−1), differing from the G20 group (2.17 ± 0.52 mL·kg−1·h−1) (p = 0.001). Serum lactate was different between groups during extubation (p = 0.036), with higher values being recorded in the G5 group (2.19 ± 1.65 mmol/L). Animals from the G20 group presented more severe hypothermia at the end of the procedure (35.93 ± 0.61°C) (p = 0.032). Only the members of the G20 group presented mean potassium values below the reference for the species. Anion gap values were lower in the G20 group when compared to the G5 and G10 groups (p = 0.017). Conclusions The use of lactated Ringer's solution at the rate of 10 mL·kg−1·h−1 seems to be beneficial in the elective laparoscopic procedures over the 5 or 20 mL·kg−1·h−1 rates of infusion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To retrospectively compare the efficacy and duration of effect of three commonly used locoregional blocks in dogs undergoing pelvic limb orthopaedic surgery. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective clinical study. ANIMALS A total of 236 dogs that underwent pelvic limb surgery and were administered a locoregional technique. METHODS A total of 236 hospital records were reviewed and 230 included in statistical analysis. Dogs were grouped as following: electrostimulation-guided pre-iliac femoral and sciatic nerve block (group PFS, n = 70); ultrasound-guided saphenous and sciatic nerve block (group SS, n = 76); or lumbosacral epidural (group EPI, n = 84). In group EPI, bupivacaine 0.5% or ropivacaine 0.75% was used with morphine. Dogs were pain scored (short form of the Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale) hourly following recovery from anaesthesia. Analysed data included: time to first postoperative dose of methadone, pain score at that time, intraoperative rescue analgesia, intraoperative hypotension and ability to walk and urinate overnight. Separate analyses were performed including all pelvic limb surgeries and including only elective stifle surgeries. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were performed. A p value < 0.05 was considered significant. The median (range) is reported. RESULTS For all pelvic limb surgeries, the time to first postoperative methadone was 530 (110-1337), 440 (140-1030) and 466 (135-1094) minutes in groups EPI, PFS and SS, respectively, and was not significantly different. Postoperatively, 10/84, 15/70 and 12/76 dogs in groups EPI, PFS and SS, respectively, did not require methadone (nonsignificant). Significantly fewer dogs in group EPI (18%) required intraoperative rescue analgesia compared with group SS (38%), but not compared with PFS (30%). Significantly more dogs in group EPI had hypotension intraoperatively (30%) and urinary retention postoperatively (62%). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Intraoperative analgesia may be superior with EPI than SS for some surgeries of the pelvic limb, but not for stifle surgeries. All three techniques provided similar requirement for postoperative analgesia, but EPI caused higher incidence of intraoperative hypotension and postopertive urinary retention.

Abstract
Hypotension is a common occurrence, especially in anesthetized patients and in critical patients suffering from hypovolemia due to shock and sepsis. Hypotension can also occur in normovolemic animals, anesthetized or conscious, under conditions of vasodilation or decreased cardiac function. The main consequence of hypotension is decreased organ perfusion and tissue injury/dysfunction. In the human literature there is no consensus on what is the threshold value for hypotension, and ranges from < 80 to < 100 mmHg for systolic blood pressure and from < 50 to < 70 mmHg for mean arterial blood pressure have been referenced for intraoperative hypotension. In veterinary medicine, similar values are referenced, despite marked differences in normal arterial blood pressure between species and with respect to humans. Therapeutic intervention involves fluid therapy to normalize volemia and use of sympathomimetics to enhance cardiac function and regulate peripheral vascular resistance. Despite these therapeutic measures, there is a subset of patients that are seemingly refractory and exhibit persistent hypotension. This review covers the physiological aspects that govern arterial blood pressure control and blood flow to tissues/organs, the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in hypotension and refractory hypotension, and therapeutic considerations and expectations that include proper interpretation of cardiovascular parameters, fluid recommendations and therapy rates, use of sympathomimetics and vasopressors, and newer approaches derived from the human literature.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to examine whether associations between disease severity and packed cell volume exist in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data were selected from 289 dogs that had been examined at a research clinic (2004-2017) on multiple occasions (n=1465). American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine stage and echocardiographic measurements were entered in separate multivariable linear mixed effects models with packed cell volume as the dependent variable. Age, breed, sex, weight and blood urea nitrogen concentrations were additionally tested in these analyses to control for patient characteristics. RESULTS Packed cell volume (% whole blood) in stages B1 and B2 (B1: 42.62 ±0.27, P=0.001; B2: 41.77± 0.42, P < 0.001) was lower than stage A (44.57 ±0.53). In stage C, packed cell volume was greater than both preclinical stages (C: 43.84 ±0.46). When the administration of loop diuretics was included in statistical models, packed cell volume was inversely related to normalised left ventricular internal diameters (β: -2.37; 95% confidence intervals: -3.49, -1.25; P < 0.001). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease may develop reductions in packed cell volume as their disease progresses. Although this finding was statistically significant at a population level, it should be noted that the differences described are relatively small. This, along with other causes of variation in packed cell volume, means that changes would be challenging to appreciate within individual patients. Plasma volume depletion following diuretic administration may explain why findings differed in stage C.

Abstract
We evaluated changes in cardiovascular and renal functions as well as arginine vasopressin (AVP) secretion, with remifentanil and dexmedetomidine administration alone or in combination in sevoflurane-anesthetized dogs. Six healthy adult Beagle dogs received one of the following four treatments in a randomized crossover study: saline (C), remifentanil alone at successively increasing doses (R; 0.15, 0.60, and 2.40 µg/kg/min), dexmedetomidine alone (D; 0.5 µg/kg intravenously for initial 10 min followed by a constant rate infusion at 0.5 µg/kg/hr), and a combination of remifentanil and dexmedetomidine at the above-mentioned doses (RD). Sevoflurane doses were adjusted to 1.5 times of minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) equivalent according to MAC-sparing effects with remifentanil and dexmedetomidine as previously reported. Cardiovascular measurements, renal function data, and plasma AVP concentrations were determined before and every 60 min until 180 min after drug administration as per each treatment. In the R, D and RD, heart rate significantly decreased and mean arterial pressure significantly increased from baseline or with C. Cardiac index significantly decreased and systemic vascular resistance index increased with D and RD. Oxygen extraction ratio, renal blood flow, and glomerular filtration rate were not affected. The plasma AVP concentrations significantly decreased in D and RD, but increased in R. Only in D, the natriuresis was elicited. The combination of remifentanil and dexmedetomidine in sevoflurane-anesthetized dogs was acceptable in terms of the hemodynamics, oxygenation, and renal function. Remifentanil may interfere with dexmedetomidine-induced diuresis and inhibition of AVP secretion.

Abstract
The mouse has become the most common mammalian animal model used in biomedical research. However, laboratory techniques used previously in rats and other larger animals to sample blood had to be adapted in mice due to their lower mouse plasma volume. Sampling is further confounded by the variability in plasma hormone and metabolite concentrations that can occur from the stress or the anesthesia that accompanies the collection. In this article, we describe in detail a protocol we developed for blood sampling in conscious, unrestrained mice. Our protocol implements the use of chronic indwelling catheters in the right external jugular vein, allowing the mice to recover fully in their home cages, untethered until the time of blood sampling. This protocol employs catheters that remain patent for days and does not require the purchase of expensive equipment. We validated this protocol by measuring the time course of plasma norepinephrine (NE) concentration during and after the relief of acute immobilization stress in wild type (WT) and pendrin knockout (KO) mice and compared these results with our previously published values. We found that following relief from immobilization stress, it takes longer for plasma NE concentration to return to basal levels in the pendrin KO than in the wild type mice. These results highlight the potential utility of this protocol and the potential role of pendrin in the neuroendocrine response to acute stress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of a 6% hydroxyethyl starch (130/0.42) in either a buffered, electrolyte-balanced (HES-BAL) or saline (HES-SAL) carrier solution on electrolyte concentrations and acid-base parameters in healthy anaesthetized dogs. STUDY DESIGN Prospective randomised clinical study. ANIMALS A group of 40 client-owned dogs undergoing general anaesthesia for elective surgical procedures or diagnostic imaging. METHODS During anaesthesia, dogs were intravenously administered 15 mL kg-1 of either HES-SAL (n = 20) or HES-BAL (n = 20) over 30-40 minutes. Jugular blood samples were analysed before (T0) and 5 minutes (T5), 1 hour (T60) and 3 hours (T180) after fluid administration. Sodium, potassium, chloride, ionised calcium, phosphate, albumin, pH, venous pCO2, base excess (BE), bicarbonate and anion gap were determined and strong ion difference (SID) and total quantity of weak nonvolatile acids were calculated for each time point. RESULTS Chloride was significantly increased at T5, T60 and T180 compared with T0 after HES-SAL, and was significantly greater after HES-SAL than after HES-BAL at T5 (p = 0.042). Ionised calcium was significantly decreased at T5 compared with T0 after HES-SAL, and was significantly lower after HES-SAL than after HES-BAL at T5 (p < 0.001). Bicarbonate was significantly lower after HES-SAL than after HES-BAL at T5 (p = 0.004) and T60 (p = 0.032). BE was significantly lower after HES-SAL than after HES-BAL at T5 (p < 0.001) and T60 (p = 0.007). SID was significantly decreased after HES-SAL at T5 and T60 compared with T0, and was significantly lower after HES-SAL than after HES-BAL at T5 (p = 0.027). Mean electrolyte and acid-base parameters remained within or marginally outside of reference intervals. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Changes in both groups were minor and short-lived with either fluid in healthy individuals, but might become clinically relevant with higher fluid doses or in critically ill dogs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess effects of major abdominal surgery on serum cortisol and aldosterone and plasma canine ACTH (cACTH) concentrations. ANIMALS 39 healthy dogs undergoing laparotomy during veterinary student surgical laboratories. PROCEDURES Blood samples were obtained before and at completion of surgery. Serum cortisol and aldosterone and plasma cACTH concentrations were measured by use of validated radioimmunoassays. Changes in concentrations (postoperative concentration minus preoperative concentration) were calculated. Data were analyzed by use of the Wilcoxon signed rank test, Pearson correlation analysis, and Mann-Whitney rank sum test. RESULTS Cortisol, aldosterone, and cACTH concentrations increased significantly from before to after surgery. Although cortisol and aldosterone concentrations increased in almost all dogs, cACTH concentrations decreased in 6 of 32 (19%) dogs. All dogs had preoperative cortisol concentrations within the reference range, but 24 of 39 (62%) dogs had postoperative concentrations above the reference range. A correlation between the change in cACTH concentration and the change in cortisol concentration was not detected. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Laparotomy caused a significant increase in serum cortisol and aldosterone concentrations. In most dogs, but not all dogs, plasma cACTH concentrations increased. Lack of correlation between the change in cACTH concentration and the change in cortisol concentration suggested that increased postoperative cortisol concentrations may have been attributable to ACTH-independent mechanisms, an early ACTH increase that caused a sustained cortisol release, or decreased cortisol clearance. Further studies are indicated to evaluate the effects of various anesthetic protocols and minimally invasive surgical techniques on the stress response.

Abstract
RESUMO Apesar dos inúmeros benefícios da fluidoterapia transcirúrgica, sobrecarga de volume pode trazer efeitos deletérios, como a alteração de parâmetros hematimétricos. Dessa maneira, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar duas diferentes taxas de infusão de solução cristaloide no período transanestésico e seus efeitos até 24 horas pós-operatório. Foram utilizados dois grupos de seis animais cada, um deles recebeu solução de cloreto de sódio 0,9% a 10mL/kg/h (G10) e o outro a 5mL/kg/h (G5). Os valores de hematócrito foram avaliados no período de 24 horas em 10 diferentes momentos. Os resultados não apontaram diferenças significativas entre os grupos, porém foi observada redução significativa do hematócrito após indução anestésica. Foi ainda observada redução de hematócrito após o término da cirurgia em ambos os grupos, e o retorno aos valores basais de hematócrito ocorreu de forma significativa 12 horas após o procedimento cirúrgico em G10, e após oito horas em G5, mostrando uma tendência à hemodiluição mais persistente em G10.

Abstract
The goal of maintenance fluid therapy in small animals is to replace normal ongoing losses of water and salts when oral intake is withheld. Hospitalized dogs and cats may have multiple stimuli for antidiuretic hormone release that disrupt normal osmoregulation and predispose to water retention. Severe illness promotes retention of both sodium and water as edema. Commercially available fluids have electrolyte concentrations that are very different from dietary maintenance requirements, and potential consequences include development of hypoosmolality, edema, or both when excesses of water or sodium are administered. Suggestions for tailoring fluid administration toward specific goals are provided.

Abstract
Monitoring critically ill patients can be a daunting task even for experienced clinicians. Goal-directed therapy is a technique involving intensive monitoring and aggressive management of hemodynamics in patients with high risk of morbidity and mortality. The aim of goal-directed therapy is to ensure adequate tissue oxygenation and survival. This article reviews commonly used diagnostics in critical care medicine and what the information gathered signifies and discusses clinical decision making on the basis of diagnostic test results. One example is early goal-directed therapy for severe sepsis and septic shock. The components and application of goals in early goal-directed therapy are discussed.

Abstract
A 3-year-old, spayed female, domestic shorthaired cat was presented for evaluation of liver disease. Following anesthesia, laparoscopy, and medical therapy, the cat developed severe hyponatremia that was unresponsive to fluid therapy. Further evaluation of serum and urine osmolality determined that the cat fulfilled the criteria for syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion. Treatment with fluid restriction resulted in resolution of the hyponatremia and clinical signs associated with the electrolyte imbalance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether intensive care medicine therapies and testing influence hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal test results. It is routine in intensive care medicine to measure hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal function, commonly utilizing the adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation test to diagnose absolute or relative adrenal insufficiency. DESIGN Prospective, 96-hr animal study. SETTING Research laboratory. SUBJECTS Twenty-four healthy canines. INTERVENTIONS Animals were randomized into two groups--awake and unrestrained or treated with intensive care medicine therapies, including sedation, intubation, and mechanical ventilation. Animals were further randomized to receive dexamethasone (or placebo) or undergo either a total of four or seven adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation tests over 96 hrs. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Sedation, intubation, and mechanical ventilation transiently increased both basal and postadrenocorticotropic hormone total and free cortisol concentrations >2-fold as compared with baseline for the first 24 hrs (p < or = .05 for both). Performance of seven stimulation tests increased both basal and postadrenocorticotropic hormone total and free cortisol concentrations from baseline by >1.5-fold for the duration of the 96-hr study (p < or = .05). Neither sedation, intubation, and mechanical ventilation nor the performance of more stimulation tests affected delta cortisol measurements (total or free cortisol, p = NS). In contrast, dexamethasone suppressed basal total cortisol concentrations by >2-fold (p < or = .005) at all time points and transiently increased delta total cortisol by approximately 35% during the first 24 hrs of the study (p < or = .05). CONCLUSIONS Total and free cortisol measurements--whether pre- or post- adrenocorticotropic hormone or as a calculated delta--were altered by intensive care therapies or frequent adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation testing with one exception. Delta free cortisol was the only hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal measurement unaffected by sedation, intubation, and mechanical ventilation, completion of more adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation tests, or dexamethasone therapy. These findings support the need to determine normal ranges for hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal testing in subjects receiving intensive care medicine before establishing laboratory criteria for the diagnosis of relative adrenal insufficiency.

Abstract
Normal labor is accompanied by sequential changes in blood concentrations of prostaglandin F2alpha (measured as 15-ketodihydro-PGF2 alpha=PGFM), progesterone, estradiol, oxytocin, vasopressin, and of elevated cortisol levels. The aim of this study was to investigate hormone concentrations in dogs diagnosed with primary uterine inertia before and during treatment by cesarean section. The hypothesis was the dogs would have abnormally low plasma concentrations in one or several of the hormones involved in parturition. The study comprised seven bitches with total primary uterine inertia (dystocia group) treated with cesarean section and six healthy bitches (control group) subjected to planned cesarean section. Blood samples were taken before anesthesia, before surgery started, on delivery of the first puppy and on delivery of the last puppy. The progesterone:PGFM ratio in plasma was higher in the dystocia group than in the control group, but the serum estradiol concentration did not differ between groups. The plasma concentrations of oxytocin and vasopressin increased in both groups when the first puppies were delivered, but both hormones were more elevated in the control group than in the dystocia group on delivery of the last puppies. The plasma cortisol concentration increased to the same level in both groups. In conclusion, the ratio between progesterone and PGFM was higher and the oxytocin and vasopressin concentrations lower in the dystocia dogs than in the control dogs. The findings indicate that these hormones are involved in the pathophysiology of total primary uterine inertia in bitches.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify variables and evaluate methods for assessing chronic pain in dogs. DESIGN Prospective study. ANIMALS 41 dogs with canine hip dysplasia (CHD), and 24 apparently healthy dogs with no history of pain. PROCEDURE 2 veterinarians evaluated the dogs' locomotion and signs of pain. Owners of dogs with CHD and control dogs answered a questionnaire regarding their dogs' demeanor, behavior, and locomotion (descriptive scales) and assessed pain and locomotion (visual analog scales). Plasma concentrations of several stress-related hormones were determined, and 13 radiologic variables were assessed in affected hip joints. RESULTS For many of the questions, answers provided by owners of dogs with CHD differed significantly from those of owners of control dogs. Stress hormone concentrations differed significantly between dogs with CHD and controls, but individual variation was too great for them to be of value in pain assessment. None of the radiologic variables examined correlated well with owner or veterinarian pain scores. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Chronic pain could be assessed in dogs with CHD through completion of the study questionnaire by a person familiar with the pet (eg, owner) after receiving appropriate education in its use. Eleven variables were identified as being potentially useful in assessment of chronic pain in dogs.

Abstract
Mechanical ventilation is an enormous undertaking for a veterinary hospital in general and for any patient in particular. It is a team effort requiring large amounts of space, supplies, labor, and time. It requires committed owners and clinicians who communicate clearly with each other. It also requires a significant financial commitment initially from the hospital to obtain the equipment and expertise and then from the owner to maintain the patient. All members of the patient care team should have a basic understanding of respiratory physiology and ventilator mechanics. Clear goals for therapy and end points should be established. If they cannot be met, the goals should be reassessed in light of changes in patient condition. Weaning may be difficult and long, but once successful, it is most rewarding for the patient, family, clinician, and team.

PROCEDURE Concentration of AVP, indirect MAP, Osm, PCV, and concentration of TS were measured at 5 time points (before administration of acetylpromazine or morphine, after administration of those drugs, after induction of anesthesia, 1 hour after the start of surgery, and 2 hours after the start of surgery). Urine output and end-tidal halothane concentrations were measured 1 and 2 hours after the start of surgery. All dogs were administered lactated Ringer's solution (20 ml/kg of body weight/h, i.v.) during surgery. RESULTS Compared with values for acetylpromazine, preoperative administration of morphine resulted in significantly lower urine output during the surgical period. Groups did not differ significantly for AVP concentration, Osm, MAP, and end-tidal halothane concentration; however, PCV and concentration of TS decreased over time in both groups and were lower in dogs given acetylpromazine. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Preanesthetic administration of morphine resulted in significantly lower urine output, compared with values after administration of acetylpromazine, which cannot be explained by differences in AVP concentration or MAP When urine output is used as a guide for determining rate for i.v. administration of fluids in the perioperative period, the type of preanesthetic agent used must be considered.
