Abstract
Whether and how well people can behave randomly is of interest in many areas of psychological research. The ability to generate randomness is often investigated using random number generation (RNG) tasks, in which participants are asked to generate a sequence of numbers that is as random as possible. However, there is no consensus on how best to quantify the randomness of responses in human-generated sequences. Traditionally, psychologists have used measures of randomness that directly assess specific features of human behavior in RNG tasks, such as the tendency to avoid repetition or to systematically generate numbers that have not been generated in the recent choice history, a behavior known as cycling. Other disciplines have proposed measures of randomness that are based on a more rigorous mathematical foundation and are less restricted to specific features of randomness, such as algorithmic complexity. More recently, variants of these measures have been proposed to assess systematic patterns in short sequences. We report the first large-scale integrative study to compare measures of specific aspects of randomness with entropy-derived measures based on information theory and measures based on algorithmic complexity. We compare the ability of the different measures to discriminate between human-generated sequences and truly random sequences based on atmospheric noise, and provide a systematic analysis of how the usefulness of randomness measures is affected by sequence length. We conclude with recommendations that can guide the selection of appropriate measures of randomness in psychological research.

Abstract
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious mental health issue among women after childbirth, and screening systems that incorporate questionnaires have been utilized to screen for PPD. These questionnaires are sensitive but less specific, and the additional use of objective measures could be helpful. The present study aimed to verify the usefulness of a measure of autonomic function, heart rate variability (HRV), which has been reported to be dysregulated in people with depression. Among 935 women who had experienced childbirth and completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), HRV was measured in EPDS-positive women (n = 45) 1 to 4 weeks after childbirth using a wearable device. The measurement was based on a three-behavioral-state paradigm with a 5 min duration, consisting of rest (Rest), task load (Task), and rest-after-task (After) states, and the low-frequency power (LF), the high-frequency power (HF), and their ratio (LF/HF) were calculated. Among the women included in this study, 12 were diagnosed with PPD and 33 were diagnosed with adjustment disorder (AJD). Women with PPD showed a lack of adequate HRV regulation in response to the task load, accompanying a high LF/HF score in the Rest state. On the other hand, women with AJD exhibited high HF and reduced LF/HF during the After state. A linear discriminant analysis using HRV indices and heart rate (HR) revealed that both the differentiation of PPD and AJD patients from the controls and that of PPD patients from AJD patients were possible. The sensitivity and specificity for PPD vs. AJD were 75.0% and 90.9%, respectively. Using this paradigm, an HRV measurement revealed the characteristic autonomic profiles of PPD and AJD, suggesting that it may serve as a point-of-care sensing tool in PPD screening systems.

Abstract
(1) Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection is often followed by various complications, which can cause disturbances in daily life after recovery from the infectious state, although etiological mechanisms are not fully elucidated. Previous studies have indicated that autonomic dysregulation is an underlying factor, and it is of interest to clarify whether autonomic dysregulation is also present in the asymptomatic subjects after COVID-19 infection (post-COVID-19) for early detection of post-COVID-19 complications. (2) Methods: In the present study, autonomic activity was assessed using heart rate variability (HRV) analysis in the workers who recovered from mild COVID-19 infection (n = 39). They took a leave of absence for an average of 11.9 days and returned to the original work without complications. HRV was measured after an average of 9.3 days from return. High-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) HRV parameters and heart rate (HR) were recorded during a three-behavioral-state paradigm of approximately 5 min length composed of initial rest, task load, and post-task rest periods and were compared with the data of the workers without the history of COVID-19 infection (normal, n = 38). (3) Results: The HRV and HR scores at the initial rest in the post-COVID-19 subjects showed no difference from those in the control. It is found that the post-COVID-19 subjects exhibited an attenuation of LF/HF increment during the task load and an excessive increase of HF together with a decrease of LF, LF/HF and HR during the post-task rest period in comparison with the initial rest scores. (4) Conclusions: These abnormalities are evaluated as asymptomatic autonomic dysregulation in response to task load, are frequently present after COVID-19 infection, and could be related to the generation of complications.

Abstract
Introduction The fast, intuitive and autonomous system 1 along with the slow, analytical and more logical system 2 constitute the dual system processing model of decision making. Whether acting independently or influencing each other both systems would, to an extent, rely on randomness in order to reach a decision. The role of randomness, however, would be more pronounced when arbitrary choices need to be made, typically engaging system 1. The present exploratory study aims to capture the expression of a possible innate randomness mechanism, as proposed by the authors, by trying to isolate system 1 and examine arbitrary decision making in autistic participants with high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Methods Autistic participants withhigh functioning ASD and an age and gender matched comparison group performed the random number generation task. The task was modified to limit the contribution of working memory and allow any innate randomness mechanisms expressed through system 1, to emerge. Results Utilizing a standard analyses approach, the random number sequences produced by autistic individuals and the comparison group did not differ in their randomness characteristics. No significant differences were identified when the sequences were examined using a moving window approach. When machine learning was used, random sequences' features could discriminate the groups with relatively high accuracy. Conclusions Our findings indicate the possibility that individual patterns during random sequence production could be consistent enough between groups to allow for an accurate discrimination between the autistic and the comparison group. In order to draw firm conclusions around innate randomness and further validate our experiment, our findings need to be replicated in a bigger sample.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) have overlapping symptoms, and differentiation is important to administer the proper treatment. The present study aimed to assess the usefulness of heart rate variability (HRV) indices. Frequency-domain HRV indices, including high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) components, their sum (LF+HF), and their ratio (LF/HF), were measured in a three-behavioral-state paradigm composed of initial rest (Rest), task load (Task), and post-task rest (After) periods to examine autonomic regulation. It was found that HF was low at Rest in both disorders, but was lower in MDD than in CFS. LF and LF+HF at Rest were low only in MDD. Attenuated responses of LF, HF, LF+HF, and LF/HF to task load and an excessive increase in HF at After were found in both disorders. The results indicate that an overall HRV reduction at Rest may support a diagnosis of MDD. HF reduction was found in CFS, but with a lesser severity. Response disturbances of HRV to Task were observed in both disorders, and would suggest the presence of CFS when the baseline HRV has not been reduced. Linear discriminant analysis using HRV indices was able to differentiate MDD from CFS, with a sensitivity and specificity of 91.8% and 100%, respectively. HRV indices in MDD and CFS show both common and different profiles, and can be useful for the differential diagnosis.

Abstract
Using a linear discriminant analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) indices, the present study sought to verify the usefulness of autonomic measurement in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients by assessing the feasibility of their return to work after sick leave. When reinstatement was scheduled, patients’ HRV was measured using a wearable electrocardiogram device. The outcome of the reinstatement was evaluated at one month after returning to work. HRV indices including high- and low-frequency components were calculated in three conditions within a session: initial rest, mental task, and rest after task. A linear discriminant function was made using the HRV indices of 30 MDD patients from our previous study to effectively discriminate the successful reinstatement from the unsuccessful reinstatement; this was then tested on 52 patients who participated in the present study. The discriminant function showed that the sensitivity and specificity in discriminating successful from unsuccessful returns were 95.8% and 35.7%, respectively. Sensitivity is high, indicating that normal HRV is required for a successful return, and that the discriminant analysis of HRV indices is useful for return-to-work screening in MDD patients. On the other hand, specificity is low, suggesting that other factors may also affect the outcome of reinstatement.

Abstract
Background Psychological improvement after catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) has been reported, but its mechanism is unclear. Objective This study aimed to clarify the relationship between cardiac autonomic modification and psychological changes after catheter ablation for paroxysmal AF (PAF). Methods Thirty-five consecutive patients (60.5 ± 11.9 years; male, n = 24) with PAF treated by catheter ablation were enrolled. Autonomic activity and reactivity to stress and psychological status were measured before (baseline) and at 1 and 3 months after ablation. We assessed autonomic activity and reactivity to stress by measuring heart rate variability (HRV) at rest (Rest), and during (Task) and after (After) the execution of a task and assessed relationships between HRV parameters and psychological changes using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Results The STAI state and trait scores significantly decreased at 3 months compared with baseline, whereas SDS scores essentially remained unchanged. The high-frequency (HF) response index (Task/Rest) and HF recovery index (After/Rest) were significantly higher than baseline at 3 months (0.40 [0.29–0.90] vs 1.30 [0.64–2.18], P = .007 for HF response index; 1.13 [0.92–2.19] vs 1.87 [1.19–2.97], P = .049 for HF recovery index). Reductions in STAI scores positively correlated with increments in the HF recovery index in the entire cohort as well as in 5 patients with recurrent AF. Conclusions Some augmentation of parasympathetic reactivity to stress correlated with reduced anxiety, implying that cardiac autonomic modification plays roles in psychological improvement after catheter ablation for AF.

Abstract
AIM The present study aimed to examine whether heart rate variability (HRV) indices in depressed patients measured at return to work after sick leave are related to the outcome of reinstatement. METHODS This study included 30 workers who took a leave of absence due to major depressive disorder. HRV was measured twice, once when participants left work and another when they returned to work. One month after returning to work, 19 participants continued their original work (successful return group), while 11 failed to perform their original work (unsuccessful return group). HRV indices including high- and low-frequency components (HF and LF) were calculated in three conditions within a session lasting for about 5 minutes, initial rest (Rest), mental task (Task), and rest after task (After), and were compared between the two participant groups. Psychological states were evaluated using Self-rating Depression Scale and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. RESULTS No significant differences were observed in the HRV indices on leaving work between groups. On returning to work, the "unsuccessful return group" exhibited lower HF Rest score, higher HF Task/Rest ratio, and higher LF/HF Rest score than the "successful return group." Psychological scores improved in both groups. CONCLUSION These results indicate that autonomic dysregulations revealed by HRV measurement at return to work after a leave of absence in MDD patients were related to the outcome of reinstatement and can serve as useful information for the assessment of the risk of unsuccessful return.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present study was to examine whether depression and anxiety disorder manifest different autonomic dysregulations using heart-rate variability (HRV) and heart rate (HR) measurements. METHODS HRV and HR were recorded both at rest and during task execution (random-number generation) in first-onset drug-naïve patients with major depressive disorder (MDD, n = 14) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD, n = 11) as well as in healthy controls (n = 41). The patients showed no comorbidity of depression and anxiety disorder. GAD patients did not exhibit panic or phobic symptoms at the time of measurement. Following power spectrum analysis of HR trend, the high- (HF) and low-frequency (LF) components, the sum (LF + HF), and the LF/HF ratio were compared among the groups. RESULTS In the MDD patients, as previously reported, HF was low and the LF/HF ratio was high during the initial-rest condition, and HF was less reactive to the task. In contrast, GAD patients showed significantly high HF, although autonomic reactivity was not impaired. CONCLUSION The results indicate that baseline autonomic activity and its reactivity to behavioral changes are different between MDD and GAD in the early stage of illness. High parasympathetic tone in GAD may reflect responses of the parasympathetic system to anxiety. MDD is accompanied by an autonomic shift toward sympathetic activation and a reduced reactivity to task.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present study was to assess autonomic activity and reactivity reflecting arousal functions in depression using heart-rate variability (HRV) and heart rate (HR) measurements. METHODS HRV and HR were measured in drug-naïve depressed (n = 22) and normal subjects (n = 47) both at rest and during task execution (random number generation). Rest activity was measured both before and after the task. Following power spectrum analysis of the heart rate trend, the high-frequency component (HF: 0.15-0.4 Hz) and the ratio of the low-frequency component (LF: 0.04-0.15 Hz) to the HF (LF/HF) were used as the parameters corresponding to parasympathetic and sympathetic activities, respectively. RESULTS For the depressed subjects, HF was lower during the initial rest condition, was less inhibitedduring the task condition, and exceeded the initial rest level during the rest condition following the task. LF/HF was higher at rest, increased less during the task, and maintained its higher level during the rest condition after the task. HR was higher during the initial rest period and responded less to the task. CONCLUSION The results indicate alteration not only of baseline activity but also of reactivity to behavioral changes in depression. These altered autonomic measures are possibly related to the disturbed arousal function and can be used as diagnostic measures and in clinical evaluation.

Abstract
In a random number generation task, participants are asked to generate a random sequence of numbers, most typically the digits 1 to 9. Such number sequences are not mathematically random, and both extent and type of bias allow one to characterize the brain's “internal random number generator”. We assume that certain patterns and their variations will frequently occur in humanly generated random number sequences. Thus, we introduce a pattern-based analysis of random number sequences. Twenty healthy subjects randomly generated two sequences of 300 numbers each. Sequences were analysed to identify the patterns of numbers predominantly used by the subjects and to calculate the frequency of a specific pattern and its variations within the number sequence. This pattern analysis is based on the Damerau-Levenshtein distance, which counts the number of edit operations that are needed to convert one string into another. We built a model that predicts not only the next item in a humanly generated random number sequence based on the item′s immediate history, but also the deployment of patterns in another sequence generated by the same subject. When a history of seven items was computed, the mean correct prediction rate rose up to 27% (with an individual maximum of 46%, chance performance of 11%). Furthermore, we assumed that when predicting one subject′s sequence, predictions based on statistical information from the same subject should yield a higher success rate than predictions based on statistical information from a different subject. When provided with two sequences from the same subject and one from a different subject, an algorithm identifies the foreign sequence in up to 88% of the cases. In conclusion, the pattern-based analysis using the Levenshtein-Damarau distance is both able to predict humanly generated random number sequences and to identify person-specific information within a humanly generated random number sequence.

Abstract
Random number generation with a written response mode provides a potentially appealing marker for executive processes. Impaired performance on written random number generation tasks has been reported in chronic schizophrenic patients. However, no study has investigated whether such a deficit occurs in early schizophrenia and whether its profile and severity are similar to those in patients with chronic illness. This study investigated the ability to generate random numbers in patients with early schizophrenia ( n = 44) and a healthy control group ( n = 48). Patients were less able to maintain several production strategies and generated more stereotyped response sequences, whereas their abilities to identify randomness with an even-handed treatment of digits and to monitor the equality of occurrence of single digits appeared to remain intact. These results provide evidence that some aspects of the deficits in random number generation among chronic schizophrenic patients are also present at early psychotic episode, while some other aspects are relatively less affected in the early years.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Memory impairment is being recognized increasingly as an important feature of the neuropsychology of schizophrenia. Dysfunction of working memory, a system for the short-term storage and manipulation of information, may relate to a number of core symptoms of schizophrenia. Many studies have examined working memory function in schizophrenia but a clear understanding of the nature and extent of any deficit has been elusive. METHOD A systematic review and meta-analysis of studies comparing working memory function in subjects with schizophrenia and healthy controls was performed. Following a comprehensive literature search, meta-analyses were conducted on 36 measures of phonological, visuospatial and central executive working memory functioning, encompassing 441 separate results from 187 different studies. RESULTS Statistically significant effect sizes were found for all working memory measures, indicating deficits in schizophrenia groups. Some of these were robust findings in the absence of evidence of significant heterogeneity or publication bias. Meta-regression analyses showed that the working memory deficit was not simply explained by discrepancies in current IQ between schizophrenia and control groups. CONCLUSIONS Large deficits in working memory were demonstrated in schizophrenia groups across all three working memory domains. There were, however, no clear differences across subdomains or between particular working memory tasks. There was substantial heterogeneity across results that could only be partly explained.

Abstract
AIMS Previous studies have shown that heart rate variability (HRV) measurement is useful in investigating the pathophysiology of various psychiatric disorders. The present study further examined its usefulness in evaluating the mental health of normal subjects with respect to anxiety and depressiveness. METHODS Heart rate (HR) and HRV were measured tonometrically at the wrist in 43 normal subjects not only in the resting condition but also during a task (random number generation) to assess the responsiveness. For HRV measurement, high-frequency (HF; 0.15-0.4 Hz) and low-frequency (LF; 0.04-0.15 Hz) components of HRV were obtained using MemCalc, a time series analysis technique that combines a non-linear least square method with maximum entropy method. For psychological evaluation of anxiety and depressiveness, two self-report questionnaires were used: State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). RESULTS No significant relation was observed between HR and HRV indices, and the psychological scores both in the resting and task conditions. By task application, HF decreased, and LF/HF and HR increased, and significant correlation with psychological scores was found in the responsiveness to task measured by the ratio of HRV and HR indices during the task to that at rest (task/rest ratio). A positive relationship was found between task/rest ratio for HF, and STAI and SDS scores. Task/rest ratio of HR was negatively correlated with STAI-state score. CONCLUSION Decreased HRV response to task application is related to anxiety and depressiveness. Decreased autonomic responsiveness could serve as a sign of psychological dysfunction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown that near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has high temporal resolution, requires little restraint, and is suitable for examining the effect of psychological tasks on brain circulation. In the present study, frontal function in schizophrenic patients was analyzed by NIRS during random number generation (RNG), ruler-catching (RC), and sequential finger-to-thumb (SFT) tasks. METHODS Two sets of NIRS probes were attached to the foreheads of 13 schizophrenic patients and 10 control subjects approximately at Fp1-F7 and Fp2-F8. Near-infrared spectroscopy was conducted at a sampling rate of 1 Hz, with the pathlength being determined by time-resolved spectroscopy with differential pathlength factor measurements. The absolute changes in oxygenated (oxy-Hb) and deoxygenated (deoxy-Hb) hemoglobin concentrations in response to each task were measured, and total hemoglobin (total-Hb) concentration was calculated as the sum of the two. RESULTS During RNG task, total- and oxy-Hb concentrations increased, and deoxy-Hb decreased, but the responses were significantly smaller in schizophrenic patients. During RC task, oxy-Hb in schizophrenic patients tended to decrease, in contrast to the mostly increasing response in control subjects. No group difference was observed during SFT task. CONCLUSIONS Task-dependent profile of functional abnormalities was observed in schizophrenic frontal brain metabolism. These results support the usefulness of NIRS data in investigating frontal lobe dysfunction and evaluating psychopathologic condition in schizophrenic patients.

Abstract
The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is widely believed to subserve mental manipulation and monitoring processes ascribed to the central executive (CE) of working memory (WM). We attempted to examine and localize the CE by functional imaging of the frontal cortex during tasks designed to require the CE. Using near-infrared spectroscopy, we studied the spatiotemporal dynamics of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb), an indicator of changes in regional cerebral blood flow, in both sides of lateral PFC during WM intensive tasks. In most participants, increases in oxy-Hb were localized within one subdivison during performance of the n-back task, whereas oxy-Hb increased more diffusely during the random number generation (RNG) task. Activation of the ventrolateral PFC (VLPFC) was prominent in the n-back task; both sustained and transient dynamics were observed. Transient dynamics means that oxy-Hb first increases but then decreases to less than 50% of the peak value or below the baseline level before the end of the task. For the RNG task sustained activity was also observed in the dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC), especially in the right hemisphere. However, details of patterns of activation varied across participants: subdivisions commonly activated during performance of the two tasks were the bilateral VLPFCs, either side of the VLPFC, and either side of the DLPFC in 4, 2, and 4 of the 12 participants, respectively. The remaining 2 of the 12 participants had no regions commonly activated by these tasks. These results suggest that although the PFC is implicated in the CE, there is no stereotyped anatomical PFC substrate for the CE.
