Abstract
BACKGROUND Stress negatively affects well-being, relating to poor physical, emotional, and occupational outcomes for health care personnel. Health care professionals faced extreme stressors in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, making occupational stress relief a top priority for hospital administrators. Many health systems employ specially trained spiritual support staff as one strategy to alleviate work-related stressors. It is unclear whether health care personnels' perceptions of the availability of spiritual care staff influence self-reported stress. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to explore relationships between perceived stress and perceptions of availability of spiritual support among acute care health care personnel. METHODS This study analyzed cross-sectional, survey-based data collected between February and April 2022 from 1352 interdisciplinary health care staff working in a large, nonprofit Catholic health system in the Western United States. Bivariate tests and multivariate linear regression models were conducted to test for factors influencing perceived stress. RESULTS Results support that high stress was prevalent in the sample. Perceived availability of spiritual support staff in the hospital and seeking coworker and professional support for work-related stress all independently influence stress in this population when controlling for confounders. CONCLUSIONS Stress of health care personnel may be influenced by the perceived availability of specially trained spiritual support staff. Hospital administrators should advocate for spiritual support staff availability in all health care settings as one strategy to mitigate occupational stress that health care professionals may experience through providing high-stakes patient care. Further research is warranted to uncover targeted spirituality-related strategies to reduce stress and preserve well-being of health care personnel.

Abstract
Objectives. Improvement of the professionalization level for the new generation of construction workers (NGCWs) is critical to upgrade the construction industry. It also provides a new approach to reduce their unsafe behaviour. The purpose of this study is to analyse the correction mechanism of the professionalization level on NGCWs' unsafe behaviour. We examined the mediating role of work-family conflict and job burnout on impacting NGCWs' unsafe behaviour. The moderation effect of the NGCWs' perceived organizational support was also examined. Methods. The cross-sectional study was conducted based on structural equation modelling, confirmatory factor analysis and regression analysis with a sample of 496 NGCWs in China. Results. The professionalization level can effectively correct NGCWs' unsafe behaviour. Job burnout can independently mediate the relationship between professionalization level and unsafe behaviour and act as a serial mediator for work-family conflict. Moreover, the high level of perceived organizational support will effectively suppress the effect of work-family conflict on job burnout. Conclusions. Improving the professionalization level is an effective way to correct NGCWs' unsafe behaviour. Moreover, management should help the NGCWs balance work and family, to alleviate burnout. Additionally, it is suggested that management should ensure the NGCWs perceive the organizational support.

Abstract
Police officers often face emotionally challenging interpersonal situations and numerous studies have demonstrated that policing is a stressful occupation. A study revealed a significant positive correlation between emotional demands among police officers and emotional dissonance, as well as burnout. Health-promoting behaviors can contribute to better overall health outcomes and reduce the risk of developing health problems, but there is limited research evaluating the association of job strain and health behaviors with mental health outcomes in police officers. The objective of this study was to assess the job strain associated with mental health mediated by health behaviors in Taiwanese police officers. This was a cross-sectional quantitative study conducted in Oct 2016. A total of 41,871 police officers (response rate was 79.7%) participated questionnaire that consisted of demographic information, job characteristics, health behaviors, and mental component summary (MCS) scores of the Short-Form Health Survey. Independent t-tests and one-way analysis of variance (One-way ANOVA) were conducted to assess the differences in mean MCS scores across various demographics, health behavior, and job characteristics. Multivariate regression analyses were used to assess the relationship between job strain and health behaviors with mental health outcomes. MCS scores were associated with job characteristics and health behaviors among police officers except for gender. After adjusting for covariates, multivariate analysis indicated that police officers with high job demands and high job strain index exhibited poor MCS scores. Job strain was significantly associated with MCS mediated by health behaviors (consumption of fruits and vegetables, and physical activity) in Taiwanese police officers. Since regular physical activity and increased vegetable and fruit consumption might alleviate the effects of job strain on mental health status, it is recommended that institutional policies be established to promote health-enhancing behaviors among police officers.

Abstract
Background & Objectives Psychosocial stress has a detrimental effect on nurses' work performance. A safe working environment is significant in providing nurses with safe and satisfactory care. The objective of study was to assess the frequency of psychosocial stress of nurses and determine the relationship between psychosocial stress of nurses and safety attitude towards nurses' performances at Tertiary Care Hospital, Karachi. Methods Analytical cross-sectional study was conducted at Dr. Ruth KM Pfau Civil Hospital, Karachi, and Dow University Hospital Karachi for six months, from December 2020 to May 2021.A total 260 participants were approached by a non-probability purposive sampling. Pearson's correlation was used to establish the relationship between the psychosocial stress of nurses and different parameters of their safety attitude. The Chi-square test was applied for the association between demographic factors of nurses with their psychosocial stress levels. A p-value of ≤0.05 was considered as significant. Results The majority of nurses, 180 (69.2%), described poor health, while 54 (20.8%) had good health, and only 10% (26) of nurses reported their best health status. Three parameters were negatively correlated and statistically significant with psychosocial stress, namely: teamwork (r-0.13<0.002), job satisfaction (r-0.15<0.028), and perception of management (r-0.34<0.000). The result of the study indicated that gender (P-value<0.000), marital status (P-value<0.0037), and institution (P-value <0.005) were significantly associated with safety attitude score. Conclusion Most of the nurses had poor health, which was significantly related to teamwork, job satisfaction and perception of management, and stress recognition.

Abstract
In modern 24-hour society, various round-the-clock services have entailed shift work, resulting in non-24-hour schedules. However, the extent of behavioral and physiological alterations by non-24-hour schedules remains unclear, and particularly, effective interventions to restore the circadian functions of non-24-hour shift workers are rarely explored. In this study, we investigate the effects of a simulated non-24-hour military shift work schedule on daily rhythms and sleep, and establish an intervention measure to restore the circadian functions of non-24-hour shift workers. The three stages of experiments were conducted. The stage-one experiment was to establish a comprehensive evaluation index of the circadian rhythms and sleep for all 60 participants by analyzing wristwatch-recorded physiological parameters and sleep. The stage-two experiment evaluated the effects of an intervention strategy on physiological rhythms and sleep. The stage-three experiment was to examine the participants' physiological and behavioral disturbances under the simulated non-24-hour military shift work schedule and their improvements by the optimal lighting apparatus. We found that wristwatch-recorded physiological parameters display robust rhythmicity, and the phases of systolic blood pressures and heart rates can be used as reliable estimators for the human body time. The simulated non-24-hour military shift work schedule significantly disrupts the daily rhythms of oxygen saturation levels, blood pressures, heart rates, and reduces sleep quality. Administration of blue light in the morning and no blue-ray light in the evening improves the amplitude and synchronization of daily rhythms of the non-24-hour participants. These findings demonstrate the harmful consequences of the non-24-hour shift work schedule and provide a non-invasive strategy to improve the well-being and work efficiency of the non-24-hour shift population.

Abstract
Background Shift work has been reported to have several harmful effects on the human body. However, a small number of studies have evaluated the association between shift work and adverse effects on the thyroid. In our longitudinal study, we examined the causal association between shift work and the risk of hypothyroidism. Methods A Kangbuk Samsung Cohort Study was conducted on 112,648 men without thyroid disease at baseline who were followed up at least once between 2012 and 2019. Shift work status and shift schedule types were categorized using standardized questionnaires. Hypothyroidism was defined using the reference ranges of serum thyroid-stimulating hormones and free thyroxine levels. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident hypothyroidism were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression analyses with the daytime work group as the reference. Results During the 501,237 person-years of follow-up, there were 6,306 incident cases of hypothyroidism (incidence density, 1.26 per 100 person-years). The multivariable-adjusted HR of incident hypothyroidism for the shift work total group that included all shifts compared with the daytime work group was 1.27 (95% CI: 1.15-1.40). For the fixed evening, fixed night, rotating shift, and other shift workers, the multivariable-adjusted HRs (95% CI) were 1.11 (0.76-1.61), 2.18 (1.20-3.93), 1.39 (1.23-1.56), and 1.00 (0.82-1.22), respectively. In subgroup analyses by age, the association between shift work and hypothyroidism was more pronounced in younger participants (< 40 years; HR: 1.31; 95% CI: 1.16-1.47). Conclusions Our large-scale cohort study showed an association between shift work and the incidence of hypothyroidism, especially in younger workers with night shifts.

Abstract
ISSUE ADDRESSED Philippine contact centres are rife with factors that contribute to work-related stress; health promotion strategies are needed to mitigate the impacts. With a transactional framework with the environment, this study examined the relationship of stress with resilience and the presence of urban green spaces (UGS) in the environment, while accounting for individual characteristics (ie, age, household income, exercise frequency). METHODS Participants include employees (Stage 1 N = 186; Stage 2 N = 89) from six contact centres in the capital region of the Philippines. A two-stage online survey included standardised instruments to measure stress (10-item Perceived Stress Scale) and resilience (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale), customised questions to gather demographic information and probe on participants' insights. Google Earth Pro was used for satellite mapping of UGS, followed by on-site ocular inspection. RESULTS Participants' average stress level was categorised as high; primary stressors included client demands and workload. The objectively measured percentages of UGS in the study sites' vicinity were categorised as low. Participants found UGS visible after careful observation, and majority were aware of UGS in their workplace vicinity. Resilience, household income and awareness of UGS in the vicinity significantly predicted stress levels. CONCLUSION Contact centre workers experienced high stress levels and their workplaces had little accessible UGS. Resilience, household income and awareness of UGS are significant contributors to stress levels. SO WHAT?: Health promotion in Philippine contact centres could consider strategies that include building resilience, enhancing income security and promoting the awareness of UGS within the workplace vicinity.

Abstract
Insufficient sleep is a key factor in the occurrence of intestinal diseases. This study was performed to clarify how sleep deficiency mediates the intestinal microbiota, metabolite butyrate disturbance induces intestinal mucosal damage, and butyrate ameliorates it. A questionnaire was launched for sleep and intestinal health issues. Twenty-two healthy volunteers were interviewed, and the influence of insufficient sleep on the gut microbiota and metabolite composition was explored. Moreover, a 72-h sleep deprivation (SD) mouse model with or without butyrate supplementation was used to reveal the effect of butyrate on ameliorating small intestines damage caused by SD. The questionnaire survey of 534 college students showed that among 85.39% of the students who slept less than 7 h, 41.76% were suffering from various bowel disorders. High-throughput 16S rRNA pyrosequencing demonstrated that SD and sleep restriction (SR) resulted in downregulation of Faecalibacterium and butyrate abundance in the feces of college students. Furthermore, we observed that butyrate supplementation markedly reversed sleep-deprivation-induced small intestinal mucosal injury in mice. Meanwhile, butyrate supplementation inverted the SD-caused inflammation response and oxidative stress and the decline of phospho-glycogen synthase kinase 3β (p-GSK-3β), β-catenin, Nrf2, and cyclin D1 and the increase in histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) and phospho-P65 (p-P65) proteins in the small intestines. Furthermore, in vitro, the ameliorative effects of butyrate were blocked by treatment with the HDAC3 agonist ITSA-1 and the Nrf2 antagonist ML385 and mimicked by treatment with the HDAC3 antagonist RGFP966 and p-P65 antagonist PDTC. Our study revealed that SD and SR downregulated butyrate production, further causing intestinal homeostasis dysfunction via the HDAC3-p-GSK-3β-β-catenin-Nrf2-NF-κB pathway. IMPORTANCE Radical inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) induced by sleep deficiency is a serious global public health threat. Butyrate, a member of the short-chain fatty acids, exerts multiple effects on it. However, existing research focuses on injury to the colon caused by insufficient sleep, while the changes in the small intestines are often overlooked. This study focused on revealing the influence of insufficient sleep on the intestinal microbiota and its metabolites and further revealed the ameliorative effect of butyrate on sleep deprivation (SD)-induced small intestinal mucosal damage in human and mice. Our studies suggest that butyrate can be used as a probiotic to restore SD-induced IBD and contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms that govern the beneficial effects of butyrate.

Abstract
AIM To explore the experience of balancing a career with raising school-aged children and working three shifts and to suggest working environment changes to balance these roles BACKGROUND: Female nurses working three-day shift rotations experience irregular life patterns, parenting conflicts, and confusion over nursing roles. INTRODUCTION This qualitative study examined nurses with early school-aged children who work three-day shift rotations in South Korea. METHODS A descriptive phenomenological approach employed in-depth interviews to collect data from 12 married, female nurses with children aged 4-9 years. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method, and reporting rigor was demonstrated using the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist. FINDINGS Four themes emerged in our findings: (1) challenging phase: facing a great crisis that completely shatters the axis of life; (2) chaos phase: endless inner conflict between work and parenting; (3) solutions for coping phase: struggling to continue a nursing career; and (4) expanding phase: stepping into the expanded world of care. CONCLUSION Nurses working three-day shift rotations try to balance their lives through interactions between nursing and child-rearing. Further research is needed to create an environment that promotes this balance. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE AND POLICY To provide a better work-life balance, policymakers should foster a participatory and supportive management style, ensure adequate nurse staffing, implement a flexible work system, provide clinical career opportunities, encourage professional autonomy and responsibility, and promote in-service and shared social information or continuing education.

Abstract
Prediabetes (PreD), which is associated with impaired glucose tolerance and fasting blood glucose, is a potential risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). Growing evidence suggests the role of the gastrointestinal microbiota in both PreD and T2D, which opens the possibility for a novel nutritional approach, based on probiotics, for improving glucose regulation and delaying disease progression of PreD to T2D. In this light, the present study aimed to assess the antidiabetic properties of Pediococcus acidilactici (pA1c) in a murine model of high-fat diet (HFD)-induced T2D. For that purpose, C57BL/6 mice were given HFD enriched with either probiotic (1 × 1010 CFU/day) or placebo for 12 weeks. We determined body weight, fasting blood glucose, glucose tolerance, HOMA-IR and HOMA-β index, C-peptide, GLP-1, leptin, and lipid profile. We also measured hepatic gene expression (G6P, PEPCK, GCK, IL-1β, and IL-6) and examined pancreatic and intestinal histology (% of GLP-1+ cells, % of goblet cells and villus length). We found that pA1c supplementation significantly attenuated body weight gain, mitigated glucose dysregulation by reducing fasting blood glucose levels, glucose tolerance test, leptin levels, and insulin resistance, increased C-peptide and GLP-1 levels, enhanced pancreatic function, and improved intestinal histology. These findings indicate that pA1c improved HFD-induced T2D derived insulin resistance and intestinal histology, as well as protected from body weight increase. Together, our study proposes that pA1c may be a promising new dietary management strategy to improve metabolic disorders in PreD and T2D.

CITATION Risks associated with fatigue that accumulates during work shifts have historically been managed through working time arrangements that specify fixed maximum durations of work shifts and minimum durations of time off. By themselves, such arrangements are not sufficient to curb risks to performance, safety, and health caused by misalignment between work schedules and the biological regulation of waking alertness and sleep. Science-based approaches for determining shift duration and mitigating associated risks, while addressing operational needs, require: (1) a recognition of the factors contributing to fatigue and fatigue-related risks; (2) an understanding of evidence-based countermeasures that may reduce fatigue and/or fatigue-related risks; and (3) an informed approach to selecting workplace-specific strategies for managing work hours. We propose a series of guiding principles to assist stakeholders with designing a shift duration decision-making process that effectively balances the need to meet operational demands with the need to manage fatigue-related risks.

Abstract
A possible association between night shift work and musculoskeletal disorder has been suggested. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of decreased night work on musculoskeletal pain. Difference-in-difference estimation was used to compare changes in musculoskeletal pain between shift workers (N = 122) and non-shift workers (N = 170) in a manufacturing company before and after the introduction of a new shift system eliminating overnight work. Musculoskeletal pain was measured by a questionnaire asking if workers had symptoms in specific body parts, including the neck, shoulder, arm/elbow, wrist/hand, back, and leg/foot, over the past year. Generalized estimating equation models were used to estimate changes in pre- versus post-intervention musculoskeletal pain rates between the treated and control group. In the difference-in-difference (DID) models, prevalence of musculoskeletal pain for shoulder (−10.3%), arm (−12.9%), all sites combined (−9.2%), and upper extremity combined (−14.8%) showed significant decreases from pre- to post-intervention among the treated group (shift workers) compared to the control group (non-shift workers) after controlling for age and weekly working hours. Decreasing night work was related to improvement in musculoskeletal pain in shift workers.

Abstract
White light-emitting diodes (LEDs) will likely become the most used lighting devices worldwide in the future because of their very low prices over the course of their long lifespans which can be up to several tens of thousands of hours. The expansion of LED use in both urban and domestic lighting has prompted questions regarding their possible health effects, because the light that they provide is potentially high in the harmful blue band (400-500 nm) of the visible light spectrum. Research on the potential effects of LEDs and their blue band on human health has followed three main directions: 1) examining their retinal phototoxicity; 2) examining disruption of the internal clock, i.e., an out-of-sync clock, in shift workers and night workers, including the accompanying health issues, most concerningly an increased relative risk of cancer; and 3) examining risky, inappropriate late-night use of smartphones and consoles among children and adolescents. Here, we document the recognized or potential health issues associated with LED lighting together with their underlying mechanisms of action. There is so far no evidence that LED lighting is deleterious to human retina under normal use. However, exposure to artificial light at night is a new source of pollution because it affects the circadian clock. Blue-rich light, including cold white LEDs, should be considered a new endocrine disruptor, because it affects estrogen secretion and has unhealthful consequences in women, as demonstrated to occur via a complex mechanism.

Abstract
Thyroid hormones are regulated by the pituitary thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), whose secretion presents a circadian rhythmicity. Indeed, it is conceivable that shift- and night shift-work, affecting sleep-wake rhythms, may impact thyroid functionality. Therefore, the aim of the present review was to provide an overview on the association between shift- and night shift-work and thyroid hormonal changes and disease development. A systematic review of studies available in PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science databases was performed. A positive association between night shift-work and increased TSH concentrations was reported by most of the reviewed investigations. Inconclusive evidence was available on thyroid diseases. However, the limited number of studies, the noticeable heterogeneity in the shift-work scheduling, in terms of amount, duration, type of shift- or night shift-work, prevents easily integrating findings and extrapolating definite conclusions. Further investigation seems necessary to better define the relationship between shift schedules and different thyroid outcomes, and possible long-term implications of early functional changes. Overall, this may support the adoption of advanced risk assessment and management strategies aimed to achieve a safer workplace organization and a timely, responsible realization of all the benefits of a 24-h economy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous research demonstrated that sleep deprivation (SD) resulted in intestinal homeostasis disorder in colon. The present study was further performed to clarify the role of melatonin in SD-induced small intestinal (SI) mucosal injury. METHODS We successfully established a multiplatform 72 h SD mouse model with or without melatonin supplementation to explore the improvement of melatonin in the destruction of SI induced by SD. RESULTS Melatonin supplementation suppressed an increase of corticosterone level and a decrease of melatonin level caused by SD. Meanwhile, we observed that melatonin supplementation in sleep deprived mice markedly reversed a decrease of the villi length/crypt depth (V/C) ratio and the number of goblet cells, PCNA positive cells, the expressions of MUC2 and tight junction proteins, as well as an upregulation of the expressions of autophagic proteins in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Furthermore, melatonin supplementation inverted the SD-induced the decline of antioxidant enzyme activities (T-AOC and CAT etc) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10 and IFN-γ) and the increase of oxidative product MDA, pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and TNF-α), p-P65 and p-IκB proteins in the SI. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggested that melatonin may be used as a probiotic agent to reverse SD-induced SI mucosa injury by suppressing oxidative stress and NF-κB pathway activation.

Abstract
Background: This systematic review with meta-analysis was carried out to study the relationship between workplace violence and sleep problems. Methods: The PRISMA statement was used to conduct a systematic search of the literature on PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Sociological abstract, DOAJ, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. Of the original number of 749 studies, 34 were included in the systematic review, and 7 in the meta-analysis. Results: A total of 119,361 participants from 15 different countries took part in these studies which were published between 1999 and 2019. Significant heterogeneity was observed among the studies (I2 = 96%). In a random-effects meta-analysis model, pooled odds ratio (OR) analysis revealed that there was a direct relationship between occupational exposure to violence and sleep problems (OR = 2.55; 95% CI = 1.77–3.66). According to the GRADE guidelines, the quality of evidence of the association was low. Conclusions: The findings of this study demonstrate that occupational exposure to physical, verbal, or sexual violence is associated with sleep problems. Further research on the relationship between violence and sleep is needed so that appropriate measures can be taken to prevent violence and improve sleep hygiene in the workplace.
