Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive fatigue after childhood acquired brain injury (ABI) is known to negatively impact engagement in typical academic and social activities, yet limited evidence is available to inform speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') clinical practices. The purpose of this research study was to explore stakeholders' perspectives on cognitive fatigue for children with ABI to inform future directions for clinicians and researchers. METHOD Twelve parents of children with traumatic brain injury and 35 SLPs participated in an online survey with 33 and 49 questions, respectively, including participant characteristics and perspectives on cognitive fatigue. RESULTS Parents reported being between "somewhat" and "highly aware" about cognitive fatigue, whereas SLPs reported being between "neither aware or not aware" and "somewhat aware." Parents reported being between "somewhat comfortable" and "very comfortable," whereas SLPs reported being between "neither comfortable or uncomfortable" and "somewhat comfortable" addressing cognitive fatigue in children with ABI. SLPs "somewhat" to "strongly" agreed that cognitive fatigue for children with ABI was within their scope of practice. Parents and SLPs reported accommodations and strategies useful to managing cognitive fatigue in children with brain injury, as well as factors that worsen and lessen cognitive fatigue. CONCLUSIONS While additional foundational and translation research is needed, the perspectives of parents and SLPs begin to address a critical gap in SLPs' assessment and management of cognitive fatigue in children with ABI. Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been documented that social media addiction (SMA) has a detrimental effect on college students' academic engagement. However, the mechanisms underlying this association are not well understood. This study aimed to determine the serial mediation effects of sleep quality and fatigue on the relationship between SMA and academic engagement among college students. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 2661 college students (43.3% males, mean age = 19.97 years). The participants completed the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, the Utrecht Student Work Engagement Scale for Students, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Fatigue Assessment Scale. The serial mediation effects were examined using Model 6 in the Hayes' PROCESS macro for SPSS. RESULTS The results showed that SMA among college students had a direct negative relationship with their academic engagement (Effect = - 0.051, 95% CI: -0.087 to - 0.015). In addition, sleep quality and fatigue mediated the relationship between SMA and academic engagement both independent and serially, with the independent mediation effect of sleep quality being - 0.031 (95% CI: -0.048 to - 0.016), the independent mediation effect of fatigue being - 0.109 (95% CI: -0.133 to - 0.088), and the serial mediation effect of sleep quality and fatigue being - 0.080 (95% CI: -0.095 to - 0.066). The total indirect effect of the three mediation paths was 80.9%. CONCLUSIONS Decreased academic engagement caused by SMA can be aggravated by poor sleep quality and fatigue. Strengthening supervision and intervention in social media use among college students, supplemented by attention to psychosomatic health, including sleep quality and fatigue could promote their engagement in academic work.

Abstract
This study aims to compare caffeine intake and physical activity levels in university students with severe and ineffective fatigue and examine the relationship between them. A total of 647 (F:527; M:120) university students were included in this cross-sectional study. Individuals' socio-demographic information, severity of fatigue (Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS)), amount of caffeine intake and physical activity level (International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF)) were evaluated. It was determined that 56.5% of the university students (age: 21.21 ± 2.57) participating in the study had severe fatigue. Caffeine intake and physical activity level of students with severe fatigue were statistically significantly lower than those with ineffective fatigue (p < 0.05). In addition, there was a weak negative correlation between fatigue and caffeine intake (r = -0.157; p < 0.001) and physical activity level (r = -0.096; p < 0.017). There was a significant positive correlation between caffeine intake and physical activity (r = 0.143; p < 0.001). This study showed that a significant portion of university students have severe fatigue. In addition, individuals with severe fatigue have decreased caffeine intake and lower physical activity levels. To reduce fatigue, caffeine intake in safe doses should be encouraged in accordance with the individual's metabolic and physiological parameters. In addition, physical activity counseling should be given to encourage physical activity.

Abstract
Objective The present study explores the underlying factors of cognitive abilities in relation to the expression of adiponectin and nitric oxide, fatigue, and other cofounder variables such as physical activity, diabetes, and adiposity status in healthy home-resident mature and older adults. Background Fatigue has been shown to be correlated with many metabolic and psychiatric conditions, such as cognitive, neurological, musculoskeletal, and hormonal disorders, as well as physical and unhealthy lifestyles. Methods A total of 85 home residents aged 50-85 years participated in this case-control study. Mental, fatigue, and pain status were assessed by the cognitive assessment (LOTCA), fatigue questionnaire (CIS20r), and pain score (0-10). VO2 max and the prevalidated global physical activity questionnaire were used to estimate physical status. The levels of adiponectin, nitric oxide (NO), and variables related to diabetes, such as blood sugar and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c %), were assessed using ELISA and spectrophotometric immunoassays. Results The participants were classified according to the CIS-fatigue score into two groups: the healthy group (n = 40) and the fatigue group (n = 45). In fatigued subjects, LOTCA scores as a measure of cognitive performance significantly decreased (65.97 ± 7.17; P = 0.01) as compared with healthy subjects (LOTCA scores, 94.2 ± 7.5). The results of cognitive performance domains (LOTCA seven-subset scores) showed a significant decrease in the scores of orientation, visual perception, spatial perception, motor praxis, vasomotor organization, thinking operations, attention, and concentration in older subjects with fatigue compared with healthy subjects. In addition, pain scores significantly increased, and the expression of both nitric oxide (NO) and adiponectin significantly reduced in older adults with fatigue as compared with healthy controls. The decline in cognitive abilities among older adults with fatigue is significantly associated with the CIS-fatigue score, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, pain status, diabetes, and reduction in the levels of nitric oxide (NO), and adiponectin. Moreover, in fatigued cases, the expression of both NO and adiponectin was significantly correlated with CIS-fatigue score, physical activity, obesity, and diabetes, which indicates its availability as diagnostic markers for cognition in mature and older adults with fatigue. Conclusion In the present study, the data concluded that cognitive abilities were significantly associated with the lower expression of adiponectin and NO as endothelial vascular markers in association with fatigue among home-resident older adults. In addition, the reduction in cognition was significantly affected by other parameters, such as diabetes, obesity, and unhealthy sedentary life activities. Moreover, the results might recommend the use of cellular adiponectin and NO as diagnostic indicators of cognitive abilities in fatigued mature and older adults. However, more studies on larger sample sizes are required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) experience similar levels fatigue as children with bilateral hearing loss (BHL) or normal-hearing (NH). DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Two tertiary care otolaryngology practices. PARTICIPANTS Children, 5 to 18 years old, with UHL or BHL and their parents. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES PedsQL Multidimensional Fatigue Scale (MFS) survey. RESULTS Overall response rate was 90/384 (23%). Mean age of child participants was 10.7 years old (standard deviations [SD] 3.1); 38 (42%) were men and 52 (58%) were women. Sixty-nine (77%) children had UHL, 21 (23%) had BHL. Children with BHL (mean 65, SD 21) and UHL (mean 75, SD 17) reported greater levels of fatigue than children with NH (BHL difference -15, 95% confidence interval [CI] -25 to -5; UHL difference -6, 95% CI -13-1.2). Parent-proxy reports for children with BHL (mean 67, SD 20) and UHL (mean 76, SD 20) reported more fatigue than NH (BHL difference -22, 95% CI -33 to -12; UHL difference -14; 95% CI -20 to -8). Sub-section scores for general, sleep, and cognitive fatigue were higher for children with BHL and UHL than NH. CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE Children with UHL and BHL reported significantly more fatigue than children with NH, and children with BHL reported more fatigue than UHL. These findings underscore the need to increase auditory rehabilitation and educational resources for children with UHL and support the use of the PedsQL MFS questionnaire as a measure to follow disability experienced by children with HL as they undergo hearing rehabilitation.

Abstract
Difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep (symptoms of insomnia) are common following paediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). Yet, interventions to treat insomnia in this population have not yet been reported. This single-case series examined the feasibility and acceptability of cognitive behavioral treatment for insomnia (CBT-I) for adolescents (n = 5, aged 11-13 years) with TBI, and explored changes in sleep and fatigue post-treatment. Adolescents were randomly assigned to two conditions: a 7- or 14-days baseline, followed by 4 weeks of manualised CBT-I delivered individually. To assess feasibility and acceptability we compared recruitment and retention rates, and questionnaire scores to a-priori set criteria. We explored treatment efficacy and functional gains in sleep and fatigue from baseline to follow-up using structured visual analysis of time-series graphs, and reliable change indices or changes in clinical classification. Feasibility and acceptability indicators met a-priori criteria, but therapists noticed limited adolescent engagement in sessions. Clinically significant improvements were found in sleep, in 3 out of 4 cases, and fatigue, in all cases. Our study provides preliminary evidence that CBT-I is feasible for insomnia treatment in adolescents with TBI and provides directions for development of future treatment studies.

Life Satisfaction, Interpersonal Relationships, and Learning Influence Withdrawal from School: A Study among Junior High School Students in Japan. Abstract
School absenteeism, particularly among junior high school students, has increased annually in Japan. This study demonstrates the relationship between subjective adjustment to school life and students’ absenteeism. Data were collected from 17,378 junior high school students in Japan. A longitudinal design was used for the study. Teachers were asked to distribute the Adaptation Scale for School Environments on Six Spheres (ASSESS) questionnaire to junior high school students and ask the students to fill out the questionnaire at the beginning of the 2014 academic year in April 2014, and the relationship between their subjective adjustment and absenteeism as measured by the total number of absent days during the 2014 academic year was evaluated by logistic regression and a survival analysis model. Low life satisfaction was associated with absences. The corresponding odds ratio (OR) was higher for seventh graders (OR 3.29, confidence interval (CI): 2.41–4.48, hazard ratio (HR) 5.57, CI: 3.51–8.84) than for students in other grades. Interpersonal relationships were significantly related to absenteeism for seventh and eighth graders in the group with scores less than 39 points. Lower adjustment to learning seemed to be related to absenteeism for seventh and eighth graders. For effective interventions, a well-designed study that uses detailed information regarding life-related covariates is necessary.

Abstract
Background: It is well known that adolescents with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) experience greater school absenteeism compared to healthy adolescents. Less is known about other important aspects of school functioning including school participation, school connectedness, and academic performance in students with CFS. The aim of this study was to compare school functioning as a multifaceted construct in adolescents with CFS to healthy adolescent peers. We also explored whether illness factors were associated with school functioning in adolescents with CFS. Methods: Thirty-nine participants with CFS and 28 healthy controls (aged 13-17 years) completed a range of subjective and objective measures of school functioning, as well as measures of fatigue and emotional symptoms. Results: Adolescents with CFS demonstrated significantly higher rates of school absence, as well as poorer school-related quality of life, reduced school participation, poorer connectedness with school, and reduced academic performance. Fatigue severity and emotional symptoms were significantly associated with most aspects of school function. Conclusions: Adolescents with CFS are at increased risk for poor school functioning across a range of indicators which extend beyond school absenteeism.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This longitudinal study aimed to identify the relevant factors related to quality of life (QoL) changes in medical students. METHODS For this 6-month follow-up study, we enrolled 109 students from a Korean medical school. To assess students' QoL, we used the World Health Organization QoL scale. Possible determinants of student QoL included demographics, fatigue, and social support. A stepwise multivariate analysis identified factors associated with changes of student QoL. RESULTS Among sources of support, the "friends" category was the main position affecting their overall QoL, and "significant other" had the strongest influence on psychological and social domains. The impact of support from friends on QoL was confirmed in the longitudinal analysis. Final regression models revealed that providing students with more social support and promoting fatigue reduction best improved medical student sense of well-being. CONCLUSION Creating stronger student support programs to prevent social detachment and implementing strategies to reduce fatigue can improve QoL in medical students.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION University and college campuses may be the last setting where it is possible to comprehensively address the health of a large proportion of the young adult population. It is important that health promoters understand the collective challenges students are facing, and to better understand the broader lifestyle behavioural patterning evident during this life stage. The purpose of this study was to examine the clustering of modifiable health-risk behaviours and to explore the relationship between these identified clusters and mental health outcomes among a large Canadian university sample. METHODS Undergraduate students (n = 837; mean age = 21 years) from the University of Toronto completed the National College Health Assessment survey. The survey consists of approximately 300 items, including assessments of student health status, mental health and health-risk behaviours. Latent class analysis was used to identify patterning based on eight salient health-risk behaviours (marijuana use, other illicit drug use, risky sex, smoking, binge drinking, poor diet, physical inactivity, and insufficient sleep). RESULTS A three-class model based on student behavioural patterns emerged: "typical," "high-risk" and "moderately healthy." Results also found high-risk students reporting significantly higher levels of stress than typical students (χ2(1671) = 7.26, p < .01). CONCLUSION Students with the highest likelihood of engaging in multiple health-risk behaviours reported poorer mental health, particularly as it relates to stress. Although these findings should be interpreted with caution due to the 28% response rate, they do suggest that interventions targeting specific student groups with similar patterning of multiple health-risk behaviours may be needed.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this study, the authors examined the effect of hearing loss on subjective reports of fatigue in school-age children using a standardized measure. METHODS As part of a larger ongoing study, the authors obtained subjective ratings of fatigue using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) Multidimensional Fatigue Scale ( Varni, Burwinkle, Katz, Meeske, & Dickinson, 2002). This standardized scale provides a measure of general fatigue, sleep/rest fatigue, cognitive fatigue, and an overall composite measure of fatigue. To date, data from 10 children with hearing loss (CHL) and 10 age-matched children with normal hearing (CNH) have been analyzed. RESULTS These preliminary results show that subjective fatigue is increased in school-age children with hearing loss (Cohen's d = 0.78-1.90). In addition, the impact of hearing loss on fatigue in school-age children appears pervasive across multiple domains (general, sleep/rest, and cognitive fatigue). CONCLUSION School-age CHL reported significantly more fatigue than did CNH. These preliminary data are important given the negative academic and psychosocial consequences associated with fatigue. Further research is needed to determine the underlying mechanisms responsible for this increased fatigue in school-age children with hearing loss, and to identify factors that may modulate (e.g., degree of loss) and mediate (e.g., hearing aid or cochlear implant use) its impact.

Abstract
Among medical students, fatigue is a common complaint and is related to poor academic outcomes. Associations of scores on personality traits and fatigue in medical students were examined. A group of 125 healthy second-year medical students completed a questionnaire about fatigue, the Japanese version of the Chalder Fatigue Scale, and the Temperament and Character Inventory. On simple regression analyses, the Temperament and Character Inventory dimension of Harm Avoidance was positively associated with Fatigue scores and those on Self-directedness were negatively associated. Similarly, on multiple regression analyses adjusted for age and sex, scores on the Temperament and Character Inventory dimension of Harm Avoidance were positively associated with Fatigue scores, and those for Self-directedness were negatively associated. These correlations were evident even after adjustment for other Temperament and Character Inventory dimensions. The temperament dimension of Harm Avoidance and the character dimension of Self-directedness were both associated with Fatigue in medical students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although symptoms of sleepiness and fatigue are common in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD), little is known about the prevalence of these symptoms in children with CKD. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis within a cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS We describe the frequency and severity of sleep problems and fatigue and assess the extent of their association with measured glomerular filtration rate (mGFR) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in 301 participants of the Chronic Kidney Disease in Children cohort. OUTCOMES & MEASUREMENTS Sleep and fatigue-related items from the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 Generic Scales and the CKD-related Symptoms List were used. RESULTS Median mGFR was 42.0 mL/min/1.73 m(2) (25th-75th percentiles, 31.2-53.2), and median age was 13.9 years (25th-75th percentiles, 10.8-16.2). Children with mGFR of 40-<50, 30-<40, or <30 mL/min/1.73 m(2) had 2.07 (95% CI, 1.05-4.09), 2.35 (95% CI, 1.17-4.72), and 2.59 (95% CI, 1.15-5.85) higher odds of having more severe parent reports of low energy than children with mGFR > or = 50 mL/min/1.73 m(2). Compared with participants with mGFR > or = 50 mL/min/1.73 m(2), those with mGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m(2) had 3.92 (95% CI, 1.37-11.17) higher odds of reporting more severe weakness, and those with mGFR of 40-<50 mL/min/1.73 m(2) had 2.95 (95% CI, 1.26-6.88) higher odds of falling asleep during the day. Low energy, trouble sleeping, and weakness were associated with lower HRQOL scores. LIMITATIONS Symptoms of sleep and fatigue represent the child's or parent's perception of symptom severity, whereas individual items can lead to imprecise measurements of sleep and fatigue. CONCLUSIONS Lower mGFR was associated with increased weakness, low energy, and daytime sleepiness. Furthermore, a strong association between trouble sleeping, low energy, and weakness with decreases in overall HRQOL was observed. Detection and treatment of poor sleep and fatigue may improve the development and HRQOL of children and adolescents with CKD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fatigue, which is a common complaint among medical students, is related to poor academic outcomes. Because impaired dietary habits, such as skipping breakfast and taking meals irregularly, are correlated with poor school performances, whether those dietary habits were associated with the prevalence of fatigue was determined in medical students. METHODS The study group consisted of 127 healthy second-year medical students attending Osaka City University Graduate School of Medicine. They completed a questionnaire dealing with fatigue (Japanese version of the Chalder Fatigue Scale), lifestyle, and academic performance. RESULTS On multivariate logistic regression analyses adjusted for age, gender, body mass index, and nocturnal sleeping hours, skipping breakfast (completely skipping breakfast everyday versus having breakfast everyday; odds ratio 7.81, 95% confidence interval 2.00-30.52, P = 0.003) and taking meals irregularly (completely irregular versus always regular; odds ratio 6.89, 95% confidence interval 1.20-39.55, P = 0.030) were positively correlated with the prevalence of fatigue. CONCLUSION Skipping breakfast and taking meals irregularly are associated with the prevalence of fatigue in medical students.

Abstract
PURPOSE This systematic review synthesized the literature regarding fatigue in children with chronic health problems and examined the relationship to quality of life. CONCLUSIONS Most studies that have examined fatigue and its relationship to quality of life in children with chronic health problems have focused on children with cancer. Studies found that children often reported fatigue and that it decreased quality of life. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Quantifying fatigue in children with chronic illnesses and disabilities is critical for pediatric nursing assessment. Understanding the impact of fatigue on children with chronic health problems is a first step in improving their quality of life.
